the University, Guardian, student forums etc. I felt the insights were useful in gearing me to set the right expectations which helped me settle in comfortably and quickly.

2. What were some of your most memorable moments (academically & socially) while studying in the UK?

1. What inspired you about your course? What did you feel you gained from studying in the UK? The Chevening Scholarship has been invaluable to my intellectual and personal growth. I have been able to realise a long held dream of doing a postgraduate course in development studies at a prestigious university. I learnt about countries previously unfamiliar to me such as Latin America and India, to name a few, and dichotomised their development models. I also gained insights on the role of industrial policies in shaping economic models and how social policies impact poverty levels, to name a few. The one year in London was truly an exhilarating adventure. I studied alongside bright and accomplished individuals from diverse backgrounds and countries - my intellect and capabilities were pushed beyond my limits. In retrospect, having been in the company of emerging leaders and having lived in the most vibrant and exciting city in the world inspires you to be a go-getter and risk taker. Moreover, I have also gained a lasting network of friends which is truly the most invaluable takeaway.

A) Participating in the Wikimania conference 2014, Global Scholars Symposium 2014 and the Commonwealth Games Business Conference 2014 B) Meeting the Queen Buckingham Palace

C) Climbing mount Snowdonia with my fellow comrades from King’s - the three hours climb was more excruciating than dissertation writing D) Academically, there were a lot of great moments during seminars and the terrifying final hours of essay writings +_+. 3. What piece of advice did you feel was most useful to you before you left to study in the UK? Advice such as the first few things to do after settling in, what to expect when you are a student (the discounts!!), getting around the UK - all available online from various sources such as Chevening,

4.

What are some of your favourite things to do socially in the UK?

Picnic at the parks, blind hopping on the bus, afternoons at the museums, dinner get-togethers and aimless walking with the friends and colleagues. And the runs for gelatos tooo!!! 5. What are your plans in the future? To take part in developing the Brunei economy through projects that will enhance the entrepreneurship ecosystem, contribute to the development of ASEAN through community projects and strengthen my capabilities as an entrepreneur. 6. What piece of advice would you impart to students planning to study in the UK/ Chevening applicant? Do your research on the course and uni before applying. Find out exactly how furthering your studies can facilitate your personal and professional development. You will have a more enriching experience when you are mentally ready to commit - especially for a gruelling postgraduate course. Financial Tips For Students Studying Overseas As an international student on a budget and being far from home, students overseas would need to learn how to manage their budgets wisely, especially in cities where cost of living may be high. Managing your finances is very much a part of learning how to be more independent. Search for a bank that allows you to conduct your banking easily. Before deciding on which bank you would like to open an account with, conduct some research on whether they charge any fees for any of their services. For example fees for using the ATM or monthly charges for the account that they are opening. Find out about the ATM network and whether or not their ATMs are easily available in your area. Online banking is becoming increasingly important and is convenient when it comes to funds transfers between countries which would also be convenient for your parents to transfer funds to your account. Keep a budget/financial log. Keep a record of your spending. This way you can always be aware of your budget and be sure that you stick to it while also knowing where your money goes to. Take advantage of discounts. When making a purchase, remember to ask if they have student discounts and preferably to make it a choice to shop in stores that do offer these discounts. Coupons usually give out discounts or promotions. Try to get these and you’ll be saving more than you think. Compare prices on groceries and household items to see where you can save on for daily purchases. Enjoy free activities provided. There are some universities as well as colleges that provide entertainment and activities for the students. Join and participate in these events and that way you can save money from spending on entertainment like movies and such.

4-step

Career Planning

1 2 3 4

Career planning is something we all have to do at some stage. Career planning is identifying what it is that you want to do, not only in the short term, but also for some steps after that. But career planning can be difficult. There are several ‘lacks’. Lack of knowledge:

Lack of time:

Lack of help or tools:

Lack of motivation:

What jobs are available in the economy? What jobs will possibly disappear in the near future? Many students know that they should be doing some planning but don’t know how to go about it systematically.

Your day can already be filled up with homework and co-curricular activities and family responsibilities (and facebook!) Although you are aware that some decisions should be made now, it’s easy to decide to worry about your future sometime later.

One place to start with decision making about your career is the 4-step plan.

1 2

Identifying is deciding what are your strengths and your skills. What do you do well? What activities do you enjoy? Exploring is researching the World of Work. What jobs are there other than the usual doctor, lawyer, geologist, pilot or teacher?

3

Planning follows on from exploring. It means selecting your subjects carefully, then planning to achieve the required

4

Doing your career plan is a very important step. Don’t forget to ‘do’ your plan. Do you have the grades? If not, why

grades in your exams. You should experience your proposed career by completing a period of work shadowing.

not? Try different study techniques until you find one that works for you. Do not end up regretting missed opportunities because you did not ‘do’ your plan.

