Report on the work completed in the period August – October 2013 In keeping with Ashwini Charitable Trust’s (ACT) mission of empowering the children and the teachers of government schools so that they can be at par with the private schools, ACT decided to apply for the adoption of the Government Tamil Higher Primary School in Murphy town in July 2013. The Murphy Town School was chosen by the Trust for the following reasons:    

Daily attendance is 70 students , although 118 students are currently enrolled in the school Nearly 50 children from this area are already sponsored by ACT 12 children from the Murphy Town School were attending classes in the Indira Nagar Satellite Centre of the Trust post school hours The school falls in the ambit of ACT’s area of operation

Once the relevant papers were submitted, after doing the due diligence the BEO’s office granted ACT the permission for the adoption on 26/07/2013.

The next step…

Volunteering …. Volunteers started the remedial classes right from 29/07/2013, and members of the Trust were visiting the school regularly in order to interact with the Principal, the teachers and the children to gauge the tasks that would have to be undertaken immediately.

Celebrating Teacher’s Day Teacher’s Day was celebrated on 06/09/2013. As part of the celebrations, children were divided into 6 groups; each group had a volunteer as mentor. They were given worksheets in English and Maths as part of the ‘Play Way’ method of learning, subsequent to which the children played some interesting games. The children dispersed after they were given snack boxes and tetra pack juice.

Supplementing the existing Infrastructure

The next step…

On 08/08/2013, ACT submitted, to the BEO, a detailed list of the tasks that would be undertaken as part of the adoption programme. In the adoption agreement ACT had undertaken the ‘renewal’ and ‘repair’ of the existing school premises (PL ref to letter No: ACT-GTHPS-MT/2013/001). In order to ensure the safety of the school children, repair work was started during the Dusherra holidays. Before commencing the repair work, ACT photographed the premises for maintaining records. These photographs are given below:

The Kudappah stones in the courtyard had broken and many children were tripping on them regularly

The walls in all the class rooms in the Administrative building were infested with termites.

There were deep holes in the walls behind all the cupboards because termites had eaten through the walls and built colonies.

Many benches and desks were broken and dumped in the classroom that the Ashwini Charitable Trust had requested to use as the Resource and Supplies Room. This class room is in the main Administrative Block of the school.

The Roof tiles of the Resource and Supplies Room were broken and the recent rains had caused further damage to the roof and the room.

How Ashwini Charitable Trust conducted the repairs and renewal project Step 1: Cleaning the school rooms with the help of volunteers: 50 volunteers cleaned the external walls of the class rooms, applied wall putty and painted the walls

The total cost for painting and termite treatment borne by ACT was Rs 39,749

We also painted the external front wall of the Administrative Block and refreshed the tri color on the external pillars

The Garden Before

The next step‌

The Green area on the left of the Administrative Block was full of wild grass and a lot of rubbish

How Ashwini Charitable improved the Garden 60 volunteers along with trained gardeners from Association of People with Disability spent 5 days cleaning up the surface measuring 55X50ft. The grass had grown very deep roots and uprooting them was very time consuming.

96 Hibiscus saplings, green chillies, tomatoes, brinjal and basil plants were planted. The hibiscus plants will form a natural border for the garden area once they are fully grown

The Garden After Two sides are along the compound wall, the other 2 sides were fenced with metal pipes at 4ft. distance and chicken mesh was tied around the pipes. The chicken mesh was painted to prevent rusting.

The Total costs for fencing ,plants, manure and hired gardeners was Rs 14,130
