Berlin’s justices preside over wide variety of nuptuals By Amy Prescher Special to The Citizen

By Amy Prescher Special to The Citizen On Sunday afternoon, the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain hosted a Donate Life Rose Ceremony to honor organ and tissue donors and to say “thank you” to families of donors who have given the gift of life under tragic circumstances. Karen Maier, of Kensington, spoke about how her deceased husband’s transplant extended his life over three years so that he was able to meet his four grandchildren and take them fishing. During surgery, in the early stages of pancreatic cancer, John Maier developed problems with his small intestine which great-

Joseph Casso happened to be in Town Hall paying taxes when he noticed the Town Clerk had an opening for the position of Justice of the Peace. On a lark, he filled out an application. A few weeks later, the man whose prior experience with weddings did not extend far beyond his own, was invested with the power and authority to unite hopeful couples in the bond of marriage. Now a veteran “JP” performing up to 15 ceremonies per year, Casso confesses he could not have imagined the emotional rewards of fulfilling his civic duty. “I love it,” he said. “It is

the best thing since color TV.” Karen Salwocki, who has served as a Justice of the Peace over 25 years since her term as deputy mayor, said she enjoys the special radiance given off by two people who are in love and want to be together. “I have a hard time not crying myself,” she said. That seems to be a typical experience. Many justices say they are deeply moved to witness this intimate and emotional moment in people’s lives. The town has granted the post of Justice of the Peace to roughly 60 residents. The Democratic and Republican Town Committees are allot-

Public hearing on budget April 12 — your chance to speak

A public hearing on the budget will be held at McGee Middle School, Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. The proposed general fund budget is $70,389,110, a total increase of 3.75 percent over the current year’s budget of $67,842,998. This includes a

2.4 percent increase for the Board of Education or $889,000, bringing the schools’ request to $37.9 million. The proposed mill increase is .97 mills which would bring the mill rate to 24.62. On a $250,000 house,

which would be assessed at $175,000 (70 percent of value), this would compute to an increase of $170 per year ( $175,000 multiplied by .00097). The proposed budget was approved in a 5-2 decision by the Town Council, earlier this month. The two Republican councilors and the five Democratic councilors split the vote along party lines. The budget referendum will be held April 26 with voting from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at all regular polling locations.

skill, and a willingness to learn from others,” said Mike Sperber, event chair. “This makes the participants of the FIRST program well equipped to enter the workforce.” Engineers, mentors, students, and alumni all worked together to create the robots used during the competition. FIRST is the acronym for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” FIRST co-founder, Woodie Flowers, who attended the event on Saturday, said “These high-school students design and build great robots, but because the FIRST Robotics Competition is a job too big in a time too short, they learn a lot more than robotics. They learn about themselves, they connect with others, and they get a much deeper understanding of the technology of tomorrow,” said Flowers, FIRST Advisor and Pappalardo professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

DUI checkpoint The Berlin Police Department will conduct a DUI sobriety checkpoint on the evening of April 8. The checkpoint will be set up on the Berlin Turnpike in the area of Middletown Road. The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Division to support increased DUI detection and enforcement efforts. The grant will help to provide funding to staff additional DUI patrols as well as roadside sobriety checkpoints. Roadside sobriety checkpoints have been shown to be the most effective method to detect and apprehend under the influence drivers.

Brides bloom in spring as wedding season begins By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen

Barbara Stasiak knows brides and their mothers, too. Here are a few things she’s learned in 16 years in the bridal attire business. “I know their size fairly accurately even before I measure.” “Plus-size brides have confidence and they’ll go with strapless.” “Mothers of the brides don’t want to look matronly.” Stasiak’s store, Bridal Bells Boutique, 114 Mill St., (Berlin Central Plaza), is the

scene of many “say yes to the dress” dramas. She’s been at this location for six years. “Some know exactly what they want, others have no idea,” Stasiak said. Sometimes the reality of what works isn’t close to what the bride first imagined. She may bring in a photo of a dress she loves and after trying it on, find the gown isn’t right at all. Another issue is sizing. Bridal sizing is different from department store sizing where sizes have shrunk (with vanity sizing a 14 could now be a 10). Bridal sizing

has not changed over the years. Shopping can be even tougher for the mother, Stasiak said. It may have been years — decades — since she’s bought a formal dress. Age, weight and style considerations can make for a daunting experience. It’s best to get busy on this purchase right away, Stasiak

Some justices perform a wedding ceremony every year or so, while others — especially those who advertise or have established a network of satisfied customers — have a steady business.

