Iconic pet supply store Labieniec’s to close By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

After 140 years in operation, Berlin’s iconic family-owned pet supply store will be closing its doors for good. “This type of business is just going away,” said John Connery, who has owned Labieniec’s with his wife, Joyce Connery, for over three years. He said they aren’t able to compete with big box stores and growing online marketplaces. Since they announced the closing, customers have streamed into the store to say goodbye or get some of their favorite items. John Connery

said they’ve passed some of their products to other local stores to make sure they remain available. Customers have been sad, but understanding, Joyce Connery said. While they focused on customer service and experimented with changing their hours and goods, the business was unable to become profitable. “You realize how many people Labieniec’s has touched,” Joyce Connery said. Housed in the same barn it opened in over a century ago, the shop sold pet food and

Special election Tuesday to fill vacant Senate seat Both candidates running in the 6th Senate District special election are focused on the economy and are looking to bring their experience representing New Britain to the Senate, where they will also serve Berlin and Farmington. Democratic state Rep. Rick

Lopes is facing off against Republican Gennaro Bizzarro for the seat, which was left vacant when Democratic senator Terry Gerratana was appointed by Gov. Ned Lamont as an advisor in the Office of Health Strategy. The race for the 6th Senate District is one of five special elections for the General Assembly following the ap-

pointments of five legislators to positions in Lamont’s administration. The 3rd and 5th Senate seats will also be up for election on Feb. 26, along with the 39th and 99th House districts. As small business owners, both candidates say they believe the state should aim to live within its means, although they differ on the

best way of reaching that goal. Bizzarro, 43, who owns a law firm in addition to serving as New Britain’s corporation counsel, said economic development and spending cuts are a needed relief for citizens. “I’m a staunch fiscal conservative and I think I would be a voice of reason,” he said.

Bizzarro says if elected he would support the renegotiation of state employee benefit packages. “It’s the law of large numbers and if you look at our obligations in Connecticut, the bulk of it is in state employee obligations,” he said. While he would honor the commitments that have alSee Election, A11

18-home subdivision planned off Ice Pond Road By Devin Leith-Yessian The Citizen

A local landowner is nearly ready to begin construction on an 18-home subdivision off of Ice Pond Lane. Town Planner Marek Kozikowski said the plan received final approval from the Planning and Zoning Commission at its Dec. 13 meeting and work can begin once construction documents have been submitted and approved by town staff. Ray DeCormier, who is partnering with local developer Jon Demko on the subdivision, said he hopes to see road building underway

within the next few months. Home construction could begin in five to six months.

DeCormier’s daughter, while the cul-de-sac has been named Hawks Landing.

DeCormier will have oversight of the design plans to ensure a degree of homogeneity. He envisions a neighborhood of homes in the $600,000 range following a traditional luxury design with a contemporary flair. “It's going to be really a beautiful neighborhood," he said.

"Hawks Landing is named that way because this is a very natural area," he said.

Most of the homes will be on the road which branches east next to 57 Ice Pond Land, with five houses on a small cul-de-sac budding off. The longer road will be called Brittany’s Path, after

STUDENT COMMENTARY

Berlin Helping Berlin The following was submitted by Berlin High School student Hannah Smolicz. Ten years ago, Jim Arnold and Mary Pacyna noticed the financial struggles that the town of Berlin may not always see, but have always endured. These two Berlin High School staff members strived to help those Berlin families and therefore decided to create Berlin Helping Berlin. This organization raises funds for people in the community, primarily within the school system, wherever they are struggling financially. For instance, Berlin Helping Berlin often assists students by paying for school events such as field trips so that they do not have to miss out on incredible experiences due to financial restraints. They also aid injured or ill teachers and students via donations or financial support. Berlin Helping Berlin is an exceptional organization that will benefit tremendously with increased community support. With your monetary or timely donation, you will be able to help your neighbors, classmates, and fellow townspeople. You may support Berlin Helping Berlin through the efforts of Berlin High School DECA . DECA is an international business organization wellknown for its business competitions, leadership events and involvement within local communities.

DECA initially reached out to Berlin Helping Berlin because the organization focused on providing aid to local families, a cause that the Berlin DECA members also feel passionate about. In the past, DECA has had the ability to fundraise for this organization by creating BHB wristbands and selling them at school events. Now, a couple DECA students, Hannah Smolicz and Nadia Human, have decided to further assist Berlin Helping Berlin relating to the annual Connecticut DECA high school business competition. These students will create a Community Service Project, which includes the general marketing of the organization itself while hosting a collection of fundraising activities. At the competition, Smolicz and Human will submit a 20-page paper outlining their campaign and also deliver a presentation displaying their results. A significant component of this campaign is the creation of an updated logo, website and slogan, the slogan being From Berlin, For Berlin. Their events and activities include hosting Coin Wars at Berlin High School, a November to December bake sale and major Berlin High School sports games raffles. Berlin Helping Berlin and DECA hopes to see your support throughout this project.

