PUBLISHER'S

Note

We are so excited to bring you this October issue that has a special focus on two topics that are important to so many of us; our homes and our health. Last year, due to the devastating virus, our homes were not only our shelters, but our safe havens to keep us healthy. Fortunately, with record speed, a vaccine was developed that made it possible for our homes to once again become the places we gather with our friends and family instead of bunkers where we quarantine in fear. The pandemic changed so much of how we live and even some of our home design needs. That open floor plan many of us enjoy is still popular, but many of us working from home now have found the need for a more private, secluded workspace. In this issue we are thrilled to bring you a sneak peek at the West Tennessee Home Builders Association’s 2021 VESTA Home Show. This year’s show opens a little later in the year than usual, but will be well worth the wait! Beginning Saturday, November 20, and continuing through Sunday, December 12, you will be able to tour five elegant homes with an added extra treat. Not only will you find the most up-to-date ideas in home design, this year the $2 million show homes will be beautifully decorated with Christmas cheer. There will be so many ways to enjoy their beauty, from “Chat Backs" with top designers to wine and craft beer tastings. Rotation dinners with celebrity chefs will also be an added feature, making this year’s VESTA Home Show truly a great event offering something for everyone! I love fall and MOST all that it brings. Those of you who know me well also know how I despise those horrid cinnamon brooms. But that aside, bring on the cooler temps, football and VESTA! Cheers to getting out with family and friends and enjoying it all, and cheers to good health!

"Go with

what you know” is always

a good idea. Tiger Hall, one of the homes featured in the 2020 Vesta Home Show, is proof. Sisters Amy Mobley and Katie Norrid, owners of City Hill Design, found inspiration for the project’s guiding concept from the city they know and love. Says Mobley, “If you're from here, you love all

The team of sisters and lifelong Memphians sent David Anderson and all the collaborators who would contribute to Tiger Hall that concept and a vision packet. “We gave them color tones, the vibe that we were going for and the keywords that we were looking for,” Mobley says. Their other guiding concept was to create a show home from which guests

mobley

was excited to

work in tandem with Tiger Hall’s builder, City Hill Homes, owned by her husband Zach Mobley and Jonathan Draper. “People think that because our companies have the same name, we always work together,” she says, “but this was our first full crossover project. It helped that I’m married to the contractor—we could talk him into a lot more. He was a good sport.” Norrid explains that the design team, which also included Rachel Welch, relished the chance to step outside familiar parameters. “We were like, ‘What can we do, what has Memphis not seen? Can we mix it up and shake up what you normally see at a home show—give people some things they haven’t seen before without being too wild or weird?’” Their concepts hit both marks. The house has innovations galore and nods to the Bluff City everywhere, starting with the exterior elevation. In an homage to Graceland, Memphis’ most iconic home, Anderson gave Tiger Hall two symmetrical rows of windows across the front. He also situated a balcony above the front door, a perfect fit for its Spring Creek neighborhood, where families often visit in front yards. Both Mobley and Norrid live in Spring Creek, so they know firsthand how neighbors spend lots of time out in the common spaces and chatting with each other. Tuscan Iron Entries fabricated the home’s iron and glass front door, the matching rear door and all the iron work. Light spills into the entryway, illuminating a show-stopping floor that marries wood and marble in a custom pattern that Mobley says was a study in collaboration between the home’s flooring and stone artisans. The open stairway also provided a challenge for contractors, but the result is unparalleled. Anderson designed the staircase facing the home’s rear side, and with open treads, again to maximize light.

having

a game room directly off the front entry is decidedly outside-the-box architecture,

but it works beautifully in Tiger Hall. Separated from the foyer by a wall of frosted, ribbed glass, the area features a pull-down projection screen, a full bar and a comfy sectional upholstered in, of course, blue suede. City Hill designed the piece with open sections to accommodate viewing the action both on the TV screen and at the custom shuffleboard table behind it. The “Easy Tiger” neon sign above the bar was a huge hit with Vesta attendees. “We could have sold 20 of those!” laughs Norrid. Across the entry the formal living room opens to the kitchen to the right and the dining area at the rear, where light floods in through a wall of windows. In the kitchen, handmade cabinetry from BylerCraft in Whiteville, TN, is the star of the show. Norrid calls the kitchen island a labor of love from the craftsmen. “It has reeded detail all along the sides with hidden drawers built in. It’s high-lacquer black and it looks like an antique chest. The top was almost like a table overlay and the legs are all on little brass casters.” Adds Mobley, “One thing we found is unless you work with somebody who really custom makes everything, it's hard to create a vision—something that's not your normal or typical piece. They literally made every detail come alive.”