It is customary for most Justices of the Peace to tailor services to the wishes of the betrothed. Vows can be short and to the point, or enhanced with personalized renditions, music, readings, and other special rituals such as a unity candle or hand ceremony. Choosing a justice of the peace is a welcome compromise for couples of diverse religious backgrounds. According to Lois Procopion, Justice of the Peace it is not

uncommon to have an interfaith service combining different cultural and religious traditions such as an Irish Catholic blessing followed by the breaking of the glass and a shout of “mazel tov”. Erwin was a little surprised by the request, but “I told her I’d be happy to.” The date was Valentine’s Day 2011, and initially the knot-tying was to be held on the lawn outside the Board of Education offices, but as the board room was not being used, the nuptuals took place there. It was a brief ceremony, and small gathering with a few of the board employees looking on. “It was very nice and I received a lovely note,” afterwards, from the couple, Erwin said. — Olivia L. Superintendent of Schools David Erwin has been a Justice of the Peace for about 12 years. “I’d do weddings for people I know, or a friend of a friend,” he said. Then, there was a special request from someone in Berlin. Erwin had a meeting with a parent of a McGee Middle School parent and, in the course of the conversation, the fact that the superintendent was authorized to officiate at weddings came up. The parent told Erwin that after the meeting, she was going upstairs to Town Hall to get a marriage license — and would he consider doing 1196807

Connecticut justices of the peace are among the few in the nation who perform same-sex marriages. Some couples have actually moved into the state to take advantage of the progressive marriage laws. Unlike Massachusetts, Connecticut does not have a residency requirement, so it is much easier for gay couples to tie the knot. For some Berlin justices, wedding of brides to brides and of grooms to grooms makes up at least a quarter of their annual business. While the ceremonies are fundamentally the same, the text of

such as Elizabeth Park in Hartford, and St. Clements Castle, Portland. Casso has even performed a frosty Christmas service among the festive lights at Hubbard Park, Meriden. None of the justices interviewed identified a special wedding spot within the town of Berlin, although the Hawthorne Inn is a favorite of local couples. Art Powers married a couple at Sage Park, but it was ill-fated; the next day the disenchanted couple called to ask if they could reverse the vows and be single again. Nancy Cyr, who has performed many local ceremonies, said today many couples choose an intimate and familiar setting such as a backyard, shying away from the expense and stress of big weddings. Many prefer to put their money toward something else, like a down payment on a house. Often the bride and groom are established with households of their own and do not need presents. Cyr’s most memorable exchange of vows took place on Karaoke night at Heroes Grill and Bar (owned by Cyr) on Farmington Avenue to the surprise and delight of the regulars. The degree of casualness

or elegance for the Big Day depends on the taste of the couple. Karen Salwocki remembers being surprised, at an in-home ceremony in front of a fireplace, by a groom in a flannel shirt and stocking feet. Cyr has married couples in cowboy outfits and barefoot brides. Lois Procopion surprised the bride and groom on Christmas Day by wearing a red jacket and black velvet pants and boots. When the couple opened the door, the silverhaired justice announced, “Mrs. Claus is here to marry you!”

