ry in the 30th House District race. Aresimowicz, a Berlin Democrat, said he is running for the last time, and he believes trading the House speaker for a political newcomer would cost Berlin and Southington “political capital” in Hartford. Michael Gagliardi, a Berlin resident, stepped into the race just this month after Republican candidate Steven Baleshiski dropped out. Despite his late entry, Gagliardi said there’s “builtin Republican support” in the two-town district that was roughly 500 votes away from electing University of Connecticut student and Republican Chris Morelli two years ago.

His biggest concern is spending and taxes. Gagliardi is opposed to tolls, which he said is a tax on the middle class, and wants to change the bailout offered to the city of Hartford.

“They had to see a commitment from the state,” he said.

Despite entering after filing deadlines for public campaign financing, he did receive $11,000 from the Citizens Election Program after his case was considered. House candidates who apply at the beginning of the cycle can receive $28,000.

Gagliardi is using the money on flyers and mailers, he said.

“Our deficit and our debt per person are ballooning out of control,” he said. “We need to look into cutting spending rather than tax our way out of the problem.” Aresimowicz said he supports tolls as a way to make out-of-state drivers pay their share towards maintenance of Connecticut’s roads. “We pay for Massachusetts repairs, we pay for New York repairs,” he said. “They’re driving through our state for free.”

“It really comes down to who you want to represent you in Hartford,” he said of the election. “It’d be an incredible disadvantage to trade the speaker of the house for a very nice individual who has never held political office.” Gagliardi said his family name isn’t unknown in Berlin, but added his late entry in the race makes it an

Do Incumbent Legislators Deserve to be Re-Elected? It is Time for Real Change in Hartford We all see the headlines: stagnant job growth, more taxes and regulations, people and businesses leaving the state, and the permanent financial crisis that the state budget has become. How do we fix this mess? For over 30 years the Democrats have controlled the state legislature. They have passed budget after budget with revenue gimmicks and have shown no ability or desire to control spending, or hold the line on taxes. While the state’s economy has grown at anemic levels since 1990, state spending has nearly TRIPLED. Has your income tripled since 1990? Unfunded pension and health care costs are now approaching $75 BILLION. If you ran your household or business like that you would be bankrupt. For the Democrats, it is business as usual. Einstein wittily noted that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result. It is time for the voters and taxpayers of Connecticut to end the insanity that is the Democratic-controlled state legislature, and vote for change. As your state representative, I will pledge to you the following:

Understanding Lymphedema

I will not vote for any tax increase, and will seek to reduce taxes where possible; I will not vote for placing tolls on Connecticut’s roads; I will vote for a lockbox program that keeps funding for roads out of the General Fund; I will not vote for any budget that increases state spending faster than the growth of Connecticut’s economy; ▶ I will vote to maintain services for those that are most vulnerable and in genuine need of aid. ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶

At a recent candidate debate my opponent, Cathy Abercrombie, would not pledge to hold the line on taxes. She indicated her support for placing tolls on our roads, which is just a commuter tax. She is clearly of the belief that there is more tax revenue to be had from the citizens to support further expansion of the state budget and its’ bureaucracy. This is the precise definition of a tax and spend politician.

In this FREE educational seminar, learn more about: • The effects of lymphedema on the body • Symptoms and causes of lymphedema

In her 13 years in the state legislature, my opponent has voted with her party over 98% of the time. She voted for each of Malloy’s tax increases. She has been complicit in the fiscal nightmare that her party has created, and still seeks your vote and support for the Democratic agenda. If you want to see more bad headlines, job loss and people moving out of state, then vote for Cathy and the Democratic ticket. If you are tired of the mess that Connecticut finds itself in and believe we need real change in Hartford to turn things around, then vote for me and the Republican ticket. Together we can begin to brighten Connecticut’s future.

