letter from the EDITOR

HELLO &

DAUN LESS This time of year is always so beautiful in the States. I love watching as nature comes to life. I love the beautiful weather. One of my favorite things to do during this time of year is to go on adventures in the outdoors. I love to explore and see the beauty of God’s creation. I love getting to breathe in the fresh air, feel the warmth of the sun and relax knowing that God is in control. It is a good reminder for all of us to take a minute to relax and breathe. To remember that we do not have to do everything on our own. We have a loving, Heavenly Father who takes great care of us, when we let him. #bringingbeautifulback #dauntlessstrong XOXO

What ’s In Your Garden? By: Arnette German

17

A

ny seasoned Gardener will state there lies a process in obtaining an attractive and fertile garden. Gardening isn’t just

throwing seeds in the dirt. There’s the requirement of sowing seeds in the proper environment, season and soil to ensure a bountiful harvest. In addition to tilling, fertilizing and watering the soil as well. More so, gardening is accompanied with the occasional task of snatching up those pesky, ugly weeds that sprout up. However, the mention of pruning will be discussed. Pruning, “to trim (a tree, shrub or bush) by cutting away dead or overgrown branches or stems, especially to increase fruitfulness and growth,” is an inevitable process of growth and one of the keys that facilitates in the overall production of your garden which permits me to ask, “have you been cut yet…what’s in your garden”? Often times, due to not “clipping” away familiarity, comfortableness, contentment, fear, unforgiveness, bitterness, pride, entitlement, mediocrity, procrastination, childhood/favorite besties, the norm, mundane habits, disappointment, lack of trusting and/or loving others and ___________________________, (feel free to fill in the blank and add to the list if need be), you’re stunting your growth which is one reason why your gathering yielded nothing profitable in return. “Playing it safe” and remaining the same hinders expansion severely. More so, “planting” yourself in the wrong environment or even being in the right environment but too soon still deems you are “out of season” in which nothing good or at all will produce. Yes, your gift makes room for you but timing is everything. In this case, “timing” is the season. But when bad “timing” is coupled with no removal of the detrimental practices, way of thinking, actions and/or people thwarting your growth-it is a guarantee you and your gifts are not growing. Not in a good way. I mean it was previously stated that weeds grow too-right? Again, I ask but differently, “what is in your garden? You haven’t cut that yet? Now, you know you should’ve already cut that”. I get it. The first time the trimming started, it didn’t feel good. It. Hurt. The ending of that friendship or that relationship that you just knew was air tight...letting that go…took the life out of you causing you to experience an avalanche of emotions that seemingly was the proprietor of a snowball effect of other things to crash down quickly too. Then the continual nudging of loved ones wanting you to get back out there. Though you’re adamantly saying you’re not ready; however, your “not being ready” is simply fear. Fear is the “weed” that has overtaken your heart and mind-blocking the growth by fertilizing your mind with being content being alone because at least you can hold on to you. You know you. You can wholeheartedly love you. You can trust you and effortlessly place faith in you because you won’t disappoint and/or hurt you. Again, I get it. Better yet, I understand. No one voluntarily subjects himself/herself to pain. Nor sets out to stay nor reside in it. Trust…it’s dutifully noted. But, did you know, the beauty of the blessing in letting go is that you survived the hardest part. Starting the pruning process. Even though catastrophic, the next step in being cut is that you now bring to an end to all else that is or has been feeding the wrong and unwanted parts sprouting up and taking over you! Understand that pruning allows the wow factor in gardening to take center stage….the reaping of an “attractive, fertile and profitable” harvest. Why not let it be you? Why not experience natural highs and joys from your yielding by stripping yourself from all dead growth and making sound investments in yourself by burying yourself, your gifts and talents in the right time…the right season and environment? You owe it to yourself to be cut. Therefore, tenderheartedly, I’m re-asking my initial question, “have you been cut yet...what is in your garden”?

