Minoti (name changed), is a widow who lives on her own in Birubari, India. She found herself alone when she refused to hand over her assets and ornaments to her son and daughter-inlaw. Like her, many others are facing abuse in the city as it witnesses a sharp rise in incidents of abuse of elderly persons in recent years. A latest report from Help Age India, a leading NGO working to secure senior citizens' rights, has reported that elders here are facing a huge ‘crisis’. The report said that Guwahati has one of the highest rates of elders' abuse among 12 Tier II cities in the country that were part of the survey last year. The elders here faced abuse ‘almost daily’. “Almost 71 per cent of elderly people have faced abuse on a daily basis here. Another 21 per cent reported to have faced it weekly and only six per cent on a monthly basis in 2014,” the report said. It said that the city had even outplayed the national average in the category. On a national basis, of the elderly who faced abuse, 35 per cent said they were abused at least ‘once a week’,

20 per cent have faced abuse ‘once a month’ and only 17 per cent said they were abused daily last year. What came as another shocking finding was that the biggest perpetrators of such elderly abuse acts were their own children. “Among the perpetrators, around 74 per cent were reported to be the sons in the family. The daughtersin-law were also active in abusing the elders with some 62 per cent involved in such abusive acts,” an official of the NGO said. Most of them, some 68 per cent of this abuse, was ‘verbal’. A survey carried out by several agencies pointed to the lack of adjustment and change in ethos as the prime reasons behind the trouble among the family members. In the city, around 58 per cent of elders face abuse for at least three to five years. However, the report also mentioned that 59 per cent among them chose not to report the incidents to either police or any government agencies saying it was a ‘family matter’. The United Nations has designated 15th June as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Saudi prince vows to donate $32 billion fortune

PHILANTHROPIST: Billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal has pledged to donate his wealth to charitable projects

One of the world's richest people - Saudi Arabia's billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, has said that he will donate all of his wealth, in excess of $32 billion, to charity over the coming years. The money will go to the Saudi prince's organisation called ‘Alwaleed Philanthropies’ to work in the fields of ‘intercultural understanding’ and supporting

communities in need, he said in a statement. The prince's two children were present at his boardroom when he made the announcement in Riyadh. Programs of Alwaleed will include promoting health, eradicating disease, bringing electricity to remote villages, building orphanages and schools, as well as ‘empowering women’. The prince, chairman of investment firm Kingdom Holding Company, said he has already donated $3.5 billion to the charitable organisation. Alwaleed joins other billionaires who have made similar pledges in recent years, such as Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Michael Bloomberg. He credited the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their wide range of charitable projects and said his organisation has partnered with them on health initiatives.

“Philanthropy is a personal responsibility, which I embarked upon more than three decades ago and is an intrinsic part of my Islamic faith,” he said in the statement, which came during the holy month of Ramadan when Muslims are encouraged to give charity and help the needy. The prince, who does not hold an official government position, built his wealth through seed money from his father and smart investments. Kingdom Holding owns stakes in hotels like The Four Seasons, Fairmont and Raffles, as well as companies such as News Corp., Citigroup, Twitter and Apple. Though he did not give an exact timeframe, Alwaleed said his billions would be allocated through a ‘well-devised plan’ throughout the coming years. He said the donations would be based on a strategy supervised by a board of trustees, which he will head.

British teens ‘married’ to Syrian IS militants After telling their parents they were going out for the day, the Bethnal Green Academy pupils boarded a flight from Gatwick to Turkey. They later entered Syria and are thought to be in Raqqa, the self-styled capital of the so-called Islamic State. The lawyer representing their families has confirmed the marriages of two of the girls. Tasnime Akunjee would not say which of the girls had married and said there was no information about the status of the third girl. He also confirmed that the two girls had contacted their parents to say they had been married to what they called ‘approved’ IS men in their 20s in ceremonies approved by IS authorities. Mr Akunjee said the girls had contacted their families ‘some weeks ago’ to tell them of the marriages, which took place ‘some time ago’. He added: “The families learned that the girls were not together in Raqqa three months ago, and it was because two of them were married. “They are distraught, because it doesn't bode well for their return. The girls are starting to grow roots As Muslims across the world mark the start of Ramadhan, a brand new British Urdu-language television channel has launched. Islam Channel Urdu will bring viewers a fresh approach to Islamoriented television, encouraging critical thinking and addressing current issues faced by the Urduspeaking community. Whether it is business and enterprise, immigration or new counter-terror laws, the Channel aims to help viewers better understand the topics that matter. Islam Channel Urdu will enable Urdu speaking Muslims to engage fully with the complexity of issues facing Muslims around the world. The Channel has come about from demand from the wider Urdu speaking community to provide engaging and informative content which reflects the ever-growing and diverse cultural backgrounds. It seeks to truly represent the experiences of the global community. Islam Channel Urdu programming content includes current affairs,

socially, and deep roots.” He said the news had dashed any hopes the families may have had that their daughters might return. He added: “It has caused a lot of distress. “It entrenches their lives in Syria, rather than in Britain. “It erodes significantly hopes that they will come back.” The girls, who had been studying for their GCSEs at the school in Tower Hamlets, east London have been described as ‘straight-A students’, and are understood to be living separately in the IS stronghold of Raqqa. This has led Mr Akunjee to discount a video released online which claimed to show the three girls walking around the city carrying automatic rifles. He said that, at the time the video was shot, two of the girls were known to be married and separated from their east London friends. He added: “Those who are married are under the aegis of their husbands and are unlikely to be under the aegis of some woman leader.”

There will also be a number of unique in-house produced series such such as Achi Sehat, Hum Laug and Haqeeqat. Today, the UK is home to the largest Urdu speaking community in Europe, with a population exceeding 1.17 million. It's estimated that this figure is set to more than double in the next 15

Asian dentist attacked with machete ‘White supremacist’ hacked 24-year-old victim with weapons because he was ‘ethnic-looking’

A 24-year-old Asian dentist, who had popped out to buy his lunch at his local supermarket, almost lost his life as a white supremacist brandished a machete and started hacking him. The unprovoked attack on terrified Dr Sarandev Bhambra resulted in him running through the aisles of a supermarket, as he tried to escape crazed Zack Davies, 26, who allegedly wanted to avenge the murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby. Davies told police he had singled out Dr Sarandev Bhambra because of his skin colour, yelling ‘white supremacy’ and ‘this is revenge’ as he attempted to sever his victim's left hand. Only the brave intervention of a former soldier ended the horrific ordeal and saved the life of the trainee dentist, a court heard. Jurors heard that Davies followed Dr Bhambra into a branch of Tesco on 14th January because he ‘looked Asian’.

He attacked him with a claw hammer and 12in machete in Mold, north Wales. He almost severed Dr Bhambra’s hand and slashed his head and back.

He attacked him with a claw hammer and 12in machete in Mold, north Wales. He almost severed Dr Bhambra’s hand and slashed his head and back. As Dr Bhambra tried to escape the 26-year-old chased him. Davies was allegedly laughing and shouting ‘white power’ and ‘this is for Lee Rigby’. But Mold Crown Court was told ‘one individual in particular acted with true bravery’. That person was former soldier Peter Fuller. As Dr Bhambra passed him he stepped into Davies’ path, put up his hands and shouted: “Stop, this is madness, I am ex forces.” Mr Fuller told the court: “His demeanour slightly changed, he had to stop or go through me. “The fact I said I was an ex soldier, that I stood in his way, took the wind out of his sails.” Davies acknowledged in court Mr Fuller stopped him, and Dr Bhambra said he owed him his life. The court heard that material on white supremacy and Nazism was found at Davies’ home. Items included swastika badges, Combat 18 stickers, a copy of Mein Kampf and a Far Right pamphlet dealing with the death of Drummer Rigby, the soldier hacked to death by Islamic extremists near Woolwich barracks in 2013. Davies denies attempted murder but admits wounding with intent. The trial continues.

Security guard turns actor for Bollywood hit

Bollywood director accused of raping American tourist A Bollywood director has been arrested for allegedly raping an American tourist at his home in New Delhi, India. Mahmood Farooqui, best known for a satirical film about farmers' suicides, was taken into custody on Saturday 20th June. The 30-year-old woman said she was raped by Farooqui at his New Delhi home in March, but only made the complaint to investigators on Friday 19th June. It is belived that the victim is a USA PhD student who was visiting India for research purposes. Farooqui's wife, Anusha Rizwi, has dismissed the allegations as ‘manipulated and false’ in a statement. She added: “We are determined to fight this till the reality is presented before the people.” Farooqui is also an artist and writer. The Oxford University graduate worked as a researcher on British author William Dalrymple's book ‘White Mughals’. Tougher laws against sex offenders were introduced across India in December 2012, after the fatal gang-rape of a student in the country's capital caused mass street protests. Despite this, high levels of sexual violence against women are still reported.

