Phase 2

The Prehistory Centre will provide a warm indoor space for visitors to enable the Celtic Harmony education programme to continue through the year, enabling the charity to provide quality hands-on heritage education even in inclement weather and develop the visitor experience with improved facilities and the opportunity to handle real artefacts in the future. The Centre will enable us to significantly increase capacity, enabling more than 4,500 more children and community groups to visit, develop the education programme to offer residential experiences fo the disadvantaged and expand the education and volunteer team. The Eastern Plateau and European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development have continued to support the second phase of the Prehistory Centre. An insulated building of 25m x 20m, The Prehistory Centre will provide an indoor space to cater for larger groups with workshop areas and heritage interpretation throughout the year.

Introduction 2019 has got off to a busy start, welcoming 8,635 children and their adult helpers this spring and summer term. Children have taken part in a new day trip ‘the Prehistory Experience’ and residential experiences, a full immersion into Prehistory and an opportunity to develop primitive skills, confidence and a better appreciation for the natural world. ‘Everything very interesting, informative and fun!’ Prehistory Experience, Mrs Marks, Goodwyn School, March 2019 Over 900 children have spent the night in the roundhouses including those from disadvantaged areas funded by local and national trusts. Two more members of staff, Charley and Richard, joined the team this year to enable us to deliver a high quality experiential learning to even more children. The conservation volunteer team has expanded too and they have been working in the woodland and the settlement looking after the site and preparing resources for all the visiting children! We are looking forward to completing the Prehistory Centre building by this summer and raising funds for the interpretation and internal fittings by the end of the year. Thank you to everyone for their support, we are looking forward to an active summer!

Resilience Building Trips We have launched a Resilience Building Residential Trips project for disadvantaged children to benefit from increased confidence and wellbeing through the residential experiences. Garfield Weston, Hertfordshire Community Foundation and Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation kindly supported the project granting £17,825. Over 180 children are benefitting from Bedwell Primary, Woodlands Academy, Larkspur Primary Academy, Thomas Fairchild Community, Farley Junior, and William Davis school. ‘I think the team building activities were excellent as they supported the children developing team work and leadership skills. Also the many hands on experiences that they were exposed to, taught them lots of independence. The experience of sleeping in a roundhouse was the most beneficial aspect for the children.’ Errol Gayle, Farley Junior , May 2019.

Measuring Impact We are working in partnership with Centre for Social Enterprise at the University of Hertfordshire to measure the impact of school day trips and residential visits. “Celtic Harmony Education Programme” Evaluation Report, presented by the University of Hertfordshire early this year was a report with data provided by 417 teachers from 233 schools who participated with their pupils in a range of Prehistory Day trips. Following their Residential Trips 86% ‘enjoyed staying overnight with classmates’ and 90% ‘enjoyed learning about the past through outdoor activities’. 80% agreed with the statement ‘I am confident in my ability to do most things’ following the trip, compared to 67% before, reflecting increased confidence.

Teachers said: “So many life skills and values were developed today,” “Each child was very eager and enthusiastic to give everything a go.” The Educational team leaders were described as “knowledgeable,” “engaging,” and “patient and helpful.” ‘Everyone at Bedwell Primary had a fantastic time. Celtic Harmony team were extremely accommodating to us all. The children had a brilliant time and have learned so much. It was a truly priceless experience.’ Warren Hollingsworth, Bedwell, May 2019

The feedback points out the overwhelmingly positive learning experience by both pupils and teachers. The main points identified as beneficial for pupils, their learning, and the teachers’ pedagogical practice were: • creative practical activities that allow children to experience life as it was in different times • hands-on experience that complements their classroom learning and brings it to life

“I started working at the start of March and it has been the fastest two months of my life! I have learnt so much already and really enjoying learning more about prehistory but also I’ve found working with children rewarding.

• development of confidence and communication skills.

Teachers Iron Age Inset Course Monday 17th June, 3pm to 6pm

Celtic Harmony experts in primitive skills and archaeology have come together to design an event to bring the Iron Age to life first-hand through an interactive talk and practical primitive skills workshops, with guest speaker Archaeologist Keith Fitzpatrick Matthews and Heritage Director Luca Parrella supported by the expert education team. Designed for teachers, as well as anyone with a keen interest in Prehistory, the event will help inspire your Prehistory topic! Limited spaces, secure your place online today!

Both my parents were teachers and I had always said I would never go into teaching, but things changed! I wanted to work at Celtic Harmony because I love being in the outdoors and being able to teach children in a unique and fun environment is something I want to do. I’m excited to keep learning and being part of the Celtic Harmony team.”

The first week of June is Volunteer Week, celebrating the hard work of all of our volunteers so a massive thank you is in order! Our volunteers, Joyce, Michaela, Lawrence, John, Stephen, Connor, Scott and the team at We Do Care have been working hard on a number of projects, and these are ongoing – repairs to the willow tunnel, creating new platforms for the bell tents, refurbishment of the herb spiral, and working on the new roundhouses. These have now been decorated with authentic Celtic designs, and we shall be looking at fitting wooden floors for some more of them this summer, to improve our visitor experience. Come and help our skilled conservation volunteers who play a fundamental role in maintaining the upkeep of our woodland and other facilities.

We meet every Monday and Thursday, complete the application online and take the first step to joining our friendly team.
