J

oe and Jan Jordan have been creating memorable and romantic transportation experiences for brides for 38 years. The Texas wedding industry suffered a great loss with the passing of Joe Jordan on January 9, 2022. You could not miss Joe, his smiling face and attention to detail made him stand out. As a founding vendor of the Bridal Extravaganza show, Joe worked to protect bride’s transportation investments by educating brides and fellow limo vendors on proper licensing requirements. His stylish wardrobe ways were only outdone by the vintage vehicles he rented. He is missed.

THE NEXT BRIDAL EXTRAVAGANZA SHOW IS JANUARY 2023

TRENDS

The January

Bridal

Extravangza was a Huge Success!

Photos by Emmanuel Aguirre The Bridal Extravaganza took place at the George R. Brown in January 2022. A new sense of renewal and optimism swept through the crowd. Brides are definitely ready to get back to the business of wedding planning. Brides were gifted with masks provided by EB, Inc. The show offered a new, touchless feature where brides and wedding vendors could exchange information via QR code. Both brides and vendors loved this safe way to communicate via our new exciting app, BrideScan. The most exciting events of the day were the fashion shows—the main stage was packed with gowns and brides giddy to see the models take the runway. There was a lot of excitement surrounding the Bride Tribe spirit competition as bride teams took the stage to create a TikTok video for the Bridal Extravaganza. Overall, brides, vendors and guests felt safe as they attended one of the first bridal events to take place in this Covid era. From the garter to the getaway car and everything in between—The Bridal Extravaganza—experience this Houston tradition. Tickets are on sale now for the next Bridal Extravaganza.

This is my all-time favorite perfume! With notes of Moroccan orange blossom and French lavender, it is the best combination of florals and musk’s. This is always my go-to for special occasions, and what more special occasion than your wedding day! yslbeautyus.com/fragrance Courtesy Photo

The white draped dress is a showstopper! It is super breezy yet classy, and put together all in one. Add a pair of colorful sandals and a matching color bag and you will be all set! Picture yourself walking down the streets of Positano or Istanbul in this gorgeous outfit: todie-for!! Add some simple jewelry and keep your hair natural for that clean summer look! @marianame

This serum is absolutely incredible, it is essentially vitamin B3 which has anti-inflammatory properties that aid in managing blemishes, reduces the appearance of pores and is overall great for textured skin. This is the one skin care product that I swear by, and it is the best base for a clean and glowy makeup look. theordinaryskincareproducts.com Courtesy Photo

Personally, this is a MUST for my wedding! There is nothing more beautiful than natural lighting. Picture this: you have your ceremony in the evening just before the sun begins to set, and all of the natural lighting pours into the room through the windows creating a soft and natural glow. andyandcarrie.com

WEDDING REHEARSAL LOOK

Let’s sidetrack a little from the traditional route and go for a classy, yet on-trend look with the white trousers and a feathery corset! This outfit would be perfect for a wedding rehearsal look. All you need to do is add a dainty necklace, some pearl or diamond earrings, your engagement ring (DUH!) and a pair of strappy kitten heels. As for hair, I would either go for a sleek back bun with two front pieces framing your face, or loose curls. Courtesy Cogatco Women's Clothing & Accessories cogatco.com

WILDFLOWERS

I came across these flowers during Visit the Venues at Bumble Bee Ranch. I was completely obsessed with the colors and how nicely the green contrasts with all of the different vibrant colors. I think this is something I would want at my wedding, for the bouquet and as decoration on the tables! Roger Sanchez Flowers by @mkeventshouston

L

auren met Lance on Bumble and their relationship progressed quickly. On their third or fourth date her new man tripped and fell while they were walking around downtown Houston. They now say that corner is where he “fell for her.” Lauren had a trip planned and jumped at the chance to go shopping and visit the nail salon with her mom and some of Lance’s family. Her mom was “just driving around downtown” Houston, when she pulled up to the very same corner where Lance had fallen for her. He was standing there, popped the question, and they celebrated with their family and friends. Lance had coordinated the whole day. A couple of days later, they celebrated their engagement in Spain and Portugal. Their wedding date is October 21, 2022 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. They opted for a destination wedding because they are ‘pick up and go’ people. They love traveling, so what better way to commemorate their special day than with a tropical background and loved ones. Lauren has a big family, and since Lance played professional football overseas he has a ton of friends scattered all over the world. Lauren and Lance believe in giving back. They are spending the first half of their honeymoon doing a mission trip. According to Lauren, the main reason they hit it off so well is because they both have the natural desire to care for others and give back. Lauren found the Bridal Extravaganza Show through Instagram. When she and her mom attended, she was blown away by the large vendor selection.

