City Surveillance Boom

The a&s India’s latest issue on “City Surveillance” was very informative. The cover design and concept was impressive. I would like to congratulate a&s India team for the in-depth coverage. The latest products in the video surveillance, access control and fire protection segments were helpful to keep track of the trends in the market. This kind of special initiatives in publication helps the security industry to spread the awareness. There are many city surveillance projects getting launched in India. Indian cities desperately need city surveillance for the safety and security of their citizens.

Rajiv Kaul, New Delhi

Access Control Market

I am happy to read a very informative article on Access Control Market in India. The Indian access control market is still in the developmental stage. IT and BFSI segments are the early adopters of access control systems in India. The government’s efforts to modernize the country fuel the growth of the access control industry. The e-governance initiatives to make the technological and application benefits available to all citizens stimulate the smart cards market while opening up numerous applications, including the nationwide health card project -Rashtriya Swastya Bima Yojana (RSBY) and Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS). I am hoping the awareness about Access Control will grow with such initiatives in the government and corporate sector.

Indian Security Market Opportunity The Indian security market continues to attract lot of multinationals and venture capital investments. The market for security systems in India is expected to grow at a compounded annual rate of over 40% over the next three years. The Indian Security market comprises of access control systems, surveillance equipment, alarm systems, and fire detection and protection systems; approximately 60% of the products sold in India are imported. Rising concern over terrorism and crime and a growing outsourcing industry are the key drivers of demand. Indian Industry has to prepare for this opportunity.

‘Make in India’ or ‘Made in India’

May 2015

I was glad to read about “Vighnaharta A3A” in the latest issue, it is truly in sync with the vision of Prime Minister’s “Make in India” vision. The new topic storming people’s brains is ‘Make in India” or ‘Made in India’. As Narendra Modi launched a campaign for ‘Make in India’, many thinkers have become vocal about its pros and cons. ‘Make in India’ is mostly about emulating china in export led, growth oriented economy as china is facing hurdles like growing cost of labor and post-market servicing. While ‘made in India’ emphasizes more on industries based on home-grown technology. The Indian manufacturing sector is finally getting the much needed support from the government.

Secutech India Coverage I am glad to read about the detailed coverage of Secutech India 2015 in a&s India. Over the years show has grown in to one of the most impressive shows. The innovations like Knowledge Series Workshops and SHIELD Awards were appreciated by the industry. We look forward to a more evolved Secutech show in the year 2016. We hope to see lot of new fringe programmes as Indian security market is in a state of exponential growth. It will be a unique opportunity for Secutech to innovate.

AXIS Q6000-E Wins SHIELD Award in ‘The Most Innovative Product in Security’ Category

Hikvision and Eagle Eye Networks Provide Mobile Video Surveillance Solution

CP PLUS Rolls Out its First TVC to Highlight its Supremacy in the Video Surveillance Domain

Axis Communications, the market leader in network video, won the best innovative CCTV product award in India for its Q6000-E camera. Held for the first time in India, the Shield Awards focused on recognizing excellence in the Indian Electronic Security & Safety Industry. SECONA (The First Security Consultants’ Association from India) presented the SHIELD Awards powered by Secutech India in association with WIPRO at a glittering ceremony.

Hikvision, the global leader in innovative, award-winning video surveillance products and solutions, and Eagle Eye Networks, a cloud security camera video management system leader, have partnered with the Lawrence, Massachusetts Police Department to create a mobile surveillance solution. Hikvision cameras installed in a police van are linked to the Eagle Eye Security Camera Video Management System (VMS) to provide high quality, secure remote access to live and recorded video. This installation allows the police to provide cutting edge video surveillance in areas that need it the most, while eliminating expensive infrastructure.

CP PLUS, the Global Leader in advanced surveillance and security systems and solutions, has unveiled its new TVC for the first time to reiterate its indubitable position in the security domain. The ad throws focus on the wide range of security solutions that the brand offers in the realm of video surveillance to suit versatile purposes and various environments. It emphasises on the powerful all-seeing feature of its best-inclass video surveillance solutions with the core communication ‘Uparwala Sab Dekh Raha Hai.”

Sudhindra Holla, Country Manager, Axis Communications, India & SAARC

May 2015 www.asindia.in

Axis Q6000-E is especially suited for city surveillance where there is a need for both a Pan-Tilt-Zoom camera to provide detail, and for a full overview camera to cover the entire area. The AXIS Q6000-E Network Camera is an innovative outdoor ready network camera offering a 360° overview provided by four 2 megapixel camera heads. The products are based on open systems, which means that they can be easily integrated into other security solutions and that software from partners can be added. 20

The Lawrence Police Department needed to be able to see multiple locations on one interface and they needed to be able to share logins with several different people. We turned to the cloud-managed Eagle Eye Security Camera VMS because it was extremely easy to deploy and provided secure remote access. The high-quality images we get can then be retrieved via a smartphone, tablet, or web browser.

Research and development has always been a highly prioritized area in order to maintain Axis’ market-leading position and this award stands testimony to that fact. With a high rate of innovation within a number of different areas, Axis has continued to advance the network video products in order to add value for the end customers and differentiate the products in the market. We dedicate a significant amount of our total revenue towards R & D year on year and have developed a broad knowledge base through many years’ experience building a high level of expertise within network video. About 350 engineers are dedicated to develop the technology platforms and products of the future.

Dennis Bouchard, Director Operations, East Coast Security

When the Lawrence Police Department noticed that the city’s unlawful activity periodically changed locations rather than remain rooted in a fixed area, they decided that a mobile unit would be the most efficient and cost-effective solution to ensure safety. The van is parked in “trouble spots” throughout the city; officers at the police station use the video feeds as a tool to monitor activity, as do patrol cars in the vicinity of where the van is parked.

This ad which is the first in a series is pegged to drive home the point that security is required everywhere- whether home, office, public place or an educational institute. As the market leader with No. 1 market share in India, we are keen on reaching out to the masses with our extensive range of products to ensure security they can trust and rely upon at affordable price points. We want to reassure them that even an HD video camera can be bought within their budget!

Aditya Khemka, Managing Director, CP PLUS India The TVC is created by Dentsu to showcase the discreet yet fly-on-the-wall surveillance that CP Plus video cameras can offer in a college so that miscreants can be detected easily. It begins with a group of freshers being confronted with a senior bunch of students in a college corridor. The seniors start ragging the new kids on the block by asking where they are from. When they find out that they are from Delhi, they ask the young boys to become the Qutub Minar. This is followed by the freshers climbing on top of each other to form a human pillar of sorts, albeit gingerly and with full chances of toppling over.

A

s organizations of all sizes face an increasing volume of cyber attacks that place sensitive data, company assets and intellectual property at risk, Cisco has announced new models of Cisco ASA with FirePOWER Services, the industry’s first threat-focused next-generation firewall (NGFW) -- providing midsize companies, branch offices and industrial environments with the same advanced malware protection and threat detection capabilities deployed by large enterprise organizations.

Hacking is a sophisticated business, and as the attackers become even more profit-driven, midsize businesses, branch offices and industrial environments are increasingly in their crosshairs. As organizations work to protect themselves and their partners, they require security solutions that combine sophistication and simplicity, while also offering low TCO. The new models of Cisco ASA with FirePOWER Services address that exact need with advanced threat protection capabilities along with easier management and cost savings that improve an organization’s security efforts – before, during and after an attack.

David Goeckeler, Senior Vice President, Cisco Security Business Group

According to a recent PwC study, security compromises at midsize organizations increased 64% in 2014. They face the same challenges as enterprises when it comes to securing their network and data, but often rely on legacy and outdated security platforms that fail to provide protection before, during and after an attack. Attackers are finding distributed sites and industrialized locations to be attractive targets because they are often viewed as easier entry points to access sensitive information and data either at the remote location or on the corporate network.

Zebion Launches Intrusion Alert Systems Designed to Intercept Burglars in the Act

P

une based Electronics Company, Zebion, has launched a contemporary range of intrusion alert devices named Argoz, suitable for Homes, Offices and Warehouses. These devices have an instant notification facility as soon as unauthorized trespass occurs, either by dialling out to the owner’s mobile number or through a smart APP. The dial out can be followed by an SMS and the owner can nominate secondary, tertiary or more numbers in case the primary contact number is unavailable.

With the incidence of break-in and thievery on the rise in virtually every setting (residential and commercial) Argoz opens a new chapter in society’s fight against crime.

Cisco Expands ASA With FirePOWER Services Portfolio

Yogesh Dagale, Director and CEO, Zebion

The Argoz intrusion detection system can have an attached hooter or siren. However many would prefer not to startle the burglar, but rather engage law enforcements authorities instantly to nab the culprit while still in the act. Another Zebion Director, Abhishek Lodha, added “Argoz instantly relays information about a break-in at the very moment the crime occurs. This empowers the property owner to exercise the best option available. While the most obvious reaction could be to inform the police, one could also inform friends, neighbours or the society office.” For years, citizens and law enforcers have felt that CCTV systems alone were insufficient when trying to ensure holistic security of a premises or prevent crime. While CCTV remains essential, and in some cases indispensable, their primary function is to facilitate postincident analysis, not crime prevention. As Saurabh Dey, Zebion’s CMO, explained “Argoz and CCTV are complementary products, and they work synergistically.” 31

How to Reduce the

Cost of Gas Detection with the Right Solution

It is important to find a right solution from different solutions for cutting down the cost of gas detection.

Submitted by Honeywell Industrial Safety

C

ompetition in the global market place has helped to drive down the cost of gas detection, and means that today’s customers have access to a myriad of differing solutions. The down side of more choice is the fact that there are more options, specifications and features to consider so it’s even more important to spend time evaluating possible solutions within the context of the applications you plan to use them. Functionality and the difference between “smart technology” and a “smart solution”

May 2015

When it comes to gas detection, there are two kinds of “smart”; a device that uses in-built intelligence such as a detector using firmware to help deliver enhanced diagnostic data and a device that delivers a “smart way of operating” even though it may be less “cutting-edge” in terms of the technology it employs to get the job done.

www.asindia.in

A good example of how these aspects differ can be illustrated by the following portable gas detection examples. The Impact range of multi-gas detectors from 32

Honeywell Analytics uses automatically r e c o g n i s e d plug and play, precalibrated sensor cartridges (for the detection of up to four gases). These smart cartridges include all alarm settings and calibration data enabling them to be swapped out easily and quickly, making for simplified ongoing maintenance. This cartridge design is a good example of how in-built technology and software can be utilised to deliver a smart end result. BW Technologies by Honeywell’s portable gas detectors, including Gas Alert Micro Clip XT, feature “IntelliFlash” technology, an LED driven visual indication that highlights device compliance to site standards (when a device is not being bump tested in line with pre-defined site standards, the LED will not flash green). Although the use of an LED is not in itself revolutionary, the end result delivered by IntelliFlash is; it provides an easily accessible cue to safety managers and users alike, that makes non-compliant devices easier to

spot a n d helps to promote adherence to site standards, enhancing on site safety. These polar examples show the difference between smart technology and a smart result, highlighting the fact that it is not just state-of-the-art technology that has the power to deliver true value and reduce ongoing costs.

REDUCE THE TIME; REDUCE THE COST Any aspect that helps you save time – whether it relates to ease of use and training or simplified ongoing maintenance – has the potential to save you money. Reducing your labour spend (even by just a few

minutes), is one way to dramatically reduce ongoing costs over time, as the following examples highlight. Honeywell Analytics’ Sensepoint XCD (which includes a standard model, a remote toxic version and a remote flammable version), features a tri-colour display that clearly indicates the unit’s status at a glance – even from a distance; steady green for normal operation, flashing yellow to indicate a warning/fault status and flashing red to indicate an alarm status. Sensepoint XCD is in fact the only model to provide a full colour-illuminated screen that is easily seen from a distance. An example of the cash saving potential of this attribute can be illustrated by the following example: Consider a plant set up, where a series of devices are monitoring for gas hazards and are feeding back information to a PLC. If a hazard occurs, the maintenance engineer must enter the area, and find the unit that has gone into warning/fault. If the plant is large with many points of detection, this can take some time. In the case of Sensepoint XCD, the device in warning/ fault will be clearly visible by its bright flashing screen, meaning that the engineer can get straight to the unit. The simplicity of the colour coding means that the device’s status is instantly identifiable with

a simple glance. This can be the difference between an engineer needing to spend 1 hour to locate and access the device or as little time as 10-30 minutes. A time saving does not need to be as large as the example above. The following hypothetical example shows the true value of what can be achieved by shaving off as little as just two minutes carrying out a repeatable activity. Consider a site that has 100 gas detectors; if each unit takes 10 mins to check and re-calibrate, the time required to complete this activity would be just over a day (1.04 days) based on a day consisting of two 8hr shifts / 960 mins. Compare this with an identical plant that has 100 gas detectors that only require 8 mins per device to check and calibrate and this activity would take under a day (0.83 days), meaning that the total time taken could be reduced by 21% by saving just two minutes per device. When it comes to reducing costs an intuitive, simple to use and familiar platform can help you save money on training. A device like the XNX Universal Transmitter, from Honeywell Analytics, can be configured to accept inputs from any of Honeywell Analytics’ gas detectors - even when different types of detection

principles are employed. This means that users only need to be trained on one single transmitter device for all gas detectors on site. When you consider the cost associated with training fees (which can be in excess of 2000€ per day), coupled with additional travel and labour cover expenses, this can provide thousands of pounds worth of savings in a relatively short amount of time.

MINIMISING NEGATIVE IMPACTS TO PRODUCTION Production loss can be very costly and a prime consideration when selecting gas detection is implementing stable solutions that minimise the chances of nuisance alarms, warnings or faults that could negatively affect daily yield. Devices like Sensepoint XCD are also able to limit the chance of incorrect set up and calibration – which can lead to nuisance alarms – and this helps to maximise device uptime. Valuable aspects indeed, considering that just one nuisance alarm can cost thousands of Euros in lost revenue. The same can be said of BW Technologies by Honeywell’s range of portable gas detectors, which can be used with the MicroDock II test and docking station for automatic, one button bump test and auto device calibration, helping to negate operator error which could lead to incorrect device settings.

