We are so delighted to bring you the VESTA issue! The Vesta Home Show is named for the Roman goddess of the house and home, and this year’s edition, like many in the past, is truly a display of majestic works of art. Each year I am amazed by the attention to detail and clever ideas the architects, builders and designers bring to life and this year is no exception. I hope the sneak peek of the five VESTA houses will intrigue you to come out and see these beautiful family homes in person in November, which is only a month away!

Summer has come to an end and fall is here, but our family had to sneak in our first beach vacation with grandchildren recently. We were blessed to have annual beach trips with our kids when they were growing up so it is something I have looked forward to for a long time. There is nothing quite like a baby on the beach. Our grandson, Miles, was his sweet, not so little, chilled self and his beach giggles and pool splashing will forever make me smile. Granddaughter Crawford truly showed us what a beach baby she is. Her fearless spirit is one I can’t wait to watch grow and we look forward to making memories with our Crawford, Miles and hopefully more to come. I just might have to start a GoFundMe for Sugar Shack tee shirts—I hope they wear the $76 sticker shockers out!

In closing, I would like to say how honored I am to be able to feature a small tribute this month to Judy and Mickey McClellan and their team. Judy and Mickey started off as clients and our relationship quickly grew to one of the best friendships for life. We have laughed, cried, mourned and celebrated together. While Trip and Mickey refer to each other as our “mud flaps,” Judy and I refer to each other as sisters. I call her my older sister because she is who I strive to be one day, not for the successful business she has created, but for who she is. Judy is one of the most beautiful people, both inside and out, I have had the honor of knowing. Her loyal, honest and humble heart sets her apart. Trip and I are so thankful God put Judy and Mickey in our lives and we are proud to call them friends.

Wishing you all a safe and happy fall!

the term “home renovation” can be relative. It can cover a spectrum of projects, from freshening paint to adding new furniture to reworking the floor plan. The job designer Selena McAdams took on recently, however, reached much farther. Her clients tasked McAdams with transforming a 1980s-era Germantown house to give it the cool minimalist ambience they love.

It wasn’t just that the couple liked the design style. They wanted to replicate the feel of the home they’d moved from—a

mid-century-style house in Eads with a wall of windows and a streamlined design that suited their aesthetic to a tee.

They loved everything about it, except the rural location. With two elementaryage children, the family sought to simplify their lifestyle by moving a little farther “in,” closer to activities and extended family. They landed in a quiet cove in Germantown where the kids now walk or ride bikes to school, accompanied by a group of neighborhood friends.

shortlybefore moving in, the homeowners decided to update the small primary bathroom. It wasn’t long before the plan had grown to include a kitchen renovation. Once the scope of the project had grown that large it made sense to go ahead and rework the entire downstairs of the 1.5-story house at once. That plan gave McAdams, who had also collaborated with the couple on their previous home, the ideal opportunity to create a design that flows effortlessly throughout the entire space.

She came on board early in the process, along with architect David Anderson, who transformed the downstairs floor plan, opening up walls here and adding walls there to better suit the family’s lifestyle.

One of the homeowners’ favorite features of the house’s layout was that the front door didn’t open directly to a stairway, as is the style of many suburban houses from the same era. Anderson took the idea a step further, adding a textured wall to the entryway that blocks the line of sight into the rest of the home and provides an element of privacy.

McAdams styled the space with a striking contemporary portrait by local artist Leslie Barron hanging over a sleek and simple black lucite console. An ottoman upholstered in green geometric velvet adds texture and verve.

Just alongside, the home’s original living room is now a convenient homework/reading spot for the children. Well lit thanks to a full-length window as well as the striking Suzanne Kasler light fixture, the space holds the essentials: a round pedestal table and a pair of curved leather armchairs with a mod silhouette.

McAdams continued the curved lines in her choices for the adjacent dining room, where she paired an oval table with a set of Danish modern Panton-style chairs in vibrant orange. She credits her long-standing relationship with the clients for helping them agree to her bold seating idea. “I had to ask them, ‘Will you trust me on this?’ And they did.” Completing the dining room design is a striking deer painting by Oxford, MS, artist Bradley Gordon.

The juxtaposition of styles is a design concept McAdams says she loves to incorporate in her work. “That’s where I like to have the most fun: playing with traditional versus contemporary and masculine versus feminine elements in a space. That intentional play can really pull a room together and make it a space that everyone loves”.

thekitchen’s sleek nature proves that modern elegance doesn’t preclude practicality. Anderson provided a roomy, open footprint as the blank slate for McAdams to work. High-gloss white IKEA base cabinets line one wall, topped with simple white quartz countertops. The designer encouraged the client to forgo upper cabinets and the result is stunning. Brass sconces illuminate the wall, highlighting framed art. A nearby wall of floor-to-ceiling cabinets provides plenty of storage. The large island is a show stopper with its waterfall-edge in leathered fantasy brown marble. To keep the look streamlined, the homeowner opted for a smooth induction cooktop and a pair of single ovens nestled in the island.

The kitchen opens to the family room, another area where Anderson worked renovation magic to transform the look and feel. Says the homeowner, “When you’re looking at what you see now, if there was a wall, there’s not a wall. If there’s not a wall, there used to be one.” While Anderson’s plan opened substantially the flow into the room, it also added a wall over the formerly exposed staircase. The alteration served two purposes, according to McAdams: to hide the stairs, creating a cleaner design, and to establish a media wall. The family brought the root-and-glass

coffee table and the pair of woven chairs from their previous home, while the rest of the furnishings were sourced from spruce, McAdams’s East Memphis shop.