Yorkshire star on the big screen A film fanatic grandfather from Bradford, who has featured in everything from Pakistani movies to ITV’s DCI Banks, says his latest appearance on the big screen is one of his ‘proudest yet’. Over the past 40 years, 63-year-old Mehmood Sultan has been pursuing his love of acting, taking on small and large roles, in the UK and Pakistan. Last year he was cast to play a part in the latest Indian action-comedy, ‘Welcome 2 Karachi’, and upon its release in cinemas around the world last Friday, he says he couldn’t wait to see the final production. “I have just always loved acting,” he said. “I do not act for the money, I do it because it is something that I am very passionate about. “When the Welcome 2 Karachi opportunity came about I was invited down to London by the director and spent the night there before filming my scene. “I play a Pakistani man and it was really good fun to do. I was amazed by how the film’s team were able to make London,

Bradford, Birmingham and Wales all look like Karachi.” For five years between 1990 and 1994, Mr Sultan lived in Karachi, Lahore, where he experienced a successful career in the Lollywood film industry. Returning to the UK, he settled down in Bradford and despite continuing to carry out acting roles, he now works full time as a security guard in the city. His latest opportunity came about earlier this year when he was invited to feature in another Pakistani film and will be flying out to Thailand next month for filming. “Whenever I am offered an acting role or my agent gets in touch with me, I always

want to do it,” he added. “The opportunity in Thailand is very exciting and I cannot wait to go over there.” ‘Welcome 2 Karachi’ features the pairing of Arshad Warsi and Jacky Bhagnani as two lost Indians, stuck in the dangerous city of Karachi. With political turmoil rife in the city, the duo have to fend for themselves with no money, no passports, no means of communication, and perhaps most importantly, no way of getting home. The film is now showing in cinemas across the country with scenes notably shot locally in the Bradford Bazaar, Little Germany and Lister Mills.

Pregnant woman finds lizard in can of tomatoes whilst making curry GRIZZLY DISCOVERY: The tomato cans were bought at Masala Bazaar in Birmingham, which is an Asian supermarket owned by Euro Foods

A pregnant woman in Birmingham, discovered a dead lizard floating inside a can of tomatoes as she was cooking for her husband and 15month-old son at their home in Alum Rock Road. Sanam Hussain, who is seven months pregnant, reportedly began screaming after she saw the creature. Her husband Muhammad Hussain ran into the kitchen to find the lizard floating around. "My wife was making lunch for me and our 15-month-old son. When she opened the can, she saw something and

screamed at me to come through. I saw it was a dead baby lizard," Mr Hussain said. "We are worried about food poisoning. The can was part of a pack of 12. We had already eaten seven of them. Now my wife is off her food. I think we have been put off tinned tomatoes for life." Mrs Hussain says she immediately felt sick when she saw the lizard. "It was disgusting. I am in shock. I am so worried about my baby because I am pregnant. I talked to my midwife about it and she said if I feel ill, I should contact

the hospital." Mr Hussain says he purchased the tomato cans at Masala Bazaar, which is an Asian supermarket owned by Euro Foods. Euro Foods has reportedly contacted its Italian supplier to investigate how the lizard got into the cans. "This is a major concern," the company said. "We are in touch with the family and are going to collect the offending can and have it analysed to see at what stage of the process the lizard got introduced. Once we have investigated, we will put in controls to stop this happening again."

Indian funding for Pakistan’s MQM party?

An authoritative Pakistani source has told UK authorities that officials in Pakistan's MQM party received Indian government funds. Allegedly the source has said that India has trained hundreds of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) militants in explosives, weapons and sabotage over the last 10 years in camps in north and northeast India over the last 10 years. British authorities held formal recorded interviews with senior MQM officials who told them the party was receiving Indian funding. Before 2005-2006 the training was given to a small number of midranking members of the MQM, the official said. More recently greater numbers of more junior party members have been trained. The claims follow the statement of a senior Karachi police officer that two arrested MQM militants said they had been trained in India. In April Rao Anwar gave details of how the two men went to India via Thailand to be trained by the Indian intelligence agency RAW. In response MQM leader Altaf Hussain issued a tirade of abuse at Mr Anwar. Asked about the claims of Indian funding and training of the MQM, the Indian High Commission in

London said: “Shortcomings of governance cannot be rationalised by blaming neighbours.” The UK authorities started investigating the MQM in 2010 when a senior party leader, Imran Farooq, was stabbed to death outside his home in north London. With 24 members in the National Assembly, the MQM has long been a dominant force in the politics of Pakistan's largest city, Karachi. UK authorities investigating the MQM for alleged money laundering also found a list of weapons in an MQM property. In the course of the inquiries the UK authorities found a list itemising weapons, including mortars, grenades and bomb-making equipment in an MQM property. The list included prices for the weapons. Asked about the list, the MQM made no response. As the UK police investigations have progressed, the British judiciary has been taking an increasingly tough line on the MQM. Back in 2011 a British judge adjudicating an asylum appeal case found that ‘the MQM has killed over 200 police officers who have stood up against them in Karachi’. Last year another British judge hearing another such case found: “There is overwhelming objective

evidence that the MQM for decades had been using violence.” The MQM is also under pressure in Pakistan. In March the country's security forces raided the party's Karachi headquarters. They claimed to have found a significant number of weapons there. The MQM said they were planted. Altaf Husain has lived in self-imposed exile in the UK for more than 20 years. He was given a British passport in 2002. For many years the party has been accused of using violence to impose its will in Karachi. To date a number of MQM officials, including Altaf Hussain, have been arrested in relation to the money-laundering case but no-one has been charged. The party insists that all its funds are legitimate and that most of them come from donors in the business community in Karachi. India has long accused Pakistani officials of involvement in sponsoring militant attacks in India. Delhi, for example, has demanded that Pakistan take firmer action against those suspected of plotting and managing the Mumbai attacks of 2008. The latest developments in the MQM case suggest that Pakistan will now counter such complaints with demands that India stop sponsoring violent forces in Karachi.

Fighting crime at SEVEN A young crime-fighter from Birmingham has been honoured by West Midlands Police this month after living up to his namesake’s tough reputation and standing up to robbers in his family home. Seven-year-old Muhammed Ali became one of the force’s youngest bravery heroes last week after being presented with the Chief Constable’s Young Persons Award from CC Chris Sims. The brave primary school pupil showed courage beyond his years when he put himself between a group of seven raiders − who burst into the family home in Balsall Heath − and his mother from whom they were demanding Asian gold jewellery. The youngster was jolted from his bed on 2nd October last year when he heard

After heading downstairs he was faced with the sight of his mother being rounded on by masked men before one of the raiders grabbed hold of his baby brother and threatened to hurt him unless she handed over valuables. Little Muhammed ran to his mum’s aid and shouted at the men to leave her alone − and detectives believe his actions threw the attackers on the back foot and moments later they fled empty handed. Birmingham East Police Chief Inspector Phil Radbourne praised the actions of the courageous child and said he was more than deserving of his award. “It must have been scary but Muhammed’s first instinct was to run

‘We are fast losing patience’

Delay in Britain’s Iraq war investigation angers Prime Minister

Nearly six years later, John Chilcot, the head of the inquiry, says he can't say when it will be completed because of its complexity and the need to obtain responses from people criticised in the report. Cameron, in a letter to Chilcot, said he was disappointed. “Since the establishment of the Inquiry nearly six years ago, the British

public, in particular those who served in Iraq or lost loved ones in the conflict, have been awaiting the results,” he wrote. “We are fast losing patience.” Finance minister George Osborne also weighed in, using a question and answer session in parliament to urge those conducting the inquiry to ‘get on with it’.

Malala ‘attackers’ set free INSPIRATIONAL: After being shot in the head by the Pakistani Taliban in 2012, Malala Yousafzai has gone on to be an advocate for girl’s rights to education

Eight men who had been charged with organising the shooting of education activist, Malala Yousafzai in 2012, have been freed due to what Pakistani officials labelled ‘a lack of evidence’. Ten men were initially sentenced in April this year for 25 years each after being convicted in a trial held behind closed doors. The news of eight of the men’s release on Friday 5th June, came as a shock to many and once again brings the heavily criticised justice system in Pakistan into question. Senior police official Salim Khan said they were freed due to a lack of evidence. “The only reason for their release was lack of proof against them,” Khan said. Prosecutor Naeem Khan said the men had confessed to the court that they had helped plan the attack yet denied that any of them was the actual gunmen.

“During the trial, all the 10 persons had admitted and confessed their role in Malala's attack before the judge of the anti-terrorism court. But only two of them, Izhar Khan and Israrullah Khan, were convicted while the remaining eight were freed,” Khan said. Pakistani Taliban militants claimed responsibility for attacking Malala in 2012 as she travelled home from school in Swat, northwest of the capital Islamabad. She was shot in the head and airlifted to Britain for treatment, where she now lives. Two other schoolgirls were also wounded. Malala became a global symbol of defiance after she campaigned for girls' education despite Taliban repression and she won the 2014 Nobel Peace prize. Khan said he filed an appeal against the acquittal on 18th May but the men had already been freed on 30th April.

