Welcome to a New Year of diverse entertainment at The Quay! At the time of going to press, everything booked for January to April 2023 has been put into these pages, but remember it is ALWAYS worth keeping an eye on our social media and checking in on our website quaysudbury.com to see any additional shows/screenings that are added during the season. You can also join our email database to be the first to get Quay News as it happens! Just get in contact and we’ll add you.

There are likely to be changes to the way we ticket events coming soon but it’s nothing for anyone to be concerned about – it will be a mixture of technology (scanning) and physical tickets where requested. We are also working on digital gift tokens and online credit redemption, so keep an eye out for news on that!

Midwinter Revels GreenMatthews

Spanning several centuries, GreenMatthews’ Midwinter Revels is a celebration of Yuletide Past guaranteed to warm the cockles of the most Scrooge-like heart!

Free & Company are one of the UK's finest 'Free' and 'Bad Company' tribute acts. Four highly accomplished musicians, with a love for the classic rock sound of the late 60's and early 70's, replicate the sights and sounds of two of the UK's iconic and much loved rock acts.

The show features classic hits including ‘All Right Now’, ‘Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love’, ‘My Brother Jake’, ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love’, Wishing Well’ and many more.

Complete Stone Roses

16 strings, 8 dancing feet and 4 voices with 1 aim: to make classical music wickedly funny and exhilarating. Graffiti Classics burst the elitist boundaries of the traditional string quartet. It's a classical concert, a gypsy-folk romp, an opera, a stand-up comedy set and a brilliant dance show all rolled into one! From Beethoven to Bluegrass, Baroque to Pop, Mozart or Offenbach to Elvis, Strauss to Saturday Night Fever, there really is something for everyone.

The Complete Stone Roses are one of the UK’s most successful tribute bands. The Stone Roses played a pivotal role in the history of the UK’s indie music scene. Famous hits like Fools Gold, I Am The Resurrection and I Wanna Be Adored are as recognisable now as they were in the heyday of Madchester and the Hacienda.

As life in Britain’s cities becomes perilous, three evacuee children are sent from Salford to the Yorkshire village of Oakworth. Meeting them at the station are Bobbie Waterbury (Jenny Agutter, reprising her iconic role), her daughter, Annie (Sheridan Smith), and grandson Thomas (Austin Haynes). When the children discover injured American soldier Abe (KJ Aikens) hiding out, they are thrust into a dangerous quest to assist their new friend who, like them, is a long way from home. Don’t Go Into the Cellar Productions

From the files of Scotland Yard come these startling stage adaptations of infamous truelife nineteenth century crimes. Faithful to the source material but employing a theatrical flourish, expect to be entertained and horrified in equal measure. Includes the Thames Torso Murders!

Essex County Band

Catch them in the UK before it’s too late! Comprised of British brothers Nate, Mark and Kieran Bass, Essex County is one of country music’s most artful and nuanced groups. The band’s sound is rich with tight, family harmonies, studded by multi-octave vocal ranges and broadened by sweeping country and rock influences in songs that swing from soulful and heartfelt to holler-and-swaller. Now living in Nashville, they are making a name for themselves with their incredible songwriting and performances.

In the West End of 1950s London, plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after the film’s Hollywood director is murdered. When world-weary Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and eager rookie Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) take on the case, the two find themselves thrown into a puzzling whodunit within the glamorously sordid theatre underground. A modern Mexican classic of magic realism provides the basis for The Royal Ballet’s new fulllength work, reuniting Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon with the creative team who transformed Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Winter’s Tale into dance, composer Joby Talbot and designer Bob Crowley. The ballet is inspired by Laura Esquivel’s novel – a captivating family saga where the central character’s emotions spill out through cooking to influence everyone around her in startling and dramatic ways. Running time: 3 hours and 10 minutes (including one interval)

Women in Rock

Since 2016, Women In Rock have been wowing audiences across the UK & Europe with their high energy performances. Before becoming a playwright, panelist, performer, and Edinburgh Festival favourite, Arthur Smith worked as a road sweeper, dustman, market researcher, teacher, and advertised chicken burgers in supermarkets dressed as a fox. A career in comedy was the only one that could follow a build up like that! He’s appeared on top quiz shows, fronted the funny section on Loose Ends and is a regular Grumpy Old Man and Countdown wordsmith.

