MISSING: The London ‘Straight A’ students (L-R) Kadiza Sultana,16, Shamima Begum,15, and 15-year-old Amira Abase told their families they were going for a day out before travelling to Syria

British teens ‘married’ to Syrian IS militants The families of two of the British schoolgirls who went to Syria are ‘grieving’ as confirmed reports state that their daughters have married militants in the wartorn nation. The three east London schoolgirls, Shamima Begum, 15, Kadiza Sultana, 16, and Amira Abase, 15, fled Britain to join Islamic State on 17th February. After telling their parents they were going out for the day, the Bethnal Green Academy pupils boarded a flight from Gatwick to Turkey. They later entered Syria and are thought to be in Raqqa, the self-styled capital of the socalled Islamic State. The lawyer representing their families has confirmed the marriages of two of the girls. Tasnime Akunjee would not say which of the girls had married and said there was no information about the status of the third girl. He also confirmed that the two girls had contacted their parents to say they had been married to what they called ‘approved’ IS men in their 20s in ceremonies approved by IS authorities. Mr Akunjee said the girls had contacted their families ‘some weeks ago’ to tell them of the marriages, which took place ‘some time ago’. He added: “The families learned that the girls were not together in Raqqa three months ago, and it was because two of them were married. “They are distraught, because it doesn't bode well for their return. The girls are starting to grow roots socially, and deep roots.” He said the news had dashed any hopes the families may have had that their daughters might return.

He added: “It has caused a lot of distress. “It entrenches their lives in Syria, rather than in Britain. “It erodes significantly hopes that they will come back.” The girls, who had been

discount a video released online which claimed to show the three girls walking around the city carrying automatic rifles. He said that, at the time the video was shot, two of the girls were known to be married and

This has led Mr Akunjee to

TRIBUTE: The permanent memorial to the victims of the 7th July, 2005 London bombings is situated in London's Hyde Park

Peace ambassadors The 10th anniversary of the 7th July 2005 attacks in London comes at a particularly gloomy time when we are mourning the loss of innocent British lives in Tunisia. Hoping to inspire unity, 15 young people from different faiths have traced the steps taken by three of the four 7/7 bombers, travelling 200 miles from Leeds to London to mark the landmark anniversary of the bombings. The Leeds Peace Ambassadors, a new initiative, brought together young people from different backgrounds from Leeds – a city that was home to three of the four bombers. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and those of no faith aged 18 to 25 laid flowers at King’s Cross and visited the Hyde Park memorial to the 52 victims of the attacks. They also visited Finchley Reform Synagogue in north London, which opened its doors to Muslims after the local Somali community centre was burned down , and learnt about Muslim-Jewish relations since. The group will relay their experiences at a community Iftar (breaking of the fast) on the 7th July at Elland Road football stadium - breaking bread together and sharing a meal as a symbolic gesture of the relationships that exist between the communities. Through sharing food, hearing

stories and developing a plan for social action, community leaders hope the Ambassadors will develop confidence, leadership and understanding of different cultures.

“The 10th anniversary is first and foremost about remembering those lives lost or changed forever. But it is also an important moment to reflect upon the last 10 years and how the threat of extremism is

A journey from Leeds to London marks 10th anniversary of 7/7 Qari Asim, Imam of the Makkah Masjid in Leeds, also took part in the trip and reflected on his memories of 7/7. “For me as a Yorkshireman and a Muslim, it was particularly sickening and painful that three young men from my dynamic city, Leeds, and belonging to my peaceloving faith had committed these appalling crimes,” he said.

affecting us in Leeds and the British public. “The decade that has followed the 7/7 attacks has been an anxious one for Britain. But none of us want fear and hate to win. Even on the horrific day of 7/7, Leeds showed a magnanimous spirit; it was clear we would refuse to let terrorists win.”

VOICES: Sabbatical officers for the Leeds City College Student’s Union, Zahir Abbas (left) and Shamrez Akhtar were amongst the crowd of protestors in Leeds on Tuesday

‘Save adult education’ Protestors gather to campaign against government cuts By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

‘Stop cuts to education’ was the message being echoed on The Headrow earlier this week as around one-hundred protestors gathered in Leeds to voice their concerns over government funding. Organised by the University and College Union (UCU), the visual demonstration was held from around midday on Tuesday 30th June, with teachers

supported by students and members of the public. Amongst the crowd were sabbatical officers, Zahir Abbas and Shamrez Akhtar, from the Leeds City College Student’s Union. They joined the protest in support of adult education – one of the areas hardest hit by recent cuts. Zahir explained: “Everyone has a right to education and the government should not be making it harder for people over 18 to have access to learning.

BUSY: Around 100 people came out to show their support against cuts to adult education services in the UK

“We are here to show that we will not stand for this and unite with the people here today.” Since 2010, the adult skills budget, which funds nonacademic learning and training (university-based), has been slashed by 40 per cent. As well as voicing concern over nationwide cuts, protests were also held outside Bradford College earlier in the morning before joining the Leeds contingent later in the day. A dispute over cuts at the college resulted in staff demonstrating outside their Great Horton Road-based buildings in the morning. Two separate college strikes, at Barnsley and Mid-Cheshire, were called off at the eleventh hour after striking deals with the respected places of education. UCU general secretary Sally Hunt, said that strike action was always the last resort but supported the action of Bradford’s members. She said: “Colleges are experiencing some financial difficulties at the moment, but the answer is to work with us to explore all the options available – not axe staff. “We are pleased Barnsley and Mid Cheshire colleges responded positively today and strike action won’t be necessary there. “Members will be walking out at Bradford College though, and then making their way to Leeds for a regional rally in defence of further education. “Strike action is always a last resort but, in the face of redundancies and lost opportunities, members feel there is no other option.”

A 12-year old boy from Bradford has received a prestigious award in recognition of the courage he has shown while battling against a rare form of cancer. Hasan Sankriwala was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a cancer which affects the retina of children predominantly under sixyears-old, when he was just one. Sadly Hasan’s right eye had to be removed by doctors at the specialist Birmingham Children’s Hospital to save his life prior to undergoing chemotherapy. Although able initially to still see through his left eye, a detached retina has since left him with extremely limited overall vision and he is now registered blind. Despite everything Hasan, who attends Hanson Academy, rarely complains and lives an active, happy life. He has even learned

how to ride a bicycle and climb trees. In recognition of his outstanding efforts and bravery Hasan has now been named a CHECT Champion by the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT). The CHECT Champion awards aim to recognise the courage, resilience and patience shown by all children affected by retinoblastoma (often referred to as Rb for short) throughout treatment and beyond. “Throughout everything Hasan has remained positive and developed the approach that he can accomplish anything he sets his mind to,” says proud mum Shahnaz Sankriwala. “He is always happy and ends up giving all of us a lift with we are sometimes down. “He’s been an inspiration to everyone around him with his attitude and thoroughly deserves this award. We are very, very proud of him.” CHECT has three vital

missions – to offer one-to-one support for families and individuals affected by retinoblastoma, to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms to prompt earlier diagnosis, and to help fund research into the disease. The CHECT Champion awards are sponsored by Credit Suisse with each child receiving a medal together with a framed certificate and goody bag. Chief executive of the charity, Joy Felgate, said the awards were a great way to commend children who have already had to overcome difficulties in their lives. “Every child affected by retinoblastoma faces huge disruption, upset and distressing treatment not to mention followon check-ups,” she said. “We are delighted to recognise the courage, resilience and resourcefulness shown by Hasan throughout his treatment. He really is a thoroughly deserving champion.”

GIVING: Money raised throughout the five day car wash fundraiser will go towards providing meals for children in Eastern Sudan via Charity Right’s ‘Million Meals’ campaign

Car wash DRIVES charity forward

Family business to raise funds in memory of Bradford father

MEMORY: The family of Haji Ghulab Din hope to raise money in memory of their father’s generosity

A family business will pay tribute to their late father during the last five days of Ramadan as they host a special fundraiser in aid of Charity Right. Last year, businessman and entrepreneur, Haji Ghulab Din, sadly passed away after building up his own car valeting service in Bradford, with the help of his family. A keen advocate for charity, Mr Din always expressed his wishes to one day have a continuous charity outgoing from his company, known as a ‘Sadaqah Jariyah’, and now his family are determined to turn his vision into reality. During the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, a fundraising car wash will be held at the business premises of Prestige Car Valeting where money raised will be going to charity. Work is already underway to transform the site ready for the five-day event with extra staff being brought in to ensure the car wash will prosper. Mr Din’s son, Sajid, says the whole family are determined to fulfil their father’s wishes this month so he can receive the rewards from his vision. “We are preparing balloons, banners, and much more material for the fundraiser,” he said. “We want to make this a real success. “We need the event to really flourish, not for us, but for Haji Ghulab who came up with this concept before his passing. “Also, as it’s Ramadan, we are certain that Allah (pbuh) will put blessings in this and help us in this noble cause.”

FUNDRAISER: The charity car was will be held during the last five days of Ramadan

In the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims believe that any good deeds performed are multiplied without measure, and therefore are more inclined to increased acts of worship; with charity being amongst the most important of these acts.

The sponsored car wash is being run on behalf of the Bradford-based Charity Right an international food programme providing food to the most vulnerable people in the world. Funds raised over the five days will provide 10,000 meals for the hungry in Eastern Sudan in support of Charity Right’s ‘Million Meals’ scheme launched recently, alongside the ‘Team400’

countries globally. If you would like to get involved with the charity, either personally or as a business, please visit www.charityright.org.uk, email info@charityright.org.uk or call 01274 400 389. A slice of the action MPs back national Cake Appeal

YUM: MP for Bradford East, Imran Hussain, and Bradford West MP, Naz Shah, showed their support for the #Cakes4Syria campaign last weekend

Two Bradford MPs showed their support for one of Ramadan’s most socially active grassroots campaigns last weekend as they praised the positive contribution of young British Muslims. The #Cakes4Syria campaign aims to raise funds for Islamic Relief’s ‘Syria Crisis Appeal’ by delivering £10 chocolate fudge cakes to people’s doorsteps the country on around and Sundays Wednesdays throughout the holy Islamic month. The project provides local communities not only with a treat with which to break their fast, but also an enjoyable way for families

July 2015 - 1st Edition to support those caught up in the Syrian crisis. The campaign has yet again proven to be a resounding success this year as within ten days over 2,500 cakes had been sold, raising in excess of £25,000 in the process. On Sunday 28th June, Bradford MPs Naz Shah and Imran Hussain visited the Cake Campaign HQ, in the city centre, to praise the work of the young fundraisers. Mrs Shah, MP for Bradford West said: “The #Cakes4Syria campaign is an incredible campaign that would not have come about if it were not for young people in Bradford and now across the country wanting to make a difference. “We hear on a daily basis about the tiny minority of Muslims who travel to Syria, but rarely do we hear about the thousands of young people who are channelling their concern for the victims of this brutal conflict through the vital support that charities provide. “We should be championing these young men and women and I hope people will join me in supporting this worthy cause by ordering a cake today.” Imran Hussain, MP for Bradford East, added his praise for the positive contribution from young British Muslims to society. “I am really happy to support this campaign,” he said. “In the holy month of Ramadan it is really heartening to hear about such a positive initiative driven by young people in Bradford. “At this time it is especially important that we celebrate the positive contributions that young Muslims are making and so I

whole-heartedly applaud this initiative by #Cakes4Syria.” Since 2011 the Cake Campaign has expanded nationwide and gone from strength to strength. It employs over 1,000 now volunteers, delivers to more than 1,000 UK postcodes, and generates over one million social media interactions. Despite the success, officials from Islamic Relief say they are still concerned with negative connotations surrounding Muslims in the UK. Last week a YouGov poll commissioned by the charityrevealed that the words most associated with Muslims were terrorist and terrorism. Zia Salik, Islamic Relief’s National Community Fundraising and Volunteer Manager, said she initiatives like hoped #Cakes4Syria would help show the ‘true heart of British Muslims’. “This campaign was born of young British Muslims wanting to make a positive change for the millions caught up in the Syrian crisis – which has left a staggering 16 million people in need of humanitarian aid,” he said. “Every day we are bombarded with stories about British Muslims being linked to terrorism, despite the numbers involved accounting for a tiny 0.02 per cent of the Muslim population. “I hope this initiative will really demonstrate the true heart of British Muslims. Like most people in Britain, we are appalled at the suffering of the Syrian people and want to help provide the food, shelter and medical aid they so desperately need.”