ENHANCED DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS: WHY IT’S GOOD TO TALK It’s no wonder digital communications protocols like HART are becoming ever more popular; HART’s digital signal can be superimposed on an existing analogue 4-20mA wiring topology. This means that the user can enjoy all the benefits of HART communication – which includes aspects like accessing live data, status and diagnostic information from intelligent field devices - with potentially no additional infrastructural costs. HART can help sites save on long term costs by facilitating proactive maintenance rather than reactive. The ability to gain device information from anywhere in the loop also means that field engineers don’t need to take a trip into the field; they can know the scope of work required before they

33

go, allowing them to plan maintenance in advance, for added efficiency. The XNX Universal Transmitter from Honeywell Analytics includes a HART output as standard, providing users with enhanced device communications capabilities.

PORTABLE FLEET MAINTENANCE MADE EASY Portable device care is now potentially more intensive, following best practice guidance regarding daily bump testing. By automating necessary activities such as bump testing and data logging, businesses can dramatically reduce the time spent maintaining their portable fleets. This has led to the emergence of automatic test and docking stations like MicroDockII from BW Technologies by Honeywell. MicroDock II is compatible with all BW Technologies by Honeywell’s range of portable gas detectors. A device is simply clicked into the docking station, and the user has the option of carrying out three tasks; performing a bump test; carrying out a data transfer or performing a calibration. Each of these activities can be carried out with a single button press and are completed in just a few moments. Test gas levels are controlled and minimal training

May 2015 www.asindia.in

34

is required to use the device, reducing the time spent testing and ensuring the portable unit is ready to detect gas effectively. Aside from creating a simple, minimal training solution, MicroDock II can also help to reduce operational costs in a number of ways; for example, a portable unit may be being tested as much as once a day. A manual bump test could take 5 minutes to complete compared with just two minutes using MicroDock II, equating to a time saving of 12 hrs over a year. At a site where 100 workers bump test their devices once per day, this 60% time saving expands up to 1,200-hours saved in total, per year. This example highlights the fact that small daily time efficiencies can equate to considerable savings over time. MicroDock II’s data logging capabilities also mean that data relating to portable testing can be stored and analysed; the device will keep records of the instruments that were tested, highlighting noncompliant users and allowing the fleet manager greater visibility of device status. When combined with its accompanying Fleet Manager II software,

MicroDock II adds additional dimensions of value. For example, a store manager can cut the time spent issuing a new portable device to an operator from about half an hour to just five minutes – with no paper trail or forms to be filled out. The automatic generation of paperwork such as fleet status reports and calibration certificates can also be produced with devices like MicroDock II combined with Fleet Manager II software. Logged data can be easily converted into a variety of reports by using the intuitive software interface and a PC.

A CASE-BY-CASE APPROACH Local factors and individual plant set up will have a massive impact on whether one device is more suitable than another in terms of providing a cash saving. In reality, there is a plethora of factors that can influence the selection of gas detection solutions capable of reducing the ongoing cost of gas detection. It’s important to work with a supplier who can provide multiple technologies and specification variance, as this will enable them to give impartial guidance on choosing the right solution that is truly fit for purpose, based on your individual needs.

New Stratagems for Security in

Hospitality

May 2015 www.asindia.in

Today the security has become the epicenter of Hospitality ecosystem. The drastic change in security culture is now visible in the hospitality Industry. The hotel security is much better equipped now with new technologies and innovative security solutions. Security services are now provided through well trained staff. The lessons of the 26/11 terrorist attack should not be forgotten at any cost. It changed the perception of the hospitality sector regarding their vulnerability to such attacks and security incidents. It’s time to prevent terror attacks or security breach with the help of security innovations. a&s India spoke to some of the leading experts to know the latest security innovations for hospitality sector.

By Anant Joshi, a&s INDIA

T

he hospitality sector is taking stock of risk and vulnerability. There is a big change in perception about security. In a stark contrast to past, now new investment in security is seen as a smart move. This is indeed a positive sign for the System Integrators and Security Industry. “Post 26/11, most of the hotels have identified the importance of security systems and are looking at security more as a long term investment perspective. Hotel industry has made it mandatory to install security systems after 26/11. Customers are now concerned about the systems performance rather than just use as compliance. Customers prefer going in for integrated security management platform where CCTV, Access, Intrusion are integrated under one platform for central control with regional autonomy,” observed Atulya Chandra, General Manager, Honeywell Security Group, Asia Pacific Region. According to Ashish Dhakan, CEO & MD, Prama Hikvision, ”Hotel security in India is 37

much tighter today. A visit to the Taj Mahal Hotel will make you conscious that the hotel has become a fortress. The 26/11 terrorist attack when 166 people were killed in the twin attacks on the Taj Mahal Hotel and Trident Oberoi in Mumbai, have changed the perception of the hospitality sector regarding their vulnerability to such attacks and security incidents. The 26/11 incident did push them to look more carefully at the security aspects in the design.” He further added, “The actions taken by the hospitality sector post 26/11 were more of knee-jerk reactions. Installing security surveillance systems is not enough. Installing effective security surveillance systems coupled with creating awareness among the hotel staff by way of intensive training is what is needed. Some of the hotels try to cut corners by installing fewer cameras than what is required. Much less attention is paid towards minor details like position of the cameras, the capturing and storage of images, training, retrieval of images, capturing moving objects with excellent precision and installing cameras in common areas like lobbies and reception.”

May 2015

“Though both Taj and Oberoi Trident have taken stringent measures to restore their premises and beef up the security, the same cannot be said about the others in the hospitality sector in India. Fire safety and security surveillance must go beyond the need to ‘comply’ and get a “No-objection” certificate from the fire department or the municipal authorities,” informed Ashish Dhakan.

www.asindia.in

“Worse is the fact that hospitality sector does not believe in regular annual maintenance contracts with the service providers. At the end of the day everything boils down to cost. The hotel authorities will remember the service providers only 38

when there is a problem; when it comes to safety and security their primary intent is to save costs,” observed Ashish Dhakan. “The 26/11 Hotel Taj attack was an eye opener for the surveillance industry and it triggered a complete review and subsequent overhaul of the security guidelines, practices and change in the overall perspective for the Hospitality sector,” observed Yogesh B. Dutta, COO, Aditya Infotech. He further added, “Hotels are assumed as soft targets by terrorists. The possibility of casualties and thin security perimeter makes hotels vulnerable. Other factors - large crowds, easy access and ability to mix with guests arriving and leaving, in-transit bags and parcels, further make them prone to attacks. So, the challenges for the hotel management to protect guests, staff, and physical assets, are manifold.” “To overcome the challenges, hotels are taking serious measures, for example, restricting the access to designated areas such as control rooms, installation of HD intelligent video surveillance, electric station, fire system, sustained training to the employees to take precautionary measures, and comply with the set procedures, verifying the visitor’s credentials wherever they feel suspicious,” suggested Yogesh B. Dutta. According to Ashish Khare, General Manager, SI

Solutions, SIMS, GIS, Wipro, “The hospitality industry has yet to recover from the events of 9/11. Since that tragic day, the revenues of the major hotel operating companies have declined sharply, reason is people fear. Most of the big hotels hired security experts and invested money on security but not sufficient. These Hotels installed gate access security and CCTV which is not sufficient to encounter attacks. Some intelligent systems along with local police coordination is required…e g. facial recognition along with NCRB database integration. At the same time small hotels have fund issues to put much security equipment.”

1

Hotels today are recognizing the threat posed to them and are much more receptive and all major hotels have deployed or are upgrading their security systems. Although IP is popular but cost plays a major role while selection of system. Most properties are upgrading “T&A only” systems to centralized access control platform for better alarm handling and central reporting. There are various innovations that can help a property stand out and be a safe destination for its customers. Seamless integration between Video surveillance, access control, fire and intrusion can help better control and monitor the security space.

Atulya Chandra, General Manager,

Honeywell Security Group – Asia Pacific Region

“Recent attacks on hotels across the globe have turned the Industry’s focus again on security issues. Hotels must foster a safe, secure environment for its guests and employees to ensure a better, safer guest experience. Inadequate security has repercussions beyond guests losing belongings, theft and employee carelessness; it could become an easy target for criminal acts of third parties, hence, it’s important to monitor all key areas of the hotel to ensure complete safety for its customers and employees,” observed Sudhindra Holla, Country Manager, Axis Communications, India & SAARC. He further added, “After some of the terror attacks in the past few years, the implementation of surveillance has become mandatory in the hospitality industry. And there are a variety of security/surveillance options to choose from - Modern hotels go for modern security hardware while the general hotels opt for more basic ones, but, it’s good to see hotels upping their security quotients to keep crimes and terror at bay.”

Khwaja Saifuddin, Senior Director - South Asia, Middle East and Africa, WD

“Hotels often look for 24/7 surveillance and monitoring system that would provide security and safety and minimize pilferage. At the same time, the cameras are required to be discreet and unobtrusive, in order to maintain aesthetics and to ensure that the guests’ comfort and privacy is not compromised. They also look for products which enable higher image quality and provide 360° view at places especially like corridors, lobby and parking areas to enable remote monitoring and tracking any unusual activity,” suggested Sudhindra Holla. 39

According to Khwaja Saifuddin, Senior Director - South Asia, Middle East and Africa, WD, “An increase in the number of inbound and domestic tourists in India has led the hospitality industry to grow and prosper at a rapid pace. Reports suggest that the Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in India exceeded 7.7 million in calendar year 2014. The importance of this staggering figure can be gauged from the fact that these FTAs generated more than USD 19 billion in Foreign Exchange Earnings. Hence, it is extremely important to ensure that hotels and guesthouses are able to provide a secure stay to their patrons. Terrorist attacks and crimes have definitely led the hotels to adopt surveillance measures at an encouraging rate. However, at the same time it is important to note that a lot of these measures have been adopted by larger hotel chains or hotels with sizeable capacities. However, even the smallest of hotels, guest houses and facilities that are often availed by budget tourists should be able to secure their premises. It is only then that we can call India’s hospitality industry truly safe and secure.”

According to Manoj Khadkikar, Head, Channels Group and Solutions, Zicom Electronic Security systems, “Although nobody can ensure fool-proof safety and security even in developed countries hotels across India have beefed up their security systems to meet any eventuality, in the aftermath of 26//11 /2008. Guests see and experience the up gradation of security levels in all areas such as lobbies, restaurants, swimming pools, banquet halls, business centers, stairways etc. Hence today’s guests feel a lot more safe and secure because of the genuine realization on the part of hoteliers to take no chance in ensuring the safety and security of their customers. Customers also feel satisfied that the hotels are looking after their safety when the hotel spend considerable amount on the security front. Even the genuine customers have to go through stringent security protocol.”

According to Ashwin Amarapur, “Safety and Security plays a very critical role in Hospitality sector, - even more critical compared to other industries. A glitch in security system of a hotel may have equal consequence in terms of human and property loss, however, the impact is more far-reaching as such incidences are discussed internationally. The 26/11 terror strikes are remembered more for the attacks in the two Mumbai hotels even though there were ten other attacks during those four dreadful days.”

He further added, “At the wake of increased terrorist infestation and multitude of terror tactics involving suicide bombings and clandestine armed teams’ infiltrations, traditional security design may not be able to tackle unforeseen scenarios. 40

Hotel security in India is much tighter today. The 26/11 incident did push them to look more carefully at the security aspects in the design.

Ashish P. Dhakan, CEO & MD, Prama Hikvision

“Hotel itself means nurturing guests without missing the opportunity of greeting them. Recent terror attacks on large hotels have created the need of hi-tech security systems in this sector. Hotel industry has expanded with implementation of new inventions which have raised expectation of customers, in turn have increased the level of industry standards. Brand image of hotels depend on how customers are treated and how the security and safety issues are addressed. Huge investments are involved in hotels therefore safety, security of resources and customers is very essential,” observed Jimmy Bhavsar, Sr. Marketing Engineer, Time-Attendance and Access Control Solutions, Matrix Comsec.

Security systems should be strengthened by integrating IT and newer security technologies with it. With time, of course, safety & security has witnessed more and more automation, with IP cameras and network video surveillance being a minimum standard now-a-days. Hospitality sector has invariably implemented them. However, true automation doesn’t mean mere machines – to be handled by men behind them. That has become the premise for video analytics to take surveillance to new heights and greater levels of automation.”

stand out and be a safe destination for its customers. Seamless integration between Video surveillance, access control, fire and intrusion can help better control and monitor the security space.” “Hotels can try hands on Intelligent Video Analytics and use latest features such as face recognition where visitors face is compared with database of criminals. Hotels near airports can install Glass Break detectors at windows in each room In-order to detect glass break and gun-shot incidences. Beam sensors can be installed on the perimeter walls of hotel to prevent any intruder activities,” suggested Atulya Chandra.

TIME FOR INNOVATION “Hotels today are recognizing the threat posed to them and are much more receptive and all major hotels have deployed or are upgrading their security systems. Although IP is popular but cost plays a major role while selection of system. Most properties are upgrading “T&A only” systems to centralized access control platform for better alarm handling and central reporting,” suggested Atulya Chandra. He further added, “There are various innovations that can help a property

Outdoor Areas of Importance: The pool side area needs clarity and a wide angle, the parking lot needs ability to view tremendous detail – such as license plate numbers; while both entrances require high-level of resolution to see who is entering or leaving. Loitering in restricted areas also needs to be monitored with 360 degree coverage of the vicinity. According to Yogesh B. Dutta, “Hotels can install surveillance cameras designed for specific purposes-tracking movement, night activities, perimeter, exits, and parking lots among others. Further, tracking vehicular movement, visitor’s behavior, activities, loitering and prowling, etc. can help a lot and provides a boost to visitor’s confidence. The new age video surveillance cameras have intelligence and can provide video analytics, motion detection, scheduled recording and send email/ sms notifications.” He further added, “The deployment of Fisheye can help tracking parking areas, lobbies, elevator banks, corridor intersections and meeting halls where coverage of a wide area can be achieved using a single camera. However, hotel security should not be complacent and should constantly endeavor to capitalize on technology innovation and update their surveillance system accordingly.”