Give blood, save a life APPEAL: Pradeep Thakkar survived his battle with cancer after successfully finding a stem cell donor and is now appealing for more people to give blood

Calls made for more BME donors A cancer survivor is calling on more members of Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BME) communities to come forward and give blood after having his own life ‘saved’ by donors. Pradeep Thakkar was diagnosed with the rare disease, Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, in 2005 resulting in him losing many of his own red blood cells during chemotherapy and requiring blood transfusions to counteract the condition. Unfortunately for the now 62-yearold, the disease spread and came back after 15 months. Despite undergoing further chemotherapy and blood transfusions - his only hope for longterm survival was a stem cell transplant. During the first round of treatment the doctors had not found a donor across Europe but this time they did – a young mixed race man from here in the UK in Bristol. Pradeep said: “They found the leukaemia while they were investigating a blocked artery. I’d had symptoms like shortness of breath but I ignored them because I thought it

was because I was a smoker and I wasn’t fit. “It was shocking – you hear it happens to other people but you don’t think it will happen to you. During the chemotherapy I six blood had transfusions of two It was units each. fantastic to get the because transplant when you relapse there was no other treatment. “The cancer would have kept coming back. I wouldn’t be here – I would have died. When you have the stem cell transplant it’s like you have alien bodies going into your body, and your body is fighting back, it completely takes it out for you for three or four months.” He added: “I am all for blood donations and stem cell transplant – they saved my life. The more people that do it the better.” Currently, people from BME

communities make up less than five per cent of those who have donated blood within the last 12 months, despite representing around 14 per cent of the population. NHS Blood and Transplant now requires a further 6,500 more donations from Black, Asian and mixed race donors this year compared to last year to keep up with the demand. Visit www.blood.co.uk for more information on how you can save a life.

Amongst the guests were Syal’s husband and long-time collaborator Sanjeev Bhaskar, actors Richard E Grant, Maureen Lipman, Adrian Lester, Kabir Bedi and Nitin Ganatra, author Anthony Horowitz, the High Commissioner of India His Excellency Ranjan Mathai, comedians Jo Brand and Lenny Henry as well as Melvyn Bragg, Matthew Wright, Anita Rani, Nikki Bedi and Twiggy & Leigh Lawson. ‘The House of Hidden Mothers’ is Syal’s first book in sixteen years since the critically acclaimed ‘Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee’. Never one to shy away from difficult topics, ‘The House of Hidden Mothers’ tackles the issues of late parenthood and surrogacy, two subjects rarely discussed, although extremely prevalent in both the British and the

British Asian community. With many ‘late-mothers’ or infertile couples returning to India in search of surrogates, there are now roughly 3,000 clinics that provide in vitro fertilisation in India. Every year, the country sees anywhere from 100 to 300 surrogate pregnancies, making it the surrogacy capital of the world. Taking on such a sensitive topic is no easy feat, but Syal’s powerful novel is underpinned by female friendship, motherhood and love. Armed with the unique ability to connect with her audience through compelling, honest storytelling, Syal’s novel draws the reader in with Shyama’s familiar perception of modern India and identity, taking the reader on an emotional journey alongside the novel’s protagonist. Speaking on the release of her long awaited third book, Syal commented: “The support for the book has been overwhelming, I can’t thank everyone enough for coming to the launch tonight. In particular, the response to the sensitive and often taboo topics the book explores has been really encouraging. “Divorce, interracial dating, surrogacy, sexual violence and the complex politics of the fertility industry, once hidden, now spark urgent debate and I hope the book will add another layer to this ongoing conversation.”

BollyMob hits London Dancers bring fun and surprise to city’s streets

ENTERTAINING: BollyMob UK is made up of over 50 dancers who surprise bystanders with their ‘pop-up’ performances

There are some things you expect to see when walking through the streets of London from historic landmarks to famous faces, people from all over the world descend on the capital to experience the city. One thing you may not be expecting however is to suddenly feel the urge to dance, yet that is exactly what one group of dancers have been doing to bystanders this past week. The BollyMobUK group began with just six dancers in landmark locations across the city before they were joined in the routine by what seemed like members of the crowd. Dancing and moving to catchy Bollywood tunes, the group aimed to inspire others to join in

with the ‘joys of dancing’ in the big city. Alia Kapoor, speaking on behalf of the group, explained where the idea for the flashmob came from. “The BollyMobUK is simply an idea driven by our sheer love to perform by making others happy by surprising them with our highly energizing performance,” she said. “If we’ve managed to inspire any single person to get up and dance that would be wonderful, even if they’ve never danced before. “Combining indo contemporary and modern movements with strong ballet grounding and performance-based visuals our performance worked a treat for everyone who was watching - at various

locations across London, which included Tower Hill, Liverpool Street, Southbank and Wembley Central to name a few.” The London-based group is made up of mainly students from the Shiamak Davar’s ‘The Dance Academy’. Alia added: “Just like food is the spice of life, dance is the magic, which transcends cultures and brings together people in a way like never before. “So with our little boom box we descended across the capital to treat the public to surprise performances with more than 50 of us.” Look out for the BollyMob next time you are in the capital and get your toe tapping to some good old fashioned Bollywood hits.

Make criminals pay for their court costs New legal aid reforms will ensure those accused of a crime will cough up the cost of their case and assets frozen

The Butterfly Room AsianExpress.co.uk

June/July 2015 - 1st Edition

New measures to make criminals, rather than hard working taxpayers, pay more towards their legal bills have come into force, Legal Aid Minister Shailesh Vara announced. The changes are the latest in a package of legal aid reforms which make sure those accused of a crime and are wealthy enough to pay for some, or all, of their legal representation do so. The Legal Aid Agency (LAA) is expected to be able to order recovery of up to £2million legal aid a year on average as a result of today's changes to the Proceeds of Crime Act. Legal aid costs can now be recovered from convicted criminals where their money and assets had been frozen by the courts under this law. Previously legal aid did not qualify for recovery from those assets, and so the only way to force criminals to pay up was through a separate, often unsuccessful, court battle after the criminal trial was finished. The new law change allows legal aid to be recovered once other compensation and confiscation orders have been made. Legal Aid Minister Shailesh Vara said: “Too often people convicted of crimes have been able to avoid paying what they owe. Legal aid is taxpayers' money and it is right we do not spend it on those who can afford to pay their own costs. These measures will make sure legal aid is repaid, and are another vital step in creating a fair and credible system.” Under the Proceeds of Crime Act those accused have financial assets identified which are then 'restrained' by the court meaning they cannot be spent or moved by the person who has been charged until their trial is over. If they are convicted these assets can then be used by the court to pay compensation to victims or to make confiscation orders. From 1st June the new regulations will mean any finances left after those

payments are made can now continue to be restrained if the person also still owes unpaid legal aid bills. In appropriate cases the court can now allow the LAA to use these remaining assets to cover any outstanding legal aid costs or contributions. The changes are the latest in a series of moves to make sure the wealthiest who can afford to pay for their own defence costs are not unfairly leaving the taxpayer to pick up the bill. In January 2014 a financial eligibility threshold of £37,500 or more annual disposable household income was introduced for Crown Court cases so that the richest defendants are no longer automatically provided with legal aid upfront at public expense. This would typically be defendants who have at least £3,000 in disposable income, after they have paid key costs like tax, housing and childcare costs and other essential outgoings every month. This means the LAA no longer have to fight to get the money back after their trial.

The issues of domestic violence and abuse towards women in Asian cultures as well as LGBT discrimination are two of the central themes touched on in author Saurav Dutt’s new novel ‘The Butterfly Room’. “In light of the explosive ‘India’s Daughter’ documentary, it is more relevant than ever to explore certain trenchant and deeply rooted cultural taboos within Indian and Asian societies,” said Dutt. “The issues of women’s rights, domestic violence, and abuse, as well as homophobia and LGBTI discrimination are not isolated to South Asia or India, and that is why I wanted to explore them in this book.” To compile the novel, Dutt interviewed survivors and their families who were impacted by abuse and discrimination. Their personal stories are at the heart of the novel, as the author seeks to shed some light on these cultural taboos. Proceeds from the sale of ‘The Butterfly Room’ will benefit a number of

charities that offer assistance to survivors and victims of homophobia, LGBTI discrimination, and domestic violence and abuse. Those charitable beneficiaries include Refuge the United Kingdom’s largest provider of specialist domestic

violence services, as well as Southall Black Sisters, Women’s Aid, Stonewall UK, and Amnesty International. “I feel it is important to give back and help raise awareness of these vital, concurrent issues, and to work in hand with charities to do so,” added Dutt. In addition to his indepth research which included working alongside survivors and victims, Dutt credits the Joyful Heart Foundation’s ‘No More’ campaign as a source of inspiration for the novel’s philanthropic endeavour. His humanitarian efforts follow suit of the sale of Dutt’s last novel, ‘Broken Sky’, which saw the author donate proceeds to a variety of worthy causes benefitting stroke, homeless, and brain injury awareness charities. ‘The Butterfly Room’ is scheduled for exhibition at leading international book fairs following the release. It is now available for sale via Amazon, iTunes, Barnes & Noble, and Waterstones.

