WHEELS - ROAD

AERO

The new ARC design is the culmination of an extensive product development process. It defines the new performance of aerodynamic wheels for faster aero road, time trial and triathlon bikes.

5

REFRESHING THE SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND OF THE AERO+ CONCEPT To balance the partly conflicting requirements of speed and handling, the AERO+ concept achieves ultimate riding performance by means of an optimum ratio. AERO+ is the symbiosis of drag, handling and efficiency. It therefore considers the following scientific parameters.

Translational and rotational drag, Rolling resistance and Steering moment. These parameters have been optimised in pursuit of a single goal: faster speeds.

TRANSLATIONAL DRAG Translational drag is the aerodynamic force in the riding direction that slows the cyclist down. It consists of the frontal area of the cyclist (75 %), the road bike and its components (25 %), and speed. To minimise this translational drag, the surface of the overall system needs to be minimized while streamlining the entire road bike and cyclist as far as possible. If you want to be faster, the key is to reduce the aerodynamic drag of the complete system of road bike and cyclist as the force increases exponentially. From 15 km/h upwards, aerodynamic drag is the greatest resistance a cyclist has to overcome. As the front wheel contributes 8% of total dra g, the wheel’s behavior plays a significant role. SAILING EFFECT In crosswind conditions, the cyclist and road bike are exposed to lateral forces that affect riding behavior. When developing wheels for road bikes, the aim is to minimise these lateral forces and maximise the sailing effect – combined with best rideability. The sailing effect of the wheels can be compared to a sailboat whose sail catches the wind and propels the boat. When cycling, the rim has the same effect and can push the whole system forward. Thus, in moderate crosswind conditions with an inflow of between 0°-20° yaw, the cyclist is no longer slowed down by translational drag but benefits from drag reduction with increasing yaw angle. Depending on the rim height and shape, this drag reduction can reach negative watt values which even create forward propulsion. Excellent sailing effects with crosswind occur with yaw angles up to 18°. Beyond that, stall occurs that causes drag to increase again.

6

ROTATIONAL DRAG In addition to moving at a certain speed facing translational drag, the rotating parts of the bike such as the wheels are also affected by rotational drag. Rotational drag can be described as the additional friction that occurs between the wheel as it passes through the surrounding air with rotating components. Rotational drag accounts for up to 25 % of total drag compared with 75 % for translational drag. Since the spokes are the link to the rim and hub, they take on significant importance that must not be underestimated in the fight against the wind. Important to know: the lower the rim height, the less the influence of the sailing effect. Therefore, longer spokes in low rim profiles lead to higher rotational drag. [1] Rotational Drag

[2] Rotation of wheel

STEERING MOMENT Lateral forces come into contact with the wheel and can influence rideability. Handling therefore needs to be safe and predictable, regardless of external weather conditions such as strong and changing crosswind and headwind. To achieve controlled speed, the AERO+ rim is further refined in this respect with lower steering moment. The cyclist benefits from more predictable, and thus controlled, steering behavior, resulting in longer periods in the aerodynamically optimal position and higher speeds. WHY IS STEERING MOMENT SO IMPORTANT? The cyclist feels lateral forces during a bike ride caused by gusty crosswinds and passing vehicles of different sizes and speed. These can have a strong impact on the wheel and are unpredictable and dangerous for the cyclist. The larger the angle of the airflow (yaw angle) and the stronger the wind force, the more the cyclist must constantly adapt to the required counterforce to ride straight in the desired direction. 7

REENGINEERED AERO+ CONCEPT

8

For the new ARC wheels, AERO+ has been reoptimised for speed, handling, and overall efficiency.

AERO+ guarantees – in our eyes – the fastest riding performance in the development process of the new wheels.

Speed sparks the adrenaline we all love and crave. It is the desired characteristic that is central to aero road cycling. But what is the point of speed without controlled handling?

To achieve overall efficiency, the new ARC wheels are reengineered in every single component so that energy can be fully converted into performance.

Control - an attribute that is all too often underestimated and a prerequisite for riding fast. For this reason, controlled handling was already considered in the AERO+ concept in the development of the ERC wheel. Control means a recognisable and predictable correlation between one’s own behavior and the consequences of that behavior.

Predictability, reliability and controllability of the road bike independent of the situation make cyclists faster.