A sliding door can close to allow the solarium behind the living room to become a cozy and private haven. The comfy sectional decked out in plaid wool and the padded leather ottoman give the space a manly aesthetic, punched up by the mid-century influenced wooden floor lamp and chair. The designer added her signature contrast in an understated antelope print rug and an olive upholstered chair that gives a stylistic nod to the iconic midcentury Eames lounger.

The owners’ suite, a guest bedroom and a hall bath complete the downstairs, and McAdams says she was thrilled to design all those areas in addition to the public spaces of the home.

“They did everything at once which was so fantastic from a design standpoint. We were able to layer all the rooms’ design concepts in relation to each other and make the design connect in one moment versus over years. Ultimately, the finish line was extremely rewarding.”

inthe interest of design continuity and simplicity, both bathrooms are fairly similar, with custom walnut vanities, classic white tile and unlacquered brass hardware. The primary bedroom exudes the glamor of old Hollywood. “It all started with the bed,” says McAdams, and while its style is pure sophistication, the process of acquiring it was anything but smooth. The company that manufactured the upholstered frame was bought out. “I think this was the last order they took,” she recalls with a laugh. When the bed arrived, there were the headboard and footboard, but the matching side rails were missing. “We had to go back to a company that had been bought out and ask them to find the rails in their warehouse. They had been produced, they just hadn’t shipped them.” The stray pieces finally came, and the finished product now forms the base for the room’s luxe vibe. Classic symmetry makes an appearance in the matching bedside chests, crystal lamps and round mirrors. A low sofa in dusty pink completes the design and gives the couple a soft and stylish spot to watch TV, read or relax.

“We just wanted to have fun with the guest room,” says McAdams. She and her client were able to finalize the choices for the room in a single, quick meeting, thanks to their great working relationship. “Besides the wall covering in the dining room we hadn’t done wallpaper anywhere. This Kelly Wearstler pattern was a perfect starting point. And I knew we had to do this large lumbar pillow as an accent. I love how it feels organic, a little edgy and still retains a mid century feel.”

Now that the transformation is complete, McAdams says the relationship she and these clients have developed over time made all the difference. “Having worked with them before, they’ve trusted the whole process. I’m very lucky to have clients who trust me with a vision and allow me the flexibility of taking them down that design path.”

"JUDY AND HER TEAM ARE MODELS FOR THE INDUSTRY. SHE HAS AN INCREDIBLE WORK ETHIC, STERLING ETHICS AND IS AT THE TOP OF HER GAME. SHE AND HER TEAM ARE HIGHLY RESPECTED, NOT JUST BY ME OR HAROLD CRYE, BUT BY THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY. WE ARE VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE HAD THEM IN THE CRYE-LEIKE FAMILY FOR 36 YEARS.”

40 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • October 2022 JUDY MCLELLAN CELEBRATES 36 YEARS WITH CRYE-LEIKE REALTORS SPECIAL SPOTLIGHT

when someone marks 36 years with a company, it’s cause to celebrate. Even more so when that someone has been (and continues to be) a game changer not only in their company, but in an entire industry. This year is Judy McLellan’s 36th anniversary with Crye-Leike Realtors. At Home Memphis & Mid South sat down with the inimitable JudyMac and her husband and business partner Mickey McLellan to chat about inspiration, memories, keys to their phenomenal success, and more.

AHMMS : What initially prompted you to go into the real estate business?

JudyMac: My mother was a realtor so I followed right behind her. My dad did the infrastructure for subdivisions. This is the only job I’ve ever had. My mother was my mentor; she was in Memphis real estate for 30 years and was one of nine women who made the million dollar sales club at inception. That was unheard of because it was a business dominated by men. She was probably the greatest teacher without even trying to be, because she loved people regardless. One of the most important things she taught me was always do your business with your heart.

I’ve been in the business over 40 years now. Initially I worked for a

couple of small firms. Then I made the best move and the final move to CryeLeike and we’ve been totally happy.

AHMMS: How about you, Mickey? When did you come on board?

Mickey: I got my license shortly after we got married so I could help her on weekends, at open houses and so on. It gave me more insight into what she did. At the time I was director of sales for Bellsouth Mobility. My next move in the corporation was going to have to be out of Memphis. Judy’s business was really starting to take off so I decided to make the change.

AHMMS : Judy has been a trailblazer in Memphis real estate for decades. What are some things that helped get you started down the road to success?

Mickey: We’ve always prided ourselves on being early adopters of whatever the new technology was. We were one of the first realtors to have a laptop instead of the old MLS book. Another big pivotal thing that we started back in 1988 was a comprehensive marketing program, a whole suite with a personalized logo and slogan—Always in Tune to Your Real Estate Needs. People around Memphis knew Judy and her family were great singers. No other local agents did this at the time. That was one of the biggest things that we think helped propel her business.

AHMMS : Over the years Judy’s operation has grown from that of a solo agent into a partnership with Mickey to an entire team. What makes

the well-oiled machine that is the JudyMac Team work?

