Canadian Brass A Canadian Brass Christmas

Saturday, December 8 at 8 pm “Some say the best musical instrument of all is the human voice – if you’ve seen Rockapella you know that’s the truth,” says USA Today. Come celebrate the season with this five-man a cappella powerhouse as they perform such holiday classics as Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree, I’ll Be Home For Christmas, and Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, as well as popular new pieces like Little Mary Snowflake, and their signature Snowstar. Young and old alike are drawn to their humor, style and artistry, their amazing and innovative “vocal percussion”, and their winning combination of soul, rock, R&B, and jazz. Often remembered for their Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? theme, Rockapella tours widely each year, and performs regularly on television and radio.

Friday, December 14 at 8 pm The holidays are “our busiest time of the year,” according to Canadian Brass trumpeter Joe Burgstaller. With almost 100 concerts per year, the busy brass quintet, now heading into its 36th performance season, is always on the go, but never more so than during the winter holidays. The group demonstrates tremendous versatility with a program ranging from Bach to Glenn Miller, and, of course crowd-pleasing and festive Hanukkah and Christmas music! A Canadian Brass Christmas is truly one of the performances that Center patrons anticipate all year!

Saturday, November 17 at 8 pm Sunday, November 18 at 4 pm The Georgian State Dance Company storms the stage with equal parts enthusiasm and virtuosity in a non-stop kaleidoscope of whirling, leaping, spinning, and gliding bodies, leaving audiences and critics awestruck. “Quite astonishing,” reported The Dallas Morning News. “Remarkable,” declared The New York Times. This renowned company performs regional, court, and social dances reflecting various aspects of Georgian life. Fierce gymnastic male warriors demonstrate their impressive acrobatic skills in dramatic war dances while exquisitely costumed women glide on imperceptible footsteps across the stage. And then, performing at break-neck speeds, the men spin high in mid-air, compete in elaborate swordplay, dance completely unsupported on toes alone, and defy gravity by balancing on one another’s shoulders. s

And then, performing at break-neck speeds, the men spin high in mid-air, compete in elaborate swordplay, dance completely unsupported on toes alone, and defy gravity by balancing on one another’s shoulders. s

This dynamic storyteller seamlessly weaves a new picture of patriotism, and challenges each of us to answer the question, “What does it mean to be an American?” In what the Chicago Tribune calls “fascinating snapshots of the American psyche,” Staggering Toward America is a hymn to the indomitable spirit of America, and one man’s search to find out what it means to be an American post-9/11. In their high-energy shows, festive and celebratory dances are interwoven with vibrant live music to recreate the folkloric history of their ancestors. “A nonstop carnival of rhythm,” writes The Los Angeles Times. Their distinctive sound is in part the result of their unusual percussion instruments – a wooden crate, a tithing box and a donkey jaw. Historically, these were substitutes for the drums that had been banned by Spanish colonizers. The music is rounded out by melodic guitar and passionate voices, providing the perfect accompaniment for the rhythmic and passionate dancing. “So much unadulterated fun,” declared the Boston Globe.

First performed in 1955, Moby Dick Rehearsed is a play within a play: a fascinating hybrid that draws parallels between King Lear and Captain Ahab. Relying on the magic of the theater without the assistance of sets or costumes, the talented cast and crew transport the audience to the nautical world of the Pequod, as the tale of Captain Ahab and his obsessive pursuit of the great white whale unfolds. Friday, April 18 at 8 pm Sunday, April 20 at 2 pm Donizetti fashioned one of his most passionate operas and mesmerizing heroines after Sir Walter Scott’s classic novel The Bride of Lammermoor. The noble Scots families of Lammermoor and Ravenswood have been feuding for many years, and have sworn to exterminate each other. Lucia’s love for Edgardo, a member of her family’s sworn enemy, ultimately drives her to madness. To Italian audiences of the 1800s, the lonely cliffs of the Scottish highlands seemed a remote and exotic setting – the perfect backdrop for an opera of tempestuous love and family honor. Long a favorite role of some of the world’s most famous sopranos, this bel canto masterpiece is a star vehicle for a singer of vocal suppleness and dramatic intensity.

