W H EN H E PA S S ES T H E WO RLD S TO P S AT H I S EY ES As James Maher well describes, Street photography at its essence means candid photography of people and humanity. A street photograph has to be a real, unposed moment. Trying to define street photography is almost like trying to define what is sweet or salty. You can’t fully describe it, but you know it when you see it. Street photographers are observers, “flâneurs” by nature. It is a way of connecting with the world and bringing back the moments that stand out. It can be likened to a visual form of poetry – while beauty and form are important aspects of street photography, great street photographs often have something going on beneath the surface. That’s just what I think about Albert Sieber and his photographic work. I had contact with Albert’s work a few months ago, when I had the chance of visualizing his work for the first time and invite him for one of our thematic editions. Not long after that book came out he was “targeted” for an invitation to publish a monographic book. The reasons were several: the careful black & white photo edition, the magnificent aesthetics, and the sensitivity of the captures… Make no mistake: nothing you see in this surprising book is made by chance. It takes brains, study, miles of walking and sometimes waiting, and a look that ends at a very special collection of strong and meaningful frameworks, not within everyone’s reach. That’s why “En Passant” is a book that I am really proud to publish, and that’s also why Albert is one of my favorite “street photographers”.

ALBERT SIEBER

EN PASSANT

ALBERT SIEBER At the age of sixteen I started taking pictures. It was soon obvious, that this fascinating medium would accompany me all my life. And the thought matured, when I get older, I will find a nice place with a large-format camera and tripod and wait until the moment comes with the right light, that gives me the one picture, with which I return home in the evening. Now my hair is gray and it’s exactly the opposite. My camera is fast and agile, with only one lens to react promptly. I’m out on the streets of the city, constantly moving to shoot my subjects, practically in passing, sometimes without stopping in the movement. En passant.
