A The development of the DT Swiss Aero wheels marks the beginning of a new era in the road segment for DT Swiss. These wheels were developed in partnership with industry-leading aerodynamics experts from Swiss Side to deliver a benchmark product. Outstanding aerodynamic know-how combined with unmatched wheel-building technology secure not only the fastest, but truly the best performing aero wheelsets money can buy.

A NEW DEFINITION OF DRAG Aerodynamics is probably the number one issue when it comes to road cycling developments at the moment. How can aerodynamic drag be reduced and what does it really mean to reduce drag? What is the actual enhancement for the rider out there on the road? How can wheels influence the aerodynamics of the rider and their bike? Those are the questions we frequently ask ourselves during the ongoing aero development process with our partner Swiss Side. When it comes to the optimisation of wheelsets, there is still a lot of potential, contrary to popular opinion. While everybody is speaking about the optimisation of the rim shape, we had a look at all the components of the wheelset and their influence on aerodynamic performance. The result is a completely new definition of drag!

TRANSLATIONAL DRAG

ROTATIONAL DRAG

is what we are traditionally talking about when referring to “drag” and what is measured in wind tunnels...until now. Translational drag is the aerodynamic force in the biking direction slowing the rider down. To minimise this translational drag, the complete bike and rider should be as streamlined as possible. As drag power increases polynomially with speed, the aerodynamic drag from 15km/h is the biggest resistance the rider has to overcome. No news for the moment, as this is basic aero knowledge and almost everybody has been testing in the wind tunnel for reducing drag. But this is only half the truth. There is another very important component of drag...

Riding at any given speed the whole bike and rider are moving forward at this speed. As a matter of fact, the wheels are moving at this speed too but they are also rotating whilst doing so. They are subjected to the translational drag and something more called “rotational drag”. Rotational drag can be described as the additional friction that occurs between the wheel as it passes through its surrounding medium - the air. Whilst the rider and the other parts of the bike face the translational drag only, the wheels are facing both components - translational and rotational drag. In wind tunnel testing and in all wind tunnel published data, the rotational drag is not considered, because the wheels are driven by rollers. So the power required to rotate the wheels is not calculated in the total ‘real world’ drag. Therefore considering translational drag as well as rotational drag is key when it comes to the aerooptimisation of wheels. 5

MEASURE ROTATIONAL DRAG To actually measure the influence of rotational drag on a wheelset, our engineering crew developed a completely new mobile test rig, which has been integrated into the wind tunnel fixture. Bearing friction is excluded from the measurements by relocating the bearings from the hub into the testing rig. The measuring wheel gets driven manually up to a speed of over 60 km/h. Through a light barrier the decline in speed of the wheel is measured. The rotational energy can then be calculated through the decline of speed and the inertia moment of the wheels, to the highest possible measurement precision.

THE RESULTS

1. Rotational drag makes up 25% of the complete wheel drag.

2. Deeper wheels create less rotational drag.

3. Tyre width has a small influence on the rotational drag.

4. Internal nipples create less rotational drag than external nipples.


WIND TUNNEL TESTING In the final development step, all wheels are tested in the wind tunnel to prove the results of the CFD and black box simulation process. Building upon the great knowledge of the Swiss Side aero experts, all testing is done at the GST wind tunnel in Immenstaad, Germany. To demonstrate the relative wheel performance front wheel only tests have been chosen, instead of fully equipped bikes and bike plus rider tests. The reason for this is that the relative performance offsets measured between different wheels are independent of the testing method.

At the centre of the wheel a hubshell has to withstand all the loads coming in through the spokes from accelerating, braking, cornering and road obstacles. All this while transmitting the rider’s energy coming through the freewheel. By employing advanced FEA computer analysis, DT Swiss is able to produce light yet reliable parts, Swiss precision machining and the best alloys available ensure you are out there with the best possible components!

With their 18mm inner rim width, Performance wheels are aero optimised to deliver the least drag and a controlled handling when used with 23-25mm wide tyres. This is the right size tyre for a lightweight, yet very aero setup.

OXiC TECHNOLOGY

OXiC is a process in which a ceramic coating is electromechanically applied to the rim surface, making it extremely hard and wear resistant. The OXiC process achieves a high end looking, matte black finish which also guarantees the highest level of brake performance while reducing wear on the rim to the absolute minimum. OXiC - THE PROCESS

OXiC - THE ADVANTAGES

The ceramic layer is achieved similarly to anodising, by submerging the rim in an electrolyte solution while applying an electrical tension between the rims as one electrode and the container as the other. The decisive difference between anodising and OXiC lies in the millions of plasma discharges that occur between the electrolyte and the rim, applying high temperature and pressure on the developing oxide layer. Due to that, the developing oxide layer melts, flows and solidifies again. During this process the amorphous (not aligned) structure of the oxide converts to a crystalline (aligned) one. This is why OXiC is so hard and wear resistant.

