From intimate beaches to full-on resort experiences, the Dominican Republic has all you need to make your wedding a special one

W W

hether the wedding of your dreams is a lavish affair with a long guest list and an extensive itinerary, or a nofuss intimate affair in a picturesque setting, the Dominican Republic has what it takes to be the perfect destination. With hundreds of hotels at price points ranging from affordable to seven-star luxury, and many new properties opening each year, there’s fierce competition to woo visitors. For a couple planning a wedding or honeymoon, the biggest challenge is choosing the ideal venue. “The services for destination weddings are exceptional across the Dominican Republic,” says Abdalah Castillo, Toronto-based Chair of the Dominican Republic Tourism Board. “Whether you want a high-end hotel or a more modest wedding, there’s something for everybody.” The tropical flavour, the beat of merengue and bachata music (both of which originated in the DR) and the hospitable national spirit can be found everywhere on the Caribbean island. But with a wide array of historic sites, beautiful beaches, ecotourism adventures and culinary experiences available in several key hubs, you can match your needs with the perfect spot. To start, PUNTA CANA, the Caribbean’s most popular tourism destination, works well for larger weddings. It’s known for being family friendly (keeping the nieces, nephews and grandparents happy) and has all sizes of properties including sprawling resorts with enough activities to keep everyone busy. PUERTO PLATA, the cultural capital of the country’s north, is known for its affordability, its lively town, where it’s easy to meet the locals and the many nature-focused excursions that are available (including hiking to 28 waterfalls). SAMANÁ, with its many high-end adult-only boutique hotels, has become a desired spot for more secluded, more private weddings close to nature. Not far from the gorgeous Haitises National Park, Samaná is known for its lush green beauty and as an incomparable eco-retreat. Beaches here range from private – the size of your living room – to broad expanses of Caribbean sand. ROMANA is a higher-end destination where villa rentals are popular. Villas can provide wedding parties with a private, central hub for preparations and socializing, while the golfing in the Romana area is among the best in the world. Across the country, strict limits on building heights – no higher than a palm tree in the coastal regions – and on the density of development ensure that the scenic beauty you want in your wedding photos is well preserved.

For couples who dream of unique and fairy tale weddings and honeymoons, the Dominican Republic is a slice of paradise that blends a tropical ambiance with old-world charm and romance. Find your inspiration and visit www.godominicanrepublic.com or call your preferred travel agent.

ost hotels in the DR have wedding planners or wedding coordinators who can work with the couple or their Canadian wedding planner to perfectly execute every step, from arrival to ceremony to honeymoon and departure. As well, many properties offer spa services that are perfect for bonding moments among the bridal party or getting relaxed for the big day. Because of high demand in Punta Cana, the government has provided additional judges so visiting couples, as well as locals, can more easily find someone to officiate their special day. “Marriages in the Dominican Republic are recognized in Canada, even if they take place by a waterfall or on a mountain side,” says Castillo. Large investments in the country’s infrastructure, including eight international airports across the island, have focused on improving the visitor experience, so visitors spend more time enjoying the sun and the hospitality and less time in transit. In Puerto Plata, the whole town has been recently renovated, and now has an amphitheatre where visitors can take in a performance and maybe hear some merengue and bachata. What used to be a four-hour drive from the capital Santo Domingo to Punta Cana now takes one and a half hours, and driving distances from other destinations are also dropping. Historic Santo Domingo, with a population of almost a million people, is definitely worth the trip. “If you get tired of the sun, you can always do a day tour to the city,” says Castillo. Founded in 1496, just four years after Columbus’s journey across the Atlantic, the UNESCO World Heritage site is considered the First City of America with the first cathedral, hospital, customs house and university on the continent. But with its impressive culinary and nightlife scene, it’s not just for history buffs. “It’s a vibrant city, especially the old town, with museums, colonial buildings, art galleries, bars and restaurants,” says Castillo. “The shopping is also very good.” That’s always good news for someone who forgot an essential item back in Canada. Santo Domingo is also a great place to try traditional Dominican dishes, which often mix Middle Eastern, Spanish and African influences, as well as contemporary international gastronomy from top chefs. Castillo says he’s noticed a trend toward smaller, more engaged weddings, where the bridal party and the guests partake in more group activities, rather than gathering solely for official events. Whether it’s going to a concert at a venue like Altos de Chavón (a replica 16th century Mediterranean village), going on a hiking to El Limón waterfall near Samaná or golfing together on some of the world’s best courses, the range of possibilities for a wedding party is unparalleled.