REDESIGNED RIM SHAPE The greater clearance allowed by the disc brake system opens up new horizons for the development of the rim shape. The rim shape of the new second generation ARC wheels combines two established rim shapes in the road bike industry – V and U:

The rim inner width of the new ARC wheels is increased up to 20 mm to allow a wider tyre to be mounted for less rolling resistance and greater comfort without sacrificing aerodynamic advantages.

• The V-shape converges to a pointy end of the rim and dates back to the very first ever rim shape on the market.

The redesigned shape of the rim body results in the forward pushing sailing effect combined with more predictable handling in gusty conditions. As the wheel is the only component with the ability to generate propulsion, the entire system of road bike and cyclist benefits from the AERO+ rim shape.

• This was later replaced by the U-shape, with a more bulbous rim body and a rounded end of the rim. • The fusion in the VU-shape results in a pointy end of the rim and a more voluminous rim body. (1) In general the first ever rim shape on the market: V-shape (2) ARC 1st generation: U-shape (3) ARC 2nd generation: VU-shape

All AERO+ optimised rims have hooked beds and are tubeless ready to ensure safe use and the broadest choice of different tyres.

9

REINVENTED SPOKES The new shapes of the DT Aerolite II and DT Aero Comp II have a significantly positive influence on rotational drag. The reduction of rotational drag up to 1.1 watt through the new aero shape in combination with the aerodynamic alignment through the T-heads contribute to an increased overall speed. The material of the two new spokes has been more compressed during the flat forging process for increased tensile strength. (1) DT AEROLITE II: light spokes, for excellent aerodynamics and high tensile strength. The dimension of the new aero shape is 35% wider and 23% thinner compared to DT aerolite. (2) DT AERO COMP II: stable spokes, developed for high lateral stiffness and maximum traction. Featuring a more aerodynamic cross-section area compared to the DT aero comp. EXCLUSIVE: these new spokes are built in the ARC 1100 DICUT wheels only.

REMASTERED HUB Central to any wheel construction is the hub. With the introduction of the 180 & 240 Ratchet EXP hub platforms, we have made something simply ingenious even more ingenious. Based on two essential patents, the hubs are built with Ratchet EXP technology and the “two in one spoke hole” at the hub. The patented Ratchet EXP hubs set a new standard with unique features in high-performance hub technology: •E ASY MAINTENANCE of the hub and simple conversion to different free hub body systems. Thanks to their notches, endcaps can be easily disassembled for a hub service. •L ESS WEIGHT refers to the reduced number of components as a result of the fusion of ratchet and threaded ring. •S UPERIOR RELIABILITY due to the firm connection between the inner ratchet ring and the hub body as well as the 36T ensuring a precise engagement. • LONGER SERVICE LIFETIME due to the greater distance between the bearings (resulting from the fusion of ratchet and thread ring). The hub is 15 % stiffer, leading to less wear due to reduced movement.

REPORT OF DRAG | COMPETITOR ANALYSIS

1

2

3

The results from the wind tunnel endorse the redevelopment of the new ARC wheels with better aerodynamic performance. Compared to competitors, drag in both frontal and lateral airflow is lower at all rim heights. Indicated by a *, all aero drag power figures quoted at 45 km/h reference speed. (1) The ARC 1100 DICUT 50, with around 13.8* watts, clearly has the lowest drag in headwind conditions (yaw = 0°; base drag) compared to its competitors. The ARC 1100 DICUT 50 demonstrates an excellent sailing effect, delivering a weighted aero drag performance of 10.5* watts; the best aerodynamic performance of all tested wheels with a similar rim height.

(2) The ARC 1100 DICUT 62 demonstrates the lowest drag values at any yaw angle compared to its competitors. In headwind, and also over the entire crosswind angle range, there is a difference of up to 2 watts in aero drag performance. Compared to wheels with a similar profile height from other manufacturers, the ARC 1100 DICUT 62 achieves with 8.9* watts weighted aero drag an extremely low value (lower = better). This is the only wheelset with negative drag, providing thrust at around 14° yaw. (3) The ARC 1100 DICUT 80 wheel delivers the best sailing effect among the ARC wheels. While competitors reduce drag with crosswind (up to yaw = 16°), they do not reach the negative drag range. In contrast, the ARC pushes the cyclist forward with negative drag of up to -7* watts. 11

WHEELS - ROAD

PERFOR MANCE — LEAD THE RIDE Performance is the part of your energy that is brought to the road. And that part is pretty big with DT Swiss Performance wheels. Just what you need when you are leading your buddies up epic mountain roads or when making the decisive move on the days last descent.

