The bazaar team... About the Cover: We totally lucked out this month when our friends at Thouq and Thouq Studio so graciously collaborated with us to present this beautiful limited run print as our February issue cover! Titled Sadu Kuwait, the artful digital print pays homage to traditional Sadu art, presenting symbols from everyday Kuwaiti life, as well as digitally pixelating the traditional pattern. We love how the exclusive, 100-run print arrives as a melange between past, present and future, reflective of the contemporary studio’s approach to its various works in Kuwait. Design Hello February, hello Valentines Day, National Day, and of course Liberation Day! What a bittersweet time to be alive. On the one hand, life seems to be going on, with all that entails, on a local level with lots of excitement and optimism about the internal changes, and on a regional level with all the endless events, concerts, races, football matches and so much more taking place in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain. But you always have Gaza at the back of your mind, and at the front of your mind, every part of you aching for the bloodshed to stop, every part of you wondering why the world seems powerless to make it stop. All we can do is pray, hope, wish, share, donate and educate ourselves. Refusing to give up is our path to resistance. We usually have mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day, but this year we are holding on to our loved ones. We won’t take them for granted, and we urge you to check out the incredible Valentine’s Day offerings from Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya, Waldorf Astoria Kuwait and Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa. If you’re looking for something a little more exotic, then we suggest a night at Roka. Our favorite Japanese robatayaki restaurant is celebrating two decades of culinary excellence in the UK, and its Kuwait branch is joining the global festivities by reintroducing some of its most beloved dishes over the last twenty years, making it the perfect date night destination. We’re still enjoying the wonderful weather in Kuwait, which inspired a day trip test-driving the all-new Porsche Cayenne S. Porsche introduced new features and improvements that made an already magical drive even better. Because we’re learning that our existence is intersectional, we’ve come to the conclusion that sustainable clothing is not a luxury, but a must. We’re loving the COS x Nativa capsule collection which features regenerative wool. While, MUJI, is showing us that there is a new alternative to cotton called Kapok, which can be produced much more sustainably, has all the great features of cotton and can look just as stylish. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and want to cocoon yourself at home for a while, then make sure you are comfortable. From wellness at home with clean lifestyle brand Jana Aromas, getting Ramadan ready with IKEA and Pottery Barn to discovering homewear textiles from Christy’s. If you’re looking for even more whimsy, look no further. Pottery Barn Kids has collaborated with LoveShackFancy, so your little girl can live her best pastel and floral life.

Welcome to the heartwarming world of 312 café, a unique establishment that is more than just a coffee shop.

Sara AlRoshoud is an Executive Producer and Actor who is passionate about creativity and storytelling. UNLEASHING THE POWER AND ELEGANCE OF THE PORSCHE CAYENNE S

ETAF ALMUTAWA AND HER VOICE

PARADISE REDISCOVERED

Kuwaiti-Palestinian-Lebanese singer and songwriter Etaf is a culmination of her experiences and a deep sense of understanding her current identity. From a practicing lawyer to a musician, Etaf is showing us that we can show up and speak up.

Maldives is a destination that is on every avid traveler’s list, with the lush beaches and plethora of activities, it was no different for us! Sun Siyam Iru Veli is nestled in the heart of the Maldives, where the Indian Ocean’s turquoise waters gently lap against pristine white-sand beaches. The resort is an exclusive sanctuary that promises an unparalleled blend of luxury, activities, and unrivaled service.

We recently visited State of Art, a vibrant, cozy haven for all things creative, and caught up with Abrar Zenkawi, the half Kuwaiti, half Hungarian dynamo behind it all – the art enthusiast and powerhouse of positive vibes.

Getting behind the wheel of a Porsche is an electrifying symphony of power and precision, an immersive encounter with automotive excellence that transcends the mundane. This has only been elevated in the All-New Porsche Cayenne S, which we recently took for a ride around Kuwait.

88 TWO DECADES OF ROKA This year, one of our favorite Japanese robatayaki restaurants, Roka, celebrates two decades of culinary excellence in the UK, tracing its roots back to the iconic Charlotte Street location in London. Roka is synonymous with the art of ‘robatayaki’ cuisine, and its Kuwait branch is joining the global festivities by reintroducing some of its most beloved dishes over the last two decades.

94 JANA AROMAS AND EVOLVING WELLNESS When local lifestyle concept Jana Aromas started its operation back in 2020, the wellness space in Kuwait was also carving for itself a larger part in consumers’ minds. Today, the burgeoning local brand continues to evolve its nature-driven approach, creating bespoke lifestyle additions to the home from the heart of Kuwait. 20

THE MOST CREATIVE ART STUDIO:

STATE OF ART

A chat with Abrar Zenkawi, the creative force behind the studio By bazaar Staff

26

If you don’t know already, us at bazaar are super keen on all things art, and we love getting our hands dirty. That is why when we had the chance to pop over to State of Art, a vibrant, cozy haven for all things creative, we jumped at the chance. Not only did we get to experience a great workshop, but we caught up with Abrar Zenkawi, the half Kuwaiti, half Hungarian dynamo behind it all – the art enthusiast and powerhouse of positive vibes. Abrar is all about the good vibes and living life to the fullest! Life’s too short to not take chances or at least try, she tells us. “I’m passionate about what I do, love selfchallenges, and believe in doing what makes you happy. So, you’ll often find me chilling, doing what I love, and proving to myself that I can do it.” The studio was born out of Abrar’s love for art. Even though she majored in English Linguistics, she followed her heart and found herself more often with a canvas than a textbook. State of Art was born when Abrar struggled to find a spot to paint. She was illustrating at a café with her friend, and now business partner, Ghadeer Al-Awadhi. She threw the idea out there, and fast-forward, here she is, running fabulous workshops out of her bright and airy studio in the heart of Kuwait City. Their goal is to grow the studio, make it a space for creativity, and turn it into an ‘it’ spot where people can just relax and get artsy. State of Art was launched last year but Abrar and Ghadeer were very chill initially, they recently started booking more workshops and the space is thriving so much so that they recently had to expand. And the vibe you ask? “It is all about stress-free creative therapy,” Abrar shares. “We’ve got all ages joining us. Art is for everyone! We’re providing a cozy space for people to let loose and try their hand at art. We get folks who’ve never painted before, and they’re amazed by what they create. Everyone’s welcome!” she continues. Abrar tells us that she is really grateful for all of the support. She has loved setting up the business with her friend and partner, although they struggled with finding the perfect location that had parking. Art has always been her thing, but in the past 5 years, it became her main thing. The studio was always on her wishlist. Dreams do come true, right? Abrar tells us that she never stopped believing in her dream of owning a studio and she lived by the words “Do what you love, and don’t let fear stop you. Whether you share it with the world or keep it to yourself, just go for it. If you fail, well, at least you tried!” She suggests that others do the same. At present, State of the Art studio is only for bookings for private workshops or joining the ones they announce. However, there are plans for certain walk-in days. The most popular workshops so far include textured painting, water coloring, pot painting, ceramic mug building, and teddy bear painting. We tried the textured painting, and with the bright light flooding in, the creative elements in the studio, and Abrar’s guidance, it was one of the most therapeutic days we have had in a long time. We definitely found that our day was more zen, and we are going back for the teddy bear painting! [Continued...]

TALKING GREENE: ALMANAKH NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION Raising Climate Change Awareness in Kuwait by Hamad Al Khudher

Talking Greene is a series of discussions centered on the idea of sustainability in Kuwait, the group leading this movement, and locating tools to assist the general population in making wiser decisions. As a business owner in the same industry, I believe it is my responsibility to shed a light on local organizations and individuals working to change the way we shop for goods and to increase environmental consciousness both domestically and abroad. In this edition of Talking Greene, we got to know more about Mariam AlSaad, the founder of AlManakh Nonprofit Organization. With a degree in Civil and Structural Engineering and an M.Sc. in Sustainable Cities, Mariam has used her vast knowledge to start an important initiative focusing on raising awareness of climate change and global warming in Kuwait since 2021. Climate change is such an important topic worldwide. How did you decide to launch and NGO on this subject? I started AlManakh in July of 2021. It started because I had just finished my master’s degree, and the main focus of my research was looking at how Kuwait can be more sustainable. I realized that there was a huge gap in terms of education, and in terms of the implementation of projects when it comes to sustainability and climate change awareness. So, the nonprofit started purely out of my own passion of me wanting to see the change happen, and not wanting to wait to see it happen. At first, I started by doing small events with other nonprofits and other people interested in the field in Kuwait. Since then, it’s been growing slowly and has become a massive passion project of mine. Do you mostly work with organizations or individuals? We work with both. We work with other local nonprofits, regional, and international nonprofits as well as international organizations. Simultaneously, we work with individuals and philanthropists who are very much interested in our field. Some of those individuals we’ve been working with are local experts who have been doing it for 20 years and some who have been interested in this field for like two years. Our goal is also trying to build up an actual community of people interested in climate action. Most of the work that we’re doing caters around young people and increasing their awareness of the climate at a much younger age. Therefore, as they grow older, they are more knowledgeable and aware of their responsibilities towards doing their part to their local community, hopefully. The demographic of young people that we are focusing on are starting from elementary school to university, where they can grasp the knowledge we are sharing with them and how important climate awareness really is, especially in Kuwait. 30

[Continued...]

