Eid Special:

The hanging sword on ‘Lollywood’ Eid releases this year Posted by Aayan Mirza on August 1, 2012 in Article News Religious festivals or national holidays all releases with respect to the competition they over the world hold a great significance when could face from their imported competitors. it comes to giving a good opening to a film. In But before getting into more details of the Pakistan however, these festivals mean central point here, how about having a little something more. Not releasing their films in positive treat? If you are really a big movie rest of the whole year, filmmakers, during buff or even planning to visit cinema with these days expect government to give them a your friends or family; the good news is that competition free environment by banning there are at least four confirmed Pakistani foreign films; (especially the ones from across films and the same number of foreign films the border as they are considered to be the making it to cinemas this Eid, and thus it can direct competition due to language fairly be expected that it would be enough similarities), so that the local ones can have a entertainment for people of all tastes. clear field to play and get a good start towards On the other hand, though it’s a great regret to making it big at box office. mention here, but an another reality is that out This is why every year we hear the cry of of these four, none of the films is in national banning Indian films from industry language. The two big announced releases on representatives, which by-the-way gets louder this Eid would be director and louder as Eid dates start nearing up, so if Shehzad Rafique’s Ishq Khuda you see the same thing happening this year; And Syed Noor’s Shareeka. don’t be much surprised. The other two; the comparatively smaller ones For filmmakers however, scenario could be are, Sher Dil by Iqbal Kashmiri and Gujjar da very different and tough this time around. Kharka by Arshad Khan, again both in Let’s not get into the argument of quality of Punjabi language. Moreover, it is expected films or Urdu-Punjabi or urban-rural factors. that Arbaaz Khan’s recently directed Pashto It’s actually about the fate of upcoming Eid

film Qasam is also in the line to get cinema bookings to be released on this Eid-Ul-Fitr. Now let’s come to the more scary part; the foreign films, at least five confirmed foreign films will be screened this year on Eid in local cinemas. These include, Salman Khan Starrer Ek Tha Tiger, The new Batman film–The Dark Knight Rises, children animated film and second installment of Sammy series Sammy 2: Escape from Paradise, Geo films backed Total Recall, and Jona Hill, Ben Stiller starrer Sci-fi comedy The Watch. Not only that, according Atrium Cinema’s ‘Releasing this Eid’ list, The Bourne Legacy of famous American spy ‘Bourne series’ is also getting a space in cinema this Eid. Despite the fact that government might ban the screening of foreign films on three Eid days, it is quite expected that these foreign films will give the local ones a real run for money once the Eid days are over. Let’s remember again what happened last year, if comparison is to be done, the last year’s local films on Eid were way stronger than the ones releasing this time. They included Reema Khan’s high budgeted, high quality and well marketed Urdu film Love Mein Gum, Syed Faisal Bukhari’s action-thriller Bhai Log and Syed Noor’s Punjabi film Jugni. Three of them combined, couldn’t face the competition given by Salman Khan Starrer Body Guard, which really put a great cut in the box office numbers of these films. Comparative to what our filmmakers have for us this year, the above mentioned local films did not only enjoy a countrywide appeal– (two of them being in national language)– but were also marketed heavily in almost all mediums. They might have performed well, had they been released in a different time frame. Secondly, it is now clear that Shaan just has a cameo role in Ishq Khuda, while core of the

film actually revolves around the Love triangle between Ahsan Khan, Meera and Emirati actor Wiam Dahmani. This actually means that fans may get second thoughts while deciding whether to watch the film or not. For such people, Shaan and Saima starrer Shareeka might not be a bad choice. Ek Tha Tiger is already expected to become India’s highest grossing film, whereas, The Dark Knight Rises has already created enough headlines to get people in hordes once the film is released. God knows how our films are going to survive or at least recover their cost in such a hostile environment. Even if the government stops foreign films to be screened on this Eid, our films are already pretty much facing towards a pitfall. The best scenario for Shehzad Rafique or Syed Noor or any director as the matter of fact in such a case could be to back out from the ‘Eid Release’ idea and release the film with a delay of say 15 or 20 days, so that these mammoth looking foreign films are at their lowest strength when the local ones could give them a final kick and enjoy a much favorable time in cinemas. In the meanwhile, heavy marketing should be done through all possible means, so that when the time comes, people are not confused over the choice of these films over others. Decisions are to be taken by those who have all the power regarding their film, but these are some of the facts that cannot just be ignored. If still some director takes the chance of releasing his film in such a scenario, we would just term it as a brave call. Just to leave you with a last thought, here is an interesting fact. Shehzad Rafique’s Ishq Khuda and Salman Khan starrer Ek Tha Tiger both have the same distribution partner in Pakistan–IMGC Global Entertainment– so if both the films come face to face in cinemas this Eid, it would be really interesting to see how they perform against each other