Voters deserve a choice in every political race This election season, two candidates — one Democrat and one Republican — have stepped up to challenge two big names in Connecticut politics. Wallingford resident Aili McKeen is taking on Senate Republican President Pro Tempore Len Fasano in the 34th District race, and Michael Gagliardi, of Berlin, is looking to unseat Democrat Joe Aresimowicz, the speaker of the house, in the 30th.

need some fresh perspectives, we need some people to come in with different ideas.” Thanks to Gagliardi, voters in the 30th House District — which includes parts of Southington and Berlin — will have another option on Election Day. McKeen has done the same for residents of the 34th, which covers Durham, East Haven, North Haven and Wallingford.

Facing a difficult fight, McKeen and Gagliardi entered the political arena anyway. And that’s commendable. Voters deserve a choice.

“Democracy is not served without choice,” McKeen said. “This will be the first time since 2012 that people will have a choice.”

While McKeen has been campaigning since the summer when she won her Democratic primary, Gagliardi’s long-shot bid began just this month. The 47-year-old was chosen as the Republican nominee on Oct. 23 after previous GOP candidate Steven Baleshiski dropped out of the race after losing party support due to some disturbing social media posts.

Fasano has run unopposed six times since taking office in 2002.

“I don’t think any candidate should run unopposed. Even if it’s an uphill battle I think people should have a choice,” said Gagliardi. “We

Aresimowicz, first elected in 2004, also hasn’t always drawn an opponent. This isn’t how things are supposed to operate in a democracy. Lawmakers should be elected, not anointed. Kudos to McKeen and Gagliardi for throwing their hats in the ring. — Originally published in the Record-Journal.

Is ‘Cupping Therapy’ for you? Cupping Therapy is an alternative healing method which involves the placement of special cups on the bare skin to create suction. The cups are typically left on the skin for 5 to 10 minutes, when removed, they leave round marks or “bruises” on the skin where the cups have been placed. The marks can range in color from pale pink to dark red. How long the marks stay visible varies for each individual person.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, cupping is performed to ease many health issues, including respiratory conditions. Cupping Therapy can be integrated into a massage session or be done on its own. Cupping can be helpful in releasing scar tissue, easing muscle pain and tension, creating flexibility and opening perceived “blockages” in either the physical or emo-

Swim team has high hopes for postseason By Ajlal N. Khan Special to The Citizen

With the fall season winding down, many Berlin High teams have begun to celebrate their senior nights. The girls swim team was the most recent to do so, honoring its seniors with a win against Bristol Eastern Friday, Oct. 26. Despite the night being centered around them, the seniors were eager to talk about the team as a whole. “We’re definitely family. No matter how old the girls are, from freshmen to seniors, we all just bond. And I’m going to miss that,” said Redcoat captain Mckenna Evans. Said senior Nadia Humen: “We did really well as a team … for a lot of the girls this is their first year diving or swimming, and for everyone to do really well, it just shows how hard we’ve worked all season.” The Redcoat veterans came up big on senior night. Four of them won at least one event.

Welcome, Dr. Brian Wong

Seniors Gabby Pattavina and Alina Whiteside and sophomore Kelly Chmielewski also won an event against Bristol Eastern.

Platform: As elected officials have held budget hearings, Brochu feels the discourse around education in Berlin has focused too heavily on the service it provides and at what cost as a transactional relationship. “As a community we have an honest and robust conversation about education and its role in the community,” he said, noting

Platform: With the difficulties surrounding the state budget, DeLude believes the board should move forward with the expectation that it will receive decreasing amounts of state funding. He applauded the board for commissioning the study evaluating the elementary schools, which sought to find cost savings in the three schools, as an example of the steps which must be taken if the board is to continue improving educational quality as financial difficulties continue to swell.

Julia Motte Dennis

Platform: As the only teacher on the BOE, she feels she brings multiple perspectives to the board since she sees firsthand how policies can affect educators and students in the classroom. She would be opposed to any cuts to programming or other areas that could impact the quality of the education students receive. She was happy to see Effective School Solutions implemented in her first term and has pushed for the program to be funded in subsequent years.