What hurdles and struggles have you faced when it came to AlManakh’s goals to raising climate awareness in Kuwait? It’s very challenging in terms of actually getting support from the government, because we’ve been trying to connect with the institutions, we’ve been inviting them to our events, trying to get them to participate. We send out invitations to all the stakeholders every time we do anything and we rarely really ever get any feedback. Generally, they’ve been very quiet. Our role is actually to support the government and support government projects as well as the community. Another challenge is the fact that there is a lack of awareness about climate change, and it’s not really people’s fault. It’s just that we don’t have an education system that supports that kind of science-based thinking, we don’t have information that’s available in Arabic. This is where we also come in and help; we do a lot of the work in providing information in Arabic to people doing our events and the information we are talking about. The majority of our events are in Arabic, as well as the content we provide online, making sure that it’s in both languages, English and Arabic. Hopefully in this way we can touch base people from as many backgrounds as we can. Did you face other challenges regarding local society from the aspect of educating individuals about such a topic? What is most challenging is that some people in society can be quite selfish in regard to not caring about the environment. What does not affect them personally, they don’t care about and do not waste their time with, and that’s the main challenge we face. We have to show them the big picture and how it will affect every single individual around the world, including future generations of their family. When mentioning the drastic increase in temperatures in the last couple of years they would reply by saying yes, we noticed it, but it doesn’t really bother them to even question why this is even happening and how serious of a problem it is. What can the readers expect from AlManakh in the foreseeing future? For 2024, we intend to expand our operations. We have a few internship and education programs that we are going to introduce to people in Kuwait who might be interested in climate work. It’s also for young people who study or have backgrounds in environmental sciences, or fields relevant to it to get some experience for what they’re planning to do in the future. We’re focusing on things that they should know about Kuwait, and we’re focusing on creating positive attitudes about climate change. We are also going to provide sustainability training for private sector companies, to promote sustainable practices and advocate for change. Likewise, we are going to continue to lobby government agencies to implement better climate solutions. Not only that, but we are also in the 32

process of conducting multiple research projects regarding climate change in Kuwait and we hope to release some of our data soon.

EMBRACING DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVITY The heartwarming tale of 312 café By bazaar Staff

In a world that often rushes past, George Khoury, a Lebanese expatriate residing in Kuwait since 1993, with his lifetime friend, Tareq Abdeen, decided to create a haven that not only embraced challenge and change management but also became a beacon of hope for a special community. Welcome to the heartwarming world of 312 café, a unique establishment which is more than just a coffee shop.

34

George Khoury, a dedicated and hardworking individual with a background in IT, made a leap into the retail business in 1993. But his true calling emerged when he decided to embark on a mission to serve the special needs community and provide them with the opportunity to lead normal lives. The café’s name, 312, holds a special significance, as it pays homage to the International Day for Disability, celebrated on the 3rd of December. Starting the project in 2021 during the challenging times of the pandemic, George and his team faced numerous obstacles. Yet, with passion, respect, and dedication, they overcame challenges, changing perceptions about the capabilities and performance of individuals with special needs. The objective of the 312 project is clear: to integrate special needs individuals into the community. One of the greatest challenges was gaining the trust of parents. Understanding the unique needs, desires, and safety concerns of the special needs community required careful consideration. With unwavering dedication, 312 Café successfully changed people’s perceptions, proving that individuals with special needs can contribute significantly to society. Since its launch in June 2021, 312 Café has garnered widespread support from all segments of the community, including children, teenagers, and adults. With three branches and a myriad of events, the café has become a symbol of inclusivity and acceptance. Working with individuals with Down syndrome, autism, mental disabilities, movement disabilities, and visual impairments, 312 Café has created a diverse and vibrant team. Parents, who initially hesitated, now witness a transformation in their children’s lives. The experience is nothing short of amazing, and the newfound exposure has led to a greater understanding of the special needs community in Kuwait. The café’s unique concept has great demand and the team has hosted numerous successful pop-up events in banks, private sectors, schools, universities, gardens, and more. The community’s eagerness to support 312 Café reflects the power of a simple idea with a profound impact. With plans to expand further, possibly opening branches in the GCC, George envisions a future where 312 Café continues to break barriers and foster a sense of belonging for individuals with special needs. George urges readers to support individuals with special needs, describing them as angels brimming with love, positive energy, humility, and a pure heart. He expresses gratitude to his partner, Tareq, and especially to his wife, without whose unwavering support, 312 Café would never have become a reality. When he’s not busy with the café, which is rare, George enjoys sports like basketball, football, and swimming. But his true passion lies in being with his team, his angels he calls them. Despite a busy schedule, George promises to dedicate more time to his wife and son, acknowledging the crucial support that made the project possible. In a world that often forgets to slow down, 312 Café stands as a testament to the power of compassion, understanding, and the limitless potential within each one of us. It is an absolute must to stop by! Find out more information and keep current with their latest @cafe_312 35

The Art & Graphic Design Department at the American University of Kuwait (AUK) launched its Fall 2023 Capstone Design Exhibition which took place at the AUK Exhibition Center. The exhibition offered senior students an opportunity to display their creative work, which covered a range of themes, including social and cultural awareness, corporate identity, and entrepreneurship. ARE WE READY FOR THE SWEDISH FUTURE? In this Stockholm neighborhood, you won’t be able to drive a gas-powered car By Adele Peters

By the end of next year, if you want to drive to a central part of Stockholm, you’ll have to have an electric car or another vehicle that meets strict air-pollution standards. The city is going a step farther than London and other places with ultra-low-emissions zones: Instead of charging the most-polluting cars a fee, they’ll be banned completely in a 20-block area. “We want to do this because we want to do something about the problem with air pollution in Stockholm,” says Lars Strömgren, vice mayor for transport and urban environment for the City of Stockholm. “More and more research shows that [pollution] levels that were considered to be low have a substantial effect on the lungs.” Studies have shown that children living near the city’s dirtiest streets have reduced lung function by the age of six months old. Around 1,000 people in the city die early each year because of air pollution. The new low-emissions zone is filled with stores and offices, and right now, pedestrians and cyclists have to deal with heavy traffic. The district has been dominated by cars since the middle of the 20th century, Strömgren says. Sweden was “very carried away by the idea of the car, and the car-friendly city,” he says. “A lot of houses were demolished in the center, where people used to live, but then it was made into a central business district.” Separately, the city is trying to convince more people to walk, bike, or take public transit in the area, with new sidewalks, bike paths, safer crossings, and dedicated bus lanes. And Stockholm is experimenting with ways to help reduce congestion. In one pilot project, vehicles that deliver packages to businesses were also used to carry away trash from the neighborhood after they made deliveries. “I see this as a very creative phase, where different stakeholders that haven’t necessarily been talking to each other before realize that ‘Oh, together we could make this better,’” says Strömgren. As that work continues—with a goal to cut traffic by nearly a third by 2030 compared to 2017 levels—the new low-emissions zone is a way to tackle smog from the remaining vehicles. Electric and fuel-cell vehicles will be allowed, along with plug-in hybrid trucks and some natural gas vehicles that meet the EU’s strictest air pollution standards. (Emergency vehicles, and cars belonging to disabled drivers living in the area, are exempt from the ban on diesel- and gasfueled cars.) Stockholm didn’t consider creating a car-free neighborhood, though it does have some pedestrian-only streets. “I think you need a Swiss army knife for transport planning—you cannot have one-size-fitsall, but you need different street types in different areas,” Strömgren says. “In this area, we believe 42

because of the shops and offices and so on, that delivery needs to work.” Those deliveries will keep getting cleaner: The city plans to expand the lowemissions zone further in 2025. Stockholm plans to have 100,000 EV charging points by the end of

the decade—and to make the entire city center emissions-free by that point.

SARA ALROSHOUD Making movies and telling stories By bazaar Staff

44

It’s not every day you meet someone who has made an extreme career shift after decades of an already fulfilling and successful career. Sara AlRoshoud is an Executive Producer and Actor who is passionate about creativity and storytelling. Unlike many artists in the movie industry, she didn’t dream of becoming Hollywood’s next big star or spend her childhood years starring in school plays. As a child and young adult, she lived in several countries where she attended school and university and was exposed to colorful and diverse environments and cultures, that have definitely played a role in who she is today. She graduated from university with a degree in Business and a graduate degree in Human Resources, climbed the corporate ladder, and excelled. It wasn’t until the 2020 pandemic when she realized that life is short and that she might be interested in pursuing something wholly different, that she was more interested in. She was always interested in the art of movie-making and loves visiting studios whenever she travels to see the mechanics and “behind the scenes” of movie-making. Sara started taking classes and courses and was inspired to write her own short about a real-life experience at an airport. “I’ve always loved movies and the process of making a movie. I began by executive producing a short film called ‘Random Check’. While casting, I struggled to find the right person to portray me, so I started training at Stella Adler LA and then UCLA for my acting role. Since then, I’ve fallen in love with both producing and acting,” she explains. Sara’s energy is infectious and endearing, she is passionate about using her new vocation and skills to tell new stories. “I love immersing myself in different voices and narratives, and I’m always excited to see how stories shape our understanding of the world. The most exciting thing for me is the potential to explore uncharted narrative territory. I enjoy creating original stories, collaborating on scripts, and witnessing the movie come together as both producer and actor. The greatest challenge lies in overcoming the limitations of working on a film with a certain budget and finding a way to truly connect with an audience on an emotional level,” she says. After finishing Random Check, she worked on a short called Single Mother. Both shorts have yet to be published for the public and should be available by the end of the year. Currently, she is in the pre-production phase of a feature film. Sara says she is excited to see the project take off, and the main challenge for this project is mainly budget constraints. Sara is nowhere near being done, she wants to bring what she’s learned about the process of filmmaking and acting to Kuwait too as well as bring forth underrepresented perspectives. “I aim to include voices from all walks of life, and I strive to ensure my own output reflects this commitment to inclusivity,” she explains. We’re sure that she will do it all because, if we’ve learned anything from meeting her, it is that if you are interested in something and passionate about it, you will find a way to get it done. UNLEASHING POWER AND ELEGANCE

EXPLORING THE ALL-NEW PORSCHE CAYENNE S By bazaar Staff, photography by Leena Al Jabi

Getting behind the wheel of a Porsche is an electrifying symphony of power and precision, an immersive encounter with automotive excellence that transcends the mundane. From the moment you step into the car, there’s a palpable sense of refined performance coursing through every fiber of the car. This has only been elevated in the All-New Porsche Cayenne S, which we recently took for a ride around Kuwait.

