Berlin florist helps bring holiday magic to governor’s mansion By Olivia L. Lawrence The Berlin Citizen President of the Connecticut Florists Association Rosemary Agostinucci, of Kensington, was at the governor’s mansion in Hartford Sunday as Connecticut florists, nurserymen, greenhouse growers and Christmas tree growers got together for the annual holiday decorating event at the residence. “The house is lovely…we have the same people every year who are willing to give their time to do the decorating,” said Agostinucci, who is in her second term as CFA president. A

member of the American Institute of Floral Designers, her family has been in the florist business throughout the area, including Berlin businesses, since 1912. Agostinucci has been involved with decorating the mansion since Lowell Weicker was elected in 1990. At that time, the mansion was in poor repair and just a few people were involved with the project, which included some restoration efforts. Margot is the daughter of Michele Fischer-Paul and Michael Paul. She has an older brother, Mason, 15. Safer sidewalks installed at the Senior Center

Access to the Senior Center was upgraded over the past week with better sidewalks and new handrails installed. At issue was a steep slope from the upper parking lot, where most seniors park, that it was necessary to navi-

gate in order to get to the center. The incline was part of the road, with no sidewalk or other assists for visitors. From the Commission on Aging and a Senior Center member, Barbara Gombatz said the slope had been a concern for the COA for several

years. She was glad to see the work getting done “before the weather gets bad.” The improvements were funded by $50,000 in grants designated for Americans

with Disabilities improvements which were allocated to the Senior Center Walkway Fund. Gombatz said the funds had been “lost” in the budget

for awhile, but Finance Director Jim Wren re-examined the town’s finances and successfully located the money, allowing the project to move forward.

Thanksgiving eve fire at Worthington Ridge house

A house fire on Worthington Ridge Thanksgiving eve temporarily displaced several people over the holiday. No one was injured in the Nov. 24 incident and three cats were safely retrieved from the house, according to the fire marshal’s office. However, repairs will need to be made at the 801 Worthington

Ridge house. The property is owned by Grace Shore, daughter of former Mayor Arthur Powers, and other members of her family. “The firemen were really wonderful. Chief (Jim) Simons was great. They really knew what they were doing,” Shore said. Friends pitched in to help with hous-

Deputy Fire Marshal Matt Odishoo said it appears the fire started due to “sparks and embers” that escaped from a first floor fireplace through two clean-out openings that were not shut. Books and paperwork were located near a clean-out in the basement and these materials ignited. The family noticed an odor and subsequently discovered the fire in the basement and called in the emergency. Firefighters from the Berlin, Kensington and South Kensington fire departments responded.

Readers’ poll Here are The Berlin Citizen online poll results for last week. The question was: What’s the best thing about Thanksgiving? The food and drink. When else can you stuff yourself like that without guilt? 16% Spending time with family and friends. People have busy lives. It’s nice to reconnect. 57% The good stuff on T.V. from all over the town. Raising Berlin member Kristin Snyder said “I think we have made some welcome changes from last year which has made it even better.” Despite a nip in the air, people appeared to have a good time. Preschoolers to high school students — kids of all ages — were present at the event. Resident Brian Smith offered the prevailing opinion of “I really liked it.” The event included a variety of events: food, raffles and Christmas carols sung by the children of Raising Berlin moms and the McGee Sound Express. Salina introduced a rendition of “Here Comes Santa Claus” as the Santa Express arrived bringing a special guest from the North Pole to light the tree. Patricia “Patty” (Simone) Norton-Young, 67, of Kensington, the b e l o v e d mother of Craig Norton and Taylor Norton Coccomo died unexpectedly Nov. 18, 2010 at Hartford Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Pauline (Plocharczyk) Simone, and step-daughter of the late Doris (Paradise) Simone. She graduated from Plainville High School in 1962 and the New Britain General Hospital School of Radiology in 1964. She worked for several area hospitals including New Britain General and Bradley

Memorial, and she was currently employed at the Grove Hill Medical Center. She was a very caring and generous woman with a heart of gold. CitizenOpinion Letters to the Editor

About those fields

To the editor: I am not sure that I agree with the statement, by Friends of Berlin Baseball, that the number of soccer fields in town is nine. I can think of only five that are available on a year round basis, two or three that can be used only in the fall (due to baseball), and one that can be used only when football isn’t using it. But while we are on the subject of “only” fields, the town should consider making Sage Park front a “soccer only” field and stop using it as a parking lot. Imagine having your kids play on a field that was used the night before to park more than a 100 cars on it — especially if it has rained. The ruts created by the cars create a hazard for the elementary school-age soccer players who use that field. Talk

about a safety issue. When the town finally cleans up the piles of whatever, on the old car lot next to Sage, maybe it can fix that for parking and leave Sage front for soccer only. If we need more fields maybe the empty lot across from the high school should be considered. Nancy Kennure Berlin

