Negative Space Nail Art One of the most important nail trends for 2015 is negative space nail art, inspired by the skin revealing fabric cut-outs used in fashion. In this trend the nail colour is applied onto striping tape, which is afterwards removed, leaving a so called ‘negative space’ while revealing the natural nail underneath. ProNails reinvents the trend, by making sure the natural nail is revealed in all its perfection as a naturally thin yet ultra-strong gel nail. To take the trend to the next level, we also created silver and golden see-through rings and frames, which are the perfect nail decorations for these linear ‘see-through’ designs.

STEP BY STEP NEGATIVE SPACES by Sandrine Roelants
USING COLOUR GEL & NAIL POLISH 1. Start with a natural thin French manicure in gel. 2. In places where there shouldn’t be any nail polish, apply striping tape. For a wider space, stick 2 pieces half over each other in order to prevent nail polish from slipping under the tape. 3. Start with Nail Polish n°367 Clean Slate and continue with the white areas using Nail Polish n° 369 Clear Mind. 4. Remove the striping tape while the nail polish is still wet. Finish off with a layer of Seco Seco. By applying the Negative Space Nail Art in nail polish on top of gel nails, it can be easily removed with nail polish remover.

This season prints are often very graphic with a strong focus on linear elements. They trick the eye by playing with perspective, and add texture and depth by playing with transparency. ProNails did the work for you, and created two new semi-transparent nail design patches: Liquid Lines and Clear Cubes. While adding the power of print to your nails, these nail designs offer endless possibilities for creating contemporary nail looks.

File the nails in a ballerina shape and work out a gradient effect from left to right using Gellak n°154 Good Vibes Only and Gellak n°71 Bianchissimo. To apply this ombre technique, you need to apply the colours next to each other leaving a little bit of space in between. This way you’ll prevent the colours from mixing up. Next you use a Gelinsky Premium Brush 7 to blend the colours together perfectly. For smaller nails you want to use the Slim Nail Art Brush 3 or Slim Nail Art Brush 2. Cleanse the brush after each application. Let it cure. 2. Repeat step 1 for a second and covering coat. 3. Cut out 2 triangles of Nail Design Patch Liquid Lines for index and middle finger. Remove the white base foil, stick the triangle where it should go and press lightly. Next, remove the transparent foil on top. Press the patch again softly where needed. Apply a coat of Crystal Seal and let it cure. 4. Draw a fine line using Gellak n°71 Bianchissimo around the edges of the Nail Design Patch and towards the free edge of the nail and let it cure.

USING COLOUR GEL 1. Apply a coat of Gellak n°154 Good Vibes Only to the ring finger and let it cure. Apply another thin coat and don’t cure it. Apply the deco glitters from the glitter tower Clear Mind using the tip of your brush and let it cure. 2. Cut out some pieces of Nail Design Patch Liquid Lines. Remove the white base foil, stick the pieces where they should go and press lightly. Next, remove the transparent foil on top. Press the patch again softly where needed. Apply a coat of Crystal Seal and let it cure. 3. Using Gellak n°71 Bianchissimo draw fine geometrical white lines all over the nail and let them cure.

Heritage
Celebrating together has always been a part of our culture. Here in Europe we have a rich cultural heritage. Every town has its own beautiful folk style to decorate its holiday traditions. Lately there has been a strong interest in original handmade folk art. The intensity of the colourful patterns and the use of traditional techniques and materials give us the sense of authenticity and nostalgia we long for. This fashion season the joyful spirit and rich colour usage of various European folk styles brought liveliness and poetry to the catwalks. Designers are using a lot of traditional handmade techniques like embroidery and knit-work. At Chanel the royal Austrian heritage is combined with Tiroler folk style. Dolce and Gabanna stays true to their Sicilian roots, and even Dior has an East-European Folky edge this season.

Typical in folk style is the use of cheerful flower patterns in vivid colours, embroidered by hand on linen white shirts, black velvet vests or silk scarfs in burgundy or dark blue. Key colours are the typical folk red and pine green, combined with contrasting white and black.

Shape the nails in a rounded square. Start with 2 layers of Gellak n°150 Yes Your Majesty on all nails. Buff all nails using the Soft Finisher. To obtain the blue colour you blend Propaints Oceano, Divine and Ultramarine. Use the Kolinsky Art Brush 2 to draw the blue waving lines. Draw small fine stripes next to the blue waving lines as seen in the picture, to make it look like fabric stitches. You can use the Deco Tool Deluxe to apply the different dots. 5. Draw the red flowers using the Deco Tool Deluxe and Propaint Pepper. 6. Propaint Divine is used to draw the white dots and the fine white waving lines. 7. To finish off draw a few fine green leaves. You’ll have to use the Kolinsky Art Brush 2 again and blend Propaint Pine and Divine. 8. Finish off with Diamond Seal and let it cure.

DIAMOND SEAL
Shape the nails in a rounded square nail shape and apply Gellak n°148 Highlands Heritage and Gellak n°151 in two layers as seen in the picture. To refine the lining between the two colours you can use a Gelinsky Precision Brush 4 to correct the corner. Cure before starting application of the second colour in order to avoid blending both colours. Buff the nails using the Soft Finisher. Draw a vertical line on the side of the little finger and thumb using Propaint Divine. Then draw fine stripes to the left and right of these lines in a lighter shade of blue. In order to get this colour you need to blend Propaint Divine and Oceano. Next draw all nail art on the green areas using a Kolinsky Art Brush 0. Start blending Propaint Divine and Rouge de Rose for the pale pink flowers. Make these by drawing fine lines out of a small central dot. The white curls are next – use Propaint Divine for these. Then blend Propaint Divine and Lemon to draw all small yellow details such as the dots in the flowers and little leaves around some of the white curls. For the blue flowers you need to blend Propaint Divine and Oceano. Draw them fanshaped from a central dot. To finish the nail art draw details such as leaves and small lines in two different shades of green. You can blend Propaint Divine and Pine or you can use Propaint Bohemian Green. Set a straight line using Propaint Lemon between the red and green areas. To fixate Propaint perfectly and to make sure the gloss stays on well, it’s best to apply a thin layer of Ultra Thin Base gel. Finish using Diamond Seal and cure.