Update: According to the latest post by Ishq Khuda’s official Facebook page, the movie is not releasing on Eid-Ul-Fitr this year anymore and will release on Eid-Ul-Adha instead.

Jun 05,2012 - by admin (www.lollywoodcafe.com) The present body of Lollywood film industry is very different from the past, when the cinemas were crowded with people. After the partition Pakistani film industry faced a number of problems but after some time the industry stood up on its own feets. Industry reached to a high level due to the hard work of many of the artists of that time. The golden period of Pakistani film industry started in 60′s. Actors like Waheed Murad, Zeba, Shabnam, Nadeem, Muhammad Ali and many others proved themselves through remarkable actings. Not only actors but directors, singers and writers also did outstanding work which is memorable. After a long phase of success the film industry gradually decline in 90′s as many old and favorite actors leave the industry and new were too young to took their places. Directors like Syed Noor and Javed Sheikh tried to push the industry up but failed as majority of movies of that time were flopped. A number of movies released which were not family movies as these movies contain such contents which were far away from our Cultural and Moral values. I think the basic reason of the downfall of Pakistani film industry is not the lack of talent but the major reason is the farness from our culture also the industry was ill-treated by the government in previous years. The bad story line and lack of good film making equipment force a number of artists to leave the film industry, some of them also move to neighbor country to show their acting skills. This is really a serious issue and need consideration by the seniors in the industry. In my opinion, the basic needs for the revival of our film industry are as follows; 1. Investment to increase the number of movies per annum and also to upgrade the standard of movies. It could be risky but a very bold step for the rejuvenation of industry. 2. Payment of good amount to the artists, so that they avoid serving other countries and show their skills in front of their own cameras. 3. Good storyline which should raise social and economic issues of our country. 4. Movies must show our cultural and moral aspects, so that people could move toward cinemas with their families without hesitation. 5. Good equipment must have to be introduced to improve standard of movies. 6. There must be a good promotion of the movies so that people wait eagerly for new movies. 7. People should have to go to the cinemas and promote the work of their artists. They have the right to criticize for the betterment. 8. Producers and Directors of the movies must have to remove vulgarity and in this way they can also show a good piece of work like movies from other Muslim countries. Now a days, many young people are entering and investing in Lollywood with new and interesting movies like Waar, Kolachi, The Dusk and Fatima after a huge success of Khuda Kay Liye and Bol by Shoaib Mansoor. Let’s hope for the success of these new pieces of arts by the young talent as the future of Lollywood depends on their work. Source : saypeople.com

Latest Interviews of

Fawad Afzal Khan Courtesy mag4you Jack of two trades, and master of both! - this is what comes to mind when one thinks of multi talented singer and actor Fawad Khan. Best of all, Fawad is as down to earth as they get. Fame and fortune haven't been able to get the better of him and he doesn't intend on letting them either! Within the film and music industry, he's known as one of the nicest people to work with and extremely hard working. Conducting the following fun interview was a great insight into Fawad's world. Read on and you'll understand why. What, in your opinion is different in the Fawad Khan of EP and the Fawad Khan who is a movie star? Nothing really, I guess. That question would lucky in being able to work with the best of be better answered if and when I do a couple the best of the industry in whatever I’ve more movies - which I do intend to - of the done uptil now. So basically I’ve done a same caliber. Other than that, I think it has little in everything that comes under the added to my experience. I have been very media bracket of Pakistan now. Tell us a little bit about how you landed the role? Well, a friend of mine, Bilal Lashari, was little overweight made me unsuitable for the assisting Shoaib Mansoor (and is a very consideration of the role. After a couple of talented up and coming director in our months, when Ali Zafar backed out, I got industry) at the time the casting was being another call from them and they asked me to finalized. They had everything finalized but come down again. By then I had lost quite a for some odd reason I think they just wanted bit of weight and they thought it would work to check out more options. So I met Mr. out fine so things just took off from there. Shoaib at his office and I guess my being a

