ELECTION 2018: 30TH HOUSE DISTRICT

GOP’s Baleshiski drops out of race By Mike Savino Record-Journal staff

Southington Republican Steve Baleshiski dropped out of the 30th House District race amid continued criticism over Facebook posts. Republicans in the district, which includes parts of Berlin and Southington, had until Wednesday, Oct. 17 or 21 days before the election, to find a replacement to run against House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz, D-Berlin. Baleshiski, 22, gave no reason for his decision in a one-sentence letter he filed with Secretary of the State Denise W. Merrill and did not return requests for comment.

Steve Baleshiski — seen here at Central Pizza in Berlin in May accepting the Republican nomination for the 30th District race for the state House of Representatives — has dropped out amid criticism over Facebook posts.

This honor is well-deserved, said Gary Barwikowski, present Commander of VFW Post 10732, “a Dornfried great many folks were heavily involved in the building and on-going maintenance … but Bob Dornfried did the lawn, handled hall rentals, maintained the building and grounds … he did the work on a weekly basis of three or four men.” Also, Dornfried was a post commander for three multiyear tours. Now, there is a “new” VFW Charter in Dornfried’s name and a plaque honoring his service and dedication to the country, state and Town of Berlin. Dornfried and his beloved

Do better

To the editor:

To the editor: How are residents supposed to respect the impartiality of our town paper when they are willing to publish a Letter to the Editor from Steve Baleshiski’s campaign manager without explicitly mentioning his role? The Oct. 11 edition published the Callahan letter and then allowed him to lie about his candidate’s social media history mere pages later. If it was a different Brian Callahan, that should have been mentioned to avoid any possible confusion. We need more transparency from our paper of record. I implore The Berlin Citizen to do better. Ben Smith Berlin

Liberals are against Steve Baleshiski, because he said something they don’t like? Oh boo hoo. Because liberals dont like it, doesn’t mean we all need to dislike it. There are as many opinions as there are people. For everyone that disagreed with Steve, there are twice as many that agreed with him. Where we go one, we go all. If you want Republicans to not voice their opinions, then Democrats have to follow that rule too ... Nobody says anything, everyone is offended and we call it a day. Agree to disagree and keep it moving. Deb Marturano Berlin See Letters, A13

Pop-up cemetery coming to meeting house lawn

From A12

By Lorraine Stub

Backing Abercrombie To the editor: I have been a resident of Berlin for many years and have been impressed with the caliber of people we have elected to public office. One of the very best legislators in my mind has been state Rep. Cathy Abercrombie.

Town Clerk Arthur Woodruff and his wife,

Rossiter, who lived nearby, entreats us to hear her story. It could well be the subject of a mini-series costume drama. Her legacy is an embroidered portrait now worth $1 million.

I’m bothered by Anne Reilly spreading lies about Joe Aresimowicz’s ethics and her purposely maligning comments about lobbyists. She implies many negative things about the lobbying profession, but she is ill-informed. Lobbyists represent many groups and many causes. Teachers, firefighters and non-profit organizations all have lobbyists representing their interests. I am a lobbyist who works for nonprofit organizations and I live in this district. When a lobbyist volunteers, it’s on their own time, and they do so because they believe in what the candidate stands for – just like any other volunteer.

Baleshiski From A1

Southington Republican Chairman Stephen Kalkowski and Berlin Republican Chairwoman Anne Reilly issued a joint statement saying they will continue to work to “to elect Republicans so that Connecticut can prosper through strong fiscal responsibility.” “We had given Mr. Baleshiski time to reflect on his use of extremely inappropriate language regarding several highly charged politically divided topics facing our state and nation, as well as to confer with his family and friends regarding his decision,” they said in the statement. “The Southington and Berlin Republican Town Committees do not, and will never, condone this hurtful

and dividing behavior and therefore, we had withdrawn our endorsement of Mr. Baleshiski prior to his resignation.” Fundraising could also be complicated for a new candidate. Baleshiski received a campaign financing grant through the state’s Citizens Election Program. A spokesman for the State Election Enforcement Commission said Friday it’s unclear whether a new candidate would qualify for the program. Baleshiski had been facing public criticism for the previous week over several Facebook posts, culminating with a group of roughly 20 residents rallying at Berlin Town Hall Thursday

evening, Oct. 11. The criticism revolved around posts targeting Muslims, a survivor of the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting, and others. "I'm not supposed to speak ill of David Hogg because he’s a ‘survivor,’" Baleshiski wrote in a post about David Hogg, who became an advocate for gun control after a shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. “Apparently if you've survived horrific events, that makes the stupidity spewing out of your mouth above reproach. I disagree. Hogg can burn in hell, I don't care what he survived. Survivors who wage war on my country are my enemies.” Baleshiski also made several

posts about Muslims and Islam, including saying the religion “isn’t compatible with western civilization.” He also wrote other posts blaming “the left” for mass shootings due to criminal justice reforms and gun control restrictions, and states that African Americans would not have been lynched if they owned firearms. He also defended his rhetoric in a few posts, which were made to both his personal page and one he created called “Steven’s Political Views.”

their sick, dystopian will on me and my family?” Baleshiski set his personal page to private, meaning only friends can see his posts, but his political views pages remained active and public as of Friday. Along with last week’s rally, he also drew criticism from Southington and Berlin Democrats, the Connecticut Education Association, and Aresimowicz.

On Friday, Aresimowicz did make a post on Facebook that invited Baleshiski to a “‘Steven you’re full of hate,’” food drive hosted by the he wrote in one post. “You’re Berlin High School football team at Veterans Park. goddamn right I’m full of msavino@record-journal.com hate.
