About the Cover: This month our cover was created by Abdulaziz AlHunaiyyan. His illustrations celebrate what is quintessentially Kuwaiti seen through the lens of the past. He uses simple lines and colors, to create nuanced representations of the things we all know and love about K-Town.

And just like that, summer is here! Hard to believe it really, since 2024 has been an absolutely strange year for so many of us, what with the agonizing never ending ordeal in Gaza that has turned the days and months into one long blur, combined with all of the changes going on locally, regionally, and internationally, and of course the global economic situation that has us all worried, but not sure about what, or when it’s all actually going to come crashing down, if ever, since the predictions and forecasts change frequently!

But until the world implodes, we’re going to keep on doing what we love; sharing the positive things happening in Kuwait and introducing our readers to the people who help make the world a brighter place. This month we met with Amany Nour, a ventriloquist and puppeteer for Truth or Dare. Her performances delight children and adults alike and help the little ones navigate big issues like bullying and gratitude. For Up Close and Personal, illustrator and artist Abdulaziz AlHunaiyyan, walks us through his process.

We fell in love with his 80s themed art that feels nostalgic and fresh at the same time. Another inspiring person in this issue is Dunja Radanovic, who is not your average personal trainer. She is empowering women at every stage of motherhood to stay fit and healthy, and is slowly redefining what it means to be a strong mom.

We also got to interview Dr Ronald Leaf, co-founder of Autism Partnership, an organization that helps parents and caregivers navigate supporting children with autism. While exercising more almost a universal goal, this month we learn more about what could be ruining our sleep and how to get help. Dr Nourah Alyouha explains what sleep apnea is, why it disrupts your health and what to do about it. Palestine is never not on our minds these days, and Deema Al Alami’s book 48 Stories of Exile, gives voice to Palestinian narratives and ignites a flame of empathy and understanding that transcends borders and resonates with hearts around the world.

Sustainability is another important issue, and our friends at IKEA invited us to their “Together for a Better Planet” Sustainability event at Shaheed Park. We spoke to Marino Maganto, CEO of IKEA Kuwait, Jordan, and Morocco, who told us all about IKEA’s commitment to doing better for the planet.

The issue is full of so much more fun things too, The new 2024 Porsche Panamera was just unveiled at Porsche Center Kuwait Shuwaikh, and it is a thing of power and beauty. Our friends at Xcite give us all the tools we need to stay fit this summer from the comfort of our own home or on the go so we hit our health goals. Our hair and nails are getting some extra TLC with tools from JLD Paris.

So jump right in and enjoy. Happy reading!

A NEW ERA OF SELLING

Building the future of commerce

In the dynamic world of global logistics, staying ahead means more than just going faster—it’s about innovating to redefine the future of commerce. That’s exactly what we do at Prologis. Since our founding more than 40 years ago, we’ve embraced bold ideas. And the courage to take calculated risks has propelled us to a pivotal global role. Facilitating an annual $2.7 trillion of goods (for more than 6,700 customers) through our distribution centers across four continents and 19 countries, we’re not just keeping up—we’re setting the pace.

At Prologis, our belief in “simplify and sprint” and “fail fast” foster an environment where experimentation isn’t just encouraged, it’s celebrated. Our innovation is driven by outsidethe-box thinking and is encapsulated in our motto: “Ahead of what’s next.”

INCUBATING INNOVATION

Fueling our contributions to supply chain innovation is Prologis Ventures, the innovation and corporate venture arm of the company. From Series A startups to growth-stage innovators, we leverage our extensive global network and deep expertise to invest in transformative technologies that are tackling the toughest supply chain challenges across operations, energy and mobility, property tech and construction, and the digital realm.

We also incubate new businesses that create significant enterprise value not just for Prologis, but our customers as well. Two examples: Prologis Mobility helps customers navigate the transition of commercial fleets to zero-emissions, while Terminal Industries uses the latest in AI and computer vision to digitize logistics yards for enhanced real-time visibility and control over transportation assets.

To date, we’ve invested more than $250 million in nearly 50 early- and growth-stage companies, helping our company and our customers stay ahead of new technology and drive innovation across the supply-chain spectrum.

BOOSTING PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFICIENCY

In the realm of operations and workforce efficiency, we have invested in businesses that are revolutionizing warehouse operations with cutting-edge robotics automation that brings a new approach to e-commerce fulfillment. Locus Robotics’ groundbreaking solutions, now deployed across dozens of Prologis customers’ fulfillment centers (including industry giants like DHL) have led to remarkable enhancements in productivity, order accuracy, and operational efficiency.

But supply chain innovation isn’t just about the present—it’s also about shaping a sustainable future. For example, our investment in a company like Solarcycle lets us leverage their proprietary process to reclaim solar panel

materials, addressing both end-of-life and supply chain challenges. Furthermore, our collaboration with Synop (for its EV-charging infrastructure) empowers our customers to embrace zeroemissions transportation as its software connects vehicles, chargers, and the grid to optimize energy management for commercial electric vehicle fleets.

A NEW WAY OF MANAGING RISK

With any new frontier also comes risk. In the recent past, we’ve seen firsthand the complexities and vulnerabilities of supply chains. By leveraging innovative solutions like Altana, an AI risk mapping software for global supply chains, our customers can navigate supply chain complexities and fortify their operations against unforeseen challenges. Undoubtedly, technology is transforming all aspects of the global supply chain—even as it relates to asset management and construction. Prologis’s investments into companies like SITE Technologies are reshaping how property managers analyze and manage assets. With drone imagery and AI analytics, SITE Technologies enables more efficient property condition analysis and procurement spend standardization, benefiting our extensive real estate portfolio. Prologis is also leveraging AI

technology from TestFit to expedite the design of project developments. TestFit’s real-time insights into design and costs empower Prologis to use data like never before and our customers to make more informed decisions to drive best-in-class outcomes.

A ROADMAP FOR THE FUTURE

Prologis’s commitment to innovation stems from our unique position at the intersection of the global supply chain—with unparalleled access to major retailers and logistics companies worldwide— which has given us a deep understanding of the pain points of our customers and drives collaborative innovative solutions.

We’re embarking on a new era of supply chain management. By embracing automation, sustainability, and digital transformation, we’re not just reshaping our own and our customers’ operations—we’re driving meaningful change across the entire supply chain and futureproofing our infrastructure along the way. And, as a strategic partner to our customers and visionary leader in the industry, Prologis is poised to continue shaping the future of the supply chain for years to come.

OFFICE TO RESIDENCE

Here’s the real reason more empty offices aren’t being converted into apartments

Underutilized office buildings, due to the surge of remote work, have increased the U.S. office vacancy rate to 13.5%, the highest level since 2000. Over the next decade, Goldman Sachs analysts expect the office vacancy rate to rise to 18%.

According to Goldman Sachs, about 4% of U.S. office buildings may no longer be viable. And in the cities most affected by remote work, between 14% and 16% of offices may no longer be viable. These are typically office buildings located in suburban areas or central business districts that were built more than 30 years ago, have not been renovated since 2000, and currently have vacancy rates exceeding 30%.

However, only 0.49% of office inventory was converted into multifamily units in 2023, compared to 0.23% in pre-pandemic 2019. Goldman Sachs expects that figure to rise to just 0.74% by 2028.

That’s according to a recent report published by Goldman Sachs, which concludes that the high costs of converting office buildings to multifamily housing units are hindering a more significant acceleration.

“The office-to-multifamily conversion rate is [still] quite low, suggesting that there may

be substantial financial and physical hurdles to conversion,” wrote Goldman Sachs analysts Vinay Viswanathan and Elsie Peng in the report.

According to analysts at Goldman Sachs, office prices still haven’t fallen enough to entice developers to do more conversions.

Goldman Sachs analysts found that: “For the top 5 metropolitan areas that are most affected by remote work, we estimate that office acquisition prices would need to fall almost 50% for conversion to be financially feasible. This suggests that most of these offices will likely remain underutilized in the near term.”

In part, office prices haven’t fallen further because institutional barriers to reevaluating office space have resulted in many lenders extending or modifying office mortgages that might otherwise default. As a result, forced property sales that would have otherwise already happened have not occurred.

The report states that another obstacle to conversion is safety codes. Residential building codes require bedrooms to have certain sizes of windows, but it is impossible to restructure some office buildings with deep floor plates—common in large buildings—in a way that provides all units with proper windows, Goldman Sachs analysts explain. Additionally, transforming an office’s existing plumbing, ventilation, and electric system for each residential unit can be challenging.

“The annual conversion rate from office to multifamily will remain low and only increase slowly to 0.74% in the next four years, delivering about 20,000 additional multifamily units per year,” wrote Goldman Sachs. That’s a drop in the bucket compared to the total of 468,000 multifamily units that were built in 2023.

MEET ABDULAZIZ ALHUNAIYYAN

Getting Up Close and Personal with the funky illustrator

Meet Abdulaziz AlHunaiyyan, an ambitious illustrator and individual with a penchant for productivity. Whether he’s immersed in his artwork or tackling tasks in his day job as a home décor buyer and engineer in the private sector Abdulaziz’s passion for art shines through. When he’s not at work or on the university campus, you’ll likely find him nestled in a cozy coffee shop, pouring his creativity into a new project.

Despite not being a full-time artist, Abdulaziz seamlessly integrates his design skills into his professional life, crafting his own cushions, rugs, and doormats with flair. He sees art and design as complementary forces, each enhancing the other in a harmonious blend of creativity and functionality. Proudly self-taught, Abdulaziz embraces his journey of continuous learning, finding fulfillment in the process of honing his craft and bringing his artistic visions to life.

“My art is a funky take of Kuwait in various generations and decades, it tells unique stories with many interpretations, and I almost always draw people or even portraits, rarely would I draw abstracts or patterns. It’s a slightly more realistic motifs drawn in a traditional 2D cartoony feel. I feel that it happens to my design strength and is an advantage for me when comparing me to the market,” he explains.

With a lifelong passion for art, Abdulaziz’s creative journey began at a young age. Exploring various mediums, he found joy in painting and experimenting with different techniques. His formal art education further expanded his horizons, introducing him to a plethora of unique mediums and styles. Abdulaziz’s creativity soared to new heights when he received his own iPad and Pencil six years ago. Since then, these tools have become indispensable companions on his artistic odyssey, allowing him to seamlessly translate his

ideas into digital masterpieces. From creating basic cartoons with free computer software to orchestrating movie nights with his cousins, Abdulaziz’s artistic endeavors have always been a source of joy and nostalgia, marking cherished moments of his childhood. Today, fueled by a deeprooted passion and armed with modern technology, Abdulaziz continues to pursue his artistic vision, blending traditional and digital techniques to create captivating works of art.

“My inspiration is drawn from Walt Disney’s classic cartoons, most notably Sleeping Beauty, the artistic details in that movie were impeccable, and it showed me that the devil is in the details! Recently, my inspiration has been from Pinterest of observing individuals taking photos in traditional settings, such as Al Mubarakiya in Kuwait, Souq Waqif in Qatar, and the endless touristic locations with an old vibe in Saudi Arabia with traditional clothes. There isn’t a certain artist I gather inspiration from quite honestly,” Abdulaziz explains.

36
up close & personal

When Abdulaziz starts a project, he starts with understanding the overall theme, and tends to work on multiple artworks at the same time to harmonize the concept together. Whether using the same element, or using the same individual in many settings, or having a theme such as the 80s or 90s, etc. He then takes a look at social media for composition ideas, sometimes he poses and takes photos for references. Next, he tries to fit a background, for example, an 80s living room from a TV show, a vintage room in a museum, or even getting a reference image online, which he then changes to fit his image.

“I feel like the 80s is a very vague theme, as my illustrations could easily go with any of the decades. It’s just that I believe the 80s has a lot of great references, especially in Kuwait’s culture such as the locations, restaurants, pop culture like TV shows and movies, it was a booming time and I absolutely love researching; therefore it blends perfectly with my vision,” he elaborates.

Transitioning from traditional painting to a whimsical, cartoony style, Abdulaziz AlHunaiyyan’s artistic evolution reflects a journey of exploration and self-discovery. While his earlier works leaned towards realism, he found the process time-consuming and the outcomes conventional. Embracing his love for illustration, Abdulaziz gravitated towards a more imaginative approach, infusing his art with vibrant colors and playful characters. Yet, amidst the evolution of his style, he harbored a desire to explore watercolorstyle digital art, intrigued by its expressive possibilities. Reflecting on his artistic path, Abdulaziz embraces every mistake as a valuable lesson, recognizing that each trial and error has contributed to his growth as an artist. With unwavering determination, he remains steadfast in his commitment to his craft, knowing that the journey he has embarked upon is leading him towards a fulfilling destination. If given the chance to advise his past self, Abdulaziz would offer a simple yet profound message: stay true to the path you’re on, for every step forward is a testament to the journey’s ultimate reward.