Remembering: 10 years on from 7/7 London bombing victim returning to Leeds for 7th July anniversary

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A survivor of the 2005 London bombings made an emotional visit to Beeston earlier this week as she was reunited with a community champion to commemorate ten years since the 7/7 attacks. Gill Hicks lost both her legs following the Kings Cross blast on 7th July, when Jermaine Lindsay detonated

a bomb, killing himself and 26 others. After fighting for her life, she recovered and now walks on two prosthetic legs, living in Australia and working as a global peace ambassador with her own not-for-profit organisation - M.A.D for Peace. Last week, she met with chief executive of the Hamara Healthy Living Centre, Hanif Malik, for the first time in over five years. An emotional reunion took place at the Beeston-based centre where Mr

DEVASTATION: 56 people lost their lives whilst many more were injured following the worst UK terror incident since 1988

Malik said both were ‘holding back the tears’. “The word ‘inspiring’ can be overused in some cases but Gill is truly one of the most inspiring people there is,” he said. “To meet her again after all these years was overwhelming. It was very emotional and I think we were both holding back the tears. “We worked together on collaborative projects following the London bombings and she is an amazing person. Her work on social cohesion has to be admired.” A decade has now passed since the 7/7 attacks, in which four men detonated bombs across London, killing 56 people (including the four bombers) in total and injuring many more. Two of the men – Mohamed Siddique Khan and Shahzad Tanweer – had lived in Beeston and previously used the services at the Hamara Centre which supports the community. The local area came under scrutiny from international media following the attacks yet Mr Malik says the community continues to stand together against acts of terror. “There is no getting away from the fact that two of these perpetrators were from this locality,” Mr Malik added. “What has been highlighted, however, in the years that have followed the attacks, is that their actions are not representative of Beeston, they are not representative of Leeds, and they are not representative of the Muslim faith. “Whilst this area has received a lot of bad press, the overwhelming majority of the community are law-abiding citizens living normal lives. “We are talking about the absolute smallest numbers of two or three people who have carried out these attacks compared to the tens of thousands who continue to live as a cohesive community. “It is reassuring to see how well this community has stuck together and grown stronger in the face of adversity.” This week marks ten years on from the bombings with the nation set to remember the 52 individuals who lost their lives in what was the UK’s worst terrorist incident since the 1988 Lockerbie Bombing. A host of events will be taking place across Leeds which will bring different faiths and communities together to mark the date.

“The word ‘inspiring’ can be overused in some cases but Gill is truly one of the most inspiring people there is.”

Fundraising trek to raise funds for young Leeds patients SUPPORT: Zayna’s mum, Najmah, is hoping to raise funds through a sponsored walk for children and their families being cared for at Leeds General Infirmary’s Childrens Dialysis Unit

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A Bradford mother, whose daughter underwent a successful kidney transplant last year, is hoping to help other children currently undergoing dialysis by organising a sponsored walk. Najmah Iqbal has arranged for the event to take place later this month in an attempt to raise funds for families who are being treated at Leeds General Infirmary. Najmah’s daughter, Zayna, who suffers from global development delay, was first diagnosed with kidney disease in 2010 and eventually suffered complete renal failure two years later, forcing her to undergo dialysis three-to-four times a week. After an agonizing three years on the donor waiting list, a kidney was found for Zayna via a cadaveric donor just one week after her eighth birthday. Najmah says that although her ‘family’s prayers were answered’ she will never forget other children undergoing dialysis and is determined to help their whole families in whatever way she can. “Life on dialysis for children and their families is extremely challenging and emotional, your world is turned upside down,” she said. “It is difficult to relax or to go away for a break without the constant worry of blood tests,

hospital appointments, dialysis sessions to attend and above all the realisation that without dialysis our children wouldn't survive. “Not all people have family networks or support in place. Therefore, we would like to give some happiness to these amazing children and families, by raising money for the children who are still on dialysis or recently have undergone kidney transplants. “The money raised will be used to send the children and their family for overnight breaks or a day trip. Please give generously and let’s create some happy memories for these incredible children.” Zayna’s story was first highlighted in the Asian Express Newspaper in 2013 after an appeal for an organ donor was successful just weeks after Zayna

underwent her life changing surgery. Najmah says she was overwhelmed with the generosity of the public then and hoped people would get behind her latest fundraiser. “We as a family have seen firsthand how the hospital becomes your second home when your child is undergoing dialysis,” she added. “To be able to give people a break through a day away or shopping trip can be a huge help. I would ask everyone who is able to sponsor anything to do so, as every penny counts.” So far, over £800 has been raised by donations to the Just Giving page set up by Najmah.

If you would like to sponsor Najmah, or to read more about Zayna’s story, please visit www.justgiving.com/ zayna-Iqbalwalk.

CAMPAIGNER: Sarah Fishwick has helped organise protests and petitions for Raja and Mahmoud, and was reunited with the couple earlier this week following their release from Yarl’s Wood

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

After more than 100,000 people signed an online petition calling for Britain’s Home Secretary to stop the deportation of two Leeds residents, an 11th hour decision was made to the delight of many campaigners. On Friday 26th June – three weeks after being taken to Yarl’s Wood Detention centre, husband and wife, Raja Khouja and Mahmoud Alhassan, were freed from their confinement to protest their planned deportation. As the couple’s application for asylum has not yet been granted, they were facing the threat of being deported to Saudi Arabia on Thursday 25th June. 67-year-old Raja, an advocate

for women’s rights, has openly spoke out against the denial of women’s rights in Saudi Arabia previously and as such, has received threats of mutilation, imprisonment and even death by the nation’s Mutawa (religious police). Originally from Syria, Raja has never been to Saudi Arabia and has lived in Leeds for the past four years with her husband, after fleeing her war torn home. Upon being released from Yarl’s Wood, she thanked all the people who had supported her, and praised ‘the people of Britain’. “Today I feel I was born,” she said. “I feel that I have my freedom and life thanks to the British people - all my friends and all those who I have never met but who supported my case and

spoke out for me. “I run out of words to tell you how much I thank you. I have great respect and warm love to every one of you. “My message is to all my friends and to the world that the people of Britain respect and know what freedom, justice and human rights mean. “Having been detained and imprisoned I personally feel what freedom is. My dream is that all those countries round the world could have the same freedoms to campaign for justice and human rights that you have shown that you have used so well. “May God bless and protect the people of this country who have shown me love, respect and have given me my freedom and justice.” Raja and Mahmoud are

currently working with their legal team at Simpson Millar as the fight against their ongoing deportation order continues. Despite the deportation being turned down last week following a hearing at the immigration tribunal, specialist immigration solicitor, Emma Brooksbank, says the case is not yet over. She explained: “We now begin the process of seeking permission for Judicial Review of the decision to deport Raja and Mahmoud. “The process is by no means over, but we’re satisfied with the progress we’ve made so far and to have the support of more than 100,000 signatories to their petition on Change.org gives us a real boost that people share our resolve.”

Canal Conquerors CYCLE: 16 men from the Shipley Masjid Association completed the 130-mile challenge down the North of England’s longest canal

Amateur cyclists complete huge journey on two wheels

Local A team of 16 self-confessed ‘novice cyclists’ jumped on the saddles of their bikes last month to complete a 130-mile route in aid of a local faith organisation. Members of the Shipley Masjid Association (SMA) donned their helmets and cycling gear as they took on the canal Leeds-Liverpool challenge, tackling all types of terrain along the mammoth waterway. With many participants not even owning a bike, it was a new experience for most, yet one they said they would happily do again. “The bike ride itself was challenging. It was gruelling. It was beyond painful,” SMA President, Arnie Sajid, said. “It was beyond anything any of the cyclists had done before and as such, we each knew it would take a great strength of will and fortitude to complete. “But we knew it could be done. By the grace of Allah and the unflappable spirit of the cyclists, it would be done.” The sponsored bike ride is the first time the SMA has gone beyond the local community in its appeal for financial support. Setting off in Liverpool, the group passed through Wigan and onward to Burnley in their first day of cycling, covering almost 78 miles. Describing the journey as ‘unforgiving and treacherous’, Arnie added: “There was barely any track at all – it was as if no one had set foot on the

21

path in years. “One by one each cyclist arrived gingerly at the lobby of our overnight hotel in Burnley after clearly riding their hearts out. We had done it. Day one was over and it was time for us to finally rest and eat.” The second day proved even tougher than the first, as the team awoke to ‘stiffness’ and ‘creaking joints’ yet remained determined to complete the challenge with 58 miles left to go. Eventually arriving in Leeds after a six hour journey, the group finally dismounted from their bikes for a much welcomed rest. “Aside from a few falls, a couple of punctures and some very painful leg cramps, we arrived at our destination unscathed,” Arnie said. “It was over and we had accomplished what we had set out to do. I'm certain some of the cyclists cannot fathom still how they arrived at the end after completing almost 130 miles over the worst terrain they've ever seen. “The 'never say die' spirit, the need for a personal achievement, the cause for what this ride was intended for in the first place and our unrelenting faith in Allah, had eventually seen us home. We would do it again in a heartbeat.” If you would like to make a donation to the SMA please visit www.totalgiving.co.uk/ mypage/Liverpool2Leeds.

InTouch Iftaar Inspiring evening raises money for local charity ENTERTAINMENT: Nasheeds were performed on the night by Omar Esa

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

As Muslims across the world continue to fast throughout the holy month of Ramadan, iftaar events are bringing communities together as ‘bread is broken’ when the sun goes down. Last week, the first ever InTouch iftaars were held in Keighley and Bradford, with over 200 people turning out to support the local cause. Providing an opportunity for people to come together to break their fast, enjoy entertainment from renowned nasheed artists, and raise funds for the charity, it was deemed a huge success by organisers. Faisal Tariq is the UK Fundraising Manager for the InTouch Foundation. He said he was delighted with the turnout on both nights and explained the important role Ramadan plays in the Islamic faith. “We had an absolutely amazing response across both events,” he said. “In Bradford, the event sold out

within a few days and there were around 130 people who attended. “This year Ramadan is challenging with long fasts. While we fast, we experience what it must be like for those in need and that was the message we wanted to get across. “We as Muslims, and people of Bradford and Keighley, have a responsibility to be ‘in touch’ with those in need and provide them with the life saving meals.” Across both nights, Imam Alyas Karmani was tasked with the role of host and reiterated the constant message of ‘charity starts at home’, praising projects such as InTouch, and their mobile soup kitchen service. Footage of the charity’s work in the UK was also shown before Nasheed artists, Omar Esa and Ahmad Hussain, shared their melodious vocal talents with the crowds. Prior to the breaking of fast, those in attendance were asked to pledge a monthly donation to the charity which would help feed society’s most vulnerable across Bradford, Keighley and Leeds. With a number of pledges made, Faisal added that more meals can now be served up through InTouch and thanked all the people who helped make the iftaars a success. “I would like to thank all our sponsors, volunteers, the nasheed artists, our host and all those who attended as without them these events could never have happened,” he said. “We certainly had an amazing two nights. A special mention must go to two of our volunteers, who are not Muslims, after they fasted for a whole day before attending our event, to break their own fast with us.”