Letters Policy Email letters to news@theberlincitizen.com; mail to 500 South Broad St., Meriden, CT 06450 or fax to 203-639-0210. The Citizen will print only one letter per person each month. Letters should be approximately 300 words. We reserve the right to edit letters. Letters should be on topics of general interest to the community. We do not list names of people, organizations and businesses being thanked. Names of businesses are not allowed. Letters must be signed and names will appear in print. Include a phone number so The Citizen can contact you for verification.

Letters to the Editor Bad plan Well, the new governor should rethink his tax plan, or more people will be moving out of Connecticut.

In response to supporting Mr. Bizzarro, let’s remember who the Republican town committee in Berlin has endorsed; people who have showed bigotry and hatred.

Taxing food, prescription drugs, dentist visits? What’s with this guy? State senators and representatives must vote this plan out.

On Tuesday, Feb. 26, vote for a blue-collar, family man who understands the changes and needs that are vital to our community. Vote Rick Lopes.

To the editor:

The governor wants companies to move to Connecticut. Not so, with his tax plan. More people will move out, along with companies.

Frederick S. Morley Jr. Berlin

Henry Pustelnik Berlin

In case you weren’t paying attention, there’s a special election on Tuesday, Feb. 26 for a vacated state senate seat.

Common-sense leader

One Ned is enough To the editor:

Your options are clear. You can support the Democratic candidate, who appears If you want a commonsense leader who will stand to be completed mesfor lower taxes, no tolls and morized by Ned Lamont and his need to tax us to balancing the state buddeath. He believes in sadget, Gennarro Bizzarro is your choice for state sena- dling us with unfunded mandates, new taxes and tor in the 6th district (intolls. If that’s not scary cludes Berlin, New Britain enough for you, here’s the and Farmington). latest – school redistricting – which is regionalization Gennarro is a family man of your public school sysand a hard-working attortem. ney and business owner who will fight for the taxpayers in Hartford. To the editor:

Please come out and vote for Gennarro Bizzarro for state senator on Tuesday, Feb. 26. Sal and Sue Bordonaro Berlin

Vote Lopes To the editor: In response to several Republican letter-writers : When did the notion of high taxes and Democrats come about? Last time I checked Republicans and Democrats both live in this state and both have to pay the same taxes. Give it a rest. Under the Republican majority’s rule, taxes have gone up year after year in Berlin.

This is why I am supporting Republican Gennaro Bizzarro for State Senate. Say “no” to Ned Lamont! Vote Republican. Terry Tonina Berlin

Let’s change course To the editor: Question: Berlin, how would you like our school system to be part of New Britain’s? Your children being bused to New Britain? Well, currently there is a bill being introduced by Democrats that states just that (SB 454.) Not to mention a bill for 82 tolling stations in Connecticut (PB 102), a bill to "spread the suburban wealth" by the state taxing your property and giving it to mostly Democrat-controlled, indebt, irresponsible cities like Hartford. Don't like what you are hearing? Then Berlin, you need to get out and vote for Gennaro Bizzarro for State Senator on Tuesday, Feb. 26. He will not vote for any of these tax-and-spend Democrat bills. Scott Veley Berlin

School safety is job No. 1 The Berlin Board of Education is committed to ensuring that our schools are safe, secure learning environments for all students. We are continually improving and upgrading various aspects of school security and have been extremely active this year. The current reimbursement rate from the state on eligible items is approximately 45 percent.

The projects listed below have been completed or will be completed prior to the start of the 2019-2020 school year. Security Vestibules – Entrances will be updated to prevent immediate access to school hallways and students and staff. Construction will begin in April/ May at Willard Elementary School and during the summer months at Griswold and Hubbard elementary echools and McGee Middle School. See BOE, A12

BOE

Cornerstone

We are currently researching this project.

Phone Systems – The current phone systems are outdated and no longer supported at all three elementary schools. Updating our phone systems has been proposed in the 2019-2020 budget.

Cameras and Camera System – By updating obsolete camera systems at all elementary schools and McGee Middle School, they will be able to provide better coverage, reliability and connectivity. The new system will be nonproprietary and linked to the Berlin Police Department system. This update has been proposed in the 2019-2020 budget.

Raptor Visitor Management System – This past summer, the Raptor system was installed in all schools, providing an instant background check for all visitors and volunteers that enter the buildings.

Door Lock and Monitoring System – With the exception of Berlin High School, the current magnetic locking system at all schools needs to be updated and door frames may need to be replaced due to wear and age.

3M Safety & Security Film – 3M Safety film has been applied to various windows at all three elementary schools and McGee. Berlin High School is scheduled to be completed prior to the end of the 2018-2019 school year. The purpose of the 3M Safety & Security Film is to prevent the glass windows from shattering and holding the glass together. The 3M film can slow down an intruder and helps deter unwanted individuals from entering buildings.

“I loved the chick day … even the customers were like little kids,” Joyce Connery said.

Kristen’s Kloset is open to any high school student looking to attend their prom. Located at Southington High School, 720 Pleasant St., and sponsored by Southington Youth Services, it has an inventory of over 500 new and gently used gowns.