And now, a few choice

Words… EDITOR’S PICK

Congratulations, not only are you planning a fabulous ceremony to celebrate your big day but you’re choosing a fun-filled getaway, too. No doubt, it will be a fantasy come true and, while all this planning is a labour of love, have you stopped to think about what your lives will be like once you’re back from your exotic trip? I hope yours is a life of fun, freedom and fulfillment and a relationship kept fresh by choosing never to accept the one true F-word…..fine. Why settle for fine when you can have fresh and forever. Think about how carefully you’re planning your getaway – doesn’t your new relationship deserve the same focus? (Now there’s a good F-word.) It all starts with frank discussion, fearless honesty and a focus on growing together. There are some amazing, and fun, tools that can help you both explore the topics that make many of us squirm – like finance and family – and, while they might not sound as exciting as a vacation in paradise, they can bring some pretty fenomenal (ok, so I cheated that one) insights. When things in your life are merely fine, that means they aren’t bringing you the joy and fulfillment you desire. Often, we tolerate fine because it’s easy or seems less painful than exploring what we truly want, why we want it, or what we have to do to change what it is we’re tolerating right now. Fear has no place in your new life, so think about what it would take for you to have fabulous for yourself and each other. Bon voyage, and here’s to a lifetime of fulfillment, friendship and love.

SOMETHING NEW A circle is the symbol of eternity (hence wedding bands). You can put your own spin on an old standard, complementing your overall look and adding uniqueness to your special day with a Susanna Russo bespoke wedding band. SPECIAL FEATURE

SOMETHING NEW Choose Mexico for your honeymoon and discover something new about the country you thought you knew.

W

hen it comes to picking a destination for your honeymoon, Mexico’s pristine beaches and lively culture make it an obvious choice. But if you think you’ve seen all there is to see in this wondrously diverse country, think again. From the Atlantic coast to the Pacific, the Mexican landscape offers charming colonial towns, cosmopolitan cities, awe-inspiring nature, and utopian beaches. Here are some of the country’s most iconic locations that will make your honeymoon a time to remember.

SOMETHING WONDROUS

When you visit Mexico, you will have the chance to get up close and personal with the stunning landscapes of the Mexican countryside. But there is nothing like seeing it from the quiet tranquility of a hot air balloon. With the gentle wind guiding your path, hot air balloon tours offer an unforgettable experience that is simultaneously peaceful, romantic, and exhilarating. Choose from several equally breathtaking areas. In Huasca de Ocampo, Hidalgo, see the Basaltic Prisms and the Mountain Corridor; the turquoise bays of Acapulco; the sprawling greenery of Tequisquiapan, Querétaro; and in Teotihuacán, the Sun and Moon Pyramids, which are more than 500 metres high. And every year in León, the International Balloon Festival is held in midNovember, gathering more than 200 hot-air balloons that dot the sky with amazing shapes and colours.

SPECIAL FEATURE

SOMETHING MAGNIFICENT

When winter arrives in the west coast’s Baja California Sur and Nayarit, it brings with it an astonishing natural wonder to behold. Hundreds of gray whales migrate over 10,000 miles from their summer home in the Arctic to coastal lagoons on the Baja peninsula. During their months-long stay, they will use the warm, shallow waters to birth calves, while giving you a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience them. Some of the best places to see these magnificent creatures are in Reserva de la Biósfera del Vizcaíno, Los Cabos, and La Paz in Baja California Norte, in addition to Sayulita and Rincon de Guayabitos in Nayarit, with ideal idyllic beaches to enjoy whale watching and practice deep diving.

SOMETHING SUNNY

You can’t visit Mexico without spending time on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Feel enriched and relaxed while swimming and lying on the sun all day. Watching the sunset over the ocean is the quintessential honeymoon experience for every couple, and there is no shortage of options here. Oaxaca has beaches surrounded only by calm lagoons inhabited by ducks and birds. Mazunte, one of the most unspoiled and popular beaches, offers convenient guesthouses. Chacala is located in Nayarit, a perfect place to stroll in the jungle and surf. The renowned Todos Santos is located to the south of the Baja California peninsula and is one of the best surfing beaches in Mexico. For some of the most romantic beach experiences check out: the Michigan beach, in Guerrero, offering amazing starry evenings; El Madresal, in Chiapas, one of the best beaches along the Pacific Ocean to watch sunsets; Peña Hermosa Beach, in Veracruz, with long horseback rides, and Celestún in Yucatán, famous for the huge colonies of pink flamingoes that call the five-kilometre long beach home. However you choose to celebrate this new chapter in your lives together, there is always something new to experience in Mexico!

ST YLE

SOLE MATTERS It is your first dance and all eyes are on you, but mostly on your shoes while you glide across the dance floor with your loved one.