Royal praise for international charity PRAISE: Her Majesty The Queen commended the work of the Al Imdaad Foundation earlier this year

For the past 12 years, the Al-Imdaad Foundation has been dedicated to providing humanitarian services and aid to people of all cultures around the world. Working in crisis and noncrisis situations, the charity has helped the most disadvantaged orphans, widows and the destitute in their time of need, whilst continuing to promote sustainable economic and social development with work in local communities. To mark these achievements, Her Majesty The Queen penned a letter to the leading international aid relief and development organisation last month, praising the work carried out in over 65 countries. Written by Sonia Bonici, Senior Correspondence Officer of Buckingham Palace, the message was also forwarded to Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron by the royal representative. What perhaps sets the AlImdaad Foundation apart from the rest is their commitment to discharge (Zakaat) funds within 30 days, ensuring such aid is discharged according to the Shariah with professionalism and care. At every possible delivery of aid the team aim to provide

Muslim community to support local causes

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

In 2013, 500 gifts were donated. In 2014, 800 gifts were donated. And now, in 2015, the Give a Gift team is hoping to see that number grow once again as the great ‘Toy Appeal’ makes a welcome return. Set up as a charitable concept, targeted at getting British Muslims to ‘give back’ in their local communities, the Give a Gift scheme has grown year-on-year with a host of fundraisers. From hosting dinners to 10k runs, the events bring communities together in aid of local causes, Martin House Children’s Hospice and the

Children’s Heart Surgery Fund at Leeds General Infirmary. As well as raising thousands of pounds for the two worthy charities, it is the landmark toy appeal which has really propelled Give a Gift into the heart of many families. Collecting toys over the month of Ramadan, they are then wrapped up and hand delivered to children to celebrate Eid with children of all backgrounds and religions. Rifhat Malik, Give a Gift ambassador, has been part of the scheme since it was first established two years ago and said it is the smile on the childrens’ and parents’ faces, which makes it all worthwhile.

TEAM: As well individuals donating toys, schools have also been backing the toy appeal

“Over the past two years we have seen how generous the local community can be as they have donated well over 1,000 toys through the Give a Gift scheme,” she said. “This year, we are hoping to exceed previous numbers and pass the 800 mark. It will be a huge accomplishment if we can do it and so many children will benefit. “I would just urge anyone who wants to help a child this Ramadan to remember charity starts at home and there are causes right here on their own doorstep.” It isn’t only individuals who are being called on to get involved with this year’s toy appeal, as Dewsbury-based Carlton Junior School showed last week. Pupils managed to collect dozens of toys for the project as well as raising £250 – of which the school has pledged to double for Give a Gift. “It is projects like these in schools which can really help push the donations to new levels,” Rifhat added. “We are extremely thankful to Carlton Junior School and all who have donated so far.” Speaking about the impact the project has had on local families, chief executive of the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, Sharon Cheng, added: “At this time of year during Ramadan, when the presents are donated, it means so much to the children and their families, it is very overwhelming. “We are truly grateful for their support and so are so many of these families.” If you would like to make a toy donation please contact the Give a Gift team on 07734 882 116.

Councillors call for new strategy to combat radicalisation

Two council leaders from West Yorkshire say a new strategy to tackle extremism in the UK is needed because the current one is regarded as ‘damaged goods’. Councillors David Green, of Bradford, and David Sheard, of Kirklees, met earlier this week to discuss the matter of radicalisation in the regions following a number of high profile cases in recent weeks. Three sisters from Bradford disappeared last month along with nine children and are believed to have joined IS forces in Syria. Meanwhile, teenager Talha Aslam, from Dewsbury, became the UK’s youngest suicide bomber after an attack on armed forces near an oil refinery in Iraq. The two local councillors called upon the Home Office to develop a new strategy to replace the current ‘Prevent’ system, and urged it to have a ‘positive’ feel. Mr Green said: “As a scheme it has become regarded as damaged goods by the very people that we need to

un-CONTAINER-ble The appeal for donations is over and the time for action has arrived as a Bradford grandmother prepares to take on her latest aid mission in Africa. 55-year-old Razia Amini has spent the past year collecting all sorts of supplies from school uniforms to books, and sewing machines to computers, in anticipation of her trip to Burkina Faso in August. Last week, on Wednesday 24th June, the Heaton resident was given a helping hand as she loaded the huge collection onto a 40-foot long container, ready to be distributed in some of the world’s most remote areas. With the container expected to arrive in eight to ten weeks, Razia will join the cargo later this summer where she will help deliver and distribute the goods. Having already completed similar missions to the Gambia in recent years alongside the Humanity First charity, this year’s trip will be her first time in Burkina Faso. “To finally send off the container is a big achievement and I want to thank everybody who has donated or helped the appeal in some way,” Razia said. “We have previously only taken 20-foot containers but this year we have doubled the size of the donations which will hopefully help twice as many people. It is

literally full to the brim.” She added: “A special mention must go out to Queensbury School in Bradford and Huddersfield’s Almondbury Community School for their support.” Upon arrival, Razia and two other fundraisers from Humanity First are hoping to set up selfoperating ‘sewing centres’, taking with them 80 sewing machines and all basic equipment. “Our initial plan is to hire one member of staff,” she explained. “She will be trained in the field before she then shares her knowledge and skills to the group which will enable the site to run independently and selfsufficiently. “The products they make, and services provided, will help them earn a wage in an area of major

unemployment and also act as a safe place for the ladies.” As well as utilising the many sewing machines, Razia has also collected enough books to open her own mini library with more than 9,000 donated of every genre. These will be taken to schools alongside enough facilities to furnish at least four full classrooms and thousands of items of stationery. With toys, clothes and even medical supplies also included in the unit, Razia says she is now ready to take on the mission. “After all the hard work of collecting the goods, I am now looking forward to going out there in August,” she said. “It will be a new experience for me in Burkina Faso but one I hope to take full advantage of.”

The transition between primary and secondary school can be a daunting prospect for many children. With this in mind, one Bradford school has continued to take its proactive approach by welcoming the next generation of students to their premises with a special ‘Young Learners Day’ held last month. Year 5 students from Thornbury Primary and Dixons Marchbank, visited Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College where they experienced the excitement of science experiments, first-hand. The interactive lesson gave the youngsters a chance to take part in a whole new subject class, enabling them to gain an understanding of what they will experience when they leave primary school. The only school in Bradford to offer this experience to nine-yearolds, Laisterdyke not only aims to enthuse younger children about secondary school learning but hopes to diminish the fear younger children have of secondary school, believing it to be an intimidating environment. Jen McIntosh, Principal at the

school, said the initiative has always proved successful in the past and was delighted to see the children interacting so well on their taster day last month. “It was an extremely successful event with lots of positive feedback from the feeder school staff and students,” she said. “We do this every year to enable pupils to engage in the subjects they excel at in primary school at a high school level, the children find it incredibly inspiring not to mention exciting. “It’s also nice to see the children form new bonds and friendships with children from other schools – it’s all part of preparing them for the transition and makes it much smoother for them when the time comes.” Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College is a foundation comprehensive college with over 1,000 students on roll, including over 160 in post-16 education.

Children and families from East Leeds can expect an outstanding service at their local children’s centre after government inspectors were blown away in their latest review. The Templenewsam and Colton Children’s Centre has been judged as ‘Outstanding’ in every aspect during its first inspection by the regulatory body Ofsted. The centre, which was visited by inspectors last month, was assessed on their access to services, the quality of their practice and service, and the effectiveness of leadership, governance and management. It was deemed to be outstanding in every category. The inspectors described the centre as having an outstanding impact on families’ lives adding: “From helping to improve children’s readiness for school to supporting those experiencing domestic violence, staff are…always there.” The report highlights that all local children under five-years-old are registered with the centre thanks to ‘exceptionally wellplanned, thoughtfully targeted and persistent outreach work… combined with extremely close working with other professionals’. Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, executive member responsible for children and families said the centre’s staff should be proud. “This is an exceptional report and very well deserved,” she said. “The team at Templenewsam and Colton really do put the children and families in their community at the heart of everything they do. “This report demonstrates how impressed the inspectors were of

Husbands of missing Bradford family meet with Keith Vaz

MP calls for ‘new measures’ in fight against extremism

Britain’s chairman of the Home Affairs Committee, Keith Vaz, says the time for ‘finger pointing’ has passed and action must now be taken to deter British nationals from fleeing the country to join extremists abroad. The prominent MP made the announcement following a meeting on Monday with the husbands of two of the three Bradford sisters who are feared to have travelled to Syria with their children to join Islamic State. It is believed that Khadija Dawood, 30, Sugra Dawood, 34, and Zohra Dawood, 33, boarded a plane with their children - aged between three and 15, to Istanbul, Turkey, on 9th June, where they are likely to have then travelled over the border into Syria to join IS forces. Mr Vaz met with Sugra’s husband, Akhtar Iqbal, and Mohammad Shoaib, husband of Khadija, to discuss the case and how the UK can do more to prevent such events happening again. Following the meeting on Monday, the Leicester MP said in a statement: “I met today with the fathers and their legal representatives for one and a quarter hours. They were clearly heartbroken, and want to be reunited with their wives and children as soon as possible. “They expressed serious concerns about how the police have dealt with their wives over a number of months. I will be meeting with the

URGENCY: Leicester MP Keith Vaz says a 24/7 hotline between the UK and Turkey must be established to have the best chance of stopping possible runaway Brits crossing into Syria

Counter Terror Unit from the region tomorrow.” Mr Vaz says there are a number of new measures and legislation that must be implemented to deter others from crossing over to join jihadist groups. “Firstly, we need a hotline between the UK and Istanbul,” he continued. “Isis work on a 24/7 basis and our Consulate in Istanbul must also work continuously. “We cannot continue to rely on emails. Rather like the Bethnal Green case (which saw three

teenage girls run away to Turkey to join IS) , the system needs to cope better with these urgent cases. “Secondly, the police need to meet with the fathers at a senior level urgently to clear the lines of communication. “Thirdly, the prime minister is right that we must bring an end to the ‘finger pointing’. This is a fight for hearts and minds of British citizens being groomed by Isis. Our efforts need to be led by the families and communities.” In a letter sent to Mr Vaz last week, lawyers from Khan Solicitors – representing the husbands, slammed the police’s handling of the case, alleging they were ‘complicit’ in the ‘grooming and radicalisation’ of the three sisters. By ‘actively promoting’ contact from the sisters to a brother who was known to be fighting with Islamic State in Syria, the lawyers claim there was a disregard of the possible consequences. “It would appear that there has been a reckless disregard as to the consequences of any such contact on the families of those whom we represent,” the lawyers wrote. “Plainly, by the NECTU [North East Counter Terrorism Unit] allowing this contact they have been complicit in the grooming and radicalising of the women. “If this contact between them had been prevented our clients would not now be facing such circumstances.”

Startup business bus tour to visit Leeds Following a high profile Downing Street launch, national enterprise campaign ‘StartUp Britain’ has hit the road and will arrive in Leeds this week on the way to helping the number of UK businesses started in 2015 to reach a record 600,000. At the launch on Tuesday, surrounded by entrepreneurs, David Cameron announced that the target set for the government-backed Start Up Loans company three years ago of awarding 30,000 loans to entrepreneurs by 2015 has been achieved. 350 loans, worth £1.97 million have been made to individuals in Leeds and 2,319 loans, worth £12.23 million, to people across the Yorkshire and Humber region as a whole during this period. For a fourth year, the campaign is touring Britain with a bus full of startup experts and champions, to provide inspiration and support to

tens of thousands of aspiring entrepreneurs. As one of 25 stops across the country, the bus will be parked in Briggate from 10am to 4pm on Thursday 2nd July. Joining leading small business software company Sage as a headline sponsor of the tour, RBS is providing its iconic 1966 Routemaster bus, the NatWest Mobile Business School, wrapped with campaign branding to catch the eyes of passersby on the high street and on the open road. Government backed Start Up

Loans Company and Upwork, the world leader in online work, are also supporters. On board, the sponsors will be giving one-to-one advice and workshops to aspiring and early stage entrepreneurs, while local business organisations will provide mentoring and local guidance. The tour’s national partners include FSB, British Chambers of Commerce and UKTI, which recently launched the First Time Exporters Initiative to provide advice and support to help companies expand into

international markets. The bus will have made stops at Canary Wharf, in Newcastle town centre and Birmingham’s Centenary Square on its way to Leeds and will go on to visit Cardiff, Edinburgh, Inverness, Bristol, Brighton and Plymouth among many others. StartUp Britain director, Matt Smith said: “Since StartUp Britain launched in 2011 we have seen record breaking numbers of people each year starting businesses, showing that the entrepreneurial spirit within Britain continues to

grow. “By parking the bus in town squares across the country, we want to give people the confidence and inspiration to turn their business ideas into reality.” Start Up Loans is a £310 million government-funded initiative that provides startup support in the form of a repayable loan together with a business mentor for individuals hoping to start up a business across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Royal garden party invitation for Bradford legal eagle A Bradford lawyer celebrated the summer in style last month as she was invited to attend a very royal garden party. Ruby Bhatti, a highly successful consultant solicitor with 20 years experience in the legal field, was taken by surprise when an invitation arrived at her home from Buckingham Palace. Being ever-humble about her communitycohesion work, Ruby, who holds an impressive 17 public sector and third sector appointments, said that she was taken aback when she realised what the envelope contained. “I don’t why I got the invitation,” she said. “It was an incredible honour and I’m so proud that I could represent all the initiatives I support. It’s a day that I will treasure in my memory forever.” The legal ace continues to astound friends and family with her ability to balance her professional work with her numerous voluntary roles and of course her own personal life, showing commitment in everything she does. Over the past 18 years, she has gained experience in various non-executive directorships as well as being a chair of a number of primary schools and holding a position as a panel member for a number of organisations. Diabetes at all-time high in Yorkshire

The number of people living with diabetes has reached an all-time high - with tens of thousands of people in our region diagnosed with both type one and type two last year. The new figures announced at the start of Diabetes Week, have been extracted from official NHS data and shows an increase of more than 125,000 adults nationally compared to the previous year, bringing the total figure of diabetics in the UK to 3.9 million. Bradford has been identified as a hotspot for the disease with rates of diabetics higher than the national average.