adjacent

to the

kitchen, a scullery and butler’s pantry make entertaining a breeze. So much prep space, as well as the home’s effortless flow from room to room and to patio areas both in front and behind create a perfect setup for entertaining. Two bedroom/bath suites, the primary and a guest, complete the downstairs. On the second floor, much of the space is the domain of the homeowners’ teenage daughter. Mobley says she and Norrid had a blast designing the area and took inspiration from decor superstar Kelly Wearstler. The custom upholstered bed and funky light fixture provide a subtle 80’s vibe and the gallery wall is anything but standard. Layered over picture-frame molding, art is attached to chains suspended from the ceiling. The homeowners requested a home gym and City Hill delivered masterfully. From the mirrored wall to the combination wood/ rubberized floor, to the locker-room style closet, the space is the perfect setting for working out, topped off by a custom mural of a stylized Bluff City skyline by Sam Reeves. That mural is just one of a gallery’s worth of local art pieces Norrid and Mobley placed in the house as a love letter to their hometown. The designers approached a long list of local artists, explaining their all-things-Memphis concept for the show home, and they were amazed by the response. “So many people painted specific pieces just for the Vesta. I was blown away!” says Norrid. 34 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • October 2021

tiger hall

is home to art from Leslie Barron, Meghan Hurdle, David Butler, Erika

Roberts, Katie Toombs, Pam McDonnell, Maggie Russell, Chelsea Fly, Candace Boatright and Drew Barham, who just happens to be the brother of Mobley and Norrid. Not just local artists, the subject matter is also pure Memphis. It spans the landscape from Skateland to Shelby Farms to downtown trolleys. And there’s a who’s who of local music legends: Elvis, Johnny Cash, BB King and Justin Timberlake. The music itself became art in a downstairs hallway where classic albums and singles line the walls in a fun geometric pattern. Winks to the Mid South keep coming, but in subtle ways. The built-in kegerator in the bar sports a tap from Grind City Brewing and crushed velvet on the headboard in the downstairs guest bedroom is a modern take on decor from the home of the King himself. Tigers roam on the dramatic wallpaper in the powder room. Local vendors like Elle Woven rugs and Blue Pencil home organization also put their mark on Tiger Hall to create a true showplace with the best of Memphis. In fact, Norrid says her young daughter proclaimed City Hill’s Vesta masterpiece so recently. “We were out riding in the neighborhood in the golf cart and we went past the house. My little girl stood up and said, ‘Look, Mama, it’s the best stuffs house!’” Truer words were never spoken.

Nottingham 9255 Forest Bend Ct. Germantown, TN 38138

T

he Nottingham was born from the desire to design a home that is timeless and classic with a twist. Designer Kim Loudenbeck of Warehouse 67 worked with builder John Duke to develop a home in the English Manor style that perfectly blends this traditional architectural backdrop with a modern and functional floor plan. The two-acre estate embraces elegance and luxury while meeting the needs of today’s modern family. The large family room overlooks the inviting bluestone patio with fireplace as well as a traditionally styled English garden and pool. Mirroring the family room to feel like part of the main living space sits the large kitchen with paneled appliances and cabinetry to the ceiling. Flooded with natural light and a view of the charming courtyard, the scullery off the kitchen houses an additional dishwasher, sink and Miele espresso maker with ample storage for utmost function. One of the most exciting features of the home is the amazing staircase with the glass-encased, 60 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • October 2021

temperature-controlled wine room. This beautiful space will suitably showcase any wine lover ’s collection! The bar across the hall also features a wine station that keeps up to four bottles of wine at the perfect temperature and maintains the freshness for 60 days. To pamper furry best friends, the designers added fun features such as a dog watering station at the end of the island and a canine playroom with dog shower, storage and access to the backyard. Upstairs features a library, a large recreation/ media room, and three bedrooms with dedicated baths. For the Vesta show, one of the bedrooms is styled as a gym to showcase the versatility of these beautiful spaces. From plans to furnishings and everything in between, the design team worked together with a goal of staying true and consistent to the modern elegance of this timeless treasure throughout the build, resulting in a memorable, quality home for modern family living.