Fancy footwork or not, your shoes make a statement and are often the first impression as guests look you down-to-up.

Ryan McCann chats with Peter Feeney, a bespoke shoemaker from Toronto who shares with us why selecting the ultimate pair of soles when marrying your soulmate is just as important as saying “I do.” WHY DO SHOES MATTER? You spend so much time and effort selecting the elements and details to create your special day. Shoes should not be overlooked and they deserve your special attention. WHERE DID YOUR LOVE FOR SHOES BEGIN AND WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR MEN AND THEIR SHOES? I studied and apprenticed in Florence, Italy, where shoes were everything, where an outfit starts with the shoes. For us, shoes are the most important detail. A one-of-a-kind pair of custom bespoke shoes would truly be the piéce de résistance. Men need to consider shape, style, fit, colour and construction when considering a shoe to compliment their look. Remember, it is about making a good impression on the in-laws and the beautiful person you are about to marry. WHY DO YOU THINK FOOTWEAR IS OVERLOOKED, ESPECIALLY LEADING UP TO THE SPECIAL DAY? It is not that often you really need to consider what you are wearing on your feet and how it is going to complement your overall look. Men do not spend a lot of time shopping for the perfect shoe. We probably spend our “shoe shopping time,” looking for replacements for the shoe that has the annoying hole in the sole or new pair of specific use like cycling or jogging. Not many of us have a shoe collection and certainly not something for the big day.

PETER FEENEY,

a Toronto based bespoke shoemaker, ditched a film career to craft works of art for the feet. www.peterfeeney.com @peterfeeney_footwear

WHY CUSTOMIZED SHOES AND WHAT MAKES THEM EXTRA SPECIAL ON YOUR SPECIAL DAY? Having a pair of shoes crafted for you is truly a unique experience. Much like a suit, you’ll have input in every element possible starting with the silhouette and overall shape of the shoe, style, colour – even the degree of shine or polish. I recommend a hand-dyed patina. Different colours of dye are selected to best suit the colour of the shoe and applied by hand to antique and accentuate design or completely transform the leather to achieve depth and a blend of colour truly unique like every client we have. SHARE WITH US THE PROCESS IN CREATING A CUSTOMIZED PAIR OF SHOES? In three simple consultations, we can create the shoe that will make your suit pop and help carry you into your future. Based on a series of measurements, we create a customized form specifically for you, shaped just the way you want it. Then we create a fitting sample to ensure the fit and design are correct. Once this is correct we move forward in the construction of your shoe.

WELLNESS

What to ask before hiring someone to (lovingly) kick your butt into shape It usually takes a monumental life event like a wedding to get people motivated into shape. Planning a wedding coincides with planning a fitness journey for life. Equinox’s Kris Salzmann shares his tips to help you get your best body ever for your special day and keeping it in-check for the rest of your life. By RYAN MCCANN I only have 30 minutes to work-out, is that enough time for gaining results? Keep calm and get your workout on! When I am in a time crunch I follow this template:

1) DYNAMIC WARM-UP (5-10 MINS.) Ditch the treadmill warmup, and get your body moving in the 3 dimensions it was designed for! Choose full body dynamic movements that challenge your body to explore joint ranges of motion it rarely has the chance to express. This, as well as some reactive core training drills as part of a warmup will truly prime your body to get the most out of the workout ahead.

2) RESISTANCE TRAINING CIRCUIT (10-15 MINS.) Pick 2 lower body exercises (knee + hip dominant), 2 upper body (push+pull) and one core exercise. Using these 5 exercises complete 12-15 reps per set for 3-5 sets. Give yourself 30-60 secs. rest only in-between rounds.

3) ENERGY SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT (10 MINS.) This is where I like to hop on a bike or a rower for high intensity intervals with active rest. In the 10 mins. allotted, 5 two min. intervals will be completed. 1:40 will be spent rowing or biking at a moderate intensity (active rest portion) and for the final 20 secs. of the interval intensity should elevate to almost everything you’ve got! To increase difficulty shift time from active rest into the high intensity interval.

24 yes i do

What’s the best way to prepare for the first session? It all starts with a good night’s sleep allowing the body to be fully regenerated for the workout ahead. There are two options to consider for pre-workout nutrition: A: A larger well-balanced meal 1-2 hrs. before the workout. B: A smaller meal within 60 mins. of the workout usually in the form of a shake or smoothie allowing yourself enough time to digest.

