welcome A guide to Park Radio….your truly local station

Welcome to the fifth edition of “On the Air” as we now look forward to not only celebrating our fourth Birthday, but also the exciting news that Ofcom has extended our licence to 2027. We are all so pleased to have re-opened our studios since they were mothballed in March 2020, and look forward to welcoming you once again – as many of the team now are back at the DYCC. We cannot pretend that the last 20+ months have been easy, but Park Radio is fighting fit and ready to get on with the job - with a busy programme of projects to deliver across our communities. Our aim is to establish satellite studios in both Harleston and Eye which will help promote ownership and community cohesion, plus providing a great training facility for each town too! Park Radio has achieved so much and the recent Outside Broadcast [OB] was a real game changer which both the team and listeners enjoyed very much. We also promoted three of the team to the Board of Directors, which will help the station develop and grow. Our monthly road trips to a different village have also been well received – Parky Bear always brings a smile! Park Radio is now a well established and trusted part of the local broadcasting landscape with its team of 50 volunteers both on and off air – this is also down to all our supporters, advertisers, local councils, Ofcom and YOU! I’m now in my 11th year with the project and personally love what I do and feel it’s a real privilege to be able to do this job – thanks for sharing your time with us all. We hope you continue to enjoy what we do and will help us by completing the short questionnaire inside which will automatically enter you into a prize draw to win a meal for two at Oaksmere. Good Luck! If you have any comments about Park Radio please email me direct – chris@parkradio.co.uk Keep listening!

Message from Station Mana

ger…

"Park Radio means an awful lot to me and, with the team of 50 or so volunteers, the station is in good shape to face the ma ny challenges. Remember we have the com munity behind us as we hav e shown how focused we have been in pro viding a vital service across Dis s, Harleston and Eye - we have well and truly earned our place on the dia l and in peoples’ affections. It's a wo nderful legacy that has ma de a diff erence to many people lives both insi de the organisation and bey ond. Having jumped through ma ny hoops to have successfu lly been given a further five year license to 2027, which was a real challen ge, it makes what we do at Park Radio even mo re important to the team and our listeners. I’m very proud of what has been achieved by a very tale nte d team of people during the last 11 yea rs. Park Radio is something special and should be cherished by the commu nities it's licensed to serve." Chris Moyse

Visit to Fressingfield WI “On September 14th Chris Moyse visited Fressingfield Women's Institute to talk to us about Park Radio. It was interesting listening to him and the lovely lady with him (sorry didn't catch the name). I tuned into your station later in the week and in a short space of time heard Leo Sayer, The Beatles, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, ABBA and T Rex. It was so refreshing to hear a different, varied, playlist, with music being the focus, rather than the presenters. You're now a Pre-Set Station on my radio, my husband who readily becomes bored listening to other stations is a fan. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you and make a request. The request is for all of the Volunteers at Park Radio. Anything from the 70's, whatever time is best for your team.” Many Thanks, Jacqui Thone

Charity Fundraising Since our full-time launch in 2017, we’ve thrown ourselves into fundraising for our nominated charities each year. During 2021, although limited by Covid-19, the Park Radio team staged a 10 mile sponsored cycle ride to Gissing and back. It was great fun and raised over £1,000 for our four local and national nominated charities - Solo Housing, Waveney Foodbank, Alzheimers Society & Parkinsons’ UK. Thank you for your sponsorship. We are also planning a coffee morning at the DYCC very soon too!

Nominated Charities 2021 Solo Housing Solo Housing has been working locally with single people to find housing solutions since 1985. We help a range of people, from those who simply need a roof over their head, to those who need regular help to overcome problems that they may be experiencing. At Solo we believe in people and our intention is to provide opportunities for those who pass through our door to improve their lives. We are funded by a number of different agencies, as well as by voluntary donation, to provide support, advice, information and practical help to achieve this. Waveney Foodbank We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.

Alzheimer’s Society Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity. We campaign for change, fund research to find a cure and support people living with dementia today. Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer. Someone develops it every three minutes and there’s currently no cure. Parkinson’s UK We’re close to major breakthroughs. Funding the right research into the most promising treatments, we get closer to a cure every day. Until then, we're here for everyone affected by Parkinson’s. Fighting for fair treatment and better services. Making everyone see its real impact. People with Parkinson’s, scientists and supporters, fundraisers and families, carers and clinicians, all working side by side. Impatient for change, we’re taking a stand, speaking out, chipping in, and playing our part

“I am delighted to report that the Open Day and Membership Drive we held recently at the Diss & District Bowls Club was extremely successful. A large number of people visited the Club with a significant number of those becoming new members. The results far exceeded our expectations and completely endorsed us using Park Radio as an advertising medium. It has become clear from our subsequent analysis that we were able to get our message across to many of those areas we ordinarily wouldn’t have been able to reach. The regular broadcast of the advertisement throughout the month of August ensured that we maintained a significant exposure to

much of our target audience at varied times of the day. It has certainly improved our name and awareness and continues to raise the profile of the club within the local community. It was a most worthwhile exercise and, in our opinion, has represented excellent value for money. These results give us the confidence to continue to work with Park Radio in the future and to provide the Club with the best means of exploiting the facilities it has to offer the local community. Thank you again for ensuring that the process was very straightforward and for the successful contribution Park Radio has made to our campaign.” Howard Witton, Finance Director, Diss & District Bowls Club Ltd.

The Ofcom Community Radio Fund Ofcom recognised the enormous cash pressures the community radio sector were under, particularly during the pandemic, so wanted to help the vital work that Park Radio and other stations were undertaking. The Ofcom Community Radio Fund is designed to help stations, like Park Radio, to remain sustainable but also to help it to grow its business and above all assist the station’s development and its short to medium terms projects. We believe that having a dedicated resource to maximise local revenue by offering cost effective advertising packages is vital to help us provide the service.
