Jeni’s Ice Cream I recently discovered Jeni’s ice cream while wandering around my local Whole Foods. I was delighted to find out they have multiple storefronts throughout Texas! This ice cream is made from scratch and boasts an incredibly smooth texture with a buttercream-like base. With a wide range of unique flavors to choose from, “Ooey Gooey Butter Cake” wins me over every time.

Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peels

Favorite Things Parties These parties became very popular over the holidays, but there’s no reason you can’t host one any time of year! So how does it work? Simply, invite the guests you want to attend and ask them to bring their favorite thing in a quantity of two (or however many you choose) within a set budget. For example, if the budget is $20, guests would choose a favorite thing that is around $20 and bring two of those. The Dr. Dennis Gross sample box I referenced earlier is right around $20, so I would bring two of those to the party. At the party, each guest will put their name in a bowl two times and present their favorite thing to the group, explaining what makes it so great and why it’s their favorite. That guest will then draw two names from the bowl and give their favorite thing to the two people drawn. It’s a fun and simple way to exchange gifts, and everyone walks away with two new favorite things.

COURTESY PHOTOS

Who doesn’t want to have that wedding day glow? And what’s even better is glowing every day. That’s why I highly recommend Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peels as a staple in any skincare routine. This 2-step process works to accelerate cell turnover, eliminate dullness, and promote radiant skin. It effectively removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells with gentle exfoliation. These peels come in three variations, each designed for sensitive, normal, and dry skin types, and can be found at most Sephora locations. Their sample box makes an excellent addition to any bridesmaid’s gift basket.

My brand of shoes. Adidas are classy and sensible. I wear them to the gym, work, and when I’m just hanging out comfortably. I’m always trying on different pairs and deciding if I really need to buy another.

A staple in my life. I swear by this product. I try to keep my self care routine simple, but I always have this polish on. It makes my nails look healthier and makes them stronger.

I love collecting stickers for my water bottle. I find cute ones and commercial ones for small businesses I frequent. I like to design stickers and want to print some of my own.

This is how I releax. Once every few weeks, I use a bit of Epsom Salt in a hot bath, light a candle, and turn on some music. The smell is nice, but it also benefits my skin. Doing something simple and taking time for myself makes me feel better.

Press Play What I collect. I love albums and using my record player. Music tells a story and record cases double as art that I lay out around my room. I got my first record at 16 and I have been collecting them ever since. My favorite is my deluxe edition Hozier album.

Happy Hour My drink of choice. Call me simple, but a glass of rosé is the best wine to get while out. It goes with everything, smells good, and the bottles are always so beauituful. My favorite brand is Cote de Roses.

BILLBOARD BRIDE MICHELLE’S ENGAGEMENT Michelle Schmidt and her fiancé Vincent talked about going to Italy to travel all around the country. In June 2023, they went to Sorrento, Italy. On their second day in Italy at the Amalfi Coast, Vincent proposed to Michelle. He hired a secret photographer to capture the beautiful, picture-perfect moment. THE BILLBOARD BRIDE EXPERIENCE Michelle has experienced the bridal show three times playing different roles in a wedding. The first time she attended she was in junior high. She was going to be the flower girl at a wedding. It was an exciting experience as a young girl seeing all the dresses and beautiful wedding decor. Her second time was two years ago because her best friend was getting married and she was the maid of honor. Michelle’s third time was one month after she got engaged. She loved the experience as a bride-to-be because she was made to feel special and able to apply for Houston’s Billboard Bride.

When Michelle received the notification that she was chosen to be the Billboard Bride, she was sitting on the couch with her fiancé and she felt like it was an honor to be chosen among all the applicants. For her photo shoot day, she took her mom with her and they were both very excited and enjoyed the lavish experience. From the make-up to the hair, she enjoyed every moment of it. It made her engagement and her future wedding real. Michelle says, “it was an experience I will never forget!”

PHOTOS BY WDR IMAGERY

Michelle’s favorite part of the show was the fashion show because she was able to see all the beautiful styles of wedding dresses and she began to get ideas on what dresses she would love. She enjoyed meeting the different vendors, obtaining their contact information and taste testing the desserts available. Michelle had the opportunity to start making note of everything that is needed for her wedding day. The experience made her very excited to start planning her special day.