I am not ready to divorce the carbs for a marriage. Should I eat protein or carbs after my workout? You should eat proteins and carbs... and fats! Postworkout protein is crucial for stimulating protein synthesis and halting protein breakdown, both necessary for enhanced recovery, adaptation and performance in time for your next workout. Carbohydrate consumption post-workout is important to restore intra-muscular glycogen (an additional energy resource used during exercise), as well as elevate insulin, which itself positively increases protein synthesis. Healthy fats should also have their place in your shake or on your plate. Studies have shown that when fat is present in the post-workout meal, there is an increased utilization of available amino acids for protein synthesis.

SAYING “I DO” AWAY FROM HOME

From Maui to Mexico, Italy to Saint Lucia, our expert Shannon Blackburn specializes in flawless events for couples miles from home. Here, the tips to consider for throwing a next-level bash anywhere in the world.

Congratulations!

You’re engaged!

Now the decision. Do you have a local wedding with all of your friends and family and much more or do you have a destination wedding with only your close friends and family that mean so much to you? One of the biggest decisions a couple will make together is planning their wedding. Thousands of couples choose destination weddings every year and the advantages of having a destination wedding are numerous:

1

2

3

Combination of the celebration and vacation with family and friends.

Time-saving and hassle free: you do minimal planning.

Cost effective: Destination weddings generally cost less than traditional weddings!

My first recommendation would be to start working with a Specialized Destination Wedding advisor right away, if you wish to consider a destination wedding.

26 yes i do

HERE IS WHY With planning a destination wedding, a common question many couples will ask, how do we pick a perfect resort that all our family and friends will enjoy. Couples are looking to give their guests exciting, memorable, unique experiences and with most guests paying for their own travel arrangements, the couple needs to consider their guests. There’s a resort for every couple and their guests and during the consultation with a Specialized Destination Wedding Planner, questions they will be asked: Who are your guests? Are children invited? Or will it only be an adult-only celebration? This will determine and narrow down the type of resort that will be perfect for your destination wedding. If the couple is inviting families, a Destination Wedding Specialist will make sure the resort can accommodate cribs, babysitting services and resorts that offer baby clubs and be family friendly. What are your guests’ ages? A resort without an elevator and with many floors will not be the best for older adults or families with small children – or for individuals like me who forget everything in the room.

START PLANNING

DINING OPTIONS Dining options, another important item the couple needs to consider for their guests. When staying at a resort for a week, options for a variety of food choices are a common question. Everyone wants choices and a resort that can accommodate the dietary needs of your guests.

MONEY TALK The next step is figuring out your budget, which is admittedly the least fun part of the entire process. Putting a cap on what you’re willing to spend in the early stages will really help you out later on in the planning process, even if that cap is negotiable. Are your parents involved, or your fiancé’s parents? Are you funding this entirely by yourselves, or are you sharing the bills? Who is paying for what, specifically? Getting all this out of the way early is always a good idea. Now is also the time to decide if you want to hire a wedding planner. This is something many engaged couples debate about. Wedding planners can be considered expensive, but they can also save the day if you run into any kind of emergency or conflict on your way to the altar. If you do decide you want a wedding planner helping you along, get one now, before you hire anybody else, and especially before you pay for anything. A wedding planner may have connections to some of the vendors you’re interested in. When planning the perfect destination wedding, we have a system to make things as easy as possible. Here are the steps to get started.

1

Decide on possible locations to get married, possible dates, and have a rough idea of number of guests, decide if children will be invited, decide on budget per guest (for hotel, resort, transfer package), decide on overall wedding budget.

2

First consultation so we can help you narrow down your location/resorts based on priorities and budget.

3

We can now go ahead and get your group quotes from our top suppliers.

4

Settle on one resort that will be perfect for you and your guests.

5

Settle on wedding ceremony/reception location and we will check on availability on desired dates. (Some countries require a residency for a certain amount of hours before you get married. We will inform you of this.)

6

Sign the Wedding Planning contract and decide on payment schedule.

7

Send out the invitations to guests with the deposit amount, final payment date and details about the resort.

8

Relax, while guests start calling us to secure their room/ flight by putting down a small deposit. (We will send you an updated guest list to keep you informed

9

Relax, enjoy and let us handle all the details that arise as well as handle your guest requests, payments and anything else they may need. We always suggest to book one year in advance.

There you have it. No matter what the couple chooses, go into your wedding knowing that you and your partner’s individuality will make your special day as unique as can be.

W

hat was once known as Indochina (including Laos, modernday Myanmar and parts of Malaysia) is today one of the continent’s most densely thrilling travel experiences. While, geographically, they may not cover much distance, the triple threat of Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam offer some of Asia’s most unique cityscapes, ancient relics and natural wonders. Each possesses its own unique charms, its own brand of hospitality, and it own reason for being your new favourite destination. Over two weeks, we have a jam-packed trek from the ethereal landmarks of Cambodia through the unusual history of Ho Chi Minh City and capped off with the unparalleled buzz of Bangkok!