BILLBOARD BRIDE Everything she could want and need for her wedding was in one place. She realized the value of seeing people and products in person instead of relying on social media images. She also enjoyed the happy environment where everyone was smiling and in a good mood. The Bridal Extravaganza is a positive experience. Lauren saw the Billboard Bride QR code as she walked through the Bridal Extravaganza and scanned it to see what it was about. She filled out her information and next thing you know she got an interview, then a very exciting phone call. She has been chosen to be the next Billboard Bride! Lauren exclaimed that it was such an eye opening and fun experience, she then proceeded to say that she met so many incredible people throughout the entire process and is so utterly thankful to have been a part of it all! The Billboards will be up all over Houston soon and she is over the moon. She thinks she will have to pull her car over when she sees a billboard for the first time because she is going to freak out The two Billboard Bride photoshoots were nothing short of incredible. From the décor to the venues to the dresses and the bride, everything was spectacular. The Grand Galvez, the queen of the gulf, has been welcoming guests to Galveston for over 100 years. Lauren and the photoshoot collaborators felt right at home in one of the most pristine wedding venues on the island. Rexberry Luxury Weddings and Events handled the decor, Mayra at Simple Beauty Artistry did the makeup and Ventura’s Bridal Fashions provided the Princess gown. Ivan Garcia of Ivan Garcia Studios worked his magic with the camera. The striking table featured a gorgeous floral arrangement with pinks, greens, purples and peachy colors accented by gold candles and plates. Lauren wore a beautiful gown with a divine v-neck style bodice with beads,

A dazzling red chandelier, black and white tiles, and the most incredible bouquet of red roses you have ever laid eyes on accented Lauren’s strappy Tatiana dress from the Disney collection at Allure Bridals. This look was executed astoundingly, her makeup featured a runway-ready red lip for a pop of color; her hair, a stylish up-do. by Chelsea Andoe

Shining Stars

Set to a tone of light pinks and blues, Blythe and Brandon’s double ring ceremony took place on the very coveted and lucky date of October 10, 2020. The limestone architecture and exquisite chapel made Briscoe Manor the perfect venue for this couple. The location in Richmond, Texas was very convenient for their family and friends.

The ceremony and reception were customized to fit the couple’s personality. They incorporated both of their families in a ceremony to create a unique and beautiful piece of glass art by Unity in Glass. After a touching toast from her father, everyone enjoyed a five-tiered cake from Who Made the Cake. In lieu of a guest book, well wishers were asked to sign on a commemorative photo frame. In keeping with Covid-19 protocols sanitizer was readily available. The wedding was full of sparkling details. The bride wore a stunning A-line dress by Impression Bridal and shined in her headpiece by Dareth Coleborn. The couple honeymooned in Antigua and Cancun.

The bride and bridesmaids all wore matching pj’s and got glammed up by Kiss & Makeup. It was all tears when Blythe’s father and brother got a first look at her prior to the ceremony.

ANNETTE BARBARA SANTAMARIA WILLIAM ANDREW COX August 14, 2021

Andy and Annette met online and enjoyed their first date at Emmaline’s in Montrose. A little less than a year later, Andy proposed in Las Vegas. “We went to see a Cirque du Soleil show and then had dinner at the Prime Steakhouse in the Bellagio hotel – our table was on the outside deck directly in front of the beautiful fountains. During dessert, Andy surprised me by proposing to me with a gorgeous diamond ring that he had picked out and selected the design! I was completely surprised and extremely happy to accept his proposal,” says Annette. An intimate ceremony was held in the Tin Roof Barn at The Grand Hall in Montgomery, Texas. As the party began, twinkling cafe lights and huge vintage chandeliers created an ambiance to make any heart skip a beat. The bride was stunning in a beaded and sequined gown by Mac Duggal.