18

DT Swiss Performance wheels rely on our huge experience in manufacturing every single component of a wheel, as well as employing state of the art technology in doing so. This gives every Performance wheel a class leading light-stiff-reliable ratio. Just the right tool for you to race: your competition, your friends or up a lonely mountain pass. COLD FORGED SPOKES Spokes are crucial to the performance and behaviour of a wheel. From the best raw material suppliers to our fully in-house manufacturing process, every detail matters. DT Swiss Performance wheels mostly use Aerolite and Aerocomp spokes, which undergo two cold forging processes: Butting and blading. The resulting products are light and strong, just what’s needed when you want a springy, reactive ride. • • • •

STRENGTHENED MATERIAL STRUCTURE & WEIGHT SAVINGS HIGH PRECISION DIMENSIONS WITHIN A FEW HUNDREDTHS OF A MILLIMETER BLADING PRESS FORCE: 250 TONNES A SINGLE 3G SPOKE RESISTS TO A 240 KG LOAD

LEAN CARBON Nothing beats the feeling of accelerating a light and stiff wheel. To achieve ultimate levels of strength to weight, the highest-end Performance wheels feature carbon rims. Our carbon engineers take great care when designing the moulds, defining the materials employed and when working out the tiniest process details. DT Swiss partners with the best manufacturing suppliers who are able to fulfill our demands with their unparalleled production know how. Finally the product emerges mean and lean, with perfect surfaces, both inside and outside, and a high fibre / low resin ratio, just like the best athletes.

19

ADVANCED KNOW-HOW

PERFORMANCE SETUP

At the centre of the wheel a hubshell has to withstand all the loads coming in through the spokes from accelerating, braking, cornering and road obstacles. All this while transmitting the rider’s energy coming through the freewheel. By employing advanced FEA computer analysis, DT Swiss is able to produce light yet reliable parts, Swiss precision machining and the best alloys available ensure you are out there with the best possible components!

With their 18mm inner rim width, Performance wheels are aero optimised to deliver the least drag and a controlled handling when used with 23-25mm wide tyres. This is the right size tyre for a lightweight, yet very aero setup.

OBSESSIVE TESTING A lot of testing happens before a dream ride hits the road. DT Swiss uses its fully equipped, in-house testing workshop to push its wheels to the limits long before they see tarmac. Fatigue testing, stiffness testing, pinch flat testing, salt spray testing. Testing testing testing, to ensure you can go out on your DT Swiss wheels and hammer away, day after day, in all conditions. And when you are flying down that screaming fast descent, you can relax knowing that our IAM Cycling World Tour pro riders have done just that, time and time again, long before your wheels carried a sticker.

OXiC TECHNOLOGY

OXiC is a process in which a ceramic coating is electromechanically applied to the rim surface, making it extremely hard and wear resistant. The OXiC process achieves a high end looking, matte black finish which also guarantees the highest level of brake performance while reducing wear on the rim to the absolute minimum. OXiC - THE PROCESS

OXiC - THE ADVANTAGES

The ceramic layer is achieved similarly to anodising, by submerging the rim in an electrolyte solution while applying an electrical tension between the rims as one electrode and the container as the other. The decisive difference between anodising and OXiC lies in the millions of plasma discharges that occur between the electrolyte and the rim, applying high temperature and pressure on the developing oxide layer. Due to that, the developing oxide layer melts, flows and solidifies again. During this process the amorphous (not aligned) structure of the oxide converts to a crystalline (aligned) one. This is why OXiC is so hard and wear resistant.

• Extremely good and consistent brake performance in all conditions. • The OXiC rim surface is so hard, that the rim will not be affected by wear over the normal lifespan of a wheel. The only part that wears out is the brake pad. • Since the ceramic layer is applied through a conversion coating process, the OXiC coating is able to deform with the rim, maintaining its superior properties even under high mechanical loads (conventional ceramic coatings tend to crack when exposed to mechanical stress). • The OXiC coating process uses no volatile organic compounds or heavy metals, making it a very environmentally friendly technology. • Black rims that stay black: Since the OXiC does not contain any inks or dyes it is totally UV stable and won’t fade or discolour in the sun.

