Message from Assemblyman Mark Gjonaj

I

am honored and humbled to be your representative in the New York State Assembly. It is such a privilege to be the first Albanian-American elected official in Albany. This privilege was made possible by living in America, a country that embraces and provides opportunities to people from all over the world. I attribute my success and accomplishments to the ongoing support of my community, and I am deeply indebted to all of my family, friends and neighbors for their inspiration. Through your generosity and support I am able to share our culture and honor the accomplishments of Albanians with the people of New York State. It is my goal to see Albanian-Americans unify to make our community stronger, more influential and more successful in our efforts to better our lives in America, our lands of origin and the world.

This is just the beginning of a very exciting journey for our Albanian-American community. We have grown and progressed greatly in a short period of time. However, while we have accomplished much, still more must be done. My priorities propose to strengthen our culture, promote our language and traditions, honor our obligations to our seniors, invest in our children, and ensure a prosperous future for generations to come. SHARE THE VISION AND GET INVOLVED! Respectfully, Mark Gjonaj

63

These are my priorities, which will require us to come together to ensure that our community continues to thrive and prosper.

• Albanian-American Community Center – I am working on establishing our own Albanian-American Community Center where we can hold community events, preserve our culture and language, provide a safe and educational place for our children to play and learn, and provide a soothing environment for our elderly to spend time and be cared for in their native language.

• Voter Registration Drive – I am a firm believer that the grassroots effort to register all eligible Albanian-Americans to vote is our path to better representation in government and a better future for our people. We need to make our voices heard and the best way to accomplish that is to ensure that all our brethren are registered to vote and become active in the political process, irrespective of their domicile in the United States.

• NBDC Political Club – Albanian-Americans need more integration into the political establishment. Our next stage of growth toward that integration should take place where we live and work. To that extent, we have created the NBDC Political Club to promote the interests of the community and raise awareness about issues important to us.

• Albanians for a Better New York (PAC) – In order to make a political difference, we need a political action committee (PAC) that can support and bring to the attention of elected officials the issues that impact Albanian-Americans and our

64

communities. The Albanians for a Better New York PAC was created to support those in elected office and those seeking to be elected that understand our issues and fight for our needs.

• Federation of Albanian American Businesses – It is time for Albanian-American business owners and entrepreneurs to unite and cooperate. Such cooperation will result in the law of large numbers benefitting our businesses and our people. Regardless of the industry we are in, Albanians need to unite to obtain more attractive terms from their suppliers, external partners or stakeholders. Initially, by unifying business owners in the restaurant, real estate and construction industries, we will be able to establish a general fund where proceeds from part of the savings will be used to help our community by offering scholarships, helping the less fortunate, and addressing the overall needs of our community. • Albanian-American Financial Institution – I am exploring the creation of a partnership with a banking institution that will meet the needs of and benefit our businesses and community.

• Albanian American Calendar – Our growing and active community has many overlapping events and activities. My solution is a community calendar for all to share and list their activities, events and information. I have created a universal web portal for all Albanian-American related events and activities which can be found at www.albanian-american.org .

The time to act is now! Share the vision, get involved, and make a difference for yourself, our community, our children and our future!
