Berlin partnering with textile recycling firm By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

A new recycling service will be launching in town next month, promising to save residents space in their closets and spare the town a few dollars on disposal costs.

Ohio-based company Simple Recycling will begin collecting used textiles, such as old clothes, shoes, belts or handbags, on June 17 in pink bags which will be mailed to households. Each recycling collection day, the company will pick up the

bags, which should be left curbside, and leave a replacement attached to the recycling bin. Deputy Public Works Director Jim Horbal said it’s a “win-win” for the town, which gets paid by the ton collected rather than paying

to dispose of the refuse. The company already operates in Newington, New Britain and Plainville, among other Connecticut towns. “We will be reducing the tonnage collected,” Horbal said. “Where we pay $64 a ton to dispose of it … the

Simple Recycling contract will be reimbursing the town $20 a ton collected.” Every recycling collection, which the town is currently paid $9 a ton for, would become a costly expense to the See Textile, A40

CATS OF THE WEEK Missy is a lovely calico. She is very friendly, social and outgoing. Missy was an only cat ever since she was a kitten so when she sees other cats she has a dramatic scream! She does not fight with them but it's clear that she relates better to people and is eager to be a loving companion again. Our beautiful, buff tabby Blossom is ready for a home. She is 10 months old. She was once a scared kitten but she is trusting people more every day. Blossom is great with other cats. For more information, visit hucatrescue.org or call 860-4795173.

Cops warn of thefts The Berlin Police Department says since the beginning of May there has been an increase in stolen motor vehicles and theft from motor vehicles. These crimes have mostly taken place on the west side of town. The BPD has increased patrols in these areas, but is asking residents to be extra vigilant and to call the police imme-

diately upon seeing suspicious vehicles, persons and activity. The BPD urges residents to remove valuables from vehicles or hide them from view, including garage door openers; and to lock car doors and roll windows up. Also, the department says don't leave vehicles running and unattended; and to leave exterior lights on.

Bereavement study The Stepping Forward in Grief Study tests two evidencebased online/app programs created by scientists and clinicians at Uniformed Services University and Columbia University to address grief-related challenges. These programs were developed in response to earlier research suggesting that griefrelated challenges can occur among bereaved military survivors, even many years following a loss, and that many surviving loved ones desire additional support. The study is now open to close friends and family members of those who died before or after Sept. 11, 2001 while serving in the military or as a result of their military service. BHS juniors inducted into National Honor Society By Jack Carroll Special to The Citizen

Earlier this month, a group of Berlin High School juniors was inducted into the BHS chapter of the National Honor Society in a ceremony at the high school. To earn this distinction, students had to have a cumulative, weighted grade-point average of 93 or above. In an email statement, the program’s advisors, BHS teachers Lisa Evans and Jessica Ramy, said: “It's impressive to see how students are involved with a variety of leadership and service experiences at the high school and within the community. This year's inductees exemplify the four pillars of National Honor Society; scholarship, leadership, service and character. We look forward to working with them

This year’s inductees repeated the National Honor Society pledge and received a special pin and certificate of acceptance. See Society, A8

BHS alumna earns Fulbright Scholarship

On May 12, Berlin High School alumnus David Bordonaro graduated cum laude from Sacred Heart University, double majoring in graphic design and marketing.

Local scholar Lauren Baretta has earned a Fulbright Scholarship and will teach English in Malaysia for 10 months beginning January 2020.

Back in March, Bordonaro won first prize at Sacred Heart for his advanced graphics design "Drones Are Coming.”

The Fulbright website states : “The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the largest U.S. exchange program offering opportunities for students and young professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and primary and secondary school teaching worldwide. The program currently awards approximately 2,000 grants annually in all fields of study, and operates in more than 140 countries worldwide.”

Bordonaro uses his talent to support causes such as autism. He was an executive board member of the Are You Autism Aware Club at Sacred Heart.

Also, he still keeps in touch with one of his favorite BHS teachers, art instructor Kathy Miller, a mentor of his.

At Connecticut College, Baretta majored in international relations and minored in English and earned a certificate from the Goodwin-Niering Center for the Environment.

Baretta graduated from Berlin High School in 2014 and from Connecticut College in 2018. In a Connecticut College press release, Baretta stated: "I have always wanted to see as much of the world as possible. The Board of Education also agreed, and voted to implement the proposed plan. To say that we cut school guards is a falsehood. How can we cut something that never existed?

Understand that, unfortunately, some people in our town are determined to wreak havoc. Worst yet, they are too scared to put their name to the lies. This is detrimental to the progress of our town.

We have been working on a school security plan for over a year. After last year’s budget referendum, we became extremely alarmed to see that anyone who walked into the school under the guise of voting had easy access to our children. We expressed this fact to the entire council and the council unani-

At the recent Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, Edge said schools could spur the development of restaurants and other attractions on the turnpike by bringing students to the area. Weather cooperates for annual Berlin parade By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

died in service to the country.

Children scrambled for candy and gawked at the fire engines rolling down Farmington Avenue during the Memorial Day Parade Sunday, with dozens of groups marching to the Veterans Memorial Park for a ceremony to thank veterans who

Veterans Commission Chairperson Charles Colaresi said he was glad to see so many residents take part in the ceremony, especially families who brought young children, as they learned the meaning of a holiday often viewed as just another day off work.

“I thank the townspeople for supporting us. The parade seems to get bigger and bigger each year,” he said. Starting at 9 a.m., the police department led the procession from St. Paul’s Church on Peck Street and on down Farmington Avenue. Around a mile down the road, the parade turned left onto Massirio Drive, passing the Veterans of Foreign Wars building then entering Veterans Memorial Park. See Parade, A41

"These honored dead, whom we remember today, gave the precious gift they had, life itself.” Lieutenant Colonel Nieves, who serves as the Surface Maintenance Director with the state National Guard, said she’s gotten too many calls informing her of the deaths of veterans she served with in the war in Iraq. She hoped to remind residents to not just remember those who have fallen in the line of duty, and the families whose hearts are heavier this holiday weekend, but to also reach out to veterans who still bear the scars from their service.

Just behind the police department, the guest speaker, Lieutenant Colonel Lesbia Nieves, led a group of veterans marching followed by a truck from American Legion Post 68, with more veterans waving at the crowds on the sidewalk. They were joined by local community and school groups, like the Berlin High School Marching Band and Hero Boxes, a nonprofit started by a Berlin resident to send care packages to troops overseas.
