and taxes and we did not disappoint.”

Republican Gennaro Bizzarro won a special election to fill the vacancy in the 6th Senate district, capturing a seat vacated by Democrat Terry Gerratana’s resignation in January.

The district covers Berlin, Farmington and New Britain. Bizzarro was up against Democrat Rick Lopes, a state representative from the 24th house district in New Britain. The special election was one of five after Gov. Ned Lamont picked members of the General Assembly to join his administration. Lamont picked Gerratana to become an advisor in the Office of Health Strategy. Lopes said he called BizSee Bizzarro, A16

Cop returns to duty after treatment By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

Officer Aimee Krzykowski has returned to duty days after her final cancer treatment. “I was just trying to push and come back as soon as I possibly could,” she said Wednesday, Feb. 27, her second day back. “It felt nice to be back behind the wheel with the uniform on.” Her canine partner, Casner, was also eager to get to work. “He was dying to come back. He’s a young dog so he needs the work and stimulation,” Krzykowski said. After the department announced late last year that she would be taking medical leave for radiation treatment for breast cancer, local businesses began holding fundraisers, culminating in hundreds of local residents, first responders and friends of Krzykowski coming to Berlin High School for a pasta dinner and silent auction fundraiser. “The support was amazing,” said Krzykowski, who was been with the department for 15 years. “My department, the town, the community, everyone really rallied

pher Ciuci said the department is appreciative of all the support. “Everybody’s thrilled to have her back … the smile, energy, enthusiasm — all that stuff’s contagious,” he said. dleithyessian@record-journal.com 203-317-2317 Twitter: @leith_yessian

CATS OF THE WEEK

THIS SUNDAY IS...

HOT APPLE SUNDAE

Sunday, March 10

Sushi is a lovely, 3-year-old tuxedo. She was found begging for food and warmth. She recently had surgery to remove a large (benign) melanoma on her shoulder. Sushi is grateful, loving, affectionate and vocal. She does tolerate other cats but prefers human companionship. Milo is a handsome, 10-year-old, with golden eyes to match his golden spots. He is social, easygoing and carefree. He adjusted quickly to his foster home and gets along well with other cats. Consider opening your heart to a senior cat. Visit hucatrescue.org or call 860479-5173 or email hucatrescue@gmail.com.

Served from 10:30am to 4:30pm Tickets are being given away this week for one FREE HOT APPLE SUNDAE with every $3 purchase made any time this week

Fees raised at Timberlin

Mattress disposal options available

Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

The Berlin Public Works Department has revised the curbside bulk pick-up of bedding mattresses and box springs for residents. Two options are available for disposal of these items.

The commission raised the price of season passes for residents 5 percent and raised the price of golf cart rentals by 2 percent. Golf Commission Chairman Peter DeFazio said the plan builds upon the benefits card introduced last season, replacing the traditional discount residents received in past years. This year, residents who purchase the $25 rewards card receive a 25-percent discount on rates and fees. For non-residents, a $100 card will offer a 20-percent discount for the season.

The council is still considering the Golf Commission’s request to revise a requirement that Timberlin’s annual budget must at least break even. DeFazio said the requirement limits Timberlin’s ability to compete with other nearby courses.

Option 1 – Curbside collections will be assessed a $15 charge (check or cash) per mattress and/or box spring. Option 2 – Public Works Payment must be made has contracted with Bye/

Bye Mattress and the Mattress Recycling Council to provide for disposal of mattresses and box springs at the Town Transfer Station, 19 Town Farm Lane. Residents are responsible for the transport and proper placement of the bedding during normal business hours. There is no charge for disposal at the Transfer Station.

See Life in Full Bloom.

Mayor Mark Kaczynski was satisfied with the fee increases, saying that the council and the Golf Commission came to a compromise to prevent the rates for seniors from rising as much as other categories.

RARE DISEASE ADVOCACY

A5

Speaker of the House Joe Aresimowicz (D-Berlin), left, and Senate Republican Leader Len Fasano (R-North Haven) met with patients, families, caregivers and medical professionals at the recent Connecticut Rare Disease Advocacy Day. Lawmakers and attendees discussed the challenges rare disease patients face and how the state can better help them. Greta Stifel, center, of Berlin, who suffers from neuroendocrine tumor carcinoid cancer (NET), presented both legislative leaders with a stuffed zebra mascot, the symbol for her cancer. Just like no two zebras as exactly alike, no two NET cancer patients are alike. Diakun, JohnJohn Diakun, M.S.M.S.

As the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in the United States approaches, join the Berlin Historical Society for the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame’s inaugural presentation of “Votes for Women,” on Thursday, March 21, 5:30 p.m., at the historical society museum, 305 Main St. A reception in honor of Women’s History Month is planned prior to the presentation. Admission is free, but seating is limited and reservations are advised. To register, call 860-828-5114. Presented by Pam Dougherty, CWHF director of development, the event will highlight Connecticut women who fought on a local, state and national level for the right to vote, and on whose shoulders we stand. Dougherty will profile Connecticut women in the suffrage movement, including the extraordinary Smith Sisters of Glastonbury — the elder stateswomen of the early suffrage movement; Katherine Houghton Hepburn (the noted actress’s mother) — who revitalized the movement in the 1910's; Alice Paul — a national leader who was arrested seven times, jailed three times and force-fed in prison; Mary Townsend Seymour — who fought for black-women’s suffrage; and even Florence Griswold and Catherine Beecher, who were outspoken against women voting.

BOE COMMENTARY

Dougherty began her career in the non-profit sector in the Advocacy and Government Relations Program at The College Board in New York City. She later joined the development and communications office at The Center for Family Justice in Bridgeport. From there, she served as development manager at LifeBridge Community Services as the Development Manager.

BERLIN — The Cadillac tacos are as big as the heart of Uncle D’s Diner on Mill Street.

As with many regular customers, Silberman has been coming to Uncle D’s since the Anderson family opened the diner about five years ago. “His wings are to die for. Obviously, he’s known for his Cadillac taco,” Silberman said.

He recently commented that it was OK that his travels never got to Oklahoma, after camping in every other state in the continental US, nine Canadian Provinces and Mexico. He mastered the telling of bad dad jokes and the hidden wisdom of most of them. Additionally, he enjoyed playing cards and woodworking as time permitted. He was a longtime member of South Congre gational Church (New Britain, CT) and Kensington Congregational Church.