Singer Chloe is a stunning Debbie Harry lookalike with outstanding vocals. She has toured throughout Europe, has many TV credits and has performed with Katrina (And The Waves), Craig David, John Legend, Beverley Knight, Ronan Keating, Chris De Burgh, and The Feeling. The rest of the talented band have played with well-known artists including Nik Kershaw, D-Ream, Penguin Party,  the BBC - keyboard player Chris has even supported Blondie on tour!

Steve Logan Plays Neil Young (with band Geronimo)

Steve and his band, Geronimo, have become well-known for their interpretations of Neil Young. The show at The Quay will consist of two sets, one acoustic, one electric, and will feature many classic and much-loved songs by Neil Young including: ‘Heart of Gold’, ‘Old Man’, ‘Out on the Weekend’, ’Cinnamon Girl’, ‘Ohio’, ‘Cortez’ and ‘Rocking in the Free World’.

The Woman King (15)

This is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, it follows the epic journey of General Nanisca (Oscar®-winner Viola Davis) as she trains the next generation of recruits to fight against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life.

Luke Wright: ‘The Remains of Logan Dankworth’ and more

Logan Dankworth, columnist and Twitter warrior, grew up romanticising the political turmoil of the 1980s. Now, as the EU Referendum looms he is determined to be in the political fray. Meanwhile, Logan’s wife Megan wants to leave London to raise their daughter. The third of Luke Wright’s trilogy of political verse plays looks at trust, fatherhood and family in the age of Brexit. The second half will see Luke perform some favourites.

Rock Choir Show

Eddy the Teddy: Eddy’s Birthday

Rock Choir sing their own arrangements of Pop, Motown and chart songs - fabulous, uplifting and inclusive fun! This is a fundraising event on behalf of The Quay Theatre. Led by choirmaster, Adam, the singers are pooled from Sudbury, Braintree, Bury St Edmunds, Chelmsford, Witham, Great Dunmow and Colchester! Come along, join in the rousing fun and sing along at whatever volume you wish!

Suitable for children aged 6 and under It's Eddy the Teddy's birthday. He’d love a surprise so his best friend Sammy Ragdoll decides to throw a party. To make it a bigger surprise, she pretends to forget his birthday. The plan backfires as Eddy is sad. How can Sammy get things back on track?

Combining theatre, mime, puppetry and songs, it's a perfect introduction to live entertainment for children.

CLUBS & SOCIETIES

Book Club

The Quay Book Club meets in the bar on the first Tuesday of every month and is an informal and sociable small group. It is free and all are welcome. Meeting times are 7.30pm - 9.30pm. Keep an eye on the website for dates and book details.

Chess Club

Sudbury Chess Club meet in the Quay Bar on Wednesdays from 7.30pm.  A small and friendly club who welcome players of all ages and abilities, for social and competitive chess.

The Quay Play Readers

The Quay Playreaders meet in the Geoff Kisby Room at the top of the building on the third Wednesday of each month from 7.30pm.  It is free to attend but a small charge may be made to cover scripts. It is particularly good for those who have an interest in theatrical readings but perhaps are not looking to perform on stage.  A very friendly bunch! The Quay Bar is open for refreshments throughout.

Youth Theatre Groups

Quay Comets & Quay Novas are our affordable term-time theatre clubs for young people which emphasise socialisation and performance skills in a fun and friendly environment.

Each group will perform a showcase at the end of the term.

Still Got the Blues: The Gary Moore Story

Get ready for a supercharged set of rock and blues from the UK’s only touring Gary Moore tribute show. This brand-new show covers all the eras of this British icon’s musical career from the early days with Thin Lizzy, through the 80s with melodic rock and on to the 90's blues era.

This professional 4-piece band is made up of guitar, bass, drums and keys and has played a collective 9000 shows all over the world. Each musician is a leader in their own field but the magic that happens when they are all together must be heard to be believed.

Two short plays, related with Bennett’s characteristic gentle humour, in which he finds something remarkable and profound in the apparently ordinary happenings of life.  Say Something Happened - presented by arrangement with Samuel French Ltd.  A home visit by an earnest social worker seeking to help an elderly couple who are independent spirits.

Cocktail Sticks – presented by arrangement with United Agents. An autobiographical account of the author’s early life, particularly his relationships with Mam and Dad. This is an amateur production in association with Concord Theatricals for Samuel French Ltd.