ANGKOR WHAT?! Nothing can prepare you for the majesty and marvelousness of Cambodia’s Angkor, including its most famous temples, Angkor Wat and Bayon. Located within the royal city of Angkor Thom, the Angkor Wat complex is the largest religious monument in the world, understandably making it a great source of Cambodian pride. The 400-acre collection of Khmer-style temples was built by Khmer King Suryavarman II in the 12th century, for the god Vishnu. Make sure your camera battery is fully charged as you won’t want to miss any of the ornate sandstone structures, including lotus-shaped towers, ogival arches and the cruciform terrace. Next, we visit the magnificent Bayon—which never fails to inspire awe—nearby. Surrounded by lush Cambodian jungle, the site is comprised of 54 intricately carved towers in one single temple. The last temple to be built in Angkor, 216 serene stone faces adorn its walls. Adding to the wonder are the playful monkeys that swing from the trees to the temples with joyful abandon.

42 yes i do

DON’T MISS SAIGON Far from the peaceful artefacts of Cambodia is the crackling energy of Vietnam’s biggest urban centre, Ho Chi Minh City. Known as Saigon before it fell to the Viet Cong, today both names are used almost interchangeably by its more than eight million residents. Within the crumbling French Colonial architecture, you can still find signs for “pharmacies” hiding beneath decades of grime. Whizzing motorbikes that at first seem impossibly intimidating to navigate, quickly become a live-action version of Frogger. It’s a metropolis in which history buffs, foodies and architecture lovers alike are sure to find delight! The city’s central district makes hitting up some of the most fascinating spots easy to do by foot. The vibrant yellow Saigon Central Post Office, beaming in the sunshine, is a wonder of 19thcentury French Colonial architecture, designed by none other than Gustave Eiffel…yes, that Eiffel. Steps away is the equally impressive, and seemingly out of place, Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica de Saigon, with its two bell towers reaching 58 metres into the air. And the Reunification Palace’s perfectly preserved 1970s furnishings alone are worth the visit! With all that walking, you’re bound to get hungry. But with Vietnam’s deceptively simple dishes, there is no reason to stay that way. Banh mi is the perfect grab-it-and-go fuel. A byproduct of the country’s colonial past, it combines a crisp French baguette loaded with Vietnamese ingredients, including pickled carrots, refreshing cucumber and daikon. Forget what you think you know about pho, the ubiquitous Vietnamese soup. In its homeland, the broth and noodles reveal a complexity unlikely to be matched anywhere else. And the Ben Thanh market is the bustling centre of Saigon’s food scene, where you can stock up on aromatic fruits and the country’s signature strong coffee.

GO OUT WITH A BANGKOK Wait until you get a load of whirring, sensational Bangkok—an unforgettable final stop! At its centre is the lifeblood of the city: the Chao Phraya River. For centuries, its banks have provided the necessities of life for the Thai people, from fishing to transportation to communication channels. And today it is an integral part of festivals and the city experience. It’s also the reason behind Bangkok’s nickname: the Venice of the East! We hop on an elegant longtail boat, known locally as ruea hang yao, to float down the city’s intricate network of canals or khlongs. They provide a glimpse into daily life in Thailand, including fishing boats, vendors and local children cannonballing into the water. The canals also connect us to the some of the city’s key sites. Not the least of which is the stately Grand Palace, right on the river’s shore. Built in 1782, the palace was the official residence of the king until 1932 and is used for official ceremonies today. Spanning more than two million square feet, it’s a lavish display of golden spires, courts and pavilions. But the palace houses something even more impressive: the Wat Phra Kaew. Considered the most sacred temple in Thailand, it’s home to the mysterious Emerald Buddha sculpture, one of Thailand’s most venerated images. Perched on its ornate pedestal, the 15th-century sculpture is only 26 inches tall and is actually made of jade or jasper, (the emerald of its name refers to its colour.) Its origin the stuff of legends, it continues to glow and shimmer, awaiting new guests to dazzle.