Timberlin’s future To the editor: Throughout 2010, Brent Paladino has run large outings, coordinated staff, set up junior clinics, and worked constantly at Timberlin to make sure someone was in control. Serving as interim head professional this fall, Brent was not out of his element, but rather where he belonged. To the average person, Timberlin may seem like just another municipal golf course. However, to some of us, it is home. Hav-

ing grown up at Timberlin, I can truly say things have never run more efficiently than they have this year, especially since mid-September. The passion, poise, and determination Brent has worked with these last two months has certainly proven that he is a capable, responsible, and trustworthy man for the job. Booking outings, running outings, operating the website, and going to town meetings are just some of the things Brent did for Timberlin. The knowledge of how Timberlin operates and the people Brent knows are superior to any other applicant, and that is a fact. Another important quality Brent brings to the table is his positive image. When people hear, “Timberlin” they automatically think, “Paladino”. There is no need to take this positive connection away from Timberlin by See Letters, page 20

National call for Christmas Boxes for the troops Show them how much we care

‘Tis the season — and this is a national call from SupportOurTroops.Org to all Americans to show their love and support this holiday season for our deployed troops. Join us in our mission to ship Christmas Care Boxes to our soldiers overseas, and help us send a little bit of home and comfort their way. S u p p o r t O u r T ro o p s. O r g makes this call on behalf of the 60-plus troop support groups across America who send care packages to the troops. Our deployed soldiers are far away from their loved ones, sacrificing daily for us and our country. Many don’t have a support network at home. We need to show them we are with them now more than ever during the holidays, when things can be especially tough. “We currently have Airmen stationed at forward operating bases throughout Afghanistan performing “outside the wire” operations in harsh conditions and many of them haven’t received anything from home. I was hoping you could send some care packages this way. I know it would definitely boost their morale. Thank you for your continued support — it really means a great deal to everyone here,” said Chief Bud, serving in Afghanistan. Want to make a difference in the life of a soldier this Christmas? It’s simple. Just go to SupportOurTroops.Org, and click on the Christmas 2010 Care Package Icon. Over 90

Surviving the holidays on Facebook The Citizen navigated the holiday weekend with our Facebook fans as we took on the topics that dominated our Thanksgiving conversations. Here are a few of the pithier questions and comments. What’s worse — shopping Black Friday or a TSA pat down? TSA pat down wouldn’t be too tough to take if you were about to fly off to a tropical island. However, shopping on Black Friday is always brutal. Both are bad but working at a store on Black Friday is worse. Getting a pat down while shopping — I’ll pass on both, thanks! I’m thinking — diet. Parks and Rec are supposed to have some good Pilates classes. What to do with leftovers? Turkey tetrazinni…turkey soup…turkey pot pie... Flaming turkey roll! Sandwich: turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and stuffing...yum!

A season of giving

In cooperation with the town’s community services department, The Berlin Citizen, 979 Farmington Ave., welcomes residents to stop in, see our tree, and if possible, make a donation of a gift or gift card for a child in need in our community. We are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and intermittently during the afternoon.

She and daughter, Stephanie Glidden, are collecting toys and gift cards for the town’s community services department. Christmas, children, is not a date. It is a state of mind. — Mary Ellen Chase

Good Cause Gifts is featuring a “giving tree” at its shop at 150 Mill St. Store Manager Mary Greene and staff Jessy Foster, at right, explained the concept. The giving tree is a project of new members of the Berlin Junior Womens Club. Gift tags decorate the tree and state whether the person, needing a gift, is male or female and what he or she might like to receive. Customers take a tag, purchase the desired item, and return it to the store. Requests are small: a Walmart gift card, a book of poems, a pair of gloves. Of more than 60 request tags about half have been taken. The store is an enterprise of Futures, Inc. a non-profit agency providing services to young adults with special education needs. The shop offers unique gift items.