“I do feel like some of the art I present is a little too repetitive, there are so many untouched territories and I definitely do not want to miss out on it by switching my style or concept completely. Finding composition ideas is also a bit of a struggle, I have so many scrapped designs that I did not post anywhere because I felt it was disjointed with the whatever it is that I’m delivering,” Abdulaziz tells us.

We love how Abdulaziz is just getting started and ready for more. “I have many hopes for the future! Such as seeing my art highlighted in galleries and exhibitions, I would love to collaborate with companies in delivering a funky art style for whatever project they have in mind, For example designing menus, Instagram posts, magazine covers. I have plans on potentially creating my own board game and I would be designing the entire thing, from characters, to instructions, to the box art, etc. I also plan on growing my art channel, delivering video tutorials and more seasonal content!,” he tells us.

PLASTIC BEGONE

What would it take to ditch single-use plastic?

Of the 400-million-plus tons of plastic that the world produces each year, more than a third is only used once before it’s thrown out. Each minute, by some estimates, the equivalent of a garbage truck full of plastic waste ends up in the ocean. Most single-use plastic ends up in landfills after a few minutes of use by consumers, wasting the money and CO2 emissions that went into making it.

But some single-use plastic can easily be eliminated, and other plastic packaging can be replaced by reuse systems or other materials. This week, as leaders meet to take the next steps to negotiate the world’s first global plastic pollution treaty, we took a look at some of the ways to begin phasing out single-use plastic.

Scaling up reuse

Over the last few years, big brands and retailers have experimented with reusable packaging. Some tested new packaging, including stainless steel packaging for Haagen-Dasz ice cream and Pantene shampoo, as well as systems designed to collect, sanitize, and reuse the containers. Starbucks is testing takeout cups that can be dropped in a bin and reused. Smaller zero-waste stores, focused on selling package-free products, keep growing. Startups have pioneered new products like cleaning tablets that can be added to reusable glass bottles, eliminating the need to ship plastic bottles that are filled mainly with water.

Right now, all of this is still happening at a

small scale. Some pilots with large brands at retail stores ran for a short time but never became permanent. For reuse to succeed, companies need to collaborate to build much larger systems.

“We need scaled infrastructure and shared infrastructure,” says Marta Longhurst from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, an organization that helps companies shift to the circular economy. “Not every business creating their own reuse models and their own collection facilities and washing facilities, but businesses collaborating and sharing that.”

For reuse to work at scale, she says, it also makes sense to have standardized packages for different product types. (To differentiate brands, companies would have to rely more on labels.) Having one large system would also make it easier for consumers to return packaging, another crucial part of making reuse work.

The organization is pushing for the global treaty to include guidelines and targets for reuse. “That would really send a clear signal to the stakeholders and to the market about the future of reuse, and

enable channeling of investment,” Longhurst says.

Eliminate unnecessary plastic

Some plastic packaging doesn’t need to exist—for example, individually-wrapped bananas. Clothes shipped in a box arguably don’t need to also be in plastic wrap. It’s possible to sell multipacks of products without wrapping the whole thing in plastic. Tesco, a large U.K. supermarket chain, eliminated 45 million pieces of plastic just by ditching multipack versions of some of its drinks. (Customers still get a discount when buying the drinks in quantity.)

When the nonprofit Ocean Conservancy studied the types of plastic that it found most often in decades of beach cleanups, it highlighted a handful of products that could be eliminated. Plastic shopping bags can easily be replaced; one recent report found that bag bans in five states and cities in the U.S. eliminated around 6 billion bags per year. Ocean Conservancy’s list of products also includes plastic utensils and straws and expanded

40
[Continued...]

polystyrene, better known as Styrofoam. “A lot of these items are just so pervasive and pernicious that there’s not a good solution other than to get rid of them,” says Anja Brandon, associate director of U.S. plastics policy at Ocean Conservancy.

The nonprofit, which pushed for a bill in California that requires companies to make a 25% cut in single-use plastic packaging, is advocating for the treaty to include a goal to cut single-use plastic by 50% by 2050. “I have no doubt that businesses are smart and creative and clever and will still figure out how to sell their products under new global rules,” she says.

WWF and other groups want the treaty to include criteria for which plastic should be phased out. “We don’t have replacements for all single-use plastic today, so the way we start phasing down is by looking at a set of risk criteria,” says Erin Simon, the lead on plastic and business at WWF. The list could include how likely a product or type of plastic is to end up in the environment, how hard it is to recycle, and how dangerous it is for nature or human health based on its chemistry.

Design new packaging

Companies are starting to find better alternatives to single-use plastic—sometimes in surprising ways. The plastic industry likes to tout the fact that plastic can help keep food fresh longer and prevent food waste. But a startup called Apeel, and others in the space, have designed edible coatings that can

protect produce without the need for an extra layer of plastic. A single produce supplier can eliminate tens of thousands of pounds of plastic a year by using the product.

Brands like Heinz and Estée Lauder are testing paper bottles that can eliminate plastic packaging (without getting soggy). Mars, the candy giant, started testing paper wrappers for candy bars last year. Other companies are redesigning products so they don’t need plastic bottles—like shampoo bars instead of liquid shampoo, or toothpaste tablets instead of regular toothpaste. Amazon redesigned some mailers to eliminate plastic Bubble Wrap.

While it’s arguably possible to find creative ways to replace almost all single-use plastic in packaging, other forms of single-use plastic—like the gloves and masks that became ubiquitous during the pandemic—need to be designed for recycling or composting. “Plastics right now are not designed to be recycled,” says Brandon. “So it’s no wonder our recycling system is so broken.” The treaty should also include design guidance for manufacturers, she says.

Though some people argue that recycling can never work, Brandon says it needs to be one part of the solution. “This is not an either or question,” she says. “This is a ‘yes, and . . . ‘ We need to be doing all of it to really move the needle on this issue. Quite frankly, we are running out of time. So yes, we need to start with reduction. And yes, we need to improve our recycling system at the same time

to make sure that we can decrease our dependency on the fossil fuels that plastics are actually made out of.”

The next steps at the treaty negotiations

Two years ago, UN delegates agreed to create a legally binding treaty to tackle plastic pollution. This week’s meeting is the fourth so far; in the previous three meetings, negotiators didn’t make progress on substantive issues. Now, they hope to finally negotiate about the text. The treaty is supposed to be finalized this year.

“Our hope is that this week we will take that last chance to really prevent the irreversible economic, health, and environmental damage that plastic pollution is having today, and not kick it down the road,” says Simon. Globally, she says, there’s widespread support for action. In a survey of 24,000 people in 32 countries, the organization found that 85% of people support a ban on unnecessary single-use plastic.

“This whole treaty process has been happening at breakneck pace, from the original resolution a few years ago to now, trying to wrap this treaty up by the end of this year,” says Brandon. “It’s really great to see countries and policymakers from around the world recognize the urgency at this moment and say so in their statements. You hear words like crisis and urgency. And that gives me a lot of hope.”

DEEMA AL ALAMI’S JOURNEY THROUGH 48 STORIES

A voice of remembrance

In a world where stories often blur into the background of noise, there are those like Deema Al Alami who refuse to let them fade away. With her book, “48 Stories of Exile from Palestine,” Deema sheds light on the voices of Palestinians forced to leave their homeland, each narrative a testament to the endurance of the human spirit.

As we look into the book by Deema, we can sense the depth of emotion woven into every page of her book. “These stories are not just tales of exile,” she shares, “but windows into the lives of individuals who have carried the weight of displacement for generations.”

Deema’s journey into writing began as a personal quest to understand her own roots. “Growing up in the diaspora, I always felt a sense of longing for a place I had never known,” she shares. “Writing became my way of grappling with that longing and connecting with my identity as a Palestinian.”

“48 Stories of Exile from Palestine” is not just a collection of narratives; it’s a mosaic of experiences spanning decades. “Each story is a thread in the fabric of Palestinian history,” Deema explains. “From the Nakba to the present day, these voices speak of loss, resilience, and the enduring hope for a homeland.” Driven by a passion for human connection and empathy, Deema embarked on a mission to amplify the voices of Palestinians through storytelling. “Witnessing acts of kindness among people inspires me,” she confides. “It’s a reminder of the beauty and resilience inherent in humanity.”

With a background in education spanning over 17 years, Deema’s journey into writing was a natural evolution of her commitment to empowering others through knowledge and understanding. “Education has always been my compass,” she shares. “It’s a powerful tool for fostering empathy and shaping compassionate individuals.”

[Continued...]

The process of compiling these stories was both enlightening and emotional for Deema. “I immersed myself in countless conversations with Palestinians from all walks of life,” she recalls. “Each story carried its own weight, its own pain, but also its own resilience.” One of the most profound aspects of Deema’s book is its ability to humanize a narrative often reduced to statistics and politics. “These are not just numbers,” she emphasizes. “They are mothers, fathers, children—each with dreams, fears, and aspirations.” It is a truly touching book, and it really shines a light on the emotions that we are all feeling during these difficult times.

Crafting the book was a labor of love, as Deema, the editors, the lead editor: Fatima Al Saad and Co Producer Nahla Al Malki, meticulously sifted through submissions from individuals eager to share their stories of exile. “Each story felt like a window into the lives and struggles of those who had become like family to me,” she reflects.

Navigating the balance between individual narratives and broader historical or political contexts was essential for Deema. “My goal was to offer personalized stories that serve as the heart of every narrative,” she explains. “Through these stories, readers gain a deeper understanding of the Palestinian experience beyond the headlines.”

We all know that in today’s socio-political climate, the sharing and amplification of Palestinian stories are more important than ever. “These stories serve as a reminder of our shared humanity and the universal quest for justice and dignity,” Deema asserts.

As readers embark on this emotional journey through “48 Stories of Exile from Palestine,” Deema hopes to spark meaningful dialogue and action towards justice and equality for all. “Every story matters,” she concludes. “And it’s through storytelling that we can pave the way for a more compassionate and empathetic world.”

Through “48 Stories of Exile from Palestine,” Deema Al Alami has not only given voice to Palestinian narratives but has also ignited a flame of empathy and understanding that transcends borders and resonates with hearts around the world.

Deema gifted the the 1st edition copies (5000) to PCRF (Palestinians Children’s Relief Fund), they have full ownership of the books and are now selling them via the website www.48stories.com they will use all of the sales money (after deducting warehousing and processing fees) to a restricted fund to support Palestinian orphans and amputees in Gaza. LEADING THE WAY WITH PLATINUM LEED CERTIFICATION

Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait At Burj Alshaya Celebrates Prestigious Environmental Achievement

Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya continues to set the standard for responsible tourism and hospitality in the Middle East by becoming the first and only hotel in Kuwait to achieve Platinum certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

One of the industry’s most prestigious accolades in the drive towards a greener future, LEED is the world’s most widely recognized and independently verified green building rating system.

The certification marks both the Hotel and the 140,000-square-metre (1.5-million-square-foot) Burj Alshaya complex in which it is located as only one of two buildings in the country to have received the LEED Platinum certification – the highest of LEED’s three-tier levels after Silver and Gold. Burj Alshaya also includes the head office of Alshaya Group and offices for many of Kuwait’s prestigious businesses.

Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya is one of the most striking hotels in the world: a sleek, avant-garde address with a distinctly modern vision of Middle Eastern design that has been devoted to sustainable practices since it opened its doors in the summer of 2017.

Innovative on-site sustainability initiatives that contributed to its Platinum LEED certification include on-site water bottling, extensive recycling, AI-driven waste management, the elimination of single-use plastics and Styrofoam, energy consumption tracking and carbon footprint measurement.

In addition, the Hotel offers complimentary e-charging stations for guests’ electric vehicles and uses eco-friendly key cards instead of plastic alternatives while its first e-limousine is due to cruise into use in 2024.

LEED-certified green buildings are better buildings

Since its inception in 1998, the US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED certification has emerged as a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement, supported by an entire industry of committed organizations and individuals paving the way for market transformation.

48

“LEED Platinum certification highlights the importance that both Alshaya group and Four Seasons alike place on the environment and sustainability. It represents the efforts of everyone involved with the hotel and its environment and is also a recognition of the willingness of our guests to work with us in creating a greener future.”

Community at the core

Beyond its sustainable design features and watersaving initiatives, the team at Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya practices responsible hospitality through community initiatives; 2023’s events included fun-filled family events at the Bayt Abdullah Children’s Hospice (BACCH) and a beach clean-up that saw the Hotel’s ‘Four Seasons For Good’ team restore the local beach to a pristine condition.

As the world’s leading operator of luxury hotels, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts currently manages 128 hotels and resorts and 53 residential properties in 47 countries. LEED Platinum certification is a prestigious international accolade that stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of Four Seasons to upholding the highest global standards of excellence across every aspect of hospitality. The group is dedicated to pioneering a forward-looking approach that leaves a positive legacy on the world, uniting a meaningful vision of luxury with responsible practices and sustainability initiatives.

5 signs you should definitely look for a new job

We all encounter challenges at work. Some of them are simply obstacles that must be overcome. Do so, and your job satisfaction will likely rise. But other difficulties are signs that you should dust off your résumé and look for a new job. It’s important to know the difference.

