Rotary Young Artists' Competition Kirkcudbright Art and Crafts Trail are pleased to work alongside Kirkcudbright Rotary Club to encourage the artistic talents of the children in the Stewartry. In the five years that the Rotary Young Artists’ competition has been running we have been privileged to see and enjoy many venue different artworks submitted by local 30 young people. Kirkcudbright Academy students and pupils from their five partner Primary Schools always take part and the standard of work produced gets better and better each year. The variety in the interpretation of the subject that has been set is always worth viewing. This year the theme was inspired by the exhibition ‘Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable’ by Damien Hirst. Trophies, prizes and certificates are awarded in three categories;

Magnificent Sea Hames We are very lucky to have the wonderful willow crafted SEA HAMES horse coming to Kirkcudbright for our 15th trail. Hand crafted by artists Alex Rigg and Trevor Leat of Oceanallover, its journey from home to Kirkcudbright will turn many heads! When we began negotiations and saw it we knew that it just had to come to Kirkcudbright. We loved having the Kelpies here and are pleased to have this large and beautiful sculpture for the Art and Crafts Trail 2018.

Follow our Facebook page for updates on its arrival and set up position nearer the trail time. Our visiting sculpture will provide great photo opportunities and will prove an attraction for residents and visitors alike.

Kirkcudbright Stones Are Taking Part In Our Trail There is a dedicated group of people in and around Kirkcudbright who bring a lot of fun and joy into the lives of the children with their wonderful painted stones. Helpful clues are given alongside photos of the stones on their Facebook page and the treasure hunt begins. We are very pleased that the group will be taking part in this year’s trail, with stones based on the pirate theme. So, keep your eyes peeled, look round venues far and wide, if you find a stone you can take it home !

Greyfriars Church, venue 13, has been a welcome part of our trail for many years and is well worth a visit with its vibrant stained glass and many interesting features. This year the venue will be hosting two events: ‘Stories from the Sea’ activities and story telling for children, and also beautiful flower arrangements based on Famous Scottish Women. Created by the congregation, they will undoubtedly enhance the fabric of this beautiful ancient church. Why don’t you look at the arrangements and see if you can work out which lady each represent before checking to see if you are right. Do visit this venue and be inspired.

Autumn and Winter Events in Kirkcudbright Ghost Walk 31 Oct 2018 Afraid to go out alone on Halloween? There is no need to worry! The ghosts of Kirkcudbright are a friendly lot. The Art and Crafts trail organise this safe family walk around the Old High Street and museum area, all are welcome. Maps are sold by the local pre-school group to raise funds for their group. Free costumes are loaned out by the trail. See posters or look at our Facebook page nearer the time for information.

Winter Wonderland Sat 8 Dec Have you ever seen Santa arriving by boat? It is an annual attraction on the Kirkcudbright calendar, and not to be missed! You can feel the excitement rising with the high tide when he is due to arrive. After leaving the reindeer to rest on Ross Island, Santa makes his way to Kirkcudbright harbour and then onwards to his Grotto in the Parish Hall. A fun time for children of all ages on Winter Wonderland day, make sure it's on your calendar too.

Christmas Tree Exhibition Preview Friday 30th November from 5pm, then each weekend up to and including Sunday December 23rd. Saturdays 10am - 4pm, Sundays 12pm - 4pm. Viewing outside these times by appointment. The Parish Church opens its doors to all during December when it holds this uplifting annual event. The range and type of trees that are on display are well worth viewing. So many local shops and Kirkcudbright groups enjoy taking part. That includes us, the committee of the Art and Crafts Trail. We love coming up with our yearly quirky take on the Christmas tree theme. Do pop in and see this special exhibition.

Kirkcudbright Festival of Light 5-14 October 2018 Celebrating the beautiful light of this coastal town - the festival will include inspiring light installations and international quality musical performances, alongside a vibrant programme of events at the new gallery.

Vote of thanks We have watched our trail grow from small beginnings to being an award winning four day event and part of the Kircudbright Summer Festivities. Our Trail provides a showcase for our beautiful Artists’ Town and the talented folks who live in or are associated with Kirkcudbright. We know that we could not run it without the cheerful friendly band of townsfolk whose willing help oils the wheels of the trail making things run smoothly. Our very grateful thanks to them and also to you our visitors. Your comments and Facebook interaction are valuable to us, do return we will always be pleased to see you. Best wishes!
