t’s not an understatement to say we are in a turbulent time for our city, our country and our world. The onset of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has created fear, concern and sweeping disruption. As we hit publish on this issue, the shelter-in-place is over, but the threat level is red. Our hearts go out to all who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

exi Abrego is Houston’s new Billboard Bride. Selected from thousands of brides who attended the January Bridal Extravaganza Show at the George R. Brown Convention Center, Lexi demonstrated her enthusiastic passion for wedding planning along with her grace and beauty. You can meet her at the Bridal Extravaganza July 18-19, 2020 and see her on billboards throughout the greater Houston area. The Billboard Bride photo shoot was a whirlwind of excitement for Lexi. A magical trip to Ventura’s Bridal Fashions was the first step in the process. The vast array of gowns available makes Ventura’s the perfect place to search for the Billboard Bride’s dream gown. “Each gown was prettier than the one before,” says Lexi. With dress in hand, the photo crew headed to Blackberry Park in the woods of North Houston to utilize one of the latest crazes in entertainment. Tipis (also known as teepees) create festival-like settings for weddings and events and add interesting depth and detail to photos.

BILLBOARD BRIDE Lexi and Emilio’s relationship began in 2014 and has grown deeper with time. Over the years, they found their favorite restaurant: Gaido’s Seafood, located on the Seawall in Galveston. “It’s one of the most romantic dinner spots and great for date night,” says Lexi. For years, this has been a “go to” spot for the happy couple. On a particularly beautiful evening in early November, they were sitting at a special corner table at Gaido’s when “Emilio just leaped out of his chair and got on his knee and asked me to marry him,” says Lexi excitedly. The ring box even had a light in it. Was it the glow of the ring box, or Lexi’s glow that other diners noticed when they broke into applause and sent champagne to congratulate the couple? After dinner, the couple headed to the beach for pictures. Lexi found out later, Emilio’s original plan had been to ask for her hand in marriage during family Thanksgiving, but Emilio just couldn’t wait. “The whole family was supposed to do this as a team and then he ended up doing it intimately at Gaido’s, which was just as special,” she says.

BILLBOARD BRIDE Lexi has about a year to enjoy being engaged and plan her big day. Her wedding will be at Sacred Heart Church in Galveston and the reception will be at the San Luis Resort. An array of talented vendors from the Bridal Extravaganza Show put their creative genius together for this new and unique photo shoot. The design team at Holyoak Floral Designs, headed by Stacie Holyoak, added the perfect floral touches. “The boho chic look is definitely trending,” says Holyoak. “I’m trying to capture what mother nature has and bring the beauty to life in a different, meaningful way. ”A mixture of dry and fresh flowers creates an organic and natural vibe versus the traditional. “This look makes a statement for the brides who want to show their organic side,” she says. On the billboard, Lexi holds a light pink bouquet with purple accents created by the talented designers at H-E-B Blooms. Hair and makeup can create various looks. In this case, Mayra Malik of Simple Beauty Artistry knew braids would be a great addition. “Lexi has great hair to work with,” says Mayra. The setting at Blackberry Park is unique. “We are so excited to offer this new type of entertainment option to the Houston area,” says Lexi Snyder. Her team spent six months gathering items to enhance the aesthetic of the space. From silverware, to place settings and antique glassware; the venue staff

has lots of options. For this shoot, a macramé wall hanging was added as an additional focal point; baskets along with colorful rugs were incorporated throughout. Although the entire venue is actually outside, a ceremony site was set up right outside the tipi. Just before dusk, the light was simply perfect for Ivan Garcia of Ivan Garcia Studios. “Lexi is a natural; each pose better than the last,” he says. With the tipi wall as a backdrop, the floral arch and the individual vases, each holding a single flower, are highlighted perfectly. Benches take the place of pews leading to the altar.

0 Recently, I had the pleasure of designing a dessert table for a special event. The theme of this party was “Hawaii 5-0” so immediately you’d think there would be an all-tropical feel. I’m someone who loves rustic settings, so I decided to step out of the box and add some rustic décor to this tropical theme. I used metal crates that became table elevation, rustic dessert stands with a vintage feel and elegant trays with tropical palm leaves, complemented with vibrant colors, a unique balloon garland, tropical florals and a variety of sweet treats…this dessert table was a dream!