Inquiry urged

June/July 2015 - 1st Edition

LAUNCH: Hundreds of guests attended the launch event last weekend in Birmingham for the Anzal Begum Foundation

Did Keith Vaz breach codes of conduct to help a wealthy Indian businessman looking to move to the UK? QUESTIONS RAISED: Leicester East MP Keith Vaz helped Indian Premier League founder Lalit Modi secure travel documents

Anzal Begum In memory of

An Inquiry has been urged into immigration help that Leicester East MP and former chairman of the House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee (HASC) - Keith Vaz gave to a wealthy Indian businessman looking to move to the UK. The parliamentary standards commissioner will be asked to consider whether Keith Vaz breached codes of conduct by intervening to help the Indian Premier League founder Lalit Modi secure travel documents. It has emerged Mr Vaz wrote to director-general of UK visas and immigration Sarah Rapson to ask if the tycoon's travel papers could be made available. No one has responded from Mr Vaz's office on why he lobbied officials on Mr Modi's behalf. Tory MP for North West Leicestershire, Andrew Bridgen will now ask parliamentary standards commissioner Kathryn Hudson to look at the matter. Mr Bridgen said: “As part of his role as chair of the HASC, Mr Vaz is entrusted with scrutinising and holding immigration officials to account. “By seeking to lobby the same officials on behalf of an individual who is not his constituent, there are questions as to whether Mr Vaz created a conflict of interest.” Mr Vaz, who is seeking reelection as HASC chairman, has issued a statement on his

website. It does not refer to Mr Modi, but says: "In the past year, over 270 people living outside my constituency have contacted me in my then capacity as chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee. “A huge volume of cases have reached my office as a result of committee work, and there is a duty to deal with these cases in a courteous and helpful manner.” Mr Vaz said 42 cases had been referred to other MPs, and 230 were taken up directly with the Home Office, either to the Passport Office or to Immigration and Visas in the past year. He said: “The majority of these cases were following the passport crisis of last summer. “I expected people to contact me about problems with the immigration system and other matters. “I actively encouraged people to bring to my attention examples of delays, inefficiencies and problems with the immigration system. “This is in the public interest if we are going to get a system that works. “Last year, during the passport crisis, I publicly called for everyone with a passport issue to write to me. “I then took up all the cases referred to me, copying the letters to the relevant MPs. “Even after referral, many MPs asked me to continue to take on the cases.”

“By seeking to lobby the same officials on behalf of an individual who is not his constituent, there are questions as to whether Mr Vaz created a conflict of interest.”

Cancer spread ‘trigger’ discovered

New therapies to stop the deadly progression of breast cancer in its tracks could stem from a fresh study into the disease, researchers believe. Scientists at the University of Edinburgh said they have discovered a "trigger" that allows breast cancer cells to spread to the lungs. They found that blocking those signals in mice with breast cancer "greatly reduces" the number of secondary tumours found in the lungs. The researchers hope their findings may one day translate into new treatments to stop the progression of breast cancer within the human body. The majority of deaths from breast cancer are said to be caused by the tumour spreading to other parts of the body, with the lungs often among the first organs to be affected. Researchers at the university's MRC Centre for Reproductive Health investigated the role that immune cells called macrophages play in helping cells from the original tumour to spread. Their previous research has shown that breast cancer cells need the support of macrophages to invade the lungs and set up secondary tumours.

The team's latest research found that macrophages require signalling molecules called chemokines to communicate with breast cancer cells. But when scientists blocked these signals in mice, they found the number of secondary tumours in the lungs was reduced by up to twothirds. In addition, blocking the signals helped to stop the cancer cells getting into the lungs from the blood stream, and hindered those that did get into the lungs from establishing themselves and forming new tumours. Human cells appear to use the same chemokine signals to communicate with each other, prompting researchers to hope that their findings may translate into new treatments to stop breast cancer spreading to other parts of the body. Targeting a signalling molecule called CCR1 may result in fewer unwanted side-effects for patients while stopping the spread of breast cancer cells, experts said the results suggest. Centre director Professor Jeffrey Pollard said: "Our findings open the door to the development of treatments that target the tumour microenvironment, which may stop the deadly progression of breast cancer in its tracks."

Degree of uncertainty

To become a law minister there are certain credentials one must have, with perhaps the most obvious being some sort of qualification in the field of law. In India, New Delhi’s law minister, Jitender Singh Tomar, was arrested on Tuesday 9th June, after he falsely claimed to have achieved a law degree while representing a political party with an anticorruption platform. His arrest is the latest embarrassment for the Delhi government, run by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), or Common Man Party, which won power in February, in

one of the largest election victories in India's history. “Our investigation showed that the minister submitted a fake law degree in the election affidavit and had also obtained a licence to practice as a lawyer,” said Deepak Mishra, special commissioner of New Delhi police. Telephone calls to

Tomar seeking comment went unanswered whilst an AAP spokesman later on Tuesday told Reuters Tomar had resigned from his post. The minister's qualifications became a topic of controversy after lawyers from the Delhi Bar Council made a police complaint seeking to examine his college degree. AAP supporters accused the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of orchestrating the arrest on trumpedup charges following clashes over the right to appoint senior bureaucrats and police officials.

NEWS The East Lancashire based disaster relief charity, AlImdaad Foundation, has taken the proactive step to assist the people of Gaza, Palestine, with the rebuilding of East Gaza. Over 200,000 residents currently require assistance, as they are forced to live in either tents or schools after their homes were destroyed in recent conflicts. Gaza Strip is one of the most densely populated places in the world with 1.8 million people living in an area of just 365kmsquared. Palestinians are still suffering from devastating economic and social conditions after the Gaza war and ongoing blockade since 2007. Repairing homes, which have been destroyed, or rebuilding demolished houses is a very difficult task and financial burden for the local people. With the blockade in place affecting the importation of building materials, prices have soared, whilst high unemployment levels in the city make it incomprehensible for most families to be able to afford such materials and labour. Al-Imdaad Foundation has now begun the rebuilding process in marginalized areas, lying on the east of Gaza city such as Al Shejaeya, Al Tufah, Al Daraj, Shaaf and Jabalya that have suffered offensive and unfair attacks. The number of residents in these areas equate to more than 200,000 people, with most unemployed, poor and living

As well as the poor health conditions, most families cannot bear the heat in the tents even though the summer is yet to come. Country Director of AlImdaad Foundation UK said: “Wherever humanity is need of assistance our teams will assist and make a difference, the Rebuild Gaza Campaign has been in plans for the past six months and now we have been granted permission we will start our work with generous support from around the world.” Al-Imdaad Foundation have recently assisted the earthquake victims in Nepal with medical and food aid, whilst the team recently delivered a £20,000 Dialysis machine to their local Blackburn Royal Hospital. I am overjoyed with the response that the film has received in India and abroad. I thank everyone who has contributed to this film and made it such a large success,” Irrfan said in a statement. The new park includes a biological preserve, a safari, a zoo, and a theme park type setting and of course unprecedented close access to real, living dinosaurs. Jurassic World, which also

Irrfan Khan beats all previous box-office Khan records stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, is set at the same location as Jurassic Park. It is a direct sequel to the runaway 1993 hit.

Irrfan’s impeccable performance in the film has been appreciated worldwide and now he’s prepping up for Dan Brown's ‘Inferno in Budapest’.

The IIFA recognises both the artistic and technical excellence of professionals in Bollywood's Hindi cinema and always holds its awards ceremony outside of India to demonstrate Bollywood's international appeal. "The way Indian movies are shot - filled with glamour, beautiful dance and music - is making people from Europe, China and Japan attracted to it with great interest," Mumbai-based director Shyam Shroff said. "Day by day all our traditional markets are growing by leaps and bounds. The next target of Indian movies should be the mainstream Americans," he added. The starry fiesta began with the Bollywood celebrities sparkling on the green carpet as fans screamed and clapped with excitement. Actress Padukone was in a maroon and gold embellished sari while Sharma was a red siren in a strapless gown. Many of the actress opted for black, including Sinha in a backless dress and Parineeti Chopra whose strapless frock boasted an impressive train. The awards were anchored by Bollywood's funny duo Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. The pair drew big laughs with their witty repartees especially when they forced Bollywood hunk Sonu Sood to remove his shirt revealing his toned physique. The two talented actors captivated Bollywood fans by aiming their jokes at actors Anil Kapoor and Jacqueline Fernandez, as they also took a stab at censorship. In February Indian police registered a case against the pair for singing a reworking of a song with the Hindi word for penis substituting some lyrics, in a case that sparked a furore over freedom of expression. This year's event spanned three days and included film and music workshops, fashion shows, fans meet-and-greets, technical awards and media briefings of forthcoming movies. With a viewership of almost 800 million, the IIFA Awards is India's biggest media event and also one of the world's mostwatched annual entertainment shows.