From the sparkling turquoise water of the Andaman Sea to the verdant tea plantations and the undulating forest-covered hills of the country’s interior, Thailand’s scenery provides the perfect backdrop for beautiful dreamers. he scene is bathed in candlelight. The soundtrack, gently rolling waves lapping at a beach’s edge, or a fair breeze moving through a leafy jungle. The scent of jasmine and frangipani infuse the air. Colourful silks as far as the eye can see. Elephants trumpet in the distance. Smiling faces, laughter, joy. And you. This is Thailand, where a couple’s every wish for a romantic getaway can be fulfilled. In Thailand, it goes beyond even the details. The best kept secret places to get away from it all allow for romantic bonding, a focus on each other for each other, at the height of luxury that comes naturally. We seek connection, of togetherness, and with it we hope for a little magic. Of course, we know Bangkok and Phuket and Koh Samui, and we know that there really is a little magic in these places. But the true romantics are also seeking somewhere less-travelled, more private and intimate to conjure joy.

FALL IN LOVE The area of Trang, in Krabi, is a nature-lover’s paradise. Waterfalls spill into pools, and hide secluded caves, offering a sultry escape from the crowds and the heat. A dip here soothes the soul and ignites a passion for wildlife. The elusive Dugong swims in the waters of the two marine national parks, but these shy cousins of the Manatee are not the only ones who take to the crystal-clear depths: Trang is also known for its underwater wedding ceremonies.

DIVE IN For those who find the siren call of the sea irresistible, the Similan Islands beckon. Known as a diver’s paradise this archipelago – 11 islands in all – dots the Andaman sea from above but, below, it conceals some of the most revered reefs in Southeast Asia. Snorkelers revel in the abundance of coral in the shallows, while scuba divers head to Richelieu Rock, a protected area of Muk Koh National Park where the waters are teeming with aquatic life.

VENTURE INTO NATURE Welcome to the jungle. The jungles of Khao Sok, Surat Thani, however, envelop you in lush landscapes, alive with some of the most unique flora and fauna on the planet. The earth’s largest and rarest flowers thrive here, hothouse blooms that inspire romance to blossom. Ride elephants on safari, paddle a canoe on the Sok River and try to spot tigers in their natural habitat. Birds of a feather. The frisson of the wild.

ISLAND IDYLL At the southeastern edge of Thailand, hugging the borders of Cambodia, is the province of Trat. Off the coast, ocean lovers will find a group of nearly 60 islands peppering the sparkling surface of the Gulf of Thailand. This archipelago is home to Mu Ko Chang National Park encompassing many of the islands, including Ko Chang, the largest, rich with the allure of lush jungles and tumbling waterfalls. Its coral reefs are an underwater enthusiast’s dream, while the mystique of houses on stilts in the village of Bang Bao enliven the imagination.

LUXE LIFE: HUA HIN The most luxurious of all things is time. Time together, time to connect, time to ignite romance and passion. In Hua Hin, time is on your side. All the details are taken care of; hotels and resorts are the ultimate indulgence. Consider it the country’s riviera, where the Thai Royal family has their vacation home; a place where the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit’s now-legendary love story flourished into one of the greatest romances of the past century. Privacy is held at its highest, intimacy encouraged and pampering is a must.

“WITHOUT A MOMENT’S HESITATION,

my personal concierge changes direction to join me on my walk”

I

press a button on the grey stone wall beside the pool and, to my surprise, water jets erupt to massage my legs. On another wall, I press a button and, surprise again, cushions of tickly bubbles percolate up from the submerged chaise lounge chair I’m lying/floating on. Relaxing and diverting on its own, the seven-step journey through the hydrotherapy pool at Grand Velas Los Cabos is even more fun when you have someone with you to speculate on what the next button will trigger and how good it’s going to feel. The huge spa at this shiny new hotel is certainly an otherworldly treat; the hydrotherapy pool, the treatment rooms and even the invigoratingly icy cold room are all designed to transport visitors from their everyday cares and worries. The Pacific sun, shining as we take a step outside the spa, reminds us what kind of earthly paradise the place is. Located on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific, the region is known for its rocky, cactus-covered terrain and its clear, star-filled skies. Launched last December, the US$150-million resort is a truly Baja celebration of its beachfront location, the dreamy landscape, contemporary Mexican design and cuisine and other pampering pleasures. The elegant curve of the resort’s facade, pink and green foliage bursting from the balconies of its 304 rooms, directs all attention to the blue-hued horizon. The fifth resort to be established by Juan and Eduardo Vela Ruiz, brothers originally from Tampico, Tamaulipas, on Mexico’s Gulf Coast, Grand Velas Los Cabos perfects the approach

