Transnational Education (TNE) – An Overview

© Mat Wright

Transnational education (TNE) refers to the provision of education by one country offered in another. It does not include the traditional international student recruitment market where students travel to another country for their studies. In Malaysia, a UK TNE means that students based in Malaysia, are pursuing UK educational qualifications. All over the world, people want greater educational opportunities to enhance their lives and employment prospects. We live in a globalised world so our focus in education is on bringing an international dimension to education in schools, technical colleges and universities, on raising educational standards by sharing

8

The Guide to UK Qualification in Malaysia 2014/15

the UK’s expertise, and on encouraging the best international students to obtain a UK qualification. As a result, TNE has become a major part of the UK higher education landscape, and sits at the heart of the internationalisation strategies of many UK universities. In 2011/12, the number of students studying for a UK degree overseas, i.e. TNE degree, was over 570,000 - a greater number than the number of international students studying in the UK (435,230). Out of these 570,000 students, approximately 80 percent are at undergraduate level and 20 percent at postgraduate level. Demand for TNE is predicted to continue to increase significantly in the coming years.

The terminology for UK programmes delivered outside the UK are used by UK institutions to mean different things and are often used interchangeably: Dual / Joint award The UK institution and local partner provide programmes leading to two awards conferred by both institutions (dual award) or a single award jointly by both institutions (joint award). Twinning / Franchising The UK institution licences a local institution to teach some or all of its course, so that students can receive the award from the UK institution without having to attend classes physically in the UK campus.

Students at the off-shore campus will be awarded qualifications in the name of the UK institution. Validation The course is developed and delivered by the local institution. The UK institution assesses whether it is of appropriate quality to lead to its award. The UK institution will determine the extent to which it exerts direct control over quality assurance aspects. Articulation / Credit Transfer This refers to a transfer arrangement between a UK and a local institution. The UK institution agrees to recognise and grant exemptions to the students, based on the subjects taken in the local institution.

International Branch Campus The UK institution sets up an off-shore campus located in another country.

UK TNE programmes have been established in Malaysia for more than 30 years. Monitored by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) in the UK and the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), TNE programmes are trusted internationally. The establishment of a transnational model for Malaysian private higher education was spurred by the global economic crisis. In the 1980s, the global recession caused a major set-back to Malaysia’s rapid economic growth. The responsibility of financing students studying abroad became a heavy burden for many families and the government in Malaysia. Many of the students studying abroad were brought home and placed in local institutions. The sudden inflow of students caused a demand for places in higher

10

The Guide to UK Qualification in Malaysia 2014/15

education. To resolve this issue, the government started encouraging local private institutions to explore TNE programmes with foreign universities. Early birds In response to the government’s appeal, the first UK twinning programme was established in Malaysia. By the 1990s, the number of private colleges had increased from 20 (in 1985) to more than 400 today. The economic boom in the mid-1990s generated a huge demand for human resources in new industries such as services, trades and the manufacturing sectors. In 1992, polytechnics in the UK were promoted to new university status. Soon after, a consortium of colleges in Malaysia was formed to offer Higher National Diploma (HND) engineering courses in partnership with a UK institution.

All programmes were accredited by the Business Technical Education Council (BTEC) in the UK.

catered for students who could not afford twinning programmes that required them to continue their studies overseas.

Transnational transition Twinning in Malaysia started with 1+2 programmes: the first year of the degree studied locally, while the latter two years of studies were completed overseas. By 1993, 2+1 twinning programmes emerged. Colleges also started offering full courses in engineering and business. These courses were known as Graduate Diploma Programmes, as private colleges were not allowed to award full degrees then. These

By the late 1990s, most colleges were developing into comprehensive course delivery institutions, offering academic, professional, semi-professional and internal programmes. New forms of TNE programmes such as credit transfer, twinning and validated courses emerged soon after. Some local colleges started providing internal programmes, for instance, Diploma, that were recognised by overseas universities, allowing students to transfer credits to these institutions.

Did you know? Students pursuing UK qualifications in Malaysia are 4 times as many as Malaysian students studying in the UK.