FILM: Tanu Weds Manu Returns OU T NOW DIRECTED BY: Aanand Rai GENRE: Comedy STAR CAST: Kangana Ranaut, Madhavan, Jimmy Shergill, Deepak Dobriyal

FILM: Dil Dhadakne Do OUT NOW DIRECTED BY: Zoya Akhtar GENRE: Drama STAR CAST: Ranveer Singh, Shefali Shah, Anil Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Priyanka Chopra, Rahul Bose

The sequel to the hit 2011 comedy brings the main actors and director back together for another slice of comedy gold. Four years after Manu met and wed Tanu in the hit original film (titled, unsurprisingly, Tanu Weds Manu), the lovable couple are back. Not only are the original stars back, with Kangana Ranaut as Tanuja 'Tanu' Trivedi and Madhavan as Manoj 'Manu' Sharma, but the original film's director, Aanand Rai, is back too. Although the pair are now settled in London, Manu is busy working hard and Tanu is bored. Horribly homesick, Tanu decides to fly back to India, but is closely followed by her beloved husband. The only problem is though, when Manu returns to India, it's Tanu's doppelganger - a Haryanvi athlete! - that he meets and falls in love with. Kangana Ranaut and R Madhavan are reprising their quirky-sweet roles in this romantic drama which, the actress says, will show the tricky grounds of a marriage. “I hear so many love stories every year but no one wants to go to the tricky grounds of a marriage. What we all see is happy ending and not what happens after marriage and what it takes to fall in love again,” says Kangana. “This film will convey that. It’s an urban, relatable issue and a beautiful love story. It can easily be a real life story.”

A dysfunctional Punjabi family embark on a cruise holiday around the Mediterranean in this new romantic drama by director Zoya Akhtar. Family differences are exposed on the high seas as businessman Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor) and wife Neelam (Shefali Shah) take their son Kabir (Ranveer Singh) and daughter Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) on a cruise holiday. After Kabir reveals his plans to become a pilot rather than taking over the family business, salvation comes in the form of Farah (Anushka Sharma), who has left home to pursue her dream of becoming a dancer. Also featuring in the all-star ensemble cast are Farhan Akhtar, who plays entrepreneur Ayesha's ex-lover, and Rahul Bose, who makes a special appearance as her estranged husband.

FILM: ABCD 2 OUT NOW DIRECTED BY: Remo D Souza GENRE: Drama STAR CAST: Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Allu Arjun, Prabhu Deva, Lauren Gottlieb, Raghav Juyal, Dharmesh Yelande, Remo D Souza ABCD 2 is a grand 3D Dance Film, which travels to the vibrant city of Las Vegas and is a bittersweet journey of love, friendship, betrayal, honour and redemption. The story traces the journey of an Indian dance troupe, a motley assortment of boys and girls who come from the backstreets of a Mumbai suburb; their rise to fame, sudden downfall and then their heroic attempt to seek vindication by regaining their lost glory and pride. The sequel to one of India's biggest dance movies of all time takes the troupe to the international stage. After the enormous success of India's first 3D dance film, ‘ABCD’ (Any Body Can Dance), Disney India and world-renowned choreographer turned director Remo D'Souza are promising bigger thrills and spills for the sequel. Reuniting the two lead stars (Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor) with their mentor Vishnu (Prabhu Deva), the story follows the Indian dance troupe to Las Vegas for an international dance competition. But with the stakes higher and much tougher competition, can the boys and girls from the Mumbai suburbs go back to India as champions? Will they be able to achieve success at the biggest International platform? Will they make their beloved Vishnu Sir proud, who is himself struggling with his not so perfect past?

Driving business forward in the Black Country ‘Lean, capacity to innovate, and succession planning are the keys to business success’ - This was the cry from guest speaker Jindy Khera, at the Black Country Asian Business Awards held at the Wolverhampton Racecourse on Friday 19th June. The MD of the £200 million turnover company, KTC Edibles, based in Wednesbury explained how the family owned business had survived through three recessions by keeping their overheads lean and operating on a low cost basis. He also emphasised the importance of succession planning and giving key employees a stake in the company through share options. KTC Edibles has grown from a single retail outlet in Walsall to one which now has sites in Liverpool and Wednesbury employing over 300 personnel and evolving from manufacturing edible oil to drinks and snacks. The overall key to success, Mr Khera argued, was persistence, understanding your cost basis, and employing technology to maximise your return on capital. The 14th BCABAs celebrated businessmen and businesses which had been singled out for their outstanding contribution to their industry sector. Hosted by BBC presenter Tommy Sandhu, the night was full of entertainment with music provided by Amarun Johal. Money was also raised throughout the night by the 500-

plus guests in attendance with a total of £5,000 eventually donated to the Promise Dreams charity. The main award winners on the night were the family owned ‘Gill Group’ - a national company with offices in the Black Country and Birmingham. Operating in different sectors such as civil engineering, aggregates, aviation, builder’s merchants and insurance, the firm’s headquarters are a stone throw away from West Bromwich Albion FC and generate a turnover in excess of £50 million employing over 200 people. Its private jet operation carries celebrities, including premiership football teams such as Manchester City, Liverpool as well as her

majesty the Queen. Mr Ninder Johal, who is stepping down as Chairman of BCABA and who is also the President of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce and a Black Country LEP Board member, spoke about the positive growth of the UK economy over the last five quarters and how businesses should look to maximise the opportunities available to them in an ever increasing global marketplace. He referred to the need for the Government to create an environment conducive for businesses to operate in, asking for a reduction in the regulatory environment and an increase in the incentives for businesses to invest in Research and Development.

Play it again T

he Court of Appeal has criticised a district judge for failing to give any adequate reasons for his ruling in an adverse possession claim. In doing so, and by a unanimous verdict, the Court of Appeal allowed the defendant’s appeal and ordered a re-trial. Using well established principles, the Court of Appeal examined the way the district judge had concluded his findings of fact at the trial and found that in essence he had blindly accepted the claimant’s evidence whilst simultaneously blindly ignoring the defendant’s. Even more concerning was the fact he had failed to give any reason as to why he had done so. Usually the Court of Appeal will not consider an appeal relating to a trial judge’s factual findings and it will only do so where it is clear that either there was no evidence to support those findings; that the judge misunderstood the evidence before him; or that the judge made findings which no reasonable judge in the circumstances could have made. The Court of Appeal judges reiterated the importance of the trial procedure given that the role of a trial judge is to properly evaluate and test the evidence put before them, before reaching a balanced conclusion which is then clearly set out for the parties to review in a written judgment. In the recent case of Weymont and Weymont –v- Place which came before the Court of Appeal the Judges found that the trial judge had: • Failed to explain why he had decided that

certain factual evidence carried no weight and discounted the defendant's evidence for no good reason: • Not clarified the matters in dispute or referred to the relevant law; and • Accepted certain evidence uncritically without addressing its inconsistencies Going further, Lord Justice Patten stated: "...there is not one sentence in which he makes any specific findings of fact or gives the reasons for doing so”. The issue concerned a Mr and Mrs Weymont who had sought damages in the tort of trespass and an injunction in respect of the use of some parcels of land surrounding a farm house owned by Mr Place. Mr Place had contended that the land came within his registered title, or, in the alternative that both he and his father had acquired the title by adverse possession. However, finding against Mr Place, the trial judge dismissed both Mr Place’s witness and expert evidence without giving a reason for doing so. The Court of Appeal confirmed that a trial judge’s role in testing the factual evidence at trial should include “making a reference to the issues in the case, the legal principles or tests which have to be applied and to why, in cases of conflicting factual evidence, the judge came to accept the evidence of particular witnesses in preference to that of others.” Further, he stated that the importance of the trial judge reaching a “balanced and objective” conclusion was imperative to the trial process. Beginning production in late 2016, the Ford GT hits the road in select global markets to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ford GT race cars placing 1-2-3 at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. The all-new GT supercar features rear-wheel drive, a 3.5 litre mid-mounted engine, and a sleek, aerodynamic, two-door coupe body shell. It is propelled by the most powerful EcoBoost production engine ever - a next-generation twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 producing more than 600 horsepower. The bombshell beauty makes extensive use of lightweight materials, including carbon fiber

Forty years on from the unveiling of its first ever mid-rear-engined V8 model, the 308 GTB, the Prancing Horse opens a new chapter in its 8cylinder history. The turbocharged Ferrari 488 GTB - successor to the much-loved 458 Italia, provides track-level performance that can be enjoyed to the full even by non-professional drivers in everyday use. Giving us a generational shift, its new eight-cylinder, mid-engine sports-car standard-bearer is an insane-revving, naturally aspirated V8 retired in favor of a turbocharged unit. This follows Ferrari’s recent promise that all of its future engines will be turbocharged or hybridized. The new engine is smaller than its predecessor, and its displacement of 488 cubic centimeters per cylinder gives the car its name: 488GTB. Multiplied by eight, that works out to 3902 cc for the new 90-degree V-8, which is mated to, as was the 458’s V-8, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Despite the 0.6-liter reduction in displacement, the new engine makes more power: 661 horsepower at 8000 rpm, versus 597 horsepower at 9000 rpm for the 458 Speciale. Torque, predictably, is greater as well, reaching 561 lb-ft at a low 3000 rpm, far eclipsing the 458 Speciale’s 398 lbft. Like the screaming, naturally aspirated 458, the 488 uses an engine with a flat-plane crankshaft that should help it retain the “seductive soundtrack” that Ferrari promises. Variable Torque Management helps get the power all the way to the rear wheels posthaste. Ferrari claims that the superquick seven-speed transmission will enable the engine to hit the rev limiter in fourth gear just six seconds after the car leaves from a stop.

and aluminum - enabling outstanding acceleration and handling with improved efficiency. Ford's commitment to and capability in delivering technologies typically offered only in elite vehicles is evident in the GT. These include advanced active aerodynamics, such as a deployable rear spoiler, and a host of material and technology innovations to help better serve the driver, such as SYNC 3 - the latest version of Ford's advanced connectivity system. Few innovations provide a more wideranging performance and efficiency advantage than reducing weight. All factors of a vehicle's capabilities - acceleration, handling, braking, safety, efficiency - can improve through the use of advanced, lighter materials.