Bride’s Advice: “In the early stages of wedding planning, read local bridal magazines and attend a Bridal Extravaganza show to get ideas for all aspects of your wedding (e.g., venues, caterers, cake, music, photographers). In the weeks leading up to the wedding, pamper yourself with getting massages, facials, mani-pedis, body treatments, and spending quality time with close girlfriends to help keep you calm and relaxed! Have a wedding planner coordinate all the activities on the day of the wedding. Enjoy every minute of your wedding day and be sure to connect frequently with your groom during the reception!”

- 46 -

Photos by ChrisWPhoto.com

Annette’s favorite part of her wedding was walking into the ceremony venue with her two brothers and seeing so many family members and so many wonderful friends. “In particular, I loved seeing my soon to be husband that I adore and love watching me come down the aisle! It was truly a magical moment,” says the bride. Andy loved seeing the grandchildren as flower girl and ring bearer walk down the aisle followed by his beautiful glowing bride and seeing her look so radiant and happy.

MIRANDA BENNETT JUSTIN DAVID COX September 17, 2019

A REASON TO CELEBRATE The Proposal: After a long work week, Miranda came home to find Justin enjoying a beer on the porch. Justin suggested they go to Justine’s, a newly opened restaurant on 5th street. Before getting ready, Miranda took a quick break while scrolling through her phone on the couch. Justin suddenly urged her to get ready, as they needed to celebrate. Miranda was confused as to what they were celebrating, but when she put her phone down, she saw him down on one knee with a ring in his hands. The Location: Both the bride and groom have sentimental ties to San Antonio, so they knew it would have to be there. For their venue, they chose The Hotel Havana as they’d been there before for quick trips and weekend getaways. The building was built in 1914 and its architecture made them feel as if they were in a different time. Bride’s Advice: “The best advice I received was to remember to connect with my husband throughout the wedding itself, to make a point to seek him out for eye contact, to steal moments with just him. That was the best tool for grounding myself and remembering that ultimately, the commitment he and I were making was the reason for everything. It might sound basic, but a wedding can be the quickest way to lose sight of that simple fact. I also wish that I had allowed myself more joy, play and fun in the wedding planning process. I was so committed to checking things off of my list because I was so overwhelmed trying to balance it all with my regular responsibilities. [She is Founder & CEO of Miranda Bennett Studio.] “I wish I had spoken up to create more space in my work life for wedding planning and leaned into the possibility that the process could be fun rather than taxing. Last thing, but perhaps most important: do not skip a day of planner or a videographer for the wedding ceremony. Our day of planner was the MVP of the entire wedding. We did not hire a videographer for the ceremony and I still regret it.”

birthday, they stopped by local hot spot Agora. “That’s where he popped the question. No photographers, no other people around—just a simple and intimate proposal to suit us as a couple,” recalls Ashley with joy. Later, family and friends joined them to celebrate at a restaurant. They searched online for venues and when they called The Grand Hall in Montgomery, Texas, they knew they had found the location for their big day. “The staff was kind and eager to help us; we took a tour and loved it!” They specifically liked that the vintage barn was perfect for the ceremony and it was just a few steps to the hall, the perfect reception area. “We appreciated how they were patient and excited for us to experience our special day.” Their cake was created by aunt Silvia. She made a coffee cake Grooms Cake and vanilla cake Bride’s Cake. The guests were served cupcakes that were individually wrapped to ensure safety during the pandemic. EMMA KATE EBBS COLLIN ANTHONY STRAUS November 16, 2020

by Kenneth Castano

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL The Proposal: A little over a year into dating, Emma and Collin took a trip to Argentina. On the second day, after exploring the city of Buenos Aires, the couple relaxed in a park while Emma did voiceovers for some nearby squirrels. Collin would interrupt her with what Emma described as the easiest question she’s ever been asked. That night, Emma slept with tears in her eyes knowing that would be a hard day to beat. The only day that was more special: their wedding day!

- 58 -

The Location: The couple wanted to make sure their location was easy to get to from Houston and more than anything; FUN. New Orleans was the obvious choice for them! As the couple said, “if you aren’t having fun in New Orleans, you’re doing it wrong.” Bride’s Advice: “Make sure that all vendors do a run through with someone who knows what the drill is (or do it at rehearsal if you have the option)! Our music guy couldn’t make it to the rehearsal and the music ended up being out of order. He eventually got it right after our planner stepped in and helped get him situated. Everyone needs a practice run! Also, it’s ok if/when something goes a little sideways — it makes it more memorable!”