Paradigm shift In 1996, the Private Higher Education Act liberalised and privatised higher education. However in 1997, the country was hit by the Asian financial crisis and the government had to withdraw undergraduate scholarships for overseas studies. Soon there was a surge in student enrolment in local universities. Once again, the government urged private institutions to expand, and foreign universities were invited to open local branches. The price for exit visas was also increased along with the cancellation of tax rebates for parents supporting children studying abroad. To accommodate more students, places in public universities were expanded from 45,000 in 1997 to 84,000 in 1999 through the franchising of matriculation programmes. 3+0 degree

12

The Guide to UK Qualification in Malaysia 2014/15

programmes were soon introduced in 19 colleges, allowing students to complete their entire course locally. The popularity of 3+0 degree programmes has increased consistently among Malaysian students throughout the years. This is borne out by the fact that the UK is the leading provider of TNE programmes in Malaysia, with more than 58,000 students enrolled in more than 800 courses. Such is the popularity that, of the countries that offer TNE programmes, Malaysia has become one of the largest providers. With the substantial stability of the 3+0 programmes in Malaysia over the years, Malaysia offers unique and attractive education choices to local and international students and is set to be an education hub. This has attracted a

number of world-class universities to establish their branches in Malaysia. In the late 1990s, The University of Nottingham established the first UK university in Malaysia. Iskandar Malaysia in the state of Johor is Malaysia’s premier education hub located in Nusajaya and comprises of foreign branch campuses which includes four UK institutions - Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia, University of Southampton Malaysia Campus, University of Reading Malaysia Campus and Marlborough College Malaysia. This ‘multiversity’ concept brings several benefits, not least of which is the fun and stimulating experience of living and studying in such a large and diverse student community.

With these developments over the past decades, Malaysia is quickly becoming an international education hub, tempting Malaysian students to study in-country for an overseas qualification while encouraging international students to come and study here.

Types of UK Qualifications in Malaysia Twinning : 1+2, 2+1 These programmes are all similar in structure, with part of the course being completed in the local Malaysian institution, and the remainder being finished in the UK partner institution. Graduates receive a degree awarded by the UK partner institution. Essentially, the difference lies in the length of time spent locally and overseas. In 2+1 programmes, the first two years of the course are completed in Malaysia, with the final year in the partner institution in the UK. Similarly, in the 1+2, the first year is spent in Malaysia, with the final two years away in the UK. Students study exactly the same syllabus as their counterparts in the UK partner institution, thereby achieving an equal standard of education.

14

The Guide to UK Qualification in Malaysia 2014/15

3+0 The 3+0 programme is an extension of the twinning programme. It is wholly completed in Malaysia. However, some institutions may have an option for students to spend a brief period at the UK partner institutions. The student completes the entire course in Malaysia and earns a degree awarded by the UK institution. There are significant financial savings as the student does not have to bear the cost of travelling and living overseas.

Dual / Joint award For both dual and joint degrees, the student completes the entire studies in Malaysia. In the case of dual award, the successful student is awarded two degrees for a single programme; each of the UK and Malaysia institutions makes one formally separate award. As for joint award, the UK institution collaborates with a local Malaysian institution in delivering a joint syllabus, leading to one award conferred by both institutions. Credit transfer The student begins studying in Malaysia, accumulating three to four credits for each subject taken. The student can then transfer the credits to a participating UK university in order to be exempted from taking certain classes. This reduces the amount of time needed to complete the degree in the UK.

The student is generally not committed to a particular university. In some cases, changing courses without losing accumulated credits is possible. International Branch Campus The branch campus, established by the UK institution in Malaysia, offers selective programmes from the home campus. In most cases, the essence and culture of the main campus, in terms of teaching and by the UK partner learning standards, academic and research, development and innovation excellence, is enforced. Upon completion of the course at the Malaysia campus, the student is awarded a degree which is indistinguishable from those awarded at the UK campus.

Why Choose a UK Qualification in Malaysia

UK education is synonymous around the world with quality, not just for prospective students but also employers, thus enhancing the employability of our graduates. The high quality is attained through many layers of quality assurance that students in Malaysia can depend on. World-class Qualifications UK qualifications are recognised and respected around the world. The UK enjoys a reputation for unsurpassed quality education throughout the world. It encourages skills that are relevant, marketable and much sought-after by today’s top companies which means students can look forward to better career prospects and higher potential earnings.