which has had a rose float honoring donors since 2003. New Britain Mayor Timothy Stewart, declared organ donation a “political and personal mission” in a short speech at the ceremony. He was inspired to become an organ donor in 1985 when his younger brother was killed in a motorcycle accident. He described how a loved one can live on through the organ recipient and how that gift of life helps the grieving process. 1194929

ly impaired his quality of life and were lifethreatening. This led his wife, Karen, to seek the services of a transplant specialist in Pittsburg, Pa. Ultimately, the doctor performed a multi-visceral transplant, including a new stomach, duodenum, small intestine, pancreas and liver, on John. The Maiers’ daughters, Kari Drost (currently a member of the Town Council) and Amy Daniele, also of Kensington, questioned the doctor at the time about their father’s chances for a healthy life following a surgery they called “almost sci-fi.” But as time went on, the family was deeply gratified and overjoyed by his dramatic recovery. The Maier family has many happy memories from the following three years, including a cruise of the Baltic region of Europe. Since John Maier passed away in May of 2007, Karen Maier was able to find and thank the donor family. She received a letter back from the parents of a 24 year-old man who were consoled by the fact that their loss brought life to others. Donate Life honors the legacy and memory of all donors and encourages all to “seize the day” and register as an organ donor with state donor registries. According to Dr. Joseph Kambe, director of Surgical Critical Care and Trauma Services at HCC, only about one out of 20 qualifying fatalities are viable as organ donors so that the pool of donors remains limited. On average, HCC has about six cases per year which are offered to specialty hospitals where transplants are performed. Over 100,000 patients in the United States are on a waiting list for an organ, but a single donor can save up to eight people and help many more. At the event, speakers addressed their personal experience with donors’ families and donor recipients. Fami-

lies came forward to receive a pink rose, symbolizing the beauty and fragility of life, while photographs of their deceased loved ones were projected onto a screen. The ceremony is among several events planned throughout the nation during April, the National Donate Life Month, which was created in 2010 to raise awareness of the urgent need for organ donors. The rose ceremony has ties to the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif.,

Budget options

To the Editor: The Town of Berlin budget, you will see at the public hearing April 12, is asking taxpayers for 4.1 percent more taxes from our household budgets than last year. This would add $205 to a $5,000 tax bill for a home with a market value of $302,000. This includes only $7 for just nine months of the initial, interest only, costs on only five of the $70 million for the BHS renovation. One of the suggestions, rejected by Democrat councilors, during budget sessions, was to look at further reducing the professional and technical categories of the town budget by as much as 10 percent. This would reduce the proposed tax increase by approximately two

percent. This would be an average; with some budget lines reduced more and others less depending on the judgment of the managers closest to each line. We need a paradigm shift in the budget process. Instead of one budget to chip capital items from we also need proposed options prepared by our paid managers. How would this work? The main budget would come from what is being done currently where the Town Manager and Board of Education present what they want. Then, have prepared at least two options with each including the impact on services. An option with reductions using a combination of capital, operating, and personnel changes to achieve no tax increase, and an option that cuts the main budget increase in half. Then make available electronic spreadsheets (which are currently withheld) for comparison and sensitivity analysis. With these options made available to the council we would have very specific ways to dam the increasing

flow of taxes from Berlin residents now and in coming years and know the impact. I look forward to your comments at the April 12 public budget hearing. Please send comments to (dkeatbrtc@sbcglobal.net) or call (860) 416-2773. David Evans Berlin Town Council

Get involved To the Editor: I will start by saying we needed to do something about the high school. Our children are our future and we need to ensure they have the tools to be successful in a competitive world. I heard many people saying our property values will decline if we do not improve our schools. I am not a fan of scare tactics to get votes. I guess the people making these statements are planning on moving. I am not concerned about the value of my home, because it is a home, not a money making investment. See Letters, next page