that won them so much acclaim for their Riviera Maya resort, which opened in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in 2008. Not only does the all-inclusive brand eschew the generic food, paucity of service and lack of thoughtful design that can characterize some all-inclusive experiences, the brand set out to make these offerings their strengths. The look, feel and taste of the place – with interiors from heavy hitting designers, including Eduardo Vela Ruiz himself – is all elegantly aligned, from the brilliantly turquoise tile in Frida restaurant to the groovy lounge vibe of Koi bar. Located mid-way on the coastal corridor between artsy San Jose del Cabo and party town Cabo San Lucas, the resort is as well situated as it is well appointed. (“Los Cabos” usually describes the two towns and the surrounding areas, though you’ll hear Americans lazily melt it all down to just “Cabo,” which simply means “Cape.”) After Hurricane Odile battered the region in 2014, the destination was forced to reinvent itself. It has done so with enthusiasm, imagination and a decidedly upscale sensibility. Currently the fastest growing region in Mexico, Los Cabos has 16,000 hotel rooms and 4,000 on the way. Obviously, the deserty romance of the place drives much of the renewal; the destination is hosting the Annual Destination Wedding Planners Congress next year, drawing more than 600 of the wedding world’s elite from more than 65 countries. The Grand Velas has led the way in making Los Cabos a wedding mecca. The hotel’s dedicated Wedding Showroom, infinitely photographable spaces (the vast Terraza del Mar, overlooking the Sea of Cortes, can accommodate 600 people) and the team’s focus on getting all the details exactly right – along with novel offerings like drone filming – make it easy for a couple to celebrate their nuptials their own way.

THE BEST OF LOS CABOS Grand Velas Los Cabos grabbed headlines earlier this year when it announced its US$25,000 taco. With langoustine, Kobe beef, Almas Beluga caviar and black truffle brie cheese on a gold flakeinfused corn tortilla, the taco treat is the ultimate romantic gesture. A portion of the cost goes toward a local children’s charity. On Thursday evening, head to San Jose del Cabo’s weekly Art Walk in the town’s charming gallery district. Stop by Drift San José’s Mezcal Tasting Bar for a smart drink with Los Cabos’s young seeand-be-seen crowd. driftsanjose.com In Cabo San Lucas, Visit Cabo Adventures to book a sunset sail or, for couples who love swimming, a snorkeling adventure tour. cabo-adventures.com

O

n arrival, the first thing I notice – besides the dramatic three-storey lobby that shows off the ocean view from the minute my ride pulls up – is the service, which perfectly balances professionalism with genuine big-hearted friendliness. With a staff ratio of three to one, no question or desire goes unanswered for long. Heading to the pool one afternoon, I pass Oswaldo, the personal concierge for my floor. Without a moment’s hesitation, he changes direction to join me on my walk and, after asking about the previous day’s activities, makes some suggestions for the evening. By the time we part, I have a dinner reservation, an after-dinner plan and the confidence that my room will be made up before my time in the sun is over. Poolside, I regularly fail to make it to the bottom of my cocktail before I’m offered a new one, each made according to my earlier request. Nothing is forgotten here. The resort’s five fine-dining restaurants are attractions in their own right, with guests from other hotels dropping by to explore the menus. Cocina de Autor, helmed by Michelin-starred chef Sidney Schutte from the Netherlands, is already famous for its playful molecular tasting menu (think red snapper topped with oyster, Iberian ham and lychee foam), while Velas 10 attracts more traditional taste buds with seafood and steak classics. Then again – especially for those who might be coming down to earth after intense wedding celebrations – the 24-hour room service menu makes it mighty easy to stay in the room. The views, and likely the company, will be stunning. All-inclusive rooms for two people from CAD$1,500. loscabos.grandvelas.com

Shoot for the MOON Move beyond the clichéd all-inclusive honeymoon vacations and enjoy a different kind of couples’ retreat. By Rebecca Cohen

T

here’s more to your honeymoon than hiding away in an all-inclusive resort sipping cocktails. Your romantic escape is the chance to take the trip of a lifetime or an epic adventure. It’s also about trying new experiences together as a new couple. When planning your honeymoon, why not break a few rules and opt out for more a unorthodox approach? There is plenty to see out there and, according to Booking.com, these off the beaten track romantic destinations will fulfil all your honeymoon criteria, whether your passion is culture, food or just relaxing on the beach.

Udaipur, India FOR THE GLOBETROTTERS Udaipur is often said to be India’s most romantic city, perhaps even the world’s. Right at its heart lies the glassy blue surface of Lake Pichola, a man-made lake that lends the city an ethereal and peaceful presence. Perched in the middle is the Lake Palace and on one side, City Palace; both grand and beguiling structures. Take a romantic boat trip across the lake and admire the beamingly bright saris of the women washing clothes on the ghats. Then enjoy a rooftop dinner with a backdrop of glittering lights reflected on the water.