According to Santosh Pillai, Director & CTO, 2020 Imaging, “Hotels are viewed as soft targets by terrorists. The slender security perimeter makes hotels an easy access point for terror activities. Large crowds, easy access, ability to blend in with guests, incoming bags and parcels, all add to the slenderness. It was only after 26/11 that security and safety of hotels came under strict scrutiny in India, with the latest being the IP systems push by the government for hotels. There has been a lot done over the last decade, but hotels can still to do a lot to revamp their security system to keep people and property safe.”

According to Ashish P. Dhakan, “There are three major areas of concern, which requires specific solutions.” Reception Desk: It is deemed that high-priority areas in the lobby – particularly the reception desk – may require an increased level of resolution. Also due to bright lighting conditions and direct sunlight at the entrance, high light compensation and WDR features are needed to capture the face clarity at the entry and exit points.

According Sudhindra Holla, “Security has always been a key issue for hoteliers, and technology plays an important part in meeting today’s security requirements. Security Innovation helps hotels stay upto-date and work with technologies that could minimize human efforts greatly, apart from others like, thermal imaging cameras that see through smoke, night vision technology which works in little and almost no light, weather-proof technology that helps cameras work in all kinds of extreme weather conditions. Then, there are analytics applications such as video motion detection and cross-line detection used to trigger specific actions to improve surveillance system efficiency and facilitate investigation.

to alert operators of suspicious activities.

Some of the recently launched products that can be installed in the hospitality industry are listed below: Video analytics: Video motion detection is the foundation for a large number of more advanced video analytics, such as people counting, digital fences, and object tracking.

Zipstream technology: Optimized for video surveillance, Axis’ Zipstream technology is a radically more efficient H.264 implementation, lowering bandwidth and storage requirements by an average 50% or more for many common 24/7 surveillance use cases.

Audio Analytics: The application detects noise – such as the breaking of a window or voices – and uses this as a trigger to transmit and record video, or

Lighfinder Technology: Cameras with Axis’ Lightfinder technology have extreme light sensitivity. Such cameras can deliver color images in as little light as 0.18 lux or lower.

The hospitality industry has yet to recover from the events of 9/11. At the same time small hotels have fund issues to put much security equipment.

According to Ashish Khare, “The prime requirement is to put following security equipments at strategic points in a hotel.” • Gate security- boom barrier, UVSS, CCTV, bollards/gate blocker. • IP CCTV- along with connectivity with local/central police criminal records. • X-ray baggage and body scanning devices. • Analytics o To find the frequent visits of a suspected person at different hotel at different location. o Cross verify the identity of a person from different govt. bodies, in case hotel staff suspects some their guest.

not get over with a simple installation. Hotels need to ensure that they regularly service and upgrade their products to suit their needs. For instance, when installing CCTV cameras, a hotel needs to consider the fact that the HDDs deployed would be working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • Switch to IP based Access Control: Traditional access control solution with controller and reader type architecture needs a lot of wiring

and hence reliability of the solution decreases. Additionally, it offers fixed configuration which limits flexibility of the expansion. Today hotels are moving towards IP based access control solution due to flexibility of expansions, more reliability and easy deployment and use. • Biometric instead of RFID: In the past few years, there has been a vast improvement in technologies related to the biometric due to high end security and ease of use it offers compared to traditional RFID. Today fingerprint technology is more popular among others but slowly hotel shave started accepting palm vein, facial, retina due to

its ease of use and being contactless. • Integration is the Key: Today hotels are using various devices like access control, time-attendance, and video surveillance, fire alarm etc in their premises. Maintaining all these devices separately is a herculean task for the admin/security people. Due to this, they are moving towards more integrated solution whereby all solutions work together seamlessly e.g. door should open in case of any fire, capture a photo for any unauthorized entry etc. • Central Management of Multiple Locations: Central management of multiple sites can be done with or without a server. Monitoring 120 cameras centrally without a server can be done with the Cascading feature which offers monitoring on a TV. Also offered is the Video Surveillance Management Software which allows addition of 1,00,000 cameras, 1000 devices and 1000 simultaneous users to login. These solutions justify the need for central monitoring and management. • Various Alert Modes for Quick Actions: Send SMS/Email notifications to the users in case of events like Motion Detection, Camera Tamper, and Video Loss due to which prompt actions can be taken to avoid drastic incidents. Calling directly from the Mobile Application can be done which allows saving time in tracking the responsible personnel. According to Manoj khadkikar, “A number of security innovations has been taken by particularly by the five star and four star hotels across the country to 43

improve security. They include under vehicle surveillance, baggage checking at the entrance, passport checking, credit card and PAN verifications, room surveillance etc.” He further added, “The security requirements for the hospitality sector are a bit different from other industry. In the hospitality arena security is on several layers like tier one, two, three, four, five and so forth depending upon the needs. Tier one may involve the perimeter, tier two the entrance check points, tier three the lobby etc. So, the hotels should ensure that Admin & Commercial sections are not open to guests and gymnasium and swimming pool are barred for visitors. So, every section in a hotel requires security that should appear non intrusive to customers’ privacy and at the same time provide utmost security to safeguard them and their belongings during their stay.” “Other measures that can improve the security include designing security programs to increase awareness level among tourists, creating strategies to protect assets, property and personnel, developing partnership with Government agencies to prevent crime; developing and implement Tourism security plan to ensure safety of people and properties, responding to crisis and disaster and handling disaster tactfully and implementing communication

According to Ashwin Amarapur, “The outermost layer of security for a hotel is the perimeter of its premise protected by deterrence such as walls, barriers and even security cameras. However, these mechanisms would, at best, intimidate or delay the attackers. Hence, there is a need for real-time detection and real-time immediate assessment of the threat.” He further added, “Video analytics works on the streamed video from the surveillance cameras, analyses the frames and scenes, detects and tracks objects – providing immediate alert on any pre-defined rule violation. Features such as Tripwire, Trespass can detect crossing over a virtual line or entry into a demarcated area by any person, vehicle or even smaller object. Smart Auto PTZ feature tracks objects on its own on such rule violations. And in PTZ Handoff feature one PTZ camera is associated with multiple fixed cameras along the periphery. Any rule violation detected by any of those fixed cameras would trigger the PTZ camera to take closer view of the violator.” “Video stitching is another video analytics feature that joins videos from different cameras with around 10-15% of overlap to create a single stitched

strategies to increase safety awareness among tourists,” suggested Manoj Khadkikar.

panoramic view. This helps in enhanced monitoring – be it manual or even when you apply object tracking or other video analytic features on the stitched output. Hotels can stitch the views for up to eight of their peripheral cameras to have a complete awareness of what’s happening around its boundaries,” informed Ashwin Amarpur. He further added, “Lighting had been a critical aspect in video surveillance. Advent of WDR cameras and IR cameras with night-vision capabilities, that challenge has been overcome. AllGoVision’s intrusion detection features work with perfection even at night, thanks to these advanced cameras.” “Process of security check at the Entry gate is strengthened with Under Vehicle Scanning System (UVSS) and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). While UVSS helps in comprehensive check for presence of foreign objects underneath the cars entering hotel premises, it helps improve cycle time for the erstwhile cumbersome process traditionally done by men holding UVSMs (Under Vehicle Search Mirrors) and taking more time providing lesser accuracy. ANPR recognizes the characters optically from snapshots of vehicle number plates captured by the security camera,” said Ashwin Amarapur. “Coming to issues of internal safety for the buildings, fire hazard is one of most frequent occurring threat for hotels. Thanks to AllGoVision’s Video Smoke Detection, which detects smoke rapidly in the camera’s field-of-view and sends alarm, we can have early warning against such potential mishaps. In some cases it takes less time to detect smoke compared to conventional Fire & Smoke Detection systems - especially where the smoke takes time to reach to the level of the smoke and fire sensors attached to the ceiling. Early warning even by a few seconds can save Hotels from fire hazards and related infrastructure damage and loss of life. For many hotels, access control systems are pretty much in place for enabling entry restrictions to certain critical areas of the facility. But that’s not a full-proof system. Occasionally, there can be malicious attempt by an intruder following too closely another person

to get access while the door is yet to be fully closed after the authorized person’s entry. Such security lapses can easily be sensed with video analytics tailgating detection, suggested Ashwin Amarapur.

“Ensuring maximum safety of guests and to make their experience more pleasing is of utmost importance to hotels. Technology is making this possible. Today, there are thermal imaging cameras that can see through smoke, there are biometric fingerprint and retina identification systems, there are electronic access room-locking systems. Intelligence from camera has been greatly enhanced through video analytics. there are situational awareness products that integrate cameras that integrate cameras, sensors and other security systems on a single platform, making response to situations quick, effective and efficient. These advancements are surely evolving the security installations in hotels,” informed Santosh Pillai.

SPECIAL INITIATIVES “Some special initiatives that the hotels are taking are installation of CCTV in all public areas, perimeter protection, integration of alarms (fire, gas leak, etc) with CCTV. Restricted access is provided to critical areas like utilities, stores, IT room etc. so that only the authorized personnel can have access to such areas,” opined Atulya Chandra. “Since a large number of bookings are made online, it’s prudent to protect guest’s identities. Though no one is immune to today’s increasing cyber threats, and with thousands of guests checking into hotels each day, hotels have a responsibility to ensure they have access to highly secured network apart from ensuring their physical safety measures,” suggested Yogesh B. Dutta. “Some hotels have already put face recognition camera in coordination with local city police. Example is Delhi Aero city where almost all hotels have face recognition system from different vendors. Cameras has been put in entire aerocity area with all entry/exit gate equipped with UVSS & ANPR system with boom barriers,” informed Ashish Khare. “Hospitality industry is keen to install solutions in every nook and corner of the hotels. The cameras are installed at different locations of the hotels including corridors, parking lots, lobby, lift, main entrance, restau¬rants and bars. They have also been installed in utility areas such as material movement locations, electrical panel rooms and DG power rooms for monitoring, informed Sudhindra Holla.

The outermost layer of security for a hotel is the perimeter of its premise protected by deterrence such as walls, barriers and even security cameras. However, these mechanisms would, at best, intimidate or delay the attackers. Hence, there is a need for real-time detection and real-time immediate assessment of the threat.

Ashwin Amarapur, Director, AllGoVision

He further added, ”Even though the most valuable proposition of video analytics is real time actionable alerts, video surveillance can also be used for keeping records and evidences for future use. But scanning through hours of videos over multiple channels of cameras would make the job tedious as well as tough. Video analytics stores important portions of the proceedings in the form of alarm videos, provides a video summary of all those events, and even searches instances with reference to certain situational information like colour of an object etc. which are stored as video meta data. Video analytics, thus, acts as a deterrent as well as a robust tool for post-facto analysis.”

“Favorable government policies like extending Visa on Arrival to additional countries, and improved air connectivity have led to an inflow of tourists in smaller cities as well. Hence, hotels, even in smaller cities are gradually realizing the close ties between security and development of tourism. This is increasing awareness about security products and measures and India is embracing the same more than ever. One can note metal detectors, body and baggage scanners, and CCTV cameras at almost every place of tourist interest. However, as mentioned earlier, care should be taken to ensure regular servicing and upgrading of these products,” suggested Khwaja Saifuddin. “Hotels are now becoming more conscious about security of hotel assets, staff and its guests. So hotels have started using electronic security 45

According Manoj khadkikar, “Apart from the normal CCTV cameras and patrolling guards with sniffer dogs, nowadays especially post 26/11/ 2008, hotels are strengthening the security cover to all strategic places in and around the hotel premises. These include, Perimeter Fencing, Boom Barriers, Automatic Bollards, Selective Access Control System, Under Vehicle Surveillance System (UVSS), Baggage X Ray Clearance, Metal Detectors, Alarm System, Biometric and Facial Recognition Systems, People Counters, Intrusion Detectors, Bomb Detection Devices etc. There is seamless flow of data from one system to another not only from the security point of view but also from the business perspective. Helpful intrusion is provided as an added service through technological capabilities. Also, security solution providers are offering 5 star hotels security coupled with home automation. That is automatic solution for lighting, air conditioners, television, windows, curtains, etc which facilitate the customer to enjoy luxury and comfort with ease. Some global chains in India are also introducing keyless entry into room by the guest through mobile command.” “We at Zicom are providing many of these security solutions to hospitality industry and the non-occurrence of any major mishap there is a testimony to the efficacy and the empirical values of our security solutions,” informed Manoj Khadkikar.

May 2015 www.asindia.in

According to Ashwin Amarapur, “Use of facial recognition technology is catching up pace in hotel industry in recent times. Faces of people coming in or roaming in the lobby area of the hotel are captured. The faces are matched with a database of registered faces as a white list / black list. Alarms are then generated based on successful match or the lack of it. A terrorist’s file photo kept in the database can lead to on-time alert to the security personnel just when 46

Considering the present scenario, all hotels are now designed to have security solutions. In some cases for installation purpose, some minor changes are made in the infrastructure for considering security. Now a days even the architect suggests a security solution to be installed before the final structure is built. So, while constructing any hotel the provision for security solution setup is initially taken care. In case of hotels where security solutions are not installed the management now feels the urge for security and therefore takes the decision of renovating the building for security purpose.

like fire and security alarm systems, access control systems including card key, locks, safes and biometric systems, CCTV systems to monitor, record and store camera or video surveillance and various devices as well as programs to protect proprietary information of the Hotel and their guests, suggested Jimmy Bhavsar.