Wedding Location Amanda and Trip chose to have their wedding at The Adolphus Hotel, located in Dallas, Texas. Their final decision was based on the fact that the hotel has an on-site spa that offers complimentary day-of hair and makeup services! Something Amanda loved having. The Adolphus also supplied Amanda and Trip the ability to have their ceremony, reception, and all other accommodations in one place, making it easy, safe and fun for their guests! The couples wedding was described as ‘perfectly theirs!’ They played their favorite 2000’s pop punk hits all night long on the dance floor. As the night came to an end, guests received ribbon wands with bells to give the couple a noisy send-off.

About the Wedding The couple wanted a space that they could design to create their own unique wedding day with a connected outdoor space. They had it at the Asia Society in Houston. Here they had a half Jewish, half Catholic wedding ceremony, which allowed them to create the perfect combinations of culture to pave their own pathway. The couple wanted to be involved in making this special day their own, so they created some of the dĂŠcor and it was exactly what they wanted. They built their own ceremony backdrop which was a 10 ft by 8ft wooden structure filled with diamonds and 800 flowers they placed themselves. They also built four chandeliers and hung them in the space.

Proposal Story “I love her, I’m going to marry her.” These were the first words that Ricky said when he saw Leyla for the first time. After meeting through a mutual friend and jokingly celebrating their “one-year anniversary” on their first date, Leyla and Ricky began the adventure of their life time, they just did not know it yet! After a year and a half of dating the couple became engaged. Ricky surprised Leyla with “a journey down memory lane” through various iPad videos of family and friends. As Leyla reached the final destination, Nobu, she was led to the courtyard and found Ricky there with beautiful red rose petals all around. There was a hidden photographer for the proposal, and it was even live streamed for the couple’s friends and family, a lot of which live out of the country. The proposal was complete with a surprise party, surrounded with Leyla and Ricky’s closest family and friends.

Venue Despite not having any family in Dallas, both Leyla and Ricky knew they wanted to get married there. After all, it is where the couple met and where their relationship blossomed. When looking for a venue, the couple fell in love with Union Station, a historic building built in 1916. The downtown Dallas location was perfect for the couple who loved the dramatic settings, including tall ceilings and large windows, the whole place filled with character and charm. Another selling point for the couple on the venue was their exclusive caterer, Wolfgang Puck. They knew the food would be exquisite, no matter what.

Unique Details Ricky’s first time to see Leyla in her dress was along with everyone else, when the doors at Union Station opened up right before she walked down the aisle. The couple wanted their wedding to be two things, fun and cultural. Leyla and Ricky achieved this by having a huge dance party, along with Zaffer performers, a Lebanese tradition, stilt walkers and even carnival dancers for a Colombian tradition called “La Hora Loca”. The couple exchanged letters to each other on opposite sides of a wall about ten minutes prior to their wedding. Leyla’s letter included how she ended up in the dress she was wearing. Over a year before their wedding, Leyla had seen a gorgeous dress in a magazine while engagement ring shopping. While at her bridal appointment at the Bridal Boutique in Louisville, she showed the image of the gown to the sales woman, and to Leyla’s surprise they had the gown! After trying it on she knew it was the dress for her special day.

Wedding Standing under a beautiful floral arch, the couple got married by their longtime friend, and role model. A unique aspect to their wedding included personal vows with Ricky including how many times they had said “I love you” over a year.

Bride’s Advice

Make time together a priority. Life gets busy but know that there is always comfort alongside your spouse. Budget your time for consistent date nights. During this time, try and keep away from external distractions, like phones, when you are together. Always be willing to invest time in your marriage. Proposal Davina’s fairytale began when Yinka randomly asked her on a date. He picked her up and took her to their favorite bakery, Tiff’s Treats. Little did she know this was the start to one of the happiest days of her life. Next, they headed to the Japenese Garden, then the Bayou Bend Collection & Gardens where random photographers approached them for photos. Proposal After being offered to take a “work” trip two and a half years into their relationship, Teague and Melody took off to Paris the day after Christmas. The couple had spent a couple days in Paris and were getting ready for a nice dinner out when Teague brought Melody what she calls her “dressing drink” which is a glass of her favorite champagne. As Melody took a large sip, she noticed Teague staring at her and smiling more than normal. This is when she realized that something was going on, she looked down into her glass and noticed a beautiful, sparkly ring! She was so in shock she asked Teague what was in her glass about 50 times before he could even say anything. When Teague asked Melody to marry him, she of course said yes!