ALUMINIUM ALUMINIUM BASE MATERIA L

ANODISED ALUMINIUM HARDENED STEEL SAND

OXiC HARDNESS

OXiC - THE STRUCTURE

OXiC - THE COMPARISON

Because of the way OXiC is formed, it has far better adhesion to the aluminium than traditional coatings such as anodising. It also performs better on sharp corners and technical courses, making sure the rims are protected all around.

Conventional rims use aluminium brake surfaces. The comparison of different materials impressively shows the superior hardness of the OXiC coating. And in this context hardness equals wear resistance. 27

WHEELS - ROAD

ENDURANCE

— LONG DAYS OUT Endurance means to pursue a goal, no matter what might happen on the way. Each and every wheel of the DT Swiss Endurance line up is designed with this goal in mind. They unite top notch aerodynamics with comfort and reliability. Now bring on the cobbles, rain and headwind situations.

Based on the AERO+ concept they unite top notch aerodynamics with comfort and reliability, delivering the best performance - no matter which road you choose and giving you all the more reasons to get out and ride - long days out. AERO+ Aero+ describes our approach to optimise each wheel set via numerous engineering techniques all through its development process to guarantee the resulting product performs as good as humanly possible at a given moment in human and technological development. Aero+ is based on three pillars: DRAG, HANDLING & EFFICIENCY.

DRAG The pinnacle of the Endurance category - the ERC 1100 DICUT® has super low drag numbers at all relevant yaw angles. Best of all, it is right in the ballpark with the competition both when run with 25mm and 28mm tyres. The transition area of the rim is shaped in a way that allows the airflow to stay attached to the tyre and the rim, despite the 19mm inner rim width. The point of stall is shifted into the direction of the rim bend, which has a positive influence on the slipstream and minimises drag. The profile curvature prevents an early stall and aligns the slipstream to profit from a sailing effect.

HANDLING The complete bike only makes up for 25% of the overall drag, while the rider causes 75% of it. So why is the wheel still important in this calculation? Here’s the graph that explains why: The ERC 1100 DICUT® is the best handling wheel in wind situations commonly found on the road. This is true independent of the tyre width and riding speed. The steering moment shows a smooth, linear behaviour, which allows the rider to stay in the aero position - directly influencing the 75% of overall drag.

EFFICIENCY Comfort, grip and rolling resistance define efficiency. Wheels have a direct and important effect on how the tyres perform regarding comfort, grip and rolling resistance. During the development of the ERC 1100 DICUT® we have paid close attention to these factors as they play an integral role in the Aero+ concept, because you can only stay aero when you stay in control. A wider contact area and lower pressure of the tyre result in more grip and more comfort. The wider rim supports those wider tyres better. Therefore it allows for more aggressive cornering before the tyre starts to fold or to run lower pressures respectively.

At the same pressure 28mm tyres have lower rolling resistance than 25mm tyres. The same tyre rolls better the higher the pressure (measured on an 18mm internal width rim with Continental GP4000S.

WHEELS - ROAD

CROSS ROAD — RIDE IT ALL Crossroad stands for those “there may be a road” rides. Inspired by the tough world of cyclocross, DT Swiss Crossroad wheels perform on any surface, whether you choose to explore new roads or that muddy double track that ends up to be a single trail. So where was that road again?

To ride a drop bar bike on any terrain and in all conditions takes skill and a solid wheelset. The Crossroad wheel line up has our road and MTB know-how in its genes, leaving you with all options open when your road ride turns into an offroad adventure and vice versa.

READY FOR TRACTION Crossroad wheels feature wide rims. So wide, they can fit tyres of a width up to 47mm. The level of comfort, grip and puncture proofness that comes with such a wheel and tyre setup, especially when run tubeless, really lets you choose the road you want.

USE SPECIFIC RIM PROFILES

TOP-NOTCH RELIABILITY

The rim profile is decisive for the properties of the final product. DT Swiss precisely works out all the details to produce a product that is light, strong and reliable. The hooks are thick enough to withstand pinch flats, the rim bed is shaped for tubeless tyres to easily pop into place and the bead seats are designed so the setup stays airtight at all times.