10 Summer Trends 2022 By Karissa Hagemeister

Well ladies, summer is literally right around the corner. Many of us will be

exchanging our pants for shorts, changing out our sneakers for sandals and trying to wear tank tops whenever possible. Summertime is full of wonderful activities, maybe a vacation or two and hopefully a chance to get away from life as normal. I want to give you some fun summer trends you will be seeing and hopefully you will get to partake in a few of them. Many of these you may have seen 20-30 years ago in the 90’s. They have made a comeback. 1. Platform heels Many of you remember platform sandals and flip-flops and any kind of shoe that were popular throughout the 90’s and even into some of the early 2000’s. Well ladies, they are back again. You probably have already seen them in your stores because they have invaded the shoe isles everywhere. Let us know if this trend is some thing that you love or hate. For me, I used to enjoy wearing them when I was younger but now as an adult, I don’t see myself participating in this trend so much. I am already 5 foot 10, so I’m quite taller than a lot of people as it is. I don’t need any extra inches added on unless I am wearing cute heels. Platform heels just remind me of my middle school and high school days. 2. Bring on the sparkle Another trend that you’ll be seeing this summer is a lot more sparkle added to outfits. I think after all of the hard times in the darkness that we’ve seen these past few years, people are wanting to add a little bit of life and sparkle back into the day and into their routine. What better way to do so than adding a little sparkle to your wardrobe? You will see a lot of things such as sequin skirts and dresses pretty much anything that can be sequined or sparkled will be. I do love sparkle and I do love sequins but I don’t recommend overdoing it. You know - just one item of sequin or sparkly to your outfit is all you need. We don’t need all of it to be consumed with sparkles. You will definitely see me sparkling this summer.

3. Beaded Up This next trend I’ve already started seeing a bunch of is beaded purses and beaded little bags. I believe I even seen them at target the other day. To me, this is more childish than anything. It is not really a trend for women. I’m in my 30s but I don’t see myself buying or carrying around a beaded purse. Beaded is cute but it is considered to be more of a young young girls type of accessory. I’m sure you’ll be seeing older women and women of all ages wearing these and carrying them around. Some things are meant to stay with the youth and not to be made for women and adults and I really feel like this is one of those trends. It’s meant for just the young kids, so we will let them enjoy it. 5. Bright colors Bright colors are always a pretty good trend for summer. You will often see them all over the place. But I think going along with the sequins and sparkles, you’ll probably see a lot more of bright colors this summer as people are just ready to get rid of the sadness and the darkness and everything that they faced these past few years. Don’t be afraid to embrace the bright colors. Have fun with them mix and match them. Several colors look really great with other colors and can make really cute outfits. If you want styling advice always feel free to reach out to me on my Instagram - which I’ll put below. 6. Crop Top Comeback Crop tops are back in all kinds of styles and ways. You will see them everywhere. You’ll see people wearing them everywhere. I’m not gonna talk to you much about crop tops because I kind of have an unpopular opinion about them but if you’re comfortable wearing them, do wear them. Enjoy them. I personally love crop tops on myself especially during the summertime because it keeps me a little bit cooler. They are a fun different way to express your style. 7. Coastal Chic This next trend is kind of fun. Picture linen shorts and a sweater that is white and navy blue lined. That is what a coastal chic is. Just imagine what the people that are living in the northern states of the US by the by the water wear. These things that they would normally wear are considered coastal style. This is becoming a popular trend for the summer. I’ve never actually dressed this way but I might give it a try this year. 41

8. Mini Skirts Mini skirts are also making a come back. This was popular when I was in high school and like they say fashion repeats itself every couple decades so here we are wearing miniskirts again. I personally feel like mini skirts are not the best idea for anybody not even for young girls, just because we all know that men have a very vivid imagination. With mini skirts not much is left to the imagination and when we don’t leave much for the imagination it can cause quite a bit of problems. I think there’s enough problems in the world that we don’t need to create more by the way that we dress. I just want to encourage you to to approach trends with some modesty. The world does not really care about that but I know that in the word it says that if you cause a man to lust or to stumble, it it’s just as much your sin as it is his. So let’s try to be women of God and just try to be modest with the things that we decide to wear. Let’s be examples to our children and grandchildren. 9. All White Wearing an all white outfit has become a really popular trend this year. White jeans have always been popular for the summertime. I guess we all just need a little more light so many women are wearing all white everything. While there’s nothing wrong with that, I probably will not do that much or at all. Just because I am one of those people that if I wear white it’s probably going to get dirty. I don’t know how but it might happen. I do love the look of all white. I think it’s really beautiful and clean and simple. But it’s some thing that’s hard for me to personally wear. 10. Cut out Bathing Suits This last trend relates to bathing suits. If you haven’t noticed there are a lot of fun different styles of bathing suits coming out yes they are still considered one piece or bikinis, but the way that they have been fashioned is fun and different. I definitely am loving the different cut outs and designs that I’ve been seeing because it’s a break from the normal. It makes makes it a little bit more fun when shopping for bathing suits. If you have any beach vacation, swimming pool, or lake visits or anything that you are going to be doing for the summer, I definitely encourage you to to find one of these fun bathing suits and give it a try. I hope you enjoy learning about these some summer trends for 2022. Let us know which ones you want to do and which ones you aren’t too fond of. Have fun with the trends, make them your own and just enjoy your summer. 42

Perception Vs. Reality by Lauren Dennison If I told you it takes two to equal one, you’d likely tell me it’s not a mathematical equation that makes much sense! But let me explain.