18

The Guide to UK Qualification in Malaysia 2014/15

Quality Assured Not only does the UK have a centuries-old tradition in education, it is home to an unsurpassed pool of experience and expertise in this field. There are over 3,000 education institutions in the UK, including 130 higher education institutions such as universities and 550 further education, technical and vocational colleges offering over 50,000 courses in UK. Such experience and expertise has established the UK as the world leader in developing quality standards and performance measures for education, which in turn has been extended to its transnational education.

Dynamic Tradition UK’s past achievements are ensuring our present scientific and artistic successes. Ambitious achievers who are seeking a superior education choose the UK because its education is constantly changing while retaining the best of its prestigious 800-year heritage. UK education offers the best from traditions of the past in combination with an up-to-date approach to the latest developments in new fields of study. Employability Research shows that employers generally prefer graduates who have international experience and they also favour graduates with a UK degree. Many transnational programmes offer the option of studying in the UK for a year, giving students the chance to gain additional international experience, and are therefore highly valued by employers in Malaysia.

Previous studies have reported that most employers ranked a graduate with a UK qualification at the top of their list. Additionally, employers recognise the reputation of the local partner institution offering the UK programme. English is the language of business, science and technology. A UK qualification will reflect to prospective employers that such graduates will possess a high degree of English competency. Affordability For several reasons, many students prefer to study in their home country or region rather than overseas. This may be so they can live with their families, or retain their current jobs. Often, studying a full-time degree in the home country is significantly cheaper than studying abroad. Costs of studying in a foreign country include visa fees, accommodation and flights.

Cost of Living in Malaysia One significant advantage for students pursuing studies in Malaysia is the relatively reasonable cost of living. Malaysia is one of the least expensive countries in the world to live in. However, it very much depends on the student’s personal lifestyle. On average, a monthly budget of RM1,400 (USD438) will provide a student with a rather comfortable living in Malaysia. Accommodation Accommodation per month can cost from RM300 (USD94) to RM500 (USD157). The rental varies depending on the geographical area, type of accommodation (e.g. single, twin-sharing), and facilities provided (e.g. with or without airconditioning). Food The expenses on food are estimated at RM500 to RM700 (USD157 to USD219) monthly. However, it would be more cost effective if a student cooks and shares the cooking expenses with friends. Transport Travelling to campus and within the city may cost approximately RM30 to RM50 (USD10 to USD16) per month.

Telecommunication The mobile service providers in Malaysia offer very competitive packages for different needs. Some even provide special packages for students. On average, a student may spend about RM50 to RM80 (USD16 to USD25) per month on telecommunication. Study Materials The estimated cost of study materials is at RM50 to RM100 (USD16 to USD31) per month, depending on the nature of course and coursework involved. Higher expenses for reading materials can be expected at the beginning of each semester/ term. Other Expenses A student should set aside additional RM100 to RM200 (USD32 to USD62) for other expenses like social events, toiletries, movies, etc. This amount varies with the personal lifestyle of each student.

Notes 1. Estimated exchange rate : USD1 = RM3.20; ÂŁ1 = RM4.90. 2. All figures are estimates and serve only as a guide. 3. For actual fees incurred, please check with the respective institution.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Without a doubt, the cost of tertiary education is financially taxing on students. As the cost increases year after year, it is imperative to make the necessary plans and consider available options to help finance a student’s education. There are many financial aids available to students; the most common being scholarships, grants, study loans and waiver of tuition fee by the education institutions. The following are some of the major sources of higher education funding in Malaysia.