MEGHAN JOY ROZIER AUSTIN MICHAEL RICE November 4, 2022

Meghan and Austin have a Christmas time tradition they share. They would go to the River Oaks area and stroll the community to see all the beautiful lights. The night of the proposal, Austin and Meghan had driven out to Austin’s hometown, The Woodlands, to enjoy Christmas lights with family and keep the tradition alive. When they arrived, they were walking and enjoying the beautiful display of lights on the houses, Meghan asked to stop to take a photo. Austin seized the moment and dropped down on one knee and asked Meghan to be his wife as his sister was capturing the special moment. Meghan cried joyful tears as she said “YES!” To Meghan’s surprise, her mom and extended family, and close friends came out from hiding behind the cars across the street. The cherished moment was celebrated with family and friends with a bottle of champagne and created a magical memory for Meghan that she will never forget.

Meghan Joy Rozier is a senior analyst and Austin Michael Rice is a supply chain director. They met at a mutual friend’s wedding reception. Their close friends noticed a connection and set them up. Meghan and Austin started dating in March 2018.

They held their rehearsal dinner at Landry’s in The Woodlands. They started with open bar cocktails followed by a delicious dinner. After dinner, they went to the patio and rehearsed. The wedding ceremony happened on November 4, 2022 at Iron Manor in Montgomery, Texas. Meghan and Austin knew what styles and themes they both wanted for their special day and knew they had a large family to accommodate. They chose this venue based on several factors but mostly because they fell in love with the venue. Their three-tiered cake was whimsical with two round tiers and one square. As an homage to her new last name, rice crispy treats were placed at every seat. A gold and emerald theme was carried throughout the event. One of the many wonderful things about Meghan’s and Austin’s wedding ceremony is that it was officiated by Meghan’s Godfather! After an elaborate meal, the dance floor was full of family and friends – dancing the night away. The couple honeymooned in Italy. Meghan’s Advice: Hire a coordinator!

HONEYMOONS

F

rom the bustling chaos of Cairo to the tranquil banks of Aswan, Egypt is a treasure trove of wonder waiting to be explored. Venture into the tales etched in stone at Karnak and unravel the mysteries concealed in the Valley of the Kings. Brace yourself for a journey that transports you back to an ancient world where modernity and antiquity coexist seamlessly. It was a moment we’d been waiting for with bated breath—we were about to enter the sacred grounds of the Edfu Temple in Edfu, Egypt, and we were the first and only tour group lucky enough to do so. “Hurry,” urged Ahmed, our guide, pushing us to snap pictures quickly. “This won’t happen again.” Throughout our expedition, we had encountered throngs of tourists at every temple, but this was a rare moment of solitude amidst ancient splendors. Our voyage of ancient Egypt and the Nile unfolded aboard the newest addition to the Viking fleet: The Osiris. On the eleventh day of our adventure, we achieved the Holy Grail of travel – a chance to capture a significant image without other photobombing tourists. Tick Egypt off your bucket list and see this captivating country through the eyes of your guide, an Egyptologist. Immerse yourself in the daily life of locals, tour magnificent temples, visit serene mosques, and explore intriguing museums. For an expedition like this, a cruise is the ideal choice, as the logistics can be daunting, and security is paramount. Many of the excursions we embarked on would have been treacherous to navigate without the expertise of the Viking crew. From the moment you touch down in Cairo, the Viking staff takes charge, ensuring your every need is met. The adventure commences in the capital city, Cairo, home to the international airport. From the base of the Fairmont Nile City, the pages of history come to life before your eyes as pyramids, citadels, and temples dot the landscape. Here are some of the standout highlights.

CAIRO

The Citadel of Saladin in Cairo is a UNESCO World Heritage site, once the heart of Egyptian government until the 1900s. Don’t miss the Egyptian Museum, a must-visit for the infamous King Tut exhibit. At the Pyramids at Giza, you can check a camel ride off your list. Though you can no longer stand at the foot of the Sphinx, you can still pretend to interact with this enigmatic guardian from a distance.