Jimmy Bhavsar, Sr. Marketing Engineer, Time-Attendance and Access Control Solutions, Matrix Comsec the terrorist is about to enter the hotel premises. AllGoVision video analytics can recognize a face even when it camouflages with a moustache, beard, a wig or even a spectacle.” He further added, “Lobby management is another important step for a safe and secure hotel. In its lobby, there is a mix of people including the staff, contractors, guests, registered visitors or even unidentified persons with no records. Certain zones are meant for certain type of personnel only. An unrecognized face based on the zonal face database detects inappropriate access of an individual to a restricted area; it alerts your security personnel to initiate prompt action, as required.” “While on one side face recognition can ensure the hotel security, on the other side it increases the effectiveness of hotel information systems. Your VIP customer doesn’t like to come forward on his own and say, “Hello, I’m a VIP” to get that preferential treatment. But you as a tech-savvy hotelier can apply face recognition which automatically alerts you personnel and triggers work processes for en enhanced customer service. An electronic message board can flash a personalized welcome note for your VIP guest visiting you without a prior notice, creating a long lasting impression and adding a new dimension to you customer relationship management, informed Ashwin Amarapur.

He further added, “Tourism and hospitality industry is more susceptible to global epidemics such as SARS, Swine Flu etc. with a potential to facilitate the transmission of disease from one person to another. Contact-free form of access controls powered by face recognition unlike traditional access card or finger print detection based system helps a lot in curbing that menace. At the same time this is more popular due to its less intrusive nature requiring no physical or deliberate interaction. As an enabler for post-event analysis, Face Capture helps keeping records of faces (without any need of recognizing) as evidence for future use. Face forensic search helps tracking the suspect’s movements in recent times through video surveillance points.” “Hotels are now more vigilant and are taking keen interest in implementing security and surveillance measures. Limiting access points, ensuring a perimeter security system, checking guest baggage, having employee verification and visitor management system are some of the initiatives, in addition to having the usual systems such as CCTV surveillance, access control and fire & safety. There is a shift from analog to IP cameras and this is enabling the deployment of technology driven innovative products that ensure guest safety. Hotels are looking to enrich customer experience with video analytics and are adopting operative platforms that provide exciting avenues for enhanced SOP implementations,” concluded Santosh Pillai.

SECURITY DESIGN “The awareness levels of the stakeholders involved in the hotel project is quite high as compared to past. Hence the designs are being made considering the security requirements like boom barrier, baggage scanners, CCTV in hotel lobby and common areas, parking and perimeter protection in mind,” observed Atulya Chandra. “Hotels have started taking whatever it takes to ensure the security their guests including installation of HD video surveillance with in-built intelligence. They are maintaining 24x7 centralized control room to monitor and control the suspicious activities proactively. They have integrated other safety measures with HD video surveillance,” elaborated Yogesh B. Dutta. “Yes, new hotels have security checks from local bodies and putting security systems. But the question mark is operation & maintenance. Some time it is seen that incident video footage is not found because CCTV was not functional due to some technical/nontechnical issues,” opined Ashish Khare.

“Yes, there have been instances where hotels asked for security systems to be installed during the designing and redesigning stage. But there are various factors involved in taking this decision, hotel’s budget and design being the crucial ones,” opined Sudhindra Holla. “Considering the present scenario, all hotels are now designed to have security solutions. In some cases for installation purpose, some minor changes are made in the infrastructure for considering security. Now a days even the architect suggests a security solution to be installed before the final structure is built. So, while constructing any hotel the provision for security solution set-up is initially taken care. In case of hotels where security solutions are not installed the management now feels the urge for security and therefore takes the decision of renovating the building for security purpose,” opined Jimmy Bhavsar. According to Manoj khadkikar, “Many hotels are designing new systems or redesigning or upgrading their existing systems to help improve the security environment. Leading

hospitality properties are using latest technology products to differentiate themselves from their competition and thereby increase market share and improve revenue. Hotels are under such pressure to keep up with expectations of guests that they are implementing new technologies to regain their edge.” “Even smaller hotel brands are turning to technology products to equip their public spaces and guestrooms with the latest electronics. The need to accept innovative technologies to maintain market leadership position is globally recognized in the hospitality industry. Technology investments differentiate hospitality properties, improve the guest experience and create more satisfied customers resulting in increased brand awareness, loyalty and reduced price sensitivity. Consequent upon the changing guest requirements, security demands, and the need to constantly stay ahead, the hospitality companies of all sizes are making innovative technology investments,” informed Manoj Khadkikar. “Hotels and their security designs should be modified time to time to take

latest threats into consideration and be updated with the latest technologies. It’s no surprise that hotel security ranks as one of the top concerns of travellers. When staying in your establishment, your clients should feel as secure and protected as they would in their own homes. Having latest video analytics technology with features for intrusion detection, face recognition etc. inbuilt into your security framework will be an assurance to your guests that your hotel cares about their safety and well-being,” opined Ashwin Amarapur. He further added, “Growing demand along with changing and increasing guest expectation poses new challenges to hoteliers who have to reconcile the necessary short term investment in safety infrastructure and new technologies with their long term business goals of profitability, brand-building and sustainability.”

TRAINING ASPECT According to Atulya Chandra, “Hotels are encouraging employees to take trainings and get them acquainted with latest technology and use them for benefit of guests’. As OEMs several big hotels, hotel chains and small hotels are asking us for providing training to their staff.” “Hotels have released safety and security guidelines and manual for their staff. These manuals clearly define material, people, access control modules and crisis management plans. The staff is imparted thorough training on every module,” said Yogesh B. Dutta.

“Installing security solution in a hotel is just not enough. But, how to use maximum security tool with accuracy is also important. So, the hotel management is also consciously taking care of employee’s training for security. They conduct Initial staff training while installing security solution and provide regular training and recent incident discussion related to security with staff are undertaken. Induction on security precaution at the time of hiring new staff members,” suggested Jimmy Bhavsar. According to Manoj Khadkikar, ”Hotels across India have begun to give regular training to their staff on various aspects of security. They are related to disasters – both man made and nature inflicted. Manmade disasters include fire fighting, controlling and dousing of looming conflagration for which the hotel staff are demonstrated on how to handle a fire extinguisher and act rapidly to control and contain losses. Other trainings such as combating earthquakes, landslides, evacuation due to threat or emergency are also being provided by hotels.” “In fact, hotels invite leading security experts to train their staff periodically so that their guests can benefits from these trainings during the event of any eventuality. Some chains avail of the services of ex-army men and security experts to train their various hotel chains at different locations. Some even organize quarterly or half years security training camps for their staff at their resorts and even encourage guests staying in their hotel to participate in such awareness programs. So the staff in the present day hotels is much more alert as it is equipped with knowledge of

managing a security related problem,” suggested Manoj Khadkikar. According to Ashwin Amarapur, “While threat detection is crucial, the next steps of assessment and response are more important in terms of making a complete cycle of security assurance. The right response and reaction would determine the magnitude of damage prevention. Therefore, in the hospitality sector, conscious and alert employees are the “eyes and ears” of the security framework.” He further added, “Training and response conditioning in security and safety measures become essential for all. Detailed guidelines and emergency procedure are laid out in hotels that care for quality of safety. Following safety procedure as a regular practice and routine checks, safety drills to find out security loopholes are also characteristics for benchmark hotels. Adequate budgets must be earmarked for building safety infrastructure and investment on awareness and training of manpower. An integration of modern technology, physical solutions and well trained manpower is the answer.”

APPLICATION CASE According to Ashish Khare, “Aerocity is good example, which is a compound where multiple multinational hotels are there. This compound is having all entry/ exit gates equipped with UVSS, ANPR, driver image capture cameras with boom barriers. All hotels have their individual IPCCTV camera system and some hotels having face capture solution as well. Vehicle intrusion protection system may also be put to stop terrorist vehicles.”

The network recording and storage provision has brought down the necessity of staff dependency; thereby increasing efficiency while cutting costs. The superior image quality on IP has been acknowledged and appreciated by the hotel’s senior management, which can now monitor the hotel from across the world.”

very organization these days wants to protect its Data throughout Its life cycle. From hours and days to months and years, it’s important to have a tiered storage solution in place. Organizations today are experiencing a data explosion. According to recent research from Enterprise Strategy Group, respondents to the firm’s survey say they are experiencing 11 percent to 30 percent annual growth rates of data, with another 28 percent dealing with annual growth rates of 30 percent or more. With the amount of data created and replicated increasing exponentially, enterprise IT departments are grappling with how to manage, store and protect vast quantities of data. The reasons organizations are collecting and storing more data than ever 50

before is because their businesses depend on it. Some of the key verticals that require specific storage solutions include education, finance, banking, government, Healthcare & life sciences, Media & Entertainment, Science & Engineering etc. With tight budgets, shrinking backup windows, and the constant need for data access, educational institutions around the world require specific storage solutions. Quantum has worked with educational institutions for nearly 30 years, delivering innovative technologies and proven data storage solutions. And whether their storage needs include highly reliable diskbased backup, data management solutions,

LATEST STORAGE TRENDS Some of top technologies in the enterprise storage solutions include Flash that offers tremendous advantages in improving performance (both latency and IOPS) for use cases from VDI to VM convergence to database. Data Awareness, a concept of automatically collecting intelligence about the users and the content they are storing in order to better manage the storage being used is the new trend announced by the industry this year. Enterprise IT buyers are insisting that storage processes must not only be automated – they must also be business-aware, with the ability to link data placement and movement with data source, data type, user or organizational demographics and business process management. Software-defined storage is popular among software startups looking to ease the buying and deployment of their new value-add on customers’ existing hardware. It reintroduces higher integration and support costs for customers at a time when they don’t want to spend money on storage administration, which seems like a 51

Storage is becoming ever more strategic. It’s not just about retaining data for audit purposes. It is about monetizing one’s data. Storage, in many organizations, is moving from a cost of doing business to a source of revenue and profit growth. The amount of data creation continues to grow at an incredible pace requiring ever increasing amounts of storage. Customers are increasingly talking to us about their “petabyte” challenges. Data is being retained longer, sometimes forever. This requires a strategy for minimizing costs and 52

ensuring availability. Overall storage costs are rising when one takes into account all aspects such as hardware, software, real estate, power/cooling, backup. This creates an opportunity to match the value of data with the correct cost of storage. People expect to have access to their data on a wide-range of platforms. And finally, customers are starting to think of their storage as a “workflow”. Data is created, ingested, modified/analyzed/ utilized, shared, and preserved. Quantum is data workflow experts and we consider it a privilege to learn more about our customers’ workflows and how we can help them optimize their workflows for performance, availability, and cost.

WD offers specialized WD Purple line of drives which are specifically meant for 24/7 uninterrupted surveillance requirements.

STORAGE MARKET

www.asindia.in

India is witnessing a storage boom. It is continuously evolving and changing at a rapid pace with old technologies being 54

continuously replaced by newer, more advanced ones. According to a report by IDC, the digital universe in India is nearly doubling in size every two years and will multiply nine-times between 2013 and 2020—from 326 exabytes to 2.8 zeta bytes. IDC also forecasts that by 2020 Internet of Things (IoT) will represent almost 10 per cent of the data generated in India. Due to increasing security measures in every vertical from government to police stations, public transport to hotels, surveillance storage systems contribute substantially to data generation as well. Moreover, India is witnessing major improvements in economic policies, infrastructure and education leading to an increased acceptance and adoption of technology at various levels. According to a report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International, the number of Internet users in India is estimated to grow to 354 million by June 2015. This coupled with the present government’s digital outlook is leading to an evolution in the process of creation and consumption of data at both enterprise and personal levels. While there is a visible data explosion in the urban areas, it is the smaller cities and towns that are surpassing expectations by rapidly embracing new technology. The report by the IAMAI and IMRB International notes an increase of 39 per cent over 2013 in the number of internet users in rural India. The number touched 101 million in October 2014 and is expected to be 138 million by June 2015. An increase in access to the internet through multiple platforms has led to an increase in data generation and hence, storage products, enabling the market to grow favourably.

VERTICAL SPECIFIC Data is continuously generated across verticals and hence, there is a growing demand for storage products to safeguard digital content. Different verticals require different storage requirements based

on the amount of data they generate on a daily basis. For example, Banking and Finance would require large amounts of storage due to the documents and records that need to be digitally filed. On the other hand, there are other segments that would primarily require surveillance storage in order to monitor and safeguard their data. WD provides solutions that best cater to the needs of a wide range of audiences. Be it consumers, SMBs, SOHOs, or even enterprises.

INNOVATIONS Changes in consumers’ lifestyles, work and home environments are leading them to demand access to data even outside of their work/ home environment. Hence, 2015 will further popularize the concept of personal cloud storage. Personal cloud solutions allow users to access their date on-the-go so that they are not confined within the walls of their home or workplace. According to GSMA, India is fourth largest market for smartphone users and will soon overtake US as world’s second largest internet market. People are creating and storing content at exponential levels. Thus, storage devices which will suit their lifestyle in terms of high capacity, easy access, backup solutions and mobility will be in huge demand. Storage devices are being developed to cater to the needs of the people and hence customization has increased in popularity. With government initiatives like Digital India and the development of Smart Cities, the demand for storage has increased tremendously. Surveillance has been brought to the foreground. It is picking up at a fast pace as more and more houses have started deploying surveillance cameras at a time where crimes are being reported at an unprecedented speed. In addition, HAMR (Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording), a revolutionary new technology (yet to be commercially launched by WD) has the potential to increase the storage capacity of hard disk drives by multiple times.

Storage Market in India is Witnessing Dynamic Growth The whole storage scenario in India is changing for sure. The enterprise market here is both, large and volatile. The evolution is more in terms of the managing the spike in the level of data consumption. There are so many newer ways to generate data today that the need to store it efficiently becomes important. Another fact to supplement this trend is that the businesses are becoming much more aware about their systems and about the specific products available in the market for their requirements.

Globally Tyco has implemented PSIM projects for critical infrastructure at Airports, Ports and Transportation Systems, and in Corporate Facilities. In fact our brand Proximex is the world leader with its Surveillint range of solutions implemented in hundreds of installations across North America, EMEA and Asia Pacific. With the growing threat of terrorism, there’s a definite need for PSIM in Civil and Defense establishments, in Government and Public Assembly facilities or City Centers. ‘Safe Cities and Smart Cities’ announced by the Government will involve the use of thousands of cameras, intrusion sensors, communication devices and other security 56

equipment like access control, fire protection, over a wide area in hundreds of buildings --- these cities need PSIMs to mitigate security risks, ensure event response processes and track subjects. Tyco is also getting expressions of interest from hospitals and educational institutions with enterprise campus environments.