Ministry of Education Bursary Starting from 2012, students who obtain 9A+ and above in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) are eligible for bursaries awarded by the Ministry of Education. The bursary covers the cost of one of the recognised pre-university programmes, including the GCE A Levels offered by governmentendorsed higher education institutions in Malaysia before the students pursue their undergraduate degree at local or foreign universities. Selected candidates will be offered a scholarship from the preparatory stage to the undergraduate degree, subject to the conditions set and the Public Services Department’s (PSD) recognition of students’ choice of studies at the tertiary level. www.moe.gov.my

National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN), Ministry of Higher Education Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional The National Higher Education Fund (Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi National, PTPTN) was initiated under the National Higher Education Act 1997 to be fully operational since 1 November 1999. The PTPTN Education Loan Scheme was set up with the aim of providing education loans to students pursuing their studies at local higher education institutions (HEIs). Via this loan, students have the option to either fully or partially pay for their tuition fees and their subsistence for the duration of their study in HEIs. This is in accordance with the government’s mission that no student should be denied entry to a university due to financial constraints.

Yayasan Tunku Abdul Rahman Scholarship Yayasan Tunku Abdul Rahman (Tunku Abdul Rahman Foundation) was set up as a commemoration to Almarhum Y.T.M Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister. The scholarship is awarded to students who have completed the first year of a Bachelor’s degree programme at any higher education institution in Malaysia. It covers full tuition fee, monthly allowance, book allowance and annual return air fare to travel back to Sabah or Sarawak for those studying in Peninsular Malaysia or vice versa. www.yayasantar.org.my

The PTPTN Loan offers financial assistance to students based on their level of studies – from diplomas all the way to doctoral degrees. Students are given 5 to 20 years to repay based on the quantum of loan borrowed. Repayment of loan begins six months after the end of the loan period. All applications for PTPTN loans must be done online through the website. www.ptptn.gov.my

DISCIPLINES

© Mat Wright

35

Accountancy

In a nutshell, students will be trained to perform in an evolving industry and to exacting standards. There is a need for individuals with multi-disciplinary skills who are able and accountable. The UK has the most stringent financial regulations in the world, in a global climate where now even seemingly innocuous transactions come under the microscope. In a rapidly evolving global marketplace, UK educators are matching the pace of change to offer relevant courses to the brightest students. For UK accountancy graduates, the possibilities are endless. Mention the word ‘accountancy’ and people immediately think of figures, numbers, adding, subtracting, and big lined books covered in dust. To most, accountancy is something dead, old and boring. In actual fact, if you understand the fundamentals, you will find that it is vibrant and can breathe new life into your struggling business. The UK and Malaysia have been producing world-class accounting graduates for the past 50 years. Accountancy qualifications open up many opportunities in different fields of human activity. There is probably no better entry to top jobs in business and industry, management and financial consulting than working to become a highly qualified and experienced accountant. From auditors to business advisors, the role of accountants has changed significantly over the years. With this expanded role, their education and

36

training have also changed. Apart from learning the traditional bookkeeping techniques, they are now required to possess a wider scope of knowledge, for instance economics, management, marketing etc. To achieve this, a degree is not essential but degrees in certain subjects will earn exemptions from one or more parts of the professional accounting examinations. The variety and scope of the accounting profession can be broadly divided into four areas – chartered accountants, certified accountants, public finance accountants and management accountants. The differences among these sub-disciplines are mainly in the type of finance work that is done such as financial strategy, risk management, financial services, auditing, taxation and banking as well as the type of organisation that requires the service such as the government, banks, public listed companies and a whole host of other institutions.

Art and Design

The field of art and design creatively expresses emotions and ideas through tangible objects and illustrations. Though the appreciation of art is often subjective, it is a powerful form of communication that has the ability to provoke, influence and inspire. In the digital era, art and design is integrated into almost every facet of our lives from paintings to advertising, to ordinary household objects. The UK has some of the finest art and design colleges (and bestknown alumni) in the world. This has inevitably attracted countless number of students to pursue a degree in Art and Design from all across the globe. The equation is simple really. Art and design graduates are drawn to the notion of studying a UK qualification as it not only has some of the bestknown and admired institutions in the world, but these institutions have produced some of the greatest artists and designers, both past and present. With the tradition of art and design dating back hundreds of years, the UK continues to become a hub for a veritable who’s who of names in this area – people who have reached the pinnacle of their profession in art, fashion, design and animation many times over, from acclaimed designer Jimmy Choo to the ‘Prince of Fashion’ Bernard Chandran. It stands to reason, therefore, that the UK provides good quality courses and an excellent study environment for students in Malaysia. There are a number of programmes to choose from that encompass design areas such as architecture, graphic design