JudyMac: We have really, really good people. Our buyer’s agent and listing coordinator, Tina Sidebottom, has been with us 13 years. Our office manager and closing coordinator, Neely Thrasher, is the detail person and keeps me organized behind the scenes. It's wonderful because it gives me a sense of freedom so that I can go out and be with people and not be burdened down with all the stuff that I know has to be taken care of. She's so competent that we know that she can do it. Our third team member is our social media coordinator, David Rahaim. He's extremely creative and he really is right on target.

AHMMS : What core principles drive you?

JudyMac: Always, always do the right thing.

Mickey: We all work hard and our goal is to excel in everything we do. We aim for 100% customer satisfaction. Because Judy works so hard and really loves her clients, our slogan is “Hustle and Heart Set Us Apart.”

AHMMS : Any plans to slow down? JudyMac: No. I get so much satisfaction in helping people get where they need to be. I love to take care of people. Yeah, when they give me the green light, I run.

“MICKEY AND JUDY ARE SUPERSTAR SALES AGENTS, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY THEY ARE HIGHQUALITY PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS. CRYE-LEIKE HAS BEEN HONORED TO HAVE THEM AS GREAT SALES ASSOCIATES, BUT ALSO AS FRIENDS FOR 30 PLUS YEARS. WE NEVER HEAR COMPLAINTS, ONLY COMPLIMENTS ABOUT THE JUDYMAC TEAM. EVERY BROKER’S DREAM AGENTS!”

Art Haus

383 Bubby Drive Collierville, TN 38017

John Duke Homes has worked in close collaboration with Murphy Maude Interiors to create the “Art Haus.” The goal in the design was to incorporate elements derived from local artists in each room. The style is transitional with a bit of an edge. Special features include a custom-made brass vent hood that acts as a centerpiece for the kitchen, along with custom-made wallpaper designed by and available through Murphy Maude. The detailed tile work in each bathroom, along with each light fixture chosen, is a nod to the symbiotic relationship between form and function, embracing beautiful craftsmanship and a bit of whimsy.

The primary bedroom truly feels like a sanctuary with Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black

paint covering the walls, trim and ceiling, and three spectacular pendants hanging above the canopy bed. Each of the other three bedrooms features a different Murphy Maude wallpaper. The collaboration between Miestro audio/visual company and the designers resulted in a bonus room that will surely be the favorite hang-out spot! Mood lighting with color-changing LED lights in the ceiling offers endless options for illumination, while four different gaming screens and an integrated entertainment system throughout the home are sure to please every member of the family.

From plans to furnishings and everything in between, the design team worked together with a goal of staying true and consistent to the edgy and artsy style that creates a fun, beautiful and exciting home for modern living.

Ellison Glen

Drawing inspiration from the likes of A. Hays Town’s Louisiana architecture, we present to you Ellison Glen. The draw of a classic Acadian cottage with iron French doors, oversized timber details and Creole-influenced full-length shutters achieves a confluence of seemingly disparate yet elegantly balanced themes and forms. Other Town trademarks include the use of brick floors and interior embellishments as well as the heavy use of wood inside the home.

This home combines all these classic details combined with today’s modern amenities. With four bedrooms and three and a half baths, there is comfortable space

for the entire family. The primary and guest suites are on the first floor while the other two bedrooms encompass a gathering room on the second floor. The home features stateof-the-art smart appliances, security and a smart home technology system designed to support the full spectrum of home automation products and solutions. The interior design by B. Gaines Interior Design presents layers of comfort with familiar textures, wood details and classic fixtures in charming combinations throughout, blending old and new for a timeless respite. At just over 4,500 square feet of heated space, this innovative home, conceived by Conway Design Group, is proudly presented as our 2022 Vesta Home Show entry.

The word Genesis means “the formation of something.” That is exactly what this year’s Vesta home is for DKH builder Darin Halford. While most homes are either traditional or modern in the way they look and feel, this home is transitional, with both classic and contemporary elements that allow the homeowner to pull one style to the forefront or keep the perfect union of both. A timeless brick beauty, it is distinguishable by a clean, yet edgy parapet wall and custom iron and glass entry doors that softly hint at its modern accents.

The five-bedroom, nearly 4,000 squarefoot plan has a feel with which the welltraveled homeowner will connect. The multiple tones of wood that wrap the interior

are soothing and warm. Designer Meredith Fernandez intentionally used a neutral palette with generous pops of green to create an authentic, global style. The custom-built cabinets and hood are a real treat for those with a discriminating eye for high-quality design. The inviting friends’ entry and indoor/ outdoor fireplaces encourage the undeniable casual-yet-contemporary feel of The Genesis.

Visitors will enjoy a heartfelt tribute to local music and artists this year with a dedicated music room and pieces from Where is Frances, Dorothy Art, Nate Renner and Katie Toombs. Be sure to stop by The Genesis to see the formation of something new—a blended mix of architecture and design that evokes an urge for reverence while making you want to take your shoes off and stay a while.

FALL INTO THE HOLIDAYS IN CORINTH

EXPERIENCE THIS

AS THE WEATHER turns cooler and the air smells of tailgates and campfires, some things just get better. Cookouts, hot coffee, evenings outdoors… and Corinth, Mississippi. The city, normally celebrated for its historically strategic location at the crossroads, turns into a day or weekend destination in the cooler months, and it’s not just for the history!