Health bosses in Bradford have said that diabetes is the city’s “biggest health problem” as the sharp rise in diabetes cases in recent years continues. Many cases of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented – but there is no way of preventing Type 1. Diabetes education has come under criticism as health officials say not enough is being done to make people aware of the devastating health complications, including amputation, blindness and stroke that diabetes carries. Beyond the human suffering, diabetes costs the NHS nearly £10 billion, 80 per cent of which is spent

Many cases of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented – but there is no way of preventing Type 1

Find out more at www.diabetes.org.uk/diabetesweek, or search #DiabetesandMe on Twitter on managing avoidable complications. Bridget Turner, Diabetes UK Director of Policy, said: “Over the last decade we have seen the number of people with diabetes rising at an alarming rate, and these latest figures are a stark call to action – we must act now or face the very real danger of diabetes devastating the lives of even more people, and threatening to wreck the already over-burdened NHS. “There is a gaping hole when it comes to diabetes education because we know that most people newly diagnosed with diabetes are

not offered a group education course. This is despite strong evidence that giving people the knowledge and skills to manage their diabetes effectively can reduce their long-term risk of complications. “We must get better at offering education to people who are living with diabetes and help them to manage this serious, complex and often overwhelming condition. It is crucial that education is made available both at the point of diagnosis and beyond, as the education needs of people already living with the condition can change

over time. “Along with providing better and more flexible education options, local health systems need to focus on increasing the proportion of people getting the 15 healthcare essentials that everyone with diabetes should be receiving. Until we achieve these steps, we will continue to deny people living with diabetes of the best possible chance of living long and healthy lives. “This Diabetes Week, we are urging everyone with diabetes to seek out the support and education they need.”

Berries, Bagels and Shakes

Carried away T

he commercial court has provided useful clarification on the law of mitigation in the recent case of Thai Airways International Public Company Limited –v- KI Holdings Co Limited. In an interesting set of circumstances, the commercial court had to take a view on what the appropriate measure of damages was for a claim for breach of contract when a claimant had taken steps to mitigate its loss but in doing so had also received certain benefits. Thai Airways was the claimant airline and had contracted with the defendant, Koito, a Japanese manufacturing company for the supply of economy seats for some of its aircraft fleet. In breach of this contract, Koito delivered the seats late and further, failed to deliver some of the seats at all. In order to mitigate the loss that would have been incurred by Koito’s breach, Thai Airways had to store some of its fleet and purchase seats from an alternative supplier. Thai Airways also had to lease aircraft from a third party whilst their fleet remained in storage. Thai Airways claimed damages for Koito’s breach of contract and assessed their loss at $107 million, this being the cost of entering the aircraft leases. Koito’s position was that credit ought to be given for any benefits obtained from entering into these leases, such as any profit made during the period of the breach. The duty to mitigate applies to all claimants seeking damages for loss, and applies to claims for breach of contract and breach of duty. A claimant must also avoid taking unreasonable steps which would have the effect of

increasing its loss. The extent a claimant has attempted to mitigate their loss is considered in the award of damages a claimant may recover. A failure to mitigate may result in a lower award of damages i.e. a claimant cannot recover damages for any part of its loss that it could have avoided by taking reasonable steps. The commercial court held that it would be unlikely that Thai Airways would actually be able to quantify its lost profits due to the complexity involved in calculating their financial position and as a result of this they shouldn’t be penalised or prevented from recovering damages incurred in mitigating their loss. Thai Airways were awarded the full cost of the lease, calculated at $107 million, however the Judge rejected Thai Airway’s argument that it would be unjust to require them to give credit for a benefit they had no choice but to receive. In doing so, the Judge held that because Thai Airways had essentially made a fuel saving due to the reduced weight of the aircraft, Koito should receive credit for this against the damages they owed, even though Thai Airways had no alternative option at the time but to acquire the lighter seats. It could be argued that a decision in the alternative may have lead to Thai Airways obtaining betterment above and beyond the damages owed. The useful test laid down by the commercial courts in this case provides important guidance as to the law of mitigation and is a reminder that litigants should consider these principles should they find themselves let down by suppliers.

Muslim scholar releases ‘counterterrorism’ curriculum

A new ‘counter-terrorism curriculum’ is aimed at condemning terrorist ideology in UK schools has been released by an Islamic scholar. Pakistani politician Dr Muhammad Tahirul-Qadri hopes the ‘Islamic Curriculum on Peace & Counter Terrorism’ will dissuade young British people from joining terror organisations such as Isis, and has claimed his work is a ‘Jihad against Isis’. He now hopes the government will implement a mandatory ‘anti-radicalisation’ sector to the national curriculum. Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri has said: “This problem of radicalisation has not been properly tackled. “It should be on the curriculum. Peace should be taken as peace studies as a subject. Deradicalisation should be taken as a subject. Counter-terrorism should be taken as a subject.” He claims his curriculum draws on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ‘based on love, tolerance, coexistence and togetherness’, in order to dismantle what he considers the flawed ideology of terror groups. An estimated 700 Britons have left the UK to fight for the Islamic State, while David Cameron has criticised the UK Muslim community for ‘quietly condoning’ extremism.

IS flag waved in London

No charges against man draped in Islamic State flag

CRITICISED: Police spoke with the unidentified man before letting him walk on as he was ‘acting within the law’ PRESENTATION: Chief Constable of West Midlands Police, Chris Sims, presents his Young Person’s Award to Muhammed Ali

The topic of freedom of expression arose in the capital this past weekend after a father was pictured with his young daughter, waving the Islamic State flag outside the Houses of Parliament. The unidentified man, draped in the IS logo, was stopped and questioned by police, yet after being deemed not to have broken the law, was allowed to continue on his way. He was pictured outside Big Ben by tourists who vented their disbelief on social media, during the weekend before the tenth anniversary of the 7/7 terror attacks in London. The actions also came just over one week after IS claimed responsibility for the Tunisia beach shooting which resulted in the deaths of 38 people. Scotland Yard confirmed that officers spoke with the man regarding the Public Order Act 1986 yet no further action was taken. A spokesman added: “This man was spoken to by officers with consideration given to relevant legislation and a decision

was taken by officers at the time that the man was acting within the law. He was not arrested.' “Wearing, carrying or displaying of an emblem or flag, by itself, is not an offence unless; the way in which, or the circumstance in which, the emblem is worn, carried or displayed is such as to cause reasonable suspicion that the person is a supporter or member of a proscribed organisation. “While support of and membership of ISIS is unlawful it is not a criminal offence to advocate the creation of an independent state.” Despite not being charged, social media was rife with criticism over the actions. One Twitter user wrote: “How this scumbag draped in an #ISIS flag walking around #London has not done anything against the Law is beyond comprehension. Utter nonsense,” whilst another added: “Only in London would it be deemed okay to walk around with an ISIS flag wrapped round you. Our legal system is beyond useless.”

Police award for young hero Youngster stops criminals during robbery at family home A seven-year-old boy who stood up to robbers at his Birmingham home has been honoured by West Midlands Police - becoming one of the force’s youngest bravery heroes. Muhammed Ali showed courage beyond his years when he put himself between a group of seven raiders − who burst into the family home in Balsall Heath − and his mother from whom they were demanding Asian gold jewellery. The youngster was jolted from his bed on 2nd October last year when he heard the front door being kicked open. After heading downstairs he was

faced with the sight of his mother being rounded on by masked men before one of the raiders grabbed hold of his baby brother and threatened to hurt him unless she handed over valuables. Little Muhammed ran to his mum’s aid and shouted at the men to leave her alone − and detectives believe his actions threw the attackers on the back foot and moments later they fled empty handed. Birmingham East Police Chief Inspector Phil Radbourne, said: “It must have been scary but Muhammed’s first instinct was to run towards the men and to protect his

mum…his actions were extremely brave and undoubtedly left the burglars stunned. “Moments later they left empty handed and Muhammed, his mum and his baby brother all escaped unhurt, though they were understandably very shaken by the ordeal. “I’m delighted we’ve recognised Muhammed’s bravery with a Chief Constable’s Young Persons Award; he can be rightly proud of himself.” Muhammed received his award at a special West Midlands Police presentation ceremony on Tuesday 16th June.

REMEMBER: More than 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed in the Srebrenica Genocide by Bosnian Serb forces

20th Anniversary of Srebrenica Genocide A high-profile memorial service was held at Westminster Abbey earlier this week, to mark two decades on since one of the world’s most shocking genocides. On 11th July 1995, in what was supposed to have been a United Nations protected area, Bosnian Serb forces took control of Srebrenica where they rounded up and systematically murdered more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys. This week, events are taking place throughout the UK to commemorate 20 years on since the massacre. Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron led the tributes with his own Srebrenica Memorial Reception at 10 Downing Street on Monday 6th July, before the Westminster Abbey event welcomed up to 2,000 guests. Speaking of the event, Mr Cameron said: “We must never, ever

Prime Minister David Cameron leads in tributes to massacre victims forget what happened at Srebrenica. “The 20th anniversary is a moment to remember the many thousands who lost their lives, to remember their families and the missing, and the fact that for so many - including the Mothers of Srebrenica - the agony continues every day, undimmed by the passage of time. “We must reaffirm our determination to act to prevent genocide in the future.” Organised by UK charitable initiative, ‘Remembering Srebrenica’, the service was attended by genocide survivors and Srebrenica mothers who lost husbands, sons, fathers and brothers in the atrocity. Participants lit 20 candles dedicated to the memory of genocide victims and listened as Munira

Subaši , President of the Mothers of Srebrenica association, told her story. The United Nations has described the systematic murder of 8,372 Bosnian Muslim men and boys as ‘the worst crime on European soil since the Second World War’. Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency member Bakir Izetbegovi told the Abbey: “Genocide is one of the worst crimes known to humankind. “Srebrenica happened right here in civilised Europe – a brutal stain on the world’s conscience just 50 years after we said ‘Never again’ to the inhumanity of the Holocaust. “The best way to ensure that this never happens again is to use the lessons of history to build a cohesive and strong society. “We need to honour those who

were murdered at Srebrenica, whilst alerting the next generation to the danger of ignoring hatred and intolerance. “This is why I commend the work of Remembering Srebrenica in learning the lessons from our past and committing to help create a stronger, safer more cohesive society.” Srebrenica Memorial Week leads up to the official Memorial Day on 11th July and will include a range of some 100 regional events across the UK. From Bradford to Birmingham, Surrey to Stoke-on-Trent, organisers are holding memorial events, poetry readings, exhibitions and more. Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, will also be representing the

UK in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Srebrenica-Poto ari Memorial Complex on the official memorial day. Remembering Srebrenica Chairman Dr Waqar Azmi OBE added: “This year is the 20th anniversary of the genocide that occurred in Srebrenica - the single greatest atrocity committed on European soil since the Second World War and a brutal reminder of man's inhumanity to man. “Today’s memorial service is about honouring the victims and learning the lessons from the past to help illuminate the future by involving people of all faiths and non to help build a better, safer and cohesive society for all.”