Your career planning may include wanting to study at a university in the United Kingdom. There are 123 universities and many thousands of courses so how do you decide which course and university will be right for you? The starting place is on the internet, using www.ucas.com. The international search allows you to search ‘by subject’, and then displays for you a list of all the courses available. Concentrate on those universities that meet the ranking criteria set by the Brunei scholarship section. Follow the on-line links to find out the course specific requirements – are there any particular A-level subjects and/or the grades needed. Make a list of the universities and courses for which you believe you meet, or are close to, the course A-level requirements. Are there other entry criteria such as aptitude tests or the personal qualities desired in applicants? Be careful about the search term you use. For example, if you are interested in ‘forensic science’, only some universities call their degree a Forensic Science degree; other universities include forensic science as part of a Biochemistry degree.

Similarly, a Criminology degree at one university is likely to be called a Sociology degree elsewhere. Even courses with the same title can be very different in terms of content and study methods, so look at the university websites and course descriptors to help you decide which one will suit you best. See what subjects are studied in the first year and what is the structure of the degree. Don’t just look at the websites of the universities on your list; look at other university websites as they may have useful information about the ‘typical’ applicant for the course. All of this research will be an immense help when you sit down to write your personal statement. Career planning is very important as you are making decisions now that will affect the next 40 years of your life. Use the 4-step career planning model and discuss your research with your school’s careers advisor. Article contributed by

Fiona Fung 27 Salford University – BA (Hons) Media and Performance, MSc Audio Production Production Co-ordinator, BBC Comedy (Media City, Salford)

Choosing my undergraduate degree was tricky! I knew I wanted to learn more about ‘media’ but wasn’t sure whether I wanted to be behind the camera or in front of it. I carefully read through the course descriptions of various media courses in the UK, and thankfully found the course at Salford. It was perfect for me as it combined both technical and performance skills, this way I could have a taste of both worlds. The course was great fun, and everything I wanted it to be. The best thing though was that it offered opportunities to have real hands-on experience in the industry. I managed to help out on a number of short films and work at a local TV station; all great experience so that once I had graduated, I already had those necessary basic skills. When I first arrived in the UK, I was quite overwhelmed but I knew that I had to make a real effort to make friends and get used to the lifestyle. It’s not just about going to university, but you have to learn to look after yourself, cook, clean, do the shopping and just generally be responsible for yourself! Thankfully, I made some really great friends on my course and in my house so it made the transition much easier. I had to learn to find that balance between studying and enjoying myself! Coming here meant discovering new experiences, new friends, and new foods! And all those can

be so distracting, but I learned to find a good balance! I did however enjoy the chance to travel around the UK to visit my friends from home who had gone to study in different parts of the UK. This was a nice way of exploring and a great way of sharing experiences with my friends. Once I graduated, I worked in an office before deciding to continue studying and doing my masters. Whilst working part time and doing my masters, I also did small media jobs as a Runner to gain more experience and contacts. Before long, I had completed my masters and had a fair a m o u n t of work experience under my belt. From here I succeeded getting on a Channel 4 Training scheme, from which my working career started.

For anyone about to leave for the UK on a new venture, my advice would be to give it 100%! Don’t shy away from discovering new things, or making new friends. If you have any difficulties, there is always someone to help you at your university. Remember to ask questions and speak up if you don’t know what to do. It might be worlds apart from what you’re used to, but remember that everyone is in a similar position! Try not to stay in your comfort zone – mingle with all the students, in your house or on your course. You’ll find that you have much more rounded experience and will walk away thinking you made the most of your time in the UK!

Your BIBD Guide to an

Awesome Student Life

One of the greatest experiences in life is having the opportunity to study overseas; to be able to mould your independent survival skills in a new environment, reserve some time to explore the new surroundings, and strive hard to get good grades. With all these excitements, it is easy to get distracted and sometimes stray from the path you have visually paved at the beginning of this journey, to achieve your educational dreams. One of the most important responsibilities all students must consistently try to sustain is managing their finances.

As an Islamic financial institution, BIBD strives to not only provide the best range of shariah-compliant products and an excellent customer service experience, but also aims to provide financial planning awareness. Here are some tips as you begin your educational journey abroad:

1

Keep TRACK of Your Money

2

Spend WISELY

3

Watch Out for INFLUENTIAL Spending!

With such busy student lives, there will be times at the end of the week/month where you find yourselves questioning, “Where has all my money gone to?”. It is important to keep a list of your fixed (rent, utility bills, transportation, etc) and variable (food, groceries, entertainment, etc) expenditures on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. This helps you to understand your spending patterns and estimate an average monthly expense in order to plan for following months. Download/install BIBD Mobile App or BIBD Online Banking to monitor your account and track your spending.

Reflect and review your spending pattern. Look back at your list of items you have spent on previous months and ask yourselves if you really need them. Identify the categories where the bigger portion of your monthly allowance has gone to and check if it is reasonable. If not, try to minimise expenses in those categories for the following months or keep an eye out for discount offers.

