VIRGINIA OPERA

THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS AND PAGLIACCI A double bill of two short opera masterpieces Virginia Opera opens its 25th season at the Center for the Arts with a fantastic double bill — the satirical ballet chanté The Seven Deadly Sins and Ruggero Leoncavallo’s masterpiece Pagliacci. The final collaboration between Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, The Seven Deadly Sins is a sharp critique of capitalism, exploring greed, desire, and sacrifice in the pursuit of success. Anna, performed by renowned Weill specialist Ute Gferer, embarks on a crosscountry journey in search of the American Dream, encountering one of the infamous sins in each of the cities she visits. In Pagliacci, a traveling troupe of actors blurs the lines of art and life as their play mirrors their own reality with tragic consequences. It features one of the most familiar of all tenor arias sung by the crying clown, “Vesti la giubba.” The renowned baritone Michael Chioldi and the acclaimed soprano Kelly Kaduce appear in these two tales of temptation and vengeance. The Seven Deadly Sins will be sung in English with English supertitles. Pagliacci will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. OF SERENDIP A FRENCH MUSICAL FEAST SONS CHRISTMAS: BEYOND THE LIGHTS BIRDMAN

Featuring Antonio Sanchez, percussion

Watch this award-winning film with a live performance of the musical score Feel the full intensity of this dark comedy as percussionist Antonio Sanchez performs his critically acclaimed score onstage while the Oscar-winning film Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) is projected behind him. The movie pulses with a restless urgency because of the skilled direction and commanding performances of a star-studded cast. But it is the innovative drumming score that is at the very core of the film, underpinning each scene, generating the uneasy feeling of impending doom. Written and performed by the acclaimed jazz percussionist Antonio Sanchez, the drummer in Pat Metheny’s band, the score has received accolades for its wildly spontaneous and organic sound. Winning Oscars for best picture, director, original screenplay, and cinematography, the movie stars Michael Keaton with Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis and Emma Stone. It follows a faded Hollywood star, famous for playing a movie superhero, in his attempt to mount a Broadway play hoping to reinvigorate his failing career. Antonio Sanchez’s drum performance propels the emotional core of the story as this increasingly desperate actor struggles with fame, family, and legacy. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind experience.

THE BARBER OF SEVILLE Featuring the famous “Figaro’s Aria” Virginia Opera presents the world’s most popular comic opera in this delightful production of Rossini’s perfect opera buffa. Full of comical high jinks, mistaken identities, and longing lovers, The Barber of Seville recounts the tale of Count Almavira, a lovesick noble man who is prohibited from seeing his beloved Rosina by the curmudgeon who is her guardian. So Almavira enlists the help of Figaro, the town’s barber and all-around problem solver.

CHOPINIANA AND CARMEN

THE SLEEPING BEAUTY

Double bill of classical ballet This ballet double bill represents some of the very best of classical ballet with all of the beauty, grace, and passion that typifies the grand Russian ballet tradition. Growing out of Chopin’s Seventh Waltz, Chopiniana does not follow a traditional plot. Instead, it is a poetic portrayal of romance and grace as represented by ballerinas and a young man or poet. Carmen is based on the iconic opera and includes Georges Bizet’s acclaimed score, which was adapted by Rodion Shchedrin in what he called “a creative meeting of the minds.” The ballet tells of Carmen, the fiery, free-spirited gypsy, and the love triangle between her, the soldier and the toreador. Upholding the national tradition of classical ballet, Russian National Ballet Theatre brings these ballets to life with impressive technique and artful poise, extravagant sets and gorgeous, colorful costumes. The whole family will enjoy the pageantry and elegance of this magnificent performance. Saturday, March 18 at 8 p.m. $56, $48, $34 ff DD