LATEST INNOVATIONS There are several innovations taking place in the ecosystem. These will, over time, drive up the adoption of PSIM. Evolution of standards which promote interoperability among devices would simplify system integration.

ONVIF and PSIA have been working to enhance the standardization of access control. This would also help protect and future proof investments for the enterprises. Then there are innovations geared towards making systems even more powerful with actionable intelligence, speed security incident resolution. Some examples are features like business logic, escalation to higher ups until remedial action is taken, step by step guidance to deal with the emergency, auto-generated responses , work flow management and multiple client.

COMPETITION Despite decent growth in the last

four or five years, there is lack of awareness about PSIM platforms. Product development costs are large and serve as a barrier. As a result not many new entrants have entered the PSIM market – so overall investments in educating and raising awareness levels have remained low. There’s also competition from VMS --- that is incorrectly positioned as a ‘PSIM for medium and small’ sized facilities. Apart from Tyco, I have come across just a handful of global PSIM vendors in India.

Rajeev Samanta, Regional Sales Director South Asia, Tyco Security Products

GROWTH PROSPECTS Medium to long term growth prospects are good. Depending on the study, experts quote CAGR growths ranging from 20-25% over the next 5 years in APAC region. There are several triggers at work. India, China and Australia are investing heavily in the security of existing or new smart cities. Corporates are seeing the advantages in terms of interoperability of diverse security and other systems including old and new systems with one common PSIM platform. There’s no need to throw away old systems. At Tyco we believe the development of a diversified group of technology partners will further enhance our customers’ ability to obtain actionable intelligence, speed security incident resolution and reduce security operations costs. We were among the first to accept the importance of Industry Standards.

VMS MARKET TREND According to Shirshendu Gupta, Head Marketing, Honeywell security, “The current VMS market is evolving with customers having convergence and integration in mind, hence all large projects / multi-location projects require VMS. Integration with IBMS / energy management, command control centre increases the need for a customized VMS.” He further added, “Requirement of open platform in order to integrate with ONVIF cameras, the kind of mobility options that a VMS can provide and its customization as per the requirements are some of the parameters which are increasing the demand for VMS.”

Shirshendu Gupta,

Head Marketing, Honeywell Security

According to Prakash Prabhu, General Manager - India at Pelco by Schneider Electric, “The Indian Market for VMS is a combination of Hardware NVR based, Bundled solutions ( SW & HW) and Pure play software ( VMS). We will continue to see a healthy growth for the VMS industry in the coming years.” He further added, “For the entry level offerings, there is a growing trend among VMS players to penetrate the hardware requirements by bundling their solutions with HW appliances. NVR’s still hold a good share of the Entry level plug and play requirements.” At the mid and enterprise level, the preference is still with Software based solutions, as it allows for greater flexibility integration with other systems and the rising need for Video Content Analysis ( VCA). The differentiating factor’s for VMS players in the segment is primarily: • Quality of Service. • Handling of new compression standards (H.264 svc / H.265). • Flexibility of integration with third party systems and services. • Support for OPEN standards (ONVIF / PSIA). • Ability to support third party Intelligent Video Analytics and Video Content analysis. • Aggregation features to bring multiple sites / systems in to a common framework. According to Kamesh Ramamoorthy, Board Director , 2020 Imaging, “The VMS market is slowly moving from a device-centric approach to a solution-centric approach. Customers are slowly beginning to realize that an analogbased recording system is not something that they want any more. They want complete control of their operations from a single command centre. VMS space is evolving itself into a command and control solution space that will provide the roadmap and investment protection to customers. The latest trends seem to encourage the VMS players into this evolution, but we need to wait and see the actual market adoption towards this conversion from analog to digital, from digital to network, and from network to command and control.” According to Jill Delaney, Product Marketing, Exacq, Tyco

Security Products,“Exacq Technologies is part of Tyco Security Products business unit of Tyco, the world’s largest pure-play fire protection and security company. With a strong brand presence in USA, Europe, and APAC and as one of the fastest growing VMS brands, Exacq Technologies is uniquely positioned to understand the challenges and opportunities that are emerging.” According to Nidhi NairMarketing Engineer, Video Surveillance Solutions Matrix Comsec, “There is approximately 35% growth per year due to the government help and enterprise understanding the importance of centralized control of security, productivity and discipline. India has highly unique requirements for video surveillance solution which the VMS solves very appropriately. Malicious activities happen in various sectors across India due to which integration of lakhs of cameras to a solution was inevitable, thus there is apparent growth of VMS in India.” According to Rohini Goradia, AVP Marketing & Sales, Hayagriva Software, “Increasing crimes, terror related activities, growing public infrastructure, IT developments, etc. have all given impetus to the exponential growth of the video surveillance industry in India. 6WResearch reports predict this market to grow up to $2.4 billion by 2020. The market is moving from analog based surveillance to IP based surveillance, albeit at a slow rate. Along with hardware, Video Management Systems have also found a crucial role to play in monitoring, remote monitoring more specifically. Sectors like banking and finance, retail, government, commercial, manufacturing, transportation are relying on Video Management Systems for remote monitoring and video analytics to improve their safety and security. According to Rahul Walia, Director, Genius Vision Digital (GVD),“Transformation and Evolution is constant in nature, however it brings lot of change. CCTV market in India has grown with a 20-30% growth rate until the terror attacks and security industry 61

spending surge by 40-50%. VMS is an indispensable part of the security system as CCTV constitutes 55% of the total solution. It makes it even more important & critical that we as part of the industry evolve the product towards a more stable and yet open platform for handling 3rd party integration, Collaboration, Dashboards and Business analysis.” He further added, “When VMS takes control of the integration between other equipment’s like access control, intrusion & Fire and Building management it gives a holistic monitoring capabilities and tangible process improvements & ROI by 60%. I would say the market is evolving if more customer demands and uses a solution which provides a smarter approach to manage the safety & security by enabling new competencies in the offering of the VMS solution that would tackle the identified and new threats & challenges more effectively.”

involved. This has driven VMS providers to build their own suite of applications to support the Front-End VMS,” suggested Prakash Prabhu.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES “Consistent power supply is a basic requirement along with optimum bandwidth which currently is a challenge. Multi channel streaming or mass retrieval becomes an issue in case of bandwidth challenges. Also though the hardware – cameras installed are the HD cameras but streaming or storing high definition images might become an issue in case of non availability of optimum bandwidth. Some of the opportunities that we can envisage are its integration with other systems like analytics, RLVDS, ANPR. VMS benefits like multi operator & Mobility and has several added features like redundancy and disaster recovery, elaborated Shirshendu Gupta.

Rahul Walia,

Director, Genius Vision Digital (GVD)

Kamesh Ramamoorthy, Board Director, 2020 Imaging

May 2015 www.asindia.in

“The move towards standards in the surveillance industry is helping blur the lines between Open and Proprietary software. This provides a lot of opportunity in terms of interoperability of systems. It is now possible to have a single user interface for diverse systems like GPS data / POS data / Alarm interfaces / Access control etc. However with the increased scope of applications, we may also need to look at system Stability security and Quality of Service of such systems, especially when there are multiple third party applications 62

Shakti Leekha,

Sr. General Manager & Head, IBMS, Bajaj Electricals

He further added, “The challenge remains in integrating these systems to achieve the full individual system functionality as open standards do not provide 100% feature performance and availability. Although there is a lot of talks about open systems by software only companies in the VMS space but most of the leading manufacturers have evolved over the period of time to offer the entire basket including Cameras, software, storage hardware etc . Thus trend is coming back to have a complete offer from a single OEM but maintaining the third party integration requirements and conformance to open standards.” According to Nidhi Nair, “The primary challenge is the bandwidth cost involved in IP video surveillance. This creates room for proper modes of streaming for bandwidth optimization and edge storage technology. The secondary challenge that the Indian market faces is the increasing rise in the criminal activities due to which there is a dire need for implementing a video surveillance solution which provides proper modes of real-time notifications to increase security in public areas. Also, there is lack of genuine well-engineered products.” “Security threats are always on the rise, so that continues to be an opportunity to be addressed by VMS companies. However security continues to be a peripheral function that does not get enough attention of business leaders and this is affecting the buying process. While the IP migration is surely providing an impetus to the security revolution, it is more a replacement than a migration, and this faces resistance from customers who have already invested in analog systems. Customers are

wanting to have a common operative picture of their systems, but challenges in terms of integration continue to exist, for there are too many proprietary systems and protocols that exist in the market. Unless, the opportunities and challenges are evaluated holistically, the market will continue to evolve in a pace that may be unattractive for the business world,” said Kamesh Ramamoorthy. Jill Delaney further added, “There are opportunities in high megapixel, analytics, auto discovery of cameras by the recorders and unified clients. Hybrid recorders allow customers to utilize existing analog cameras while also adding new IP camera technology to their surveillance system. Also, quick access to video for investigation using search and analytics tools, as well as collaboration and sharing of these events is in demand. These help to minimize the time it takes for an operator to find an event and lessens the stress on the end user.”

May 2015 www.asindia.in

“In addition, there is a difference between what is in demand and what is actually used. Analytics, mobile support and automation are the most requested features; however, cost or the complexity of the product tends to make them less purchased. The most commonly used features are those that allow users to treat multiple individual components as one large system, as in a unified system, and 64

those that assist in speedy searches of large data pools,” informed Jill Delaney. According to Rohini Goradia following are the opportunities and challenges.

CHALLENGES • • • • •

Setting up of IT infrastructure to monitor large amounts of data, Storage of large amounts of data, Lack of standardization of systems, Time and economic resources spent in training personnel, Video analytics generating incorrect results leading to waste of time and other resources, High quality, robust systems are extremely costly and therefore not affordable to all, High demand for integrated solutions

challenge is global and not pertaining just to Indian market. Challenge is to include and transform more responsibility, include more people, more efficient and safer planet, so is the opportunity to build one. However from the perspective of Indian market, challenge is more towards the reforms that need to be taken for making security available to more people,” informed Rahul Walia. He further added, “India is an import driven market with 60% percent equipment are imported by foreign manufacturers with a custom duty of more than 30% which is the highest in economies like us. Govt. reforms are important for reduction of prices. Another challenge is the unorganized sector which doesn’t want a discourse and still not moving towards an unified solution.”

OPPORTUNITIES •

Making way for better surveillance through opening of command and control centers for remote monitoring, thereby leading to job opportunities, Modernization of redundant incident management processes

“Every Challenge is an opportunity for your higher self and it applies to all the challenges that we get to include more features and capabilities. As we speak there is a research going on for adding more features, including more analytics, more scalable and open platform. The

“Training young professional and using experience from the experts can help us grow more. All you need to ask ourselves how serious are we about security, as it is not about making compromise,” opined Rahul Walia.

KEY INNOVATIONS “The openness of the system and its seamless integration with other security systems and analytics, Access control, Alarm, Integrated building management system (IBMS), ERP, red light violation detection system (RLVDS) are some of the

innovations currently under way,” said Shirshendu Gupta. He further added, “The analytics can be reactive or predictive. The reactive part of analytics is already present which is the post event analysis, but the predictive mode is the latest addition. Here the system based on the recent activity patterns can give the user an indication where a threat can be identified and avoided.” According to Prakash Prabhu, “Major trends that can be seen in the VMS industry are as follows.” • Appliance support. • Video Content Analysis ( VCA) • Compression standards • Support for Multi Megapixel – 4K and above / Multi imager devices. • Support for Panaromic devices • Cloud based VMS and alarm monitoring support. Multi site monitoring and Management. • Embedded Analytic’s. • Mobile Video • Increasing demand for UHD monitors and Video Walls for Industrial and City Surveillance Applications “Remote monitoring and recording becomes very difficult due to the absence of any bandwidth optimization options. Also, the lack of tracking modes in case of any event leads to many loop holes in spite of video surveillance techniques being installed. With these troubles, there were 2 technologies that were developed namely: Edge Storage and Intelligent Video Analytics. Edge storage, allows local storage and retrieval of that stored data from a central location due to which bandwidth can be saved and there can be significant cost reduction. The Intelligent Video Analytics like missing object, intrusion detection, license plate recognition etc. reduce the burden in tracking people who are responsible for the illegal activities,” suggested Nidhi Nair.

“Video analytics is surely an innovation that is being rolled out, because customers are appreciating the idea of “system will watch for you”. Reduction in reaction time is an innovation that is being targeted by VMS providers, but not many have succeeded. Mapping is transforming into geospatial referencing where every device, system and user is being identified with location, and this helps in troubleshooting a situation as well as in responding to an emergency need. Mobile integration is an idea that is being aggressively developed because customers are wanting to more and more access data on-the-go,” informed Kamesh Ramamoorthi.

According to Rohini Goradia, “Smart Video Management Systems have paved way for innovations.”

“Key developments are recording and analytics at the edge. By allowing the camera to do much of the work normally required at the recorder, the customer saves both network throughput and centralized disk storage. Electricals, “The video analytics capability of a surveillance system determines its effectiveness and efficiency. VA, also called intelligent video surveillance, is a technology that uses software to automatically identify specific objects, behaviors or attitudes in video footage (for example, from CCTV systems). There are extensive powerful video analysis methods and tools that are deployed in a number of application domains, including surveillance and security applications. VA like motion detection, trip wires, object removal or abandonment, facial recognition, license plate recognition, etc enables video surveillance to become a proactive monitoring tool that signals the need for immediate intervention by guards, police, or other security personnel.” According Rahul Walia, “In GVD we are working on six different concepts and three different markets. We are working towards more scalability of the solution giving you more licenses & storage on a turnkey machine, high definition recording and video, more reliable system with embedded OS, open platform with more API level integration and transforming the VMS to a total solution. Video analytics like color classification, counter, speeding, License plate recognition, Point of sale,

parking management, Mobile surveillance are some of the key innovations. We are also ready with solutions for transportation giving you a high definition recording on the move.”