Commentary

Choosing perfect gown an adventure By Katherine Vandrilla Special to The Citizen (Katherine Vandrilla, 20, a St. Joseph College student, doesn’t have a wedding date on her radar at this point. However, she was a good sport and tried on some wedding gowns for The Citizen’s wedding special edition. Here she offers a first-timer’s eye-opening experience with a pretend version of “here comes the bride”.) So you finally found the perfect guy and are getting married. Now comes the difficult part: choosing the perfect wedding dress. You do not want one that is too plain, and yet if it is over the top extravagant it may be a little distracting. You have to find the one that feels comfortable and makes you look gorgeous. When you walk down the aisle and everyone’s eyes are on you, you want to look as beautiful as you feel. But how do you select that perfect gown? It is an exciting adventure that I got a taste of at Bridal Bells here in Berlin. When I walked into the store, I was overwhelmed by the selection of dresses. They had every color imaginable for bridesmaid dresses, and racks of wedding gowns from which to choose. The ones that caught my eye first were the ones that shone the brightest. Once I had selected a few that I liked best on the hanger, I had to try on the ones that were in my size. As anyone knows from experience, what you originally like on the rack may not look so good once you actually try it on, or vice versa. It is also difficult to estimate your size. You may be a size six in pants, but may take a size 10 gown. I was terrified while I was trying on the gown. It was so beautiful, and I was scared that I would rip or tear it. It

Katie Vandrilla

was so elegant and brilliantly white, I could never envision myself eating or drinking anything besides water while wearing it. Once I had it on, I realized how heavy wedding gowns are. Never have I worn something so heavy or expensive in my life. The average wedding gown alone will cost you anywhere between $800 and $1,000, and then you have to take into account alterations and accessories. That only made me that much more concerned about selecting the right one. I can see how brides would have to try on numerous dresses before making up their minds. This is the gown that they are getting married in, and will be in their photos and memories forever. Talk about pressure. In the end, I found a dress that I was very happy with, but I ultimately felt like a little girl playing dress-up with her mother’s gown. A woman can dream about and plan every detail of her wedding day, but until she has found the right groom to meet her at the end of the aisle, she will never truly find the perfect fit.

‘What is it?’

“Art”, “a disgrace”, “a sculpture” and “ballerina legs” were all descriptions The Citizen received for its “What is it” photo last week. No one gave a precise answer and so there is no “high five” awarded. However, many readers came very close and also provided some long lost history (some might say better left lost) about a “leg sculpture” installed at Town Hall, many years ago. Thank you to all who replied and expanded on our knowledge. According to Cathy Nelson, historian and assistant director at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library: “Star Dancer” was commissioned by the town as part of the erection of Town Hall. It was a cast aluminum sculpture about 7.5 feet high. On March 22, 1983, it was voted to sell the sculpture back to the artist. Here are some of your comments: “It was the horrible statue that was in front of the Town Hall when it opened.” “What a disgrace that thing was.” “It was funny when kids put Pampers on it years ago.” “The scupture was located at the Town

The vote on March 15 was only the beginning of a multi-year process. We may have approved $70 million, but that does not mean we need to spend all of it. Should we form a committee to monitor the project and decisions being made? That will be true community spirit. I would like to see everyone get involved in the annual budget process as they did for the recent referendum. The budget meeting is April 12. Attending the meeting is a great way to get an

Hall when Arthur Powers was mayor. I do not know what it was called but it looks like ballerina legs.” “The sculptor was paid to create it, and then there was debate about removing it.”

overview of how your tax dollars are being spent. Everyone seems to be active when there is a perceived problem — if we all got more involved on a regular basis maybe we would not have problems that need immediate fixes. Should we consider a new method of thinking when it comes to our public buildings? Plan for replacement of roofs similar to the way condominium associations do — put a little money away each year to pay for part of the project. How many of you bought your last car/home without giving a down payment? This is called fiscal responsibility. We need a lot more of it by our government. Brian Pskowski Berlin

