A Silver Anniversary Season! This season marks a quarter century of presenting the best of the performing arts at the Center for the Arts. To celebrate our silver anniversary, we have assembled some of today’s most brilliant artists, from burgeoning luminaries to legendary masters, representing the worlds of music, dance, theater, and more. Orpheus in the Underworld Virginia Opera’s season begins with Offenbach’s rollicking and irreverent operetta, a romp through heaven and hell, which spins one of the most famous ancient Greek tragedies into a witty satire. Unhappy in their marriage, Orpheus and his wife pursue exciting relationships with new lovers, but as it turns out, Eurydice’s new beau is actually the God of Death in disguise. She is willingly whisked away to the Underworld, and Orpheus, while perfectly content with the arrangement, is cajoled into retrieving his wife. Meanwhile, when the bored and rebellious gods of Mount Olympus decide to pay a visit down below to sort things out, and to partake in some forbidden festivities, all hell breaks loose! Orpheus was considered quite scandalous by Parisian high society when it first premiered in 1858, but its magnificent melodies, risqué humor, and its lively “Infernal Galop” — the spirited tune that launched the French dance hall craze known as the CanCan — now make this farcical comic operetta one hell of a party! Sung in French with English supertitles. VO

For more than two decades, RIOULT (ree-you) has established a sterling reputation for blending breathtakingly beautiful movement with luminous symphonic works by Bach, Ravel, Stravinsky, and Mozart, creating contemporary dance that is truly sublime. Chopin and Grieg — A Musical Friendship In his second concert of the season, Jeffrey Siegel pays homage to two leading composers of the Romantic era with a performance of engaging melodies and nationalistic pride! The Munich Symphony Orchestra is one of Germany’s most venerated musical institutions, held in high esteem by audiences, critics, and experts alike. This important orchestra has enriched the cultural life of Bavaria with its unparalleled performances of symphonic concert pieces, opera and operettas, musicals, ballets, oratorios, and church music. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Hear iconic music in wonderful new ways as this inventive ensemble reimagines the landmark Beatles album with new arrangements by jazz, pop, and classical composers. Toronto-based Art of Time Ensemble is a collective of top classical, jazz, and pop musicians that was founded in 1998 and has redefined and reinvigorated the concert experience by fusing high art with popular culture. In this performance, the group pays homage to the record that Rolling Stone called “the most important rock album ever made,” and the preeminent band that conceived this counterculture work of genius. La Bohème This masterpiece of the standard Italian repertoire has touched the hearts and souls of opera lovers for generations with the combination of Puccini’s gorgeous score and the bittersweet tale of young love in bohemian Paris. Set in Paris’s Latin Quarter, La Bohème follows starving young artists struggling to survive and fulfill their dreams, getting by on passion, friendship, humor, and a lust for life. On a snowy Christmas Eve, Rodolfo, a romantic poet, and Mimi, an ailing seamstress, meet and fall deeply in love, but her languishing health and their abject poverty threaten their happiness. American Festival Pops Orchestra Holiday Pops: Songs of the Season Our favorite pops orchestra appears for its annual Christmas concert to deck the hall with the jubilant sounds of cherished Christmas carols, beloved holiday favorites, and popular songs of the season. This joyous concert is one of our most popular holiday traditions at the Center — a heartwarming evening of seasonal music performed by this extraordinary orchestra, accompanied by a fantastic collection of guest soloists, and featuring the ever-popular Christmas carol sing-along. Vienna Boys Choir Christmas in Vienna Experience all of the joy and excitement of the season in the celestial voices of these talented Austrian lads who belong to one of the best-known and most-acclaimed boys’ choirs in the world. They perform a broad range of music for the holidays, from sacred hymns and traditional Christmas carols to holiday pop favorites and folk songs from across the globe. The Band of the Royal Marines Featuring the Pipes, Drums, and Highland Dancers of the Scots Guards Two of Great Britain’s most respected military musical institutions take the stage in full regalia, bringing to life the magnificent pageantry of British tradition and history. Thrill to the distinctive sounds of their bagpipes, brass, and stirring anthems combined with the spectacle of regimental marches and spirited Scottish Highland dancing. Featuring some of the most superb musicians in the military world, The Band of the Royal Marines has supported the British naval service for nearly 250 years, originally to provide the beat for columns of marching soldiers. Also appearing, The Band of the Scots Guards was founded three centuries ago to boost morale for these elite British troops while engaged in conflicts. Today, this illustrious ensemble performs daily at Buckingham Palace for the Guard Mounting. People of all ages will be awed by the pomp and grandeur on display in these performances. GV

Polish Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra Boguslaw Dawidow, conductor Marcin Koziak, piano Wagner: Overture, The Flying Dutchman Rimsky-Korsakov: Symphonic Suite from Scheherazade Chopin: Piano Concerto, No. 2 in F minor This distinguished ensemble from the historic port city of Gda´ nsk on the coast of the Baltic Sea brings a splendid evening of classical music favorites. Founded in 1945, the Polish Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra has flourished over the decades, despite this tumultuous period in Poland’s history. The orchestra thrives today, representing the lofty passions that witnessed tragedy and drove revolutions, while still capturing the proud stoicism of contemporary Poland and the Baltic Sea coast. Under the baton of celebrated Polish conductor Boguslaw Dawidow, this exceptional ensemble performs three masterful nineteenth century works full of Romantic passion and drama. MM