and animation. Students will also be equipped with other skill sets such as the ability to understand and interpret art, and the acquisition of business acumen through additional subjects such as philosophy, sociology or history, and business subjects. Studying for a UK qualification provides you with access to a curriculum and teaching methodology designed to provide you with a high quality education. Aside from the course content, students will also pick up leadership, communication, teamwork and problem solving skills as they work with different individuals and assignments.

Malaysia has a demand for people trained in the arts and design. There are multiple industries looking for independent, reliable and forthcoming graduates of the right calibre. A relevant UK qualification presented to a potential employer shows that you have indeed achieved the necessary skills to set yourself apart from the rest and that you are ready for the next challenge.

Typically, students can study subjects such as:

Engineering

Engineering combines the fields of science and mathematics to solve real world problems that improve the world around us. What really distinguishes an engineer is his ability to implement ideas in a cost-effective and practical approach. This ability to take a thought, or abstract idea, and translate it into reality is what separates an engineer from other fields of science and mathematics. Engineers are problem solvers, organisers, communicators, calculators and designers. They are capable of clearly defining a problem and its relevant constraints (such as time, cost, etc.) and providing a simple solution. A senior engineer will usually perform less technical work (calculations and designs) but instead focus on managing a project or team of engineers. Without a doubt, the UK is a world leader in engineering. Engineers have remained at the top of the technological food chain and, in many cases, driving it forward. Naturally, such excellence has created a first-class education system, with engineering qualifications born out of sound scientific and technical knowhow. Engineering institutions in the UK are intertwined with industry in a way few other countries can match, conducting research projects worth billions of pounds every year. This research is not limited in any way, with universities engaged in all manner of projects involving aerospace, defence, marine, construction, automotive, nuclear and telecommunications technology.

Such options are available to students on TNE courses in Malaysia. The scope of qualifications available here is varied, with courses available in: Electrical and electronic engineering Mechatronic engineering Civil engineering Mechanical engineering Telecommunications Automotive engineering Manufacturing Engineering management Chemical process engineering Communications engineering Meanwhile, something that has been evolving in the UK for some time is the level of qualification young people aspire to achieve. Many students now opt for a four-year Master of Engineering (MEng) degree, which has become the benchmark for graduate engineering positions in the UK. Nevertheless, Bachelors degrees (BEng) are still available. Students can choose to begin a MEng course and transfer to the BEng during their first

or second year of study if they desire and vice versa. Similar options are available for students studying TNE courses in Malaysia, where a MEng qualification will really make young hopefuls stand out from the crowd. Added to this, many courses now offer the chance of industrial placements lasting from a few weeks to a year. This allows undergraduates to put theory into practice and gain firsthand experience of their future jobs – and receive a salary. The result is that engineers who have been trained to UK standards are a highly sought-after commodity with a unique skill set, which also makes them desirable to other professions – and other nations. The UK engineering honours degree is a truly global qualification. Useful websites Engineering Council, UK www.engc.org.uk Board of Engineers Malaysia www.bem.org.my

The UK has been at the forefront of medical care and research for centuries. The UK’s ingenuity and commitment to this field has not wavered since. Medical professionals trained the UK way have pioneered new techniques and methods of helping those who need help most. In Malaysia, such work has helped, among other things, with curing and preventing debilitating or deadly diseases. Therefore, it is a foregone conclusion that doctors, nurses and medical scientists from the UK are held in high regard the world over for their level of training and depth of knowledge. The UK education system, which is available to Malaysian students through TNE, prepares the next generation for work in the medical profession through a network of firstclass training facilities and university hospitals – allowing students to work directly alongside seasoned professionals. Students acquire in-

40

depth theory and practical training, along with a whole host of soft skills which will come as part and parcel of their course. It is an enviable fact, that numerous UK-trained healthcare professionals are poached by other nations, due to their expertise and dedication to the job. Nevertheless, the majority of Malaysians do stay to work in hospitals here in their homeland, providing expert care for those who need it. The Malaysian healthcare industry has been booming in the last two decades due to the development of chemical and biological sectors in the respective industries, thus creating a huge demand for skills and expertise within the domestic healthcare industry. The high quality training and education provided in the UK as well as the strong Commonwealth relations between the UK and Malaysia enable the young local graduates to easily thrive in the Malaysian healthcare industry.