Getting behind the wheel of a Porsche is an electrifying symphony of power and precision, an immersive encounter with automotive excellence that transcends the mundane. From the moment you step into the car, there’s a palpable sense of refined performance coursing through every fiber of the car. This has only been elevated in the AllNew Porsche Cayenne S, which we recently took for a ride around Kuwait. We started our journey from Marina in Salmiya. The glittering Arabian Gulf gave us a wonderful backdrop to our exhilarating ride. We made a quick stop at JACC in Kuwait city to enjoy the park’s greenery. Next we continued on the gulf road all the way to the Free Zone and were treated to a spectacular view of flamingos in their migration season. The drive was thrilling, seamlessly blending speed and control, while the agile handling imparts a feeling of being one with the road. The distinctive growl of the engine creates a harmonious melody, echoing the car’s legacy of high-performance prowess. In the cockpit, luxury meets functionality, enveloping you in a cocoon of elegant design and intuitive controls. With each twist of the wheel, the Porsche Cayenne S responds with a balletic grace, effortlessly navigating curves and straightaways alike. It’s more than a drive; it’s an automotive masterpiece, where the artistry of design meets the thrill of the road, leaving an indelible mark on the senses.

The new Porsche Driver Experience offers a completely revamped, intuitive display and control concept, making it much more focused and digitalized. Porsche has reinforced the visual presence of this successful model with extensive changes, the exterior design is now even more expressive and athletic. All the drive systems in the new Cayenne are more powerful than before and the Cayenne S now features a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo. Continued our relaxing drive, we crossed the bridge and stopped by the first island to take photos. We enjoyed watching families with their kids reveling in the view of the Kuwait skyline. After a brief respite we drove all the way across the bridge to the start of Subiya to test out this beauty on different terrains. Because selecting Normal, Offroad, Sport and Sport Plus driving modes directly on the steering wheel is now standard, it was a super smooth ride even when we went off-road. The new Cayenne drives like a dream because it is equipped with steel spring suspension as standard, including Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) for the first time. The regulated vibration dampers for the front and rear axle used by Porsche Active Suspension Management are equipped with a new two-valve technology. Instead of one valve for damping the body and wheel movements, the damper now features two valves that allow the rebound and compression stages to be changed separately. The advantage of the new technology is a significant increase in comfort and in driving safety.

The weather was perfect, but we’re also sure that the new upgrades to the car’s internal climate control features made it even better. Optional in the new Cayenne, it continuously measures the fine particle level (PM 2.5) in the vehicle interior as well as in the outside air and activates recirculation if the air quality around the vehicle declines. The air quality system then cleans the interior air by passing it through the fine dust filter several times.

An ioniser is also optionally available to remove germs and pollutants from the air. We love this for dustier days, a great solution for allergy sufferers. We continued our journey and drove all the way to the Jahra reserve. Winter is the perfect time of the year to catch the huge populations of birds flying in from all over the world for warmer climates. On our way home we marveled at the beauty of Kuwait and the perfection of a Porsche

drive. Comfort and luxury without compromising any of the power.

STAY AND PAY These are the cities where hotel rates are rising fastest By Lebawit Lily Girma

Hotel room rates in major cities from Boston to Mumbai are expected to jump by double digits, even after predictions that prices were finally hitting a ceiling, according to a new report. Buenos Aires takes this year’s crown, with rates that are set to jump by 17% year over year, according to the Hotel Monitor 2024 report from American Express Global Business Travel. It examines how hotel prices are fluctuating in more than 80 cities around the world, with forecasts based on criteria such as currently listed prices, broader macroeconomic trends, hotel pipelines and historic data. Hotel prices reflect much more than a destination’s current popularity with travelers. In the Argentina capital, rates are largely being driven by the country’s ongoing hyperinflation crisis, which in September reached its worst levels since 1991. (Notably, the Amex study calculates rate hikes in the local currency.) In other words, the rising prices in Buenos Aires are still likely to translate to deep savings for most anyone visiting from abroad. Second-place Mumbai has a more straightforward narrative. Its hotels are expected to rise in cost by 15% year over year; that’s undoubtedly a product of fast-growing domestic wealth and a long-delayed post-pandemic travel recovery. And given both of those factors apply country-wide, it’s no surprise that India claims three cities in the report’s top 10 list: Chennai and Delhi ranked fourth and seventh, respectively. Rounding out the top 10 are cities where tourism has been booming. Whereas Cairo has benefited from a largely leisure-driven audience, Chicago, Paris and Boston rank in the top 10 thanks to gains in business travel. The region with the most moderate rate increases is Australasia, where no single city is seeing projected increases greater than 6.8%. Prices are expected to rise at least somewhat in all 80 cities examined in the report. David Reimer, executive vice president of global clients at Amex GBT, sees several macro trends continuing to influence hotel pricing at a global level. Staffing shortages continue to be a problem in the hospitality industry, forcing some hotels to limit inventory — meaning they’re leaving rooms deliberately unsold — as a coping mechanism. That spreads soaring operating costs among fewer customers. Then there’s the issue of supply — the number of hotel rooms in any market — not keeping up with the demand. “Where there is lagging supply but demand remains high, rates will also rise,” Reimer says. The inverse can also be true. Rates are predicted to rise only moderately in cities such as Riyadh and 54

New York City, which will add a large number of new hotel rooms in the coming year. The report predicts that prices in those markets will be up 4.6% and 6.8%, respectively. (The report caveats that recent legislation curtailing short-term rentals in New York City may drive prices up in ways that are not reflected by Amex GBT’s data models.) Boston, on the other hand, has few new hotels in the works — which will be problematic for consumers as the city continues to show strong growth as a business travel hub, in addition to its perennial leisure and university-related travel demand. That explains the city’s sharp 11.5% projected spike. “Although there’s been a lot of talk with respect to the continuation of remote work, we’re seeing some kinds of business travel actually surpassing 2019 levels,” Reimer says. Specifically, it’s people traveling for trade shows or small internal meetings of 20 people or fewer, he says. At some companies, he adds, trips related to those more-intimate corporate functions have surpassed 2019 levels by as much as 25%. “We think that that will continue to be our fastest growing segment,” Reimer says. Of course, even with the projected hotel rate

increases, some of these cities still offer deep value. A room at an over-the-top hotel in Buenos Aires during peak season, for example, can cost just $600 a night; a 17.5% increase would add just a little over $100. Compare that to $2,000 a night in Paris during high season — the current going rate at a palace hotel — and the smaller-seeming 11% increase, valued at around $200, adds twice as much sting in absolute terms. Here are the top 10 cities around the world where hotel prices are set to soar most dramatically — along with how much more you can expect to pay in local currency, compared to last year. 10. Jakarta, Indonesia: 10.9% 9. Boston, US: 11.3% 8. Paris, France: 11% 7. Delhi, India: 12% 6. Chicago, US: 12.6% 5. Bogotá, Colombia: 14.1% 4. Chennai, India: 14.6 3. Cairo, Egypt: 14.6% 2. Mumbai, India: 15% 1. Buenos Aires, Argentina: 17.5% Photo by Marten Bjork on Unsplash.