• Extremely good and consistent brake performance in all conditions. • The OXiC rim surface is so hard, that the rim will not be affected by wear over the normal lifespan of a wheel. The only part that wears out is the brake pad. • Since the ceramic layer is applied through a conversion coating process, the OXiC coating is able to deform with the rim, maintaining its superior properties even under high mechanical loads (conventional ceramic coatings tend to crack when exposed to mechanical stress). • The OXiC coating process uses no volatile organic compounds or heavy metals, making it a very environmentally friendly technology. • Black rims that stay black: Since the OXiC does not contain any inks or dyes it is totally UV stable and won’t fade or discolour in the sun.

The transition area of the rim is shaped in a way that allows the airflow to stay attached to the tyre and the rim, despite the 19mm inner rim width. The point of stall is shifted into the direction of the rim bend, which has a positive influence on the slipstream and minimises drag. The profile curvature prevents an early stall and aligns the slipstream to profit from a sailing effect.

EFFICIENCY Comfort, grip and rolling resistance define efficiency. Wheels have a direct and important effect on how the tyres perform regarding comfort, grip and rolling resistance. During the development of the ERC 1100 DICUT® we have paid close attention to these factors as they play an integral role in the Aero+ concept, because you can only stay aero when you stay in control. A wider contact area and lower pressure of the tyre result in more grip and more comfort. The wider rim supports those wider tyres better. Therefore it allows for more aggressive cornering before the tyre starts to fold or to run lower pressures respectively.

At the same pressure 28mm tyres have lower rolling resistance than 25mm tyres. The same tyre rolls better the higher the pressure (measured on an 18mm internal width rim with Continental GP4000S.

The hooks are thick enough to withstand pinch flats, the rim bed is shaped for tubeless tyres to easily pop into place and the bead seats are designed so the setup stays airtight at all times.

Riding rattly gravel roads for countless miles or body-checking other cyclocross riders is hard on the material. DT Swiss products are known to be amongst the most reliable and durable out there. But a clean and regrease of the freewheel or a check of the spoke tension every now and then is very welcome nonetheless. The engagement angle is the degree to which a hub spins freely before transferring the rider’s power to the wheel. The smaller the angle, the faster the leg power reaches the ground, so a smaller engagement angle is generally better. It is important to know though, that there are limits on the minimum possible angle, as the reliability of the freewheel system partially depends on the angle, too. What makes the Ratchet System hubs truly unique, is the fact that all teeth of the two ratchets engage simultaneously every time. Pawl hubs in comparison engage only a couple pawls

simultaneously. Furthermore, in the case of pawl hubs, the contact surface is rather small, whereas in the case of the Ratchet System, the whole front face engages, creating much smaller point loads. The result is the legendary reliability of the Ratchet System hubs and distinctive sound as the star ratchets rotate against each other!

RIM & TYRE Our XC rim profiles are optimised for today’s lightweight and wide race tyres. • Wider tyres have a bigger H1 value, allowing for less pressure with the same amount of pinch flat resistance since it takes a much bigger impact to run through the tyre’s travel, the H1 value. • Wider rims make for a lower W1 to W2 ratio, therefore they support the tyre better, allowing for lower pressure OR more aggressive riding. • Wider tyres have a much bigger and wider contact patch P1, providing more grip and comfort, allowing for longer, more aggressive riding.

Just wide enough, just light enough. At 30 mm internal rim width, the M 1700 SPLINE 30 works for tyres ranging from slightly wide to quite wide, allowing it to attack the hardest of terrains. But with a high-end build, butted spokes, patented alloy Pro Lock nipples and the benchmark Ratchet System hubs, it still comes in at a low weight. Low weight means it’s very reactive to rider input. PRECISION MEETS METICULOUS DEVELOPMENT PROCESSES Each component of the pawl hubs has gone through a demanding development process and is constantly optimised. Two examples are the low-friction V-seal and the high-quality, easy-to-replace ball bearings, which are pressed into the hubshells with thousandth-of-a-millimeter precision. Similarly, the two-piece steel and aluminium freewheel body stands for the perfect combination of weight and strength. As a single component it represents all the know how that makes the reputation of the term Swiss engineering. SINC CERAMIC TECHNOLOGY WHEELS

SINC ceramic ball bearings have been developed by DT Swiss as a system. They are based on balls made from silicon nitride (Si3N4), an extremely tough and wear- and corrosion-resistant ceramic material. The bearing rings are made from a specially developed steel alloy, which is adapted to the properties of the specific ceramic material used and are precision ground. This combination reduces the rolling resistance to an absolute minimum and guarantees greater durability than conventional ball bearings. But it is not just the bearing itself that is conceived as a system. It’s only by using tolerances within a few thousandths of a millimeter and precisely tuning the tolerances of DT Swiss hub bearing seats that SINC ceramic bearings deliver their full potential and offer the decisive advantage over competing products.