The Guide to UK Qualification in Malaysia 2014/15

Of course, the main healthcare professions people can identify are doctors and dentists. However, holistic medical care covers a host of other professionals that require specialist training. These courses are all available through TNE programmes in Malaysia, and it is understood that there will be a wider range available in the nottoo- distant future. The crucial role the health professionals play in our society cannot be underestimated, as we are still in short supply of suitably qualified staff to care for those who need their expertise. Hospitality and Tourism

Today, hospitality is part of the tourism industry and is a major part of the serviced provided by restaurants, hotels and airlines. The goal is to make the customer feel welcomed, comfortable and satisfied. People who work in food, restaurant and travel industries, practise it by providing guests with quality food, drinks and entertainment. Hospitality and tourism is a multidisciplinary field that prepares students with the skills, knowledge and expertise required for management, marketing and operations positions in this expanding global industry. The UK tourism and hospitality industry is one of the most established in the world, with high standards of training and education that are widely respected and in demand. Undergraduate courses in hospitality and tourism typically include a period of industrial experience, where students get the opportunity to put into practice the theory learned in the classroom. Employers also see great value in this work experience when considering graduates’ employability. Many programmes available in Malaysia through TNE allow students to specialise in one or more particular areas in addition to the general hospitality subjects. These can include:

Leisure management Event planning

Conference management Facilities Management Tourism Human Resource Management

of other service establishments, ranging from restaurants and cafes to integrated resorts, casinos, country clubs, convention centres and even cruise ships.

You will develop your capabilities through the study of basic concepts, problem-solving, decisionmaking, theory and management applications. You will also acquire specialised skills within the industry Hospitality and Tourism which, depending upon the course, could be anything from front office operations and food and beverage management, to organising and promoting large concerts. Hospitality and tourism is a big business in Malaysia, attracting customers from all over the world. In spite of a global recession, malls, parks and hotels continue to be built. They will need suitably qualified staff to run them. As a graduate, you can go on to work in a wide assortment

Information and Communications Technology

Multimedia Networking E-business technology and development There is currently great demand for the skills needed to manage the huge amount of information that organisations collect and the volume of information on the Internet. Hence, institutions’ ICT and mathematics departments often collaborate with Industrial partners. Ensuring that their courses remain practical and their students highly employable.

The UK is the place to be for information and communications technology (ICT) ingenuity and inventions, with new ideas and innovations being developed almost on a daily basis. The UK has been at the leading edge of the computing and information technology (IT) industry since the first computing machine was conceived by English mathematician Charles Babbage in the 1830s. Many developments in integrated circuits, telecommunications and the Internet have been achieved by UK computer scientists. For example, the creation of the World Wide Web – revolutionising the Internet – would not have been possible had it not been for Oxford graduate Sir Timothy Berners- Lee, who had the idea of merging the Internet and hypertext. As we steadily cruise into the 21st century, the UK has the strongest ICT skills in Europe and the highest number of ICT graduates in the whole of Western Europe. The UK is a strong market for new technology and design

42

with a sophisticated consumer base. UK consumers are early adopters of new technologies and design, making the UK market an excellent ‘test bed’ for ICT companies. Therefore, pursuing a UK qualification in ICT, without a doubt opens up many opportunities for you to strive in a heavily competitive, yet rewarding market. There is also a vast range of ICT courses available right here in Malaysia. Some courses have a strong mathematical focus; others are more vocational in approach, or are more applicationsorientated. Numerous specialisations and combinations are available in ICT courses. These include:

Artificial intelligence Business systems Internet and web development Software engineering development Systems analysis Mobile computing

The Guide to UK Qualification in Malaysia 2014/15

There is much to gain from the study of ICT. It is shaping our world, the way we live, think and make choices. The UK remains a world leader in ICT developments with its rich history of innovation. However, don’t just look back at this success, but look forward and be a part of an exciting future.