THIS IS ETAF ALMUTAWA Finding her voice and choosing her path By bazaar Staff

We are made up of many things, from our past choices, present decisions, and future dreams to our inherited heritage, culture, and chosen path. Kuwaiti-Palestinian-Lebanese singer and songwriter Etaf is the perfect embodiment of the previous statement, a culmination of experiences and a deep sense of understanding identity Starting with her name, Etaf is her Palestinian grandmother’s namesake, which means deviation in Arabic, an act which she has mastered, by deviating from the road less taken and being unafraid of following her passion and heart. The 29-year-old artist was born and raised in Kuwait but moved to the UK for a doctorate in law. Yet, after practicing law and receiving her Ph.D., she realized that what she really wanted to do was make music. She has mastered several instruments, and plays the piano, guitar and oud. Etaf is ultimately proud of her Arabic roots and being part of the diaspora. Her music draws on her Arabic heritage and she proudly wears her ga7feya everywhere and sings mainly in Arabic, but since moving to London, she has started weaving English into her songs, too. Etaf can even recall the exact moment in her life when she realized that she loved singing. She was 11 years old, and even though she was shy, she sang, and her mother encouraged her to keep going. Etaf released her first single “7a2” (Haa’ meaning Right in Arabic) in June 2023. 7a2 challenges expectations around how Arabic music should be composed and has captivated audiences around London. She is currently working on several songs that will continue to subvert expectations. Her second song, “Taboot” (coffin) which was recorded in Kuwait, and released in January of 2024. Etaf is also preparing to release her first EP, Feemale, Feemale is about longing for unconditional love and freedom. Her melodic and soulful voice lulls you into a sense of safety, while tackling big feels and even heavier topics. When asked how she would describe her genre of music, she explains that she refers to it as shisma (the Kuwaiti equivalent of whatchamacallit). It makes more sense when you consider the artist herself, she breaks barriers and rejects labels, and her music exemplifies this. “I think there isn’t really much of a difference between practicing law for 10 years and now music, in terms of what I am trying to deliver, what I care about, what, what story I’m trying to communicate with people. And what values that I am conscious of in creating that content,” Etaf explains. 56

Etaf is conscious of how her music is both political and intersectional. She stands for women’s, minorities, and human rights in general. This is an exceptionally difficult time for the artist, who has roots in Gaza and has lost around 50 family members. She believes that everything is political and that her music is also her banner for freedom and liberation. “Music comes from pain and from trauma and emotions, from excitement, from happiness, from needs, from vulnerability. Fragility like this is what music is. So in this way, and from this kind of philosophical way, music is important because it says something about that person who is making it. I think of music as communicating something that resonates with me, something that’s real that’s authentic. That’s genuine. That tells a story about me, but also like I want to make it in a way that people can relate to,” she elaborates. Etaf is clear and unapologetic about her desire to become a full-time musician, yet her greatest challenge is funding. She explains that London’s music scene is very competitive, and artists constantly fight for attention and exposure. To

help herself and others, Etaf started a Whatsapp group that brings people together and helps everyone collaborate on their projects. She also mentions that she has found support and solace in the diaspora music community in London. We can’t wait to hear and see what she will be doing next. Until then, we’ll be jamming to her tunes online on Spotify.

PARADISE REDISCOVERED Unveiling the allure of Sun Siyam Iru Veli By bazaar Staff

Maldives is a destination that is on every avid traveler’s list, with the lush beaches and plethora of activities, it was no different for us! So, when we were invited to visit Sun Siyam Iru Veli, we jumped at the opportunity, packed our bags and plane hopped to the stunning island.

62

Two flights, one sea plane journey, and countless hours of excitement later, my husband, two kids and I arrived at Sun Siyam Iru Veli. As soon as we stepped onto the island, we were welcomed with Maldivian hospitality, which is definitely special in its own right. The island is just one of the most stunning destinations we have ever been to. We were welcomed at the Chemistry lounge with a variety of delicious juices and coconut waters and delightful fruits. Oh, how we wish we could go back. Every one that checks in has their own host or hostess, that facilitates your stay, helps with bookings, will chauffeur you in buggies as well if needed, and just takes care of you during your stay. No ask was ever too big for our hostess. The island features a collection of overwater and beachfront villas. With our mini monsters we opted for a beach front villa to be able to enjoy beach living at its best. There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to rooms, some that are great for the sunset views, some for the sunrise views, and a few of the top of the range villas that offer both. Every villa has its own swimming pool either facing the beach or the ocean, but if you prefer a little more privacy, there is the option of a villa with an enclosed pool as well. As soon as we had settled into our rooms, we headed over to Aqua Orange, which became one of our favorite restaurants. The restaurant is just off the beach and offers a buffet of international foods. We enjoyed many of the live cooking stations, and the special dish of the day. The restaurant hosts a variety of nights throughout the week, we especially enjoyed the Maldivian night which featured local delicacies with a keen focus on seafood. They also unearthed a fish that had been cooking in the ground for many hours. The result, tender, juicy fish that has a delicious aroma. We also especially enjoyed the Asian night; we indulged in a lot of sushi. Other restaurants on the island are Grouper Grill, a Maldivian restaurant that specializes in seafood, and Roma, which made us one of the best risottos we have EVER had, no lies! All of the restaurants are a must try, they are either set on the beach or have an ocean view.

63

There are also themed-nights at Chemistry lounge, and we were lucky enough to enjoy a Maldivian show on our first night. It was a great insight into the local culture. Other special nights include karaoke, if you like singing, trivia nights, and more. There is also an adult-only lounge that is perfect for those of us that would like to enjoy some kid-free time or are traveling with just a partner or friends. We loved the all-inclusive aspect of Sun Siyam Iru Veli, you don’t have to think about anything but enjoying yourselves, and just living the slow life (if you choose), or taking part in the variety of activities to choose from! I especially enjoyed snorkeling. We were on a boat for about 30 minutes, then jumped into the water to see the most beautiful underwater life there is to experience. I saw a shark just a few meters away, and lots of bright, colorful fish, and some very dull and dark fish – but it is definitely a different world out there. The next day we went out on a sunset dolphin cruise, with hopes of seeing, well, dolphins. Although we were not very lucky, we were able to enjoy the views and serenity of the Maldives against the orange and gold backdrop of sunset. There are a variety of water sports to choose from, including jet skiing and canoeing, to just name a few. There is also a castaway experience, where you can be dropped off to a tiny, remote island for a few hours, and you can enjoy a picnic and water fun in complete solace. Sounds glorious, but perhaps not with kids in tow! What we especially loved for the little ones was the Kids Club, this was ideal to be able to either drop off the kids, or allow them to run wild and get their energy out while we watched on. The club offers a variety of activities and also offers nanny services. This was especially useful for us when we enjoyed the resort’s fabulous spa treatments. This is one 64

you should not miss – the venue itself is stunning and the views of the ocean, the sea life swimming below, all make for an especially relaxing treatment. While on holiday, our son got very sick, and being on an island, the panic set in. We didn’t have to worry though, there is a full-equipped clinic on site with a great medical professional that we visited, but they also came and checked in on us several times. We were so lucky to receive medical care on site – although it did put a damper on the holiday, it is definitely a must when picking our holiday destination from here on forth, especially if traveling with elderly or kids. While our son was sick, the staff went over and beyond taking us for buggy rides, showing us the baby sharks and stingrays in the water, and sending us coconut waters and meals to our rooms so that we had nothing to worry about. That sort of consideration is what makes a destination special. At Sun Siyam Iru Veli, the dedication to guest satisfaction is woven into the fabric of the resort’s ethos. The attentive staff anticipates every need, ensuring that guests not only receive top-notch service but also experience the warmth of Maldivian hospitality. From the moment we arrived to the time we left, the team left no stone unturned in creating a seamless and unforgettable stay for us. We had the loveliest holiday at Sun Siyam Iru Veli, and would go back in a heartbeat. KAPOK ARRIVES AT MUJI

This sustainable natural fiber changes everything we know about comfort By bazaar Staff

We are longtime fans of advancements in textile technology that help create more sustainable options for us. MUJI have just introduced a new line of Kapok-based garments that are light, airy, and comfortable to wear.

If, like us, you have never heard of Kapok before, we’re coming at you with a crash course. Kapok, or Kapok fiber, is also known as ceiba or Java cotton the fine fibers that are made from the fruit of the kapok tree (scientific name: Ceiba pentandra in the bombax family Bombacaceae, 78

which we’re really vibing with). The trees naturally grow in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. What makes Kapok amazing, is that it requires less water than cotton and needs no chemical derivatives during production, making its environmental impact much lower. Additionally, the

fibers are harvested from seed pods of the kapok tree, which has a hollow structure, weighing at just an eighth of the weight of cotton. The resulting fabric produced features excellent moisture absorption and heat retention, making it versatile for cold and warm climes alike.

The MUJI Kapok collection features items for both men and women, in MUJI’s classic clean silhouettes and versatile colors that can be easily introduced and mixed into any wardrobe. We love the women’s Kapok Blend Double Gauze Long Sleeve Dress. It’s the perfect layering piece that can be worn during warm and cool months. It is available in several colors too. Kapok can also be blended with denim, as seen in the Kapok Blended Denim Jacket for men. It is lightweight and breathable. The structured jacket in classic dark navy makes it a timeless wardrobe staple that can be worn for years to come. MUJI’s fiber choices and clean styles coupled together make all their pieces sustainable because you don’t need to chase trends, and you can always be elegant and timeless.

Explore the new MUJI Kapok styles by visiting the MUJI stores in 2nd Avenue – The Avenues, Grand Avenue – The Avenues, Al Kout Mall or muji.com.kw. For more information, follow MUJI on Instagram @mujimiddleeast. 79

BIOCHAR An ancient farming technique that could help fight climate change By Adele Peters

On a site next to a sawmill in Waverly, Virginia, a startup takes sawdust and offcuts from the mill and heats it up to turn it into biochar, a material that can store carbon for hundreds or thousands of years. The project, which recently began operating, will capture a little more than 10,000 metric tons of CO2 each year. Microsoft will buy the carbon removal credits as part of its plan to become a carbon negative company. It’s one of a growing number of biochar production plants. The potential is big: A new study calculated that if biochar production scales up as much as possible globally, it could capture as much as 3 billion metric tons of CO2 a year, or 6% of global emissions. Here’s how it works. What is biochar? When organic waste (like wheat stalks or manure from a farm, or sawdust from forestry) is heated up to extremely high temperatures without oxygen, it turns into a charcoal-like material known as biochar. The material has a long history— indigenous communities in South America used it at least 8,000 years ago in farming, because when it’s added to the soil, it helps plants grow. But it’s also increasingly becoming one tool to help tackle climate change. How does it store carbon? Plants suck up CO2 as they grow, but that CO2 is normally released again quickly—if crop waste stays in a field after harvest, it will rot and release emissions. The same thing happens with fallen branches in a forest, or organic waste in a landfill. But if organic material is turned into biochar, that stops most of it from breaking down. “That process essentially takes part of the carbon in the original biomass and locks it into a very stable form that will reduce degradation of the carbon for hundreds or thousands of years,” says Thomas Trabold, a professor at Rochester Institute of Technology and one of the coauthors of the new study.

hold water and nutrients, so farmers need less irrigation and fertilizer. (Fertilizers are another large source of emissions; the new study didn’t add up that benefit.) It also can have other benefits beyond farms. Biochar companies can use wood cleared from forests at risk of wildfires, for example. And the biochar itself can also be used in other ways, including as an ingredient in concrete to help make the material stronger while it stores carbon.

