WhenDebbie Dees and her husband Philip began planning to build their custom home, they put designer Cindy McCord in charge of finding all the new things for it. But not all new-new. “We mixed a lot,” McCord recalls, explaining how she envisioned a design aesthetic for the home that would blend fresh pieces with time-honored, classic elements in every room.

McCord came on board early, while architect Jeff Bramlett was still drawing plans for the Germantown home. Being part of the process from the start gave her the chance to find treasures while the home was being built by David Clark Construction. “I had so many pretty things for this house in my storage, some for two years, waiting for them to move in,” says the designer.

April 2024 • athomemms.com | 29

McCord says a great relationship with her clients allowed her the freedom to make choices for the home throughout the planning and construction phases. “The key is that they trusted me.” She had worked with the couple before on their previous home in Cordova, so they felt comfortable with McCord’s selections.

In the entryway she paired two complementary wallpapers, a classic large-scale pattern in neutral tones for the walls and a subdued, textured one by Phillip Jeffries for the ceiling. A French-style antiqued mirror from Garner Framing Co. enhances the sense of space and reflects the natural light that enters the welcoming area through the glasspaned front doors and transoms.

Custom built-in bookshelves and cabinets anchor the living room, an important architectural element for such a large open space, says McCord. For extra interest and to highlight the shelves’ contents, she added three sets of dual-arm brass sconces with matching shades from Visual Comfort. Coffered ceilings give the space a tucked-in and cozy feel without being heavy. McCord painted the entire room in the same color, Stucco by Sherwin Williams, using different finishes from eggshell to semi gloss to provide a bit of variation.

Twin sofas and a pair of generously sized armchairs provide comfortable seating. At each corner of the furniture layout McCord placed an end table with a basket. The designer says she always likes to create a “zone” for each person who will use such a space regularly to stash glasses, remotes and anything else they want handy.

Full-length drapes add a bit of pattern on a wall of windows that can fully open to combine the room with the adjacent screen porch. “It’s a dream for entertaining. It doubles the room size,” McCord says.

Theliving room flows into the kitchen, a space smaller than the one in the family’s previous home. Its compact layout is fine with Dees, though, who says she is happy with everything about it, particularly the amount of storage space.

The paneled, built-in refrigerator and freezer create clean-lined harmony uninterrupted by large expanses of stainless steel. While the homeowner loves the look, she admits it was a bit confusing to her young grandchildren at first. Dees recalls with a laugh, “The first time they came over I asked one of them to get something out of the frig. They couldn’t find it!”

The stainless and brass vent hood is a showstopper, custom made for the home by Metalaire Louver. Its tones pick up the warm and cool accents of the Taj Mahal quartzite McCord used for the countertops on the base cabinets as well as the island.

Just off the kitchen a scullery provides extra work and storage space in the most appealing setting. Here, the designer introduced a pretty robin’s egg blue on the cabinets. Cafe curtains allow light in, but can be drawn for privacy when needed. Dees says the extra dishwasher and refrigerator in the scullery are indispensable when her family comes over, and the out-of-the-way space is great for keeping small appliances handy yet off display.

McCord envisioned the dining room with casual elegance in mind, wanting the family to be equally comfortable having a quick breakfast or Thanksgiving dinner there. Bramlett modified the original plan to make room for the large round table Dees wanted to accommodate her whole family. The alteration made way for the room’s loveliest feature, a set of built-in, glass-front upper cabinets with drawers below. BylerCraft of Whiteville, TN, created the pieces, along with all the cabinetry in the home, and added the graceful trim. The soft blue-green paint pulls from the Oushak rug McCord used as the jumping-off point for the room’s color palette.

Eight of Hickory Chair’s Saint Giorgio upholstered chairs fit around the Chaddock dining table. McCord loves the practicality of the handle feature on top of each chair. She decked the seat cushions out in neutral fabric and added a smart boucle for the backs in tones that pick up the rusty red of the rug. The crowning glory of the room is the light fixture, a two-tiered chandelier draped in white glass bead strands. A painting by California artist Elise Morris, sourced from Goetz Art and Design, completes the decor.

A wing off the kitchen is home to a series of utilitarian spaces that are anything but basic. McCord’s expert touch is just as evident in the office, laundry room, half bath and rear entry as in the areas where one would expect to see more of the designer’s influence. The laundry room combination of Schumacher’s Estelle wallpaper, a dressy gold fixture from Alexandra Lauren, scads of cabinets and marble counters takes the drudgery out of wash day. The office features built-in desks for two, complete with handsome oak tops stained to match the hardwood floors, and a full wall of storage that ensures a place for everything.