Law

“A rule laid down for the guidance of an intelligent being by an intelligent being having power over him.” John Austin (English jurist born 1790) - a brief quote describing the function of law. In general, law as a body of official rules and regulations, generally found in constitutions, legislation, judicial opinions, and the like, that is used to govern a society and to control the behaviour of its members, so Law is a formal mechanism of social control. Legal systems are particular ways of establishing and maintaining social order. The UK law qualifications are widely recognised and respected in many countries. The skills you learn could be useful in other careers – many management consultants have a legal background. You would certainly not be restricted to one type of work unless you choose to specialise. The variety and combination of courses you can take, and the different institutions that offer pure law and combined courses make studying a UK law programme extremely flexible. Many institutions have their own dedicated schools of law. Besides, the Malaysian legal system has striking similarities with the UK. A fellow member nation of the Commonwealth, much of Malaysian law is based on the English Legal System. This makes it easier for students studying a UK law programme to practise law in Malaysia.

There are essentially three types of practising lawyers in Malaysia:

Solicitors, who undertake a wide range of legal work, including corporate transactions, transfer of property and litigation. They may or may not specialise.

Those who specialise in litigation appear only in the lower courts (unless they have obtained an additional “higher rights” qualification enabling them to appear in the higher courts).

Barristers/advocates, also known as counsel, who are specialist advocates with unlimited access to the courts.

Legal executives, whose daily work is similar to that of solicitors, but usually work in a particular specialism, such as transferring property, litigation or probate. They work for solicitors, or in the legal departments of public or private organisations.

Mass Communications

Journalism Marketing Filmmaking Publishing Broadcasting TV, video, multimedia Media research Political research or speechwriting

Media is a wide-ranging field which is still growing. Journalism, public relations, advertising, communication studies, information management, broadcasting, TV and film are some of its many subjects. Communication in all its forms is becoming more sophisticated, and demanding a more educated workforce. Interest in mass communication is an area of academic study that is growing steadily as it includes the study of the ways people and groups relay messages to a large audience. A number of education institutions in the UK offer majors in mass communication, and many graduates can find jobs in the news media, advertising or public relations agencies, publishing houses, and research institutes. With the growing popularity of the internet, the demand for writers who can generate content for the online space is growing steadily.

44

The UK leads the way worldwide in the study of media-related subjects, and is highly respected. It has thriving publishing, music, film, and TV industries, with a wealth of linked training courses. This inevitably provides young Malaysians a great opportunity to prove themselves in these industries after pursuing their degree. Moreover, many of these courses also offer practical work experience which is highly valuable for students aiming to gain employment in specific areas of interest. They are thus prepared to fill the ever-increasing demand for mass communication graduates worldwide and especially Malaysia, as it cruises towards a developed nation status by 2020. Studying mass communication can lead to a wide range of jobs. These include:

The Guide to UK Qualification in Malaysia 2014/15

You may be in doubt about the significance and prospects of pursuing a path in mass communication. However, as we cruise steadily into the 21st century, the future looks bright. Mass communication is important because it creates a global connection. As mankind grows increasingly reliant on information and technology, the UK programme is the perfect choice for young individuals aiming to obtain a qualification in mass communication.

Sciences

The word “science” probably brings to mind many different pictures: a fat textbook, white lab coats and microscopes, an astronomer peering, through a telescope, a naturalist in the rainforest and Einstein’s equations scribbled on a chalkboard. These images reflect some aspect of science, but none of them provides a full picture because science is multifaceted. Science is both a body of knowledge and a process. In school, science may sometimes seem like a collection of isolated and static facts listed in a textbook, but that’s only a small part of the story. Just as importantly, science is also a process of discovery that allows us to link isolated facts into coherent and comprehensive understandings of the natural world. A UK degree holder in Sciences reflects the recognition, expertise and professionalism needed to pursue great ambitions in the field of science. This is because the UK is one of the world’s leading faculties in producing quality young graduates from umpteen years. Malaysia currently has a thirst for science. As the country strives for developed nation status by 2020, the need for qualified individuals becomes more acute. There are many roles to play in this development – doctors for hospitals, engineers for infrastructure, teachers for education – but one industry frequently overlooked is that of science.