Each year the Berlin Chamber of Commerce looks for nominations of businesses and individuals within the Fuechsel Berlin Chamber community to honor at the Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony. Criteria for these awards varies from those who jump right in and participate with the Chamber in the first year as a member to those who have been long-standing businesses. The Town of Berlin also honors those who have chosen to serve this community, develop this community and those who have chosen not to leave this community by bringing their business to Berlin or expanding an existing business. This year the Chamber honored the following: For being an active New Member of the Year and signifi-

cantly contributing to chamber programs and events, Ryan Kavarsky of No Name Tortilla Grill. For beautifying an eyesore in the business district, the Beautification Award went to The Baltic Restaurant. Two winners were honored for 50-plus Years in Business, McCue Mortgage celebrating 62 years and Royal Machine & Tool Corp celebrating 59 years in business. The “William S. Thomson Community Service Award”, was named after the late President of the Chamber Board who exemplified the term community service, went to Lenny Tubbs of Kensington Auto Ltd. for many years of volunteer service with several groups and in many capacities. Employee of the Year Award went to a long time employee of New Britain Transportation who has been with the company for 37 years: Frances Drouin. The final award is the Chamber’s most prestigious award, Business of the Year Award, in which a company is honored for

their commitment to the Berlin Community as an ethical business owner or community volunteer. The winner, CARSTAR of Berlin, far surpasses these expectations having been nationally recognized and awarded within their own trade for superior customer service and skilled body repairs. The Chamber honors companies and individuals each year. The time to start being considered for recognition is now. One misconception is that you need to have been a member of the chamber for a long time – not true. Your professional manner and significant participation within the community and/or the chamber will not go unnoticed. The only stumbling block is that next year, when the chamber solicits for nominations, you will be up against some tough competition. There are some great, dedicated individuals in See Chamber, page 23

Great music, complex plot for ‘Little Women’ By Katherine Vandrilla The Berlin Citizen

Little Women cast, clockwise from top left: Amanda Maule, Niki Dean, Jennifer Flannery, Kim Bosse, and Caitlyn Budnick.

Little Women The Broadway Musical was Berlin High School’s choice for its annual spring musical. The production, based on the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott, ran this past weekend. With a focus on one character’s story, Little Women starred Jennifer Flannery as Jo March. Jo is a tomboy inspiring to be a writer, and the play begins in New York where she is trying to get one

of her works published. With each rejection letter she is told that writing is not a woman’s job, and she would be better off going home to have children. Later, in the story, she returns to her home in Concord, Mass. Her three sisters were played by Caitlyn Budnick as Meg, Niki Dean as Beth, and Amanda Maule as Amy. The musical, directed by Robert A. Kelly, was exceptional. The set was simple and efficient, and the costumes elegant. The numbers

were nicely executed, and the choreography was well rehearsed. The cast seemed to genuinely enjoy what they were doing, and the enthusiasm carried over to the audience. The storyline itself seemed rushed, as if watching the book performed in less than three hours, which

meant there were many details to absorb all at once. Watching four girls grow up — and yet the passage of time was difficult to grasp. Jo’s world quickly begins to unravel before her eyes, as she sees her sisters grow-up,

Spring preview: Several teams expecting big things By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

The 2011 spring sports season at Berlin High School got under way this week. The following takes a brief look at BHS varsity teams that will be competing this season.

Baseball

Coach: Leo Veleas (25th year, 420-111). Assistants: Frank Naples, Nick Pepe. Last year: The Redcoats rolled up a record of 13-8 and were knocked out of the CIAC Class L state tournament with a 2-1 opening round loss to Bristol Eastern. Key loss: Anthony Marzi. This year: Berlin returned many varsity-tested players, including seniors Brendan Germano (shortstop/pitcher), Will Matuszak (outfield/pitcher), Austin Barnes (pitcher/outfield), Mike Cowperthwaite (first base/pitcher), Zach Zulkiewicz (outfield/pitch-

er) and Jamie Brancato (second base). Barnes picked up several victories on the mound last year, and can hit as well. The Redcoats will be looking for Germano and Cowperthwaite to come through at the plate as well. Other starters include senior catcher Joe Dellaquila and junior third baseman Bobby Mozzicato. Coach Veleas also mentioned junior Timmy Norton, who will help shore up the pitching staff, versatile senior Matt Papke, who missed nearly the entire 2010 season with a broken hand, and third baseman Mike Perno, another senior. Matuszak, Barnes and Cowperthwaite are team captains. Outlook: Veleas stressed that his seniors need to pull the weight this spring. “They’ve been through the system. They know what we’re all about. And I hope they pick up the slack,” the veteran head man said. “It’s their team.” Veleas said his club has