Even when installed, the optimum distance between the ceramic balls and the bearing ring (clearance) is ensured. This guarantees minimum rolling resistance and prevents bearing wear.

The production of high quality spokes marked the beginning of the company. DT was the synonym for top quality Swiss spokes even before the establishment of today’s DT Swiss AG. To this day, DT Swiss spokes and nipples stand for durability and precision and are unrivalled thanks to their unique production process. They combine light weight with stability. Product development at DT Swiss focuses on new trends,

technical innovation and very high quality standards. The spoke and nipple range is fine-tuned in line with the different requirements of the various cycling disciplines. The portfolio is complemented by the numerous versions of lengths, diameters, and colour variants, so nothing stands in the way of building the perfect wheel.

SPOKE MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY 1.

STRAIGHTENING PROCESS

COLD FORGING

The first step is the same for all types of spokes. Wire from large reels is fed through a machine where it is straightened and cut to length. A very precise straightening process is mainly important for the smooth operation of the following processing steps. Only the highest quality 18/10 stainless steel is used.

This process, which was developed and patented by DT Swiss, is used to double-butt the diameter of the spokes. Oscillating hammers rotate around the wire. This process densifies the material while ensuring that it retains its good ductility. The result is a spoke with a slim butted section for light weight and a strong height and thread for durability.

SHAPING OF HEAD AND THREAD

FLAT FORGING

Head and thread are made during this step. First, the spoke is cut to the exactly calculated size, the head is formed and the known DT symbol is embossed on the spoke head. Classic spokes are subsequently elbowed in a 90 – 95º angle, which gives them their typical J-shape. The other end of the spoke is rolled to a thread. Rolling provides additional material strength at the thread.

The source material is straight gauge or cold-forged spokes, which are bladed during this process with a weight of up to 250 tons. This flat shape of the spoke provides particularly aerodynamic advantages. If the spoke was initially cold-forged, then this additional forging process densifies the material even more, which in turn achieves a greater strength at a lower weight.

BLACKENING AND PAINTING

QUALITY CONTROL

Approximately 50 % of the produced spokes leave the factory in their original silver colour. All other spokes are coloured. There are two different processes for this purpose. For the highly popular blackening process, the spoke is treated with a weight neutral, chemical coat. The second process is painting, where the spoke can be painted in every desired colour.

Quality control starts with the inspection of incoming certified raw material and continues throughout the whole production process. Material analyses are performed and the material is checked for dimensional accuracy, geometry and optics through permanent random sampling. DT ALPINE III®

In terms of weight, DT Revolution® is the lightest round spoke in the DT Swiss spoke range! The diameter of the middle section is reduced to 1.5mm during the cold forging process. This slim centre piece saves 161g in weight compared to spokes with a constant diameter. Its use is very versatile due to the ideal ratio between stability and low weight. DT Revolution® is a reliable partner for anyone looking for a light wheel in a classic design.

DT Apline III® is the spoke with the lowest weight in relation to its stability. This is accomplished through a complex production process. Starting with a spoke of 2.34mm, the diameter is reduced at the thread to 2mm and to 1.8mm in the middle section during the cold forging process. This allow weight savings of 173g compared to spokes with a constant diameter. Despite the light centre piece, DT Alpine III® is very durable and is perfectly suited for the big loads occurring in high performance e-bike or tandem wheels.

DT AEROLITE®

In the first step, the middle section of this spoke is butted through cold forging. This makes it lighter and stronger. Next it is bladed to optimise the aerodynamic characteristics while increasing material strength. DT Aero Comp® guarantees a balanced ratio of stiffness, aerodynamics and durability. This spoke fits hubs with standard spoke holes. The straight pull version is aligned perfectly to straight pull hubs, ad offers increased durability. Another benefit of this spoke is its excellent price-performance ratio.

DT Aerolite® is the lightest flat spoke in the DT Swiss spoke range with excellent aerodynamic characteristics and a very high stability. The centre piece is first reduced and butted to a light 1.5mm during the cold forging process and then bladed. This process again increases the strength of the material and generates the flat shape. This spoke fits hubs with standard spoke holes. The straight pull version of the top spoke is aligned perfectly to straight pull hubs, and offers increased durability.

Pro Lock® is a process where a patented, dual compound, adhesive liquid is injected into the nipple thread, allowing for extremely durable wheel builds. By threading the nipple onto the spoke, the glue is activated and starts to harden. With Pro Lock® retruing of the wheel is always possible with minimal decrease of its threadlock function.