© Mat Wright

As a result, scientists are helping drive the country forward with the aid of a world-class education provided by UK institutions in Malaysia. The UK has been a world leader in scientific research for hundreds of years with countless discoveries. Recent major breakthroughs have included mapping the human genome, applying stem cell technology, advancing neuroscience and detecting meningitis.

Our science industry needs suitably qualified staff to keep pushing and developing new and innovative ways in which we can care for ourselves and sustain our existence. Local employers know that applicants with a UK qualification in this field have the prerequisite skills to meet the demands required of them in this expanding industry. A UK qualification will give you a boost in the right direction.

The UK and Malaysia have thus come together to offer first-class science qualifications through TNE, allowing Malaysian youths to get the best start in a cutting-edge career. Through this students can now study subjects such as: Science and technology Biosciences Food science Marine science

SUCCESS STORY

83

The challenging part of this course for me is that it is 100% examination based. There are no marks for assignments available to aid in my overall marks. Hence, I have to put in extra effort to read the essential readings as well as the subject guides given to us.

Felicia Wong Institution University of London International Programmes Course BSc Management Stage of course Year 2 What drives me to succeed in my studies My dream to have my own dog day care business drives me to succeed in my studies. I treat the obstacles I face during my studies as a challenge to push myself further and to prove that I can overcome problems as long as I am willing to do it. Therefore, I will not give up easily and aim for my goals. Three things I’ll never leave home without Mobile, purse and clothes. The best thing about being a university student For me, the best bits about being a university student are that I have humorous and helpful lecturers at Crescendo College, where I am studying for my University of London degree. Not only do they make the class lively; they guide me a lot in my studies making sure I am on the right path. I am thankful to have them as a part of my university life.

About your UK-based programme My course, BSc Management is a mixture of Business, Economics, IT, Social Science, Marketing, and Accounting. It prepares me for the real world and the actual working environment. It was designed to meet the needs of employers when recruiting graduates. I like how practical and career based it is.

An important skill to survive in a university / college An important study skill I have learnt is that last-minute efforts are useless if no preparatory work has been done beforehand. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. We should start preparing early so that we will be all ready for what is ahead of us.

In most business courses you are required to choose a subject to major in. The main reason I chose this BSc Management degree is that it does not require me to major in a specific subject. I would love to learn and gain knowledge on all areas of business (such as marketing, human resources, finance and so on) and this degree gives me the opportunity to do so.

Looking ahead After graduation, I hope to continue my studies to get a Masters degree. After my Masters, I would like to find a career which gives me the opportunity to have a fulfilling experience and also allows me to improve and widen my knowledge. If I could, I would like to start my own business.

My favourite subject(s) My favourite subject would be Human Resource Management (HRM). This subject taught me a lot about how should I handle scenarios that I would probably face in the future when I’m working. My lecturer at Crescendo provides me with much useful extra information by sharing his experiences and knowledge, which I appreciate very much. University life Life at Crescendo is awesome with amazing friends and lecturers. The campus is new so everything is clean and nice. I like the environment as it is far from town, it is peaceful and free from pollution from cars.

The Guide to UK Qualification in Malaysia 2014/15

As dogs are my passion, I would love to have my own dog day care business so that I can interact and play with all different kinds of dogs. Plus, I could possibly train them too. I believe as long as I have the determination plus hard work and persistence, this dream of mine is achievable. My advice Don’t be shy to try out new things or ask for help. Everyone around you is willing to help, all you have to do is ask. There are many great opportunities so it is a shame to let them go to waste. If you just plunge in confidently, you will realise how much more you could enjoy. Work hard right from the beginning and remember that everything counts. Try to be open to new cultures, friendships and new experiences. Also, be sure to get involved in societies and make new friends - you won’t be at University forever so make the most of it. It is what will make your University days memorable.
