Striving For Better Opportunities In Herts The STRIVE Project is launched at Celtic Harmony Camp

In March we welcomed our first Strive participents Billy and James (pictured below working with Heritage Director Luca Parrella) who took part in a conservation activity. Participants learnt hands on woodland management tasks such as clearing the den building area, sowing grass seed on the meadow and maintaining the woodland sculptures. In partnersip with Hertfordshire County Council and 27 third sector organisations across the county, Celtic Harmony is taking part in the STRIVE Project, which provides one-to-one mentor support for participants, as well as a range of activities from Conservation to Archery, to develop workplace and social skills.

Summer 2017

Welcome to Summer This year we are welcoming even more school children and work experience participants to experience life in Ancient Britain, and improve self-esteem through hands-on heritage trips and courses. Our volunteer team is busy completing the new roundhouses, access pathway and the build on the new Prehistory Centre structure, to enable Celtic Harmony to provide a richer

learning experience of life in Ancient Britain and benefit an additional four thousand people per annum.

In order to make this happen, this year we will not be holding our usual events and festivals, however you can still visit the camp and help out on one of our Family Volunteer Days.

Clare and Luca

Raising the Aspirations of Young People Heritage Director Luca Parrella has taken on two advisory roles, with Youth Connexions and Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), helping young people in Hertfordshire reach their full potential . He explains; “The Enterprise Advisor programme is to inspire and prepare young people for the fast changing world of work. This exciting pilot project is bringing together employers, government and educational institutions for the benefit of young residents living in Hertfordshire. My role as Employer Mentor with

Youth Connexions in partnership with the Careers and Enterprise Company is to mentor students in school years 8-10 (aged 12-15) who are at risk of disengaging from education. The programme aims to raise aspirations, improve educational attainment and a greater awareness of and motivation towards a career pathway.” The Enterprise Adviser programme in Hertfordshire is match funded by the Careers Enterprise Company and Hertfordshire LEP to improve the prospects of or workforce and residents of Hertfordshire.

North Herts College Work Experience Nine students participated in a four day plastering work experience course throughout March. The students completed daubing (celtic plaster) of the outside of four roundhouses, meaning all of our new roundhouses are now daubed! Art students from the college will be joining us in May to decorate the new roundhouses with Celtic Art.

Thanks to everyone who gave us their vote for the Tesco Bags of Help scheme. We have received £1000 which will go towards the finishing of the roundhouses as part of our education programme.

Prehistory Activity Centre - Help create a legacy

Celtic Harmony is planning an amazing transformation to become an all year round facility and a beacon of learning in the field of prehistory, and we want you to be a part of it! Popularity and demand for Celtic Harmony’s award winning educational experiences is ever increasing. Last year 15,000 people

visited and the growing numbers of schools and community groups requested an all year round facility. The development of a Prehistory Activity Centre will enable us to extend the experiential learning indoors and work over the winter months. Heritage activites, prehistory exhibitions, indoor shows including; falconry, warrrior

displays and archery will be provided in this exciting new build. The Prehistory Centre Structure build will start this Summer to erect the structure, roof and pad foundations with the kind support of Rural Development Programme for England under Eastern Plateau and with a Barclays bank loan.