LUXOR

PREVIOUS SPREAD: THE GREAT PYRAMIDS ABOVE, TOP TO BOTTOM: A VIEW OF THE SPHINX WITH THE PYRAMIDS; THE CITADEL OF SALADIN

A quick flight takes you to Luxor on the east bank of the Nile River. Here, you board the Viking Osiris, embarking on a week of Nile navigation. Along the riverbank, you’ll encounter the ruins of two ancient temple complexes. Karnak Temple stands out, known for its sphinx-lined boulevard that once connected it to Luxor Temple. We were fortunate to witness Luxor in the evening when strategic lighting brought the carvings to life dramatically. Just across the modern-day Luxor lies the Valley of the Kings, a burial site containing tombs dating from the 16th to the 11th centuries BC. In 1922, the world’s attention was captured when King Tut’s tomb was discovered here. You can visit the tomb of the boy king and view his mummified remains. Deir el Bahari, a complex of mortuary temples and tombs on the west bank of the Nile, offers another awe-inspiring experience. In the Valley of Queens, take a private tour of Queen Nefatari’s tomb, one of the largest and most beautifully decorated graves in ancient Egyptian history. Despite being over 5000 years old, the vibrant colors on its walls could pass for artwork created just this year.

QENA

Dendera Temple is one of ancient Egypt’s most well-preserved temples and serves as a prelude to a week of temple hopping. Its distinct carvings,

including a depiction of Cleopatra, and glorious structures are a sight to behold. Back on the Osiris, a red carpet awaits, and the friendly staff welcomes you with fruit juice and a refreshing towel. As we depart from Qena, we enjoy a drink in the plunge pool.

ESNA, ASWAN, NUBIAN VILLAGE

Esna offers a unique stop where you can explore the village on foot without the need for buses, horses, or boats. Witness local artisans crafting clothing and creating local delicacies. The lively market is a fantastic place to purchase authentic fabric.

ASWAN

The Aswan Dam stands as a reminder of the modern side of Egypt, showcasing the Nile’s vastness and the importance of control. If you’re in the market for silk, the souk in Aswan offers countless options. After shopping, hop aboard a traditional Felucca for a scenic sail back to the boat. As we set sail, we’re treated to a breathtaking sunset over Aswan.

NUBIAN VILLAGE

For many Viking guests, a highlight is visiting a local school funded by Viking. We had the chance to sit in a classroom and interact with school children. We also visited communal housing, where the family adds a floor to the house when a daughter gets married. Often, the top floor remains under construction while the family raises funds to complete it. We even had a taste of local culture as we were painted with henna (temporary body art) and sampled local honey. Later in the day, we arrived at Philae Temple by boat.

EDFU

Viking excels at creating unique travel experiences, and Edfu was no exception. We were transported to the temple in Edfu via a horse-drawn caleche, offering an exhilarating ride through the village streets. A lively group of us watched as fellow cruisers sped past in their horse-drawn carriages. The final day was a leisurely one, spent sailing down the Nile from Edfu to Luxor. Esna, often called the “land of minarets,” offered a mesmerizing view of mosque features seemingly dancing on the Nile’s reflection as we bid farewell. From here, a swift flight to Cairo marked the beginning of the long journey home. Egypt, with its ancient wonders and modern marvels, had left an indelible mark on our souls. What a perfect way to start your new life together.

HONEYMOONS

Back in time at Barnsley Resort Honeymoon like it’s 1848 by Marisa Byers

I

t’s not often you get to “go back in time” and relive certain nostalgic experiences that are reminiscent of summer camp. And for some, me included, these were FIRST TIME EXPERIENCES. This honeymoon is like a refined adult summer camp for city folk. Barnsley Resort is situated in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains, a real life “storybook setting,” with an even richer history celebrated in every aspect of this spectacular resort. The property encompasses 3,000 acres full of exploration and wonder. The Barnsley Resort’s story began as a love story, the love between Godfrey Barnsley, a wealthy Englishman who came to the US in 1824, and his bride, Julia Scarborough of Savannah, Georgia. Mr. Barnsley purchased the land to build his beloved Julia, mother to his six children, a “grand mansion,” but she suddenly passes in 1845 of a lung ailment and construction halted. A year later, Godfrey is “visited in a dream by his late wife and in the dream, she instructs him to finish the estate for their children and future generations.”