My mother was an artist. When I was a child, she would point out objects and ask me what I saw. I recall vividly an impatient conversation I had with her regarding a tree. She asked, “What color are the tree trunks in our yard?” With all of the confidence of a mature 10-year-old, I answered, “Brown, of course.” She lovingly directed me to look again. I replied impatiently, “Brown! Can’t you see they are brown?” She gently pointed out that if you looked closely, they were not brown but a rich, deep gray. My mother taught me to see the natural beauty of this world with my eyes, not with what I perceived in my mind.

There are a lot of lessons in that encounter with a tree trunk, but perhaps the most important one is to look at life more closely. See things as they are, not as how we assume they are. We must overcome our perception in order to see reality. I believe there is timing involved in the revealing of reality. People say that God doesn’t give us more than we can handle, but I don’t think that is accurate. Rather, life doesn’t give us more than God can handle. Sometimes it is His gentle peeling back of our perceptions that reveals God’s truth. One way He does this is through nature.

God’s creation speaks to His people. Nature witnesses to the character and intent of our Creator. Unfortunately, many worship the creation, missing God Himself – the passion and depth of genius that He holds. But it’s always God communicating with us through His creation. No one knows us as intimately as Him. Some years back I experienced a devasting loss. I spiraled, becoming numb and unresponsive. I didn’t know how to begin life again. I had no emotional strength nor direction, unable to give or receive. I was lost to myself and to those who loved me. One morning, as I left the emptiness of my once full home to return to work, something colorful caught my eye. A few blue flowers sat tucked away in some dense green leaves. It was soothing to see new life. The flowers were a bright spot in a dark, unwanted season of my life. Those little pops of color felt somehow encouraging. Curious to know what they were and how they got here, I inquired with my neighbor. He said the flowers were just weeds, and he had weed killer if I wanted some. But I had had enough of death. Weeds have a negative reputation as unwanted pests. But those flowers on my walkway were a gift I wasn’t going to refuse. I felt I had something to look forward to again – at least for that short walk to my car. Soon the blue flowers grew into a blanket, covering the once drab dirt and stones along my walkway. As silly as it sounds, the weeds brought a smile back to my face. These things of beauty

didn’t ask anything of me; they were simply present for me every morning. I loved seeing their blue hue amongst the most beautiful deep green leaves. They flourished under the warmth of the sun, and their simple beauty helped me feel the warmth of the Son once again. How funny that my connection with God was rekindled by a simple flowering weed! I began to take solace gazing at them while sipping my morning coffee each day. But as time passed, the mornings began to feel colder. Winter was approaching, and soon the flowers would disappear. One day after a few weeks, I had to hunt just to find a few bright pops of color. My familiar morning greeting card was slowly disappearing, and I felt that familiar sting of loss settling over me once again. I was angry at myself. It all seemed so silly, and I felt stupid. They were just useless weeds that grew wild in my yard, but I was heartbroken. I yelled out loud in frustration, grieving yet another loss in my life.

But, in that moment of anger and frustration with myself, tears started to fill my eyes as I stared at the weeds. My perception had been that the beauty, the gift, was in those little blue flowers that winter came to steal. But how could I have missed what was in front of me all this time? The leaves! They were shaped like hearts! The blue flowers were nestled amongst deep green hearts. The leaves were the support, the richness, that made the flowers pop and capture my attention. Without those heart-shaped leaves, the flowers would have no support or protection while waiting for the warmth of the morning sun. It is the heart of Jesus that has felt every imaginable pain that tries to overtake our lives. It is His heart that always brings us back to His path that life tries to knock us from. God knows how to guide us to His plans for us. There is always a path to restoration, and His heart desires to draw us in. I failed to see the heart-shaped leaves each day not because of poor vision, but due to the depth of personal pain and loss. The brightness of the flowers caught my attention, but the eventual revelation of the shape of the leaves was my graduation day. In those early days, I could not find direction, so I clung to what caught my attention. But what I really needed was to cling to God’s heart. Even when we feel we have no vision for the next moment, or when we are lost and cannot see a path back, God provides for us. The Bible reminds us to trust in the Lord with all of our hearts, and to lean not on our own understanding. God’s love is a place of rest and renewal.

I relied so deeply on the brightness of the flowers, their cheeriness and beauty – but when those flowers disappeared, they revealed what had supported them (and me) all along: the heart-shaped leaves. In the same way, the heart of our Creator was holding me. No matter how lost, numb, or hopeless we may feel, no matter how empty or dark it seems, God will get our attention. He’ll draw us back to His path for our lives. The next spring, I finally saw how those heart-shaped leaves unfold. They unfurl as two halves that mature and join to form one heart – thus proving it takes two to equal one.