Liar Liar! Children with good memories are better at telling lies

www.asianexpress.co.uk

Children who benefit from a good memory are much better at covering up lies, researchers from the University of Sheffield have discovered. Experts found a link between verbal memory and covering up lies following a study, which investigated the role of working memory in verbal deception amongst children. The study saw six to seven-year-old children presented with the opportunity to do something they were instructed not to –peek at the final answers on the back of a card during a trivia game. A hidden camera and correct answers to the question, which was based on the name of a fictitious cartoon character, enabled the researchers to identify who had peeked, despite denials. Further questioning, including about the colour of the answer on the cards, allowed researchers to identify who was a good liar, by lying to both entrapment questions; or a bad liar, by lying about one or none of the entrapment questions. During the experiment, researchers from the Universities of Sheffield and North Florida then measured two elements: verbal and visuo-spatial working memory in the children. Verbal working memory is the number of words a person can remember all at the same time. Visuo-spatial working memory is the number of images a person can remember all at the same time. Results showed that the good liars performed better in the verbal working memory test in both processing and recall, compared to the bad liars. The link between lying and verbal memory is thought to stem from the fact that covering lies involves keeping track of lots of verbal information. As a result, kids who possessed better memories and could keep track of lots of information were able to successfully make and maintain a cover story for their lie.

In contrast, there was no difference in visuo-spatial working scores between good and bad liars. The researchers suspect this is because lying usually doesn’t involve keeping track of images, so visuo-spatial information is less important. The results have been published this week in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology and are the first time it has been shown that verbal working memory in particular has strong links to lying, not just any working memory. Dr Elena Hoicka, from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Psychology, said: “While parents are usually not too proud when their kids lie, they can at least be pleased to discover that when their children are lying well, it means their

children are becoming better at thinking and have good memory skills. “We already know that adults lie in approximately a fifth of their social exchanges lasting 10 or more minutes, so it’s interesting to know why some children are able to tell more porkies than others. We’ll now be looking to move the research forward to discover more about how children first learn to lie.” Dr Tracy Alloway, project lead from the University of North Florida, said: “This research shows that thought processes, specifically verbal working memory, are important to complex social interactions like lying because the children needed to juggle multiple pieces of information while keeping the researcher’s perspective in mind.”

Google’s photo app labels a black couple as “gorillas” An image recognition algorithm used by Google, is putting photos of black people into a special album and labelling them as gorillas Google says it is ‘appalled’ and has apologised to a black couple after the firm's new Photos app mistakenly labelled them as ‘gorillas’. The automatic recognition software is intended to spot characteristics of photos and sort them together - so that all pictures of themselves, in a person’s library can be found in one place, for instance. But the tool seems to be identifying black people as animals. The app uses artificial intelligence to scan and identify subjects in images before labelling them. Software developer Jacky Alcine brought the issue to Google's attention on social media when he shared a photo of himself and a female friend, which was labelled ‘gorillas’ in the tags section of the app. Google executive Yonatan Zunger replied: "This is 100% not OK. (It was) high on my list of bugs you never want to see happen." Mr Zunger added that steps were being taken to avoid other incidents of mistaken tagging. "We're also working on longer-term fixes around both linguistics (words to be careful about in photos of people) and APOLOGY: Google has apologised for its Photos app which labels black people as gorillas

image recognition itself (eg: better recognition of dark-skinned faces). Lots of work being done, and lots still to be done. But we're very much on it." It is not the first time the Photos app, launched by Google earlier this year, has been criticised for getting labels on images wrong. In May, news website iTech Post reported that the app was tagging some images of dogs as horses. However, users are able to remove badly chosen tags manually, and the Photos app is able to note these change and improve accuracy over time and increased use - a type of technology known as machine learning. But Google acknowledged the severity of the incident, adding that ‘immediate action’ was being taken to prevent this type of m i s t a k e happening again.

Modi coming to the UK

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has confirmed he will finally visit the UK for the first time later this year since his landslide election victory. Modi is likely to meet with British Prime Minister David Cameron during his visit, expected to last around three days, whilst a possibility of him meeting Her Majesty The Queen is reportedly being worked out by UK and India's foreign office. The Indian leader is expected to arrive in London around 12th November before attending the G20 Leader’s Summit in Antalya, Turkey, later that week. The dates were finalised by India's foreign secretary, S Jaishankar after meeting with his British counterpart, Sir Simon Fraser. Modi was expected to visit the capital earlier this year for the unveiling of the

Mahatma Ghandi statue in Parliament Square yet he was unable to attend. A public appearance at Wembley Stadium has been mentioned previously, likely to imitate Modi’s Madison Square Garden event, held during his visit to the US. He addressed thousands at the iconic arena and is hoped to do a similar event here in the UK. The South Asian leader is currently on a tour of Asia and Russia with trade and energy topping his agenda during his five-day visit.

Driving business forward in the Black Country

14th BCABA Awards ‘Lean, capacity to innovate, and succession planning are the keys to business success’ - This was the cry from guest speaker Jindy Khera, at the Black Country Asian Business Awards held at the Wolverhampton Racecourse on Friday 19th June. The MD of the £200 million turnover company, KTC Edibles, based in Wednesbury explained how the family owned business had survived through three recessions by keeping their overheads lean and operating on a low cost basis. He also emphasised the importance of succession planning and giving key employees a stake in the company through share options. KTC Edibles has grown from a single retail outlet in Walsall to one which now has sites in Liverpool and Wednesbury employing over 300 personnel and evolving from manufacturing edible oil to drinks and snacks. The overall key to success, Mr Khera argued, was persistence, understanding your cost basis, and employing technology to maximise your return on capital. The 14th BCABAs celebrated businessmen and businesses which had been singled out for their outstanding contribution to their industry sector. Hosted by BBC presenter Tommy Sandhu, the night was full of entertainment with music provided by Amarun Johal. Money was also raised throughout

the night by the 500-plus guests in attendance with a total of £5,000 eventually donated to the Promise Dreams charity. The main award winners on the night were the family owned ‘Gill Group’ - a national company with offices in the Black Country and Birmingham. Operating in different sectors such as civil engineering, aggregates, aviation, builder’s merchants and insurance, the firm’s headquarters are a stone throw away from West Bromwich Albion FC and generate a turnover in excess of £50 million employing over 200 people. Its private jet operation carries celebrities, including premiership football teams such as Manchester City, Liverpool as well as her majesty the Queen. Mr Ninder Johal, who is stepping down as Chairman of BCABA and who is also the President of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce and a Black Country LEP Board member, spoke about the positive growth of the UK economy over the last five quarters and how businesses should look to maximise the opportunities available to them in an ever increasing global marketplace. He referred to the need for the Government to create an environment conducive for businesses to operate in, asking for a reduction in the regulatory environment and an increase in the incentives for businesses to invest in Research and Development.

Slimming challenge READY: Hasan Younis begins his slim down for Barnardo’s with help from TV celebrity Vicki Michelle

July 2015 - 1st Edition

Weighing in at 27st 6lbs east London man pledges to lose the excess pounds An east London man who has battled weight gain for decades has begun a monthlong slimming challenge for the children’s charity Barnardo’s – with a little support from ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get me out of here’ survivor Vicki Michelle. The ‘Allo ‘Allo star dropped in to witness Hasan Younis weigh in at 27st 6lbs, much of which he hopes to shed in the coming weeks. Hasan, 42, of Newbury Park in London, is raising cash for Barnardo’s by asking colleagues, family, friends, clients and members of the public to donate £1 for every 1lb he loses between now and 31st July. The father of four is observing Ramadan, in which Muslims fast from dawn till dusk, and hopes to lose as much weight as possible before the fasting month ends with the festival of Eid-al-Fitr on 18th July. His challenge will then continue until the end of the month. Hasan’s brother Kamran commented: “Hasan needs to do this for his kids so that he’s fit and healthy and can enjoy life with them. “For as long as I can remember he has been troubled by his weight, which has gone up and down like a yo-yo. You name a miracle diet, he’s done it.

“We all noticed that his weight needed tackling and our colleague Les had the idea of doing something for charity. It’s a great initiative and hopefully we can raise quite a bit of money for Barnardo’s. “If we can combine fasting for Ramadan with healthy eating and a bit of moderate exercise, at the end of the month we might see some significant loss, which will be spiritually and physically rewarding.” Hasan and Kamran have pledged to match however much is raised for Barnardo’s in sponsorship. Vicki, who endured three weeks of hunger and discomfort in the jungle during last year’s series of I’m a Celebrity…, was on hand with a few words of support for Hasan at the weigh-in. She said: “It’s fantastic that Hasan has taken on this challenge so he can make sure he is in good shape for his own children while also raising money for Barnardo’s. “The encouragement that he has had from his colleagues and his brother shows how important it is to have support from family and friends, whatever your age. “I’d encourage anyone who admires what Hasan is doing to sign up as a sponsor and help change the lives of the UK’s most vulnerable children and young people.”

One of the world's richest people Saudi Arabia's billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, has said that he will donate all of his wealth, in excess of $32 billion, to charity over the coming years. The money will go to the Saudi prince's organisation called ‘Alwaleed Philanthropies’ to work in the fields of ‘intercultural understanding’ and supporting communities in need, he said in a statement. The prince's two children were present at his boardroom when he made the announcement in Riyadh. Programs of Alwaleed will include promoting health, eradicating disease, bringing electricity to remote villages, building orphanages and schools,

as well as ‘empowering women’. The prince, chairman of investment firm Kingdom Holding Company, said he has already donated $3.5 billion to the charitable organisation. Alwaleed joins other billionaires who have made similar pledges in recent years, such as Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Michael Bloomberg. He credited the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their wide range of charitable projects and said his organisation has partnered with them on health initiatives. “Philanthropy is a personal responsibility, which I embarked upon more than three decades ago and is an intrinsic part of my Islamic faith,” he said in the statement, which came during the

holy month of Ramadan when Muslims are encouraged to give charity and help the needy. The prince, who does not hold an official government position, built his wealth through seed money from his father and smart investments. Kingdom Holding owns stakes in hotels like The Four Seasons, Fairmont and Raffles, as well as companies such as News Corp., Citigroup, Twitter and Apple. Though he did not give an exact timeframe, Alwaleed said his billions would be allocated through a ‘well-devised plan’ throughout the coming years. He said the donations would be based on a strategy supervised by a board of trustees, which he will head.

“Outright sexist attitude” OUTRAGED: Smita Sabharwal works in office of the Telangana chief minister and feels the magazine has been irresponsible with its comments about her

Indian bureaucrat sues Outlook magazine for labelling her as ‘eye candy’

An senior Indian bureaucrat is suing one of the country's leading news magazines after it described her as "eye candy". Outlook magazine also carried an illustration portraying 38-yearold Smita Sabharwal walking the ramp at a fashion show with her political bosses ogling her. Though the magazine didn’t name her, it questioned her exact job role saying: ‘She makes a fashion statement with her lovely saris and serves as “eye candy” at meetings.’ The magazine also posted that her portfolio "is a mystery" and what "she exactly does is a puzzle". Ms Sabharwal, who works in the office of the chief minister of southern Telangana state, has said the remark was "sexist" and "demoralising". She has stated the cartoon was

in reference to a recent fashion show she attended in Hyderabad. "What disturbs me the most is the suggestion that a woman is able to rise in her career because of her beauty. It is very demoralising for the thousands of women stepping out of their homes and making their career," Ms Sabharwal told BBC Hindi's Divya Arya. Describing the magazine's "outright sexist attitude" as "hurtful", she said she wanted Outlook to apologise. "In all my 14 years of working as a civil servant, I have never been discriminated [against] or made to feel any lesser because I am a woman or good-looking. It is only now, when I have become the first woman to be appointed to a chief minister's office that I am getting this.