From luminaries to twinkling skylines, the holidays are a magical time in Corinth, and the community takes its responsibility as a holiday destination seriously. A storybook-worthy Fall Festival on Oct. 29 will entertain the whole family with a Witch’s Ride, bouncers, a movie, food trucks and lots of candy. Taking place on the grounds of the newly renovated Trailhead Yard, the event will surely mark the beginning of a new fall tradition.

The next weekend, on Nov. 5, a locally legendary event returns to help commemorate the 160th anniversary of the battle of Corinth. The Grand Illumination will showcase Corinth’s historic grounds with 12,000 luminaries honoring those who fell in the battle, and downtown merchants will host open houses, special sales and extended hours to welcome the oncoming shopping season. The Corinth Coliseum will host live entertainment, and 15,000 globe lights will dot the rooftops in this community-wide holiday kickoff.

EXPERIENCE THIS

AS THE SHOPPING season continues, the CARE garden on the grounds of the historic Corinth Depot will host the celebrated Red Green Market on Nov. 19. This oncea-year holiday market offers locally created arts, crafts and unique gifts; it’s the perfect place to finish checking off all the names on your list. From baked goods to handmade jewelry to locally crafted candles, you’ll find something perfect for everyone.

December will find the thespians of Corinth Theatre-Arts performing the classic A Christmas Story (Dec. 1-4 and 9-11), and the 2022 installment of the annual Corinth Christmas Parade on Sat., Dec. 3. The parade will culminate in the lighting of the 28-foot-tall Christmas tree on the steps of the Corinth Courthouse, with a visit from Santa to close out the evening. The next day, Sun., Dec. 4, the Corinth Symphony Orchestra will present A Classic Christmas Spectacular at the historic downtown Coliseum. The Corinth Ballet will bring its holiday tradition, The Nutcracker , to the Coliseum stage Dec. 8-11 to ensure every last ounce of holiday cheer is shared with citizens and visitors alike.

As the leaves fall, the temperatures cool and the calendar fills with “mustdo” day trips, Corinth is waiting with so much more than meets the eye. Spend some time in the community and see for yourself—it truly is easy to #enjoycorinth!

COSMETIC DENTISTRY FOR HEALTH AND LONGEVITY

Our smiles are more than just a feature of our faces. Smiles can make a huge difference in how we feel about ourselves. Research shows that an attractive smile can boost job and social prospects and self-confidence.

With the recent advancements in cosmetic dentistry, it's easier than ever to improve the appearance of your smile! Not only can this make you feel better about yourself, but it can also result in healthier teeth and gums.

IS COSMETIC DENTISTRY RIGHT FOR ME?

Cosmetic dentistry is a unique blend of form and function. In many cases, cosmetic dentistry is performed to restore damaged, discolored or crowded teeth to their optimal functionality, appearance and health.

Cosmetic dentistry can help patients through several common techniques. Whiter teeth can be achieved through custom take-home kits or in-office Zoom whitening. For straighter teeth, Invisalign is a great resource to get the look you want without the hassle of traditional braces.

For many patients, veneers can be an excellent option to greatly improve their smile’s appearance quickly. Typically, veneers can be completed in only two to three visits.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT COSMETIC DENTISTRY

Many patients have misconceptions about the cost and scope of the procedures used in cosmetic dentistry. You may be surprised that cosmetic procedures such as whitening can be very affordable. If you’re interested in improving your smile through cosmetic procedures, please contact any of our convenient area locations in Germantown, East Memphis and Bartlett for more information on creating a treatment plan customized to your individual needs.

GETTING HEALTHY IN AN UNHEALTHY WORLD

Imagine you are driving down the interstate one bright, sunny day when suddenly your check engine light comes on and your car begins to slow. Once on the shoulder, you remember that your car was due for an oil change about 20,000 miles ago. Additionally, you realize that you have replaced the premium fuel that your car owner’s manual suggested with cheaper, regular fuel. You also ignored the recommended 60,000-mile service.

Obviously, this is an over exaggeration—you would never ignore servicing your vehicle. Nor would you put improper fuel in its tank. Many of us do, however, ignore the daily signs that our most important vehicle, our body, is not running properly.

With fast food restaurants on almost every corner and increased stressors of daily life, it is no wonder that Americans have seen the size of their waistlines greatly increase over the last decade. In fact, according to the CDC, a whopping 73.6% of Americans ages 20 and over are overweight or obese. This increases their risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, cancer and premature death. Americans dine out more than ever before. We spend less time around the family dinner table and more time going through drive-thrus or sitting at restaurants; more hours sitting in front of screens and fewer hours outside. Unfortunately, all these factors have served to the detriment of our health.

How can we stay healthy while living in this unhealthy world?

1. Decide to make a lifestyle change. Take the word “diet” out of the equation. Fad diets inevitably fail and old habits creep back.

Real change occurs when your daily habits change permanently.

2. Set a goal to make one small change a week.

A good goal may be to increase water intake and eliminate soft drinks or replace prepackaged foods with fresh veggies and healthy protein. By adding a new habit each week, you will begin to see changes in the way you look and feel without being overwhelmed.

3. Get outside in the fresh air and sunshine.

Walk outdoors for at least 20 minutes every day. This habit is good for your mind as well as your body!