JAQUELYN TULLOS JUSTIN HILL

FAIRY LIGHTS AND ENGAGEMENT NIGHT

May 23, 2020

by Carolina Hernandez-Carrello

Jaquelyn, a benefit advisor, and Justin, an electrical engineer, met at church but their first date was a blind date set by a mutual friend. Justin was always trying to surprise her, and that also meant the proposal. Justin rallied the troops (meaning her roommates and best friends) to help with the surprise. They kept her busy throughout the day and took her to happy hour then to a Christmas party. During that time, Justin was planning a winter wonderland or as now they joke a Clark Griswold Christmas at her house. “It was incredible and sort of blinding! There were lights for days from the walkway, to the curtain lights around the porch, on the columns, and on the ceiling, etc. It was legit a Christmas wonderland,” Jaquelyn happily remembers of the engagement. The wedding took place at Astin Mansion, a 100-year-old mansion, in Bryan, Texas. Jaquelyn shined in a beautiful A-line dress by Blue by Enzoani from Weddings by Debbie in Katy, Texas. Both bridal and groom cakes were made by Peace, Love, and Cakes based in Bryan, Texas. Her cousin, Amanda Hamilton, owner of Cotton Boll Florals out of Jena, LA, did all the flowers and décor. Due to Covid, she had to change how food was being served. Originally, a buffet open concept style was in place with heavy appetizers and entrees along with a huge charcuterie board. Jaquelyn says, “That had to change, so I decided to have individual boards made for each guest placed at each seat while cocktails were being served. It was a hit, especially for the cheese lovers.” Bride’s Advice: “Planning a wedding is stressful; planning a wedding when a pandemic hits is just crazy. Plans changed every week up to three days before. You have to fight for your joy and peace. I would tell brides to write your own vows and have a first look. Or have two in my case. My dad saw me first, which was fun, especially since I felt his gun on his hip, and told him to put it away during the wedding! But more importantly, the first look with Justin was dreamy. I fought doing the first look up until the week of, when Christine, our photographer, convinced me to do it. I’m so glad I listened. It calmed us both down prior to the actual ceremony. We were able to get the nervous giggles out, have little intimate touches, and stolen kisses.”

Photos by Kelly Hornberger

WHEN LOVE BLOOMS The Proposal: When Micah needed professional headshots done, Krystyna suggested a friend to get the job done. This was all part of Micah’s plan, as he already knew Krystyna would suggest her friend to take the photographs. The stage was set, and after a back-to-back pose photo was taken, Krystyna turned around to find Micah ready to ask the big question. The Location: The River Oaks Garden Club Forum was the perfect choice for the couple. They were attracted to the character that flowed throughout the 100-year-old building. The intimacy of the back garden enhanced the special feeling of their wedding and the blooming flowers accentuated the love in the air.

DEMI RODRIGUEZ FRED GABUYA April 30, 2021

THE PROPOSAL:

After three years of being in a relationship together, Fred planned a cruise getaway that would be the greatest surprise of Demi’s life. On their first night, Fred gave Demi a special gift. It was a self-written book titled, “My Reasons Why.” With the sun setting, Demi and Fred read the book together on top deck of the ship. As Demi read on, the very last page read “And for all these reasons, Will you marry me?” and she looked back to see Fred down on one knee.

THE LOCATION:

The couple held their ceremony at St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, and their reception at the Pelazzio Reception Venue. The venue gave Demi the fairytale feeling that she had always dreamt of.

BRIDE’S ADVICE:

“I learned so much from my experiences as a bride, but my biggest tip would be to have a “last dance” with your husband as well! Everyone has a first dance but not many couples do a last dance. I had no idea this was even a thing! Our DJ and MC recommended it and it was one of my favorite parts

- 72 -

of our wedding day. At the end of the night, our MC asked all our guests to head outside to prepare for our sparkler send off. While they were outside, the DJ played one last song. My husband secretly told the DJ to play our favorite song “Perfect Duet” by Ed Sheeran and Beyonce. Tears rolled down my face when the song began and we just held each other tight and danced, just he and I alone in the empty ballroom. It was the first moment of the day where we could just be alone and soak it all in. It was absolutely magical. My second tip is to have one of your bridesmaids or family members “bring you back to the present” in the middle of the day (preferably before your reception). There is so much going on the day of your wedding that you sometimes get lost in it all and forget to truly be present. My Maid of Honor pulled me aside on the way to our reception and asked me to name one thing I could see, one thing I could smell, something I could hear, and something I could feel at that very moment, to bring me to the present. This honestly helped me feel more present and calm as well!”`

LAUREN MCKAY HORTENSTINE TYLER COLE JAECKS November 20, 2021

by Laurette M. Veres

SOUTHERN DREAM This classic southern wedding is the type Kari Loth, founder of Southern Bash, simply lives for. She had a blast bringing Lauren and Tyler’s southern dream to life.