If the Berlin High School baseball and softball teams are to thrive this season, Will Matuszak and Monique St. Jarre, pictured, will have to turn in productive seasons. potential, but as usual, the coach would not prognosticate about a win total. Anyway, in Berlin, a “successful” season is a relative term. “When we win 13, 14 games, usually it’s not good enough” for fans, and critics, said Veleas. “It’s hard to play here.” Veleas is not sure who the big dogs in the Central Connecticut Conference South will be, but knows wins will not come easy. “There are no cupcakes in this league,” he said. “We’ve got to be ready to play. It’s as simple as that. Every game is extremely important to us.”

Softball Coach: Jason Pires (eighth year, 83-67). Assistants: Joy Cooper, Andrea Gallo. Last year: The Lady Redcoats were eliminated from the CIAC Class L state tournament with a 6-0 opening round loss to Sheehan, and ended the year with a mark of 13-8. Key losses: Kaitlyn Bovee, Lindsay Erickson, Samantha DeGroff, Jill

Young, Allison Brochu. This year: Berlin returned a solid core of experienced players, including seniors Stephanie Lapierre and Jess Szczepanik, and juniors Paige Owens, Brittany Labbadia, Sarah Brochu, MacKenzie Freeland and Monique St. Jarre. St. Jarre, a pitcher, and Lapierre are a veteran battery. Lapierre gets it done offensively as well. She batted .316 and drove in 10 runs as a junior. Labbadia and Freeland each hit .333 in 2010. Labbadia also had eight stolen bases. Lapierre, Labbadia and St. Jarre are team captains. The Lady Redcoats’ top newcomers are senior Katherine Harrison, juniors Kelly Walsh and Erin McKinnon, sophomore Katherine Burek and freshman Mikayla Harris. Outlook: Berlin has a varsity-tested pitcher-catcher tandem, and an experienced infield overall. Also, the locals have good speed, contact hitting and solid defense. On the downside, the

Lady Redcoats don’t have much in the way of power at the plate, and their outfield has been revamped. Still, Coach Pires expects to finish “well over” .500 and contend for the Central Connecticut Conference South Division title. Bristol Eastern, Bristol Central and Maloney should be in the mix as well. Berlin lost a lot of talent from its 2010 club, but Pires said he has “capable people to replace the gifted players who graduated last season.” “I look forward to an exciting and successful season,” the eighth-year head man said.

Boys Golf Coach: John Line (fourth year, 87-11-2). Assistant: Stan Brittingham. Last year: The Redcoats finished seventh at both the Central Connecticut Conference and CIAC Division II state tournament. Key losses: Joe Cooper, Ryan Campbell. This year: Berlin has a See Golf, next page

man said Scheyd has the potential to be one of the top players in the state. Fagan should be up there as well. As for Stickel and Deutsch, Barnes is expecting “breakthrough years.” Barnes’ major concern is finding a consistent performer to play at the 5 spot. “Anyone can have a bad day. And if that happens to one of our top four players, having a strong No. 5 as a security blanket will be critical,” he said. It looks like Berlin and Farmington will battle it out for the CCC title. The Lady Redcoats also should be in the hunt for the state crown. “While the weather has been horrible, making practice difficult, our key players all show signs of improvement from last year,” said Barnes. “I know most of the girls worked very hard on their games over this past summer, and it seems to be

showing.”