LATEST TECH TRENDS According to Shirshendu Gupta, “Some of the latest technical trends currently visible in the VMS segment are as follows.” • Motion based search in particular area and 3D emaps • People tracking and color based search • Color based search • Image enhancements and digital image stabilization • Digital image stabilization • Data mining, Encryption and video summarization • Easy drivers for integration with a third party system / software. “Honeywell’s Honeywell Universal Surveillance (HUS) our flagship IP integration platform which consists of all-inclusive enterprise IP solution management server,” informed Shirshendu Gupta. “VMS systems have to follow the overall trends that are driving the security 66

industry today,” said Prakash Prabhu. The trends seen in the Video Management Space are as follows: • Development work going on new compression technologies like the H.265 , with increase in Megapixel resolution requirements bandwidth and storage is going to be the major challenge for growth of the Megapixel cameras camera sales , hence lot of emphasis is being given on new compression technologies. • Analytics although has been there in the industry but there is more to do with the accuracy and precision that is expected to increase the efficiency expected to be provided using an intelligent video management system. Developers are working hard to balance high compression needs and still maintain the high level of accuracy required for the analytics. • Open stands to integrate third party systems and ONVIF Sand C protocols (for seamless integration with third party security systems, like the access control, intrusion detection, perimeter protection systems, guard tours systems etc ). ONVIF G to ensure the Video stored on the memory card of the camera is downloaded seamlessly once connected to the network in case of network failure. • Lot of emphasis is now given on the User experience , easy navigation, Intuitive Graphical user interface , easy and intelligent search engines . All these efforts are taken to reduce the operational issues in managing the multiple IP cameras and making the whole user experience very user friendly. According to Nidhi Nair, “The latest technological trend is Edge storage. Edge storage gives new dimensions to design flexibility, reliable recording solutions, optimize bandwidth usage, and cost reduction for remote site recording. Edge storage reduces the need an onsite server and elimination of the need video recorder or computer for recorded video, which leads to cost reduction as well as reduction in bandwidth consumption.” “VMS is diversifying itself into a command and control solution integrating security, facility and business management systems. While the security and facility tiers are focused on integrating cameras, sensors, fire, access and building management systems, the business tier is starting to integrate ERP, POS, customer databases and employee records. We are witnessing a convergence of functions,“ informed Kamesh Ramamoorthy. Jill Delaney further added, “Video management system (VMS) software has become increasingly more sophisticated and capable of integrating multiple types of information. Two of the most common trends are tighter integration between VMS and access control platforms and unification

of subsystems. VMS software has grown recently beyond its traditional use of strictly a video security system. VMS from Exacq is compatible with a large number of access control systems, point-of-sale (POS) systems, and retail and video analytics. It is also compatible with more than 1900 IP cameras!” “Compatibility with many third party systems enhances the value of our VMS solutions,” observed Jill Delaney. Some typical examples are given below : • Camera and 3rd party analytics • Access control • POS • Data out: retail conversion rate and heat mapping • Data in: weigh scale at “Fast paced lives causing people to forever be on the move are resulting in monitoring solutions on mobile platforms. One of the newer trends is building userfriendly mobile VMS solutions that enable individual users or security personnel specifically to carry out live monitoring, synchronized playback of multiple cameras, etc. However, it is imperative to mention that this is rather cumbersome, currently, suggested Rohini Goradia.

She further added, “Ease of deployment, efficiency in searching for, aggregating and analyzing video to be used as evidence and reducing costs continue to be crucial features of Video Management Systems; especially with organizations moving towards command and control centers for carrying out operations.” “Research also suggests increasing use of ONVIF protocol standards for better communication between different technologies of different manufacturers is being paid given attention to by VMS manufacturers,” concluded Rohini Goradia. “Trends on VMS are edge based intelligence and VMS moving away from licensing mode to a open source on cloud managed system and taking surveillance as a Service model,” informed Shakti Leekha.

OPEN PLATFORM According to Shirshendu Gupta, “VMS has to be open to get benefit from all OEM edge devices, to get the best from all OEMs. Most of the VMS are based on open standard and Integrations with other OEM security systems becomes easy. The overall industry moving towards openness hence the customer is not tied to one particular OEM and has multiple options for his

requirements.” According to Prakash Prabhu, ”Traditionally, security manufacturers had to address the entire surveillance suite that goes in to any customer installation. This helped to speed up adoption rates as well as reduce errors and delays on site. From a customer standpoint, it helps in getting a better QOS and systems functionality.” He further added, “OPEN platforms addressed the need to add multiple products and devices on the same installation. With HW vendors also choosing to embed their devices with Analytic and video management functionalities, the definition of OPEN solution can be debatable.” “The definition of OPEN and CLOSED platform solutions is definitely getting blurred with the adoption of standards in IP devices. Today most applications offer support to third party devices and applications. All it takes for a VMS or a HW vendor to make their system OPEN is to support the standards,” said Prakash Prabhu. He further informed, “Today most notable surveillance Hardware Manufacturers have built their ability to

manufactured by B.” “Combining different systems under one makes it extremely user friendly for the end user. Another major advantage is that they have the ability of choosing different hardware and software to make one robust, efficient, seamless monitoring system. Costs can also be controlled in such a situation since the user gets to choose a best of breed solution,” observed Rohini Goradia.

provide a End to End OPEN solution to their customers. The spate of M&A’s in the surveillance industry is being driven with the ambition to be a TOTAL SOLUTION provider.” “With the rising scale and complexity of installations, customers would prefer to deal with a single vendor to support their requirements, with the assurance of OPEN technology and support. From a customer standpoint, the technology now has stabilized and become more mature and they would now prefer to deal with an expert who can provide them a solution and not just fill in the boxes,” suggested Prakash Prabhu. “Being ONVIF in the true sense mean that the systems are open, but with limitations. For tighter and stronger integrations between multiple systems, development effort is required with the SDK’s and API ‘s offered by the OEM’s and other system manufacturer’s, opined Prakash Prabhu. “An open standards platform becomes easy to integrate with devices and systems that are built on the same principles. Building intelligence over this integration layer becomes easy too. The integration also helps in getting all the systems on a single window and this naturally builds a level of intuition to the system. Open standards platform inherently becomes scalable to dynamic requirements,” observed Kamesh Ramamoorthy. He further added, “While a closed

platform may have classical advantages of better levels of security, today it does not serve the OEMs any purpose other than restricting the market access, in addition to increasing inefficiencies in terms of more dependencies. Even the security feature is being bettered today by open platforms that are coming up with unbreachable security layers. In short, there is no reason for OEMs to stick to closed platform solution in this open market era.” “Open software can run on multiple hardware platforms with no proprietary hardware necessary. Open platforms allow developers to freely share intellectual property and increase innovation. Typically, open standard products have better market sustainability. Open platform software tend to be easier and inexpensive to expand and update to meet end users growing needs. Whereas, closed platforms rely on the technology provider to ensure long-term functionality. Overall, open platform VMS software offer users flexibility and convenience. Our solutions are on open platforms – that’s one of the important reasons for the popularity of our cross platform VMS software,” opined Jill Delaney. According to Rohini Goradia, “There are several reasons why Open platform Video Management Systems would be more beneficial than Closed Platform solutions. The first being the simplicity of integration between different hardware and software. For example a hardware manufactured by A can be seamlessly integrated with a software system

She further added, “Open source platforms also make systems ‘future proof’ because the user is no longer dependent on the technology of just one company. Advantage can be taken of innovation and technologies of the entire industry therefore systems remain continuously updated.” “Closed source platforms have the advantage of offering better support when technology fails and are more averse to viruses, however they do not offer the advantage of seamless integration like Open source Video Management Systems,” opined Rohini Goradia. “Converging different possibilities is the key to an open platform, closed platform was the stepping stone to a more digital and open platform. Unlearning the primitive technology is a step towards innovation. There is a huge business shift for you as a customer when you move from lack of data to reliable information, from lack of response to increased awareness, from intel to insight, from independent agencies to agency collaboration. An open platform is more innovative, consistent and efficient,” observed Rahul Walia. He further added, “In GVD, we invest more in the development of such interface which is not only open to include multi agency collaboration but also exclude the threats to stability of the system, creating more value by increasing fault tolerance and load balancing. For any enterprise, multi-site, or standalone we keep the same GUI and interface ending up less training, more user friendly, and value for money.”

n beautiful Tuolumne, California, set in the scenic Sierra Foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, sits the Black Oak Casino Resort, owned and operated by the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians. Greeting guests with the traditional native welcome of “M-Chucksus!”, the Black Oak Casino Resort provides 164,000+ square feet of gaming and entertainment options: a conference event center, real and video slot machines, table games, poker, nine restaurants and bars, a bowling center, players club, gift shop, and a kids’ arcade. In addition, the entertainment venue, the Willow Creek Lounge, hosts live entertainment three nights a week. The casino also features the state’s largest smoke-free gaming area. “We aim to offer our guests a resort destination for the whole family,” says Edewaa Ti Foster, the Commissioner and Vice Chair of the Tuolumne Me-Wuk Tribal Gaming Agency. 72

Providing an environment where there are activities for all age levels, protecting the physical safety of its patrons, employees and others in the gaming facility as well safeguarding assets that are associated with the facility is not an easy task. Therefore the type of surveillance security employed at the Black Oak Casino Resort becomes a top priority. “With a property as large as the Black Oak Casino Resort and with so many various activities, keeping an eye on assets and balancing that with creating a safe environment is definitely a challenge,” said Todd Flowers, President of Surveillance Systems Integration (SSI), based out of Roseville, California, the company selected to manage the project. The Black Oak Casino Resort, operating in Tuolumne since 2001, recently decided that it was time to upgrade its existing surveillance system to keep up with the changing needs of its

The primary goals for Black Oak Casino Resort were to switch to high definition cameras, enhance the virtual matrix capability, provide a migration strategy and the equipment to upgrade to a full internet protocol (IP)-based system, and transition in a way that would be easy for the security staff to adopt. The initial project was to be done in phases over a period of 15 months. “We started with replacing the existing standard definition analog cameras with over 400 new high definition (HD) fixed cameras, along with HD, 1080P PTZ dome cameras,” said Flowers. High definition cameras offer security surveillance employees and law enforcement officers superior access and use of video surveillance, with more detail and wider coverage, especially helpful for video review and identification purposes. Although HD images are larger and would

In addition to the new cameras, SSI also removed the existing legacy analog video matrix that provided live video and control of the existing analog pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) cameras and replaced it with the latest Pelco Endura 2.0 Video Management System (VMS). The change was made to allow full virtual matrix capabilities suitable for live surveillance applications (one of the property’s primary goals) as well as leverage the existing analog cameras, wiring, and control in a complete network environment. This upgrade provided a seamless migration to the new system while allowing the security staff to maintain full control on the existing legacy analog cameras; more importantly, it created an expandable platform that would allow the addition of any number of new high definition IP cameras and operator stations without losing the responsive control and reliability of the virtual matrix.

As part of the upgrade, the Black Oak Casino Resort also had to consider how the new IP-based HD video would impact their storage of the surveillance footage. In the phased migration, new Pelco 36 TB network storage managers were installed to replace the legacy network video recorders (NVR). “By replacing the existing storage with a new NSM5200-36 network storage manager, we allowed existing MPEG4 encoded video streams from analog cameras in the system to be recorded on the same platform as the new high definition cameras that stream using the more efficient H.264 protocol. In addition, the inherent distributed architecture of the Endura IP VMS system allowed us to eliminate the potential of

In order to properly deal with the tremendous amount of network traffic on this state-of-the-art IP video system and help the property realize the full potential of their video surveillance equipment, we chose Avaya Fabric Connect technology built on IEEE and IETF SPB protocol. This standards based solution eliminates the complexity and limitations of traditional network offerings, and offered us the flexibility we needed to complete the full virtual matrix and accomplish the goals initially presented to us by the customer.

naturally take more bandwidth, and possibly clog up the IT infrastructure, there have been advancements in the handling of IP-based data streams. Unique data routing protocols and advanced codecs, like H.264, are able to compress the video and audio for transmission with significantly less bandwidth burden.

single points of failure so that the system could operate without interruption. “The NSM5200’s multicast recording capability further streamlined the impact of HD cameras on the IT network,” and allow the recording of multicast data streams,” said Flowers. The surveillance room was upgraded with a new video wall that included 20 46” class LED monitors, three 24” LED monitors and a 70” class LED monitor. The video wall monitors are driven by Pelco NET5402RHD video decoders. Seven operators have a VCD5202 video console display and KBD5000 series keyboard to view live and recorded video at each operator desk. SSI also provided additional video console displays, Endura Workstations and monitors for various personnel outside of the main surveillance room thanks to the upgrade to a full virtual matrix. SSI chose Avaya’s Fabric Connect technology and Virtual Services Platform. Avaya Fabric Connect combines the best of Ethernet and the best of IP technology, which enables the deployment of layer 2 and layer 3 virtualized services with optimized routing and multicast. The solution included a fully redundant 10-gigabit mesh network

connecting the virtual services platforms. This simple-todeploy network provides full system capability and easy future expansion opportunities. “Despite the challenges that we knew the upgrades would present, we were extremely pleased with the advanced awareness of retrofit needs and knowledge of new technologies, not to mention the professional way that SSI exceeded our expectations in their service,” Foster commented. In concluding the current project, Foster had one last thing to say: “We are proud of all the work our surveillance and security staff members do, and we know that technology plays a big part in it. While security surveillance is usually recognized as the dome cameras you see in businesses, these systems go well beyond the walls of the facility and are critical in helping us provide our guests with a safe and consistent experience while they are at our property. It took a “power team” to produce a power system and I am very proud of the end result! Thank you SSI, Pelco, Avaya and our TGA surveillance and surveillance tech teams.”