4. Fuel your body properly.

Seek guidance from a trusted health-care professional if you are unsure which foods are best for you to eat to make positive changes. Having a simple meal plan to get you on track makes the transition to healthy eating easier.

5. Get a tune-up!

Do you know your body fat percentage? What is your Vitamin D level? Thyroid functioning optimally? Do you have chronic inflammation in your body? Are your hormones balanced? These are all important factors to know before starting your overall health and weight modification. Receiving answers to these questions from a physician who specializes in obesity medicine is a good place to start. Obesity medicine board certification equips doctors to help you implement evidence-based strategies for losing weight and keeping it off.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PREVENTIVE AND CORRECTIVE DENTAL CARE

When it comes to oral hygiene, most adults overlook the importance of both preventive and corrective dental care. Of course, we’re taught as children to brush and floss daily, but these practices affect much more than just the brightness of your smile. Your oral health directly impacts your overall well-being — in fact, a tooth infection can literally be lifethreatening! Because of this strong oral-systemic connection, it’s crucial to understand the positive impact preventive and corrective dental care has on your overall health.

PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

Did you know that only about 58% of Americans visit their dentist regularly? This means that almost half of the population skips their annual dental visit! In order to fully reap the benefits of preventative dentistry, you need to be visiting your dentist twice a year for exams and cleanings. Routine visits allow your oral physician to check for and treat emerging oral issues before they become a bigger problem.

Along with a thorough oral exam, there are a few other preventive practices that your dentist may want to implement during your visit. Regular cleanings, sealants and fluoride applications are all popular treatments that help prevent bacteria build-up, tooth decay, gum disease and other oral complications that can lead to more serious health issues down the road. X-rays are another diagnostic aid that can help your dentist analyze the condition of your teeth and easily spot potential problem areas

that are not visible within a clinical exam. With all of these options in your oral hygiene arsenal, you’ll be able to keep your mouth healthy and happy for years to come!

CORRECTIVE DENTISTRY

If you haven’t been practicing preventive dental care, don’t give up on your smile — corrective dentistry is another great option for improving your oral health. Veneers, while mainly known for upgrading the cosmetic aspect of your smile, actually provide several dental health benefits! These coverings can provide protection for and help you maintain your existing teeth, reduce tooth sensitivity, enhance oral function, and even improve your bite.

Not only are veneers beneficial for your oral and systemic health, but they improve the appearance of your smile and can help boost your confidence. If your teeth are discolored, worn down, chipped or misaligned, these coverings will straighten and brighten the overall look of your smile in a natural-looking way.

No matter your past history with dental care, veneers give you a fresh start and a stunning smile that will last!

It’s never too early or too late to improve your oral health — with preventive and corrective dentistry at your fingertips, you can take control of your smile. Contact our dental experts at Memphis Center for Family and Cosmetic Dentistry to learn more about dental care or to be seen by Dr. Miles Moore.

ADVANCED TECHNIQUES AND SPECIALIZED SURGEONS ARE KEY FOR NATURAL-LOOKING COSMETIC SURGICAL RESULTS

In the past many people feared cosmetic surgery because of concerns with anesthesia, pain, costs or an unnaturallooking result. However, with the rise of new techniques and sub-specialization, natural-looking results in a cost-effective and comfortable environment are easier than ever to obtain.

Surgical specialists well versed in the newest techniques provide the best results. Dr. Phillip R. Langsdon specializes in the face and nose. His partner Dr. Roberto Lachica specializes in breast and body contouring procedures. Carol Langsdon, RNP, specializes in Botox® and facial fillers.

PLASTIC SURGERY AND RESHAPING THE BODY

Whether it’s pregnancy, breast feeding, weight loss, gravity or age, the result is the same; changes are bound to occur in the shape of breasts and tummy. Although these changes may be permanent, natural-appearing restoration of shape can be achieved with the right surgical procedures.

Breasts: New smooth silicone gel breast implants have a natural feel and appearance and are both safe and longlasting. By combining these implants with a lifting and positioning technique simultaneously, a procedure called “augment plus lift” can provide ideal results. This is the most complex breast reshaping and requires the highest level of knowledge, experience, judgment and skill—traits only possessed by a surgeon who specializes in the procedure, not a “jack of all trades” who performs any and all types of surgery.

Tummy: A sagging tummy may be treated while also treating excess fat in the “love handles,” back or “saddlebags.” These changes are circumferential (360˚) and may be obvious in swimwear or form-fitting clothes.

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and simultaneous liposuction can result in a tighter, flatter, smoother tummy area and an enhanced three-dimensional lower-body silhouette that is visible from the front and the back.

Dr. Roberto Lachica of The Langsdon Clinic specializes in breast and body contouring surgery, using the newest and best combined techniques. He is known for outstanding outcomes.

PLASTIC SURGERY OF THE FACE

Facelift surgery can be a life-enhancing procedure that can help both men and women regain a more youthful appearance.

People may fear they will end up with a stretched or windblown look. It does not have to be that way, however.

Today’s options include several different kinds of facelifts. It is important to note that different levels of specialized expertise also exist among surgeons providing the procedures.