- 66 -

By 1848, the estate and gardens of Woodlands are completed with magnificent gardens modeled after the architectural designs of Andrew Jackson Downing. The unique manor home even boasts “modern plumbing and real Italian marble.” Tragically, in 1906 a tornado rips away the roof of the manor home and the Barnsley descendants opt to not repair the building. In 1935, two great grandsons of Godfrey and Julia Barnsley, are in a dispute over the financial affairs of the estate and one brother kills the other, thus the remnants of the estate are sold at auction in 1942. Sadly, the estate, the formal gardens and historic buildings fall into ruin, and it sits untouched for almost 40 years. In 1988, a Bavarian prince purchases the estate and begins a massive restoration and rebirth of the historic gardens, focusing on maintaining the natural flora from its early days. The Barnsley Gardens and museum opens to the public in 1991 and finally, in 1999, the magnificent Barnsley Resort opens, offering an “English inspired village” nestled inside the phenomenal gardens. When we say, “English inspired

village,” think of ABC’s famed Wisteria Lane. Each cottage is unique and offers refined elegance. Once you arrive at Barnsley, there really is no need to go anywhere else. Outdoor activities are EVERYWHERE. Not only that, there is also something for EVERYONE at Barnsley. Golf? No problem, there is a Jim Fazio designed championship 18-hole golf course and Golf Performance Center that includes a “TrackMan” simulator and custom club fitting. Shooting Gallery? Beretta Shooting Grounds are on the property. In fact, Barnsley is home to “one of the southeast’s premier sporting clays facilities, with two 14 station courses and a covered five stand.” (Seasonal quail hunting on the 1800-acre preserve is available October - March). Horseback riding? Both lessons on horsemanship and guided horseback riding tours are available. If you prefer less, all along the property you can participate in the great outdoors independently, too. Take a nature hike, take a dip in the pool, borrow a bicycle for a tour around the property, canoe in the lake, channel your inner Katniss Everdeen at the archery center or

throw axes at the barn. The kids will love the miniature horses and fainting goats at the barn too! S’mores are a MUST try at one of the many outdoor fire pits daily from 8:00–10:00 p.m. Although the Barnsley Resort is for the outdoor enthusiast with all its incredible experiences, there is so much more that it offers. If spa treatments are more your speed, The Spa at Barnsley Resort offers massage therapy, facials and body treatments “utilizing the latest products from Eminence Organic Skincare and Societe Clinical Skincare.” Foodies need not worry with the variety of menu options on the Resort. When you are craving a quick light bite, Woodlands Grill To-Go or the Beer Garden will satisfy that urge. Ready to be dazzled? Enjoy dinner at the Woodlands Grill overlooking the golf course. The breathtaking moonlit views paired with Chef’s culinary creations are magical. The Rice House, an elevated dining experience on the property, is known for its 19th century venue and its ability to entertain large groups for events.

For guests 21 years of age and older, be sure to experience the Evening Bourbon Ritual in the Inn (Thursday-Saturday). Our host, Zach entertained and educated us about how and when bourbon was born and the differences between bourbon and whiskey and the like. This “presentation” is done in the main lobby area, which is home to the one-of-a-kind distillery that makes the very bourbon we sampled. I won’t share too much more here, because you will have to find out for yourself! One of the most unique and memorable activities that I had the pleasure of experiencing was the ancient Japanese art of Forest Bathing. Yes, forest bathing. Forest Bathing “emerged in Japan in the 1980s as a physiological and psychological exercise of taking in the forest atmosphere.” (Nat Geo 2019) It aimed to serve two purposes: offer an antidote to the “tech-boom burnout” and to get residents reconnected with the country’s forests. This alternative therapeutic approach was scientifically studied to see what REAL benefits forest bathing

