Welcome to the
Creative Whithorn Art and Craft Trail 2018 Come and join us on 11th and 12th August in wonderful Whithorn! Every year, Whithorn opens its doors to gather together the artists, crafters , musicians and makers of the region. The annual Arts and Crafts Trail will have many new features including Piper Matt and The Moot playing in the streets and a market area with stalls. Entry to all exhibitions is free, including the prestigious ‘5 More’ exhibition. The prestigious Five More Exhibition will once again be running alongside the Trail. Held in the Ninian Gallery at the Whithorn Story Visitor Centre, the exhibition runs through July and August and entry is free. Set in the Machars of Galloway, the Royal Burgh of Whithorn provides a beautiful location for our talented local artists and makers to show you their work and introduce you to their creative world. Whatever your interests, we’re sure you’ll find something that delights and inspires you.
Why not visit our Roundhouse while you’re here... Tour times are 11.30am, 1.30pm & 3.30pm. Each tour lasts about 30mins. Tickets allowing all day access are available from The Whithorn Trust.

What else is going on? Other members of the community have also been preparing for the Trail weekend, with their own creative welcome to the town. You can expect to see beautiful floral displays by the Whithorn ‘Evergreens’ and Members of Whithorn Arts Group will be displaying work in the Community Centre. Take the children to The Discovery Centre to get their faces painted by Little Penguin Paints and enjoy live street music provided by Piper Matt and an evening in The Calcutta Inn with The Moot. www.creativewhithorn.co.uk

The Whithorn Trust Whithorn is the site of the earliest known Christian settlement in Scotland – dating to the mid fifth Century AD. Visit the Latinus stone at the Priory Museum – not only the first Christian monument in Scotland, but also the earliest evidence for literacy in Scotland ! Experts now believe that Christianity was grafted onto the local culture of the late Iron Age. Over the last four years, the Trust has been working with archaeologists excavating an Iron Age settlement nearby and has reconstructed a roundhouse, based on finds of the 5th Century BC. A guided tour of the roundhouse, with full explanations of its features and daily life in the middle Iron Age is part of the Whithorn Trust ticket. The popularity of Whithorn’s saint, Ninian, grew to its peak by the 16th Century, with pilgrimage routes leading to Whithorn from all over Scotland, England and by sea, from Ireland and the continent. The Whithorn Trust is now promoting a 143 mile walking route from Glasgow to Whithorn, following the westerly route. The Ninian Gallery upstairs is host to the Five More exhibition, featuring prominent artists working in several mediums. Tickets include: roundhouse tour, Priory Museum, audio visual presentations and exhibition of artefacts.
Visit the 70293 Project in Whithorn Priory The 70273 Project has an ambitious aim – to blanket the world in Love. The number that lies behind The Project is the number of babies, children, men and women who were killed between January 1940 and August 1941 by the Nazi Regime because they were deemed to be ‘imperfect’ and ‘unworthy of life’. If two doctors put a red cross on an individual’s medical assessment form, it was the kiss of death, and they were killed by lethal injection, gassed, starved or shot. And that is what The 70273 Project is all about. It is a mass petition for love and humanity, being signed in stitches from people all over the world, in over 100 countries. The crosses that you see displayed in Whithorn Priory during the trail represent 2,539 lives. We are delighted that they have found a new temporary home in the Priory at Whithorn …… Please take a 70273 Project Postcard, and send it to someone to spread the Love. You can leave a message on the Love Tree about your impression of The 70273 Project, and if you have been affected by The 70273 Project and would like to talk to someone, please ask to speak to the Chaplain on duty. Eventually, the whole of The 70273 Project will come together … estimated to be over 1,000 quilts. Ninian Gallery ‘Five More’ Exhibition Each year Creative Whithorn invites five artists from around the country to take part in our prestigious 5 More exhibition. This year the exhibition runs for a longer period from 2nd July to 2nd September in the Ninian Gallery at the Whithorn Trust Visitor Centre. This year’s artists are Pamela Grace, Archie McCall, Sarah Keast, Phil McMenemy and Rachel Elliot.