Wedding Location The couple chose to get married at Hughes Manor in Houston, Texas. Located inside the 610 “loop”, Hughes Manor provided the couple a location close to home, making it convenient for family and friends! Melody and Teague toured the venue and signed right away!

Honeymoon The Monday after their wedding, Melody and Teague left for the Bahamas. They experienced a mix of excursions and relaxing, plus they swam with pigs!

Gown info Melody says that finding her gown was almost as easy as finding the perfect venue! After trying on numerous gowns at the first store she looked at, she tried on one final gown. As she was looking in the mirror in this dress, she spotted another gown in the background. Melody then tried on the dress she had seen in the mirror and instantly fell in love and knew it was her gown!

Cake info The couple had not one, but three wedding cakes on their special day! Since Teague isn’t much of a sweet tooth, he decided to have a cheese station in place of his groom’s cake. Melody decided on having a chocolate cake with Nutella icing, a white chocolate with raspberry, and lastly a carrot cake with cream cheese icing! Each cake had a different texture and some included gold foiling and painting.

Unique Details The couple had a Cheeto Bar at their wedding, equipped with three types of Cheetos and of course wet wipes for all the orange fingers! Another detail the couple incorporated into their wedding was favors for the kids! There was a table for them with ring pops, coloring books, glow sticks, and each kid had a personalized cup with their name on it!

Bride’s Advice While it sounds cliché, my advice is to trust your vendors. Seriously, TRUST THEM! They are professionals and know what they’re doing. There were many times when I would get caught up in my head and question the vendors. I would freak out that they wouldn’t know how to do something but then people would quickly remind me, that’s their job. I think I finally let go and just put my trust in them the day of but I wish I would have done it sooner to help myself alleviate stress leading up to the day.

Proposal Using a friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s birthday party as a cover, Kory was able to get Tara to help him set up her own proposal. Kory asked Tara to accompany him to the rooftop of Hotel Settles to set up decorations. Once they made it to the top Tara saw nothing to be set up for a party, instead she found Kory holding her hand and telling her how much he loved her. Classic Inspiration “We wanted a beautiful, masculine, yet elegant feel for this wedding, so everything was created custom for us. Kirksey Gregg Productions took the reins and brought our vision to life. LBL Event Rentals created all of the custom linens and that unique design is now known as the Rexberry Wedding linen. Because we were both 20-somethings in the 80s, we hand-selected every song for the playlist; we wanted a mix of disco (because we met at a disco party) and all 80s dance music. The photo booth featured a classic silver sequin backdrop and used only black and white film, to give all the photos a timeless look.”

your Houston wedding related pandemic problems.

MicroWeddings! You might not have known that these types of weddings even existed. When you think of weddings, you might think of the biggest venue filled wall to wall with people, some you might not know. With micro weddings, you won’t have to worry about that, and here is why. A micro wedding is a smaller than normal size wedding that contains 20-50 guests. This guest list usually consists of the immediate family and close friends. Think of it as a combination of an elopement and a big, traditional wedding. Oftentimes the ceremony is effortless, and the reception is not as hectic because there won’t be an overwhelming number of people there. This environment is perfect when you are taking safety precautions during a pandemic, and it has many more benefits than expected. There’s no need to panic when a micro wedding might be exactly what you were looking for the whole time. - 111 -

Moreover, micro weddings allow more options to become available. It makes the planning not only manageable but flexible. You want to get married and suddenly a pandemic hits, and you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what to do. The GREAT news is that you have more than one option to choose from. Other than elopement and micro weddings, you could do a SEQUEL WEDDING! - 115 -

A sequel wedding is simply more than one wedding ceremony, where the first wedding is smaller, and the second ceremony is as grand as youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like. Usually these weddings occur when a couple does not want to wait to get married. Also, they would have to postpone the larger ceremony because of things like finances or cancellations. In this case a global pandemic! Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be surprised at how many couples (especially celebrity couples) are doing sequel weddings now. A sequel is the perfect name to describe a wedding like this. The first ceremony is usually very small and intimate, almost like a minimony, which is just a mini ceremony between yourselves and/or your families. This ceremony can be held in inexpensive places like your backyard, courthouse, or a very small and a local venue. Your second ceremony is the bigger celebration, usually held at the more extravagant venue. Although this might not be your ideal plans for the way you want your wedding to go, sequel weddings can be helpful in more ways than one.

If you don’t like the bar scene, the acoustically constructed Listening Lounge plays curated music and podcasts on specific Memphis music styles. The speakers are so good, it’s as though you are hearing the music live.