Where can it be produced? The equipment that makes biochar can be used either at a small scale—at an individual farm, for example—or in larger facilities that collect waste from multiple sources. For the lowest carbon footprint, it makes sense to have a location that’s near the source of the organic waste and near the places where the biochar will later be used. To calculate how much biochar could be produced globally, the study looked at how much crop waste and other organic waste exists in 155 countries. In the U.S. alone, there’s the potential to produce enough biochar to sequester nearly 400 million metric tons of CO2 a year.

What are the advantages compared to other types of carbon removal? Biochar is considered a relatively permanent form of carbon storage, unlike planting trees that face the risk of later being cut down or burning in a forest fire. It’s also cheaper than technology like direct air capture, massive machines that suck CO2 out of the air. Equipment to produce biochar isn’t complicated to build. “What makes biochar interesting is it is one of the few sort of near-termscalable removal credits,” says Justin Cochrane, CEO of Carbon Streaming, the company that helped finance the project in Waverly, Virginia.

How does biochar help on farms? Under a microscope, biochar looks like a sponge. If it’s added to soil, the spongy structure helps it

Why isn’t it widely used now? The cost has been a barrier in the past. But because of the ability to sell carbon credits now,

86

that’s changing. “The industry existed for at least a decade with no means of financial reward . . . for all the carbon removed, we couldn’t get a dime for it,” says Josiah Hunt, CEO of Pacific Biochar, a company that makes biochar from sources like wood cleared from forests to prevent fires. “Since 2020, there has been a profound change in the biochar industry allowing for companies not only to survive but thrive.” How does it fit into the bigger picture of tackling climate change? The most critical piece of climate action is reducing emissions—most of which will happen by ditching fossil fuels. But as emissions drop, we’ll still need to remove CO2 from the air, both to deal with emissions that are difficult to eliminate immediately and to eventually begin to remove excess CO2 that’s built up in the atmosphere. Biochar is only one piece of the solution. But its potential to remove 6% of global emissions is significant. That’s equivalent to the climate pollution from more than 800 coal power plants, or nearly three times as much as the CO2 emissions from the airline industry.

ROKA MARKS ITS 20-YEAR MILESTONE A Culinary Extravaganza to delight the senses By bazaar Staff

This year, one of our favorite Japanese robatayaki restaurants, Roka, celebrates two decades of culinary excellence in the UK, tracing its roots back to the iconic Charlotte Street location in London. Roka has become synonymous with the art of ‘robatayaki’ cuisine, and its Kuwait branch is joining the global festivities by reintroducing some of its most beloved dishes over the last two decades. We are so excited to try some of the culinary delights that are being fired up!

88

Twenty years on, our menus remain authentic to the Roka story.

At the heart of Roka’s gastronomic experience lies the central robata, where the ancient Japanese method of ‘robatayaki’ comes to life. Diners have the unique opportunity to witness the preparation and cooking of dishes over an open coal flame which is always such a treat. It brings an authentic touch to the dining experience. Co-founder of Azumi Ltd and creator of the Roka concept, Rainer Becker, who conceptualized Roka during his time in Tokyo, expressed his passion for the complexity of Japanese cuisine. “Twenty years on, our menus remain authentic to the Roka story. We aim to strike a balance with the clean Japanese cooking techniques that piqued my early interest - beautiful fresh sashimi, and of course, robata grilled meats. BEAN THERE WORN THAT Why your next pair of eyeglasses will probably be made from beans By Nate Berg

There’s a surprising similarity in most eyewear, whether it’s a luxury frame that can cost thousands of dollars or a pair of lowbudget readers available at the drugstore. Across this gargantuan price spectrum, a majority of eyeglasses are made of plastic. And despite the supposed recyclability of the material, millions of pairs of fossil-fuel-based glasses end up thrown into landfills every year. Marchon, one of the largest eyewear designers and producers in the world, hopes to change that. Instead of continuing to rely on plastic, Marchon is finding inventive ways to use recycled and bio-based materials in the 22 million frames it produces annually for brands like LaCoste, Nike, and Calvin Klein. “Within just a few years we’ve developed an entire tool kit of more than a dozen materials that are more sustainable, either recycled or bio-based, and fossil-fuel-free,” says Marchon President Thomas Burkhardt. “Virtually all the major producers have followed suit.” One of the most successful plastic alternatives is made out of the oil of castor beans, the seeds of a fast-growing tree that’s mostly grown in India. Burkhardt says that initially, using a plant-based material sounded like a fantasy. “One of my colleagues put a frame on my desk and said, ‘Here are new sunglasses made of castor beans,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah right,’” he says. But the frame—from Marchon’s surf and ski line Dragon—looked and felt just like others made from conventional plastics. So Burkhardt, who was heading out for a vacation in California, decided to give the sunglasses a try. “I literally torture-tested that frame,” he says. “I thought the moment I stepped into the sea and salt water with that frame it’s going to dissolve. I actually left it overnight in a bucket of salt water. And you know what? I still have that frame, and it’s still as good as new.” That led Burkhardt to push for even more castor bean glasses. Within a few months, the entire line of Dragon frames had been changed to use castor bean-based biomaterials. It also spurred an effort across the company to convert more of its frames to bio-based and recycled materials, both for in-house brands like Dragon and for work it licenses to Calvin Klein, Lacoste, Nike, and Ferragamo, among others. Burkhardt says moving away from plastic is not as simple as taking one material out of a factory and substituting another. New materials had to undergo extensive engineering and review processes, not unlike his own makeshift “torture testing” in California. He notes that this transition has been in the works for about five years. “Eyewear is a funny category in the sense that the demand for the quality of materials is extremely high,” he says. “In the end, an optical frame is a medical device. It sits on your face for 92

12, 18 hours, it needs to be hypoallergenic, it needs to be resistant to heat and other external factors. We needed to find materials that are good enough to meet all of those demands.” The alternative materials now making their way into the mid- and luxury-range frames Marchon manufactures include recycled stainless steel, recycled and bio-based acetates from the materials company Eastman, and upcycled plastics. The most impactful, though, is the castor bean-based biomaterial. “For traditional plastic frames, this is the key substitute,” Burkhardt says. And the substitution has mostly happened without a hitch, even for the company’s designers, who work to craft high-end and highly visible accessories that can be as much about image as improved vision. “For the designers it’s really more of a question of why not? Why would I not use

the more sustainable alternative? And there are very few exceptions where that’s not possible,” Burkhardt says. It also helps that switching to lower-carbon materials like castor beans helps Marchon and its partners meet their own environmental targets. Such alternative materials are on their way to becoming mainstream. In 2022, Marchon produced a quarter of its frames from recycled and bio-based materials. This year, the company is on track to hit 35%. Burkhardt set a goal of making at least 50% of frames with these materials by 2025. “That is the goal,” he says, noting that he expects to get there even earlier, as the days of plastic dominating the eyewear industry could very well be ending. EVOLVING WELLNESS: JANA AROMAS’ NATURE-DRIVEN LIFESTYLE IN KUWAIT Local sensibilities for global impact By bazaar Staff

When local lifestyle concept Jana Aromas first started its operation back in 2020, the wellness space in Kuwait was also carving for itself a larger part in consumers’ minds. Today, more than ever, mindfulness and wellness play a key driving force in shaping buying decisions. How a product adds value to one’s life while minimizing its environmental footprint is a question consumers are asking, and going local is no longer a trend in Kuwait; it is now a way of life. This is why the burgeoning local brand continues to evolve its nature-driven approach, creating bespoke lifestyle additions to the home from the heart of Kuwait. Founded by local entrepreneur Hamad Al-Khudher three years ago, Jana Aromas thrives on its mission to enrich people’s lives most naturally and sustainably as possible. No abrasive chemicals, no nasties, just pure, nature-driven goodness goes into the brand’s curated ranges of hand-poured soybased candles, room sprays, essential oils, traditional ma’moul, and lifestyle accessories that are hand-made using naturally sourced ingredients. He describes his journey so far as extremely fulfilling, “The journey has been a constant source of learning, allowing me to exert a positive influence, particularly in sustainability in my hometown of Kuwait. My goal has always been to create products that not only bring joy but also contribute to the well-being of individuals.” Indeed, Jana Aromas is a brand that is constantly instilling positivity, happiness, relaxation, and a sense of wellness, and the brand’s loyal customers do have firm favorites. Bestsellers include the Fresh Linen Room Spray, both of the Cleanse and Soothe Candles, Eucalyptus Essential Oil and the renowned Misk aromatic Ma’moul. Jana Aromas continues to celebrate its roots in Kuwait, with traditional offerings of incredible ma’moul bukhour gaining traction abroad, with oriental scents seeping into more modern offerings like the Oud Essence hand-poured Soy Wax Candle, or the reed diffuser version, complete with all-natural bamboo sticks. If you’re on the lookout for heritage-inspired National Day giveaways for your loved ones, you can opt for a gift set or Discovery set from Jana Aromas! While most of the high-quality ingredients employed for Jana Aromas’ lifestyle creations are sourced from abroad, everything is handmade and produced with love in Kuwait. With sales outlets in London 94