Riding rattly gravel roads for countless miles or body-checking other cyclocross riders is hard on the material. DT Swiss products are known to be amongst the most reliable and durable out there. But a clean and regrease of the freewheel or a check of the spoke tension every now and then is very welcome nonetheless. When it’s time to do so, the no-tool architecture of the hub and external nipples make it a breeze, and you are back on the bike in no time.

WHEELS - ROAD

GRAVEL — UNPAVED ADVENTURES No cars, pure nature and endless miles of unpaved roads ahead. The DT Swiss Gravel wheels offer the perfect blend of comfort, durability and off-road performance. Made for all those adventures far away from the tarmac.

The GRAVEL category marks a new segment within the DT Swiss road-line-up and adds to our holistic approach of covering all segments of road riding with sophisticated and advanced products. Currently the hottest discussed trend in road cycling, we defined this new segment and have developed a benchmark setting product portfolio.

THE DEFINITION While many bike manufacturers already distinguish between Gravel and Cyclocross bikes, most wheel manufacturers haven’t reacted yet. With the introduction of Gravel-specific wheelsets, we are closing this gap and offer products that have been specifically developed for the purpose of gravel riding. One example of this specific development process has been the implementation of 650b wheels into the new wheel line-up. Another important key feature is the further increased rim inner width of 24mm that leads to even better rolling resistance - compared to our Cross Road wheels - and improved tyre support of bulky gravel tyres.

GRAVEL

VERSUS

CROSS ROAD

THE KEY FACTORS Compared to other segments, such as Aero or Track, the Gravel segment itself is quite diverse with different types of gravel riding. Especially when it comes to the tyre choice, options are numerous and the influence of different tyres on the riding characteristics of your bike are significant. Reason enough for us to split up the segment into two major parts.

GRAVEL RACING

GRAVEL ADVENTURE

• AERODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE • ROLLING RESISTANCE • TRACTION

• DURABILITY • COMFORT • EASY TO SERVICE

Depending on your individual preference, our gravel wheel line-up delivers the perfect solution for every kind of rider. Racing enthusiasts will rather opt for the aerodynamically optimised GRC 1400 SPLINE® 42 wheels set in 700c with fast and (compared to other gravel tyres) narrow 35mm tyres, while adventure seeking bikepacking riders may prefer the reliable GR 1600 SPLINE® 25 in 650b, offering maximum comfort and durability.

THE OPTIONS Our gravel wheels have run through one of the biggest and most detailed product testing processes ever done for DT Swiss wheels. Next to the extensive in-house tests, such as impact, long-term fatigue resistance or stiffness testing, the aerodynamic performance as well as the rolling resistance with several different wheel-tyre combinations has been tested. The results of these ongoing tests are building up one of the most holistic and detailed databases of gravel wheel characteristics.

WHEELS - ROAD

TRACK — THE PURE LINE In our mind, the track can be a line in the velodrome or your visualised line through city traffic. Simplicity is key, from the minimalistic graphics to the purist hubs and the classic wheel build. DT Swiss Track wheels are a beautiful choice, whether your loop ends at the finish line or at your doorstep.

Designed as a riding tool and reduced to the essential features of durability, stiffness and aerodynamics. DT Swiss Track wheels combine classic wheel building technology with a minimalistic design, letting you focus on the ride, and only the ride.

DIFFERENT TRACKS For proper track use, the 18mm inner width of the Track rims is designed to match up with 23mm tyres, giving great aerodynamics and low rolling resistance when run at the high pressures only possible on the purpose-built velodrome surfaces. When your track includes bumps and traffic lights, the 25mm setup works just as fine. It still delivers great aerodynamics and it is a little more biased towards grip and tyre support, for aggressive street cornering action.

STRONG TRADITION Track cycling is a traditional sport, and DT Swiss Track wheels are just a traditional while integrating state of the art technology. A classic front radial and rear two-cross build with symmetric spoke angles results in ultra stiff wheels. The just as classic largediameter hub flanges slacken the spoke angles to add further lateral stiffness. Perfect for railing corners on your local crit or for outsprinting your competition on the Tuesday night races.