uilder Michael Murphy commissioned architect Jeff Bramlett to design a home that would fully realize the all- at-once grand and quaint nature of the unique twoacre lot on which Buckley Manor is set. The property exemplifies the ease and luxury of contemporary living in tandem with the timeless beauty of British Arts and Crafts architecture. The home takes cues from the classic architectural style with its steep roof pitches, hip and gable combinations, cascading rooflines and subtle rake details. No detail is spared in Buckley's interior or exterior. Upon stepping through the front door, you are met again with the notion of both grand and quaint living as a singular notion. The two-story entry features a sprawling window over an oak stairwell. The living room seems 72 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • October 2021

to pour into the backyard with its expansive bank of windows flooding light and life into the heart of the home. The kitchen's scale is, of course, large, but the warm materiality beckons intimate dinners around the island. Off the kitchen are giant sliding glass doors that invite indoor/outdoor living on the cozy, truly Southern screened porch. As you move through the rest of the home, touch its door frames and stand under its glittering lights, the attention to detail becomes all the more evident. Interior designer Christian Warren of scw/d studio, led the team in selections for all interior fixtures and finishes. She was deeply inspired by the architect's take on the British style and was keen to use a similar language for the interior selections, making the home a cohesive, Southern manifestation of a classic European design canon.

T h e Bank

is Presenting Sponsor of the 2021 Vesta Home Show at Forest Bend Acres. Our Bank has a long tradition of sponsoring the Vesta Home Show. This is our sixth year as a presenting sponsor, and we are excited to play a part in what may be the best home show ever. The Bank is financing Dave Moore Companies’ Vesta Home and several other homes and lots in the development. Our Bank has been financing homes and helping our neighbors achieve the “American Dream” for over 117 years. We truly believe that we were founded to help build and strengthen communities through home ownership. “ The Bank” is the trade name for The Bank of Fayette County and its five-county network of branches. We were founded in the back of the mercantile store in Moscow, Tennessee, in 1905. We have 11 branches covering Fayette County and serve our communities under the trade names of The Bank of Collierville, The Bank of Mason located in Tipton County, The Bank of Hardeman County and The Bank of McNairy County. To serve our customers in northeast Shelby County, we are currently building The Bank of Arlington. We expect it to open in the spring of 2022. People often ask, “Why should I bank with you? What makes your bank different?” The answer is simple…we care. Our motto is “We Live Here, We Work Here, We Worship Here, We Serve Here.” Community banking is about service and making your community better for everyone. It is about helping real people navigate life’s real problems. That's what we have been doing for 117 years and we do it well. We help your neighbors, your local businesses, your places of worship, and we want to help you. Unlike large banks, our underwriting is quick and tailored to our customers’ unique circumstances. Unlike small banks, we invest heavily in technology and offer great mobile services with local customer support. Unlike credit unions, we actually pay our fair share of income taxes and help fund our great country. Our bank paid $3 million in income taxes last year, while credit unions that earned 10 times more did not pay a dime in federal or state income taxes. Unlike mortgage companies, we can keep your loan in house and not sell it to a national company. Unlike most banks, our employees are shareholders through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan and participate in the growth and success of our bank. And finally unlike most banks, we measure our success not in dollars but in the betterment of our communities. In closing, we would like to invite you to the 2021 Vesta Home Show and hope that you will stop by and visit us at our booth there or at one of our convenient locations.