(and being prominently featured in UK’s Vanity Fair), the brand has been able to reach more customers on an international scale, garnering support and growing an avid following for home scents suited for every taste. Al-Khudher has long witnessed the success of other Western brands in the same field, and today is fulfilling his dream of creating a concept grown in Kuwait, but with sustainability at the heart of Jana Aromas’ every aspect of the operation. There’s no over-ordering of supplies here to appease a mass market appeal. Most items on offer are made-to-order, and most of Jana Aromas’ product packaging is either reusable or compostable. The brand even encourages its customers to return the beautiful amber-colored glass containers of the candles or ma’moul if they will not be reusing them. For Al-Khudher, having a slow, sustainable format for his business is a priority, He said, “I didn’t pick the easiest business to be in. Because of our location in Kuwait, and the fact that we are sourcing ingredients from abroad, we have to always ask questions to ensure that these ingredients are indeed vegan, clean, and cruelty-free. We read about greenwashing all the time, and I never make claims about Jana Aromas without checking first. Being completely waste-free in Kuwait is next to impossible, but we take extra steps to ensure that we minimize our environmental footprint in other ways.” Al-Khudher has learned to make changes, and be patient, about his production process to make sure that the quality of the products at Jana Aromas is consistently high. Today, ingredients used in the famous ranges are sourced in the cooler winter months to prepare for the year ahead, rather than procure items in the warmer months and risk his ingredients toxifying and becoming damaged

in the heat. It is a slower production process, but it works well for Jana Aromas. Al-Khudher’s creative process is fueled by inspiration, with his profound passion for scent and a firm belief in the power of fragrance to elevate an individual’s well-being. This inspiration stems from a diverse range of sources. Most importantly, he also places particular importance on the feedback and sentiments expressed by Jana Aromas’ customers. Whether it’s comments on Instagram regarding specific products or suggestions for inclusion, he values this input, mindful that the ultimate recipients are the consumers—his target market. Newer introductions like Sage incense sticks and the signature incense holder designed for mindfulness and meditation, or fruit-inspired scents like the Spring Orchard Room Spray, are all conceived to create a special experience for the person enjoying it. Born in Kuwait, for Kuwait and the world to enjoy, we are proud to have Jana Aromas in our midst. The local lifestyle brand takes pride in presenting products that remain competitive

in quality and offering. A brand ethos that is unpretentious, passionate about the local environment, and delivers exactly what’s written on the label: Clean, natural goods imbued with classic, traditional aromas. Al-Khudher’s goal with Jana Aromas is to influence individuals to choose products that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally conscious and sustainable. He continues to do this across Jana Aromas’ social media platforms, as well as sister company Plato & Seco. Educating customers about the ingredients he utilizes and why, sharing information about sustainability, recycling, and ways to contribute positively to the environment. Ultimately, Jana Aromas sources ingredients from the Earth, such as lemongrass and frankincense, and Al-Khudher feels that it’s only fitting to give back to this planet by being mindful of how we run our businesses. TOYOTA GAZOO WORLD RALLY

TEAM TAKES THE PRIZE A flawless 1-2-3 Podium Finish at Rally Japan

96

[...Continued]

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) World Rally Team (WRT) scored a flawless 1-2-3 podium finish on home roads at the FIA World Rally Championship’s (WRC) Rally Japan to complete a season of success in style. Elfyn Evans, followed by Sébastien Ogier and Kalle Rovanperä, all claimed victory in their No. 33, No. 17, and No. 69 Toyota GR YARIS Rally1 Hybrid Electric Vehicles respectively. The triumph, for Evans and co-driver Scott Martin, is their third of the season and the ninth in 13 rallies this year for TGR. Toyota, meanwhile, had already sealed its manufacturers’ title during round 11 of Rally Chile before Rovanperä and Jonne Halttunen secured their second drivers’ and co-drivers’ titles on the penultimate event, the Central European Rally. Akio Toyoda, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Toyota Motor Corporation and TGR-WRT Chairman, commented: “‘To foster the culture of rallying through continuous improvement in a Japanese way’ and ‘to make the rally an essential autumn tradition in Japan’. Rally Japan this year made all of these things come true. The most impressive thing was that we were able to use Toyota Stadium as one of the special stages allowing us to watch the top drivers driving up close and in front of that many spectators. It was a rally full of exciting and amazing experiences for both fans and drivers. If we continue this kind of rally events, I am sure that motorsport will become a culture in Japan and be more popular. I would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make Rally Japan 2023 a great success.” [Continued...]

This was the WRC’s second visit to the technical and demanding asphalt roads in the mountains of the Aichi and Gifu prefectures around Toyota City. Heavy rain added significantly to day one’s challenges, and this was where Evans built the foundations of his victory. Two stage wins in the most extreme wet morning weather helped him to open up a lead of almost one minute and 50 seconds over his team-mates. Day two and three brought further changeable and slippery weather conditions, but Evans managed both days expertly to seal the win. Meanwhile, Ogier and Rovanperä focused on maximising the team’s result rather than their own positions in tricky weather conditions to finally emerge in second and third place. Over the years, Toyota has been participating in many different forms of motorsports, including Formula One, the World Endurance Championship (WEC), and the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race. Toyota’s participation in these events was overseen by separate entities within the company until April 2015, when Toyota established TGR, to consolidate all of its motorsports activities under one in-house brand. Representing Toyota’s belief that ‘the roads build the people, and the people build the cars,’ TGR highlights the role of motorsports as a fundamental pillar of Toyota’s commitment to making ‘ever-better’ cars. Harnessing years of experience gained under the extreme conditions of various motorsports events, TGR aims to forge new technologies and solutions that bring the freedom, adventure, and joy of driving to everyone. SKY HIGH Global airlines are aiming higher for flights that are ultra-longer By Mary Ann Anderson

Scoot over, Singapore Airlines, there will soon be a new sheriff in town, er, in the sky, as competition for the world’s longest nonstop flight is winging its way forward. The world is about to become smaller, its farthest-flung corners closer than ever before, and it happens all in one long, long, long flight. Although ultra-long flights are nothing new, every few years or so, an airline embarks on a journey to stretch the limits of imagination and set a new record that makes traveling the globe nonstop easier. This time around, it’s Qantas, the national airline of Australia. Qantas is taking off in 2025 with a Sydney to London Heathrow route that will cover 9,190 nautical miles and take almost 20 hours to complete. Before that flight takes off and you want to sample the current world’s longest nonstop flight, look to Singapore Airlines. According to OAG Aviation, the company that officially keeps track of aviation fun facts, the recordholder since 2021 for the world’s longest flight in distance is Singapore Airlines’ New York JFK to Singapore Changi route, clocking in at an extraordinary 18 hours and 40 minutes and leaving in its vapor trail a distance of 8,279 nautical miles, calculated using great-circle distance. Its next competitor is, well, itself, with a flight from Newark Liberty International to Singapore Changi measuring in at 8,277 nautical miles, just two miles shorter than the blue-ribbon winner of JFK to Singapore. Both flights are operated by the comfortable ultra-long-range Airbus A350-900. Rounding out the top five longest flights is Qantas’ Perth to Heathrow flight at 17 hours and 45 minutes and 7,829 nautical miles, followed by yet another Qantas flight from Dallas-Fort Worth to Melbourne at 17 hours and 35 minutes for 7,814 nautical miles. The list rounds out with a tie between Qantas and Air New Zealand for the Auckland to New York route for 7,671 nautical miles and clocking in at 16 hours and 15 minutes. Each of these flights is aboard the Boeing 787-9, a workhorse for international aircraft. Nautical miles differ from land miles and are based on the circumference of the earth. A nautical mile equals one minute of latitude. The Singapore Airlines flight from JFK to Singapore, then, is 9,537 land miles as compared with its 8,279 nautical miles. Consider this nonstop flight in perspective. A satellite-tagged bar-tailed godwit, a beautifully feathered, sandpiper-like wading bird equipped by Mother Nature for long-distance travel, flew directly if not tenaciously across the Pacific from Alaska to Tasmania, some 8,425 miles, without stopping for food or rest. The journey took 11 days and one hour, and not once did it complain of jet lag. 100

Also just for fun, consider that the International Space Station travels nonstop at lightning speeds of 17,500 miles per hour, meaning it orbits Earth every 90 minutes or so. Every day, the crew is treated to 16 sunrises and sunsets. Whether aviation, avian or aeronautics of space, there’s always a record to be broken. The upcoming Qantas flight from Sydney to London, part of the airline’s Project Sunrise program, takes off in 2025 with a specially designed widebody Airbus A350 that generously will have fewer seats than other long-haul aircraft. Instead of the 300plus passenger count that is normal for long-haul flights, these marathon flights will have just 238 seats, which in turn means more legroom and cabin space. That means more comfort for passengers as the plane whisks across the continents. Project Sunrise is, according to Qantas’ website, “the final frontier of aviation,” with the goal of delivering more direct routes to Australia and significantly reducing travel time of up to four hours as compared to one-stop flights. Qantas also promises a “second to none” flying experience inspired by medical and scientific research. With the timing of the flights, passengers could wake up to two sunrises within one flight. Of course, if you pony up to fly first class for the epic flight, Qantas plans for extra-wide beds, a 32-inch ultra-high-definition television, a 22-inch wide recliner lounger chair and access to its sophisticated and snazzy first class lounges at airports around the world, all of which come complete with world-class restaurants in case you plan to eat before you fly to leave more time to sleep onboard the aircraft.

