Candidates have entered the race to fill the state Senate seat left vacant when Sen. Terry Gerratana, of New Britain, accepted an appointment as an adviser in the state Office of Health Strategy.

Longtime wrestling fans got to meet a legend and kids got a lesson in what it takes to become a champion when twotime World Wrestling Entertainment heavyweight champion Bob Backlund visited Berlin-Peck Memorial Library.
Gennaro Bizzarro, a New Britain Republican and attorney, and state Rep. Rick Lopes, D-New Britain, are both seeking nominations when their parties hold conventions in the coming days. The 6th Senate District includes Berlin.
The Monday, Jan. 14 library event included a discussion of his book “Backlund: From AllAmerican Boy to Professional Wrestling's World Champion.” Backlund told the audience about the time he refused to smoke marijuana with three other wrestlers while they drove along a highway, instead opting to get out of the vehicle and walk home. "Every time you make a decision, there's a good way and a bad way,” he said.

To the editor: George Millerd penned a Letter to the Editor in which he suggested that the Berlin Republican Party is owed an apology.

In his letter, Millerd suggests that it is unfair to attribute the actions and words of this “one individual” to Berlin Republicans.

Board approves wide-ranging Program of Studies At the Jan. 14 Berlin Board of Education meeting, the board unanimously approved the 2019-2020 BHS Program of Studies. The Program of Studies is updated by the high school staff each year, and is designed to guide students in developing a personalized learning program to meet the Berlin Public Schools graduation requirements. As a small, comprehensive high school, BHS is proud of the wide range of learning opportunities available for our students. The Program
of Studies offers students nearly 200 courses in 14 areas of study. Students have the opportunity to achieve college credit during their time in high school in three program options, including 18 Advanced Placement courses, 11 UConn Early College Experience courses, and three College Career Pathways courses. Rebecca Mayer, of Berlin, was honored by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association by being selected a member of the Class S All-State volleyball team. It was the second year in a row that Mayer, a junior, made AllState. Mayer helped Sport and Medical Sciences Academy to the first conference championship and first conference tournament title for any girls team in school history. SMSA went 19-1 during the regular season and 3-0 in the tournament.

Officers find 20 pounds of marijuana, $27,000 in Berlin home A Berlin man has been charged after police said they seized 20 pounds of marijuana, vaping cartridges, cocaine, and thousands in cash from his home. Long Ngyuen, of 196 Wildermere Road, was charged with possession of narcotics with intent to sell and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell. He was held on $250,000 bond. KENSINGTON- Angelo E.F. Ciammella, 87, of Kensington, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his first wife of 49 years, Angela (Perrotta) Ciammella, who died in 2001. He then married Eleanor Chojnowski and shared another 16 years of happiness. Born in New Britain on December 4, 1931, Angelo was the devoted son of the late Emanuel and Pauline (LaRosa) Ciammella. Angelo graduated from New Britain High School in 1949. He served in the United States Army and retired from the New Britain Fire Department. During his time as a New Britain firefighter, he began pursuing a career in building custom homes, which grew into a land development business, A. Ciammella & Son, that he would operate until he retired in 1994. He enjoyed many years of retirement, vacationing and traveling to his other homes in Massachusetts and Florida. Angelo’s greatest joy came from spending time with his family and friends. He was an active member and longtime supporter of St. Paul Parish in Kensington. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Michael and wife Barbara; his daughter Lori Johnson and husband Ron; his daughter Cindy Butrimas and husband Tony, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all