Here are five situations that indicate it’s time to move on:

1.

YOU HAVE A BAD BOSS

Fifty percent of people say they’ve quit a job because of a bad boss, but there are many ways a boss can be “bad.”

Early in my career, I reported to an executive who undermined me in every way he could. When we traveled, he even criticized me for not walking fast enough. Nothing I did received his approval. Nobody would speak up in meetings because he would shoot them down. I asked myself, “Is this a person I want to work for?”

My answer was no, but there was a catch: He was a strong mentor who taught me a lot about speech writing. I had to balance the good and the bad. As a result, I stayed on for two years, until I had learned what I needed to from him. Assess your bad boss and move on when it suits your goals.

2.

YOUR BOSS IS NEEDY

This situation is often difficult to navigate. A needy boss can make you feel valued because he or she is likely to say, “I need you here,” or “Thanks for doing that extra work on the weekend.” Such bosses, while appreciative, can be detrimental to your career because they encourage you to stay in place and never move on.

I once coached a woman in a bank who was at the director level, and she had an opportunity to move on to a VP position in another department. But when she told her boss about this opportunity he said, “Don’t take it; I need you here.” So she stayed with him, and 10 years later she was still with him in that director position.

Needy bosses can make you feel important, and they sincerely believe in you. But beware: They prefer that you stay put and not move on in their department or in any other. They are career crushers. Don’t let them blindside your career.

3. YOUR JOB IS BORING

The third situation you should move on from is a boring job.

Take some time to figure out what makes your job boring. Perhaps it’s because the work is repetitious; you’ve mastered it and find no excitement from it. Or you may find the people in your department boring. There’s no pleasure in being with them, no collegiality.

If you experience boredom in your current role and there’s no room to make your job more interesting, it’s time to move on. You will die on the vine if you stay, and the longer you stay the more difficult it will be to “sell” yourself to the next employer. As I write in my latest book, The Job Seeker’s Script, you have to approach job interviews by telling an exciting story about yourself. Being bored will kill your chances of doing so and getting hired.

4. YOU ARE INVISIBLE

The fourth job situation you’ll want to exit from is invisibility. To be promotable, you need people to see your accomplishments.

To be seen you must take on new initiatives and successfully lead projects, regardless of your level. Indra Nooyi, PepsiCo’s former CEO, tells people in her autobiography, My Life in Full, to “become visible to people outside your work group. People should be saying, ‘You know, she really did a fantastic job.’”

Ask yourself whether the work you are doing is recognized as important and valuable. If no one sees what you’re doing, you’ll reap no rewards from your work.

Does your boss give credit to you in front of others when you’ve done something that makes a difference? Do you get to meet with the executive you’ve prepared a report for? Do other leaders

or department heads know the impact of your work? In short, is your contribution recognized by others? If not, it’s time to move on.

5. THE JOB IS A POOR FIT

Fifth, if your current job doesn’t fit your interests and aspirations, you should start looking for something different.

You may be a specialist who has been promoted into management, but you really want to be a specialist. Or you may yearn to lead a team, but you haven’t been given an opportunity to do so. Or you may feel at odds with the culture at your current company. Adam Grant says it’s always good to ask yourself: “Do I want to become more like the people here?” If not, start thinking about other possibilities.

If your current position is a poor fit, you probably won’t do your best work or receive favorable recommendations from your boss and others. And staying is likely to derail your career. You may find it easier to “settle” and live with a poor fit, but in the long run you won’t reach career nirvana if you stay put. Undertake the selfanalysis that will lead to positive change, and have the courage to seek out positions where you can flourish.

TRUTH OR DARE WITH AMANY

Storytelling with puppets

The world is full of interesting passionate people who remind us that there is so much compassion, whimsy and fun around us. Just like Amany Yousef AbdulNour, a ventriloquist and a puppeteer who has a valuable message for children all around the world. She performs puppet shows and Radio and TV programs for children.

Amany started puppeteering in 2015 and with the help of two wonderful cast members; sound engineer, Wael Karim and musician, Micheal Makram, she was inspired to start a useful puppetshow for little friends!

“I was very passionate about studying puppetry and ventriloquism, so I worked hard on practicing the art of ventriloquism and was able to become a professional puppeteer. We were motivated by the great need of our children who miss getting involved in social activities, rather than their addiction to digital tablets and electronic devices. And to convey positive ideas by sharing with them a message about God’s love for each one of them, and to teach them good behavior and morals,” Amany explains.

Her art is backed up by education as she studied drama, short story analysis and writing, criticism and translation, and holds a bachelor’s of arts in “Arts and English Literature” from Ain Shams University in Cairo. But she hasn’t stopped there, she continues to learn and grow so she can improve

her craft. “I did courses in parenting and counseling on “How to raise effective children in a defective world” and completed other business courses in HR, professional narration and Voice-Over in Arabic: Khaliji, Lebanese, Egyptian & English, and the Art of Writing course,” Amany continues.

The stage puppets are handmade by a specialized team who make and sew them. Amany also hosts workshops that guide teachers and children how to make their own puppets, transform stories into a script, and perform their own puppet shows on stage. The puppets that they use were specially made to match the culture, for easier communication and to socialize with kids in the Gulf, especially since the team travels all over the region to perform.

56
truth or dare

It takes a special talent to imagine the character that will communicate the messages that Amany wants to convey to the audience. She gets inspired by the culture in which the puppet will perform. She tells us that kids enjoy and love funny and smart characters. Choosing the right voice for the puppet is important too. It has to match the character to give credibility to the puppet. For example, a grumpy, hoarse, loud voice won’t work with a tiny delicate puppet. It takes skill and talent to deliver a consistent voice for each character while switching between them during a performance. “I worked with many radio stations and production studios, and still do advertisements, feature films, and dubbing for movies. I also do the tannoy flight announcements at airports, and answering machines at call centers too… this gave me the experience to know how to switch between voices to match with the occassion,” she explains.

The heart of any performance, though, is the story, and Amany finds inspiration in lots of places. Some stories are taken from real life; such as the sad tragedies of bullying that break the hearts of many children. “I talk about the importance of building your own self-esteem and never trusting the lies that come from the negative minds of bullies,” she says.

Amany’s stories and shows are all driven by a core message; as a child you are loved by God. She wants to teach children to see blessings, practice gratitude and trust that Allah’s gifts and mercies are plentiful. Some stories are taken from old children’s books to match the theme of the performance of that particular show, others are written by Amany herself. But her main goal is to always deliver a lesson or a moral that can be easily digested by kids.

“I have had lots of positive feedback from children who came back to me, after the show, and were excited to tell me how this show touched their hearts and that they received a powerful message that made them trust in their own abilities and ignore all the negative opinions! And that made me eager to reach out to more children and convey optimistic and positive messages through this puppet show performance,” Amany explains.

While her main audience is children, parents who attend the puppet show performances enjoy the shows as much as the kids and when they meet her after the show, tell her how they wish that there were more shows like them performed at schools to make learning more fun. Amany tells us that the best thing about puppeteering is that she gets the opportunity to meet children from different cultures and interact with them face-to-face. “I feel blessed to share positive thoughts to help children face the difficulties in life, and draw a smile on their little faces,” she explains.

Amany’s puppet show is growing. She has plans to do more traveling to share her stories and characters with more kids in the region and is currently working on a new podcast in the form of short reels that aim to answer questions from their little friends, who are facing challenges with parents and friends.

We can’t wait to see more of her and her great puppets.

TRUST ON THE INTERNET

There’s a simple reason you don’t believe the influencers in your feed

It turns out there are some benefits to having a smaller social media following. According to a new study published in the Journal of Marketing, influencers with fewer followers have a little more leeway when it comes to the language they use to shill their wares. Researchers found that followers on social media reacted more positively to sponsored posts from influencers who used exclamation points, emoji, and “high-arousal language”—or words like “amazing,” “sensational,” and ”superb“—if they had fewer followers.

Researchers at LUISS Guido Carli University in Italy surveyed 20,923 sponsored Instagram posts made by 1,376 influencers in the U.S. They found that for macro influencers, or those with more than 100,000 followers, a 10% increase in high-arousal language led to an 8.4% reduction in engagement. By comparison, “micro” influencers who have fewer than 100,000 followers saw a 5.4% increase in engagement when they increased high-arousal language by 10%.

The findings are a fascinating prism into human psychology. Despite all influencers selling their followers something, it only felt that way when it came from macro influencers. “Consumers typically see micro influencers as regular people, so if they say something like

‘this shake is AMAZING!’ consumers believe they really are excited about that shake and just want to share this discovery with their friends and followers,” the study’s authors wrote.

For macro influencers, though, “consumers know these influencers receive substantial sums to say positive things about products, so they judge their posts as an attempt to persuade, just like any other form of advertising.”

While the study focused on Instagram, researchers found a similar phenomenon on TikTok where macro influencers who used a higher pitched voice (used as a stand-in for higharousal language) in their videos saw a decline in engagement.

To increase trust, the study suggests

influencers are better off easing up on the hard sell. They found that highly followed influencers who made their posts informative saw a 1.8% bump in engagement. Language like “learn” and “help” can offset some of the negative effects of writing enthusiastically about a product. And if all else fails, showing a healthy dose of skepticism can help too. Including details about negative or concerning aspects of a product increased engagement for macro influencers. I guess it pays to be honest.

A PARENT’S JOURNEY THROUGH AUTISM WITH DR. RON

Pioneering Autism Treatment and Advocacy as a clinical psychologist and the Co-Founder of the Autism Partnership Foundation

Dr. Ronald Leaf stands as a beacon of hope and innovation in the field of autism treatment and advocacy. With a career spanning over four decades, Dr. Leaf has dedicated his life to improving the lives of individuals on the autism spectrum and their families through groundbreaking research, compassionate care, and tireless advocacy.

68

A clinical psychologist by training, Dr. Leaf’s journey into the world of autism began early in his career when he witnessed the profound challenges faced by individuals with autism and their families. Motivated by a deep sense of compassion and a commitment to making a difference, he embarked on a mission to unravel the complexities of autism and develop effective interventions to support those affected by it.

In collaboration with his colleague Dr. John McEachin, Dr. Leaf pioneered the development of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for autism. Their innovative approach focused on using the principles of behavior analysis to teach new skills and reduce challenging behaviors in individuals with autism. Through rigorous research and clinical practice, they demonstrated the effectiveness of ABA therapy in improving outcomes for individuals across the autism spectrum, revolutionizing the field of autism treatment in the process.

Beyond his contributions to clinical practice, Dr. Leaf is a passionate advocate for individuals with autism and their families. He has tirelessly campaigned for greater awareness, acceptance, and access to services for individuals on the autism spectrum, championing their rights and dignity every step of the way.

As the co-founder of Autism Partnership Foundation, Dr. Leaf continues to lead the charge in advancing autism research, training the next generation of autism professionals, and providing support to individuals and families affected by autism worldwide. His unwavering dedication and pioneering spirit serve as an inspiration to all those touched by autism, reminding us that with compassion, innovation, and perseverance, anything is possible.

We were lucky enough to interview him to learn more about him and his journey.

Did you always know you wanted to become a psychologist?

Actually, I wanted to be an attorney. However, in 1973 by chance I took a psychology class, and the professor (Ivar Lovaas) was a pioneer in the treatment of Autis I was fascinated by Autism and thrilled about the results he was achieving. So, I decided that I want to become a psychologist, specialize in Autism and help children and their families.

What inspired you to start the Autism Partnership organization?

The services that were being provided for children with Autism were poor and therefore children were not attaining the outcomes that were possible. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have amazing potential. With high-quality treatment, the majority of children can become conversational, have long-lasting and meaningful friendships and achieve a high quality of life. However, without such treatment children and their families’ lives were

being compromised. So, I thought the best way to help children and their families was to create and agency that was devoted to Autism.

What made you want to expand in Kuwait?

There simply weren’t quality services for children with ASD in Kuwait. I felt the children and families in Kuwait deserved to have access to high quality services. Additionally, there was tremendous amount of misinformation regarding Diagnosis, Prognosis and Treatment which was leading parents away from receiving quality treatment.

How can AP help parents/educators/caregivers?

AP provides high quality treatment directly to children thereby helping them reach their potential. Furthermore, we provide support to parents and caregivers. Finally, we provide training to professionals and educators.

When should parents consider a doctor’s opinion? What symptoms or signs should they be looking for?

They should only consider a doctor’s opinion when they have expertise in ASD. That they are knowledge about the vast research regarding diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. That they truly understand the potential of children with ASD and treatment that is vital for their success.

The signs of ASD are delays in communication, deficits in social skills and challenging behaviors that interfere with their development and learning. Autism is a spectrum disorder in that there is a large range of skills and deficits. There are children with ASD that have no vocal language and there are children with good communication skills. Similarly, there are children with no social interest and those who are quite socially interested. Thus, diagnosticians have to be well trained in recognizing the spectrum of ASD.