As a veteran of several long-haul flights — I’ve flown New York to Johannesburg on South African Airways, Newark to Singapore on Singapore Airlines, Atlanta to Istanbul on Turkish Airways, and most recently Los Angeles to Brisbane on Qantas — I wonder how airplanes can stay up in the air for so long and not drop out of the sky. In a nutshell, it’s because long-haul aircraft makers like Boeing and Airbus use more fuel-efficient, lighter materials and better aerodynamics. Crew fatigue isn’t an issue, as flight attendants and pilots are swapped out and rest in private compartments hidden away behind secret staircases. Meals, of which you can expect two or three on most ultra-long-haul flights, are often overseen by renowned chefs. Qantas lounges and inflight meals, for example, are directed by Chef Neil Perry, one of the best known chefs in Australia, while Singapore Airlines’ International Culinary Panel consists of epicurean titans including Georges Blanc of France, Matt Moran of Sydney, Sanjeev Kapoor of Mumbai, Yoshihiro Murata of Kyoto, and Zhu Jun of Shanghai. Rejoice, global nomads, rejoice. With nonstops that take as long as the Qantas and Singapore Airlines routes, you’ll worry less about missing a tight connection or losing your luggage and instead enjoy the time above the clouds and catching up on reading or napping, noshing on gourmet food and snacks, and catching a sunrise or two. RAMADAN READY HOMES WITH IKEA ®

Prep your home for the holy month one room at a time! By bazaar Staff

Another year has passed by in the blink of an eye, and Ramadan is almost here. The holy month is always a time for recharging and reconnecting, whether spiritually, personally, or with loved ones. During Ramadan, many of us end up spending more time at home, whether we’re entertaining guests or spending time on our own. Creating a welcoming and cozy space will make the month much more enjoyable. The GOKVÄLLÅ Ramadan Collection from IKEA will instantly add Ramadan vibes to your home, but we want more, so we’ve put together a quick guide that will help you make all your rooms Ramadan ready, with a quick visit to IKEA. Kitchen The kitchen is the focal point of any home. Take stock of your food storage solutions at home. We love Iftar leftovers, and having different containers to store food in the fridge or the freezer means nothing goes to waste. It also makes it easier to share your favorite dish with your neighbors, friends, and loved ones. It’s also a great time to make sure that you have all the tools and utensils you need. A good chef’s knife is the most important in your arsenal. The ones available at IKEA are great and will last for years if you care for them properly. Dining Room Graish, Iftar, Ghabgha and Suhoors are always better if the table is artfully set. We came across the concept of tablescapes a handful of years ago on Pinterest and never looked back. Instead of thinking of individual elements or sets like silverware and dinnerware, we think of the overall narrative the table tells. We tie all the elements together. IKEA’s basic options are the perfect neutral starting point, then adding beautiful serving trays and dishes from the GOKVÄLLÅ will build a beautiful look. 102

Living Room After a satisfying and filling Iftar we usually head to the living room to chill, watch our mosalsalat and get ready for Ghabgha. Having a comfortable couch is the first step to post-meal bliss. The GOKVÄLLÅ cushions and throws add an extra level of coziness and are very Ramadan chic. Lighting is another secret to creating an inviting space. Floor lamps, table lamps, and fairy lights create extra dimensions in a room and remove the need for harsh overhead lighting, creating a magical ambiance. Bedroom Sleep is always challenging during Ramadan. Making sure that your bed is comfy is an essential step in healthy sleep hygiene. Replace your mattress or pillows if it is time. Invest in new bedding to signal to your brain that this is a time of renewal and self-care. Block-out curtains are another great addition to any room. A pitch-black room helps promote deeper sleep, and it is such an easy change to make, too. Bathroom Nobody wants their guests to see their old towels. Switch out your old towels with fresh new ones to give your bathroom a spa-like feel. Another easy way to freshen up the space is by adding candles. Balconies and Gardens We’re expecting much nicer weather this year during Ramadan, and we think we might be able to spend more time outdoors, especially after the sun goes down. If you have a garden or a large enough balcony, consider decking it out to fit a table for an al fresco Ghabgha or Suhoor. IKEA has several options for garden and patio furniture that would match any style or budget. Get ready for a festive Ramadan and Eid by visiting IKEA the Avenues, IKEA the Warehouse (Sabahiya), IKEA 360, IKEA Assima, IKEA Khiran or shopping online at www.IKEA.com.kw. MOTHER’S DEATH … … and Other Irritations By Craig Loomis

He grew up next to the Pyramids. If he were to take the stairs all the way to the rooftop, he could see their ghostly geometry in the Giza haze. But these days he never goes to the rooftop, too many kids go there to smoke, to do who knows what. The minute he opens the rooftop door there is a giant scurry as they rush to hide behind the water tanks, thinking it might be their fathers, or worse, their mothers. Truth be told, over these many years the Pyramids have become nothing special, three grand stony points of rock, and that’s that. His cousin in Aswan says he’s lucky to be so close to ancient history because all he has is a dam that’s not so ancient. Still, the Pyramids are important, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, say the guidebooks, and when it comes to the ancient world the tourists are relentless. The Chinese are the worst, or the best, depending on who you ask. Even when he can’t see the Pyramids, he knows they are there, their dusty bigness filling up the desert. He wants to leave Egypt. He has had his fill of artifacts and tombs and Howard Carter wanna-be’s; not to mention the many cousins and friends who believe life is all about the WWE, a new video game, who think Liverpool’s Salah should be the next president, who think…… He had heard good things about South America. There is not much in the way of deserts there, a lot of green, even jungle. Not too long ago, two school friends had saved enough money to visit something called Patagonia for a summer and had invited him to come with them. He’d like to, he said, but two things held him back; thing number one, no money and thing two, his mother. They said they could help with the money part. “Yes, thank you, my friends, but as you well know that is the easy part.” They laughed even though it was not meant to be funny. That night he decides to visit the rooftop and there, as expected, is a group of teen smokers who turn wide-eyed to him, the glow of their cigarettes suddenly vanishing. Once they see it is only him, the glow of their cigarettes return and they go about their rooftop business. Meanwhile, second-floor Ahmed is at the far corner of the rooftop, talking on his phone. He sees him and quickly finishes his talk. They shake hands even though they shook hands this morning at the café, and then in the street three hours later. Ahmed is in college and wants to be a businessman like his father and uncles. Ahmed thinks Germany is a better idea than South America. Two of his cousins are living, working, in Hamburg, he says. “They like it and everybody speaks Arabic in their neighborhood. It is like a mini-Cairo they tell me.” This Arabic part does not impress him, and he says so, “Well, might as well stay here if it’s 106

all about the language, sah?” “This is true,” he replies and turns to look into his telephone. Ahmed’s ‘this is true’ is, he has learned, Ahmed’s way of saying but not saying ‘let’s talk about something else.’ And so they do: about football—always football—about aunts who insist they marry: ‘What’s taking you so long? What’s the problem? I have a friend whose daughter would be the perfect match,’ and so on. There is a coffee shop he goes to almost daily. It is not too close to his apartment, which is a good thing. When he walks in they call him by his first name, which always makes him feel good, and the times they are too busy to welcome him, they know what he eats and drinks and bring it to his table. This, too, makes him feel good. And yet, he feels the need to leave this place next to the Pyramids. Not too long ago, a friend, Khaled, saw him sitting at the cafe all alone and decided to sit with him. Although they greeted each other, Khaled was not really interested in talking, he just wanted to sit next to a familiar face. He has always liked this about Khaled, and they sip their tea in silence while some football match played on the overhead TV screen. It wasn’t long before Khaled was done sitting next to a familiar face and got up to leave. He is not offended by this silence; in fact, nowadays, it makes perfectly good sense. With Khalid gone, he let his mind wander to things like food—although he was not hungry—to a thumb that was sore, even throbbing, and then to some radio that was playing a song that he used to know the name of, once. In the end, he whispered in what he thought was perfectly good English, “So good to see you, and how are you this fine day?” But then came that Tuesday morning in November. As he started for the front door, she, like always, said, “Good-bye, see you later and don’t be late for lunch.” “Okay, Taman.” But only moments later—her good-bye still an echo--his phone beeps, and although he does not recognize the number he answers it anyway, and it is Mrs. Kamel, the upstairs neighbor, and she is frantic, screeching, “She’s in the middle of the street and there is blood everywhere, and

Oh my God. Ya ‘allaaah”. Hurry before it is too late. Too late. Oh my God, too late.” Walking with her shopping bag, minding her own motherly business one minute and the very next flat on her face in the middle of Pharoah Street, lines of blood racing to the kerb. Many weeks later, even months, he is sitting on his bed, looking at his thumb that has not stopped aching, thinking that he no longer has to worry about mother not letting him go anywhere, but the very thought of it shames him because he should be thinking, feeling something else, anything else. And yet, thinking back to the school friends who had invited him to go with them to South America that summer and now he could, can, …. She is gone, and so there are no more barriers, nothing to hold him back. Meanwhile, more guilt comes rushing in. But there is that something else that refuses to go away: Mrs. Kamel, the neighbor, when she called him that day, screaming, begging him to hurry, how did she get his telephone number?