A relatively new development is the deep plane facelift, a technique that reverses signs of aging by repositioning muscle first. “Rather than just pulling on the skin or elevating the fascial layer a little bit, a deep plane facelift goes beneath and lifts the entire muscle sheet that runs from the upper cheek to the mid-cheek, jowls, the entire jawline and the upper neck,” says Dr. Langsdon. “It lifts the overlying skin in a naturallooking manner.”

Unlike other types of facelifts, a deep plane lift does not simply stretch the skin like a skin pull lift. It is done at the Langsdon Clinic’s certified private outpatient surgical facility under IV sedation that is usually pleasant and easier to tolerate, much like the type of anesthesia used during a colonoscopy.

Dr. Langsdon of The Langsdon Clinic in Memphis is one among a very small group of highly experienced surgeons across the U.S. who perform this procedure on a regular basis. The result is a simple, effective and natural-looking solution to sagging and bagging of the aging face.

NON-SURGICAL AESTHETICS

While many places today offer Botox® or facial fillers, The Langsdon Clinic and their experienced staff use state-of-theart techniques for both surgical and non-surgical procedures.

Carol Langsdon, RNP, is responsible for nursing aesthetics including Botox®, facial fillers, skin treatment, peels and other non-surgical treatments. She designed and oversees a custom TCA skin-peeling program that rivals most laser and light-based skin improvement tools. She participated in the early clinical trials for an injectable facial filler. Most importantly, Carol is not only the best at what she does, she will not push patients to purchase products or have injectable treatments. She only provides what the patient needs and what has the best chance to be beneficial, and she goes beyond expectations in providing natural results in the most comfortable way found anywhere.

Dr. Langsdon is a pioneer in facial plastic surgery. He developed techniques which revolutionized contouring improvements in saggy necks and nasal deformities. His techniques have been adopted by many other leading facelift surgeons throughout the world. He has been recognized for his work in the Commercial Appeal, Memphis Magazine, Castle Conolly, America’s Top Doctors, Delta Sky Magazine, and the Consumer’s Research Council of America’s Best Plastic Surgeons

Dr. Langsdon served as 2018-2019 president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.

Roberto D. Lachica, M.D., is an aesthetic plastic surgeon in his 24th year of practice. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He has been recognized for his work and reputation by Memphis Magazine, Memphis Health and Fitness Magazine, and Castle Conolly (America’s Best Plastic Surgeons).

Carol Langsdon, RNP, is an expert nurse injector. She has over 30 years of experience in facial aesthetics. Her results are as natural-looking as one can find, and she goes beyond what is usually seen in clinics and spas to make her treatments as comfortable and natural-looking as possible.

The Langsdon Clinic provides a fullservice, state-licensed outpatient facility on site, where patients receive the highest quality care from an extremely knowledgeable team. Staff members are ready to address both standard and complicated cases. Known as one of the top facial aesthetic surgery clinics in the United States, The Langsdon Clinic now offers national-level expertise in breast and body procedures in a safe, cost-effective clinic and surgical facility.

HARBORCHASE: A SURPRISINGLY VIBRANT AND ECLECTIC DINING DESTINATION

Ask friends and family if they would expect to enjoy gourmet dinners or handcrafted artisanal sandwiches and cocktails on the menu at a senior living community, and they would likely respond “no.” People’s perceptions of senior living dining were shaped in years past. But, as they say, the times are changing, and it could not happen fast enough for today’s aging boomer generation. They know what they like, want the freedom to make choices, and enjoy breaking bread with friends and family any time of the day.

Memphis has delicious dining options and HarborChase of Cordova can be added to the list of destination restaurants worth the visit. More like those found in a luxury resort than a senior living community, the restaurants at HarborChase of Cordova are a particular point of pride for residents, associates and visiting professionals. The community’s five on-site restaurants – Signatures, Counter-Offer Café, Fusion Lounge, The Chef’s Studio and The Grill Room – provide culinary options ranging from gourmet, five-course dinners to casual, grab-and-go fare.

At The Chef’s Studio, professionally trained chefs showcase their culinary talents through live demonstrations and special tastings, while The Grill Room provides an intimate, reservation-only weekend dining experience featuring land, sea and air entrees. Counter-Offer is a delightful cafe near the main entrance offering artisanal sandwiches, handcrafted salads, pastries and a variety of beverages, coffees and snacks. For residents who prefer something less formal than the traditional three-course meal in Signatures, the cafe is ideal. Counter-Offer is also a convenient spot for professionals and families who frequent the community to find fresh, fast meals, as well as an ideal meeting space. In the heart of the community is Fusion

Lounge, a full-service bar. Daily happy hours include appetizers like the famous HarborChase crab cakes and charcuterie board, live music, and the occasional Smartini trivia game. It is surprisingly vibrant and welcoming.

If you like delicious meal varieties, new culinary experiences, warm hospitality and excellent service, pay a visit to one of HarborChase of Cordova’s restaurants, located at 1600 Appling Road.

YOUR BEST ACCESSORY IS YOUR SMILE

No, REALLY! The first thing that people notice about you is your smile. A bright, beautiful smile draws people in. Because of this, being confident in your smile can elevate your personal and professional goals. It has been scientifically proven that smiling makes you happier. It is important to partner with an experienced cosmetic dentist who can create and maintain your beautiful smile.

means to straighten teeth now. Invisalign®, which straightens teeth over time using invisible clear plastic trays, is by far the best clear aligner available.