Can you walk us through the process of getting a diagnosis for Autism?

Diagnosis is based primarily on the child’s developmental history which is provided by parents as well as observations of the child in multiple settings. Although there are measures such as the ADOS that can be helpful in the diagnosis, it is primarily based upon the expertise of the diagnostician.

What are the greatest challenges that face a child during diagnosis/treatment?

Expertise in both areas. Diagnostically, someone that truly understand the full spectrum of ASD and the differential diagnosis of other childhood disorders such as ASD and Intellectual Impairment. In terms of treatment, someone who is well trained in Progressive Applied Behavior Analysis.

What are the challenges that parents face?

The first challenge is finding an expert diagnostician that truly understands that Autism is a spectrum disorder. The next challenge is sifting through all the misinformation regarding treatment. There are literally hundreds of treatments that are touted as being successful. For example, parents will hear that dietary treatments, medications, animal therapies, sensory treatments are effective. Tragically, these treatments are not evidenced based and have not proved to be successful. Not only are they costly in money, time and emotions, but they can compromise the lives of children and their families.

How can parents better support their child during this journey, and how can they support themselves?

Finding professionals that are experts in ASD as evidenced by the research they have conducted and the outcomes of their clients. Additionally, that they are adept at providing parent support.

LEND A HELPING HAND

A key ingredient for a happy workforce

According to the Gallup World Poll for the World Happiness Report 2024, America has fallen out of the top 20 happiest countries for the first time. This is not surprising considering the rising costs of living, a daily barrage of unsettling news reports, and the lingering effects of loneliness from the pandemic. Social media, particularly for Gen Z and millennials, has replaced much-needed in-person interactions and oftentimes creates a feeling of missing out. And, while most of corporate America has returned to the office, we still find ourselves spending a disproportionate amount of time at our desks on Zoom calls, as opposed to gathering in a conference room.

One way that companies can help navigate these challenges is by fostering communitybuilding activities in the workplace and providing employees with social purpose. With National Volunteer Month in April, now is a perfect moment to reflect on the benefits of a strong corporate volunteer program that enables employees to make a tangible positive difference in our world.

Volunteering enriches employees

A recent study by Ares Management Corporation investigated the effects of workplace volunteer programs, conducting extensive interviews with more than 5,100 employees across five countries. It’s obvious that volunteering one’s time and expertise to help others benefits those on the receiving end. The goal of this study was to “understand how workplace volunteer programs empower employees to be change agents—not just for others, but also for themselves.” In other words, how do acts of selflessness transform the givers, and how can those effects be measured?

The results are significant and underscore the fact that volunteering enriches the lives of both the recipients and the volunteers. According to the study, employees who participate in workplace volunteer programs are more likely than nonparticipants to express satisfaction with their jobs (79% versus 55%), more likely to be satisfied with their opportunities for professional growth (70% versus 39%), and more likely to be satisfied with their salary and benefits (69% versus 45%). The survey also showed that employees who volunteer are twice as likely to recommend their company to prospective employees.

Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised at these results. I’m sure we’ve all experienced the warm sense of satisfaction that comes from serving others.

Offer time away from the office to volunteer

One of the best examples of the positive impact that volunteering has on volunteers is the program at buildOn. This nonprofit organization has an innovative model that seeks to help break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy by providing youth from under-resourced communities with volunteer opportunities. Through service work with buildOn, kids learn courage, resilience, empathy, and passion for what’s possible.

BuildOn emphasizes that its impact is not what the organization itself does for students, but rather what the students do for themselves, their communities, and our world.

IBM is also a leader in this space, recognizing the benefits of investing in community service for its employees. The company sponsors its employees on multi-week service projects in developing countries. Enabling volunteers to take considerable time away from the office to travel abroad to make an impact, creates a lifechanging experience for both the workers and the communities they are supporting.

Virginia Tenpenny, president, North America, and chief impact officer of Goodera, a leading volunteer-management company, says, “As more companies recognize the employee-engagement benefits of volunteerism, they are shifting from one-off annual volunteer events to strategies that make volunteering a regular part of the employee experience and rhythm of business. For example, Airbnb incorporates volunteering as part of newhire onboarding as well as in team events and company gatherings.”

Make it easy for employees to volunteer

I can personally relate to the profound impact that service has had in my life and am thankful that my company provided most of these opportunities. As a working mom, it was not always easy for me to find time for volunteering. A particularly memorable and rewarding team outing entailed a visit to Covenant House in New York City. Along with my teammates, we served lunch to homeless youth and spent time sharing stories and offering counsel. I walked away from the experience feeling hopeful that I may have helped brighten a teen’s day in some small way during our time together.

Today, I have the privilege of overseeing NBCUniversal’s social impact efforts. I am incredibly inspired by the sheer volume of volunteers we attract to each event. In 2023 alone, we filled 13,000 volunteer slots. I have heard time and again from our volunteers that they come away from volunteer experiences having gained more than they’ve given. I suspect this is similar at most companies, which explains why participation rates are climbing. Benevity’s

The State of Corporate Volunteering report points out that global employee volunteering has surged in the last three years, up 57% in 2023.

So, this month, in honor of National Volunteer Month, I encourage you to think about how you and your company can benefit from a robust workplace volunteer program. Especially in times like today, when we face so many worries and stresses that are out of our control, volunteering offers a mental boost by bringing people together and giving them a way to make a positive difference. And there is no more meaningful way to move the needle on employee wellness and satisfaction.

YOU’RE NOT IMAGINING IT

Your allergies are getting worse

If you’ve sensed that your allergies are getting worse each year, it’s not your imagination: Allergy season in the U.S. is getting longer and more intense. You can thank climate change for your misery. And yet we’re not doing enough — to slow down climate change, of course, but to recognize and respond to its very clear health effects.

These weigh on the economy, too. Estimates for direct costs, for things like antihistamines and inhalers, and indirect ones, for office absences or lower productivity, range in the billions of dollars. And while much of the research stems from an era when better allergy meds were just being introduced, one more recent study out of Sweden found that was costing the country of 9.5 million people upwards of 1.3 billion euros per year.

Allergies are a prime example of a common condition getting worse because of a warmer world. “When you turn up the temperatures on plants, especially in a controlled setting like a greenhouse, or you increase carbon dioxide concentrations, plants put out quite a bit more pollen,” explains William Anderegg, director of the Wilkes Center for Climate Science and Policy at the University of Utah.

Anderegg conducted an oft-cited study of pollen trends that found seasons now start 20 days earlier than they did in 1990, and last about 8 days longer. Meanwhile, there’s about 20% more pollen filling the air. Much of that shift is due to climate change.

“Pollen is a really clear example of how climate change is with us here and now, in our backyards and already affecting our health,” he says.

That could have real ramifications for the quarter of adults and nearly 20% of children in the U.S. with seasonal allergies. They will be wheezier and sneezier for more of the year. And they might be caught unprepared when allergens appear earlier than expected (to be most effective, allergy medicine should be taken before exposure).

When the lungs are aggravated by pollen, it can make people more vulnerable to certain illnesses, like the common cold and sinus infections. And it’s downright dangerous for people with asthma: An analysis of asthma patients Maryland found that very early-onset spring led to a 17% increase in hospitalizations.

As the climate worsens, so too could pollen’s health effects. A 2019 study found that tree and grass pollen combined were responsible for some 35,000 to 60,000 emergency room visits each year, many of those cases in children. The researchers predicted climate change could push those numbers up by 14% by 2090, with grass pollen becoming a bigger problem, particularly in the Northeast, Midwest and Southern Great Plains regions.

Many more people could eventually be living in allergy misery. Each of us has an individual pollen threshold, above which the immune system is triggered and allergy symptoms appear, explains Kenneth Mendez, CEO and President of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. A more intense pollen season will make someone with a lower threshold feel worse, and could tip people with higher thresholds into the ranks of allergy sufferers.

People with seasonal allergies should stay on top of their symptoms by starting their meds at the first signs of spring — even if those occur in February. Antihistamines need to be taken regularly for about two weeks before pollen season starts to be effective, Mendez says. If over-the-counter medicines seem to have lost their punch, see a specialist, who might recommend allergy shots.

Allergy sufferers should also lean into triedand-true methods of lessening pollen exposure, like keeping windows shut and showering before bed, and getting a good home air purifier.

But it can’t just be on individuals to cope. Workplaces could ensure that indoor air quality, an issue that got attention during the peak pandemic years, continues to be a priority. And local and federal governments should be doing more to blunt the impact of longer allergy seasons.

A good starting place would be to do a better job of tracking pollen counts. Large swaths of the country, including some major cities and several states, don’t even have a pollen station, which are run and funded by volunteers in coordination with the National Allergy Bureau. Anderegg notes

that only one exists for his entire home state of Utah. That lack of coverage makes it harder for people like him to effectively study long-term allergen patterns, as well as warn the public about signs of changes that could make them sicker. Cities or states could throw a few dollars at expanding this network.

City planners should also be taking pollen into account as they design vegetation to mitigate the effects of climate change. Increasing tree cover is a vital way to cool down urban heat islands. But tree pollen also is the primary driver of spring allergy woes (grass is typically the main culprit in the summer, and ragweed and mold in the fall), which means urban planners need to make smart planting choices. For decades, cities tended to plant male rather than female trees, as they don’t bear fruit that litters the ground. But male trees make much more pollen, meaning allergy sufferers pay a price for that botanical bias.

“There is a huge potential for trees to cool down cities and help us adapt to heat waves,” Anderegg says. “We just want to plant the right species in the right places for the right reasons.”

A bad allergy season not only results in human suffering, but in high costs for treatments, doctors’ visits and hospitalizations. People miss work due to hay fever and asthma. More often, they head into the office with symptoms and are less productive because of it. Without action, the toll on both our sinuses and the economy will only get worse.

TOGETHER FOR A BETTER PLANET WITH IKEA®

IKEA Celebrated Earth Month with “Together for a Better Planet” Sustainability event at Shaheed Park

IKEA Kuwait continues to set the standard in sustainability, steadfastly upholding its core pillars to effect positive change. With a commitment in Kuwait spanning four decades, IKEA Kuwait consistently pioneers innovative approaches to environmental responsibility, setting a precedent for local industry and beyond. From eco-friendly product design to working towards having the region’s first LEED-certified energy-efficient store in Kuwait and sustainability pledges in Kuwait, IKEA’s most recent “Together for a Better Planet” event held at Shaheed Park, Phase 2, effectively demonstrated how sustainability permeates its entire ethos.

The larger-than-life sustainability event stood as a celebration of our beautiful planet and a heartfelt call to action for everyone to participate. Highlighting how today’s pace of life has affected our world, the 4-day event showcased the human impact on the environment in an inspiring way, by pledging to make a change at the dedicated Pledge Wall. Also in collaboration with the EPA, Kuwait Environment Public Authority, IKEA has also announced a series of workshops and an ongoing collaboration towards safeguaring Kuwait’s environment.

The event itself marked a poignant moment for Marino Maganto, CEO of IKEA Kuwait, Jordan, and Morocco, as not only did April “mark Earth Month with our first Sustainability event but also celebrated our 40 years in Kuwait; a

journey marked by memorable moments, lots of inspiration, and love from all the people of Kuwait, and immense dedication from all our coworkers. Throughout these years, sustainability remained a core part of our commitment towards Kuwait,” he added.

It was an introspective walk visiting each exhibit to say the least. Event invitees as well as public passers-by were intrigued and shocked by the facts each display presented in a lush, beautifully maintained Shaheed Park that is commonly frequented by people living in Kuwait looking for uninterrupted green spaces.

Commenting on the theme of the event, Maganto said, “While IKEA’s strong sustainability strategy has been in effect for years, we revisit it every single year to reassess how we can do

better for our world. We are people and planet positive and we do this by ensuring that our three key sustainability pillars are applied to every aspect of our organization. We not only want to do good for our physical environment, but we also want to influence as many people as possible and we have a goal to help 1 billion people reach a more healthy and sustainable life. We do this by examining the tough questions and facts that involve mass consumption and production, all of which is tackled in art installations on display.”

Maganto feels strongly about living a healthier life, as changing our eating habits. For instance, one of the fastest and easiest changes one can make towards is reducing meat consumption to further reduce CO2 emissions caused by this dramatic increase in consumption. He said, “By

74
Marino Maganto, CEO of IKEA Kuwait, Jordan, and Morocco

changing our eating habits, we create the space for better air quality by making sure that we have enough trees in the world that absorb our CO2 emissions. This is why we continue to introduce more plant-based food in our IKEA restaurants. By 2030, 80% of our range of restaurant offerings will be plant based.”

A visit to the food pyramid installation exemplified the profound impact of nutrition on longevity, suggesting that a healthy diet could potentially extend life by a decade. Food not only influences our physical well-being but also deeply affects our energy levels and motivation, making it an indispensable component of healthy living. IKEA, in alignment with its vision to promote both individual and planetary health, offers a range of nutritious and sustainable food choices. From plant-based options like plant balls and vegetable hotdogs to responsibly sourced salmon filets and non-dairy soft ice cream, IKEA prioritizes

wholesome fare that nourishes both body and planet. IKEA also aims to transition all food packaging to renewable or recycled materials by 2030, further solidifying its dedication to fostering a healthier, more environmentally conscious world.