ALLOY OPTIONS

CARBON OPTIONS

• Bombproof rims, inherently stiff • Extra-wide butted and bladed Aerocomp spokes, stiff and fast looking. • When the street riding gets rough: easy service through external spoke nipples. • High-end Japanese steel bearings running in Swiss precision machined bearing seats: superior smoothness and 100% riding enjoyment are the result.

• Lightweight, full carbon rims with top notch aerodynamics • Japanese SINC ceramic bearings running in Swiss precision machined bearing seats for ultimate smoothness. • High-end, forged and machined Chro-Moly axle is stiff and smooth. • Noble, stealth black appearance.

As soon as tubulars are being glued to rims, it means racing is taken very seriously. And the TRC 1400 DICUT® is every bit as serious about it. It’s the ideal choice when you’re all about fighting for back wheels. The full carbon rim covers two of the main criteria for going fast on a fixed bike: It is super light and boasts high stiffness values due to its large cross section. The punchiness of the wheel is further enhanced by lightweight bladed spokes in a stiff build package. A perfect platform to sneak out from behind that back wheel and take over command.

DT AEROLITE® & DT AERO COMP SPOKES The higher inherent stiffness of the carbon rim compared with an aluminium rim allows the use of ultralight DT AEROLITE and AERO COMP, ensuring perfect wheel stiffness.

LIGHTWEIGHT ALLOY VALVE 40% weight saving compared with brass valves. Integrated valve tool in top cap. Conical valve base ensures tight fitting.

HIGHER SPEED

The low weight of the 1200 SPLINE reduces the moment of inertia and increases acceleration, leading to higher average speeds compared with aluminium wheels with the same energy input.

ENERGY

SPEED =

INERTIA MOMENT + ROLLING RESISTANCE + GRADE RESISTANCE + DRAG

Physically, performance on a mountain bike can be considered as invested energy in relation to the main resistance and moment of inertia. The moment of inertia describes the wheel’s resistance to a change in its rotational movement and is, therefore, relevant for acceleration. It is defined by the masses (mi) of the components (i) and their distance (ri) to the hub.

INERTIA MOMENT = ∑mi x ri2 The lighter individual components of a carbon wheel allow its moment of inertia to be kept low, thus increasing acceleration and average speed.

XRC 1200 SPLINE® 30mm INNER WIDTH LESS ROLLING RESISTANCE Cross-Country wheels are made to be fast and this makes it necessary to reduce resistance where possible. On a rough surface, rolling resistance can be up to 69% of total resistance. Rolling resistance is defined as: rolling resistance coefficient x weight x gravitational acceleration. Whereas the coefficient is defined by the wheel size; tyre section; tyre characteristics, tyre pressure, tread, soil. While most of those factors cannot be influenced by the wheel, we can modify the tyre support. A wider rim provides improved tyre support which allows lower pressure and leads to less rolling resistance on rough tracks.

HIGHER TYRE SUPPORT ALLOWING LOWER PRESSURE During cornering, lateral forces occur which act on the tyre. The tyre’s contact patch moves in the opposite direction to the lateral force. When riding through a corner with a narrow rim, the tyre’s contact patch is no longer above the flange of the narrow rim. The tyre is no longer supported by the rim and folds, resulting in an unstable riding experience. This folding creates tension over the tyre which pulls on the opposite bead and causes a loss of air between the tyre bead and the rim bed, so called tyre burping. The tyre contact patch of the wide rim is inside the rim flanges. The side wall of the tyre is supported by the wide rim which increases control. A wider rim can therefore be ridden with lower air pressure than a narrower rim.

LOW TYRE PRESSURE

HIGH TYRE PRESSURE

LOWER AIR PRESSURE LESS ROLLING RESISTANCE A wheel with low tyre pressure will roll better over rough surfaces than a wheel with high pressure, as the tyre can adapt better to the ground. A wheel with high air pressure cannot absorb obstacles and the bike must move upwards, comparable to lifting work, which increases rolling resistance. Less air pressure leads to less fatigue, because as a rider you also have less lifting work to do.

XMC 1200 SPLINE® WEIGHT-TO-DURABILITY OPTIMISED CARBON LAYUP The most beautiful trails can often only be reached by your own muscle power. Long ascents and carrying passages require a light wheelset. On the descent, however, the wheel must be stable enough to withstand obstacles like roots and rocks. This is exactly what the new XMC 1200 rim was developed for.

