mplantado numa antiga fortaleza, construída para defender o Funchal dos ataques dos piratas, o Molhe serve hoje um propósito de lazer. A qualquer hora do dia, em qualquer altura do ano, a vista a daqui tem um relevo especial. Se for à noite, o panorama é ainda mais mágico. É por isso que o nome 360° não foi escolhido por acaso. Representa a vista a toda a volta da sala principal do restaurante. De um lado a cidade. Do outro o mar. Molhe 360° é um nome que traduz a identidade do espaço, que complementa o Terrace Lounge, um piso abaixo, aberto no início do ano.

Mas este é um restaurante pensado para ser uma experiência. Um jantar aqui é um desafio ao paladar, à experiência do casamento entre os vinhos e a comida, onde o Chefe Miguel Laffan assume que cozinha o que gosta. A sua cozinha tem uma base clássica francesa, mas tem sofrido inspirações espanholas e também portuguesas.

Pelo meio são adicionados alguns ingredientes regionais sempre tendo como horizonte o verdadeiro sabor de cada alimento.

Durante um mês o menu de degustação pode ser experimentado.

As sugestões à la carte mudam em cada estação. O desejo de crescer e solidificar um restaurante que nasceu para ser diferente é partilhado pela equipa, toda ela jovem.

A decoração do espaço é da premiada decoradora madeirense Nini Andrade Silva.

São cores quentes em linhas suaves, numa atmosfera de conforto que completa a experiência. É um ambiente contemporâneo montado num espaço do século XVII, recuperado com base num projecto do conceituado arquitecto Carlos Guimarães.

UM LUGAR DE SENSAÇÕES A Place full of Sensations Na inauguração o Molhe recebeu a visita de figuras ilustres.

Aquando do espaço a honra coube ao presidente do Governo Regional da Madeira. A abertura do espaço 360° foi apadrinhada pela conhecida apresentadora de televisão Bárbara Guimarães.

O espaço resulta de uma parceria entre a SIRAM Tourism e o Grupo Lágrimas, sendo este último responsável pela exploração e por toda a componente operacional.

nserted within an ancient fortress built to defend Funchal from pirate attacks, today Molhe defends something entirely different – a unique gourmet leisure experience.

Whatever the time of day or night, whatever the time of year, the breathtaking view from here takes on a special relevance at night when the panoramic view is even more magical.

And it wasn’t by chance that one of its restaurants was called 360º, for it offers a superb panoramic view of the Bay of Funchal which can be seen from anywhere in the main restaurant dining room. On one side you have the city, on the other the sea. Molhe 360º perfectly sums up what this restaurant is all about, and compliments the Terrace Lounge downstairs to a tee which has been open since the beginning of the year.

But this restaurant is not just about dining out; it was conceived to be an experience. Dining here is a challenge for the taste buds, offering the perfect marriage between wine and food, a place where Chef Miguel Laffan only cooks what he loves with a cuisine that has a classical French base with an inspirational touch of Spanish and Portuguese influences.

To this are added some regional ingredients with a view to giving each dish a distinctive and unique flavour.

During one month the gourmet menu can be sampled with à la carte suggestions varying according to the season and the desire to develop and consolidate a restaurant that was created to be different is shared by its entire youthful team.

Molhe foi, durante Novembro, o restaurante do mês da Paixão do Vinho, loja de vinhos e distribuidora de marcas portuguesas de qualidade.

A ideia foi proporcionar, durante todo o mês, aos clientes do Molhe, Restaurant, Terrace Lounge & Events e 360º o acesso a alguns dos melhores vinhos, cuidadosamente seleccionados pelo enólogo Francisco Albuquerque. Este processo associou também a componente gastronómica, conciliandoa com as outras artes já presentes nestes espaços (pintura, escultura e arquitectura).

O jantar de apresentação da parceria contou com a participação de enólogos convidados e juntou cerca de 60 amantes da Paixão do Vinho, o que foi um enorme sucesso e de grande projecção para o nosso segmento de mercado.

