Virginia Opera

RIOULT

Orpheus in the Underworld Virginia Opera’s season begins with Offenbach’s rollicking and irreverent operetta, a romp through heaven and hell, which spins one of the most famous ancient Greek tragedies into a witty satire. Unhappy in their marriage, Orpheus and his wife pursue exciting relationships with new lovers, but as it turns out, Eurydice’s new beau is actually the God of Death in disguise. She is willingly whisked away to the Underworld, and Orpheus, while perfectly content with the arrangement, is cajoled into retrieving his wife. Meanwhile, when the bored and rebellious gods of Mount Olympus decide to pay a visit down below to sort things out, and to partake in some forbidden festivities, all hell breaks loose! Orpheus was considered quite scandalous by Parisian high society when it first premiered in 1858, but its magnificent melodies, risqué humor, and its lively “Infernal Galop” — the spirited tune that launched the French dance hall craze known as the CanCan — now make this farcical comic operetta one hell of a party! Sung in French with English supertitles. VO

This exquisite ensemble enchanted our audience when they first appeared at the Center and now they return for a spellbinding evening of contemporary dance. For more than two decades, RIOULT (ree-you) has established a sterling reputation for blending breathtakingly beautiful movement with luminous symphonic works by Bach, Ravel, Stravinsky, and Mozart, creating contemporary dance that is truly sublime. The brainchild of former Martha Graham principal dancer Pascal Rioult, this outstanding company has received accolades from around the world and returns to the D.C. area with awe-inspiring interpretations of well-known classical compositions. “[Pascal Rioult] has an ability to balance the innate orchestral power of such music with an equally powerful sense of precision and innovation.” (Huffington Post) DD AD FRIDAY n OCTOBER 9 $48, $41, $29

Giselle

Swan Lake

This acclaimed Russian ballet company brings one of the most heartrending tragedies in classical ballet to our stage. With stunning choreography by the legendary Marius Petipa and hauntingly beautiful music, this romantic ballet portrays the poignant tale of Giselle, a young peasant girl who has fallen madly in love with a villager, unaware that he is, in fact, a count in disguise. When she learns that he is betrothed to another, she takes her own life, and joins the ghosts of girls who seek to avenge the men who have jilted them. This gorgeous ballet of love and hate, vengeance and forgiveness is performed by some of Russia’s finest dancers in the grand tradition of Russian ballet with gorgeous costumes and colorful sets. “The dancers of the Moscow Festival Ballet spoke to the soul through the body, performing a magnificent Giselle.” (Post and Courier) DD AD

This esteemed Russian dance company performs this exquisite fantasy ballet that has captivated ballet lovers and newcomers alike for generations. Swan Lake was inspired by the German legend of Odette, a beautiful princess who is the victim of a spell cast by an evil sorcerer. With Petipa’s glorious choreography and Tchaikovsky’s celebrated expressive score, this jewel of classical ballet continues to earn the adoration of audiences worldwide. Legendary Bolshoi Ballet principal dancer Sergei Radchenko has handpicked leading dancers from across Russia for this acclaimed troupe that is dedicated to preserving the timeless traditions of classical Russian ballet. “Dramatic expression and sensational steps.” (The Chronicle, Duke University)

Virginia Opera

The Flying Dutchman Wagner’s immortal tale of a cursed sea captain, who is condemned to sail the stormy seas on a ghostly ship for eternity, is as mythic, mighty, and mysterious as the ocean itself. The Flying Dutchman has fascinated opera lovers since its premiere in 1843. With hauntingly beautiful music, it tells the story of a phantom seafarer on an endless quest for redemption through true love, and the adoring young woman who has vowed to save him. This opera was one of Wagner’s earliest works, inspired by his own dangerous sea voyage, and contains evidence of the styles that would come to characterize his later works. Set against the backdrop of a violent and turbulent sea, this gripping saga features themes of deliverance, loyalty, sacrifice, and the supernatural; powerful ideas that Wagner would continue to explore in his operas throughout his illustrious career. Sung in German with English supertitles. VO

The College of Visual and Performing Arts

OUR COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE OF THE ARTS The Center for the Arts is proud to be part of George Mason University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA), supporting and enriching the student experience with world-class performances throughout the academic year and a state-of-the art venue for student performances. CVPA students enjoy the intense professional training of an arts conservatory along with the vast resources of a major research university. They are guided by a faculty of dedicated artistteachers who themselves practice what they teach performing and exhibiting at renowned venues across the country and around the world. Student organizations within the Schools of Music, Dance, Theater, and Art make it possible for students to advance their craft formally and informally throughout the year. They perform, create and exhibit work in a wide variety of public venues on campus ranging from the Center for the Arts Concert Hall to the intimate TheaterSpace and the Fine Art Gallery. In addition, students are able to refine their art in several major new facilities including the Art and Design Building, the de Laski Performing Arts Building, and the Music and Theater Building on the Fairfax campus as well as the magnificent Hylton Performing Arts Center on the Prince William campus. This extraordinary fusion of the academic and the professional, the campus and the community, the past and the present, is an essential part of the identity of the Center for the Arts and defines the college.