Pre-existing situation

At the time the state-of-the-art Hilton

Kuwait Resort was built, it was critical that the entire hotel and all of its facilities and areas would meet a high level of privacy and security. One of the most important aspects of modern day security and life safety is the fire detection system. Keeping this in mind, the hotel’s security director tendered the market, looking for a high end fire detection system which would protect their assets, and more importantly their guests and staff to the fullest. SHBC, a local partner in fire detection of UTC Fire & Security, was awarded with this prestigious project due to the quality of its solution and excellent reputation

UTC Fire & Security’s solution

SHBC provided the Hilton Kuwait Resort with UTC Fire and Security’s highend EST fire detection platform. With a proven track record across a wide range of

prestigious projects throughout the world, the EST3 panel is able to meet and exceed every one of the Hilton’s requirements. Having more than 8,000 addressable fire detection devices deployed throughout the hotel complex, virtually every threat can be detected at an early stage. Ten EST3 control panels manage this massive amount of devices and make sure that signals are processed correctly between device, panel and control room. Having been the major gateway to England for goods and people for 200 years, it is also now on track to becoming Ireland’s major marine, leisure and tourism destination having received significant investment to extend its recreational and amenity value. Keeping this huge area safe for all visitors is a major undertaking and Hikvision cameras and hybrid recorders have recently been added to make sure this happens.

DLHC became increasingly concerned that the existing analogue CCTV infrastructure was only giving them a good overview of an increasingly marginal resource – the ferry terminal – and not providing an adequate level of surveillance of the new activities. What was clear was that the existing system incapable of keeping up with the increasing pressures of the site and Cork-based Hikvision distributor Mercury SD was called in to advise on upgrading the entire system.

Overcoming the challenge of existing infrastructure and low visibility

May 2015 www.asindia.in

The harbour complex is managed by the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company (DLHC) and it has been a user of CCTV for many years. The coax-cable analogue system betrays its age by concentrating heavily on the ferry terminal and the immediate surroundings – the harbour’s raison d’etre throughout the twentieth century. However, even a once busy ferry operation takes up just a relatively small part of the massive harbour. With the

East and West Piers separated by more than a kilometre at their mainland ends and extending far out into the Irish Sea, there is a large area contained by the two piers that has become a bustling hub of activity. It is now home to many marine activitybased businesses ranging from a Powerboat School to Yacht clubs and a Scuba Diving centre and a very large and still growing Marina complex for private leisure craft of all sizes. And, around the older ferry terminal, the new activities have given rise to a new generation of restaurants, car parks and other leisure businesses.

“Providing effective surveillance throughout Dun Laoghaire Harbour was a challenging prospect,” says Kevin O’Connell, System Designer at Mercury SD. “The landside of the harbour is an increasingly busy and crowded area, the older ferry terminal now surrounded by a large number of newer tourist hotspots and commercial areas, and then we also had to consider the explosion of water moorings and activities that the old system was never designed to accommodate. The whole focus of the CCTV surveillance system had to change into one that encompassed the whole harbour complex. “The harbour is also highly prone to extremely variable weather conditions, including frequent occurrences of high winds, severe rain and fog. Visibility can go from clear to poor in minutes and this means any new CCTV system that has a remit to

concentrate its surveillance on the exposed harbour walls and marina complex should be capable of coping with the worst of these environmental extremes while continuing to deliver clear images. “Finally, DLHC were keen to retain the existing analogue system if possible whilst extending the reach of the CCTV system to the entire 100 hectare site.”

A modernised coastal surveillance solution

Kevin O’Connell and other members of the design and installation team at Mercury SD made three site visits to the harbour before proposing their detailed scheme for a hybrid solution. The new plan retained all the existing coax cable that was laid within the harbour and concentrated the existing analogue cameras to cover the ferry terminal and its immediate surroundings. Some of the new Hikvision IP cameras were then added to the coax cabling using IP over Coax transceivers while the IP cameras intended to greatly extend the reach and scope of the surveillance to the more far-flung reaches of the harbour were linked in using Ubiquiti wireless links. All the cameras link back to the pair of Hikvision hybrid recorders located in the harbour office near the ferry terminal, from where a PTZ camera in the lighthouse is controlled.

Whatever the weather

“All the new cameras offer Hikvision’s SMART imaging and detection, most prominently the Smart Defog and Smart IR features,” explains Kevin. “These technologies in particular were a huge selling point for the new solution, overcoming the problems that burdened the old CCTV system when the harbour was beset by the unpredictable weather, even though most of the analogue cameras were indoors.” The Smart Defog and Smart IR features help improve the clarity of images. Smart Defog modifies the image correction algorithm to improve the whole image’s visibility and clarity in poor weather conditions, such as rain or severe fog. Smart IR addresses the common problem of overexposure of IR LEDs at the centre of images, automatically adjusting the IR strength to improve visibility.

All except one of the new Hikvision cameras were enclosed in a marine grade housing; being DS-2CD4012F 1.3 megapixel SMART IPC units along with DS-2CD4032F-A 3 megapixel pieces. The Hikvision DS2DF7284-A Network IR Speed Dome Camera was installed at the lighthouse as part of the new upgrade. Regularly used in busy areas such as stations, airports, railways and commercial centres, it oversees some of the busiest parts of the harbour and is a core CCTV feed for the harbour team. This PTZ camera provides 360° surveillance through its endless high-speed panning capability, offers a large 20x optical zoom capability to detect the smallest details and combines this with an IR range of up to 120 metres. The camera can also be shared by the emergency sea rescue services in the event of an incident in close proximity. “At the centre of the new surveillance solution are Hikvision DS-9016HFI-ST 16/16 Hybrid Recorders, which enabled us to retain the majority of the older analogue cameras while adding in the Hikvision IP units,” adds Kevin. “The DS-9016HFI-ST features H.264 video compression, a recording resolution of

up to 5 megapixels, 16 channel synchronous playback, and also HDMI and VGA output at up to 1080p, alongside a storage capacity of up to 12TB.”

Exceeding Expectations

The installation of the new surveillance solution has proved an immediate success. Tim Ryan, Harbour Manager at Dun Laoghaire says, “The Hikvision system specified has exceeded our initial expectations. We use the system 24 hours a day to monitor the inner harbour area, consisting of car parks, walkways, buildings, busy junctions and ship berthing areas. We have been able to provide An Garda Siochana (the police force) with evidence for a number of incidents that have occurred since the installation. In each case the coverage and quality of footage was of a high standard. The DS-2DF7284-A PTZ camera installed at our East Pier Lighthouse has proven beneficial in assisting with Search and Rescue and has the capability to be utilised by the local Coast Guard unit to monitor and record an incident on land or sea. Our recording equipment allows us to archive footage for approximately sixty days, which is also hugely beneficial to us.”

et’s say you’re responsible for ensuring the safety of business assets across multiple locations. As the business grows and assets get more widespread, how do you ensure security of assets without the uncertainty of human judgment and errors? How do you ensure quick corrective action in case danger strikes? Video surveillance certainly provides an easy, automated solution to the security challenge. However, the realities of today demand a lot from your video surveillance system. Not only does it have to keep a watchful eye on your business assets 24x7, it also needs be intelligent enough to alert you instantaneously whenever it senses unusual activity. It has to ensure that video evidence is available for investigation even if attempts are made to destroy the video storage device.

May 2015

There is a tailor-made solution that addresses this need squarely – Reliance Cloud Video Surveillance (RCVS). It is a landmark one-stop-shop solution designed to provide seamless surveillance of all your sites across the country.

www.asindia.in

Utilizing Secure Video Surveillance Cloud (SVSC) technology powered by Reliance’s already existing countrywide connectivity and cloud infrastructure, the system also incorporates alert-based 78

Using low light, vandal-proof cameras, high compression technology with good quality video using H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10, Advanced Video Coding (MPEG-4 AVC) video compression format, its in-built storage enables 15 days of continuous recording. Monitoring is possible from anywhere and event-based alerts are notified on your registered email addresses. Besides, the solution enables you to incorporate one or more external sensors (for door break-in, glass break-in, infrared beam detectors, sound monitors), needed. Customers have remote access to the video footage of their sites. Authorised users can access event-triggered feeds from anywhere on their devices. Even live feeds can be accessed from anywhere from the Reliance Private Network. Analytics for a wide range of security and business intelligence applications (such as movement detection, zoning, privacy masking) is available, backed by a 24x7 helpdesk available for troubleshooting. The point of such a solution is simple enough – use technology (in this case connectivity and storage) to make it easier for organizations to derive better business efficiencies from their operations – no matter how widely dispersed they may be. Take a look at the challenges that enterprises today face if they want to deploy a multisite video surveillance

system. Installing surveillance on a network is itself a challenge because of different technologies and diverse components required. Then, many of the available surveillance systems are not easy to use as they may not work on all web browsers. Mobile applications are also quite limited. Even if an organization were to somehow overcome these challenges, it would be faced with the expensive and complex problem of remotely managing multiple digital video recorders and cameras covering widespread locations. And if the organization needed to expand such surveillance, it could find addition of sites quite challenging with unreliable bandwidth at remote locations. Apart from these technical difficulties, installing the required hardware, video management solution, camera licenses, cloud fees, online storage and annual subscriptions can together be a very expensive (apart from time consuming) proposition. So what is unique about RCVS for an enterprise to consider deploying it? Consider the following advantages:

Single Solution: Delivers hardware, cloud services, apps, video sharing, and enterprise management in one simple solution Works Anywhere: Works with Apple and Windows web-browsers (no software to install) – it’s elegant and easy to use

Mobile Genius: Works on iPhone, iPad and Android

Plug and Play: Easy camera set up, one-click cloud connection (no complex network configuration), easy video sharing, and point and click cloud storage Easy Enterprise Management: Manages hundreds of NDVRs and cameras from one simple to use site.

Upgrade firmware, run reports, and get instant alerts.

Cost Effective: Includes all licenses costs, local and cloud storage, management software and portal access. Hardware is priced separately. In a nutshell, Reliance Cloud Video Surveillance is a hassle-free, one-stopshop solution offering end-to-end service across multiple sites, with ease in viewing through a secure access to the portal, allowing local and remote recording, is tamper-proof, offers wide network access and choice of technology for connectivity, is scalable up to 2,000 cameras, comes with manageability options and, and is backed up by a 3-year annual maintenance contract (AMC).

A CASE (STUDY) IN POINT: The RCVS can be better understood through a case study—that of one of the country’s fastest-growing private sector financial services company belonging to one of India’s largest conglomerates. This company provides comprehensive financial solutions that enable its customers to carry out trading and investment activities in a secure, costeffective and convenient manner. During 2013-2014, it had generated revenues of Rs. 350 crore (US$ 59 million) with a panIndia presence with over 7,000 outlets and nearly 7,30,000s broking accounts generating a daily average turnover of about Rs. 2,100 crore.

The Problem: With an increasing number of financial transactions being done at its outlets, the company wanted a solution which could keep a vigil at the stores and also wanted documentary evidence that could be presented, if need be, to law enforcement and legal authorities. The requirement was thus summarized as follows: There was an immediate video surveillance solution requirement in small branches where the customer had no budget to provide for physical security. Customer walk-ins were high in such stores and hence there was an inherent need to monitor them. There was a need for documentary evidence being made available in the case of any

unforeseen incident/malfeasance investigation.

for

The Solution: With the capabilities of addressing all the requirements of this company and the ability to deploy it on a widespread and in a cost-effective manner, Reliance Communications’ Enterprise team pitched RCVS to the customer. Built on SVSC technology that offered distinctive route creation and virtualization, RCVS enabled the customer the ease of logging on to the browserbased VMS from anywhere across India. It was also the most cost-effective solution from among the different choices available by virtue of taking away high infrastructure investments that otherwise would have been needed to be made by the customer. The customer opted for RCVS Package 1 (of the four package options) which offers the country’s firstever, state-of-the-art SIM-based Internet Protocol-based camera with built in NDVR capabilities.

SOLUTION DIAGRAM Benefits to the Customer: The intrinsic benefits that RCVS offered are as follows: The customer was offered a complete solution, eliminating the need to coordinate with multiple vendors. Its alert-based event feeds on the Cloud, even if the NDVR were to be damaged, thus providing crucial evidence for events like intrusions. It offered extensive connectivity, reaching over 1,500 cities

in India and provided convergence of locations over the RCVS Cloud. The solution facilitated corrective action by providing immediate (real-time) event alerts on email to authorized users, and offered access to archived camera feeds through a secure web-based portal; facilitated Business Intelligence with Analytics support, and was the most costeffective solution for video surveillance across the customer’s enterprise! While this customer was from the BFSI segment, RCVS finds its use in almost every industry vertical. It is about leveraging the latest technology, in this case using the power of cloud surveillance to meet the need of monitoring multiple locations from anywhere. For a monthly fee, an enterprise gets comprehensive, end-to-end single-stop solution to meet all its video surveillance needs, across the length and breadth of the country, be it a village, a town or a city, or all of these. Customers can choose from the several packages on offer or, if they so require, from a combination of elements from various packages depending on the number of cameras that are needed to monitor their site(s). Modern video surveillance can do much more than passive recording of sites. With Reliance Cloud Video Surveillance (RCVS), you can give your business the advantage of cutting edge, end-to-end, multisite video surveillance service that is virtually impenetrable.