"I have broken a glass ceiling, and clearly some people are not happy with it," she added. "My work is being undermined by some jealous elements and the lazy irresponsible attitude of the magazine. "I found that this magazine has ignored my professional track record and tries to insinuate total blatant lies and I cannot let them get away with this kind of rubbish journalism. At the same time, apart from hurting my professional pride, I also felt they insulted women in general across India, across the world and they have to be brought to book for this." The magazine has said they were yet to receive any legal notice from Ms Sabharwal.

Cleric who led mob and killed Christian couple arrested Pakistani police have arrested a Muslim cleric accused of leading a mob trying to kill a Christian couple for allegedly desecrating the Quran. Police rescued the Christians from the crowd near the eastern city of Lahore on Thursday 2nd July, a relatively unusual intervention in a country where those accused of blasphemy are sometimes

"But I have registered a case against the cleric and 400 others for inciting violence and endangering the lives of the couple." About 500 people in Sadar Farooqabad town attacked Owais Masih and his wife after a neighbour complained that they were sleeping on a plastic sheet with verses from the Quran written on it.

“And all because they were poor, illiterate people who didn't realise that a line from the Quran was written on a sheet they had purchased.”

MURDERED: The mob murdered Owais Masih and his wife after a neighbour complained that they were sleeping on a plastic sheet with verses from the Quran written on it

lynched on the spot. Police officer Sohail Zaffar Chattha said the cleric leading the mob demanded that police arrest the couple and charge them with blasphemy against Islam. "I told him I would not register a case because no blasphemy has been committed," Chattha said in a telephone interview.

Police rescued the couple as the mob began to beat them. The couple were later taken into protective custody and moved to an undisclosed location. "The mob meant business. They wanted to kill them right there," Chattha said. "And all because they were poor, illiterate people who

didn't realise that a line from the Quran was written on a sheet they had purchased." Blasphemy is punishable by death in Muslim-majority Pakistan. The charge is hard to fight because the law does not define clearly what is blasphemous. Even presenting the evidence in court can sometimes itself be considered a fresh infringement. Last year, a British man with a history of mental health illness was sentenced to death for blasphemy. The same year, a court upheld a death sentence for blasphemy for a Christian woman, Asia Bibi, in a case that drew

global headlines after the assassination of two prominent Pakistani politicians who took up her cause. Pakistan's minorities complain that the state fails to protect them from violence. Christians make up about four percent of Pakistan's population and tend to keep a low profile in a country where Sunni Muslim militants frequently bomb targets they see as heretical, including Christians, and Sufi and Shi'ite Muslims. Last year, a policeman hacked a man to death for allegedly making derogatory remarks about the companions of the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh).

Luton family ‘feel safer than ever’ after joining IS

MISSING: The Mannan family have not been seen since leaving the UK in May for a trip to Dhaka, Bangladesh

Statement confirms family of 12 joined extremists A missing family of 12 from London, who failed to return to their Luton home from a holiday to Bangladesh earlier this year, have joined Islamic State. A statement from the Mannan family, issued by extremists in Syria, was joined by images of Muhammed Abdul Mannan, the head of the family, smiling and pointing to the sky and his wife in a niqab. The Bangladeshi family had not been seen or heard from since 17th May when they left the UK for a holiday in Dhaka. The 500-word release, sent to the BBC last week, says the family feel ‘safer than

ever’ yet it could not be verified whether the statement was genuine. “We release this statement to confirm that indeed we are in the Islamic State,” the Mannan family said in the letter. “A land that is free from the corruption and oppression of man-made law and is governed by the Shariah, the perfect and just laws of Allah. “Yes, all 12 of us, and why should this number be shocking when there are thousands and thousands of Muslims from all corners of the world that are crossing over land and sea every day to come to the

Islamic State?” The words and photographs come after family sources indicated that they had received confirmation that all 12 had arrived in Syria. It emerged on Thursday that the family home was raided and one member was stopped from boarding a flight at Heathrow the day before they departed. The statement claims that Mannan, 75, and his wife, Minera Khatun, 53, led their young adult children and grandchildren to Syria. “Don't be shocked when we say that

none of us were forced against our will. In fact it is outrageous to think that an entire family could be kidnapped and made to migrate like this,” the statement added. They took with them their daughter, Rajia Khanom; their sons, Mohammed Zayd Hussain, 25, Mohammed Toufique Hussain, 19, Mohammed Abil Kashem Saker, 31, and his wife Sheida Khanam, 27. Mohammed Saleh Hussain, 26, and his wife, Roshanara Begum, 24, along with three children, aged between one and 11, are also listed as missing.

‘Political sabotage’ Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak has been accused of siphoning $700 million into personal bank accounts

Malaysia PM slams corruption report Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak slammed a report that said investigations into troubled state fund 1MDB have traced nearly $700 million of deposits into accounts that allegedly belonged to him, claiming it was a "continuation of political sabotage". The report published by the Wall Street Journal, if true, would be the first time the beleaguered prime minister has been directly linked to accusations of corruption surrounding the fund. There is no independent verification of this report. "There have been concerted efforts by certain individuals to undermine confidence in our economy, tarnish the government, and remove a democratically elected prime minister," Najib's office said in a statement on his Facebook page.

"These latest claims, attributed to unnamed investigators as a basis to attack the prime minister, are a continuation of this political sabotage," it said. The statement said documents cited in the report should not be accepted as genuine unless verified by appropriate authorities. It pointed to reports about criminal leaking of documents, doctoring and extortion related to 1MDB that has been recently published in the media. Early reactions from within Najib's party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), showed support for the 61year-old leader. "If they (the Wall Street Journal) were dead serious about the authenticity, the reports should have named the sources," Abdul Rahman Dahlan, the minister for Urban Well-being, Housing and Local Government, said

in a tweet. Two opposition parties called on Najib to take a leave of absence while the allegations are investigated, and another said he must declare his assets publicly in a sworn statement. However, commentators said Najib would likely hold firm. "The prime minister is in a very influential position within the party right now," said Wan Saiful Wan Jan of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) think tank in Kuala Lumpur. "If he says something, it's likely people will listen." Najib looked relaxed at a Ramadan fast-breaking dinner with other leaders and local officials in the southern city of Johor Bahru on Friday evening. Najib, the son of a former

primer minister, has been weakened by attacks from the opposition and from within his own party by charges of graft and mismanagement. However, he retains support within the long-ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. Najib, now in his second term, has also been under pressure over his management of the economy and a scandal arising from the high-profile killing of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu nine years ago. Two officers who were part of Najib's security detail at the time were found guilty of her murder.

Beauty Top Tips Healthy Skin in Ramadhan

During the holy month of Ramadhan, our routine, diet and food consumption change. But what you need to know is that this sudden change in your dietary habits, combined with the long period of daily fasting, can have a bad effect on your skin. A proper skincare regime is essential to avoid breakouts, dry patches, dull looking skin and all symptoms of the dehydration associated with fasting.

How can you take care of your skin during Ramadan?

• Clean, tone, exfoliate and moisturize your skin! The idea is to remove dead skin caused by the lack of water intake, restore the skin’s natural mineral levels and balance the skin’s oil production. • Fasting dehydrates the skin so it’s very important to make sure that you rehydrate after iftar.

• We recommend that between iftar and suhoor you drink at least eight glasses of water in addition to any other fluids.

Fact:The human body only absorbs 50 to 60 per cent of fruit juice, and just 20 to 30 percent of sodas.

• Eat healthy! There are many foods that can repair dehydrated skin, such as cashews or almonds which are packed with healthy fibers, fatty acids and proteins which will maintain your skin's glow.

• Fruits such as strawberries and blueberries are high in anti-oxidants, which are known for their positive effect on healthy skin. Dates are also a great source of anti-oxidants, vitamin A, iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium that all promote optimum skin health. Apricots aid in the digestion process. Make the best out of your fasting by including healthy nutrients in your iftar and suhoor!

VISIT: Harman Singh met with Asian Express Managing Director, Nadim Hanif, last week to discuss Punjabi Born Challe Foreign

As the Indian movie scene continues to grow in popularity every year, the UK is now preparing for its first taste of a new type of comedy as ‘Punjabi Born Challe Foreign’ debuts in British theatres. Developed by production house ‘Friday Film Factory’, the play will be staged in three British cities in conjunction with Rajpal Artist Productions UK. Guaranteed to bring a smile to lovers of Punjabi film and theatre, it is certainly a performance you do not want to miss. Harpal Singh is the founder of the Friday Film factory and will showcase his comical skills alongside some household names when the play is staged in Leeds, Birmingham and London. Irrfan Khan beats all previous box-office Khan records

Top of the

Khans!

There has always been a rage of the three Khans in Bollywood – Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir. From romancing heroines to doing action roles to breaking records with the 200 crore club, they have done it all. However, the entrant in the Khan club has left the audience flabbergasted. Irrfan Khan's Jurassic World has broken all records by giving a humongous opening of $511 million worldwide. This is the biggest opening ever to date. He plays the role of Simon Masrani, the owner of the dinosaur park in Jurassic World and it’s being speculated that Irrfan has had the maximum screen time any Bollywood actor has ever had in a mainstream Hollywood film. “The success of 'Jurrasic World' has come out as a blessing for all of us. I am

overjoyed with the response that the film has received in India and abroad. I thank everyone who has contributed to this film and made it such a large success,” Irrfan said in a statement. The story unfolds 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park in a fully functional resort on Isla Nublar that sees more than 20,000 visitors a day. The new park includes a biological preserve, a safari, a zoo, and a theme park type setting and of course unprecedented close access to real, living dinosaurs. Jurassic World, which also stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, is set at the same location as Jurassic Park. It is a direct sequel to the runaway 1993 hit. Irrfan’s impeccable performance in the film has been appreciated worldwide and now he’s prepping up for Dan Brown's ‘Inferno in Budapest’.

FILM: Tanu Weds Manu Returns OU T NOW DIRECTED BY: Aanand Rai GENRE: Comedy STAR CAST: Kangana Ranaut, Madhavan, Jimmy Shergill, Deepak Dobriyal

FILM: Dil Dhadakne Do OUT NOW DIRECTED BY: Zoya Akhtar GENRE: Drama STAR CAST: Ranveer Singh, Shefali Shah, Anil Kapoor, Farhan Akhtar, Priyanka Chopra, Rahul Bose

The sequel to the hit 2011 comedy brings the main actors and director back together for another slice of comedy gold. Four years after Manu met and wed Tanu in the hit original film (titled, unsurprisingly, Tanu Weds Manu), the lovable couple are back. Not only are the original stars back, with Kangana Ranaut as Tanuja 'Tanu' Trivedi and Madhavan as Manoj 'Manu' Sharma, but the original film's director, Aanand Rai, is back too. Although the pair are now settled in London, Manu is busy working hard and Tanu is bored. Horribly homesick, Tanu decides to fly back to India, but is closely followed by her beloved husband. The only problem is though, when Manu returns to India, it's Tanu's doppelganger - a Haryanvi athlete! - that he meets and falls in love with. Kangana Ranaut and R Madhavan are reprising their quirky-sweet roles in this romantic drama which, the actress says, will show the tricky grounds of a marriage. “I hear so many love stories every year but no one wants to go to the tricky grounds of a marriage. What we all see is happy ending and not what happens after marriage and what it takes to fall in love again,” says Kangana. “This film will convey that. It’s an urban, relatable issue and a beautiful love story. It can easily be a real life story.”