Separated

from the

rest of the main floor by a light-filled passageway, the primary suite is a study in serenity. “I like bedrooms to be soft, kind of tranquil. Light and airy,” says McCord. With a peaceful blue palette, this bedroom is a haven for relaxation. The vaulted ceiling soars, lined in white tongue and groove paneling, and holds an oversized chandelier perfectly scaled to fill the space. The upholstered headboard and elegant matching bench plus luxury bedding exude comfort. Convenience was on the designer’s mind as well. The drapes on the room’s large windows can be opened and closed remotely from the comfort of the bed or from any other location via a dedicated app.

Theensuite bath rivals that at any spa, with an extra roomy shower and separate soaking tub. McCord selected large rectangular marble tile for the floor and shower walls, and the finished product is stunning, thanks to extra care from the installers. Before installation, the crew laid all the tile out to make sure each piece was placed properly. This pre-planning created a balanced effect between the light and dark veined areas of the natural stone.

Dees is especially fond of her own special spot, a vanity area off the main bathroom where she can sit to get ready for the day. McCord chose a classic wallpaper pattern in soft blues and white for an extra feminine touch.

The home’s design is the perfect example of how a client’s trust in a talented designer’s ability results in a comfortable and cohesive home where the transitional and traditional blend seamlessly.

THE BEST IT CAN BE

DESIGN
DESIGN

From the first step into this Germantown home, the custom features that make it truly one of a kind are immediately evident. The charming gingerbread that embellishes the stairway’s skirtboard, the painted poplar paneled walls, the hidden closet cleverly tucked under the staircase—nothing is ordinary.

The owners knew what they wanted in their new house— big-picture facets like the floor plan as well as small details. The dream team of architect Ed Yendrek, homebuilder Michael Murphy and designer Christian Warren understood the vision and brought it to life, using their expertise to make the clients’ unique dream home a reality.

“From the first meeting, Ed and Michael went through the full process of making sure we got everything exactly how we wanted it,” says the husband. “They made tons of suggestions that we hadn’t even thought of and accommodated what we wanted to do.”

Murphy emphasizes the benefit of having both the architect and the builder involved from square one to ensure that creativity and feasibility go hand in hand.

As owner of Murphy Custom Homes, his goal is to “make sure every ounce of the house is as good as it can be.” That often requires flexibility on the part of everyone involved. “When you’re building a super-custom home like this, there’s only so much you can realize looking at it on paper. When it gets framed up, opportunities for improvement can come and I always want to present them,” he says.

Ap ril 2024 • athomemms.com | 43 HOME FEATURE
DESIGN

He also likes to be involved in selecting materials and finishes, going the extra mile to be certain that what looks good in a showroom will also look good in place. He accompanied the homeowners to choose flooring and went along to meet with master craftsman Wade Burrus to plan the custom beams that now grace several rooms.

On a recent return to the home his clients moved into late last summer, Murphy reminisced about the process of creating some of the project’s most unique features. “I spent a lot of time on that molding,” he says of the impressive woodwork in the dining room. “Figuring out the built-in took a lot of work with the trim carpenter. He and the cabinetmaker, Joe Byler, did an awesome job.”

The massive custom hutch and cabinet feature details that harken back to an earlier time, a concept that was important to the clients. The team looked to homes from the 1920s for inspiration to create an aesthetic that could combine all the latest bells and whistles with the charm and timelessness of that era. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the scullery, where modern appliances like refrigerator drawers and a beverage cooler stand alongside retro-style cabinets with a vintage two-tone paint treatment. A porcelain farm sink and soapstone countertops complete the nostalgic vibe.

Both these clients had separate must-haves based on their hobbies; Yendrek, Murphy and company delivered in spades. While it may seem that garages would be an afterthought in the full spectrum of home design and construction, this project was just the opposite. The husband knew just what he wanted to make the most of his passion for cars, and it became the team’s goal to provide him the ultimate facility. The result is a four-bay garage complete with custom storage and the star of the show, a car lift. Murphy and the homeowner spent an entire afternoon while the house was under construction sketching on the garage floor the configuration to accommodate the lift. The ceiling and garage door had to be modified, but the end result turned out so well that the husband’s car-loving friend now uses it too.

DESIGN

Anavid crafter, the wife envisioned the ultimate space where she could create to her heart’s content. Her new craft room is a hobbyist’s dream, organized floor to ceiling with all the papers, ribbons, beads and other supplies she needs. Even the closet was custom outfitted to her specifications. “I told them I wanted it to be long and skinny, where I can store stuff on both sides and just have a walkway. And that’s exactly what they gave me, with a pocket door so there’s no wasted space,” she says. Clare Richardson, owner and closet designer for Trazo Design, devised the masterpiece craft room and closet after an extensive inventory using shelves, drawers, cabinets, drawer inserts and work spaces to provide an intentional place and flow for every little thing.