GREAT PERFORMANCES AT MASON 2016/2017 SEASON

A lavish ballet depiction of this well-known fairy tale Considered by many to be the finest achievement in classical ballet and the crowning jewel of Petipa’s career, The Sleeping Beauty is a lavish theatrical depiction of this well-known fairly tale. With music composed by the king, of classical ballet music, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, this grand ballet has it all — a beautiful princess and a charming prince, a king and queen, fairies — both good and evil — and courtly splendor. After a wicked fairy curses the baby princess to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday, a benevolent fairy bestows her gift, so the princess will instead fall into a deep sleep until awakened by the kiss of a prince. The unmatched grace of the dancers of the Russian National Ballet Theatre along with the elaborate sets and beautiful costumes make this a perfect family event! Sunday, March 19 at 4 p.m. $56, $48, $34 ff

Puccini’s last opera, featuring the famous aria “Nessun dorma” Puccini’s grandiose opera brings the splendor of imperial China to life with this epic tale of revenge, power, and love. The vengeful princess Turandot will marry, only if a suitor can meet her challenge. Answer three riddles correctly or face doom. When a young handsome prince succeeds, she still resists and so he offers a challenge of his own: learn his name by dawn and he will forfeit his life. One of opera’s most lavish works, the score includes the well-known tenor aria, “Nessun dorma.” This is Puccini’s last opera; in fact, the final scene was completed by Franco Alfano after the maestro’s death. Laced with exoticism and an innovative use of chorus, it is a powerful work and considered one of his finest. Virginia Opera’s lavish production with extravagant sets and resplendent costumes recreates the opulent royal courts of ancient China. Sung in Italian with English supertitles. Saturday, March 25 at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 26 at 2 p.m. $110, $90, $54 VO

THE IMMORTAL MELODIES OF SCHUBERT

Virtuoso pianist and entertaining storyteller Jeffrey Siegel returns to the keyboard in a program that showcases the ardent melodies and incisive rhythms of Spanish and Argentine composers. Popular with piano music lovers and newcomers alike, his unique “concerts with commentary” approach gives the story behind piano works by Albeniz, Granados, deFalla, and Piazolla. Delivered with wit and humor and a deep admiration for the music, Mr. Siegel’s performance will make you fall in love with this intoxicatingly exotic music. An interactive Q and A will conclude this program. See page 5 for more information.

This program of music by Franz Schubert is the third in the series of unique “concerts with commentary.” No composer wrote more beautiful, melodic, and accessible music than Franz Schubert. He is the composer of such famous works as Ave Maria, Serenade, and The Trout Quintet. With this unparalleled gift for writing earcatching melodies, his compositions have an exciting rhythmic verve. The program will include some of his charming waltzes, dramatic Impromptus, lyrical Musical Moments, and the vivacious Sonata in A major, D. 664. Join Jeffery Siegel as he offers the opportunity to begin your journey into the world of classical music or to enhance your existing passion for the piano literature. An interactive Q and A will conclude this program. See page 13 for more information.

Sunday, September 18 at 7 p.m.

A FRENCH MUSICAL FEAST Become a classical music insider with Jeffrey Siegel as he provides a delicious musical feast for the ears — gorgeous music of Debussy including the beloved Clair de lune, Ravel’s impressionistic The Fountain, the charming Impromptus of Fauré, and the humorous Parade of Eric Satie. Virtuoso pianist and entertaining storyteller Jeffrey Siegel returns to our stage with a program of distinctively French musical delights. Popular with classical music lovers and newcomers alike, his unique “concerts with commentary” format gives the story behind the score. An interactive Q and A will conclude this program. See page 8 for more information. Sunday, November 20 at 7 p.m.

Sunday, March 5 at 7 p.m.

The scintillating and well-loved piano music of Chopin is this season’s finale Keyboard Conversation program. Marvel not only how beautiful this music is to listen to but how masterfully each work has been composed and with what extraordinary musical ingredients the composer cooks up each work. Many of the works on this program are not only great concert favorites but have been used in film and TV scores. Enrich your life with some of the most compelling, fascinating music ever written — Waltzes, Nocturnes, Ballades, Impromptus, and the famous Heroic Polonaise! An interactive Q and A will conclude this program. See page 16 for more information.