Swan Lake Saturday, April 12 at 8 pm Founded in 1966 as the first Theatre of Ballet in Russia, St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre is led by international ballet laureate Yuri Petukhov, who continues to build its extensive repertoire of classical and modern ballet. The company presents two different ballets on consecutive evenings: Carmen and Swan Lake. Created by Petukhov and set to the unforgettable Georges Bizet score, Carmen is the passionate, sensual story of the seductive gypsy who tempts the handsome soldier Don José, much to the dismay of his betrothed. With choreography, costumes and scenery evoking the romance of Old Seville, this is sure to please ballet lovers of all ages. Swan Lake is one of the great fantasies, and was inspired by the ancient German legend of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. Utilizing oversized structures or surrealistic sets of commonplace items, performers leap, fly, and twirl to convey powerful narratives that are clever metaphors for the absurdities of life. In Trajectoire, the ensemble takes a visceral and emotional journey on a great abstract galleon; and in Tete au Carre, a huge cube structure is used to explore the concept of teamwork. “Playfulness with props and physicality that elicits cheers from the audience,” writes The New York Times. $44, $36, $22

Sunday, April 6 at 7 pm The Tempest is a play of enduring enchantment, and one of the richest treasures to be found in anywhere in the dramatic literature. Inhabited by a host of interesting characters, The Tempest tells of a great, yet embittered magician who has been marooned on an isle in the New World. He plans vengeance on his enemies, but instead learns the glory of reconciliation and forgiveness. Written near the end of Shakespeare’s career, The Tempest is seen by some as a poignant farewell to the theater, and when Prospero declares that “our revels now are ended,” it may be as much the playwrights voice as the magician’s. This stunning work is performed with extraordinary aplomb by the award-winning ensemble, The Acting Company.

St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre Carmen Friday, April 11 at 8 pm

With its melodramatic plot twists, Petipa’s classic choreography and, of course, the unforgettable Tchaikovsky score, Swan Lake continues to earn the adoration of those who love great ballet in the grand Russian tradition. $54, $46, $27

Diavolo Diavolo

Friday, May 2 at 8 pm Saturday, May 3 at 8 pm This innovative dance company was acclaimed by the Los Angeles Times for its “unstinting energy and the ability to dance on any surface, whether horizontal, vertical, tilted or tubular.” Diavolo is composed of dancers, gymnasts and actors who collaborate with artistic director and founder Jacques Helm to create pieces that offer an almost cinematic experience.

Saturday, March 22 at 8 pm This award-winning, Harlem-based company is recognized as one of the most innovative and powerful forces in the modern dance world. Choreographer and dancer Bill T. Jones has an unmistakable style, often combining video, text, and autobiographical material with dance. Forming the company in 1982 Jones, with his late partner Arnie Zane, gained recognition as “new wave” choreographers whose large-scale, abstract collaborations were visually and spatially energized by contemporary sets, costumes, and body paintings. In a recent review of this multicultural company, The Washington Post raved: “They all share a velvety propulsion, razor-sharp technique and a stage presence that’s close to majesty.”

$50, $42, $25

Friday, April 4 at 8 pm “America’s favorite choral ensemble” (The New Yorker) is always a favorite of our audiences. Chanticleer returns in a special program to commemorate 30 years of vocal brilliance. Filled with the hallmarks of their repertoire, the harmonious evening includes works by Palestrina, Byrd, Mahler, traditional folk songs, spirituals, plainsong, and chant, performed with “luxurious perfection.” (The Los Angeles Times) Audiences the world over are transfixed by this GRAMMY award-winning ensemble, unsurpassed for their seamless blend of twelve male voices, ranging from countertenor to bass. Their reverence for the music, commitment to virtuosic performance, and passion for the development and preservation of the choral repertoire has earned them international acclaim.

Sunday, April 13 at 7 pm “The Leonard Bernstein of the piano – Siegel’s programs strengthen the bonds between the music and the listener and are as welcome as they are rare,” wrote the Chicago Tribune about this wonderful pianist, and his popular, long-running series, Keyboard Conversations®. In this final concert in his series of musical journeys, Siegel explores the works of three great composers, Liszt, Johann Strauss Jr., and Schubert.
