Accomplished. Hardworking. Dedicated. Enthusiastic. Mature. These were words used by teachers when asked to describe Berlin High School’s Class of 2019.

Their years together as Berlin High School students will remain fond memories, but 2019 graduates said they are ready to move on to new experiences. "The world really is our oyster, and it's up to us to seize all the opportunities we are given,” Valedictorian Madison Monroe said during the school’s graduation ceremony, held at Central Connecti-
cut State University on Sunday. “I'm nervous to be leaving BHS behind, I am also excited to see what we can become, because there's so much that we can do.” Approximately 228 students walked across the stage at Welte Hall. Salutatorian Alex Halkias said he was glad to be part of a graduating class that he believes will continue along a special path.
"We have a class full of leaders, a class full of promising individuals ... and, yes, we may have lost almost every single tug-of-war, but size and strength is not all we need to be successful. Rather, we did it with our minds, our discipline and our heart. And yes, we're far from perfect, but in our flaws and in adversity, we showed resilience," Halkias said. See Grads, A7
Throughout their years at BHS, the Class of 2019 displayed a wide-range of skill sets, and a commitment to both academics and extracurricular activities. Take Ajlal Khan, for example. He contributed articles to The Citizen and was a member of the National Honor Society. Also, he created a student tutoring program, political club and a 3on-3 basketball tournament to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity. To Khan, it was just a matter of “getting involved” and not being “afraid to make mistakes.” Khan’s classmate McKenna Evans would agree with that sentiment.

In what started out as a Secret Santa purchase for a friend, Evans, after picking up pillowcases and hair ties at a discount store, launched a business, McK Scrunchies. Evans wasted no time promoting her hair band creations, and, back in March, McK Scrunchies took first place in the startup business plan category in a statewide DECA business competition. Edge said the new award additions were made to reflect the contributions made to the town by the diverse organizations which keep it going.
This year’s ceremony included three new accolades: the Innovation Award, which went to Steelwrist; the Entrepreneur Award, given to Dragonfly Design; and the Milestone Awards, which went to a half dozen businesses which are celebrating major anniversaries this year.

According to the town of Berlin’s GIS system, the 1.4acre property at 71-61 Kenmere Road is owned by Houston-based Reserve Mortgage Solutions Inc.

Shamock also raised concerns about additional costs if the city buys the property and becomes responsible for removing the septic tanks and treating any soil contamination.

Curbside textile recycling Berlin residents can now recycle unwanted textiles and small household items by bagging them and leaving them at the curb on their recycling collection day. Berlin is providing the free service in partnership with Simple Recycling. The list of accepted items includes all types of used or new clothing, boots and shoes, belts and ties, handbags, hats and gloves, toys, towels, sheets and blankets, small kitchen appliances, and more.

Principal Eileen Eustis, who was hired at the end of the last school year, said she couldn’t have asked for a better senior class to show her what Redcoat pride is all about. "You demonstrated dignity and class, and always studied, played, performed and competed with a full heart. That is what defines the true spirit of a Berlin High School Redcoat," Eustis said.
His father, Doug Tracy, said school officials visited him in the hospital to rehearse the live stream with them. "Like they say, it takes a village. And we had a village," said Nancy Tracy, the young man’s mother. Superintendent of Schools Brian Benigni urged students to find careers they’ll get fulfillment from, while improving the lives of those around them. "Here's some bad advice. Live each day as if it were your last,” Benigni said. “First, be thankful that you are not living in this situation and then realize how insane that is. You will need to make plans, have foresight and set goals, both long- and short-term. Heroes Walk
The Berlin Veterans Commission dedicated the Berlin Veterans Digital Wall of Honor on Nov. 15, 2018. The wall, located in the rotunda of Town Hall, is “Dedicated To All Who Proudly Served To Protect Our Country." A video slideshow, shown on a 46-inch TV, plays in a loop every day the Town Hall is open.
Memorial bricks are being sold for the “Heroes Walk” at the Berlin Veterans Memorial Park on Veterans Way. Each brick honors a veteran, living or deceased, who served in the nation’s military. The honoree’s name, military branch, unit or post and time of service are engraved on each brick before the brick is placed into the walkway of the park.
Berlin residents and/or their immediate family members who have served, or who are currently serving in the military, are welcome to be included on the wall. Bring information to the Town Manager’s Office, or call Peter Galgano at 860-604-7258.

The statements made by Deputy Mayor Brenden Luddy in The Berlin Citizen on June 13, 2019 do not surprise me. Town Council Republicans have consistently attacked anyone who they deem a threat.