As we approached the T-shirt installation, it served as a striking reminder of the significant impact our material consumption has on water usage. The illuminated facts disclosed that crafting a single T-shirt requires a staggering 3,000 liters of water, while a pair of jeans demands 6,000 liters—amounting to 9,000 liters in total, enough to sustain one person for nine years. IKEA’s dedication to combating such excessive water usage is evident through initiatives like the Better Cotton Initiative, in partnership with WWF, ensuring cotton is either recycled or grown sustainably with reduced water and pesticide usage.

Additionally, IKEA prioritizes Lyocell, a wood pulp-derived fiber, in its bed linen, pillows, and

duvets for its strength, silky-smooth texture, and excellent moisture absorption. Products such as the BUSENKEL duvet cover blend cotton with Lyocell, while options like the JUNIMAGNOLIA bed linen highlight pure cotton’s breathability and softness, enhancing comfort with each wash.

Also putting water, front and center, is the large faucet installation, shockingly displaying how 92% of fresh water used in Kuwait’s homes and industries comes from desalinating sea water and how Kuwait consumes and uses a total of 447 liters per day per person. We can bring these numbers down today in Kuwait by committing to water saving taps and showerheads from IKEA, which integrate air to create a good flow with less water. The BROGRUND tap enables you to consume less water as well as less energy. Combined with ABÄCKEN mist nozzle, it helps reduce your water consumption. Today, all of IKEA’s stores in Kuwait utilize water saving taps.

75
[Continued...]
Marino Maganto, Abdullah Ashkanani, Elisa Albndea.

We continued our walk, stopping to read on one board that every day, we lose 41.04 million trees. Pausing at this display on wood usage, Maganto told us more about IKEA’s second, and perhaps biggest, pillar Circular and Climate Positive. Maganto stressed on the importance of ensuring that IKEA Kuwait is positively impactful locally and not just worldwide. It’s no surprise that IKEA is one of the biggest consumers of wood in the world, yet they work tirelessly to find alternative ways to keep our forests intact via dedicated replantation initiatives with the Forest

Stewardship Council (FSC*), and utilizing recycled wood or other sustainable materials like PET plastic. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either recycled or FSC-certified.

From sustainable wood, to plastic usage, we learned more about IKEA’s approach to circularity when it comes to plastic usage and reducing waste at the Whale Sculpture, positioned by the Shaheed park fountains. Every year, 2 million tons of solid waste are generated out of Kuwait alone, eqivalent to the weight of 134,000 blue whales, the largest mammal on the planet! While

we let that fact sink in, Maganto reiterated that IKEA Kuwait is committed to reducing waste, and he said that this “starts with the displays that we have in showrooms. All of our display items go to the As-Is section to give these products a second life, offering customers huge discounts which can go up to 70% at times. We are also deeply committed to recycling, launching a new service, where you can actually call us to pick up ANY furniture you don’t want. Let’s say you visit us to purchase a sofa, we are more than happy to take the old one. We will break it down into the different components and we will actually recycle it!”

IKEA Kuwait has recycled 1,700 tons of cardboard in 2023 which equals to the weight of almost 3,378 camels! They also recycle cardboard, paper, wood, plastic, fabric, sponge, glass and metal from their operations and the used oil from the kitchens. At home, you can start recycling right away by separating your plastics, metals and paper products using IKEA containers, and the best part is that you can bring your recyclables to any of IKEA’s stores in Kuwait and they will happily take these off your hands.

We lastly visited the Plastics installation, a fully enclosed space covered in plastic bottles, and watched a presentation about how around 8 million metric tons of plastic bottles enter the oceans every year. This is like dumping one full garbage truck of plastic into the ocean every minute. By the end of it, we felt suffocated just learning about the alarming level of pollution taking over our oceans. By 2030, IKEA will only use 100% renewable or

76

recycled materials in any of their plastic products offerings, with currently 60% of the materials used being renewable and 10% recycled.

Despite the somber realities presented, Maganto remains hopeful about the future. He believes that Kuwait’s youth will usher in the awareness needed to bring about real change in how we interact with the world around us, and he also looks to his teams to bring about change in the IKEA ecosystem. “Our third pillar at IKEA is Fair and Equal, “ he says. “This is all about how we interact with our societies, and the people around us, our coworkers, our customers and even our suppliers. Sustainabiliity extends to our code of conduct, ensuring that we treat people in a fair way, in order to live better and do better by their environement as well.”

Looking towards the next 40 years in Kuwait, IKEA aims to lead the way by announcing the LEED cerfiticaton for IKEA The Warehouse, the world’s most recognized system for rating green buildings and spaces. IKEA The Warehouse provides a sustainablity success story for others to follow, as it is energy efficient, cost saving and utilizes smart, sustainable materials for insulation/ cooling systems. Today, it is the first LEED compliant store in Kuwait and the region.

Lastly, as we approached the Sustainability Pledge Wall to sign our names (we pledged to plant more trees!) Maganto tells us how we can continue our sustainability pledges at home. He deeply believes that sustainability as a concept doesn’t only belong in a corporate landscape and that “We can all make small changes every day,

like cooking a little bit less food to reduce food waste, switching off all the lights when we walk out of a room, making sure that we only put the AC on a certain temperature so that we don’t waste energy and not leave doors open when the AC is running, to even buying the clothes that we’re actually going to use and not simply impulse-buy. Mindfullness in everything we do will help us live more sustainably in the long run.”

To reinforce IKEA’s pledge towards a more sustainable operation in Kuwait, all of the materials utilized in the installations, including the Pledge Wall, have been allocated for reuse or recycling after the event.

AROMATHERAPY USE AND SAFETY

What to know about essential oils during pregnancy

People often have questions about using essential oils before, during and after pregnancy. These natural oils are distilled from plants or other sources and retain their characteristic fragrance. Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of essential oils, but research on its effectiveness is limited. Some studies have shown that aromatherapy may relieve anxiety and depression.

The Food and Drug Administration doesn’t regulate essential oils used for aromatherapy, but they have been shown to be safe when used as directed. Essential oils are becoming more common to use during pregnancy, labor and the postpartum period to treat anxiety, aches and lack of focus.

With various oils to choose from, these types may help pregnant people:

Peppermint oil

Peppermint oil can be helpful for headaches, nausea, nasal congestion and muscle aches during pregnancy. Peppermint oil inhalation has even been found to be beneficial for postpartum people who have difficulty emptying their bladder. Lavender and rose oils

Studies have found that lavender and rose essential oils can decrease anxiety in labor. A person’s perception of pain also can

decrease when they’re relaxed. The sense of smell is strongly linked with memory. If you’ve experienced relaxation with the scent of lavender or rose in the past, inhaling it during labor likely will help you recall those relaxing experiences. Some studies show that lavender oil aromatherapy may improve sleep for people who are in the hospital. The oil can be mixed with water and sprayed on a pillow to promote restful sleep. This technique might be beneficial for postpartum people as well.

Want to try essential oil?

If you’re pregnant and would like to try essential oils, here are some points to consider:

• More is not necessarily better. I recommend that pregnant people start with one drop of their chosen essential oil and increase it to three to five drops based on their tolerance. Pregnancy can increase sensitivity to smell, and some people find aromatherapy overwhelming. It

may even trigger symptoms such as nausea. Try placing the oil on a tissue or cotton ball for inhalation, which can easily be removed if you don’t tolerate the fragrance.

• Avoid placing essential oils on your skin. Essential oils often require a carrier oil, such as coconut or almond oil, to dilute them. Essential oils applied directly to the skin can cause side effects, such as allergic reactions, irritation or sun sensitivity. A qualified aromatherapist can give more details for preparing specific oils. •Don’t ingest essential oils during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. There isn’t enough research to support that this is safe for your baby. Since the research on essential oils for aromatherapy is limited, talk with your healthcare team if you’re considering aromatherapy while pregnant or breastfeeding.

IS YOUR CHILD OR TEEN SUPER ANXIOUS?

Here’s some advice from a Temple University psychology expert

Anxiety among children and teens is on the rise, and that concerns clinical psychologist and Temple University professor Philip Kendall. Kendall directs Temple’s Child & Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Clinic, which treats kids ages 7 to 17. The clinic charges low treatment fees in exchange for enrolling children in research to better understand what works best.

Kendall said neither he nor his two children (now adults) were overly anxious growing up, but everyone experiences some anxiety as a normal, self-protective reaction to an unfamiliar situation. He gravitated toward helping children and teens manage their anxiety, in part because anxiety disorders are often treatable, which he finds professionally rewarding.

Kendall spoke about how parents can better recognize unhealthy anxiety in their children and help them “dial it down.”

What is the best way to help children manage anxiety?

You don’t get kids to overcome or manage anxiety by talking about it. The way to get over anxiety is to practice through behavioral experiments, also called exposure tests. If you’re afraid of a dog and you don’t change your behavior, that’s not a big deal. But if you’re afraid of a dog and you won’t go to a friend’s house or you won’t walk home from school because there’s a dog in the neighborhood, then it’s interfering.

The best way to overcome interfering maladaptive anxiety is through exposure. You start by petting a small dog and you work your way up to petting the big dog. And when it’s over the kids kind of strut, ‘Wow, I can do it now.’

How do you tell the difference between everyday worry and an anxiety disorder?

It’s hard for some people to recognize. And the reason it’s hard is that parents in particular will sometimes adjust their own behavior to reduce their kid’s emotional distress. So the kid has social anxiety and they’re afraid to order their own meal in a restaurant, so when the waiter comes over and says to the kid or teen, ‘What will you have?’ and the kid doesn’t say anything, the mom or dad says, ‘Oh, he’ll have blah, blah.’

In the moment, the parents reduce the distress. In the long run, they make it worse for the kid. The key is to recognize the tricks that anxious kids will engage in to avoid doing something. Avoidance doesn’t allow them to learn mastery.

You’ve written 35 books. Can you recommend one on anxiety for parents or teens?

“The Resilience Recipe: A Parent’s Guide to Raising Fearless Kids in the Age of Anxiety.”

Part of the take-home message of the book is

how parents can back up a little bit. Parents will be overly involved with their kids. Now, if you’re a conduct disorder, delinquent kid getting in trouble with the law, more parental monitoring is good. For anxious kids, sometimes less parental monitoring is preferred. We learn from taking little risks.

How has social media affected anxiety among children?

Social media is not good or bad. There are studies that show social media can be good — keeping up with your peers, chatting with friends. On the other hand, access to inappropriate material can be bad. Constantly scrolling and looking at pictures and making social comparisons and not really interacting with anybody except the media itself, there’s some pathology associated with that.

The American Psychological Association and the American Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists both have recommended that there should be some education about social media use. One feature of that is teaching adolescents how to deconstruct photos they see on social media.

What do you recommend for kids who use computer gaming as social avoidance?

A teenager needs autonomy and agency. So I’d have the teenager be active in picking which way they want to try to cut back. I wouldn’t say somebody should impose cold turkey or impose overarching rules. Talk about options and let them pick the one they want to try.

Can you talk about the link between anxiety and substance abuse?

Socially anxious teens will use substances to self-medicate. I’d be cautious about vaping, beer, whatever it is. You don’t want to get excessive. It shouldn’t be a crutch. If you talk to friends, if you can make friends, if you can approach situations and not avoid without the substances, that means you can do it. Teens should increase interactions and challenges without relying on a substance.

A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP MIGHT REQUIRE A VISIT TO THE DOCTOR FIRST

A conversation with Dr. Nourah Alyouha, Specialist of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery

Dr. Nourah Alyouha is exactly the kind of physician we all want to see. She has an aura of calm confidence about her and takes the time to explain things in easyto-understand language and a lot of compassion. She loves being a doctor, “I like being there for people when they’re going through a tough time. I like being involved in my patients’ care, spending time with my patients and getting to know them,” Dr. Nourah explains.

She recently joined Taiba Hospital’s ever-expanding list of expert doctors as a specialist of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery. As a surgeon, she treats many kinds of diseases and cases, but today we’re getting a crash course in sleep apnea since it is becoming more and more prevalent.

Sleep apnea is a condition that happens while you are asleep and have short periods when you’re not actually breathing. That can lead to a drop in your oxygen levels. Sometimes you don’t fully wake up feeling like you’re not breathing. It might just be that it startles you or it takes you from a deeper sleep to a lighter sleep, so the quality of your sleep deteriorates if it often happens throughout the night.

While there are several types of sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea is when the whole airway collapses and stops the air from going in adequately. Your body will end up in a startled state, with muscles tensing up, so you can breathe again. But if it’s a regular issue and your quality of sleep is affected, an ENT surgeon’s intervention might become necessary.