Here, in candid conversation with comedy historian Robert Ross, TV comedy star Jeffrey Holland shares memories of working on Dad’s Army, Russ Abbot’s Madhouse, Are You Being Served?, It Ain’t Half Hot Mum, Hi-de-Hi! and Oh, Doctor Beeching!; as well as reflecting on his comedy influences including Arthur Askey, Peter Sellers and Stan Laurel. Robert may recount tales of meeting such comedy greats as Frankie Howerd, Bob Monkhouse, and Norman Wisdom.

Puccini’s score is rich in musical marvels (featuring the famous aria ‘Nessun dorma’), while Andrei Serban’s production draws on Chinese theatrical traditions to evoke a colourful fantasy tableau of ancient Peking. Running time: 3 hours and 20 minutes (including two intervals)

The Phonics: Stereophonics Tribute

The Blackheart Orchestra

Blackheart Orchestra is officially the smallest orchestra in the world. Two people playing 13 instruments between them. Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Pilkington perform in a ‘musical space station’ of instruments including guitar, bass, percussion, mandola, piano, organ, omnichord and their collection of vintage synthesisers. After over 1000 concerts and 3 albums they’ve played everywhere from Southampton to Sydney including London’s Palladium and Royal Albert Hall.

Trespass

Trespass, formed in 1979 in Sudbury by Mark Sutcliffe on guitar and vocals and his brother Paul on Drums, enjoyed success and critical acclaim as part of the New wave of British Heavy Metal.

Still fronted by founding member Mark and now joined by talented local musicians Joe Fawcett (guitar), Jason Roberts (drums) and Wil Wilmot (bass), Trespass have a brand new album out in early 2023. The lads will be playing a set of songs from across the decades and right up to the latest release. They have played the Quay many times over the years and used to rehearse in the Quay building in its very early years as a theatre!

Miss Pettigrew, a dowdy governess down on her luck, is sent for a job to the wrong address and encounters the glamorous nightclub singer Miss Delysia LaFosse  -  and over the course of a day becomes more involved and enamoured by the life of Miss LaFosse and her set – and blossoms!

Quay Productions and Pelham Elliott Productions are thrilled that The Quay Theatre will see the premiere of the first stage adaptation of the much-loved modern classic, a fun and light-hearted story set in the Thirties. This adaptation is approved by the literary estate of the author, Winifred Watson. This is an amateur production and a fundraiser for The Quay.

When a priceless painting goes missing at Lord and Lady Raeburn’s auction, Detective Stuart Pidcock is called to uncover the mystery. When he cannot solve it, he is forced to enlist the help of an old nemesis. The pair must interrogate the many characterful suspects that reside at the manor, in order to catch the conniving culprit. A slapstick farce inspired by the Carry Ons, Only Fools and Horses, Tommy Cooper, Naked Gun, Dads Army, Airplane, Morecambe and Wise and Two Ronnies.

An Audience with Henry Blofeld

Widely respected as the voice of Test Match Special ‘Blowers’, Henry Blofeld brings his wit and wisdom to the stage. It’s not all about cricket though, instead focusing on Henry’s life story, although there’s time for as many after-dinner anecdotes and digressions as there is in a Test Match Special rain break. Henry pokes fun at himself with subjects veering from intergalactic travel to horticulture to mountaineering. Audiences are always sure of an evening of great tales from this quintessential Englishman.

Following a pilot test reading at The Quay in 2022, Tim Marriott is pleased to present the UK premiere of the full production of Jack’s Ashes in association with The Quay Theatre. Former professional cricketer Jack gives his team talk, but wickets fall like a ticking time bomb and the anecdotes from the ashes of his career prove less than inspirational. As he pads up to be the last man in to go out and save the day, ‘Jack's Ashes’ offers a humorous insight into the mental frailties that can cloud the mind and the distractions that can lead to ruin.  Developed in consultation with professional sports bodies and mental health charities, ‘Jack's Ashes’ is designed to reduce stigma and promote conversation about mental fitness.

The Quay Bar hosts a variety of events, some of which are currently not quite back up and running after the pandemic.

Open Music Night

Our monthly open performance on the last Sunday of every month. Bring your instruments or just your voice - acoustics only, readings allowed, no mics please! Starts at 7pm.

We have many more events in the pipeline, including our popular quiz, music nights and special food and drink events. Keep an eye on the website and our social media to find out when these are up and running again.

Films

The Quay Plant Market will be held from 10am on Sudbury’s Market Hill on Bank Holiday Monday 1st May, with up to 20 businesses selling a huge variety of shrubs and plants from local nurseries and those further afield.