NATURAL-LOOKING FACIAL RESTORATION by Phillip R. Langsdon, MD, FACS

We all age! One day we are looking young; then out of the blue we start looking

tired...or perhaps older. First, we might notice a squint or frown line. Later we start to see the beginning of jowls, neck sagging or possibly some eyelid puffiness. We may notice sunken areas beneath the eye region, then our cheeks may lose volume and smile lines deepen. And then there are wrinkles and age spots. Sometimes we can’t pinpoint what is changing, we just start looking older. No one likes to lose their youthful appearance, but many of us fear treatment because we are afraid we will end up looking “overdone” or “windblown.” Those odd-looking celebrities with duckbill lips or stretched- out faces don’t give us confidence, however, it does not have to be that way. A very natural look is possible with treatments designed to restore or preserve a youthful facial appearance. It just depends on who is doing the treatment and the technique they use. It is not the name of the surgical technique (like a facelift) or the product (like Botox) that causes unnatural results, it is who is providing the treatment and how it is done. The biggest fear of all is the facelift, or rhytidectomy. This is the procedure used to reduce facial and neck sagging as well as to remove excess fat and loose skin. Many people equate the term “facelift” with that stretched or overdone look. This occurs as a result of the provider and the type of technique used rather than the name of the technique. A facelift done by surgeons who specialize in the face and do them on a weekly or daily basis has the potential to offer very natural-looking results. The recipient looks rested and refreshed and it is very difficult for any observer to know what has been done. The same natural-looking results can be obtained with treatment of the eyelid region. Conservative upper and lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can be done in a manner that does not create an unnatural shape to the eyelids. Sometimes the very eyelid fat that is causing the problem can be used to improve the deep groove that develops below the lower lids at the junction of the upper cheek, the area called the tear trough. Sometimes surgery can be entirely avoided by using injectable fillers to improve the tear trough. It is remarkable how youthful someone can look by removing the excess eyelid tissue or by using fillers in the tear trough. Injectable fillers can be given in a simple office procedure using topical numbing cream. Several areas of the face can be improved including the temples, tear troughs, cheeks, smile lines and the groove between the chin and jowl. Medical-grade skin care and in-office chemical peeling can reduce early wrinkling, clear sun damage and improve skin tone and discoloration. In summary, many treatment options are available, both surgical and non-surgical, to improve the signs of aging. The key is to find the right provider who specializes in the procedure requested and who does lots of those types of procedures.

IS INFLAMMATION WRECKING YOUR WEIGHT LOSS? By Allison White, Owner, WellnessMD Chronic inflammation can “confuse” your hunger indicators and the hormones that regulate your metabolism. When your body is inflamed, this can also affect your insulin resistance and cause you to retain water weight. According to research published in the journal Diabetes, there’s a connection between high levels of inflammatory indicators and future weight gain. Consuming specific anti-inflammatory foods helps to reduce inflammation. SALMON Fat is the main component in your body’s inflammationbalancing substances, which are called prostaglandins. Some prostaglandins reduce inflammation and others encourage it. To increase prostaglandins, it’s important to eat more foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon. Salmon contains both EPA and DHA; these are the same compounds in other fatty fish like tuna. Omega-3 fatty acids can lower inflammation levels and reduce LDL or “bad” cholesterol. They also reduce triglycerides, which cuts down on inflammation. FLAXSEEDS If you don’t like fish, you can get omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseeds. Flax has the highest natural concentration of vegetarian omega-3s, according to the Cleveland Clinic. You can sprinkle flaxseeds on yogurt or oatmeal or add them to a smoothie.

to snack sparingly, since nuts also contain fat and calories and can lead to unwanted weight gain if you consume too many. GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES The high fiber content of kale, lettuce and spinach makes them great choices for reducing inflammation. Fiber helps to regulate blood sugar and helps your body eliminate waste. Greens are also high in vitamin C, which cuts down on inflammation and fights aging. OLIVE OIL Instead of cooking your food in butter or lard, try olive oil. The antioxidants in olive oil can improve your health by helping to lower your blood pressure and encouraging blood circulation. Be sure to get the highest quality olive oil that doesn’t contain fillers like canola or vegetable oil. BERRIES Strawberries, blueberries and raspberries are high in antioxidants as well as in fiber and protein. These substances are key for fighting inflammation. Berries make a great snack and can be used as a topping for yogurt or oatmeal. You can also make a smoothie with berries that is protein-rich and filled with nutrients that will help you lose weight.

TART CHERRIES According to Oregon Health and Science University researchers, tart cherries have the “highest anti-inflammatory content of any food.” Tart cherries also have anthocyanins, antioxidants that reduce swelling just as well as some pain medications.

AVOCADO Avocado is full of healthy fats and also combats inflammation, so if you’re a fan of guacamole and avocado toast, you’re in luck. Avocados have an impressive amount of potassium, magnesium and fiber, which helps to purify the blood and aids in weight loss. One study revealed that having a slice of avocado with a hamburger will give you lower levels of inflammatory markers like IL-6 and NF-kB than eating a hamburger without this superfood.