A dysfunctional Punjabi family embark on a cruise holiday around the Mediterranean in this new romantic drama by director Zoya Akhtar. Family differences are exposed on the high seas as businessman Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor) and wife Neelam (Shefali Shah) take their son Kabir (Ranveer Singh) and daughter Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) on a cruise holiday. After Kabir reveals his plans to become a pilot rather than taking over the family business, salvation comes in the form of Farah (Anushka Sharma), who has left home to pursue her dream of becoming a dancer. Also featuring in the all-star ensemble cast are Farhan Akhtar, who plays entrepreneur Ayesha's ex-lover, and Rahul Bose, who makes a special appearance as her estranged husband.

FILM: ABCD 2 OUT NOW DIRECTED BY: Remo D Souza GENRE: Drama STAR CAST: Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Allu Arjun, Prabhu Deva, Lauren Gottlieb, Raghav Juyal, Dharmesh Yelande, Remo D Souza ABCD 2 is a grand 3D Dance Film, which travels to the vibrant city of Las Vegas and is a bittersweet journey of love, friendship, betrayal, honour and redemption. The story traces the journey of an Indian dance troupe, a motley assortment of boys and girls who come from the backstreets of a Mumbai suburb; their rise to fame, sudden downfall and then their heroic attempt to seek vindication by regaining their lost glory and pride. The sequel to one of India's biggest dance movies of all time takes the troupe to the international stage. After the enormous success of India's first 3D dance film, ‘ABCD’ (Any Body Can Dance), Disney India and world-renowned choreographer turned director Remo D'Souza are promising bigger thrills and spills for the sequel. Reuniting the two lead stars (Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor) with their mentor Vishnu (Prabhu Deva), the story follows the Indian dance troupe to Las Vegas for an international dance competition. But with the stakes higher and much tougher competition, can the boys and girls from the Mumbai suburbs go back to India as champions? Will they be able to achieve success at the biggest International platform? Will they make their beloved Vishnu Sir proud, who is himself struggling with his not so perfect past?

Fusion of luxury Daredevil Bentley Continental GT Speed Breitling Jet Team Series with epic precision and speed Bentley is taking its fusion of luxury and performance to new extremes with the launch of the Continental GT Speed Breitling Jet Team Series. This exclusive series is limited to just seven cars, each inspired by one of the seven Breitling Jets. Renowned for their precision, speed and daring, this summer the Breitling Jet Team will be performing across the United States and Canada in a grand tour of epic proportions. To commemorate this spectacle, Bentley's Mulliner division has reimagined the Continental GT Speed to mirror the distinctive look of the

Breitling Jets, fusing extreme customisation with immense speed. The exterior is painted in a striking duo-tone split of Hallmark and Onyx with highlights colour matched to the exact Pantone of Breitling's unique Yellow, reflecting the trademark look of the L-39 Albatros Jets. This bespoke colour theme is continued on the interior, with unique sculpted seats featuring accents in Breitling Yellow. Taking customisation to new heights, each car is individually numbered and corresponds to one of the seven Breitling Jets. The dashboard's carbon fibre fascia panel displays an image of the seven planes in their signature Avenger flight formation, with the corresponding jet highlighted in Breitling Yellow.

Fusion of luxury Daredevil Bentley Continental GT Speed Breitling Jet Team Series with epic precision and speed Continued from page 89 Similarly, Mulliner has matched the hide and thread to Breitling's signature yellow and designed a series of logos and graphics for the headrests that highlight the number of each car and the jet that inspired it. The tread plate plaques are also individually numbered. The series will debut at the Boeing Seafair Airshow on 31st July, 2015 in Seattle, where the Breitling Jet Team is performing. The key for each car will be

handed over to its owner by the corresponding plane's pilot, but not until they have experienced a flight in the jet that inspired their car. Geoff Dowding, Director of Mulliner, said: "The Continental GT Speed Breitling Jet Team Series demonstrates the level of customisation Mulliner can achieve for customers. Creating this very special edition has been an exciting experience for the entire team, taking inspiration from the Breitling Jet Team's grand tour."

A bigger number of drivers in the UK remember their first motoring love than their first kiss. It’s been revealed 77 per cent of drivers fondly know what their first car was compared to 75 per cent who can still recall who it was they kissed for the first time. A combination of these two loves also means 35 per cent of drivers own up to having their first kiss in the car they started their driving career. One in 10 drivers also say their first car was the scene of their earliest romantic date. An even greater number (93 per cent) still know what colour their

First car more memorable than first kiss

original set of wheels was, whereas only 88 per cent accurately remember the name of their original boyfriend or girlfriend. As a nation, Brits are so attached to our first cars that one in 10 drivers say they are still at the wheel of the first car they owned after passing their test. The pride taken in drivers’ first cars is also demonstrated by the nicknames given to their cars, which include Glitterbug, the Flying Egg and Viva Los Viva. However, four out of 10 drivers are

not so nostalgic and say their first car was a banger and 6 per cent admit the thought their initial set of wheel was an embarrassment. More than half (55 per cent) of drivers today say they bought their first car themselves using their own savings, with nearly three in 10 (29 per cent) saying their parents bought their first car for them. This is in contrast to previous decades, where 68 per cent of new drivers in the 1970s paid for their first car themselves, with just 19% turning to the ‘bank of mum and dad’.

‘I hate the show’ – Top Gear has finally marked the end of an era with footage of Jeremy Clarkson saying he "hates" working on the show. The 75-minutes of footage for the finale was filmed before Clarkson was fired from the show. Aired as two separate films, in the second instalment, while stuck in a muddy river Clarkson is heard lamenting: "I hate working on Top Gear." Bombshell beauty! Ford GT: The 600-plushorsepower hypercar unveiled After the recent astonishing highperformance and supercar launches that included the Chevrolet Corvette Z06, Chevy Camaro Z/28, Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Ford’s own Shelby Mustang GT350, our jaws were dropped. Now Ford’s unveiling of the all-new GT, an ultra-high-performance supercar that has a host of stats, has our jaws opening wider by the second. The GT packs more than 600 horsepower with an EcoBoost engine, and is combined with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. It’s one of more than 12 new Ford Performance vehicles coming by 2020 and it utilises full carbon-fiber construction and body panels, it has active aerodynamics and a plethora of technology. It joins Focus RS, F-150 Raptor, Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT350R in the growing Ford Performance lineup. Beginning production in late 2016, the Ford GT hits the road in select global markets to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ford GT race cars placing 1-2-3 at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. The all-new GT supercar features rearwheel drive, a 3.5 litre mid-mounted engine,

and a sleek, aerodynamic, two-door coupe body shell. It is propelled by the most powerful EcoBoost production engine ever - a next-generation twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 producing more than 600 horsepower. The bombshell beauty makes extensive use of lightweight materials, including carbon fiber and aluminum - enabling outstanding acceleration and handling with improved efficiency. Ford's commitment to and capability in delivering technologies typically offered only in elite vehicles is evident in the GT. These include advanced active aerodynamics, such as a deployable rear spoiler, and a host of material and technology innovations to help better serve the driver, such as SYNC 3 - the latest version of Ford's advanced connectivity system. Few innovations provide a more wide-

ranging performance and efficiency advantage than reducing weight. All factors of a vehicle's capabilities - acceleration, handling, braking, safety, efficiency - can improve through the use of advanced, lighter materials. The all-new Ford GT features advanced lightweight composites, which will help serve Ford's entire product lineup moving forward. With the broad application of structural carbon fiber elements, the GT will exhibit one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any production car. Anchored by a carbon fiber passenger cell, the GT features aluminum front and rear subframes encapsulated in structural carbon fiber body panels. Carbon fiber is one of the world's strongest materials for its mass enabling an ultra-stiff foundation for chassis components, while creating a lighter overall package for increased dynamic performance

and efficiency. EcoBoost engines power a growing number of Ford performance models, including the new Mustang, just-announced F-150 Raptor, as well as Fiesta ST and Focus ST. Based on the same race-proven engine architecture serving Ford's IMSA Daytona Prototype endurance racing efforts, the nextgeneration twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 in the GT features a wide powerband with impressive time-to-torque characteristics. The engine demonstrates remarkable efficiency - a key attribute of its endurance racing-derived powertrain, where exceptional performance combined with efficiency is a critical competitive advantage. The twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 will be paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle for near-instantaneous gear changes and exceptional driver control. While it shares a legacy with classic Ford racing and performance cars, GT is a fully contemporary and functional shape that communicates modernity and pure beauty. "The GT is the ultimate execution of an enthusiast supercar," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. "GT includes innovations and technologies that can be applied broadly across Ford's future product portfolio - another proof point that Ford continues raising the performance bar while ultimately improving vehicles for all of our customers." The dramatic supercar will be delivered to the first customers at the end of 2016 and is expected to be priced at around £250,000.

A car manufacturer is testing high-tech systems used by a space agency to monitor a car driver's stress, fatigue and concentration levels. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) wants to see if a car can effectively read the brainwaves that indicate if a driver is beginning to daydream or feeling sleepy. JLR is also developing a seat in a Jaguar XJ, which analyses the driver's heart rate and breathing to indicate their health and stress levels. On the brainwave reading, JLR said it was investigating a method already used by American space agency NASA to develop a pilot's

July 2015 - 1st Edition

concentration skills and also by the US bobsleigh team to enhance concentration and focus. This detects brainwaves through the hands via sensors embedded in the steering wheel. JLR is currently conducting user trials to collect more information on the different brainwaves identified through the steering wheel sensors and will involve leading neuroscientists in the project to verify the results. The seat sensor, for monitoring a driver's well-being, was originally developed for use in hospitals and has been adapted for in-car use and detects vibrations from the driver's heartbeat and breathing.

Monitoring the physical health of the driver could not only detect the onset of sudden and serious illness that may incapacitate the driver, but also allow the car to monitor driver stress levels. This would then allow the car to help reduce stress, for example by changing mood lighting, audio settings and climate control. In addition, the company is working on technology which will provide touchscreens that predict which in-car entertainment button drivers want to press even as their fingers are in mid-air - thus minimising the time spent with eyes off the road.

Space-age tech Tesla Model S does one billion electric miles

Tesla, manufacturer of the award-winning Model S all-electric saloon, announced its total vehicle fleet worldwide have driven over a billion miles. In just the three years since Model S hit the road, owners across the world have travelled the equivalent of over 4,000 trips to the moon, or almost 40,000 times around the Earth. By driving electric miles, Tesla owners have saved more than half a million tons of CO2. A billion miles on a fleet of just under 75,000 Model S is a testament to the safety and durability of Model S and the ease of charging and driving electric vehicles. Tesla customers rely on Model S as their daily driver and for long distance road trips by charging at home or along Tesla’s worldwide Supercharger network. Since the launch of Model S in 2012, Tesla has created a charging network spanning North America, Europe and Asia that now consists of 445 Supercharger stations and thousands of Destination Charging locations, enabling fast and free long distance charging. Most importantly, Model S owners can be confident that they are driving the safest car on the road thanks to Tesla’s Autopilot capabilities, a low centre of gravity and a maximum possible 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Tesla will kick off this fleet milestone with the launch of the ‘Next Billion Miles Tour’, which will travel around North America, Europe and Asia offering customers the opportunity to experience the exhilarating performance and handling of Model S. The Next Billion Miles Tour will visit a number of locations in the UK. To sign up for a test drive on the tour, visit http://www.teslamotors.com/ en_GB/billionmiles

Ducati India also presents the Hypermotard and Hyperstrada, all models of the Diavel family and the 899, 1299, 1299 S and Panigale R. During the conference, Mr. Pierfrancesco Scalzo (Asia General Manager of Ducati) spoke about the brand’s history, its Italian heritage and current range, while Mr. Ravi Avalur (Ducati India Pvt. Ltd Managing Director) presented plans for India’s network, confirmed the opening of a new dealership in UB City, Bangalore in October 2015 and unveiled the the two new Scrambler variants. Remarking on Ducati’s official entry to India, Pierfrancesco

Scalzo said: “In 2013 we began our groundwork in India and our belief in the market has been reaffirmed. This has been possible with great partners such as AMP, Infinity and VST. I have travelled extensively across the length and breadth of India, met Ducatisti, felt their passion and know that we will be successful in this country. Ducati will provide the same high standards of service in India as we do everywhere else in the world. “We introduced the Scrambler Icon in June and were overwhelmed with the positive response from our customers,” said Ravi Avalur. "Now, we’re proud to unveil the Scrambler Classic and Full Throttle and are confident that motorcyclists will

love these versatile machines also. Of the two new Scrambler variants introduced, the Classic is aimed at those who appreciate attention to detail and 1970s style, but who don’t want to compromise on riding pleasure and functionality. The Full Throttle version, inspired by the flat track world, is destined for those who want a motorcycle perfect for every-day use and with a distinctive racing style.” Mr. Pierfrancesco Scalzo concluded the event announcing new openings in the rest of the country, including Pune and Hyderabad and he remarked that the main target for Ducati is to provide unlimited satisfaction to the customers in India.