DREAM HONEYMOONS

Barichara, Colombia FOR ARCHITECTURE LOVERS Known as the prettiest little town in northeastern Colombia, Barichara is cherished as a historical relic. Well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture and a mellow mood are the main attractions. Hilly, cobbled streets are lined with trees and flowers, while buildings feature clay-tiled roofs and whitewashed walls from some 300 years ago. It’s no wonder that many Spanish-language films and telenovelas are shot here because of its natural beauty ... Don’t miss the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception blending into the warmcoloured landscape in all its ochre splendour.

Palm Cove, Australia FOR SUN-SEEKERS A peaceful alternative to the better-known Port Douglas, Palm Cove is blissfully romantic. Pick a secluded spot on the long, white sandy beach and watch the sun set over the calm waters with the sounds of the rainforest behind you. For honeymooners willing to venture out of their paradise cocoon, visiting the nearby Great Barrier Reef is a once-in-alifetime experience.

Akaroa, New Zealand FOR ADVENTURERS This little sheltered harbour town on the Banks Peninsula is a fine example of the kind of breath-taking rugged scenery New Zealand is known for. In contrast to its dramatic volcanic surroundings, the town itself has a sleepy and distinctly Gallic feel thanks to its history as a French settlement. Swimming with local dolphins is a popular attraction but just sitting on the rickety wooden pier to take in the sweeping views and serenity is honeymoon-worthy.

Collioure, France FOR CLASSIC COUPLES What could be more romantic than a provincial fishing village that has inspired the likes of Henri Matisse? Collioure is like the Cote d’Azur before it became a tourist trap. Rolling hills of vineyards slope down to this charming town, centred around a tiny bay complete with waterfront castle and church. Perfect for lovers’ strolls along the pebbly beach and through the local market to pick up some local produce.

Třeboň, Czech Republic FOR NATURE LOVERS An enchanting town of Renaissance and Baroque houses in South Bohemia, it’s surprising that Třeboň isn’t really on the international tourist radar. An area of great natural beauty, the landscape is perfect for romantic walks, dotted with lakes and wetlands that are home to a variety of flora and fauna. The town’s castle lends the place a fairy-tale setting, along with the cobbled main square lined with pastel-coloured houses boasting Baroque facades.

Delft, Holland URBAN DETOXERS The historic, dainty town of Delft is disarmingly pretty. Known as the hometown of Vermeer and for its own distinctive blue and white porcelain, it’s also ideal for a tranquil and romantic city break. Stroll through its intimate and infinitely attractive leafy canals and over picture-perfect old stone bridges.

Monsaraz, Portugal FOR HUNGRY HISTORIANS The hilltop village of Monsaraz has spectacular panoramic views out over the Alentejo region. Good food is fundamentally important here, so expect many delicious, rustic meals like migas com bacalhau e coentros (codfish with bread and coriander), with some of the area’s abundant fine wines. Best enjoyed while gazing out over the olive groves, vineyards and rolling green hills.

REAL HONEYMOONS

Timothy and Ryan

SOUTH AFRICA

“S

outh Africa was the perfect backdrop for our honeymoon as it has all the key elements of what we often look for in a holiday. A combination of wildlife, culture, food and wine, history and city activities.” say Timothy and Ryan. So in search of a relaxing yet action-packed retreat, the newlyweds travelled from their home in Toronto to Johannesburg, Kruger region, Franschhoek and Cape Town, for an unforgettable two week trek.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND A trip to South Africa would not be complete without a visit to the Greater Kruger area to witness the abundant wildlife. Despite Johannesburg’s reputation, there’s quite a bit to do in the city and surrounding area. In fact, we spent three days there and visited the Cullinan Mine where the Star of Africa was discovered plus a cycling tour of the Soweto Township, which included visits to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu’s homes.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL It’s easier to spot wildlife during South Africa’s winter and dry season, from May to September, but we wanted to escape the Canadian winter and decided to go in February.

MUST DO EXPERIENCE Stepping back in time and exploring the dark history and South Africa’s era of segregation and oppression at Robben Island in Cape Town and the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg were heavy but powerful experiences.

HONEYMOON HIGHLIGHT The wildlife was unbelievable and the expert guides and rangers with G Adventures are incredibly knowledgeable. We spotted the Big Five (lion, rhino, buffalo, leopard and elephant) multiple times and even had an extremely rare encounter with an African wild dog.

STANDOUT STAY Our favourite accommodation by far was Karongwe in the Greater Kruger region. The property, staff, atmosphere and cuisine were all topnotch. We slept in permanent tents that fully immersed us in our surroundings in the African bush.