The reception kicked off with guests participating in the Grand March, a fun and interactive small-town tradition. Guests then enjoyed chicken fried steak, traditional bride and groom cakes, and late-night breakfast burritos. And of course, the reception was not complete without the classic southern tradition, the Aggie War Hymn. After two-stepping the night away, Lauren and Tyler were sent off with an array of sparklers, driving away in an adorable Ford Model A car. Cake: TK United Floral: Blush and Bloom Dress: Coreena’s Bridal Boutique Menswear: Jos A Banks Bridesmaids’ dresses: Azazie

Photos by Dare to Aim Photo

In traditional Southern style, this couple had a large wedding party – 10 stunning bridesmaids in sparkly burgundy dresses, accompanied by 10 fine-looking groomsmen in Texas Tuxes and Stetson hats. This 550-guest wedding took place in Thorndale, Texas at the Kiesling Ranch. It incorporated many elements that delighted the guests, including ringbearers who were pulled down the aisle in a wagon, and an intimate branding unity ceremony.

Mas Colores Yucatan—the colors, the culture—all so close to home for Texans By Laurette M. Veres Instead of crossing the pond and heading to Europe on your honeymoon you’ll find culture, history, architecture, dining, beaches and more in the state of Yucatan, Mexico. The region was just named Best Wedding Destination – Mexico at the travel industries’ Travvy Awards; now is the perfect time to see what the buzz is all about. Mexico and the world marked the rebirth of tourism to Mexico at the travel industry’s most important event, Tuaguis Turistico, held in Mérida at the end of 2021.Yucatan’s state Minister of Tourism, Michelle Fridman Hirsch, said, “The rebuilding of the tourism industry in our state, and Mexico’s, has been incredibly important, as it represents the livelihood of so many people in our country and impacts so much of the international travel and tourism industry. We look forward to the renewal of the country’s general tourism industry.” Whether you are looking for adventure, cosmopolitan culture, or Mexico’s small-town traditional options, there is so much to see and explore. Here are some highlights.

HONEYMOONS

MAYAPÁN ARCHAEOLOGICAL ZONE

There are many, many ruins throughout the area; you should visit at least one. Mayapán is especially interesting because there are approximately 57 structures in the Central Plaza, a pyramid and a rare Observatory. In this site ceramic objects, mural paintings, and stucco sculptures have been recovered helping depict the history of this important Mayan city. You can also climb to the top of one of the pyramids, many historical sites no longer allow this guest experience.

TEKIT

Yucatan has some seemingly forgotten villages. Take a step back in time in Tekit as you meet local artisans and bakers. A traditional male shirt, Guayabera, is the standard dress here. Known worldwide as a garment associated with Cuba and Latin America, these light weight shirts are identified by four pockets and two rows of pleats. This men’s staple is standard attire at weddings and social events. Tekit is the epicenter of the guayabera production in the state, with more than 200 manufacturing workshops. Don’t leave without a guayabera.

UXMAL

In the north-west part of the Yucatán, Uxmal flourished between the 6th and 10th centuries. Its buildings are noted for their size and decoration. One of the best preserved of all Mayan sites, check out the video immersion event, Ecos De Uxmal, a fun way to see this site at night. Where to Stay: Hotel Resort Maya is an oasis on your way to the ruins. Learn more about Mayan culture at the hotel, enjoy a resort pool and views of Uxmal. The archeological site is walking distance from your hotel.

CAMINO DEL MAYAB

You might have heard of the Camino de Santiago hike and bike paths in Spain, and now the Yukatan has an option, too. This is a long-distance trail, created on ancient roads connecting 17 communities to one another. Hikers and bikers enjoy birds, plants and cenotes as they travel

- 84 -

from one community to another. Reservations are required so you can enjoy meals in private homes and stay at private Haciendas throughout your journey. Your passport will be stamped at each stop. We departed from Yunku and had the chance to check out Cenote Yunku. The stairs are steep, and worth the hike. The crystal-clear water and Stalactites create an other-worldly atmosphere.