really offered, and not surprising, individuals’ mental well-being increased, while stress and anxiety decreased. Our trained guide provided us with all the tools necessary to maximize our forest bathing encounter. One of our first tasks was walking through the gardens collecting leaves, flowers, bulbs, sticks, moss, anything that caught our eye to be used in a project set for later. Our guide educated us on all the native species of plants and flowers all along the grounds. We mediated under the arms of a huge oak tree taking deep breaths and really listening to the whispers of the gardens around us. We then used all the treasures we collected during our walkabout to journal and create whatever we envisioned. It left all of us inspired and enchanted by the natural and beautiful experience. On this honeymoon, celebrate the beauty and marvel that nature provides. You can opt to stay for a few days or stay a while, the staff and hospitality at the Barnsley is undeniable and should be experienced at least once in your life. Find out more at barnsleyresort.com.

¡Bienvenido! A Taste of Spain: A Memorable Spanish Dinner Party By Nikola Meyer Photography by WDR Imagery

- 93 -

S

INSPIRATION tep into a world of vibrant flavors with colorful elements as we share the joy and warmth of a Spanish-themed Engagement Party. When I think about Spain, it always reminds me of summer vacation, where we hung out at the beach, enjoyed some churros at a street market and went to dinner at our favorite beach-side restaurant. I wanted to create the same feeling, so I decided to incorporate sand and seashells on the table to represent the ocean and the beach. We also had a Sangria bar with different varieties of Sangrias. Inspired by the beach and the love for Spanish cuisine and culture, let me take you on a journey to experience an evening filled with delicious tapas, aromatic paella, crispy churros and Spanish-themed decorations.

WEDDING

INDUSTRY CONFERENCE by Angela Ramirez The annual Wedding Industry Conference was held on September 12 and 13, 2023. The event took place in the Ballroom at Tanglewood. There were many entrepreneurs in attendance who were ready to hear about wedding planning and business advice. On Tuesday, September 12, there were two different classes that took place. The speakers were Lorie Speich, CEO/ wedding business coach, and Shannon Tarrant, co-founder of Orlando’s Wedding Venue Map. Lorie led the Wedding Planner Mastermind class and Shannon led Wedding Venue Mastermind class. Lorie talked about various aspects of wedding planning. She went over on how to attract clients, communicating with clients, and how you can help guide them throughout their wedding planning experience. She went over business and wedding insurance and why they are extremely important. Shannon went over advice and tips for venues. She provided the audience with examples of how to connect with clients and how to provide a unique experience for them. On Wednesday September 13 there was a full day conference with seven speakers. Shannon Tarrant

started the conference with her speech “Under the Influence.” She talked about how to get customers, referrals, and how to make passive income with affiliate marketing. She also explained how some features on Instagram can be used to build closer relationships with other businesses. Up next was Ian Jose Ramirez, co-owner of Madera Estates, with his speech “Leads, Leads, Leads!” Something that stood out from his speech was his terrific tips on how to get reviews from clients. The third speaker was Nayri, a wedding fashion expert, with her speech “Dominate Social Media.” She shared her social media tips and an example of what a posting schedule can look like. She used the phrase “reflective work” to describe being intentional and setting time aside for your social media posts and work. She talked about the importance of a healthy work life balance and being intentional with what you do and your time. Next, Kirksey Gregg, founder of Kirksey Gregg Productions, started his speech, “Beyond the Trends.” His speech included his own firsthand experiences and how he has dealt with certain situations. He provided invaluable information for working with clients. He also

Craig Howard, owner of Ballroom at Tanglewood, gave his speech titled “The Keys to Successful Sales and Management.” He had amazing advice for venues and vendors. After him Renee Pool, partner/ general manger House of Hough, started her speech “Leadership Mastery.” She provided a lot of knowledge about leadership and building a positive work culture.

Shannon concluded the conference. Besides the conference being educational, it also provided attendees with the opportunity to network. There were some people who already knew each other, and many who connected for the first time. The room was filled with excitement for future possibilities, growth, and new connections.