Speaking of discounts, remember the last time you wanted to buy a doughnut but ended up buying six because there was a discount offer? So, you share the pack with friends, a novel gesture, but a gesture resulting from a poor financial decision. Take advantage of discounts but also ask yourselves again if this is something you need or if it’s unnecessary spending. Peer pressure can affect your preferences, decisions and actions and may have an impact on your spending patterns. A friend persuading you to buy matching shoes may put you in a situation where you feel pressured into spending.

4

Earn EXTRA Income

5

SAVE

There’s no harm in getting a job to earn a little extra money for an excursion. Work during your semester breaks or when you have some free time but of course, make sure you’re legally able to and your studies are not affected.

If you have some money left at the end of the week/month, put them in your savings account. Your discipline in saving may actually “save” you when you find yourself in need of some emergency funds.

What new INTERNATIONAL students need to know about the UK I did my LLB in Aberystwyth University in Wales and then continued with my Masters in King’s College London, doing Medical Ethics and Law. Studying in the UK was one experience I will always cherish and remember. Before I left for the UK people often reminded me, “Did you pack your sweater?”, “Did you bring enough food?”, “Make sure to bring your jumper and anything that will keep you warm, it can get pretty cold out there”. They always reminded me of the material things, but for me, being emotionally and mentally prepared to live a life in the UK is more important than anything physical or material because, to be frank, studying in the UK isn’t all “tea and biscuits”. You may bring enough coats and sweaters but if you’re not emotionally prepared, you may break down in the first few months you’re there. Trust me, I’ve had a taste of it. Name:

What you need to know about the UK is this: there will always be challenges you will face as well as ups and downs you will encounter throughout all those 3 or 4 years you are there. But what I would like to say is that studying in the UK is the best experience you will ever get. UK is very diverse with all the different cultures, places and people you will get to see and meet. It is definitely one thrilling ride of joy. The teaching is different from what I was used to when I attended sixth form in Brunei. It definitely came as a shock to me but I overcame it by listening to my parents’ advice and getting used to it by asking for help from my tutors and course mates. My advice is that it may get tough sometimes and you may miss home and your family a lot more than you usually do but all you have to do is fight for it because this is a huge stepping stone for you, you’re in it to win it. The atmosphere is so different compared to Brunei and you may get

overwhelmed by all of it but all you have to do is to mentally prepare yourself and make the best of it. Try your best in everything and always remember that once everything is over, all those years you’ve been studying there, the memories of it, good and bad, will always be a part of you wherever you are and you’ll be more mature and independent. So seize every moment of it, grab all the opportunities you can get when you’re there because there isn’t a time in your life you will get to enjoy all of this. Make friends with people all over the world, explore and see things you might never get to see because nothing beats being a student studying in the UK. It was definitely one of the best years of my life.

How studying in the UK has shaped me By: Abdul Malik Omar

I set out to study in the UK to pursue a top business degree education. And I find University of Essex, which happens to have a consistent global reputation for business research and academic teaching, the right place to be in. I also wanted to be close to the City of London. I find the City very strategic when it comes to meeting great people, attending great talks, and learning great ideas; three factors monumental in shaping who I am today.

The course I took in university is BSc (Hons) International Enterprise and Business Development. What inspires me about the course is that it contains modules and group coursework activities needed to enhance my theoretical knowledge and practical leadership skills. These twin factors I then utilized in running my future business projects effectively, with TEDxGadong, Brunei’s first TEDx Talk being one of them. Outside my studies I attended great talks given by many world-renowned personalities. These personalities included Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, Ex-PM of Australia John Howard, and Wikipidea Founder Jimmy Wales. In the process these talks not only gave me a chance to learn and absorb their ideas, but also took me to exciting places like Bloomberg HQ, Google Campus London, LSE, and Oxford University. Additionally, I co-established a society called Brunei Enterprise, with me as its first President. Brunei Enterprise is a society with an aim of elevating entrepreneurship among the Bruneian youths. We do this by involving them in organizing our projects. These projects include TEDxGadong, Global Entrepreneurship Week, and Google Enterprise

Campus London events. In my final year of study, I took a six months internship programme at one of UK’s top weekly Youtube shows, London Real TV. In the company I was tasked to create weekly twitter quotes, design pictures, and select video timestamps. I also became a booking assistant where I managed to invite few guests into the show. I even sent an invitation to UK’s PM David Cameron and Ariana Grande, which they unfortunately rejected! But it was a fun experience! For my plan this year I am committing myself primarily to self-study. I do this by attempting to devour the hundreds of books I bought from the UK – if possible! This drive for self-study stems from none other than the university’s insistence on life learning, which I find extremely valuable for my personal development. To the students planning to study overseas this year or in the future, the best tip I can give you is to meet current or former scholars, and get their advice and guidance. They will help you a lot in your journey, as they did to me. In fact, if it were not for the advice of my acquaintances, I would not have been in the UK in the first place! So go out there and meet them. You will learn a lot. Good luck!