The Trazo team went on to provide what can only be described as a “realityshow” type of experience the homeowners won’t soon forget. Once construction was almost finished, all the decisions had been made and only minor finishing details remained for Murphy and crew, the homeowners left on vacation. When they returned it was time for the big “reveal” a la HGTV. While the couple was out of town, the Trazo organizers oversaw the packing and move out of their former home and moved them into the new house. From dishes in the kitchen to clothes in the closets, everything was in place and pristinely organized when the new homeowners returned.

The wife recalls her first walk-through in her newly furnished place. “It was almost overwhelming. I didn’t even say much because I was in awe.” The perfect reaction to the home perfectly customized for her, the place where every square inch is the best it can be.

The Oxford

780 CARDINAL COVE PIPERTON, TN 38017

The Oxford invites guests into a space filled with sophistication and Southern charm. This timeless treasure was brought to life with the plan design drawn by Mike Trexler and the quality execution of builder John Duke. Designer Kim Loudenbeck of Warehouse 67 came on board at the onset to ensure a creative and cohesive design carried throughout the process.

This meticulously crafted 4-bedroom, 3.5bath custom home offers an unparalleled level of elegance and functionality. The unique 3,800-square-foot space lives much larger than the number would suggest, reflecting the thoughtful planning of the architect in placing space where it is needed, rather than wasted. Attention to detail elevates the luxury of this home at every turn, with exceptional moldings and bespoke finishes.

Layers of stunning lighting, exquisite cabinetry, and curated furnishings provided by Warehouse 67 bring a harmonious blend of style and functionality to this inspiring show home.

The heart of the home is the gourmet kitchen, with the stunning dining room placed beside the living area which opens up to a lovely porch for memorable gatherings with family and friends. Additionally, the first level offers an ensuite guest space and a secluded primary suite. An adorable powder room along with an efficient office nook and laundry room complete the main floor living space, offering all of the modern amenities of function and comfort to the modern family. The Richmond

The town of Richmond is full of beauty and history; once home to several royal families and full of lush open spaces. The Murphy Maude Interiors team drew from these characteristics as inspiration for their 2024 Vesta Home. The Richmond offers luxury and an open concept perfect for entertaining. Carefully selected finishes, furniture and art create an inviting atmosphere, while clean lines and spacious layouts reflect modern living and comfort.

As you enter the home, wooden ceilings with beams draw you in though the entry to the kitchen and breakfast nook. The kitchen features custom cabinets with modified shaker doors in a honeycolored stain. Natural textures add life to the space with the cream-colored plaster vent hood and quartz countertops. Off the kitchen you’ll find a scullery which provides even more storage and work space.

The family room, located next to the kitchen in the open concept, features a tumbled stone fireplace

with wood accents and built-in shelving: a stunning environment for spending time with family and friends. Natural light pours in from the large sliding glass doors that provide access to the back porch seating area, complete with an outdoor fireplace.

In the dining room you’ll find trim work paneling around the room, highlighting a custom mural. Wallcoverings, art and textiles for the home were all provided by Murphy Maude Interiors’ sister company, Mable Originals. Every Mable Originals product begins as a work of art by a local artist. The Murphy Maude Interiors team loves using these pieces to add a bespoke element to their designs.

The primary bedroom is light and airy, a perfect spot to relax. A custom recessed bed and neutral geometric wallpaper are the focal points for the room. The primary bath provides respite, with beautiful marble solid surfaces surrounding the soaking tub, and large ceramic tile with the feel of natural slat wood.

The rest of the home includes a listening lounge for music lovers, an office/lounge, a guest room, and a slumber party/play room with built-in bunk beds for the ultimate sleepover. There is a double garage with an attached mudroom, and an additional single garage.

When designing the Richmond, Murphy Maude Interiors’ goal was to seamlessly blend luxury with comfort through a striking mix of organic materials and modern amenities. The team feels confident that the future homeowners will find solace and joy here, and create many happy memories within its walls.

Designing Life with Intention:

A Journey of Self-Discovery and Empowerment

LIFE

is a journey of becoming, a continuous process of designing and redesigning our lives. It’s not a January 1 resolution thing that falls away as the year moves forward. It is a continual course of becoming, a natural part of life.

Sometimes, this process is driven by circumstances we happen to experience, and other times it’s fueled by the desire to change circumstances we no longer wish to endure. When we find ourselves in the midst of “designing” our lives, setting intentions becomes critical.