Boys Track Coach: Rick Hanbury (18th year). Assistant: Nick Chapman. Last year: The Redcoats finished second at the Central Connecticut Conference South Division meet and 13th at the CIAC Class MM state championships. Key losses: Nick DeLoia, Steve Nelson, Mark Jolley, Ian VanderGulik, Taylor Tavarozzi, David Campagna, Ryan Bisson. This year: Berlin will lean heavily on its pole vault and distance crews. Senior Jimmy Nolan, an All-CCC South performer, owns the school record in pole vault. He competes in high jump as well. Joining Nolan in pole

stacked lineup, highlighted by senior Kevin Jud. Also back in action are seniors Brendon Hull and Chris Martino, and juniors Connor Bowen, Pat Bostrom and Jeremy Desimone. Jud and Hull are team captains. At the 2010 CCC tournament, Jud shot a 77, Hull carded an 81, and Bowen put up an 82. Jud went on to fire a 74 at the Division II event and finished one stroke shy of qualifying for the New Englands. Outlook: Look for another big year from Jud, a threetime All-Stater. Jud’s first time out this spring he shot a 36, with three birdies. “Golfwise Kevin is off to a good start, and his focus is showing,” Coach Line said. “That intensity and focus will carry over and he’ll lead by example. He knows he is the leader and wants to finish strong, both for himself and for the team.” Line has high hopes for his team’s other captain as well. Hull “quietly goes about his business, has a real passion for the game, but keeps things in perspective,” the coach said. With several tournamenttested guys on his roster, Line has high hopes for the Redcoats. He wants to win the CCC South and compete for both the CCC and state tournament title.

Also back are starters, juniors Victoria Fagan (9.1 scoring differential, AllCCC, All-CCC Tournament Team) and Emily Stickel (12.4 scoring differential, All-CCC Tournament Team) and sophomore Emily-Anne Deutsch (10.5 scoring differential, All-CCC, All-CCC Tournament Team). vault are versatile seniors Zach Giaccone (800, 300 hurdles) and Shaun Sullivan (long jump, 3,200). Nolan and Giaccone are team captains. The Redcoats’ top returning distance man is junior Connor Hilbie, an All-CCC South competitor. Other returnees the locals

will be counting on are senior Jake Cyr (shot put, javelin), junior Alex Taddeo (hurdles) and sophomore Kevin Main (1,600). Outlook: Berlin’s throwing and sprinting contingent were hit hard by graduation, but the Redcoats have some proven point-getters in action. Hilbie, Main and Sullivan give Berlin a strong distance crew. Also, with three state qualifiers back in pole vault

— Nolan, Giaccone and Sullivan — the locals should be in good shape there as well. However, with many untested guys in action this spring, Coach Hanbury is not setting the bar too high. “I am hoping for a .500 season, but would not be surprised if we finished lower,” the veteran head man conceded. “Unless we can field competitive sprint relays, we will suffer in the team scoring. Individually, we have several stars, but not enough depth to win a dual meet at this point in the season.” As usual, Bristol Central is pegged as the team to beat in the CCC South.

Girls Track Coach: Steve Soucy (second year). Assistant: Josh Rosek. Last year: The Lady Redcoats finished second at the Central Connecticut Conference South Division meet and 17th at the CIAC Class MM state championships. The locals went 9-2 in dual meets. Key losses: Nikki Kureczka, Kim Rasmussen. This year: Berlin returned a crew of big meettested athletes, including junior Kate Piotrowicz, who finished seventh in shot put and 11th in discus at the 2010 Class MM meet. Piotrowicz went on to place sixth in

hammer throw at the state competition, and 16th in hammer throw at the New Englands. Other key returnees include senior Carla MangiafiSee Girls, page 24

co, who took second in high jump at the CCC South meet last spring, and sophomore Catherine Voelpel, who finished fourth in the 400 in Class MM. Voelpel is a quality sprinter as well. Also back are juniors Alex Carbonell (sixth, 800, Class MM) and Kaylene Sylvain (14th, 1,600, Class MM). In sprints, the Lady Redcoats are counting on points from senior Jessica Lavoie and juniors Madison Tavarozzi and Lisa An-

dreana. Seniors Jacqueline Carlson and Dawn Grabowski are team captains. Outlook: Berlin has some excellent individual performers, but with a relatively small roster, the Lady Redcoats may have a tough time generating a lot of points in dual meets. “Individually we have kids that will win their event outright almost every week,” Coach Soucy said. “It will be the second- and third-place points we will need to focus on.” The second-year head man