What was your initial reaction to being offered a role in a Lollywood film? I felt honored to have been offered a role by of the creative side of the media and music someone who had been termed as The Guru scene in Pakistan. Can you actually relate to the role you played? Well, to some extent, I think yes. But then again, everyone can, at least anyone who may have undergone some sort of transition or at least faced confusion when tallying their concepts of practicality with the Word of God, which frankly speaking has been completely erased from our lives at the

moment or at least the conscious reference to it. More importantly cultural trends have been infused into our religious beliefs so things get even more difficult when you try to understand a uniform and universal belief, which isn’t so uniform due to the existence of sects.

How much did you have to prepare for it if it was in contrast to THE Fawad Khan? What do you think makes a good actor? Do you consider yourself to be one? I got the script in pieces. When I was first tell me and intuition. I think the definition of approached with the role I didn’t know a good actor is he who can provoke you much about the intricacies and details. I got positively or negatively. If you manage to to know with time. There are some scenes invite the attention of the audience to what which are completely different to the you’re saying then you’re on the right track. original scenes or modified versions of the I would never even consider judging myself scenes in the present version. So I think I at this point because in order to become didn’t get much of a chance to prepare. I just something big, I think that initially it’s best mainly went with what the director had to to get feedback from others.

What is your overall opinion about the desi film industry? What did you expect and were your expectations met? Not very bright at the moment. The industry around the globe. I think I got what I had fallen quite a bit but this film has expected. People have liked my performance become a revival of cinema by instigating as I gather from the comments that I get now others to enter the arena and push the and then. I guess at this moment that’s industry into a modern era, to a level at enough for me. which you can compete with the other giants How is Shoaib Mansoor to work with? A perfectionist and difficult to please but then again that’s his way of working. Judging from what the products turn out to

be, that may as well be termed his forte. As far as his behavior goes, he is very kind and understanding.

How did you bond with the rest of the cast, particularly the cinema giants like Naseeruddin Shah and Shan? The courtroom sequence had already been and no judges. With Shaan, things were shot when I came onboard so my scenes great. He is a really nice guy and a great were done solo. When I did it there was no performer. Naseeruddin Shah, no audience, no lawyers How was the experience? Exciting, scary and exhausting. We all know that KKL is a blockbuster movie. Everyone who has gone to see it is singing praises. There is another group, however, that sees things differently. Why do you think that is? If you’re referring to the other school of are entitled to it. Other than that, I don’t thought when it comes to the subject then I think that I’ve come across anyone else who think it's just a matter of opinion and they has held a bad opinion about the film.

How effective is our media in promoting our local music and film industries? Not very good but with this film and its potential that can be tapped if the media music promotion, (which was huge and giants in this country want to. brilliantly planned), I think there is massive

Will you be appearing in any more movies and what would you be looking for before signing on the dotted line: the role or the dough? Would love to if any other deals pop up. then the latter can be overlooked to some Both I guess but if you talk of preference extent if the role is that interesting. Have you thought about composing for films? Have you been made any such offers? Are you planning on taking them? What can we expect? I would love to because the drama of on more for the advertising, music and TV soundtracks really fascinates me and that is scene through my studio because that’s what what I’m more inclined towards doing. No is mainly happening in this country at the offers as of yet. But I’m generally working moment. What are you up to these days? Any projects in the pipeline you’d like our readers to know about? Just running a studio with two friends and knowing, then I would rather keep it a working on my own compositions at the surprise. moment. If the readers are so inclined on