Intention is a potent word. It signifies setting a direction for your life and being purposeful in your actions. However, understanding our intentions requires a deep understanding of ourselves. In my practice as a mental health therapist, I employ Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy as my primary therapeutic approach. I believe it’s one of the most effective models to help individuals understand themselves and their intentions. It goes beyond personality tests, which might tell you about your personality and behaviors. IFS brings awareness of how your experiences up to now have impacted you and influence your ability to direct how you live from now on.

Designing your life requires setting intentions and empowering yourself in all aspects of your life: spiritually, physically, mentally and emotionally. It requires

mindfully engaging in your daily life experiences. It requires you to dictate your time and resources. If the world dictates your time and schedule, you’re not designing your life; you’re merely living by default. This is where the distinction between living a life by design versus living a life by default becomes apparent.

The process of designing your life involves reflection, curiosity and identifying patterns in your life. It’s about welcoming all emotions like a child in need and setting intentions to be present, to persevere and be purposeful. This approach involves not only setting goals but also understanding the deeper motivations behind those goals and ensuring they align with your core self.

Setting goals provides focus, enhances productivity and increases commitment. However, it’s essential to set goals that are aligned with your intentions and values, rather than goals imposed by societal expectations or external pressures. If you let external factors dictate your life, you’re not truly designing it.

Designing your life with intention goes beyond achieving specific goals or milestones. It is creating a life that is in harmony with your deepest values and aspirations, making conscious choices that reflect who you are and who you want to become. This process requires ongoing self-reflection, self-awareness and selfcompassion.

102 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • April 2024
HEALTHY YOU

One of the key aspects of designing a life with intention is embracing the concept of mindfulness. This means becoming aware of the elements that create challenges and the ones that bring harmony with your values and beliefs. You must begin to make decisions that are in your best interest, ones that guide you toward your desired future. It requires being proactive rather than reactive. When you live with intention and purpose, you naturally deepen your connections with yourself and with the world around you.

In my work as a therapist, I’ve seen the transformative power of intention in action. When individuals set clear intentions and align their actions with those intentions, they experience a sense of purpose and fulfillment that transcends external achievements. They become more resilient, adaptable and connected to their inner wisdom.

Designing your life with intention is a journey that requires courage, commitment and compassion. It's a journey of self-discovery, self-acceptance and self-empowerment; one that invites you to explore the depths of your being, to embrace your unique gifts and talents, and to create a life that is truly your own.

If you are ready to embark on a journey of living life with intention, remember that the goal is not perfection, but progress. It’s about taking small steps each day that move you closer to your core self and your deepest aspirations, embracing the journey, and believing in your ability to create a life that is meaningful, fulfilling and aligned with your highest intentions.

THE EXCHANGE CLUB CARL PERKINS CENTER FOR THE PREVENTION OF CHILD ABUSE

The Exchange Club Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse provides support to families in Fayette County and 19 other counties throughout West Tennessee in preventing and dealing with child abuse and to preserve and improve the quality of family life. The organization is the charity partner for this month’s VESTA Home Show and will receive a portion of the proceeds from the three-week-long event in Piperton.

“As a child advocacy center, we work with law enforcement, the Department of Children’s Services, the district attorney’s office, and juvenile court to investigate severe child abuse allegations,” says Haley Duffey, director of the Fayette County branch of the center. “The Carl Perkins Center provides forensic interviews, therapy, victim advocacy and nurturing parenting classes. We also offer child abuse prevention training for adults and children.”

During April, National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and all year long, the staff works to help families stabilize after child abuse. Says Duffey, “With the help of our community we make sure our clients and families have food, water and electricity. We know that children and families can’t heal from abuse if their basic needs aren’t met.”

All services provided by the center are 100 percent free to everyone. “Child abuse does not discriminate. It pays no respect to gender, race, religion or socio-economic status,” Duffey adds.

“In 2023 we provided 52 forensic interviews to children ages three to 18,” explains the director. “Since our doors opened in Fayette County in January 2016, the number of severe abuse cases has doubled. Originally we averaged one new case per week, now we average two. Our cases didn’t double because more abuse occurred, but rather because more abuse was reported. We work hard to spread awareness that we are here by networking and by providing child abuse education in schools, churches, local festivals, etc. People are learning what should be reported and how to report. They know they can call us for help.”

“We dream of a day when we are no longer needed. That will take us ALL joining together and prioritizing the safety and well-being of all children,” Duffey says.

For more information on the Fayette County Carl Perkins Center’s services and needs, or to make a donation, go to carlperkinscenter.org or call 901.235.7283.