The Hospital of Central Connecticut’s comprehensive breast program was granted a three-year, full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. Accreditation signifies that the hospital’s breast program demonstrates compliance with the NAPBC’s treatment standards for women diagnosed with diseases of the breast, including breast cancer. NAPBC’s standards for proficiency include center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement. The Hospital of Central Connecticut’s breast cancer program includes two breast nurse navigators and weekly breast conference meetings. Nurse navigators guide patients through the healthcare system from diagnosis through treatment. Among the program’s educational initiatives are survivorship workshops, manuals for patients with breast cancer, and community education about breast health and breast cancer. Accreditation by the NAPBC, administered by the American College of Surgeons, involved a rigorous, voluntary evaluation process and performance review. Care at an NAPBC-accredited center denotes patients have access to comprehensive care; a multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate best treatment options; information about ongoing clinical trials, new treatment choices; and quality breast care that is conveniently located. It all comes down to this Football playoffs underway By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

Certainly, some area football fans had to look twice at the score — 42-20. Berlin, a relatively small school, blasted one of the state’s biggest, New Britain, Thanksgiving Eve at Veterans Memorial Stadium. And the game wasn’t even that close. Berlin eased up on the gas pedal, early, and New Britain scored all its touchdowns in the fourth quarter, against the Redcoat reserves. Berlin’s Max DeLorenzo, who tallied five TDs that night, wasn’t sure he’d see the day the Redcoats would top New Britain — one of the state’s most feared programs just a few years back — with such ease. “Not really,” said DeLorenzo, who rolled up 155 yards on just seven carries Thanksgiving Eve. “But this is our year and we clicked on all cylinders tonight. We were fortunate to get out and have a quick start.” Berlin (10-0) led New Britain (1-9) 42-0 in the second quarter. The clock remained running the rest of the way, the football equiva-

lineman Joe Dellaquila said. “We wanted to come out, do a little bit better than them, and do what we can to win this game. As the score

shows, we did it.” Berlin claimed the Central Connecticut Conference Division III title this fall and has generated 405 points,

while allowing just 114. Coach John Capodice said the Redcoats have lived up to his expectations. “We thought we had a talented group,” the seventh-year head man said. “It’s very difficult to win. It’s a credit to the kids, and the coaches, and the program, to hang in there every week and persevere and find a way to reach our goal, which is to go 1-0 every week.” Berlin earned the No. 1 seed in the CIAC Class M state playoffs, which kicked off Tuesday, after press time. The host Redcoats faced No. 8 Hillhouse (7-3) that night. Berlin, the defending Class M state champ, was optimistic heading into the postseason. “We’re going to do the same old thing, and just get more violent and more nasty, and just get ready for the first game,” said Dellaquila. “It’s getting late in the year,” said DeLorenzo. “We’ve got to stick to our rules, stick to our assignments, and we should be good to go.” Although confident about

Veleas, Manzo weigh in on field controversy By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen

Friends of Berlin Baseball would like Sage Park’s Zipadelli Field to be a baseball-only venue. The group contends that youth soccer games played at the field have left it in disastrous shape and unsafe for baseball. Other baseball-minded folks in town feel the same. Zipadelli Field, a lighted field, is the home of the Berlin High School and Post 68 American Legion baseball teams. Post 68 General Manager Rob

Manzo said he has nothing against soccer. He played soccer, and is a fan of the sport. However, he would like Zipadelli Field to be used only for baseball, if at all possible. “I think it would be nice to have a baseball-only field. Having a showcase field for our programs is something that every town tries to do,” said Manzo. “If we could come up with some kind of compromise, where the field is not being played on as much, it would be great,” he added. “I do understand playing under the lights is something special the kids get to do in any sport — and this is about the kids. There has to be something we can do as a town to accommodate

both sports and keep the costs down.” When it comes to Zipadelli Field, BHS baseball coach Leo Veleas sees no room for compromise. “It’s a baseball field. Let’s use it for baseball,” he said. Zipadelli and Percival fields are the only diamonds in town where high school and American Legion baseball teams can compete. Soccer, on the other hand, can be played in several spots around Berlin. “There’s a whole bunch of soccer fields,” Veleas said. “Go play there.” In the 90s, when lights were installed at Zipadelli Field, Veleas said he was told by the Parks and Recreation Commission that soccer games

would be played there for one year. After that, soccer games would move to a different location. It didn’t work out that way. “They never left,” said Veleas. The veteran coach checked out Zipadelli Field recently, and didn’t like what he saw. “The outfield is trashed. It gets worn out. It gets too much play,” said Veleas, who pointed out that taxpayers help foot the bill when repairs are done to the field. The money issue is not what most concerns Veleas, however; he fears a baseball player is going to get seriously injured at Zipadelli field. “It gets to the point it’s becoming a safe-

Post 68 looking for a few good men Registration to be held Dec. 8 By Nick Carroll The Berlin Citizen Sure, winter is right around the corner. But Rob Manzo has summer on his mind. Manzo, general manager of the Berlin Post 68 American Legion baseball program, opted to hold registration early this year, in December — some seven

months before the start of the 2011 Legion season. One registration session was held Dec. 1. Another will take place Wednesday, Dec. 8, 6 to 8 p.m., at Percival Field. Senior American Legion baseball is open to players born on or after January 1, 1992. Junior American Legion baseball is open to players born on or after January 1, 1994.