Introducing exclusive dinnerware collections: Laila & Jamila at Pottery Barn By bazaar Staff

If there is one thing we’re allowed to experience with pride during the holy month of Ramadan, it is how we welcome guests into our homes and share iftar and suhoor with loved ones, friends, and family. Whether your decorative flair is whimsical or traditional, Pottery Barn has created beautiful collections to delight you and your guests for the special season.

In Islamic Architecture, color holds significant symbolism, reflecting the values and beliefs of the faith. Four core colors, green, white, blue, and gold, are each used to convey various meanings. The Jamila (beauty) and Laila (night) collections feature these core colors. Green is associated with khidr or landscapes of greenery, and the color also represents the heavens. White is indicative of purity and cleanliness. Just as the fast first breaks with dates and laban, the JAMILA Palm Print collection features a simple green palm tree on a creamy bed of white ceramic. The Jamila salad plate is the perfect size to place atop the 27cm diameter dinner plate. With the appetizer plates set just to one side, and individual bowls 6.5cm deep at each diner’s place setting, a veritable Kaleidoscope of palm tree branches, geometric lines, and patterns emerge. The sizeable Jamila serving platter is designed to pass treats around a table. As fasting guests gather to feast on various delicious iftar offerings displayed on the generous platter, seasonal decorative motifs are revealed. The Jamila Collection is not only about iconic dinnerware. Beautiful linens with embroidery on 100% cotton feature date-laden palm trees, all in warm, sandy neutrals on napkins, table runners and table throws. The lush green on the painted stoneware stands out like a rich harvest against a natural landscape. The Jamila pieces are all cleverly designed to work together or as stand-alone items, no matter how simple or intricate your table will be this year. [Continued...]

Blue is often associated with contemplation and reflection. Gold can represent perfection and nobility. If a rich, elaborate, more formal style is right up your alley, contemplate the sublime LAILA Midnight Blue Collection. Perfectly mixed and matched patterns, hues of cerulean, turquoise, and indigo lay resplendent across linens, tableware, and soft furnishings. The table throw is made of 100% cotton with gold tassels that drip from each corner. The intricate white and gold floral design sits on a regal, base color of navy blue. The colors are reversed in the center panel square, where you can neatly set serving dishes with delicacies fresh from the oven. In the Laila collection, the design of the throw stands out from the runner, which features horizontally patched strips of pattern cleverly making the table runner so different that you should desire to acquire them both, adorning your Ramadan dining table with elegance. Enjoy an after-dinner hot beverage poured into a teacup with its mix-and-matched saucer, or a charming espresso mug placed next to the creamer and sugar set. All are edged in gold, with floral patterns evidence of inspiration taken from Moroccan tiles. Retire to the lounge and rest against pillows displaying the Laila collection reversible covers. No matter which collection takes your fancy be it Jamila or Laila, both work beautifully with accents of gold servewear. Appropriately named for the color, the TALA collection boasts an antique-inspired gold finish Date Tray. The TALA Date Tray is available in small or large sizes to suit your Ramadan gatherings. Goldencolored, stainless-steel serving spoons and the twisted five-hooped golden Tala Napkin Rings add depth to any tablescape, and you can even add some height with the 46cm tall Tala three-tiered stand for a beautifully bountiful display of delicacies to finish iftar.

It’s giving an even hotter version of Twilight (if Bella ended up choosing Jacob).

BATH & BODY WORKS RALLIES CUSTOMERS TO SHARE WHAT MAKES THEM FEEL LUMINOUS Celebrating largest-ever fragrance launch with Luminous By bazaar Staff

Radiant, rich, and luxurious are three words Bath & Body Works customers are using to describe its newest fragrance, Luminous, which officially launches in stores and online. According to a Bath & Body Works survey, 77% of consumers love getting complimented on the scent they wear, though 83% say they wear a fragrance for themselves rather than to impress others. So, for the launch of Luminous, the retailer is tapping into the power of fragrance and calling for customers to “share their shine” and show how this new fragrance makes them feel luminous from the inside out. 126

With a purpose to make the world a brighter, happier place through the power of fragrance, Bath & Body Works is encouraging customers to let their radiance shine with its ‘Share Your Shine’ campaign. By using #ShareYourShine and tagging @ bathandbodyworksarabia, customers can share how the fragrance makes them feel luminous. “Our customers view scent and fragrance as part of their identity, so by bringing an elevated yet accessible product to a passionate community, we have all the makings of a sharing and engagement campaign that celebrates our customers and is anchored in empowerment,” said Jamie Sohosky, Chief Marketing Officer at Bath & Body Works. As the newest addition to Bath & Body Works’ prestigious and extensive fine fragrance portfolio, Luminous was created to make every day and night feel like a special occasion. The renowned fragrance retailer, who collaborates with world-class perfumers, partnered with master perfumer, David Apel, to bring the inspiration to life through the creation of the fragrance. “For me, Luminous is a joyful celebration of modern femininity. The fragrance is brilliant and exquisitely nuanced with an air of addiction,” said David Apel, Senior Perfumer at Symrise. “The ingredients selected were very intentional — I wanted to give the fragrance a multidimensional signature with warmth, levity, elegance and most importantly, power and trail. Luminous moves with you and is a manifestation of what inspires you to live authentically and fully.” Luminous blends three luxe fragrance notes for a rich decadence, warmth, and sweetness. Ruby currant is a new and on-trend take on the dark red berry note; gilded iris is an in-demand luxurious ingredient; and praline amber provides a warm, gourmand note of the fragrance that leaves a lasting trail. As Bath & Body Works’ largest spring fragrance launch ever, Luminous is available in 20 products, including various forms the brand is known such as Eau de Parfum, Moisturizing Body Wash and Body Cream. The luxurious fragrance with on-trend, vanityworthy packaging is perfect for those starting their gift shopping or those looking to refresh their fragrance for the season. WHITE MEMORY

Exploring the notions of exodus and loss of homeland of the people of Palestine. By bazaar Staff

CAP Kuwait was proud to present White Memory, an exhibition of a series of monochrome portraits and an installation by Ghassan Hamada, exploring the notions of memory, absence, exodus, and loss of homeland. The main body of White Memory was using the medium of photography as an approach to tell stories of absence from homeland. Each of the image is attempting to capture the essence of the written story sharing its page. In their longer form, the series of photos were telling a larger story. These photographs were capturing and freezing a moment in time whilst conveying an emotion, expressing a mood, sharing an idea, and telling a narrative. All key elements in storytelling of the forced exodus of peoples from Palestine.

Hamada has a long-standing passion towards black and white photography, not merely for the absence of colour; the monochrome pictures in the exhibition were artistically blending shapes and tones to help us see the life of the Palestinian refugees more clearly. Black and white photos are truthful even though the world is in colour. The feeling is that the artist has stripped away all the distractions and left us with the essence of a subject. Because there is less in these monochrome images, there’s more emphasis on what remains. In many ways, black and white is the essence of photography. The artist is attempting to help us see the lives of these people more clearly. 130

All photos presented in White Memory are captured on film. The artist has a strong belief that film does teach him to be intentional, not only with his subject but with his content; and with what he is creating. This is particularly interesting and important when creating content as artwork and for the audiences they want to engage. There is an emotional connection between him, his work and the audience. Film has the ability to create an equal bond. Only film has the ability to capture pure and raw emotion. You can hear the story of each person photographed, their first years were not absent from their memory, as they still remember all the details of their birth and their first education, Palestine. The long years of absence and the great suffering of the Palestinians since the forced exodus from their country did not distort their fresh memories. These oral histories are an important adjunct to the photo essay Hamada had - to capture a way of life and the experience that these Palestinian refugees were passing. In a way, the oral histories

are deepening, adding and giving context to the photographs. Palestinians are talking about their time before, during and after the exodus. With the photographs, we have a still representation and what the oral history interview adds is someone saying, ‘that’s what my life was like then’ and giving further detail comparing to life now. That adds quite a lot to it. Part of the exhibition is an installation produced by the artist using replicas of original key of a lost home in Palestine. Keys are the symbol of the Palestinian “Nakba” – the “disaster” - the final, fateful, terrible last turning in the lock of those front doors as 750,000 Arab men, women and children fled or were thrown out of their homes in what was to become the state of Israel in 1947 and 1948. A White Memory ... It may be the last testimonies of the first stories of the memory of absence from the homeland. It may seem confusing to some, but it appears as a beautiful dream that they have every night, telling them the hope of a soon return.

Ghassan Hamada A self-taught Jordanian artist of Palestinian origin, born in Kuwait in 1968. He is a multidisciplinary artist, with practice in calligraphy, painting, film and graphic design. A strong believer in experimentation as a process for creativity paving the path for participating in competitions and winning numerous awards. The Arabic letter captivates him with its curves and overlapping lines. Sometimes he says that the rules of this calligraphy were laid in the sky, so no human being can achieve such perfection. 131