MOTUL

The town of Motul is a great example of a Spanish Colonial town. Wandering through the market gives you the opportunity to take in the scents and colors of the region. Above the central Mercado, at Doña Evelia, you’ll find the birthplace of a popular breakfast dish huevos motuleños. Whether over easy or sunny-side-up, you’ll love the flavor combination of beans and tomato sauce, fried tortillas, habanero chile, and fried plantains.

Whether you are looking for adventure, cosmopolitan culture, or Mexico’s small-town traditional options, there is so much to see and explore. SAN CRISANTO

San Crisanto is a one of a kind eco-tourism destination including beaches, thousands of meters of mangroves and 45 cenotes. The members of Ejido de San Crisanto cooperative have previously promoted fishing, coconut, and salt for the region. Today, the focus is on tourism. Enjoy a lovely boat tour where you float through mangroves with your gondolier, observing the flora and fauna. Helecho Giante is a hidden cenote only accessible via boat on this tour. When you arrive, you will likely be the only group visiting.

SINANCHÉ APITOURISM TOUR

This part of the world is a buzz with information about bees. Find out how bees help the ecosystem, learn about honey production, and so much more. This area is famous for the melipona bee, a very special species that lives in the Yucatan. Sinanché is a destination located one hour from Merida, between Motul and San Crisanto. Here you can learn from a beekeeper, don a beekeeper suit and interact with bees! During the tour, visit several themed cabins where you can learn about the history, the process of honey production, taste honey and make a natural wax candle.

DINING IN MERIDA

Picheta: Located above the historic square, Picheta, offers contemporary cuisine with great views of the cathedral. This spacious restaurant has many great locations for a festive rehearsal dinner. The rooftop of La Plaza Central de Mérida, is sure to wow your guests. Micaela Mar y Leña: This hotspot is perfect if you are staying in the town center. See and be seen and don’t miss the grilled octopus, tuna and oysters Rockefeller.

Are you ready to take the next step into marriage? Take this quiz now to see how you and your future spouses money align. Put a "T" or "F" (true or false) for each question. If you agree on 8 or less its time to sit down with a financial advisor.

I do not give to the charities or the church. I do not save money from my paycheck. I have less then four weeks of take home pay saved. I do not have a bank account. I prefer to pay for bills by cash or money order. I have no dream of owning a home one day. I feel that I deserve expensive name-brand items to reward myself. I do not plan on retiring. I believe whoever makes the most money has the final say over household finances. I only pay the minimum on my credit card debt. I believe that all bills and household necessities should be split 50/50.

My credit score is under 675. I am currently delinquent on personal debt. I feel it is ok for a spouse to have a "secret" bank account if they are contributing towards bills. I do not contribute towards my companies 401K program.

I have less then 4 credit cards. I believe my money is my money and I do not have to consult my partner on how I spend it.

I have a financial commitment to a former spouse, friend, business partner, or other that will continue after we are married. I have a budget/spending plan that I refer to often. I do not believe in a shared checking account. I plan on buying/leasing a vehicle every 2-3 years. I feel that loaning money or signing an extended loan for family is not a problem.

If you answered A: Relationship woes can often be traced back to finances. Think twice about a partner who clams up when it comes to talking about money. One of the number one cause of divorce are finances. Broughton is a registered investment advisor.

If you answered B: Sounds like fun now...and of course you can always pay it off later but don't forget about interest fees, a future emergency or other debt you might still have. Lets not "debt dig".

If you answered C: Creating fun ways to spend time with your SI shows that the most important thing is just being with them. You're also creating ways to stay debt free and reach your mutual life goals while create financial harmony.

HONEYMOONS

Adventure Awaits in Wisconsin

Story and photography by Kathleen Axtell

Door County, Wisconsin is delightful, dynamic, and daring. It is a perfect place for an adventure filled honeymoon in a beautiful setting. Boasting approximately 300 miles of shoreline, this peninsula is home to numerous communities and towns. The communities in Door County have a lot in common: stunning views, friendly locals, quaint boutiques and shops, plenty of outdoor activities, zero chain stores or restaurants, and fresh farm-totable cuisine. Yet, each town has a distinct personality and exploring is an imperative. The Door County peninsula is surrounded by Green Bay on the west and Lake Michigan on the east. Gorgeous sunrises and sunsets are easily found throughout Door County.