The best and longest lasting way to create a beautiful smile is by custommade porcelain veneers. Veneers are an extremely conservative way to elevate your smile, make you look younger, and make you the best version of yourself. Beautiful, natural veneers are custom made by a master ceramist at an exclusive cosmetic dental lab to which not all dentists have access. Artistry and engineering come together to create a perfect smile. Veneers are bonded to your teeth and with good maintenance they can last forever!

Do your teeth have tiny chips or cracks in them? Cosmetic bondings are a great option for very minor wear and tear. Bonding is extremely conservative and can look very natural.

What if I like my teeth, but would rather they were straighter? There are excellent, conservative and cosmetic

Happy with your teeth but not happy with their color? Whitening is a good answer. Teeth whitening has been around for some time now. It is true that some teeth whiten better than others. It is also true that as we age, whitening becomes less and less effective. One benefit of porcelain veneers as opposed to whitening is that they should never discolor or stain.

The most beautiful smiles also happen to be the healthiest! In general, biannual cleanings and exams are an excellent way to maintain a beautiful smile. Dr. Vick and his team of hygienists partner with their patients to ensure that a beautiful smile lasts a lifetime.

crime has risen to an all-time high across the country. The Mid South is feeling the impact of the rise in violent crime such as rape, murder, aggravated assault and robbery. Included in these numbers are carjackings and home invasions; carjackings in particular are up as high at 45 percent in major cities. These numbers are alarming as our personal safety has never been more at risk of violation.

Women are at a higher risk of being victims of a violent crime than men. Statistics show that one in three women will be a victim of a violent crime at some point in her lifetime. Women are also more likely to experience verbal and sexual harassment assault.

You are only as safe in your home as the community in which you live is safe. Safety includes being able to walk the streets of your community without fear of being attacked, violently or otherwise.

HOW SAFE IS YOUR COMMUNITY?

I did a quick search on the crime index of some of the Mid South’s largest cities. The NeighborhoodScout crime index ranks communities on an index scale of 0 to 100, with 100 being the best score. The closer your community is to 100 the safer it is to live, work and play. If your community scores a 60, for example, it means it is 60 percent safer than average U.S. cities.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO KEEP YOURSELF SAFE AT HOME AND IN YOUR COMMUNITY?

In the event of a threat, you are most likely to experience panic and fear along with an adrenaline rush. Tunnel vision, loss of hearing and loss of fine motor skills are common during times of panic and fear. The best strategy is to avoid the attack to the best of your ability and to create distance between you and your attacker.

1. Take self-defense classes regularly. Self-defense classes teach methods of escaping an attack. As opposed to combative classes that teach techniques for winning a fight, self-defense teaches techniques for getting away from an attacker and creating space between you and the attacker so that you can get to safety. Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Krav Maga are two of the best-known self-defense programs in the world.

Attending one seminar once a year is not likely to help you in the event of a real-life event. To be prepared in the event of a threat or attack you need to take part in at least one class a week to develop mental and physical reflexes and skills.

2. Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it isn’t right. Women often minimize a threat with self-talk that includes, “I am being paranoid,” “I am overreacting,” “I am not being polite,” etc.

Along the way of life, people develop reasoning skills and start to allow the rational part of the brain to override instinctual radar. IF IT DOESN'T FEEL RIGHT, IT ISN’T!! You have the right to make a decision based on how you feel. You do not need facts to support your feelings.

3. Practice safe distance. Everyone has a personal space zone. Creepy people know when they are entering that zone. It is not your place to accommodate someone who makes you feel uncomfortable. In the South, we tend to think it is impolite to speak up or move away from situations that make us uncomfortable. If someone enters your personal space without permission, they are in violation of your space and you should take necessary steps to remedy the situation.

If you are out on a walk or run and you notice a parked car ahead of you that makes you feel uncomfortable, turn around and go the opposite direction. Call 911 as you are making a change in direction. Get out your pepper spray and have it ready to use.

Shout loudly for the person entering your space to “stay back” to let others around you know you are being threatened. Continue shouting until they move out and away from your space. If you have told them to stay back and they continue to approach you, spray them with pepper spray, then jump to the side and away from them to confuse them about your location. Call 911 or shout for someone nearby to call 911.

4. Take a non-lethal weapon self-defense class that teaches how to use pepper spray and a baton. Batons are illegal weapons in most states unless you have a permit to carry. Mississippi and Tennessee both require a permit to carry a baton. They are effective self-defense tools and knowing how to use them effectively is an important skill. I took a class at Top Gun in Memphis.

*If you are going to carry a gun, please take gun safety classes. They are informative and provide legal knowledge as well as useful skills.

5. Install security cameras outside your home. Ring doorbells, security cameras placed above the garage door and security lights on the corners of the exterior of a home alert inhabitants to the presence of an intruder. Security cameras are a deterrent to criminals.

6. Never get in the car with someone, no matter what. If they have a weapon pointed at you and threaten you, do not get in the car with them. Your chances of survival are much better if they attack you in public than they are if you get in the car with them and they drive away with you. Yes, there are exceptions, but you cannot count on being an exception.

7. Always lock your doors at home and in your car. When you get into your car, lock the door immediately. When you arrive home, close your garage door behind you and then unload your car. Distracted people are targets for criminals.