The all-new Ford GT features advanced lightweight composites, which will help serve Ford's entire product lineup moving forward. With the broad application of structural carbon fiber elements, the GT will exhibit one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any production car. Anchored by a carbon fiber passenger cell, the GT features aluminum front and rear subframes encapsulated in structural carbon fiber body panels. Carbon fiber is one of the world's strongest materials for its mass enabling an ultra-stiff foundation for chassis components, while creating a lighter overall package for increased dynamic performance and efficiency. EcoBoost engines power a growing number

of Ford performance models, including the new Mustang, just-announced F-150 Raptor, as well as Fiesta ST and Focus ST. Based on the same race-proven engine architecture serving Ford's IMSA Daytona Prototype endurance racing efforts, the nextgeneration twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 in the GT features a wide powerband with impressive time-to-torque characteristics. The engine demonstrates remarkable efficiency - a key attribute of its endurance racing-derived powertrain, where exceptional performance combined with efficiency is a critical competitive advantage. The twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 will be paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle for near-instantaneous gear changes and exceptional driver control. While it shares a legacy with classic Ford racing and performance cars, GT is a fully contemporary and functional shape that communicates modernity and pure beauty. "The GT is the ultimate execution of an enthusiast supercar," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. "GT includes innovations and technologies that can be applied broadly across Ford's future product portfolio - another proof point that Ford continues raising the performance bar while ultimately improving vehicles for all of our customers." The dramatic supercar will be delivered to the first customers at the end of 2016 and is expected to be priced at around £250,000.

Ferrari’s turbocharged 488GTB is a generational shift of much-loved 458 Italia

Smoke ‘em The extra oomph shaves only fractions of a second from the official Fiorano lap time compared with the latest and greatest iteration of the 458, the Speciale A (which just debuted last fall). The 488GTB gets around Fiorano in 1:23.0, a halfsecond quicker than the Speciale A. The two cars both claim a 3.0-second zero-to-62-mph time. As speeds increase, however, the 488GTB shows its advantage, reaching 124 mph in 8.3 seconds, compared to its forebear’s 9.5. Aside from the revolutionary

change affecting the redheaded beauty under the plexiglass cover, the specs indicate that the 488GTB otherwise hews closely to the formula that has been so successful in the 458. The shapely new body is 1.6 inches longer than the 458 Italia’s, 0.6 inch wider, and identical in height. Ferrari says the new car has less aerodynamic drag but creates 50 percent greater downforce (stated as 717 pounds at 155 mph). Large, body-side air intakes are split into two sections and are supposed to reference the original mid-engine, eight-cylinder Ferrari, the

308. Among the 488’s airflowmanaging elements are an “Aero Pillar” on the front end, “vortex generators” underneath, and active flaps in the rear diffuser. A “blown spoiler” (trickle-down Formula 1 technology) funnels air in through a wide channel at the base of the rear window and out the back of the car, just above the license plate. Ferrari’s quoted “dry weight” (at 3020 pounds) is 22 pounds lighter than it cites for the standard 458 Italia, with 53.5 percent pressing down on the rear wheels. (The forged

20-inch wheels themselves save 18 pounds.) For reference, the lightest 458 Italia we’ve weighed tipped our scales at 3325 pounds in road-ready trim. Inside, there’s much that looks familiar, with the photos showing aggressively bolstered, Daytona-style seats, conventional knobs and switches (no touch screen here), and a complete absence of column stalks. The multifunction steering wheel includes buttons even for lights, wipers, and turn signals, in addition to the damper setting, engine start, and Ferrari’s manettino chassis-control switch. Viewed through the steering wheel is the large, central tachometer with digital gear indicator, and it’s flanked by configurable screens. New seats and door panels are designed to make the interior more humane. A fresh key design mimics the shape of the engine’s intake plenums and permits passive entry and starting. Optional carbon-fiber trim can cover various parts of the interior (and the exterior aero fillips); also optional are a telemetry system like that in the LaFerrari and a 12speaker, 1280-watt stereo. One of the more intriguing bits of technology is Ferrari’s Side Slip Angle Control. It debuted on the 458 Speciale but this time around is “more precise yet less invasive” which is how we generally like things. It harnesses the electronically controlled rear differential, the traction control system, and now the electronically controlled dampers to enable greater tail-out antics. First, though, you’ve got to get your hands on one. There’s no word yet on pricing, but for reference, Ferrari currently asks around £160,000 for a 458, so figure something north of there. For those special customers deemed worthy, deliveries of the 488GTB start in Europe in July.

vibration at higher engine speeds, the engine's crankshaft features eight counter weights. Last, intake and exhaust systems are optimized for Alfa Romeo 4C Spider's mid-engine layout. A new generation turbocharger features a pulseconverter exhaust manifold to exploit pressure waves and boost torque at low-engine speeds. A waste gate valve adjusts turbo pressure and improves the engine's efficiency. Advanced turbo technology enables the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider to maximize torque at low engine speeds and deliver more response to driver input by increasing combustion efficiency and turbine speed, all while eliminating turbo lag. As a result, torque delivery is instantaneous, with a peak of 258 ft.-lb. (350 N•m); 80 percent of which is available at only 1,700 rpm. Instantaneously optimising the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider's level of performance is the brand's innovative Alfa DNA selector. With four modes, including "Race" mode, the Alfa DNA selector can optimize the engine, transmission, Alfa Electronic Q2 differential and electronic stability control (ESC) calibrations to the levels needed by the driver. With a touch of the Alfa DNA selector, the driving dynamics of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider can be changed to (in order of increasing capability) ‘All-weather ‘, ‘Natural’, ‘Dynamic’ and ‘Race’. In ‘Race’ mode, launch control can be activated, allowing the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider to deliver 0-to-60 mph acceleration blasts as low as 4.1-seconds.

DEBUT: The new Lexus GS F will be driven in public for the first time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (26th to 28th June)

GS F!!! Dynamic European debut for new V8-powered Lexus The latest Lexus to carry the marque’s F performance designation will give a first European demonstration of its speed and handling on Goodwood’s famous hillclimb course, with Toyota Gazoo Racing pilot Mike Conway at the wheel. The V8-powered machine will be a poised performer, having been dynamically honed on the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife during its development programme. Although the confines of the Goodwood hill won’t permit a full-blooded drive, the car’s sound, turn of speed and sharp-

edged styling promise to make a big impression. The festival date follows the car’s world debut at the Detroit motor show earlier this year and first European appearance at the Geneva motor show in the spring. In the best traditions of Lexus’s F models, such as the LFA and new RC F coupe, the GS F is designed and engineered for exceptional driver rewards. Although based on the GS saloon, it benefits from significant revisions to sharpen its performance and handling. The body shell is reinforced, the suspension is sports-tuned and Lexus’s

Torque Vectoring Differential – first seen on the RC F coupe – is fitted as standard. Under the hood will be a fire-breathing naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 that produces a remarkable 477PS and peak torque in excess of 530Nm. The powerplant is mated to a lightning quick 8-speed automatic gearbox with manual-shifting capabilities and four different modes: Normal, Eco, SPORT S and SPORT S+, the latter designed specifically for the racetrack. With the GS F tipping the scales at a class-leading 1830 kg, the acceleration of the new rear-wheel-drive sedan will be similar to a sports coupe, while its top speed should give some racecars a run for their money. As powerful as the engine is, the DOHC 32-valve powerplant is also fuel efficient, incorporating the Atkinson cycle when the car is driven in a civil manner. The GS F’s Goodwood bow is an early preface to its appearance on the road; details of a production version for the UK will be announced later in the year. Lexus will further add to the festival’s programme of rare and exclusive machines with appearance from the LFA supercar and the RC F GT3 competition car that is being campaigned this season by Frey Racing in the VLN endurance series in Germany.