This coming season will be Berlin’s second with a Junior Legion team. Manzo said the early registration is “geared more towards the Junior program,” which had as few as 12 kids in uniform last summer. “We’re still trying to grow the Junior program,” said Manzo. “A lot of Junior programs pick their teams in the winter time. We’re trying to keep up with the competition. That’s the main reason.” The numbers for Post 68’s Senior team have remained steady over the years. That’s mainly due to the fact that players that age have few other summer baseball options. However, younger players, Junior Legion age, have several choices in which to play during the summer. “There’s a lot of competition at that 13- to 15-year-old age,” said Manzo. “We’re trying to keep kids in town with a competitive program.” For more information about Berlin Legion, contact Rob Manzo at Rob_Manzo@att.net.

She rehearses most of every Sunday and some on Saturdays. She’s in every scene in the first act of the

Nutcracker and in most of the second act. Yet, Margot does well in school and successfully manages these two parts of her life. “My Mom says I have to keep my grades up…but

when I dance I push all that out of my mind and just let go,” Margot said. Sixty area children, along with 14 professional dancers from New York City, are in the production which is under the direction of Roman Baca. Another youngster from Berlin, Anastasia Houle, has a role as a baby mouse. BTC describes the production as “magical and classic.” This is the ninth year it has offered the holiday show with music by Tchaikovsky. Performances are scheduled for Dec. 16 through Dec. 19 at the Carol Autorino Center for the

Louis Houle and daughter Anastasia Houle, of Berlin, pose with Margot Paul during a rehearsal last weekend. In the Nutcracker, Houle plays a “party scene” parent. Anastasia plays one of the Baby Mice in the battle scene. She is a thirdgrade student at St. Paul School.

Arts and Humanities on the Saint Joseph College Campus. For more information and tickets go to dancebtc.org. “This is an exciting opportunity for me to create an all new, yet classic production and choreography, for BTC,” Baca said. The artistic director is a Marine war veteran, who was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq, in 2005. From that experience, Baca strives to link classical and contemporary ballet with personal experience and human emotion. Baca graduated from the Nutmeg Conservatory and majored in dance at the University of New Mexico. A Connecticut Veteran Wartime Medal awardee, he also is artistic director of Exit 12 Dance Company of New York City; a professional dance company that performs throughout the northeast. Margot said Baca is “a great dance teacher…I can talk to him.” His Marine background is evident as he works with his troupe, she

said. “He tells us to take orders and apply the orders to what you are doing.” Margot was in previous BCT Nutcracker productions with roles of a soldier and a party scene girl. The director’s wife, Lisa Fitzgerald is Margot’s mentor and a former “Clara.” Fitzgerald coaches Margot on ways to portray her character. Clara is a young girl experiencing her first love with a young man, who she meets at a Christmas Eve party and he will soon go off to war, Margot explained. As for her future in dance, Margot said she’d like to play the Sugarplum Fairy one day and perhaps go on to become a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theater. As for school, she plans to attend the Greater Hartford Academy for the Arts for part of the day during high school. BTC supports children throughout the greater Hartford area and will have the Marine Toys for Tots collec-

We are asking everyone to help us spread the word to send care packages to the troops for the holidays. ” He continued, “The items and the money to ship them come from generous people across America. It is amazing to see the way people step up for their troops. If you would like to provide items for future care boxes or make a donation to help pay to ship the goods, you can find everything you need to know posted on SupportOurTroops.Org, such as the type of things the troops are asking for, and where and how to send them to us. Join us in sending a little bit of love and appreciation their way with a Christmas Care Package to boost their spirits and their hearts during the holidays. From Major Earnest, serving in Iraq: “Thank you, thank you, and thank you so very much for the packages we received. We, the 2025th Transportation Company want you to know how appre-

ciative we are for all that was sent to us yesterday. It is a hard road for us over here especially during the holiday season. Being away from our families is really tough but with the care boxes it made everyone feel like getting into the holiday spirit. From the 2025th Transportation Company Family we would like to extend our heartfelt ‘thank you’ for all of your support. We will always have a place in our heart for you.” It’s a gesture that means more than you know. So come on. Let’s get to it!