What do you enjoy more: singing/composing or acting? Do you miss performing in front of a live audience? When can we expect to see you in action again? Composing and acting. Yes, I do miss extent. There was a high about it. Maybe, performing in front of a live audience to an you’ll see me very soon. A lot of your peers are heading over across the border to claim their 15 minutes of international fame. Have you been approached and are you planning on doing so? I don’t blame them because things run pretty interesting pops up or if I have something to slow around here and aren’t normally very pitch that doesn’t work around here then rewarding. I’d like to do something for my sure. country and my people first but if something Can we expect another album from EP? Or maybe a solo project? No, not really. To the other half of the question no comments as of yet. After doing some serious acting in KKL, what did it feel like going back on screen as part of a fun ad? It was great. It was definitely something dancing, I have two left feet. It was different because I don’t see myself, definitely an exhausting experience yet contrary to the views of people that I often exhilarating at the same time. I guess mainly get feedback from, as a chocolate hero with because I got to work with Asim and Farooq a fun side. Secondly, when it comes to

Who directed the ad and how did you like working with him/her? Asim Raza. I’ve worked with Asim and they’ve always made me feel important and Farooq on quite a few ads before this. I always extend the best treatment. I guess loved every minute of it and because they’re that automatically makes you fond of such really good at what they do and also because people and very few people in this industry we’ve gotten to know each other over the possess that quality. Overall, Asim’s whole years, it’s always a pleasure to work with team is wonderful. They’re great people to them. Another reason would also be that work with. When you see the ad on TV, are you happy with how it turned out? That goes without asking. Obviously anyone you and say, "That was really something. would feel thrilled to see even a glimpse of We loved every minute of it," which I’ve themselves in something that they’ve had the chance to hear from as many people worked on. 13th August: Blackout Plan by Cable Operators and Media Owners against SC’s Action against ‘Obscenity’ and ‘Illegal Indian Channels’ Pakistan Top Stories — 08 August 2012 Karachi, Pakistan, August 8, 2012 – An ‘Iftaar’ meeting of cable operators association held in Karachi on August 7, 2012, it was decided to counter Supreme courts recent actions against obscenity and illegal Indian channels being showed on Cable networks around the country. A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawad S. Khawaja and Justice Tariq Pervez had taken up a petition of former Jamaati-Islami Amir Qazi Hussain Ahmed and a letter by Justice (retd) Wajhiuddin Ahmed to the chief justice on which a notice had been issued to the Pemra chairman. After the meeting, Cable association members talked to Media owners who were also invited in this meeting, to completely Black out the verdict of Supreme Court which is expected to be against un-checked obscenity and banning of illegal channels.

PEMRA is also in picture here since very strong reactions were noted in the court proceedings on Monday, when the Supreme Court was surprised to note that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) stated that the government had neither a policy to monitor TV programs, especially of foreign channels, nor it had a clear definition of obscenity. Pemra’s acting chairman Abdul Jabbar was of the opinion that obscenity or vulgarity was a relative term because a program might appear to be vulgar to some people but not offensive to others. But the court corrected him by citing Section 20c of the Pemra Ordinance and Code of Conduct for Media Broadcasters and Cable Operators which prohibits airing of obscene, pornographic or any program injurious to public morality and against basic cultural norms and values. Abdul Jabbar again failed to satisfy the court when asked to provide a list of cases where Pemra action had been stayed by courts. He only said that an appeal was pending in a court against a private channel. The court asked him to categories programs with proper ratings as were done in the West so that people should know what they were watching. Jabbar sought a month’s time to research the matter. Rejecting the request for more time, the bench ruled that it is not yet forming a commission, but only granting a week’s time to the regulatory authority. However, a plan was devised in today’s meeting by Cable network association to Black out the coverage of this case on the electronic media on August 13, 2012 when one week deadline expires, as a strategy no talk shows will be allowed, no news coverage will be given to this verdict and 14th August packages will be used as an excuse for missing out the major development expected in this case. This will be done in order to protect their vested and monitory interests that are asymmetrically weakening the moral and social coherence of society. It is imperative that honest media personnel, News Anchors, Columnists and Writers should stand against this conspiracy against Pakistan’s society that has already suffered and devastated due to immorality that is plagued by obscenity that has even forced west to take per-emptive measures; though it is already too late for them to control the amount of immorality, molestation, rapes and other ills that result due to obscenity. We in Pakistan, have only started to bear the consequences on many fronts due to these vulgar productions in the name of entertainment. It is for the people of Pakistan to see if these anchor persons, and Journalists do? Will they succumb to the pressure of their owner and prove disloyal to their profession? Or will the stand up and expose the nexus of evil that is hell bent to destroy the core foundations of our society and faith.