LIGHT WEIGHT EFFICIENT UPHILLS The low weight of the XMC 1200 SPLINE reduces the moment of inertia, allowing a higher speed to be achieved with the same energy input compared with aluminum wheels. The low moment of inertia saves energy and allows longer ascents.

STRONG ON DESCENTS The impact resistance lies between the EXC and XRC. The XMC 1200 is classified as ASTM Category 4 with a maximum system weight of 110 kg, which represents the use of components under the conditions in very rough, blocked terrain. Exactly what you need for your adventures.

EXC 1200 SPLINE® IMPACT RESISTANCE OPTIMISED CARBON LAYUP DT Swiss rims are known for their impact resistance. We have high requirements for the impact resistance of an enduro rim. More than 20 different carbon architecture layups with different materials were tested until the impact strength met our high standards. The key factors for an impact- resistant rim are the arrangement of the individual carbon layers, the ideal ratio between resin and carbon fibers and meticulous production process control. All these factors make the EXC 1200 SPLINE one of the most impact-resistant carbon enduro rims on the market.

THE RESULT BENCHMARK Our internal tests showed that the measurements were successful. We defined our impact resistance requirements based on experience with our aluminium rims. The comparison to our competitors with two of the most relevant carbon rim producers showed that we have higher demands for the impact strength of an Enduro rim. The DT Swiss EXC 1200 Spline was able to absorb 18% more energy without a critical failure.

THE TESTING CLOSE TO REALITY We conduct extensive product tests in our internal test center. In addition to the tests prescribed by the UCI, we are constantly developing new product tests. The aim is to reproduce as accurately as possible the damage patterns that occur in reality. We test impact resistance using a so-called “puncture test”. The aim of this test is to investigate the local fracture behaviour of the rim, which is known from the field, e.g. when you hit a stone or a root.

ONISED WHY USE CARBON? Carbon makes it possible to build lighter wheels, which improve riding behaviour of the specific wheels for various fields of application. By further improving 1501 SPLINE ONE wheels, we are able to reduce the weight by up to 180 g per wheel set compared to the previous generation while preserving its values.

83

REQUIREMENT-SPECIFIC CARBON RIMS Carbon enables us to produce a 30 mm wide Cross Country rim which greatly supports modern XC tyres allowing lower tyre pressure and therefore reducing rolling resistance on rough surfaces. Not only does the XC wheel benefit from the low weight of a carbon rim, also our All mountain and Enduro specific wheels profit from the low moment of inertia that a carbon rim offers granting a snappy acceleration, precise handling and high speeds.

COMPETITION RACE® SPOKES Thanks to the higher inherent stiffness of the carbon rim, compared to an aluminium rim, the use of ultra light DT Competition Race spokes ensure perfect wheel stiffness for precise riding without being too stiff. The spokes use a middle section which is 1.6 mm thin – allowing further weight savings on the new 1501 SPLINE ONE with no compromise on durability.

240 HUB RATCHET EXP Lighter, stiffer, more precise, and even easier to maintain – the new 240 EXP hub is a must for 1501 SPLINE ONE wheels. The RATCHET EXP freehub system, which comes with 36 points of engagement transfers the pedalling load directly to the trail and is more durable than ever.

XR

XRC 1501 SPLINE® ONE CROSS COUNTRY

WIDER MEANS LIGHTER Cross Country wheels are ideal for fast racing; therefore it’s necessary to minimise resistance wherever possible. On a rough surface, rolling resistance can make up to 69% of the total resistance.

LOWER AIR PRESSURE LESS ROLLING RESISTANCE A wheel with low tyre pressure will always roll over rough surfaces more easily than a wheel with high pressure, as the tyre is able to adapt to the ground. A wheel with a high air pressure cannot absorb obstacles and the bike must move upwards, comparable to lifting work, which increases rolling resistance. Less air pressure leads to less fatigue, as the rider has to invest less lifting work.

XMC 1501 SPLINE® ONE ALL MOUNTAIN

WEIGHT-TO-DURABILITY OPTIMISED CARBON LAYUP Sometimes, the most beautiful trails can only be conquered by your own muscle power. Long ascents and carrying passages require a light wheel set. When descending, however, the wheel must be stable enough to withstand obstacles like roots and rocks. This is exactly what the XMC 1501 SPLINE® ONE rim has been designed for.