Throughout November Molhe was the chosen ‘Restaurant of the Month’

by The Passion of Wine (Paixão do Vinho) - a wine shop and quality Portuguese wine distributor.

The idea was to share with Molhe customers of both its restaurants, The Terrace Lounge & Events and 360º, some of the best wines during the month, all carefully selected by wine expert Francisco Albuquerque. This promotion also included a culinary component, blending these initiatives with other arts already on display at the establishment (painting, sculpture and architecture).

The partnership presentation dinner included the participation of invited wine producers and experts and around 60 Paixão do Vinho lovers in an event that proved to be a runaway success, giving an enormous publicity boost to our segment of the market.

by award-winning Madeira interior designer Nini Andrade Silva who, together with well-known architect Carlos Guimarães, has created a comfortable yet contemporary atmosphere within a refurbished 17th century building, to round off the experience.

On the night it was inaugurated Molhe welcomed a list of illustrious guests that read like a Who’s Who, although the official honours were reserved for the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, while the opening night gala for 360º was hosted by famous television presenter Barbara Guimaraes.

The restaurant is the result of a partnership between SIRAM Tourism and the Lagrimas Group, the latter which actually manages and runs the establishment.

HOTEL RESIDENCE: O HISTÓRICO E O MODERNO Hotel Residence: The Historic and the Modern

Hotel Residence Conde Carvalhal O é um projecto integrado na área do turismo residencial sénior, combinando o alojamento hoteleiro de curta e média/longa duração com a oferta de serviços assistenciais de saúde e bem-estar. Inaugurado em Novembro, é composto por uma unidade hoteleira de 18 quartos e serviços de ocupação de tempo e lazer.

A aposta tem por base a crescente vocação turística da Região Autónoma da Madeira para o turismo sénior, aliada à tendência dos tempos modernos, designadamente o envelhecimento da população mundial, o crescente consumo de actos de saúde, o rendimento disponível, o crescimento de hábitos de prevenção, a atenção crescente aos cuidados de saúde, as exigências de conforto no consumo de técnicas de saúde e as exigências de nível de serviço e rapidez em todo o processo de atendimento, diagnóstico e terapias adequadas, provocaram grandes oportunidades para o mercado do turismo sénior.

Em 2005 a SIRAM Tourism apostou na área da Saúde e Bem-estar reforçando e consolidando a qualidade e excelência da sua oferta de

serviços nas áreas do turismo residencial, imobiliária turística, e hotelaria. Para a implementação da sua visão, adquiriu uma quinta tradicional na Rua Conde Carvalhal, no Funchal, onde desenvolveu este projecto.

O Hotel Residence foi concebido para receber pessoas que, embora autónomas, preferem morar ou passar alguns dias num local acolhedor, onde podem contar com todos os apoios médicos, de enfermagem e de uma equipa dedicada a uma unidade residencial de dimensão acolhedora e atendimento personalizado.

A propriedade situa-se a 1 km do centro da cidade (Câmara Municipal e Palácio da Justiça), integrando-se numa zona de quintas tradicionais madeirenses. Possui uma área de 3.000 m2. O projecto de intervenção, da autoria do arquitecto Paulo David, resulta na integração na propriedade de um edifício contemporâneo. É um espaço de conforto e tranquilidade, com uma fabulosa vista a partir dos quartos. Conta ainda com magníficos jardins, ou mesmo uma capela que permitem um recolhimento acompanhado de um convívio sereno e revigorante.

he Hotel Residence Conde Carvalhal is a project integrated into the senior residential tourism sector, combining hotel accommodation for short and medium-term stay backed up by health assistance and wellness services. Inaugurated in November, it is made up of an 18-room hotel and leisure unit.

The idea behind this investment is growing tourism within the senior citizen sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira aimed at catering for the ‘silver’ tourist, which fits in with the current tendency worldwide for an affluent, yet ageing population, growing consumption of health-related services and products, increased pensioner disposable income, a greater perception of health problem prevention, a growing attention to health care, the demands of comfort in health service consumption and for rapid quality services throughout the entire diagnostic and treatment process, all of which add up to considerable opportunities for the senior citizen tourist market.