SUNRISE

Cave Point County Park, Sturgeon Bay: Sunrise in the park is

- 114 -

breathtaking. The park, however, opens at 6 am and your best bet is to go in early or late summer to catch the best view. Bailey’s Harbor: Grab a coffee, head to Anclam town park, find a spot, and enjoy.

SUNSET

Waterfront Park, Sister Bay: Twilight is gorgeous. Waterfront Park is the largest public waterfront park in the county. There are plenty of places to watch the sunset. Anderson Dock, Ephraim: Colors explode as the sun sets on the historic, deep-water Anderson Dock. The graffiti house sitting on the dock was once a storage facility for sailors and merchants. Sailors would commemorate their arrival by noting it on the house. Today, the graffiti house is a community art gallery. Stop by, tour the gallery, create your own art on the house and watch a gorgeous sunset.

Newport State Park – Dark Sky: The dark sky at Newport State Park is a stargazer’s delight. On a clear night thousands of stars are visible. If you are lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the Milky Way. Located on the shore of Lake Michigan and at the end of the peninsula, New Port State Park is one of the darkest places in Wisconsin.

DOOR COUNTY FOR COUPLES

Door County is a perfect getaway for couples. The county has numerous ways to experience the peninsula. Outdoor adventures are available most of the year, including hiking, biking, and camping. The county has five state parks and 19 county parks. Trailheads are always nearby. Door County is a cyclist’s dream. Winding tree-lined roads and welldefined paths through the woods provide great rides whether you ride on the road or off. Bicycles can be rented on the island.

Peninsula Sate Park is a great place to hit the trails and has many going through woods, along the bluffs, and to the shoreline. Most trails lead to the shoreline. The county is dotted with wineries, breweries and cideries, and cherry and apple orchards. As of 2019, Door County was the fourth largest producer of cherries in the United States. Long-established Seaquist Orchards in Sister Bay produces approximately 6 million pounds of cherries annually. Stop by, browse the shop, and try the cherry pie! Door County offers many types of dining experiences including fine dining at AAA, fast casual at AAA and unique dining at AAA. You will not find an Applebee’s or McDonald’s in Door County. All restaurants are locally owned and operated and each bring their own flair to the table.

and try the Swedish pancakes with lingonberries and Swedish meatballs. If you are daring, give the pickled herring a chance! The restaurant does not accept reservations so plan to get there when they open at 7am for quick seating. Otherwise, plan to wait (and it is well worth the wait). You might notice something strange outside and on the roof of the restaurant…yes, goats on the sod roof. The goats spend their days on the roof and their nights in a barn on the outskirts of Sister Bay. Please note, goats are not on the roof in the winter. They are usually there from May to October. Door County is approximately a 45-minute drive from Green Bay and 2.5 hours from Milwaukee. Be sure to rent a car. Public transportation is limited, and walking is not a great option.

Make sure you stop by Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant

HONEYMOONS

La Casa de la

PLAYA There’s a new luxury resort in town By Laurette M. Veres

- 118 -

HONEYMOONS Luxury hotels of the world take notice. La Casa de la Playa is open for business. The car exits the freeway and enters the jungle. Excitement mounts as we enter the Xcaret Eco Park complex. Named for the nearby Mayan archaeological site Xcaret, the park opened 30 years ago about an hour south of Cancun. Guests enjoy beaches, snorkeling, underground rivers, an aquarium and more. Development has continued over the years and today the master plan is to have 12 hotels, at all price points, catering to all types of travelers. We recently visited the newly opened, adult-only all-inclusive resort, La Casa de la Playa; the gem of the hotel offerings. For the most discerning traveler, La Casa de la Playa is perched on the most pristine, iconic beach in the area. Take a deep breath and relax, you are about to experience the travel industries’ gold standard. The open-air lobby looks out over the teal blue ocean. Past the lobby, a 40-meter rectangular infinity pool darts out past the sand and jetties beckoning you to change into your bathing suit STAT. This waterway is sure to become an Instagram sensation. There are sixty-three ocean-view and butler-attended suites; the hotel seems to be carved into the rocks. Entering the suite is a dream! Highlights include an expansive bathroom and a walk-through shower with an ocean view. The private plunge pool has an outdoor bathtub leading to a lounge bed and two chairs; all centered around the stunning view of the ocean. Inside there is a desk, television and most notably, your own mini aquarium filled with tiny jellyfish. The minibar is included with your stay and replenished upon request.