Sleep apnea manifests differently in children and adults. In children, symptoms may include snoring, pauses in breathing, restless sleep, bedwetting, and daytime sleepiness. Additionally, they may exhibit behavioral issues and struggle with attention and learning. Adults with sleep apnea commonly experience loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness, and difficulty concentrating. They may also suffer from irritability, depression, and decreased libido. It’s essential to recognize these symptoms and seek medical evaluation, as untreated sleep apnea can lead to serious health complications in both children and adults.

Some people are more susceptible to sleep apnea than others. These include being overweight or obese, having a thick neck circumference, being male, being older, having a family history of sleep apnea, and having anatomical abnormalities such as a narrow airway, enlarged tonsils, or a recessed jaw. Other risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, sedative use, and nasal congestion. Additionally, certain medical conditions like hypertension, congestive heart failure, diabetes, and asthma increase the risk. Being aware of these risk factors is crucial for early detection and intervention to mitigate the potential health consequences of sleep apnea.

82

According to Dr. Nourah’s, diagnosing and treating sleep apnea in children is simpler than adults. If the ENT specialist sees enlarged tonsils or adenoids, they are removed. Young patients heal quickly, and the problem goes away.

Unfortunately, sleep apnea is becoming more common in adults, because of increased rates of obesity. Patients are tired during the day and don’t have the energy to exercise, which exacerbates the symptoms of apnea, and they get less sleep. It creates a cycle that is difficult to break. “Basically, you have sleep apnea. It can then cause you to be tired, which makes you less likely to do activities to reduce your weight, which makes it more difficult for you to lose weight. Yeah, also induces like a stress response in your body,” Dr. Nourah explains.

In the case of adults, it can be more complicated to diagnose and treat because other sleep disorders might be the underlying cause. Doctors will first try to treat obesity, and other factors first. They might also suggest a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine which is a medical device used to deliver a constant flow of air through a mask worn over the nose or mouth during sleep, preventing the airway from collapsing and ensuring uninterrupted breathing, thereby improving sleep quality and overall health. While they can greatly improve the quality of sleep, they are bulky, noisy and can cause other issues. If a patient can’t tolerate it, surgery becomes an option.

ENT surgeons have several options to open up the airways, from sinus and nasal surgery to tonsil removal and tightening of the palate so it doesn’t collapse. Dr. Nourah explained that the surgeon has to fully investigate to make sure that they choose the appropriate solution for the patient.

If you or a family member is suffering from the forementioned symptoms, it might be time to visit your doctor for some investigating. You can find Dr. Nourah at Taiba Hospital. It’s one of our favorite medical establishments in the country. The caregivers are always skilled, welcoming and friendly. You will be in good hands.

Taiba Hospital is located in Sabah Al Salem, off of route 30 on Road 3. Call them 24 hours at 180 80 88. For updates and information, visit the website taibahospital.com, and follow them on Instagram @taibahospital.

EXPLORING MADE EASY

Google unveils new updates to make trip planning easier for travelers

Google Maps is launching new updates that are intended to make finding travel inspiration and local recommendations in your destination easier. Users will start seeing these lists of suggestions popping up in Google Maps in more than 40 cities across the U.S. and Canada this week. These updates will also be rolled out globally on Android and iOS mobile platforms later this month.

With this trio of updates, users can discover curated lists of local recommendations from other users and esteemed websites, customize their own lists and access key insights, making vacation planning a breeze and ensuring a seamless on-the-go experience. To access the new features, simply search for a city in Google Maps and and swipe up to see curated lists of places from people who know the city inside and out. You’ll also see lists from such reputable sources as Lonely Planet, The New York Times and OpenTable.

And, when away from home, the question of where to eat is always top of mind. Now, whether you’re a traveler or just want to find a trendy spot in town, you can use new restaurant lists created by Google Maps. These lists will spotlight the eateries people are showing interest in or rating highly on Maps at the time. Google has sorted restaurants into three separate lists based on various criteria, creating indices for trending, toprated, and hidden gem locations.

The Trending list is updated weekly to spotlight places that experienced a recent spike in popularity on Maps, making it ideal for discovering the latest hot spots.

The Top list showcases the places that the Maps community has consistently shown love for. Use this list to find a neighborhood’s longstanding favorites.

The Gems list is for places that are considered an area’s best-kept secrets, highlighting great restaurants that still fly under the radar.

Creating Maps lists allows you to organize places you’d like to visit and places you’ve already been that you might wish to revisit. With the new lists format, users will also be able to more easily arrange their selections for easy reference, as they can now choose the order in which places appear. Simply move them up or down in whatever order you prefer to have them displayed. Users can also link in content from their social media streams, such as their own reviews of a certain venue.

Similarly, to give users a good sense of each place at a glance, Google’s AI pulls key insights to display from the Maps community. When you search a spot, you’ll see select photos and reviews that encapsulate what patrons love about it. The AI function can even help you identify the name of a particular dish and display helpful information based on a restaurant’s menu.

New design updates are also set to give Google Maps a fresh look, including a simplified home screen and new pin colors that make places on the map easier to find.

Google has also just announced an update that’s coming to its Search Generative Experience (SGE), which will enable users to create travel itineraries and compile trip ideas using AI.

This means that Google will be taking on other companies that are already applying the generative AI’s capabilities to help travelers plan their trips, such as Mindtrip and Layla.

To come up with its travel recommendations, Google’s AI engine relies upon information from sites across the internet, as well as photos, reviews and other specifics users have submitted about any given place. Conversationally, users can ask the AI something like “plan me a five-day trip to New York City that focuses on entertainment” and receive a sample itinerary that includes local restaurants, attractions and points of interest. Once you’ve constructed your ideal itinerary, you can export it to Gmail, or Google Docs or Maps.

This new capability is currently available only in the U.S. (in English) to those who are signed up for Google’s Search Labs program, which invites users to experiment with early-phase Google Search functions. The company has not stated if or when this function will become more widely available. According to TechCrunch, Google is not only testing out new realms for using generative AI, it’s also gathering data about consumers’ travel purchasing intent, which would support its wider ad business.

HOW TO RAISE A HEALTHY ACTIVE CHILD?

It can be done!

Parents and caregivers influence a child’s home environment and daily routines around mealtimes, sleep, active and screen use. But if the surrounding environment does not support these healthy routines, even the best-intentioned parent, caregiver, or motivated child or adolescent faces an uphill battle.

For example, it’s much easier to raise a healthy, active child when neighborhoods offer plenty of safe places for children to play and walk to school and where families can find nutritious food they can afford near home. Ideally, school cafeteria standards support healthy nutrition, and media and screen use is in healthy balance and monitored by adults. In a more perfect world, later school start times would support better sleep. And children, adolescents, and their families would not experience racism, toxic stress, housing or food insecurity, safety risks or other social determinants of health that harm health and well-being

Most of us don’t live in ideal places like this and need support from schools, health care systems and the wider community to create healthier lives for our kids.

The American Academy of Pediatrics offers tools and resources to help optimize health regardless of a child’s weight. The guidance is based on the best science on strategies that can also help prevent obesity at every stage, from infancy through adolescence. It turns out, it is about much more than nutrition and physical activity, though they are key factors that govern a child’s health and weight.

Here are some practical tips for parents to tackle issues that are within your control:

Learning about good nutrition can be a family affair. Start with the easy-to-use tools at MyPlate. gov, a great way to get kids involved in choosing foods they enjoy that are good for them. The ideas and suggestions on this website take into account a family’s culture and traditions too, giving examples of healthy meals that include familiar foods. Pair this knowledge with a team approach to choosing, planning and making food to give kids a more active role in what they eat.

Make water your drink of choice. The healthiest beverage is plain water. Limit access to sweet drinks including 100% fruit juice, sodas, sports drinks, and fruit drinks as much as possible. Ideally, aim for 1 drink or fewer per week (and not at all for infants and toddlers). Bonus: Drinking plenty of water cleanses your child’s teeth and gums, preventing cavities now while setting the stage for lifelong dental health.

Limit ultra-processed foods. It may not be realistic to avoid them altogether. But try to limit their access when possible and help children and adolescents learn the benefits of eating whole foods like fruits and vegetables. You can also talk

with them about the health risks of too much “junk food,” which generally are loaded in sugar and salt, do not increase feelings of fullness, and prompt overeating.

Adopt a family media plan. Children and adults will benefit from sensible screen time limits that make room for other healthy activities. You can engage your kids in creating a plan for the whole family to follow.

Build movement into your daily life. In an age when we spend far too much time sitting, it can be challenging to get up and move more. But when parents make it a priority to work movement into family routines, kids will benefit. Organized sports aren’t the only option, though they’re an excellent way to build health and fitness. Families can also enjoy walking, biking, swimming, physical chores and active vacations that include hiking,

water sports and more. Indoors, you can try active gaming or online fitness classes to strengthen muscles, build coordination and release tension. Make stress management a family priority. Just like exercise, kids will follow the example that parents set for them. If your work, school and social schedules are jammed with so many commitments that there’s no room for healthy downtime, consider what you can let go. Rest and relaxation rebuild the body’s systems after the challenges of a tough day or week, so reserve time for them (and encourage children to do the same).

Talk with your pediatrician about ways to support an active, healthy lifestyle that helps children thrive.

MOM BUT FIT: EMPOWERING MOTHERS THROUGH FITNESS

Guiding you through your burpees and baby bumps!

Dunja Radanovic is not your average personal trainer. With a heart as warm as her smile and a dedication to empowering women at every stage of motherhood, she’s redefining what it means to be “mom fit.” She is the one you want to be guiding you through your journey to pregnancy and beyond!

92

“Family is at the core of who I am,” Dunja shares, her voice brimming with passion. As a wife and mother of two young children—a three-year-old son and an eleven-month-old daughter—she understands the unique challenges and joys of motherhood intimately. But it’s her role as a fitness trainer specializing in prenatal and postnatal wellness that truly sets her apart.

Dunja’s journey into the world of fitness wasn’t a straight line. “I used to love playing volleyball,” she reminisces, “but when I got injured, I had to find new ways to stay active.” That journey led her to explore various fitness avenues, from CrossFit to bodybuilding. But it was during her own pregnancy that she realized the lack of reliable information available for expectant mothers. Determined to fill that gap, she pursued certifications in pregnancy and postpartum fitness, blending her diverse background in hospitality management and medical studies into a career focused on empowering women.

The inspiration behind Mom But Fit, Dunja’s brainchild, stems from a desire to flip the script on motherhood and fitness. “I want mothers to be celebrated for their strength and resilience,” she asserts. “Fitness isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling empowered in your own skin.” And we at bazaar love that philosophy!

Her main audience? Mothers and moms-to-be seeking to prioritize their health and wellness during one of life’s most transformative periods. And the response in Kuwait? Overwhelmingly positive. Dunja beams with pride as she recounts the stories of women from diverse backgrounds coming together to support each other on their fitness journeys.

So, how does she work her magic? Through personalized training programs tailored to each client’s needs and goals. “Every woman’s journey is unique,” Dunja explains. “I’m here to provide support, education, and motivation every step of the way.”

But running a fitness business isn’t all smooth sailing. Dunja faces the challenges head-on, balancing her time between family, work, and personal needs. “It can be overwhelming,” she admits, “but I’m learning to give myself grace and time.”

As for the future, Dunja’s sights are set on expanding her reach through the READY fitness app, ensuring that more people have access to her expertise. But amidst the hustle and bustle, she never forgets to prioritize self-care. “Take care of your body and mind,” she advises. “It’s the only house you need to live in.”

With Dunja Radanovic leading the charge, mothers everywhere are redefining what it means to be “mom fit”—one squat, one lunge, and one empowered woman at a time. So If you need a little guidance, a little inspiration or motivation, follow her on Instagram @mombutfit.

PACKING FOR THE FUTURE

A new paradigm for sustainable packaging

Sustainable packaging is not a niche concern for environmental enthusiasts. Investors, governments, businesses, and consumers are all demonstrating increasing interest in packaging circularity—that is, ensuring packaging materials can reenter the value chain after use. This approach can reduce pollution in the ocean and other ecosystems, slim down landfills, and boost local economies, while also often reducing costs for the companies that adopt it.

Today, most fast-moving consumer goods companies are working to incorporate circularity into their packaging strategies. But with dramatic variations in legislation and infrastructure across markets, finding the right strategy—even for a single product—can be a Herculean task. The only way forward is through an industry-wide approach that acknowledges and acts on regional differences.

Global-local tension

To develop truly circular packaging for a given market, companies must understand local realities. The recycling rates for a given material depend on several factors, such as the availability and processing capability of recycling facilities for that material, its quality and selling price, household behavior, and whether localities separate recyclable material from other trash. This means that decisions regarding which materials and formats to use in each market need to be made locally—often at a council or state level rather than country-wide.

In Brazil, for example, glass recycling facilities are concentrated in southern and southeastern parts of the country. In less densely populated regions such as northern Brazil, it can be prohibitively expensive to move heavy, fragile glass to distant facilities. Investing in local recycling infrastructure offers a more sustainable approach, though that involves considerable time and up-front costs.