In 2005 SIRAM Tourism invested in the Health and Wellness sector reinforcing and consolidating the quality and excellence of its range of services in the residential tourism, tourism real estate and hotel sectors.

In order to crystallize its vision SIRAM purchased a traditional Madeira farm estate or ‘quinta’ on Funchal’s Rua Conde Carvalhal, where it has developed this project.

específico, e a sua vivência enquanto espaço, numa relação próxima com a massa arbórea e, num plano mais distante, com o “anfiteatro” sobre o qual se desenha a cidade que contempla o mar.

Sendo um objecto de forte presença e pelas suas características espaciais, o edifício principal existente abriga os espaços que se referem à ambiência social do complexo como são a sala de refeições, salas de leitura, salas de convívio, bem como gabinetes de apoio, a enfermeiros e médicos, e cozinha.

O novo corpo abarca em si a recepção e todos os quartos do Hotel Residence. A sua forma desenha um pátio de geometria triangular e carácter mais intimista, que introduz luz natural nos espaços de acesso aos quartos.

which was developed between the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, is a notable piece of territorial heritage that epitomises a style of living so peculiar to turn-ofthe-century Funchal.

The Quinta is essentially made up of a main mansion house of considerable proportions surrounded by several smaller houses, pleasure follies, farm outhouses, water tanks and even gardens with a wood with some hundred year old trees, all contained within some very fine walls that make up the boundary of the property and other walls that help mark out the estate and shield off the house from the road in front, all of which are so characteristic of traditional Funchal farm estates and which today represents a valuable piece of Funchal heritage.

A new building has arisen adjoining the main house of the old Quinta, one that is not intrusive but blends harmoniously with the existing building, creating an interstitial area which defines the entrance of the Hotel Residence. The formal way that these two buildings, from two distinct periods, have been blended together confers a feeling of spatial permeability in their relationship, stimulating a dialogue with regards to form within a very specific programmatic content, while its spatiality identifies closely with the clump of trees and beyond with the semi-circular-shaped Bay of Funchal further in the distance, a bay into which a city that contemplates the sea has developed.

Maintaining a dominant presence because of its large spatial characteristics, the existing main house lends a social environment to the rooms within the complex, such as the dining room, reading rooms, sitting rooms as well as the auxiliary offices, doctors and nurses’ surgeries, and kitchen.

The new corpus of the hotel houses the reception area and all of the Hotel Residence rooms. Its form is laid out in an intimate triangular shaped patio which lets natural light into the corridors serving the rooms.

The Hotel Residence was designed to accommodate people who, despite being independent, prefer to live or spend some days in a warm and welcoming environment where they can rely on a full range of medical services and complete nursing assistance from the unit’s own dedicated team of staff specifically trained to offer a warm and personalized residential service.

The property is located on a 3,000m2 site 1km from Funchal city centre (Municipal City Hall and Justice Offices) and is integrated within an area of traditional Madeira farmhouse estates. The project, developed by architect Paulo David, has integrated a contemporary development within the overall late 19th century property.

It represents a relaxing and comfortable building boasting fabulous views from all of the rooms. It also features magnificent gardens and even a chapel which together with the hotel unit offer a serenely welcoming yet invigorating place to be with others.

A PARTIR DO CÉU Seen from the heavens

Augusto já perdeu a conta Cdasarlos vezes que sobrevoou a Madeira.

São 12 anos de experiência que lhe permitem conhecer como poucos cada recanto destas ilhas, a partir do céu. É um dos pilotos da Heliatlantis, companhia que opera um helicóptero destinado a viagens turísticas e de táxi aéreo nas ilhas da Madeira e Porto Santo, desde 2002. Recentemente a empresa renovou os seus produtos, reforçando a aposta na qualidade, com uma renovação completa do helicóptero, no qual foi melhorada a apresentação e o conforto.

A intenção é fazer de um passeio aéreo sobre a Madeira, de helicóptero, uma experiência única, que não se esgote na magnífica paisagem que é possível observar, lá do alto, mas também na sensação em si de estar a bordo de um transporte que pode simplesmente parar no ar.