LIGHTWEIGHT EFFICIENT UPHILLS The low weight of the XMC 1501 SPLINE® ONE reduces the moment of inertia, allowing a higher speed with the same amount of energy compared to aluminium wheels. The low moment of inertia saves energy on ascents and allows for more fun on descents.

EX

EXC 1501 SPLINE® ONE ENDURO

LESS WEIGHT BETTER HANDLING When developing an Enduro wheel our main focus is on impact resistance. The reason for this is quite clear - when riding through the chunkiest trails, you want a wheel you can trust. Along with high impact resistance, our goal was to reduce the weight of wheels. A lighter wheel is nimbler and more precise, enabling the rider to be in total control of their direction, and helps to hit even the trickiest line precisely. Due to lower rotational mass, less braking power is needed to slow down; the rider has less mass to control, and is therefore able to manoeuvre the bike more easily - saving valuable energy on long descents. These are the reasons why we decided to upgrade to carbon.

6 BOLT BRAKE INTERFACE Due to popular demand from Enduro riders, EXC 1501 SPLINE® ONE wheels are offered with a Center Lock disc interface and now also an additional 6-bolt option – letting the rider choose the perfect system for their needs.

BENCHMARK ALLOY RIMS Looking at the market and various surveys, we saw that most mountain bikers choose alloy rims to build their wheel sets. DT Swiss rims are known and valued for their low weight, high quality and strength. Top notch alloy rims are all welded today and so are ours. In combination with our unique PHR nipplespoke interface washer, which distribute the load on a large area, we were able to reduce the wall thickness, keeping the rotational mass low. To meet the requirements of the various fields of application we developed specific rim profiles.

COMP SPOKES The competition spoke is one of the most versatile spokes in the DT Swiss spoke range. DT Competition® gets its special strength from a specific cold forging process. This process has been developed and patented by DT Swiss; it is used to double-butt the diameter of the spokes. Oscillating hammers rotate around the wire. As a result the spoke material is densified and its diameter is reduced. This cold forging process helps hardens the material while ensuring that it retains its good ductility. The result is a spoke with a slim butted section for low weight and a strong head and thread for durability. This leads to extremely high durability and, furthermore, thanks to the thinner middle section, it is lighter than a spoke with a constant diameter of 2.0 mm.

BOMBPROOF 350 HUB The DT Swiss 350 is equipped with our famous Ratchet System. What makes the Ratchet System hubs truly unique, is the fact that all the teeth of the two ratchets engage simultaneously and create a large contact surface to transmit huge torque. The fact that the whole front faces engage, creates much smaller point loads. The result is the legendary reliability of the Ratchet System. Thanks to the no-tool concept, the hub is very easy to maintain and the free hub body can be converted without the use of any tools. For the new 1700 SPLINE® the 350 was upgraded by a 36T Ratchet SL system (SL stands for super lightweight achieved by machined out ratchets). It reduces the engagement angle to 10 degrees, which we believe is the sweet spot in terms of reliability, weight and power transmission. 100

CROSS COUNTRY XR 391 The XC-workhorse in our portfolio, the XR 391, has been developed to create a fast accelerating wheel. Therefore the focus was set on a low weight, which is the reason why it has 25 mm rim inner width. This contributes to a low inertia moment.

ALL MOUNTAIN XM 481 The XM 481 is our all-mountain rim. Our goal was to develop a 30 mm wide alloy rim, which strikes the ideal balance between weight and durability. Like the EX 511 the XM 481 has an ASTM ranking 4, but its max system weight is lighter (10 kg), at 120 kg. This difference comes from slightly thinner sidewalls, enabling us to reduce the weight for efficient acceleration, around 50 g.

ENDURO EX 511 The EX 511 is one of the toughest rims out there, not just because of the welded joint, also because of the specifically developed rim profile. The rim is designed for modern Enduro mountain biking. We shouldn’t communicate on the subject, since it wasn’t developed for that purpose, but some of the fastest downhill racers use it for racing – what we want to say: it is strong, damn strong! With its 30 mm inner width it’s wider than its sibling, the famous EX 471.