BLUEBERRIES Blueberries are a healthy source of bioflavonoids, substances that have both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics. When your body is exposed to fewer free radicals, you’ll have less inflammation.

When you’re following an anti-inflammatory diet, you should limit or avoid certain foods. Red meat, margarine, beverages like soda and fruit juices, fried foods, and simple carbohydrates like white bread, pasta, bagels and crackers all serve to increase inflammation.

CURRY Curry gets its yellow color from bioflavonoids as well as from a spice called turmeric. According to University of Texas research, turmeric suppresses NF-kappa B, a compound that regulates the immune systemregulation protein that encourages inflammation. EDAMAME Edamame reduces inflammation in a number of ways, since they are high in both isoflavones and omega-3 fatty acids. Eating edamame lowers levels of C-reactive proteins, an indicator of inflammation. GREEN TEA Other blends of tea are effective, but green tea is more active in anti-inflammatory agents since it has a high flavonoid content, according to a 2012 study from India. NUTS Nuts like almonds and walnuts make great snacks because they are filled with protein and also contain omega-3s. However, it’s important

within the mouth? Even when not experiencing any dental issues, it is important to maintain regular check ups. SEMI-ANNUAL APPOINTMENTS REALLY DO MATTER. Visiting the dentist twice a year keeps the mouth’s bacteria level lower than can be achieved with at-home care. Routine visits allow professionals to catch things early, before they develop into larger issues.

Poor dental health increases the risk of bacterial infection in the bloodstream, which can impact the heart. It can also impact the health of an unborn child, including birth weight, so don’t skip dental visits while pregnant! Failure to prioritize oral care might contribute to various diseases and conditions including endocarditis, cardiovascular disease and pneumonia. And if you have diabetes, HIV/AIDS, osteoporosis or Alzheimer’s disease, it is important to offer your mouth a little extra support.

Dental hygienists use instruments that reach areas not accessible with regular brushing, getting below the gumline to clean out bad bacteria, and removing built-up tartar. An oral exam checks for gum health, level of

HIGH TECH & HIGH TOUCH A WAVE OF NEW MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY DEBUTS IN MEMPHIS

by Semmes Murphey

In the last year, a wave of life-changing medical innovations has debuted in Memphis. Semmes Murphey physicians have pioneered some of the most exciting technological breakthroughs in the field. This is due in part to one of the clinic’s founding principles: to continuously advance the field of neuroscience.

Robotic surgery gets golfer back into the swing Army veteran and avid golfer Bobby Gallimore found himself unable to walk 50 yards without extreme pain. “I could hardly fish, I couldn’t enjoy walking for exercise anymore, and golf was out of the question,” he says. He needed spine surgery and came to Semmes Murphey’s Dr. Kevin Foley for relief. In March, Gallimore became the first to receive a spine fusion using the world’s smallest spine surgery robot, the Fusion Robotics System. Dr. Foley developed the system to increase the quality and efficiency of spinal fusion surgeries. The minimally invasive procedure was a success. After a one-night hospital stay, Gallimore was back home with his family. “I can already walk further than I did before, and I’m looking forward to dusting off my golf clubs in the spring,” he says.

Soundwaves eliminate tremors At 78 years of age, Joyce Casillas suffered from essential tremors. She ignored the subtle shaking in her hands for years, but her condition progressed, impacting her arms, face and head with intense shaking. “It felt like my whole body was shaking. I couldn’t even steady myself enough to write my name,” she says. Casillas consulted neurosurgeon Dr. Aaron Bond for help. Dr. Bond told Joyce about MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound treatment, a new incisionless procedure that uses ultrasound energy to target tremor-causing cells. The treatment is an alternative to invasive brain surgery, which involves electrodes implanted into the brain. After weighing her options, Casillas decided to give it a try. “I was able to be awake during the whole thing. Altogether, it took about two hours, and I had immediate relief,” Casillas says. She is now able to write, eat and cook more confidently. Dr. Bond was involved in the early stages of research for this procedure. As a neurosurgeon, he knew how badly our population needed the treatment. “Many people assume their tremor is a sign of old age and don’t realize that there are treatments out there which can potentially eliminate their tremors. We want to make sure that our patients can get the care to go back to living comfortably,” he says. After being one of the first physicians in America to offer this procedure, he now is using it often, with great success. Through expert patient care and cutting-edge innovation, the physicians of Semmes Murphey Clinic continue to improve the lives of patients in Memphis, the Mid South and the world.