A experiência dos pilotos, ex-oficiais da Força Aérea Portuguesa dá garantias de segurança. A comodidade do helicóptero faz o resto para uma viagem diferente que, tendo como ponto de partida o Heliporto no Porto do Funchal, nos leva a cada um dos recantos da ilha, seja numa viagem previamente definida ou numa solução à medida, pensada especificamente para um pequeno grupo de pessoas ou uma situação.

E a primeira impressão da viagem, qualquer que seja o percurso, é de uma magnífica vista sobre a baía do Funchal. É um panorama belo, das casas que se encavalitam encosta acima, até darem lugar às imponentes montanhas que rodeiam a cidade. Do ar a cidade salta à vista pela luminosidade e pela harmonia com que as casas sobem encosta acima.

A orografia da ilha, com várias montanhas acima dos mil metros, vales apertados e relevos acidentados torna as vistas aéreas únicas e mesmo uma oportunidade ímpar de observar detalhes que de outra forma seria impossível detectar. A passagem pelas montanhas é a se-

gunda fase da viagem. Não deixa de ser impresssionante pairar a 1.800 metros de altitude, mais ou menos ao mesmo nível do que o Pico Ruivo, a maior elevação da Madeira, com 1.861 metros. O espectáculo das nuvens a mergulhar montanha abaixo antes de evaporarem é uma oportunidade única. Pela versatilidade com que se movimenta por estes espaços apertados o helicóptero permite um panorama de outro modo quase impossível de ver.

Quando atravessamos um desses vales, o da Encumeada, que divide a cordilheira montanhosa que separa a Madeira nas costas norte e sul entramos na costa norte. A Encumeada é a porta de entrada em São Vicente. A partir daí sobrevoa-

The experienced pilots – former Portuguese Air Force officials – ensure absolute confidence and safety. The comfort offered by the helicopter adds the finishing touch to this unforgettable experience. The helicopter trip starts at the Heliport at the Port of Funchal, and heads for any of the island’s most remote corners, be it on a standard route or a bespoke itinerary specifically created for a small group of peopleorsuitedtoaparticularoccasion.

The first impression of the trip, whatever the scheduled route, is provided by the magnificent view over the bay of Funchal. It affords a magnificent panorama, with its houses and villas climbing the steep slopes that lead up to the imposing mountains that embrace the city. From high up in the air, one is struck by the luminosity of the city and the harmony of its homes clingingtotheslopes.

The island’s topography, with several mountains reaching over one thousand metres in height, narrow valleys and its irregular terrain, makes the views afforded from the helicopter unique and even an unrivalled means of observing features that would otherwise be impossible to detect. The passage through the mountains is the second part of the trip. Hovering at 1,800 metres – more or less the same height as Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest mountain at 1,861 metres – is a breathtaking experience. The vision offered of

From there, one can then fly over other parts of the north coast, such as Seixal or Porto Moniz, nestling on small parcels of gentler terrain, but encroached upon by dizzyingly steep cliffs which abruptly plunge into the sea. One only fully appreciates how densely forested the island is from the northern side and how trees grow in the most incredible and unlikely locations.

The helicopter returns to Funchal along the south coast, over a series of settlements scattered across gentler slopes, where the presence of humans is much more noticeable. This route basically follows one of the standard round the island packages provided by the company. However, it is also possible to simply hire the helicopter for a given length of time, or use it as an air taxi service between the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo or between Funchal and other parts of theisland.

It offers fulltime schooling for a wide range of international pupils aged between 3 and 15, of which 50 per cent are Portuguese. Children that are enrolled for the first time at this school do not require any kind of prior English or Portuguese language knowledge.

The school follows the British (Scottish curriculum) combined with official Portuguese subjects and is officially recognized by the Regional Secretary of Education as well as the British Council. It teaches a graded level of Portuguese and English up until the age of 15 so that pupils are completely bilingual. On leaving the school pupils are prepared in such a way so they can automatically be transferred directly to any other Portuguese school or an English

language school in any part of the world.