Rising Stars rising up league On a day where huge scores were registered across the three Quad-eAzam divisions, it was the Section A Group 1 league that stole the show with some incredible performances with the bat. Eight out of the ten teams picked up scores of more than 190, with Rising Stars (323-9) cementing their spot as favourites for promotion with a thumping victory over Zulfi AK (198-8). Amazingly, despite breaching the 300 mark, the league leaders didn’t pick up a bonus point as they failed to bowl out their opponents. Bashim Ishaq (85) and Mohammed Raffaz (57*) set the pace for the day with their individual scores, whilst a half century was also picked up by Zulfi’s Mubashar Khan (86). The only other unbeaten record in the division, before the weekend, has now fallen as Bradford Royals (213) suffered a narrow loss at the hands of Friends (213-7). The Royals slip six points off the summit now as the Stars continue their rise in the division. Elsewhere, Chach (225-5) registered their third win of the year as Azhar Ali’s century (110) helped his side secure a convincing 158 run win over Eastern Friends (67), whilst Bradford Moor (2048) scraped a three run win over Central Leeds (201-7). The last of the division’s action was

Batsman of the week:

Unbeatables eye promotion in Group’s 1 and 2 Shaheen (195) who secured their second maximum point win this time over Karmand (176). The shock of the weekend came in Section A Group 2 in the match between lowly Patriots (195-6) who beat second place Tabs (58). After electing to bat first it was Wakar Ahmed (101) who led from the front, registering a huge score before M Syed dismantled the Tabs batsmen, taking four wickets for just nine runs. Group 2 leaders, Kashmir Bradford (295-5), made the most of Tabs’ dropped points to extend their lead at the top to 10 points, defeating a spirited Kings XI (211). Kashmir are looking increasingly likely to earn the promotion spot to the Premier Division, with a game in hand over their nearest challengers. Another team who broke the 200 mark in the weekend was Azad (215), cruising to a 150 run victory against bottom side Earlsmarshall. Indus Ghari (142) missed out on the chance to take second spot as they lost at home to Bradford Phoenix (144-7) by three wickets. Ahmed starred with the ball for the visitors, taking four wickets

for 21 runs, as the victors earned just their second win this year. There was also a comfortable win in the division for Al-Minarah (176-3) as they made light work of My Lahore (174). Rounding off the Quaid-e-Azam leagues this week is the Premier Division, where there were once again expected wins for leaders Keighley RZM (120-1) and OnQ (158-7) against Flix (116) and White Rose (157) respectively. Away from the two runaway leaders and just 11 points separates third to bottom in the tight division. A standout performance from Shimla’s (219) Zahif Khaliq (6-20), guided his side to just their second win in nine games, overcoming Kashmir Dewsbury (155), whilst Bhalot (124-4) are up to third after defeating Darulshafa (123). Just 89 runs were scored in the match up at Heaton Park (44) who were dismantled by career best figures from Wasim javed (7-28) who led Raja (45-1) to their easiest win to date.

CHALLENGING: Nazim Ali will aim to complete the Leeds 10k next weekend despite fasting throughout the day

THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL MAN IN BOXING –

TIMOTHY BRADLEY By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk

In my time of watching boxing I have been privileged enough to watch some fantastic competitive boxing bouts and more importantly some of the world’s best skilled boxing gladiators who will do anything it takes to get a win in the ring. I have also witnessed the suspicious and absolutely weird boxing events like a man parachuting into a boxing ring during a boxing bout, boxer biting his opponent’s ear off and referee’s stopping a fight prematurely even though the boxer was not hurt during the bout and was on route to get a win on the scorecards. This past weekend I watched Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley (32-1-1) take on an undefeated fighter called Jessie Vargas (26-1). Bradley won the bout against Vargas via unanimous decision at the StubHub Center in Carson, Califonia but the end of the fight was probably one of the strangest events I have ever seen. Bradley himself is probably one the toughest fighter in boxing right now, but more to the point he has also been involved in some of the most bizarre happenings during a boxing bout on a regular basis. Bradley had controlled the boxing bout with his controlled aggression, accurate point scoring punching and his determination to succeed like always. Bradley was well ahead on the score cards and the bout had reached the 12th round of the fight. Vargas not willing to give up trying to win until the final round was wounded but still determined and then out of nowhere managed to land a powerful counter right hand that landed flush on Bradley’s chin, that managed to daze Bradley as he covered up and leaned on the ring ropes for survival. Lucky for Bradley the 10 second end of the round warning sounded and the referee thinking it was the

end of the round waved to stop the fighters fighting, but the fighters and the entire viewing crowd thought Vargas had been given a technical knockout victory. The fight ended with 4 seconds still left in the bout and Vargas was denied the chance of possibly obtaining a knockout victory against Bradley and he was also told that the referee had mistakenly stopped the boxing bout early. It was understandable to see Vargas furious with the referee and asked for an immediate rematch with Bradley. Bradley in my view has never been in a boring fight and always fights with his heart, like a true warrior who gives it his all, but unfortunately he always gets involved in boxing controversies and lacks public respect he deserves through no real fault of his own. In 2012 Bradley fought Manny Pacquiao and won a controversial decision when he should have clearly lost that fight. In 2013 Bradley fought Ruslan Provodnikov and ended up winning the fight but physically beaten up with a severe concussion that needed hospital treatment. More recently Bradley fought Diego Chaves and the fight was again controversially scored a draw when Bradley had clearly won nearly every round of that fight. Bradley has hinted that his next fight will be a rematch against Vargas due to the nature of Bradley getting the win and Vargas screaming out that the last ten seconds cost him the fight. However other great options for Bradley as the next possible opponent could be Keith Thurman, rematch with Diego Chaves, England’s Kell Brook or Amir Khan, Shawn Porter after his impressive win against Broner and “the best himself” Floyd Mayweather who is still looking for a September 2015 opponent. I just hope things get calmer for the “Desert Storm” Bradley whoever his next opponent maybe and I look forward to his next fight.

Leeds runner targets a FAST finish No food or water won’t stop Ramadan fundraiser

For many people, the idea of running 10km is enough of a challenge in itself, so combine it with a 19-hour fast and it becomes an almost implausible concept. However, one determined fundraiser from Bradford is preparing to do just that later this month as he takes on the Leeds 10K challenge whilst observing the Islamic month of Ramadan. Nazim Ali will have no food or water from around 3am until 9.15pm on Sunday 12th July, during which time he will have completed the annual city run in the midst of the British summer. Raising funds for the SKT Welfare Charity, it is the second year in a row that the 34-year-old has taken part in the challenge and understands the risk involved. “Sounds crazy doesn't it?” Nazim said. “I know the challenge will be both physically and mentally draining as I will have no

access to water yet my struggle is nothing in comparison to the plight of the Syrian refugees who I am raising funds for. “During last year’s run, three people collapsed because of the sheer heat and needed medical attention. I realise my training and diet has to be absolutely spot on.” In preparation for the event, Nazim has been completing 10-kilometre runs in the evenings, closer to the time of which he breaks fast. This has allowed him to eat and drink upon the completion of each run. Next weekend however, Nazim will have no such luxury as he will have to wait at least 10 hours before he can have any food or water following the Leeds race. Nazim, who recently returned from the Turkish border where he delivered aid to Syrian refugees, has seen first-hand how families have been affected by war overseas and explained what he hoped to achieve through his

fundraising. “Hundreds of thousands of Syrian children have become orphaned because of the five year conflict in their country which shows no sign of ending,” he said. “They have lost their parents to the conflict - many have witnessed horrific crimes a child should never witness

such as their parents being killed in front of them.” He continued: “During this Ramadan I am aiming to raise enough funds to support 10 orphans for one year in SKT Welfare Charity’s flagship ‘Springs of Hope Family Centre’ in the Turkish/Syrian border town of Reyhanli. “This is due to open in August 2015 and is a 75 room purpose built accommodation for 75 widows and over 215 Syrian children. “I personally saw progress on this unique place during my recent trip there in June and I have now made it my mission to try and help them.” If you would like to sponsor Nazim, please visit www.justgiving.com/nazim118

Ashes call up for Rashid Yorkshire spinner in squad for Australia showdown “It is definitely a career highlight. It’s always a dream to play Test cricket for any youngster, especially to be part of an Ashes squad. I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully I can do well.” Rashid, who was part of Yorkshire’s innings victory, missed out on a pre-Ashes camp to Spain, but he believes helping Yorkshire progress to the top of the LV= County Championship table was more important. “I was just told by Paul Farbrace to come here to Durham and get some overs under my belt and if selected for the squad, I’d be ready,” he added. “It was good to get some overs under my belt, get into rhythm and bowl my tricks. I’ve never met Trevor Bayliss (England head coach), and I’m looking forward to meeting him and seeing how we get on.” Rashid is a firm believer that

up the Bradford-born bowler for an alternative option on dry wickets. “There has been some good weather around and it looks like being a dry summer,” he said. “If we have Rashid there we have the option to play him.” Rashid and the rest of the England party met up last weekend.

India’s incredible squad depth will be put to the test next month as Ajinkya Rahane leads a second-string side to Zimbabwe for three one-day contests and two Twenty20 Internationals. The Mumbai batsman has been selected to head the team amidst the resting of a number of senior internationals, including usual captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Ravichandran Ashwin have also been left out of the squad following the national side’s recent 2-1 ODI series defeat in Bangladesh. Amongst the names included in the lineup is off-spinner, Harbhajan Singh, who last played for India in June 2011 after making over 200 one day appearances for the national side. Chief selector, Sandeep Patil, insisted that the squad was picked with one eye on next year’s Twenty20 World Cup in India, urging the 15-man team to take advantage of their opportunity in front of them. He added: “We are confident of Ajinkya's ability [to lead the team] and want him to do well. “We're very happy the way his career is shaping up. He is one of the most consistent batsmen we have.” 27-year-old Rahane has played 55 ODIs since debuting in the 50-over format in 2011, hitting over 1,500 runs and top scoring with 111 off 108 balls against Sri Lanka in 2014. Patil continued: “That's why we want to see his other aspects. We have given him this opportunity and we'll definitely back him.” Although no specialist glovesmen have been included in the squad, batsmen Robin Uthappa, Kedar Jadhav and Ambati Rayudu, are all able to keep wickets. Meanwhile, Manish Pandey and Sandeep Sharma are the only uncapped players in the ODI side. The ODIs kick off at the Harare Sports Club on 10th July, followed up on the 12th and 14th, whilst the Twenty20 Internationals will be held at the same venue on the 17th and 19th June.

Ashes call up for Rashid Yorkshire spinner in squad for Australia tests

SPIN: Adil Rashid has been included in his first Ashes squad ahead of this summer’s highly anticipated contest

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Yorkshire’s Adil Rashid will be swapping the white rose of Yorkshire for the three lions of England this month after receiving his first Ashes call up ahead of the opening test. The 27-year-old will walk out at the SSE SWALEC stadium in

Cardiff on Wednesday 8th July, as he joins the national side in what will be his first Ashes experience. The leg-spinner has never competed in the historic contest before and says he first learnt of his call up as he left the field following Yorkshire’s emphatic victory over Durham. “I found out as soon as I got off the field,” he said. “Dizzy

(Jason Gillespie) was the first one who told me. “He said ‘well done on your selection’. I checked my phone and had a message from Mr Whitaker. I’m delighted, over the moon, and am looking forward to going there and seeing what happens.