Intimate Partner Violence STORY MICHELLE JOHNS

MA, LPC-MHSP (TEMP), NCC, 200 HR E-RTY, 500 HR RYT

intimate

partner violence—t is a common occurrence. In fact, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused. One in four women and one in seven men have been severely abused (burned, beaten, or strangled) by an intimate partner during their lifetime. Additionally, it is reported one in seven women and one in 18 men have been stalked by an intimate partner during their lifetime. NCADV reports more than 20,000 calls per day placed to domestic violence hotlines. Women between the ages of 18 and 24 are the most common domestic violence victims. Domestic violence accounts for 15 percent of all crime and transcends all communities. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), the following numbers represent intimate partner violence in Tennessee and Mississippi: MISSISSIPPI • 39.7 percent of Mississippi women and 31.7 percent of Mississippi men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner sexual violence and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes. • On a typical day, local domestic violence hotlines receive approximately 19,159 calls, approximately 13 calls every minute. • In 2018, domestic violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime. • 65 percent of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner; 96 percent of the victims of these crimes are female. TENNESSEE • 39.6 percent of Tennessee women and 36.8 percent of Tennessee men experience intimate 98 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • October 2021

partner physical violence, intimate partner rape and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes. • 43 Tennesseans were murdered by intimate partners in 2014. Firearms were used in approximately 75 percent of these homicides. • 74,023 domestic violence crimes were reported to Tennessee law enforcement in 2014. Many others went unreported. • Approximately half of all forcible rapes reported to Tennessee law enforcement in 2014 were perpetrated by intimate partners. According to the World Health Organization, the following numbers represent the global domestic violence (meaning intimate partner violence) issue: • One in three women presenting to the emergency department after a trauma has been injured by her partner. • One in six women presenting to an orthopedic fracture clinic has experienced IPV in the previous 12 months. Did you notice how the numbers in the Mid South fall in line with the national and global numbers? What is domestic/intimate partner violence? Following is the United States Department of Health Services definition; “Domestic violence is sometimes called intimate partner violence. It includes physical, sexual or emotional abuse, as well as sexual coercion and stalking by a current or former intimate partner. An intimate partner is a person with whom you have or had a close personal or sexual relationship. Intimate partner violence affects millions of women each year in the United States.” It is a widespread problem in teenage dating as well as adult relationships. It occurs at every socio-economic level and in every type of relationship regardless of gender, religion or nationality. Children who witness domestic violence are impacted by the same symptoms as children who are physically abused.

H E A LT H Y Y O U Physical violence is often accompanied by emotional abuse and controlling behavior. Together, the abuses constitute a system of dominance and control. Domestic violence may result in physical injury, psychological trauma and even death. The devastating results of domestic violence can cross generations and last a lifetime. Physical abuse includes hair pulling, biting, hitting, slapping, strangling (often called choking), punching, kicking, shaking, bumping, holding as a means of preventing access to help, shoving, pushing, smothering and burning.* Emotional abuse includes controlling, name calling, humiliation, threatening, constant criticism, unfair accusations, monitoring of activities (with or without consent), possessive control, coercive control, isolation, degrading, belittling, controlling access to finances, and punishing.* Stalking includes repeated and unwanted phone calls, voice messages, text messages, pages, hang-ups, emails, instant messages or any other messages through electronic media or otherwise, sending gifts and/or letters, watching and/or following from a distance, spying with audio, video and/or GPS devices, showing up places unannounced and uninvited, leaving threatening items for the victim to find and damaging the victim’s personal property.* Abuse may be emotional, physical or both. It may be a onetime act, but most often is an ongoing situation. It leaves a

long list of lasting effects often resulting in post-traumatic stress disorder. Symptoms include shock, sadness, fear, anxiety, numbness, frustration, confusion, anger, grief, stress and worry. The symptoms are often ongoing, becoming a chronic part of the victim’s life. The emotional stressors can lead to physical ailments such as gastrointestinal issues, headaches, heart problems and mental health conditions. Victims report difficulty sleeping, eating and participating in daily life activities. To cope with the stress, many victims begin to use alcohol and other substances including prescription drugs.