Desirable The XJ, Jaguar's all-aluminium luxury saloon, is more desirable than ever, with subtle changes to the exterior design, accentuated by full LED headlights, add to the XJ's already distinctive looks. Materials such as semi-aniline leather and inlay veneers enhance an interior already considered the most luxurious in the segment, culminating in the new Autobiography model. Matching this traditional craftsmanship is state-of-the-art technology, including a new infotainment system. InControl Touch Pro offers features such as door-to-door navigation and 1,300W Meridian digital audio system. The driving experience is better than ever, thanks to a V6 diesel engine which offers more power and torque and less fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and an electric power-assisted steering system that enhances Jaguar's reputation for unrivalled agility and responsiveness. The new XJ features a larger, more upright grille, while sculpted chrome blades in the outboard air intakes emphasise the car's mature, prestigious character. The full LED headlights accentuate the 'quad lamp' design feature that Jaguar sporting sedans have made their own. They are further enhanced with active front steer and static bend lamp functions, and auto high beam assist. LED headlights also provide a colour temperature closer to that of daylight than BiXenon lamps, improving visibility and driver comfort, and are also more energy-efficient. Twin 'JBlade' daytime running lights are a unique feature to XJ, befitting its status in the Jaguar saloon car range. The white light instantly and seamlessly changes to orange when the direction indicator is operated. The LED rear lights feature a new J-signature tail and position

light graphic, making the XJ even more distinctive. The rear bumper now features a gloss black valance and a slender chrome insert. New LED taillights and oval exhaust finishers complete the look. The XJ's peerless interior design has been taken to the next level. So luxurious has it become that the outgoing Portfolio trim is now used for the Premium Luxury model. The new Portfolio gains quilted soft-grain leather seats with diamond stitching and embossed headrests, and figured ebony veneer. The Autobiography model, new to XJ in the 2016 model year and available only with the longwheelbase body, can be identified on the outside by chrome front bumper air intakes and 20" Maroa wheels. Inside, there's a unique Autobiography Intaglio,

quilted semi-aniline leather seats with contrasting stitching, a leather headliner, rich oak inlay veneer, and illuminated stainless steel treadplates, air vents and boot finisher. Rear seat occupancy is provided by individual seats with seat back movement and massage function, and a rear seat entertainment system with two folding 10.2" HD screens. Following other Jaguar models, the XJ gains an R-Sport model with new side sills, three-piece front splitter, side power vents and a rear spoiler. A gloss black finish enhances the grille mesh, rear valance and the window finishers. Wheels are 20" Mataivia. The interior gains sports seats, R-Sport steering wheel and treadplates, Jet headliner and piano black trim or carbon fibre.

Gambhir aims for international return

Table Tennis ace serves up two national titles

India’s ‘forgotten batsman’ Gautam Gambhir says he is looking to revive his career on the world stage after slipping out of the international fold last year. The 33-year-old is currently training in Perth under the tutorage of former Australia test batsman Justin Langer, working on finetuning the skills that made him the world's number one test batsman in 2009. Ghambir was dumped from India's one-day squad in early 2013 and played the last of his 56 tests in England last year. The Delhi southpaw has led the Kolkata franchise to two Indian Premier League (IPL) titles but is keen to return to international cricket. To fulfil that, Gambhir has landed in Perth to train under Western Australia coach Langer, also a former left-handed opener.

CHAMP: Despite slipping in the semifinals, Shayan still managed to hit a remarkable match point against his opponent. (Image courtesy of Andy Chubb)

Singles and Doubles championships sealed for Yorkshire teen

A table tennis star from Bramhope rallied his way back from a disappointing national finals defeat last year to clinch a double championship finish earlier this month in Sheffield. 14-year-old Shayan Siraj picked up both the National Singles and Doubles titles for his age group after an exhausting day’s play at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Saturday 6th June. Shayan started his day in the individual competition, and after progressing from the group stage, made it through the next three rounds, which all went to five sets.

The final was especially tense, as Shayan came back from 0-2 and 8-10 down, determined not to end as runner-up for the second successive year at these championships. Holding on through three very close games, with never more than four points separating the players, Shayan won his first ever national title and denied his opponent, the newly crowned under-13 champion, Ethan Walsh, a double victory. “I’m so relieved,” Shayan said. “In my last three matches, I was so close to losing them all. “I just kept fighting and going for my shots and tried not to think

about losing. If you lose playing the right way, that’s still a good thing to come away with.” Despite the victory, it was almost game over for Shayan in the semi-finals as he appeared to be slipping when approaching what would of have been his winning shot. Thankfully for the youngster, he managed to play the shot from a virtual sitting position, and despite falling managed to right himself and get the next ball back – to the evident shock of Dai, who failed to hit the table. He added: “I just slipped. I thought I had missed but I saw the ball come back so I just put my bat there. I don’t think he was expecting it.” Later in the afternoon, there

was a sense of déjà vu in the doubles final, as Shayan and his partner James Smith from Kent went 0-2 down against Harry Dai and Ethan Walsh. Once again, Shayan came back from the brink as he and James rescued the match to win the last three games by a convincing margin and make it Shayan’s second title in one day. The promising teen had qualified for the national championships due to his UK ranking, and was seeded fourth for the competition. He has been playing table tennis since the age of seven, and has represented England in a number of competitions, in singles and with his doubles partner James Smith.

South Korea's Choi Na-yeon used her trusty eight-iron to great effect over the closing holes of the Arkansas Championship on Sunday, finishing eaglebirdie-par to claim her second win on the LPGA Tour this season. Choi, who won the opening event of the season in Florida, trailed local favourite Stacy Lewis by a stroke with three holes to play but leapfrogged the American by holing out from 142 yards for an eagle at the 16th. Lewis, playing in the group ahead, missed a short downhill putt on the par three 17th then bogeyed the final hole for a three-under 68. Choi once again pulled out her eight-iron on the 17th and stuck it close enough for a tap-in birdie. A par at the last sealed a 15 under total for the 54-hole event, giving her a two-shot win over Japan's Mika Miyazato. Lewis finished tied for third three shots behind.

Questions raised over future of World Championships The curtain fell on the inaugural European Games on Sunday with the status of Baku as a capable host of a major sporting event enhanced but with a shadow hanging over the future of the continental competition. Opinion was divided when Azerbaijan was announced as host of the games in 2012 with serious questions surrounding its human rights record. There has been little criticism, however, of the show they have put on, with little expense spared and widespread praise for the lavish venues and infrastructure. Questions remain about the strength of the competition, however, and the absence of top athletes has led many critics to suggest the event has little future in a saturated sporting calendar.

Time to impress India second string heading to Zimbabwe

ANOTHER BOXING DISAPPOINTMENT – ADRIEN “THE PROBLEM” BRONER By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk

This past weekend two of boxing’s brightest stars were matched against each other in a highly anticipated boxing bout as Shawn Porter (26-1-1 16KO) managed to get a unanimous decision in Las Vegas against Adrian Broner (30-2-0 22KO). Broner a three weight world champion had insisted that Porter fight him at a 144 pound catch weight, despite Porter usually fighting at the heavier welterweight limit, but Porter still managed to beat up and embarrass Broner on the way to a huge victory. Broner produced a very disappointing boxing performance as he grabbed during the clinch and held onto Porter for the majority of the fight even though he managed to produce some last minute drama by dropping Porter with a decent left hook but Porter managed to get to his feet and continue fighting. Broner prior to the fight had been the main attraction and the “A side fighter” in boxing terms. He has earned a reported 1.35 million dollars compared to Porter’s lesser amount in this bout. Despite the second unanimous beating Broner has taken he has still failed to realise the

Khalil Alam

magnitude of this loss as he continued to down play the occasion and tell the interviewers he was financially stable. It is hard to believe that earlier in Broner’s career he had been considered as one of the undefeated rising stars of boxing and successor to the best boxer on the planet Floyd Mayweather. The loss to Porter will have a detrimental impact on Broner and I expect Broner’s earning power to be severely dented. It is time he stopped playing the entertaining rich clown and concentrated more on his boxing potential. I still feel that Broner has great boxing ability and had he fought with the same urgency throughout the fight as he did in the last round when he managed to knock down Porter he could have potentially won this fight. Broner known as the “problem” is just that with his crazy antics inside and outside of the ring and continued disturbing, offensive comments during post fight interviews and his recent rant on social media where he has posted a picture of himself with a fake gun is just part of his bizarre world. As a fighter Broner has recently looked unprepared for his opponents and one has to question his maturity to listen to his coach and trainers during a boxing bout when he is losing the fight. I strongly feel that Broner is not capable of winning fights at welterweight and he should move back down to his natural weight where he had his earlier boxing successes and great wins. The fact that he nearly lost a decision to an almost retired Paulie Malignaggi, was then beaten up by Marcos Maidana and now lost convincingly against Porter proves my point.