1771 House, Woodruff Gardens dedicated at memorable event On June 1, members of the Berlin Historical Society and invited guests strolled the serene grounds of the organization’s new property. The occasion was the dedication and naming of the restored Woodruff house and recently-planted gardens at 725 Worthington Ridge. The property will now be known as 1771 House and the Esther Woodruff Gardens. Intimate tables with vintage table cloths and flowers dotted the lawn. Visitors were treated to strawberry shortcake, beverages, live music and the parklike setting. The event was a window to the kind of experiences the site can provide for the greater public. The house and grounds are in the shadow of the 1774 Worthington Meeting House, a town-owned building and one with great potential to be a mecca for history, arts, culture and heritage tourism for all ages once the interior restoration is complete. It was always Esther Woodruff ’s vision that her property “belonged” with
the meeting house and that the 1.4-acre grounds could provide additional parking and expansive green space that would enhance the meeting house project. After her death, the historical society’s board carefully studied the implications of buying the property. Had it not been for a generous bequest from Myrna M. Pauloz in honor of her mother, Ruby Nye Morse, a founding member of the society, this once-ina-lifetime opportunity
would have been lost. In late 2017, the Berlin Historical Society bought the property, ending a 147year period of ownership by the Woodruff family. Eben Coe Woodruff purchased the property in 1870. Parishioners at Berlin Congregational celebrated the church’s newly-renovated kitchen and the church’s ongoing commitment to the community during a “Celebration of Blessings” event held at the church on June 1. The event included music, food, exhibits of Berlin Congregational artifacts, children’s games and much more. Pictured: Jill Hansen; Rev. Thomas Dean, pastor; and John Wilcox.
Restoration has shown very early architectural features dating to the 1700’s. The front room was restored down to its original wide chestnut boards by members Pam Pethigal and Ken Ayers. The newer addition to the house, built in 1956, holds the Berlin Historical Society Research Center. Bookshelves, custom built by Ryk Nelson, contain the historical society’s book collection and maps, which are available for research, by appointment. Another highlight of the property are the gardens created in Esther Woodruff ’s memory. A second grade teacher, Esther loved raising monarch butterflies with her students and grandchildren.

Under Heidi Kropf’s direction, a butterfly garden took shape a year ago. A shade garden followed this spring. All work done on the house and gardens was accomplished through donations of materials and volunteer hours.

Even before the first shovel has been dug into the ground, businesses are showing interest in the five new buildings which are to be constructed adjacent to the Depot Road train station. On May 23, the town signed a purchase-and-sale agreement with Newport Realty, the development firm the town is partnering with for the design and construction of the site. The name Farmington and Steele was agreed upon for the project. In the weeks since the agreement was signed, Tony Valenti, who operates Newport Realty with another local developer, Mark Lovely, said he’s had numerous calls from businesses interested in leasing some of the 10,000-square-feet of retail space or the two-story medical office which is being planned for. “What we’re seeing is a lot of very strong mom and pops who have maybe one or two restaurants … and want this to be their second or third location,” Valenti said. Economic Development Director Chris Edge said he’s hoping for a handful of restaurants to move into the new buildings, inspiring further development of the area.
Edge added: "Here's my dream: you go to the Tavern (on the Trax) and they have a waiting list. So you say 'okay, I'm going to go to one of the other places.' Whereas now if the Tavern has a waiting list you get back in your car and you go out of town. Now that the purchase-andsale agreement's signed, everything's really starting to come together.” Newport Realty is sticking with its original concept plan for the development, Valenti said. This calls for a new boulevard between Farmington Avenue in front of the former Walgreens curving to the eastern side of the train station and the five buildings lining it. Construction would be broken into phases, with work hopefully starting on the first three buildings in the fall and being completed in 2020, Valenti said. Work on the final two, which are 30-unit apartment buildings tucked alongside the train station parking lot, would likely commence in mid- to late-2020. The purchase-and-sale agreement also transfers ownership of 861 Farmington Ave. to Newport Realty for $85,000 within 30 days of the signing. The town purchased the property in May for $280,000.

The acquisition of that property, which used to be home to The Drain Doctor and Country Kitchen, reduces the scale of the environmental remediation required at 889 Farmington Ave., which was found to be contaminated after the town foreclosed on Pioneer Precision Products in 2009. Valenti said they plan to renovate the 85-year-old building and lease it out alongside the new construction, calling it too nice of a building to sell. Under the agreement, Newport Realty will purchase 903 and 913 Farmington Ave. at their appraised values, $190,000 and $265,000, respectively. However, it will acquire 889 Farmington Ave. for $1.

Development
Advice to grads that applies to us all By John M. Jaramillo
This time of year, graduates of all kinds are transitioning from one stage of their lives, education, and responsibilities to the next. Here's a message to all of them out there as they make their way: Just keep getting better. Just keep going. That's the best advice I can provide to you. And don't dismiss it because it's simple. A few words can go a long way. Wherever you are, whatever you're facing, or whatever you may be unsure of: Just keep getting better. Just keep going.
And I know I can't customize the advice to you personally in these paragraphs, but I can try and motivate you to understand that you need to keep going for what's important to you. Too many people give up on who they are and what they can be. Whatever your environment is, whatever your circumstances are, and whatever your goals may be, just keep getting better and just keep going. “Just keep getting better” means improving every day. Although it sounds like common sense, most people live the same day over and over again without improving even slightly over what they did or who they were the day before. Get better for your own sake (first), and the sake of your family and community.
Actually, I want everyone to heed that advice. It goes for everyone who's moving from what they're doing today to what’s lined up – or not – for tomorrow. We all fall under that category – not just your traditional educational students.

College student summits Mt. Kilimanjaro Berlin High School alumnus Steve Bordonaro reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa – a 19,341 foot climb – on May 28. Bordonaro made the 4-day trek with 12 other University of Connecticut students. The trip, organized by Choose a Challenge, allowed the students to raise money for Make a Wish CT and subsidize a portion of the trip expenses. Overall, the UConn group raised more than $60,000 for Make a Wish. Bordonaro said, “Summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro was one of the toughest things I’ve ever done, but one of the most rewarding.”