Plastic recycling rates can also vary significantly across a region. In Germany, over 90% of PET bottles are recycled, whereas in Greece, another EU country, that number is just below 30%. The PET bottles recycling rate is over 40% in Australia and New Zealand, but less than 1% in the nearby Pacific islands. In practice, this means that a single product—say, the bottle that holds an internationally distributed beverage— will most likely be circulated in Germany but is almost certain to end up as a polluter in Fiji.

Packaging IQ will provide a view on the level of circularity of a given format in a given market. Image courtesy of Delterra.

Data as a key enabler

No one company can solve the fragmented nature of market conditions. A challenge on this scale requires pooled resources, insights, and

investment, as well as collaboration with NGOs, data providers, governments, and civil society. To get there, the industry needs to adopt a shared framework, including a unified set of decisionmaking tools.

In practice, those tools could look something like Packaging IQ, a platform envisioned by Delterra and Systemiq to ease packaging decisions based on granular system data at the SKU and market level, a view of the regulatory landscape, and a dashboard for analysis across markets and brands.

A minimum viable product version of this platform is set to be released by the end of 2024, grounded in the principles of Plastic IQ, which has already shown promising results in the industry. A major Indonesian retailer trained its sustainability team using Plastic IQ LITE, an educational version of the software that outlines circular solutions for plastic packaging. The retailer also plans to train its suppliers using the platform, deepening sustainability literacy across its supply chain.

In Brazil, a multinational animal health care

company used Plastic IQ PRO to quantify the environmental impact of its packaging strategy within the country to help reduce its plastic footprint. Also in Brazil, the sustainability team at a leading events company took proactive steps by training their staff and suppliers on sustainability tools. They plan to implement a new requirement for all future events: Suppliers must have an aggressive packaging waste reduction strategy in place to be considered for selection.

In addition to adopting common tools, the consumer goods industry could foster collaboration by establishing global forums, engaging sector-wide stakeholders, and sharing data. Though these efforts should be global, the actions that result from them must be local. The circular economy of the future will be underpinned by a global network of small-scale, tailored solutions—and together, we can help build it.

THE TOP TRENDS INSPIRING TRAVEL IN 2024

This is shaping up to be another monumental year for travel, and already some significant trends are emerging.

American Express Travel recently released its 2024 Global Travel Trends Report, revealing that 84% of respondents are planning to spend more or the same amount of money on travel in 2024 compared to last year.

What’s more, 77% care more about having the right travel experience than about the cost of the trip.

As far as what’s driving the continued surge in travel demand, American Express Travel identified four notable trends.

Traveling for sporting events

Travelers are excited to see their favorite sports in person this year. According to American Express Travel, 67% of millennial and Gen-Z respondents are interested in traveling for sporting events in 2024, compared to 58% of all respondents.

Three-quarters of respondents who plan to travel to a sporting event in 2024 will spend at least three hours getting there and most (58%) will be traveling for soccer, basketball or Formula 1 racing.

The top cities for sports travel this summer are New York (30%), Miami (27%), London (26%), Las Vegas (25%) and Paris (25%).

Making travel a priority

More than seven out of 10 respondents (72%) said they would rather save money for a major trip than spend it on going out with friends, and 65% are more interested in taking a major trip in 2024 compared to previous years.

Perhaps surprisingly, younger travelers are more interested in working with a travel adviser to plan and book their trip, with 58% of millennial and Gen-Z respondents seeking a trusted travel professional compared to 52% of all respondents.

Traveling solo

More than two-thirds of travelers (69%) are planning on taking a solo trip in 2024, including 76% of millennials and Gen-Zers.

American Express Travel also found that 66% of respondents planning on traveling solo are planning a trip centered around self-love and treating themselves and 60% of respondents planning on traveling solo this year intend to take two or more solo trips.

Traveling on a whim

Nearly eight out of 10 travelers (78%) indicated that spontaneous trips appeal to them and a sizable 68% of respondents agree that they like to leave unplanned time in their trip to experience local culture and activities.

The study found that millennials and Gen-Z travelers are more likely to book a last-minute trip, with 77% having done so before compared to 65% of Gen-X and 52% of baby boomers.

“People are traveling to make memories in 2024. While everyone’s motivation for booking a trip is unique —whether it’s taking a solo getaway to recharge or embarking on an expedition cruise or safari — the trips that are trending are sure to be transformative, and our American Express Travel Consultants are here to build dream itineraries and help every step of the way,” said American Express Travel President Audrey Hendley.

GEN GLOBAL

“Gen

Global” has entered the chat—and the workforce.

Gen Global is a new generation of workers that wants growth opportunities, diverse experiences, workplace flexibility and independence associated with global companies.

Today, young workers have bold opinions and global aspirations. What’s more, they are sharing these ideas on social media and are therefore impacting workplaces around the world. And because of social media, workers today have tremendous power. There are more than 200M influencers posting content on social media and many of these users promote trends like flexible schedules and workplace wellbeing and use terms like “quiet quitting,” “rage applying,” and “lazy girl jobs.” These ever-changing trends have sparked different demands, expectations, and behaviors among workers. Today, anyone who wants it has access to a megaphone and an opportunity to connect with anyone, anywhere.

Plus, advancements in technology have made it easier for people to work remotely, and the expansion of the gig economy has forever changed how people think about what it means to “go to work.” These trends are enabling what I like to call an “everywhere workforce.” And employers are grappling to stay ahead of the curve.

A study by G-P found that 79% of employees want to work for a global company. Employees under the age of 27 were the most enthusiastic about this. In fact, 85% of workers under the age of 27 overwhelmingly believe companies that hire from multiple countries offer more opportunities to grow their careers. Additionally, FlexJobs found that nearly 75% of employees under 27 say that workplace flexibility is the number one employee benefit they seek.

Here’s what makes Gen Global unique—and what they want from employers.

The demand for global companies

Gen Global wants to work for international organizations. The benefits of working for a global company are wide-ranging. In fact, G-P also found that 95% of employees believe global companies outpace their peers and, generally, they believe global companies are better at generating and supporting international clients, attracting top talent, and adopting the latest technology—all of which are crucial factors impacting workers’ growth trajectory.

Furthermore, Gen Global believes global companies provide access to better pay and benefits (49%), a culturally diverse workplace (48%), and greater flexibility (40%). These additional factors are what many young employees prioritize as they evaluate job opportunities.

Personal perks are also on Gen Global’s

minds. Nearly 2 in 5 (39%) of survey respondents listed the opportunity to acquire new personal skills as a top reason to work for an organization with a global presence. These workers are actively seeking employers who invest in training and development programs in the form of mentorship, workshops, skill enhancement and opportunities to work with colleagues in different countries.

How employers can attract global talent

While employees are interested in pursuing opportunities with global companies, the feeling is mutual among employers as well. Approximately 66% of leaders say having employees in multiple countries is part of their business strategy and 28% say it is pivotal to their company’s future. Thanks in large part to technology, employees can be productive no matter where in the world they’re located.

Businesses looking beyond borders to access the best talent need to prepare for Gen Global and the everywhere workforce. The first thing leaders can do to accomplish this is to develop a deep understanding of the talent pool. Understanding employees’ skills, strengths and aspirations allows for better workforce management, talent development, and strategic planning.

The second thing leaders should do to attract Gen Global is to partner with expertise.  Executives don’t need to be experts in every market they hire, but they do need to rely on technology, systems and experts to advise on the local laws, regulations and processes.

Lastly, I believe leaders should invest in upgrading their technology. The latest SaaSbased and AI-powered products can help manage global teams in one dashboard with unique insights, analytics and the latest tools to manage the full employee lifecycle. The right technology and experts can guide a company in its  global growth journey to  attract the best talent, withstand challenges and beat the competition. This requires leaders to commit to improving the global work experience and find ways to lower barriers to entry for the Gen Global employees who want to work for global companies.

Ultimately, we are fortunate to be living in a time when people’s opportunities to contribute aren’t limited by their geographical borders, and companies and employees alike can benefit from what technology has made possible. Today, Gen Global can succeed and shape their careers in new ways—and we will all benefit.

& OTHER STORIES UNVEILS SUSAN FANG CO-LAB - ‘DREAMS UNLEASHED’ Statement

Pieces melding fantasy with reality

Last month, & Other Stories launched a remarkable co-lab collection with Susan Fang, the celebrated fashion designer known for her nature-inspired, fantastical creations and innovative design techniques. The co-lab is characterized by distinctive Susan Fang signatures: laser-cut flower petals, unique prints, crochet pieces, and delicate broderie anglaise. The collection also introduces new dimensions to Susan Fang’s design, with finishing touches like beaded “water drops” adding an extra layer of surreal sophistication.

Since the launch of her label in 2017, Susan Fang’s contributions to the fashion landscape have garnered well-deserved acclaim. She has been included in the influential BoF 500 class of 2023, recognized in Forbes 30 Under 30 for both 2019 and 2020, her unique design sensibility earned her a coveted spot on the shortlist for the prestigious LVMH Prize.

Having spent her childhood across China, Canada, the United States, and the UK, Susan Fang’s diverse experiences have shaped her perspective

on fashion as a language transcending cultural boundaries. Her brand is committed to breaking new ground in textile innovation and promoting innovative practices in design and production.

We got to ask her some of our most pressing questions to learn more about her process, inspiration and this collaboration collection.

What inspired this collaboration, and what was it like working with &Other Stories?

Susan Fang: The whole concept of this collection

was based on creating dream-like statement pieces that can also be worn in your daily wardrobe. This collection ties together my love of nature, dreams, and surrealism through fashion. One of the key pieces is the 3D-printed flower necklace. I had a really vivid dream about a transparent flower blossoming. I don’t know if transparent flowers exist in the real world, so I felt I had to create one, it became my showpiece. We crafted a less heavy version for this collection, which I love; it’s a creation inspired by fantasy, rendered in reality.

108

After traveling to Stockholm to meet the design team, I just knew and had a feeling it would be a great partnership - even my close University friend Soyeon was miraculously a member of the co-lab design team – I couldn’t believe it, it was like it was a special sign! I have been impressed by how we both share many of the same beliefs – a passion for bold design, exact attention to detail, having fun with fashion, but never compromising on quality. It’s been a harmonious and smooth partnership, I enjoyed working with Frida Billegren on this collection – we share a passion for flowers and nature, so it was fulfilling to visualize the designs together. What also really stood out was the remarkable finishing we could achieve, and incorporation many of my signatures into the collection, allowing me to realize some design ideas I’ve wanted to do finally but couldn’t before - like the beaded “water drops” on the broderie anglaise and the laser-cut flower petal skirt and ‘treasure’ dress.

How would you describe this collection in three words?

Susan Fang: Nature-inspired, fantastical, and with a three-dimensional quality that I love.

How do you envision this collection fitting into the rest of the body of your work, and how do you see it influencing future trends?

Susan Fang: We used essences of our main collection design and transferred into the & Other Stories collection. For example, the treasure dress was inspired and adapted from the dress Black Pink Jisoo wore from us at our premiere debut Flower MV, and the Transparent flower necklace was also from our showpiece that New Jeans wore for V magazine cover, but we made a lighter flower version. We adapted our signature bubble crystal sandals into large diamanté sandals, our crochet bead dresses into knitwear pieces, our broiderie anglais pieces we actually added more details in for & Other Stories by

incorporating hints of transparent beads on top. We have adapted the signature designs into pieces that could be fitted for all types of age ranges and added elastic for comfort for different body shapes too.

How do you balance staying true to your signature style while also evolving and pushing boundaries with each new collection?

Susan Fang: Perhaps because every collection is very genuine, and we always feel it will feel harmonic to what we truly feel in that meaningful moment. Every season we will create new concepts, textile innovation and new handcraft techniques, but they are always inspired by the core of nature – and we always need the designs to make our hearts flutter.

The Susan Fang & Other Stories co-lab collection is available in selected stores worldwide and online on Stories.com.

GEN-Z AND MILLENNIALS LOVE READING BOOKS

But being a ‘reader’ means something more

Identifying with an activity is different from actually doing it. For example, 49% of Americans play video games, but only 10% identify as gamers. According to a recent survey we conducted, there’s also a small gap between reading activity and identity for younger readers: Some 61% of Generation Z and millennials have read a print book, e-book or audiobook in the past 12 months, but only 57% identify as readers.

And yet there was a puzzling aspect of our results: The 43% of Gen Z and millennials who didn’t identify as readers actually said they read more print books per month than Gen Z and millennials overall.

In other words, young people who don’t identify as readers are reading books at a higher rate than their generational cohorts as a whole. Why?

Our best guess is that “reader” is an identity, not a behavior. And that identity is buttressed by involvement in book clubs, engagement with social media communities such as Booktok and Bookstagram, and access to libraries and bookstores.

Building bookish communities

Identities of reader, writer and fan seem to reinforce each other.