BELIEF: India’s chief selector, Sandeep Patil, says the whole Indian cricket board has faith in Ajinkya Rahane (pictured) ahead of the July tour of Zimbabwe

India’s incredible squad depth will be put to the test next month as Ajinkya Rahane leads a secondstring side to Zimbabwe for three one-day contests and two Twenty20 Internationals. The Mumbai batsman has been selected to head the team amidst the resting of a number of senior internationals, including usual captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Ravichandran Ashwin have also been left out of the squad following the national side’s recent 2-1 series ODI series defeats in Bangladesh. Amongst the names included in the line-up is off-spinner, Harbhajan Singh, who last played for India in June 2011 after making over 200 one day appearances for the national side. Chief selector, Sandeep Patil, insisted that the squad was picked with one eye on next year’s Twenty20 World Cup in India, urging the 15-man team to take advantage of their opportunity in front of them. He added: “We are confident of Ajinkya's ability [to lead the team] and want him to do well. “We're very happy the way his career is shaping up. He is one of the most consistent batsmen we have.” 27-year-old Rahane has played 55 ODIs since debuting in the 50-over format in 2011, hitting over 1,500 runs and top scoring with 111 off 108 balls against Sri Lanka in 2014. Patil continued: “That's why we want to see his other aspects. We have given him this opportunity and we'll definitely back him.” Although no specialist glovesmen have been included in the squad, batsmen Robin Uthappa, Kedar Jadhav and Ambati Rayudu, are all able to keep wickets. Meanwhile, Manish Pandey and Sandeep Sharma are the only uncapped players in the ODI side. The ODIs kick off at the Harare Sports Club on 10th July, followed up on the 12th and 14th, whilst the Twenty20 Internationals will be held at the same venue on the 17th and 19th June.

The Hulk’s return

Force India take ten points from Austrian GP

Living up to last season’s record points total was always going to be difficult for Formula One constructors Force India yet there was certainly a familiar feel to last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix. Nico Hulkenberg sealed his best finish of the season in sixth spot, taking home eight points, whilst teammate Sergio Perez chipped in with two more thanks to his ninth placed finish. It was roles reversal this time around for the two drivers who last season also ended in sixth and ninth, with Perez taking the higher tally of points that time around. Last Sunday, on a tricky track in Spielberg, which saw four cars retire as well as Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso crash out without even finishing a lap, Force India looked back to their best throughout the race. Brazilian Hulkenberg was even unfortunate not to take fifth place, following an enthralling two-way contest for the position throughout with Williams’ Valtteri Bottas. Speaking after the race, the upbeat driver

SUCCESS: After a difficult season to date, Nico Hulkenberg earned his best finish of the Formula One campaign in Austria, taking home eight points in sixth position

said it was important to have taken another ‘step forward’ in this year’s campaign. “I’m very satisfied with sixth place today,” he said. “Going into the race we always knew it would be difficult to keep the Williams of Bottas behind me, so bringing the car home in sixth was probably the maximum we could achieve. “I had some good wheel-to-wheel battles with him and we swapped places a few times, but it was hard to match their absolute pace. “Overall it’s been a great weekend: I found a nice rhythm and I have been very happy with the performance of the car.

“With Checo in the points as well, it’s been an excellent weekend for us and we can be proud of what we’ve achieved. It’s an important boost ahead of Silverstone where we hope to make another step forward.” Nico Rosberg eventually came home in first spot, followed inevitably by Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton whilst Williams’ Felipe Massa completed the podium lineup. Next up for the drivers is a trip to England for the Silverstone Grand Prix where Hamilton will be hoping to make it back-toback victories on his home track.

Bronze in Baku Ashfaq clinches Euros medal and sets sights on Olympics CHAMPION: Ashfaq was competing in the European Games for the first time in Baku, Azerbaijan (pic: Twitter)

Leeds’ boxing ace, Qais Ashfaq, says he is ready to clinch Gold next year in Rio, after picking up a Bronze medal at the European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, earlier this week. The bantamweight competitor was unfortunate to lose out on points to Belarus’ Dzmitry Asanau in the semifinals yet remains upbeat about his chances in the Olympics. Speaking after the bout, he said: “I wasn’t feeling my best today. I tried to put that to one side and I thought it was a good fight. A close fight as well. “It was exactly what I expected but like I said, I wasn’t feeling myself today. Even warming up I wasn’t feeling 100 per cent but that’s part of the experience and I’ll come back stronger and by the time

the Olympics comes round I’ll win that gold medal.” The 22-year-old had overcome Georgia’s Giorgi Gogatishvili in his opening bout on 17th June, before victories against Turkey’s Selcuk Eker and Omar El-Hag of Germany, secured him his spot in the final four. The contest with Asanau was anything but one-sided with both boxers hitting heavy blows to each other throughout. Ashfaq continued: “This is really my first major senior tournament apart from the Commonwealth Games, which isn’t that major. The more experience I’m getting the better I’ll become. “A couple of things didn’t go my way this week but it’s good to have the experience and I’m getting experience all the time. I wasn’t very well this week and another day I probably would have beaten him. “Three good performances this week and I’ll come back better and stronger. Hopefully he’ll win that gold and I’ll go to the World Championships – I wish him all the best.” With Bronze in the Europeans and Silver in the Commonwealths already secured, Gold at Rio 2016 seems the perfect way for Ashfaq to finish his collection.

BOXING: Qais Ashfaq picked up a Bronze medal in the European Championships, defeating Georgian, Turkish and German opponents on his way to the podium finish

“A couple of things didn’t go my way this week but it’s good to have the experience and I’m getting experience all the time. I wasn’t very well this week and another day I probably would have beaten him.”

Asian Express’ ‘Rick Manners’ caught up with Amir at his Bolton academy gym and asked him one simple question:

“WILL THE KELL BROOK FIGHT EVER HAPPEN?” RM: With reference to Eddie Hearn’s recent remarks on YouTube, what are your thoughts? AK: Whatever people say they can say. Obviously I have my own team and I’m my own boss. I make decisions my way. I’ve done it the hard way and I will keep doing it my way whatever people say. RM: If the Mayweather fight falls through, would you fight Kell Brook this year at Millennium muted for October/November 2015? AK: No, no, no. May be next year? I’m in an exciting division. We have big names there, the RM: Amir I’ve got just one more question for you. I’ve known you since the Paul McCloskey post fight press conference drama where it got quite heated with Eddie Hearn and his father Barry, way back in 2011. There was a slight sense of disrespect and animosity between the two camps at the time, Matchroom and Khan Promotions. As you know the situation now with Eddie Hearn and Kell Brook being on the internet saying all sorts of disrespectful stuff. Do you think it will be the same sort of situation like Ricky Hatton and Junior Witter when they both got personal. There was a lot of disrespect there. In the end they, Junior and his team, wound Ricky up so much that Ricky said at the time “you know what Junior I’m not giving you the opportunity to fight me.

likes of Tim Bradley, Lamont Peterson, Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia, Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto. I can pick and choose and still make lots of money. RM: What do you think when you hear Eddie Hearn and Kell Brook say you are scared of fighting Kell? AK: I’m not scared. Never scared. They want to mess around with Amir Khan, get me angry so they can get the fight made. And the only time they make it in the media, is when they mention Amir Khan otherwise nobody knows Kell Brook. The way I see it is, Kell Brook really wants the fight because he knows it is going to be the biggest pay day of his career. Also for him to get that pay day, he needs to make it happen before he gets beat by somebody else, a decent fighter. I don’t think he wants to fight anyone in the top ten who is going to be dangerous. Because he knows he’s going to get beat but he doesn’t mind getting beat by me because he knows there’s going to be big big money that comes with it. Look at it as a business move and it is a very smart business move that Kell and his team would be making because they know it is going to generate millions. The thing is for me it’s gone past the money side or titles stage, it is all about building a legacy for me and having the big fights I want.

AMIR “KING” KHAN ANSWERS THE KELL BROOK QUESTION IN DEPTH We are boxers and both deserve a degree of respect so you aint going to get this fight.” Amir do you think we are going to end up with a situation like this between you and Kell Brook? AK: Yes it is going that way. Like when Ricky Hatton had the arguments with Junior Witter. They (Kell and Eddie) think they are giving the boxing fans what they want. But they are doing it the wrong way. They need to do it the professional way, the proper way. That is why the fight is not going to happen. They keep disrespecting and making it about me not wanting to fight and taking it personally and stuff. They need to let it happen itself naturally without forcing it.

“I’M NOT SCARED OF KELL BROOK, I’M JUST NOT INTERESTED”

Khan rejects Kell Brook’s big fight offer this year Amir ‘King’ Khan, fresh from his 12 rounds point victory over New Yorker Chris Algieri, has told Asian Express Sports Columnist, Rick Manners, Kell Brook is not even on his radar. Ahead of a possible showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jnr, the Bolton boxer knew that a win in New York’s Barclays Centre last weekend would keep him in the

running for the mega bout, however a loss would mean an end to the dream of fighting the world’s finest marquee fighter. And yes Khan managed to claim victory on Friday 29th May. Khan controlled the fight

from start to finish and even though Algieri pushed Khan hard in the early rounds of the fight, achieving some successes by connecting and catching Khan with some great right hand power shots, Khan cleverly manoeuvred his way out of trouble to secure 115113, 117-111, 117-111 for a comfortable and decisive points win.