The Town Council voted on several new agenda items at its Nov. 23 meeting. The agenda, however, did not include the hiring of a new head golf pro at Timberlin Golf Course. Many residents who attended the meeting, with the expectation that the golf position would be discussed, were disappointed. The council voted to add the Civil War Monument Refurbishment Project to the town’s Capital Improvement Plan. The Veterans Commission had previously requested funds to fix cracks, chips and worn-down lettering on the monument which was built in 1871. Located in East Berlin, at the intersection of Berlin and Main Streets, the monument includes the names of over a dozen local Civil War veterans. The cost of the Monument Refurbishment Project is “not to exceed $16,000”, and Town Manager Denise McNair has been authorized to apply for a Local Capital Improvement Program to reimburse the town for the cost of the project. LoCIP is the state’s that “distributes funds

salt off the roads in the spring. In other business, the Council appointed a five member Plan of Conservation and Development Advisory Committee in order to update the Town’s 2003 POCD. Members of the committee will be: Deputy Mayor Stephen Morelli, Planning & Zoning Chairman Bruce Moore, Vice Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals Bob Nieman, Chair of the Conservation Commission Michael DeLorenzo, and Vice Chairman of the Economic Development Commission Ed Egazarian. When the POCD was last updated in 2003, the advisory committee had seven members and included members of the public in addition to members of other Commis-

to municipalities to reimburse the cost of eligible local capital improvement projects”. The council also approved the purchase of treated road salt for snow and ice control from State’s low bidder, Cargill Deicing Technology. This initial purchase of over 1,000 tons of the treated salt will cost $80,000. Public Works Director, Art Simonian, confirmed that last year the town used over 2,000 tons of the product, so another purchase will likely be necessary before the winter is over. Use of the ClearLane treated salt product has proven successful over the past few years, according to McNair. Mayor Adam Salina added that using the treated salt has reduced the need to have street sweepers clean

Many recognized for excellence at BOE event

The Board of Education held its annual meeting Nov. 22, at McGee Middle School which included awards presentations to staff, students and volunteers as well as recognition of board members. The event was held in conjunction with American Education Week and recognized the following individuals. Newly elected board members Julie Erickson, Kathleen O’Donnell-Moss, John Richards and Cynthia Kobus were congratulated. Erickson and O’Donnell-Moss were re-elected to three year terms. Richards, a former member, also was elected to a three-year term. Kobus will serve a two-year term, the remainder of Christopher Puzio’s term after his resignation. Certificate of Appreciation Awards were given to Puzio and another former board member, Michelle Hartel. The administration and staff selected ten students to

receive the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents “Certificate of Excellence” award. Students are selected for this based on criteria such as: demonstrated leadership to the school community, community service and service to others, and academic prowess relative to ability. The awards were given to: fifth-graders Cameron Michalek and William Salwocki from Griswold Elementary School; Julia Sisti and Billy Hagmeier from Hubbard Elementary School; Anna Woodin and Nicholas Sznaj from Willard Elementary School; eighth-graders Sarah Hoag and Suleyman Bozal from McGee Middle School; and seniors Jaclyn Rubin and Scott Zagorski from Berlin High School. Each student received a special CAPSS diploma and a book store gift card. Introduced were the 2011 Building Teachers of the Year and the District

Members of the support staff also received recognition awards for outstanding performance and dedication to the district’s students, staff, and parents. Recipients were: Patricia Tedesco, Griswold; Marylou Caputo, Hubbard; Alisha Bouchard, Willard; Brian Mirizzi, McGee; Karen Bergstrom, Berlin High School; and Doreen Guy for the Board of

Education Central Office. The “Friend of Berlin Schools” awards are awarded annually to volunteers nominated by each school’s administration, PTO or community, and selected by the Board of Education for their outstanding contributions of time and energy to helping children and schools. This year’s recipients are Leanne Kozon, Griswold; Holly Comstock, Hubbard; Allison Rutledge, Willard; Helen deRito, McGee; and Gus and Amy Viteri for Berlin High. They will be presented with a certificate of appreciation and recognition along with a book store gift card. Scott Skates, chairman of “The Gift of Words” project, for the Kensington-Berlin Sunrise Rotary Club announced the club’s donation of dictionaries to all third grade students as part of the National Rotary Dictionary Project. This is the fourth year the Rotary Club has provided dictionaries to each third grade student.

McNair closed the meeting by applauding Town Clerk Kate Wall who was formally installed as President of the New England Region of Town Clerks Association at its annual convention last week. “I think it’s a real feather in the town’s hat. Kate has worked very hard,” McNair said.