8. Take note of your surroundings. Be aware of the people around you. Observe their behavior, notice what they are wearing, what they are driving, etc.

9. Make three right turns. If you think you are being followed while driving, make three right turns. If the car is still behind you after three right turns, that indicates you are indeed being followed. Call 911 and report it immediately as you drive to the nearest fire station or other place of safety. Do not get out of your car or stop driving until you are safe.

10. Allow a trusted family member or friend to track your location. While tracking is largely discouraged, it can be lifesaving. If you are in an abusive relationship and tracking is being used to monitor you, that person is not safe and should not have access to your location. However, it is a good idea to allow one or two trusted persons access to your location. My family and I use the Find Friends app on our iPhones and Apple watches. Additionally, I often take an AirTag with me when I go for a walk or run. It is easily hidden and if someone were to take my phone, I would likely still have the tag somewhere on me.

It is not fair that we live in a world where we must be on guard. I am sorry for all of us who have to be prepared for a life-threatening attack. Until we live in a world completely devoted to God, we will face evil and all it brings to our lives.

The best strategies for safety are to be alert, to avoid threatening situations and to know self defense. If you assume you are at risk, you will be more likely to avoid a life-threatening situation. It is when we are caught off guard that we are most at risk.

RESETTING & RESTORING HEALTH

It was a sunny summer morning in 1982 in the idyllic town of Florence, Alabama. Dr. Alexander Ly, a first-generation immigrant from Taiwan, opened the doors to his acupuncture clinic. Like most quintessential stories about the American dream, this one is no different. Arriving with just a suitcase in hand in 1976, Ly went to Auburn University and completed his postgraduate degree study. He loved the peaceful, pastoral lifestyle of the deep South and knew this was the perfect setting for him to share his family legacy of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture.

Young Alexander learned from his father, Dr. SuHuai Ly, who was a well esteemed practitioner and instructor of Chinese medicine and acupuncture in China and Taiwan. During the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949, Su-Huai and his family sought refuge in Taipei, Taiwan. Treating patients alongside his father, Alexander witnessed the innate healing abilities of the human body when using centuries-old herbal formulas and acupuncture to treat illness and in turn restore health. He coined a term “reset” for the process of initiating healing pathways that influence the body to change, and he foresaw that the future of health care would involve collaboration between Eastern and Western medicine.

Fast forward to today. Dr. Ly Natural Health is celebrating its 40th anniversary and Dr. Alexander Ly still personally attends his clinics which have expanded to Huntsville, AL, and Memphis, TN. The Ly family legacy continues full steam ahead; now at the helm are Drs. Amy and Helen Ly, daughters of Alexander. Drs. Amy and Helen Ly

are board-certified neurologists and certified medical acupuncturists. Embracing their family heritage, they are now the fourth generation in the Ly family to provide Chinese medicine and acupuncture. They are based in Memphis, in the same location on North Highland Street where Alexander established the clinic in 1986. Dedicated to their calling and unique background, in 2017 they founded Integrative Health Associates, where a multidisciplinary approach is used to treat patients with neurological conditions. In 2021, they founded Brain Body Balance, a one-of-akind medical clinic offering transcranial magnetic stimulation, a noninvasive, cutting-edge treatment for neurological and mental-health disorders that works by improving brain function.

GRAHAM CRACKER CRUST:

10 oz. graham crackers (33-36)

½ cup unsalted butter, melted

1 tsp. ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350˚. Lightly grease a 9-inch springform pan. Set aside. In a food processor, process the graham crackers into fine crumbs. Pour in melted butter and add cinnamon. Pulse just until blended. Pour mixture into prepared springform pan and press into the bottom and up the sides of the pan. Try to distribute as evenly as possible. Bake 7 minutes. Remove and cool while preparing the filling. Reduce oven temperature to 300˚.

FILLING:

12 oz. high-quality white chocolate, chopped (I use Ghirardelli)

½ cup heavy cream

3 8-oz. packages of cream cheese, softened

⅓ cup sugar 4 eggs 1 Tbsp. vanilla

In a small saucepan, melt chocolate with

the cream over low heat. Stir often until smooth. Remove and set aside. Add cream cheese and sugar to a large mixing bowl. Beat on high until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time, blending well after each egg. Slowly add the melted chocolate mixture and vanilla and blend until combined. Pour mixture into the baked crust. Place on a baking sheet.

Also place a small pan of water on the lowest rack in the oven to create moisture during baking. Bake 5055 minutes or until the edges of the cheesecake are firm but the center is still slightly soft. Remove and set aside while preparing sour cream topping. Increase oven temperature to 400˚.

SOUR CREAM TOPPING:

1 ¾ cups sour cream

¼ cup sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

In a small mixing bowl, beat sour cream, sugar and vanilla. Pour mixture over the cheesecake. Return to oven and bake 5 minutes. Remove and cool to room temperature. Run a knife along the

edge of the cake to help release it from the pan and avoid cracking. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

SWEET BERRY CREAM:

1 cup heavy whipping cream

¼ cup fresh blackberries

¼ cup fresh raspberries

2 Tbsp. sugar

Add the above ingredients to a blender and purée until smooth. Transfer to a container and refrigerate until ready to use.

TO SERVE:

Slice cheesecake and place slices on individual plates. Top with a couple of spoonfuls of berry cream and fresh berries. Enjoy!