Millennials and members of Gen Z who identify as readers are also more likely to be writers and participate in fandom.

Community is key to all of these identities. For example, two of the top reasons millennials and members of Gen Z identify as fans are the fact that they’re “part of a fan community” and are able to “meet others like me.”

Every August, the Edinburgh Book International Book Festival in Scotland—the largest book festival in the world—puts on an entire month of events around books, authors and readers.

During the 2023 event, which we attended, you could see attendees clamoring to see writers like Alice Oseman, author of the bestselling Heartstopper graphic novels.

We heard fans waiting in that line talking about how Oseman’s series featured the first queer characters they’d encountered in a book. Readers came to the festival with friends and family, and made new friends and connections at the event. The passion was palpable.

What ‘counts’ as reading

But does a graphic novel like Heartstopper even count as “real” reading?

If the National Endowment for the Arts definitions from the early 2000s are to be believed, then no—unless it’s reading literature for leisure, it must not be “real” reading.

And some millennials and members of Gen Z may believe that the reading they are doing isn’t real reading. But a narrow definition of what

counts as reading ignores the love Gen Zers and millennials have for content such as graphic novels, manga and comics.

In our study, 59% said they would prefer a graphic version of a story over text-only. And let’s not forget audiobooks, which 34% of Gen Zers and millennials prefer over text-only. Millennials and members of Gen Z are also reading nonfiction or reading for school and work, rather than pleasure.

In a separate study from 2020, we found that 83% of American readers read books for reasons other than entertainment, such as school, work or self-improvement.

What makes a reader?

More Gen Z and millennial women identify as readers, so there could be gender differences at play: Perhaps young men, no matter how much they read, are hesitant to closely identify with an activity they see as the purview of women.

Socioeconomic status may also factor into whether someone feels they can claim a readerly identity. Gen Zers and millennials who didn’t

identify as readers were less likely to have a job in the past 12 months and earned less money.

So it turns out that identifying as a reader is often about community, wealth and gender—and what counts as reading—than it is about how much someone actually reads.

Perhaps there can be an effort to broaden the definition of “reading”—yes, audiobooks and comics count—and to build bookish communities beyond places such as Bookstagram and BookTok. And being a reader can be more than loving classic literature, though certain social media trends, such as “Reading Like Rory”—a BookTok phenomenon centered on the literary classics read by Rory Gilmore of Gilmore Girls— amounted to just that.

If young people were to see being a reader as simply enjoying and engaging with stories, how many of them would start to call themselves readers after all?

TOOLS FOR FABULOUS NAILS AND HAIR ALL SUMMER

Introducing you to the world of JLD Hairbrushes and Accessories

It’s summer! And we all know what that means; protecting our hair and nails. With more frequent visits to the beach, travel and the shift in weather, we usually end up washing it more often. If you use heat to dry or style your hair that can quickly cause damage, split ends and brittle hair. Even if you’re a no-heat girlie, the extra washing and manipulation can still agitate it. Our nails are exactly the same, we usually end up having to add in extra salon visits for manicures. The good news is that if you have the right tools, you can look fabulous at home or while you’re traveling with a little self-care. You absolutely need the JLD range of hairbrushes and accessories.

112

New Era Wooden Hair Brushes

Wooden hair brushes have gained popularity for their numerous benefits. One of the key advantages of using wooden hair brushes is that they are gentle on the scalp and hair, reducing breakage and damage. The wooden bristles help distribute natural oils evenly throughout the hair, leaving it looking shinier and healthier. Additionally, wooden hair brushes are environmentally friendly and sustainable, making them a great choice for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint. With their ergonomic design and aesthetic appeal, wooden hair brushes are not just a functional tool but also a stylish accessory for your hair care routine

Embrace the natural beauty and effectiveness of wooden hair brushes from JLD Paris for healthier, happier hair. Incorporating a wooden hair brush into your daily routine can be a delightful way to show some love to your hair.

When it comes to styling your hair, choosing between the type of brush is equally important as the material, choosing between a paddle or a round blow dry brush can make a significant difference in the end result.

How to choose the best Hair Brush type or shape?

A paddle brush is great for detangling and smoothing out long, straight hair. Its wide, flat shape covers more surface area, making it ideal for quickly brushing through and straightening your locks. On the other hand, a round blow dry brush is perfect for adding volume and creating bouncy curls or waves. Its cylindrical shape allows for easy maneuvering and styling while blow-drying your hair.

Ultimately, the choice between a paddle brush and a round blow dry brush depends on your hair type and the look you’re trying to achieve. Experiment with both to see which one works best for your hair styling needs. Next time you are out for shopping look out for the very exciting range of hair brushes in appealing colors from JLD Paris.

Manicures and more…

We love getting manicures at the salon, but sometimes we need to give our nails some TLC or we’re away and need an emergency solution. RESTORING THE PLANET

Why Global South climate entrepreneurship is most needed

The Global North is responsible for 92% of total carbon emissions since the Industrial Revolution. By almost any accounting, the United States and Europe, a big part of the Global North (along with Australia) bear overwhelming responsibility for the climate crisis.

There is some reason for optimism. For 30 years, cumulative C02 emissions in the United States and Europe have plateaued. According to an original analysis by Renewables.org, the Global North has continued strong growth and development in that period without a corresponding increase in carbon emissions. By contrast, nations in the Global South, which includes typically less developed countries, have nearly quadrupled their annual emissions. It recently surpassed the less populous Global North in total carbon emitted each year—the Global South now releases 63% of annual carbon emissions. Without intervention, innovation, and entrepreneurship, this trend may continue until the Global South is as polluting on a per capita basis as the Global North, which would be a catastrophic outcome.

Is restorative justice needed?

Some Global South leaders, like India’s Narendra Modi, highlight the irony of Global North nations asking them to practice restraint, when they

benefited from decades of unmitigated emissions. “Over the past century, a small section of humanity has indiscriminately exploited nature. However, entire humanity is paying the price for this, especially people living in the Global South,” he said.

Others, like Kenyan president William Ruto, argue that the Global North is obliged to extend a hand to the Global South to help finance and deploy technologies that would allow them to achieve a similar quality of life without the same carbon cost. “Making global finance responsive to Africa’s climate needs is one of the ways to ensure that Africa succeeds, bringing benefits to the whole world,” he wrote in a recent New York Times editorial.

The truth is, even if there were no restorative justice argument to be made, developed nations would still be obliged to provide support. This is because it is economically expedient to solve climate issues in the Global South, where building low carbon infrastructure is both cheaper and more effective due to the dirtier power grids often located there.

The returns are worth it

While investing in climate resilience and clean energy in the Global South is not always as lucrative, it can make many multiples of the return in terms of carbon avoidance per dollar as they would in the Global North. In addition, investment in Global South renewables creates auxiliary benefits like cleaner air and economic resilience.

From this perspective, building Global South renewables ought not be thought of as charity, but rather as the rational and highest return investment. If a mechanism were in place to draw capital where it had the greatest impact for the least amount of money, it would inevitably flow towards the Global South.

As scientists, financiers, and entrepreneurs develop and deploy clean technology, they should do so with the knowledge that their efforts will be magnified when deployed in the Global South.

BIG BROTHER IS LEARNING FROM YOU

No, you can’t opt out of Meta AI, despite what Meta AI tells you

Some of the most brilliant minds in tech believe it’s only a matter of time before artificial intelligence reaches a new kind of limitless self-awareness, but AI may need to become more aware of its current limitations first.

In recent days, a chorus of Facebook and Instagram users have noticed a new AI-powered feature is being prominently integrated into the main search window of Meta-owned apps. “Meta AI,” which runs on the company’s supercharged Llama 3 large language model (LLM), is essentially a digital assistant that lets you enter your search queries and interact with a natural language interface.

Need recipes for a dinner party? Outfit suggestions? Information about beta blockers? Simply tap the little magnifying glass on Instagram or Facebook and you will be prompted to “ask Meta AI anything.” Meta announced last week that the feature would be rolling out across its core family of apps: Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.

Of course, UX changes of this magnitude are not always universally embraced on social media platforms, so the first question many users are likely to ask when they see this new feature is, How the heck do I disable it? A quick search of online forums, including Reddit and X (formerly Twitter), reveals that users are indeed asking that very question, with many expressing frustration that an AI-powered chatbot has been thrust directly into the nucleus of yet another popular app.

Alas, it looks like it’s here to stay. Reached for comment by Fast Company, a Meta spokesperson confirmed that there is no way to opt out of the feature, although the company emphasizes that regular search results continue to appear along with the AI-generated ones.

“Meta AI aims to be a helpful assistant and is in the search bar to assist with your questions,” the company said in an emailed statement. “You can’t disable it from this experience, but you can search how you normally would engage with a variety of results.”

That’s all well and good, but someone apparently forgot to tell Meta AI. As some Reddit users have pointed out, the chatbot will sometimes claim it can be disabled or deleted when prompted a certain way, and it will sometimes even lay out a set of inaccurate instructions to achieve this.

Fast Company confirmed that the AI sometimes gets confused about how integrated it truly is. When we instructed it to “disable Meta AI and return to the regular search on Instagram,” it first said that wasn’t possible, but when we followed up a second time and said “turn it off,”

it responded with steps that it said would return us to the “classic Instagram,” although the steps it suggested did not appear to exist in our version of the app.

Asked about the erroneous instructions, Meta referred Fast Company to the Meta AI help page, which explains that the chatbot’s responses “may not be accurate or appropriate, and should not be used to make important decisions.” A similar disclaimer is shown to users the first time they engage with the AI, Meta says.

The question of how useful this chatbot will ultimately be, or the extent to which users of legacy apps will tolerate being shoehorned into new AI-powered features in service of Big Tech’s ever-growing AI arms race, remains to be seen. As Google recently learned with the regrettable

rollout of its Gemini image generator, the headlines generated by these tools aren’t always positive.

But Google has so far kept its generative AI tools separate from its signature search products, aka the products that make Google most of its money. What happens when AI tools are integrated into familiar products to such an extent that they disrupt the user experience before consumers are ready to accept them? What if consumers are never ready to accept them? That LLMs can produce inaccurate answers isn’t exactly a revelation at this point. That they may never produce impressive profits might be.

In DOWN WITH THE SYSTEM, Serj presents readers with a memoir that is far more than just a rock ‘n’ roll fable. It’s an immigrant’s tale, it’s an activist’s awakening, and it’s a spiritual journey from darkness toward light. And all of this comes down to the fact that Serj himself has had the chance to live an extraordinary life--thanks to a combination of luck, circumstance, struggle, talent, and spiritual awakening. Serj decides to turn away from a promising future in business and law to make music instead--a decision that leads him to touring five continents as the lead singer of a hugely popular rock band, hitting number #1 on the Billboard album charts the morning of 9/11, and then having the hit single from the same album banned from radio two days later.

ASK

Too often, we don’t find out what’s truly on others’ hearts and minds because we don’t know how to ask the right questions in the right ways. Co-founder of Transcend and former international business consultant and Teach for America executive Jeff Wetzler wants to show you how to fix that. In Ask, he brings you a powerful method called The Ask Approach™, based on a simple premise: that tapping into what other people truly think, know, and feel is a game-changing superpower.

THE BEST LIFE BOOK CLUB

Karissa Newcomb is ready for a new start in a new neighborhood, as far away as she can get from Seattle, where her husband cheated on her with the neighbor who was supposed to be her best friend. She and her nine-year-old daughter are moving on to the city of Gig Harbor on the bay in Puget Sound. She even has a new job as an assistant at a small publishing company right in Gig Harbor. Her new boss seems like a bit of a curmudgeon, but a job is a job, she loves to read, and the idea of possibly meeting writers sounds fabulous.

TIRED LADIES TAKE A STAND

During one unforgettable year in their twenties, best friends Emma, Fern, Carolina, and Andi make a pact to embrace whatever life throws at them, inspiring Fern to write a memoir detailing their escapades and the magical power of saying Yes. But fast forward twenty years and they have reached their bandwidth of responsibilities. Fern is a full-time writer struggling to pay the bills. Carolina is a fitnessobsessed workaholic. Andi is a disillusioned human rights lawyer. And Emma is a stressedout divorcée in the thick of planning her daughter’s wedding. To reconnect to the fun, fulfilled women they were before, they must learn how to stop saying Yes to everything asked of them. And so begins the “Year of No.”

I WILL RUIN YOU

How would you react in a life-or-death situation?

It’s a question everyone asks themselves, but few have to face in real life. English teacher Richard Boyle certainly never thought he would find himself talking down a former student intent on harming others, but when Mark LeDrew shows up at Richard’s school with a bomb strapped to his chest, Richard immediately jumps into action. Thanks to some quick thinking, he averts a major tragedy and is hailed as a hero, but not all the attention focused on him is positive. Richard’s brief moment in the spotlight puts him in the sights of a deranged blackmailer with a score to settle. He’s desperate to find a way out, but everyone in his life seems to be hiding something, and trusting the wrong person could cost him everything he loves.
