In1674,Francoiswasappointedtotheboard ofdirectorsoftheHoornchamberofthe UnitedEastIndiaCompany(VOC).Hoorn wasahighlyimportantportfortheDutch EastIndiaCompany,theDutchWestIndia Company,andtheNoordscheCompagnie duringtheDutchGoldenAgetransoceanic trade.

In1675,Francoissucceededhisfatheras magistrateofHoorn,andin1682became LordofPijlsweert.By1686hepurchasedthe landedestateofOosthuizenandbecame Lord;by1715,FrancoiswasmayorofHoorn.

TheHoornharbortowerstillstandstowatch overthisoncemightybustlingportwith vesselsforallsevenseas,bearsthecity's arms,aunicornwithshieldandhorn,andis flankedbyFrancoisvanBredehoff'scoat-ofarms.

Amagnificentmausoleumwaserectedwhen FrancoisvanBredehoffdiedin1721;itisin theGroteKerkinOosthuizen,some30miles northofAmsterdam.TheAntwerpsculptor JanPetervanBaurscheittheElder(16991728)wascommissionedtocreatetheblack andwhitemarblesculpturalmonument, whichstillstandstoday,andisflankedby mourningboardsofhiswives,children,and family.

TheWestfriesMuseumcollectionincludes twopaintingsofFrancoisvanBredehoffby JandeBaen(1633-1702),thefirstathreequart-lengthportraitcirca1675,andthe othertitled"TheRegentsoftheHoorn ChamberoftheVOC"paintingin1682.