Digital Footprint Safety Around 40% of the world population has an Internet connection today. In 1995, it was less than 1%. Internet can today be accessed via a computer, mobile telephone, PDA, games machine, digital TV, etc. The rapid expansion and penetration of Internet has created a virtual galaxy of information, accessible to almost anyone from anywhere in the world. The advantages of this pool of information are inexhaustible; however it has also created a lucrative opportunity for cyber criminals. SUBMITTED BY SHREEKANT ROAD, ANALYST, MITKAT ADVISORY SERVICES

M

eant to be a platform for information sharing, the Internet permanently stores any and every information fed into it, intentionally or unintentionally, in a cloud of data. All this information becomes a part of the public domain, with the original creator of the content often losing control over which part of the world the information reaches, who uses it, and how it is used. One share on Facebook, a tweet on Twitter, or a post on a blog, is enough for a piece of information to reach millions of Internet users around the world. Thus, it assumes paramount importance that users of digital services take some precautions to stay safe. Internet creates an identity trail of every user, using the information shared by them and navigation patterns. Many bits of seemingly unconnected information can be pieced together to create a digital profile of each person. This is being increasingly used by cyber criminals to perpetrate financial crimes, identity thefts or creating some intelligence that could be sold in the market. May 2015

DIGITAL FOOTPRINT

www.asindia.in

Digital footprint refers to the data that we leave behind when we use digital services like websites, social media platforms, smart phone applications and other Internet services which we interact with. 80

Passive footprint - Many websites collect user data like browsing history, IP addresses, geographical location and login information in the form of “cookies”. Cookies help in creating a string of usage data or digital footprint that pertains to a specific user. The data is automatically recorded without the user giving out information. Most users do not realise this, but by default, web browsers contain thousands of cookies, created and placed by every website visited by the user. These must be deleted from time to time. Active footprint - This is created through the personal data released deliberately by a user. This data often contains specific information pertaining to a person’s identity and habits. For example, posting status updates on a social media platform can allow other users to infer your current geographical location, the activity you are involved in and with whom. The digital trail left behind on social media platforms includes not only posts, but also “likes” and “shares” performed by a user.

THREATS Cyber fraud - The information is frequently being utilised to commit cyber frauds. The space is gaining popularity amongst criminals as they can commit these crimes from a remote location and with the rising number of Internet users and expansion of financial services through apps and websites, the potential victims and amount of money is also multiplying.

Cyber stalking - another major crime that is frequently being reported, wherein the attacker harasses a victim using electronic communication, such as e-mail or instant messaging (IM), or messages posted to a Web site or a discussion group. Cyber stalkers may also try to target their potential victims in the real world. Identity theft - Divulgence of too much information may also make users

vulnerable to identity theft.

Unsolicited marketing - While not considered dangerous, digital footprints also aid marketers in targeted marketing, which could be quite a nuisance, if unsolicited. Reputational risk Even information that is not critical may affect your reputation on the Internet, which has repercussions in the real world. SAFETY TIPS Think before you post; one must exercise restraint in posting sensitive information on the web. Regularly review privacy settings on all online accounts as privacy policies of social websites are updated frequently. Do not disclose your personal address, phone number, passwords, bank card numbers etc. even in private messages. Avoid using social networking sites at work. Many hackers target their victims and computer systems through social media sites.Use caution when you receive links in messages on your social networking site.Be wary of unknown persons sending friend requests on social networks. Be careful about the information you reveal about your workplace or company on your social networking site. With Internet use and penetration set to increase manifold in the coming years, cyber threats can also be expected to increase, in frequency and complexity, at an exponential rate. Protecting your digital footprint is thus an on going process and should form a vital component of your online behavioural pattern. Besides individuals, organisations should also take up certain precautionary measures to safeguard their employees, thus preventing any spill over from their personal lives to professional lives. Organisations must develop a culture of practicing highest levels of information security through conduct of sensitisation and awareness campaigns.

Martin Jefferson ,

Business Unit Director, Datacenter and Digital Video products, WD

Tell us about the global storage and surveillance market evolving terms of WD’s perspective?

A

Darrin Bulik: There is quite significant growth in the global storage market for surveillance especially on a percentage basis. It depends on the market and the region we are looking at. It is a market we are very focused on as it is a key growing sector because of factors such as: • Transition to IP-based surveillance systems • Promise of planned smart cities in countries such as India • Application-specific products such as WD Purple enabling better quality surveillance video systems

A

space.

Q

As the surveillance industry is highly cluttered, what does WD plan to bring to the table with regards to the Indian/APAC market?

A

Darrin Bulik: We closely work with key system manufacturers & designers to understand the customer needs of a system from a storage point of view. That’s how we arrived at WD Purple: to come up with storage that is not a PC hard drive. WD purple is tuned and optimized for surveillance storage.

Q

Since the launch of WD Purple in last year, what has been the market response to your surveillance specific storage products?

A

Darrin response

Bulik: The Market has been very good.

Optimizations we did in WD Purple were able to show performance benefits in a system as compared to the regular desktop hard drives (which cannot record

Martin Jefferson: The response to our purple launch has been beyond our expectations. Our percentage share is clearly higher than any other hard drive manufacturer. WD Purple has a combination of excellent reliability and durability and comes out on top in all aspects of the comparative tests done by customers against the competition. We follow this with good branding. WD Purple equals Surveillance has been a very strong form of branding as people can relate the color to the product.

Q

How do you plan to target the Smart City and Safe City project segments? Khwaja Saifuddin: We are targeting segments both from bottom and the top. We are in touch with consultants, architects, designers, local bodies, state government and central government, to make them understand and educate them on the importance of storage.

A

It’s not only about the cameras or the DVRs or NVRs that you see physically, but everything resides on the hard drive.

Darrin Bulik: It depends on which market analysis we look at. From a CAGR point of view, it is certainly much higher than other segments like the PC

Senior Sales Director - Middle East, Africa & South Asia, WD

May 2015

What is the growth rate in percentage when we look at the global scenario for the surveillance segment?

Q

Khwaja Saifuddin,

Other benefit for our partners is from a qualification point of view - Before WD Purple and surveillance HDDs, they would need to get a generic hard drive qualified through a lot of engineering resources. But, by having a surveillance specific product like WD Purple they can focus on that product, get it qualified and use that as the recommended hard drive in their surveillance system.

The government’s expenditure on infrastructure is for data storage and hence they should not compromise on the quality of the hard drive.

Q

Considering the size of these projects, storage is expected to multiply. Does WD plan to come out with special packages for these projects?

A

Khwaja Saifuddin: It’s too early as the projects are yet to take off. Many of them are in the conceptual stages. Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Kochi, Lucknow and few other cities have taken off with the projects. As every project has different size and scalability, there is no specific need for special packages. We offer scalability. Starting with traffic signal monitoring and then moving onto hospitals, smart infrastructure for buildings, government offices, schools and universities, etc. As we work with our partners, total package comes into play with infrastructural players as well. Currently we don’t see a need for special package as everything has its own size and need. We cannot judge the need based on the size of the data.

Q

What is the strategy that WD has adopted for partners to coax the surveillance markets in the Indian and APAC markets? Khwaja Saifuddin: Partners are a key part of our strategy. Majority of our business is through our partners and we understand their importance in that segment. We do everything to keep that segment as healthy as possible to make sure there is margin or an involvement from our reseller community in the total business which happens.

A

We have partnered with almost all the security solution providers in India as well as globally.

82

Our products complement them and they complement us.

Do you see good news for WD in the 4K and HD trend?

Majority of our business in India is through the traditional reseller community. It is an integral part for us and we keep it involved through various educational and incentive programs. We work on enhancing their knowledge because we don’t want them to be just box movers but instead be solution providers.

Darrin Bulik: We are hoping for more good news on the surveillance systems growth as the resolution and HDR capability go up. The challenge is that there is going to be transition into a new compression technology at the same time which unfortunately offsets some of that higher storage recording that would be happening in these 4K and HD capable systems.

We take pride in the depth of our outreach, which is not only limited to metros and state capitals but also to other smaller class cities of every state. We enhance the knowledge base of the resellers, making them more involved and showing them various paths to diversify in surveillance and security market opportunities if they find the traditional PC markets stagnant, thereby increasing their portfolio.

Q

How are you forcing the growth in the surveillance storage segment in the Indian markets?

A

Khwaja Saifuddin: From an Indian perspective we cannot compare it to the numbers globally because in mature economies the basis of infrastructure is already present. Some sort of surveillance/ security system already existed so now it’s a revamp that is happening in those markets. In India, it’s the first step towards safety and security, hence the growth and business is much higher as compared to the mature markets. Not only in India, but in all adjoining emerging economies, it is the first step that is being taken towards safer and smart cities. Hence, the impact on business is in a positive way and is much higher than what we see in other places. It’s very difficult to attribute a percentage number to this growth as the channels are not mapped.

There is still lot more content recorded as the systems become easier to install and more scalable. This line of growth (HD and 4K trend) is conducive for WD.

Q

How do you see the adaptation of the 4K trend in India?

A

Khwaja Saifuddin: It’s still in the infancy state but the acceptance is visible. People who want a quality service have options. Darrin Bulik: There is a benefit moving to higher resolution. The benefit of IP is that now one can attach IP components to an analogue system because many people aren’t going to rip of their analogue system and go for IP system. There are systems and applications that don’t have analogue, providing better chances for IP.

Q

Q

What is the future roadmap for WD in the Indian, APAC and global markets?

What are the latest developments at Honeywell Fire Safety?

The categories we are excited about are Public Address & Voice Alarm and FAAST (Fire Alarm Aspiration Sensing Technology). Till recently, the major focus of the user was on detection of fire as reliably as possible. Now, people have started realizing that detecting fire at the earliest and a good public address & voice alarm system is equally important for complete life safety and to enable speedy evacuation. Through various studies it has been proved that a faster evacuation process saves a lot of lives. Most of the time loss of life happens because people don’t know exactly what to do in case of a fire hazard.

Q

What are the new product offerings by Honeywell Fire Safety?

A

We have launched high end public address and voice alarm system –VARIODYN D-1. The response is quite positive so far. We have three installations including one of the largest airport of India on Variodyn. For mid market segment we have X-618 (Public Address and Voice Alarm System) from Honeywell. X-618 along with Honeywell Amplifier and Speakers offers solution for most of the commercial building application. We have also launched FAAST loop based models and that along with the existing range of Aspiration System allows for very early fire detection technology for applications such as Data Centers, Hospitals and Hotels. FAAST aspiration system is getting good response and has already been installed in varied applications including Telecom companies, Data Centers, Warehouses and Airport.

Q

How is Honeywell Fire Safety targeting the Indian market?

A

Our approach is to have right technology for the right market segment. We will keep on focusing on our core and drive customer value through segmented offering. At Honeywell Fire Safety, we manufacture major part of our portfolio in Gurgaon manufacturing Facility. This gives us opportunity to be more local in our market and develop solutions that suits Indian customers. As a company we believe in providing our customers a complete experience by offering

products & services that cater to their problems, bring after sales service nearest to them and to also provide installation and commissioning support on the go with the help of our tech support toll free number. Going forward we are planning to manufacture more products locally instead of importing from various parts of the world. Honeywell Fire Safety is committed to the idea of being ‘easy to do business with’. All put together we are going through an exciting time. We will continue to invest in products, channel and people to service our customers more efficiently and effectively.

Q

Any major project that was implemented by Honeywell Fire Safety?

A

At Honeywell Fire Safety, the most important motivational factor is to help our customer do business better by providing right solutions and enabling them with right tools and help them realize their true business potential. There are many successful stories that relates to these philosophy, but the most recent that warrants mentioning at this point is a campus of a major technology company that was recently installed and commissioned. The project is one of a kind as it has allowed us to demonstrate connected building concept by integrating voice evacuation over IP with the help of our flagship Variodyn D1 and PMMI+ (Public Address Man Machine Interface) which enables customers to have zone representation in a graphical format. With these features our customer intends to make life safer across its connected campus.

Q A

What are the growth prospects for Fire Industry in India?

As far as fire alarm market is concerned we are experiencing good growth in India. Growth is primarily driven by improving customer awareness

and present low penetration of Fire Alarm in India. The awareness is catching up and people have started to understand the value of fire alarm and life safety in their premises. Hence customers are looking for quality products and good brand rather than only focusing on the cost. Over the past System Installers have also started to play a very serious role by continuously pushing the boundaries in various projects by adapting latest technologies that would result in better fire safety & provide their customers with advance solutions for existing problems. All these factors put together are generating healthy growth in our portfolio. We have also launched the whole suites of Public Address & Voice Alarm solutions as well as Aspiration System (FAAST). All in all we are going through an exciting phase.

Q

What is Honeywell Fire Safety’s response to ‘Make in India’ initiative?

anaging video surveillance for large and multi-location enterprises is a different ball game compared to video surveillance for small organizations. To overcome difficulties like managing the increase in complexities with the increase in the number of locations, the need to adapt the existing enterprise networking and IT infrastructure, monitoring multiple far flung offices, plants, branches in different time-zones etc., Matrix focuses on building IP video surveillance solutions. This is specifically designed to meet diverse and complex needs for large and midsize organizations spread across multiple buildings, campuses and locations. This highly reliable, scalable and modular enterprise solution centrally manages 1Lakh cameras and 1,000 Recording Servers. It is built on distributed architecture with edge recording to ensure complete optimization of servers and bandwidth. Moreover for proactive security, SATATYA SAMAS comes with video analytics like missing object, perimeter security, motion 102

detection, camera tamper and sends instant notifications like SMS and Email on its identification. With the launch of this cost effective and feature rich Video Surveillance Management solution, Matrix hopes to carve a niche for itself in the IP video surveillance market. All modern organizations need to protect their physical and IP assets and ensure human safety by controlling movement of people as per pre-defined rules. Matrix COSEC ARC is an intelligent compact IP panel with PoE for a single door, making installation simple and scalable. Its dual modes of operation make COSEC ARC a perfect device to work in a standalone mode for a single location without any software or in a network mode for multilocations with COSEC CENTRA software. The state-of-the-art COSEC ARC can control 2 readers on Wiegand or RS-485, door lock and other auxiliary devices required for one door making it an advantaged solution for any access control installation.

Providing more insight for this enterprise surveillance management solution, the Managing Director of Matrix ComsecMr. Ganesh Jivani added “SATATYA SAMAS architecture is built on five pillars of scalability, integration, flexibility, control and security to meet the needs of modern and dynamic organizations. SATATYA SAMAS surpasses most other video surveillance solutions in the market today in width and depth of functions it offers for centralized live view, remote-mobile view, recording, playback, video analytics, backup, archival, alerts, notifications and system management. Overall, Matrix SATATYA SAMAS enhances security, productivity and control in an organization. We hope to establish MatrixSATATYA SAMAS as the most preferred IP video surveillance solution by offering best-inclass solution and services to set a new benchmark in the IP video surveillance market.