The culinary journey is nourishment to a foodie’s soul. Before dinner, stop by Cava, an exclusive wine bar featuring more than 80 Mexican wines. Cava is open 24 hours a day; always open when guests need wine. Modeled after one of the 50 best restaurants in the world, Estero features a blend of Mexican and Peruvian flavors. One of the greatest chefs in Peru, Virgilio Martinez, has crafted a tasting menu featuring unique ingredients and flavorful offerings. The food here is really art, each presented on custom ceramic plates. Think fresh seafood, sushi, caviar and so much more. Not to be outdone by Martinez, the poolside restaurant has a menu crafted by renowned celebrity chef Martha Ortiz celebrating Mexico and all its wonderful flavors. Diners also enjoy majestic ocean views. At La Casa de la Playa, lounging by the pool is your activity. The only question is which pool? You’ve already

- 119 -

HONEYMOONS

heard about the Instagram-worthy pool on the main level, but wait, there’s more. Two more. One is upstairs at the rooftop where views are infinity-esk and awe inspiring. The next pool is the truly amazing private pool at the spa. Muluk Spa has astounding water views. Arrive an hour before your treatment to fully take advantage of this destination spa. Start with ten minutes in the sauna, followed by the steam room. Next, the rectangular hydrotherapy pool has several modes of relaxation. Enjoy a jacuzzi, then massage your feet as you walk over stones. Four spouts with varying degrees of water pressure ease tension as water falls onto the shoulders. Then turn on the bubbles and sit in an underwater reclining chair. Finally, enjoy the views from the edge of the pool. During treatments, therapists will help select relaxing oils to accompany treatments and work with guests to customize massages. Post treatment, yet another breathtaking area is set aside for herbal tea. Relaxation guaranteed. La Casa de la Playa offers celebrity-style access to upscale, exclusive experiences. Here are two standouts that both take place at the Xcaret park. Enjoy VIP access and up-close tour of the Tlachco theater’s technical operations, infrastructure and wardrobe. One special moment of the tour takes place from the bottom of the stage where VIPs step onto a platform and are lifted to the performance stage. Hundreds of attendees are seated, waiting to see Xcaret Mexico Spectacular, a 300 plus cast member live variety show, and you are part of the show! After waving at adoring fans, enjoy dinner in the VIP seating area. For an other-worldly dining experience – a must for a proposal or anniversary – a private dinner is served in Cenote Azul. Hundreds of luminaries float on the water as jazz music lofts through the air. A lovely wine selection and multi-course meal follows. We recommend saving this for your final evening, as this is a dinner that cannot be topped. For more information and to book your stay, visit lacasadelaplaya.com.

Plan Your Couple’s Escape Spread Oaks Ranch offers a luxurious escape, so close to home. By Laurette M. Veres Spread Oaks Ranch is one of the original Texas settlements. The term “Old 300” refers to the first 300 colonists Stephen F. Austin recruited to move to Texas in the 1800s. Two of those freshly minted Texas landowners, 36-year-old Tennessean Hosea H. League and 24-year-old Arkansan John Crier would stake their claims on lands that are now part of Spread Oaks Ranch.

Dining here is a treat. Most items served have been raised on property. The field-and-farm-to-table Texas ranch creations from Chef Ric Rosser change daily as ingredients become available. The smokehouse is always smoking as he cures meats for charcuterie boards and gourmet salads, his legendary kitchen creates a gastronomic symphony of spectacular meals.

Today this Texas gem is a buzzworthy luxury destination. About an hour from Houston, this pristine ranch is nestled along the Colorado River, rich in Texas history and full of Texas hospitality. From the luxe accommodations, field-and-farm cuisine, attentive staff and onsite sleeping accommodations for 24, to the infinity-pool and Texas country views, Spread Oaks Ranch impresses.

Live music fans love the Cozy Concerts series. One artist performs each weekend evening on the front porch underneath the moon and stars for a small group of Spread Oaks guests. The weekend Texas Weddings visited, the entertainment was Bob Schneider and The Secret Sisters. The festivities included dinner and drinks before the show and a special snack afterwards. The most exciting part of the evening was casually hanging out with the musicians after the show. The next