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE PASSION, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE PN: Where does your passion for nails come from? I am a perfectionist, and I wanted to do something creative with my life. Before I started as a nail stylist, I was already painting on canvas in my spare time. Being passionate about art I asked myself one day, why not create art on my nails? I always had a thing for nice hands with beautiful nails. When it comes to first impressions, hands in particular are important since we use them whenever we greet someone. PN: How did you start as a ProNails nail stylist? I started out with doing my own nails. After a while, I got requests from friends and family to take care of their hands too. Next thing you know, I opened my first salon in 2009. In my salon I really want people to feel good. It is very important to have a fresh, modern and welcoming space, with quality services ànd products. Initially I worked with other gel brands. However, the lack of quality or support made me look further. When I found ProNails, I completely fell for it. I was delighted with the quality and results of the products, and the support the brand gives to professionals. That’s why I have decided to convert my salon into a ProNails Premium Salon, which I am really looking forward too. In my opinion, it is a modern brand with high quality products for a good price, which respects the health of our hands and feet. With Pronails I feel confident, and every season they bring me the latest trends. PN: How did you go from being a nail stylist to being a nail art teacher? My first focus has always been my salon clients, but after a while I got a lot of appreciation for my work from other professionals, who asked me for advice. I love sharing knowledge with other professionals, and one day I was invited to give a training. In my trainings I help nail stylists discover various techniques, and various usages for each product. I really believe that giving quality nail service is determined for 90% by the quality of the products you work with, and the rest is of course technical experience and personal creativity. It is gratifying to see the professionals leaving my trainings full of enthousiasm to go and recreate what they have learned. PN: What inspired you to create the Nail Art ‘Trajes de Viana do Castelo’? My city (Viana do Castelo) is my great inspiration. I love its traditions, customs and festivals, and especially our traditional costumes, which are such inspiring pieces with their gold and embroideries. But we also have the beauty of the sea and the beautiful surroundings to inspire us. When I was asked to create a Nail Art for the Heritage collection, I found my inspiration in the Viana costumes. The predominant colours are red and green, embroidered with floral themes. 1. Apply 2 coats of Gellak n°149 Russian Rose to all nails and let it cure. 2. Cut out pieces of Nail Design Patch Folk Flowers White in the desired shapes. Remove the white base foil of the Nail Design Patch, stick the pieces where they should go and press lightly. Next, remove the transparent foil on top. Press the patch again softly where needed. Let it cure. Apply a coat of Crystal Seal and sparkle on a small amount of Glitter Powder Fire Sparks. Let it cure for 60 seconds. 3. Take your Kolinsky Art Brush 0 and draw a small piece of lace around the Nail Design Patch with Gellak n°26 Black Saint. Let it cure for 30 seconds. 4. Apply dots using the Deco Tool Deluxe in Gellak n°71 Bianchissimo. Let it cure for 30 seconds again. 5. Again apply dots in Gellak n°151 Folksy Frock and let it cure for 30 seconds. 6. Finish of with some more dots in PNC n°3 Sunshine. Let it cure for another 30 seconds and remove the sticky residue using the Acetone Free Remover.

Shape the nails in a rounded square nail shape and apply two coats of Gellak n°152 Blood Sisters. After curing, the Gellak needs to be buffed with the Soft Finisher. Draw the damask motive using a Kolinsky Art Brush 0 in PNC n°243 Python Poison and cure in The Light for 4 times 60 seconds. Don’t remove the sticky residue – you need it to apply the Nail Foil Bronze. Apply a coat of Diamond Seal to all nails and let it cure for 5 seconds. After this apply another coat of Diamond Seal and let it cure for 60 seconds. Buff all nails using the Soft Finisher afterwards. Apply a drop of Diamond Seal to a mixing board and use the Kolinsky Art Brush 0 to draw the shapes on the Nail Foil Bronze. Let it cure for 2 times 60 seconds.

Take your Kolinsky Art Brush n° 3, and apply three horizontal colour blocks using a thin layer of Gellak colours n° 148 Highlands Heritage, n° 119 Sunbleached and n° 151 Folksy Frock. Cure, repeat with a second layer and cure again. Draw very fine lines in the green colour block with Gellak n° 119 Sunbleached, using your Kolinsky Art brush n° 0. Let it cure. Use the same brush and draw a vertical line across the three colour blocks with Gellak n° 46 Tango Tango. Before curing, make fine diagonal scratches into it using your Deco Tool. Let it cure again. Repeat this on the left and right side from the central vertical line with Gellak n° 119 Sunbleached. Use the contrasting colour Gellak n° 151 for the colour block in the middle. Cure again. Next, draw some fine horizontal and vertical lines with Gellak colours n° 119 Sunbleached, n° 151 Folksy Frock, n° 148 Highlands Heritage en n° 93 Trip To Heaven. Cure again. Apply your favoriete gloss and let it cure one more time. Finally use the Soft Finisher file to create a matt woolly effect.

... THE UNIVERSAL PRIMER MUST BE COMPLETELY DRY BEFORE YOU CAN APPLY YOUR BASE GEL? Each primer should be used with moderation and without touching the cuticles. If you used too much Universal Primer, make sure to wait until it has fully dried before you apply your base gel. If you don’t, your base gel layer will become diluted and will pull back from the cuticle for 1 or 2 mm during curing. This will cause premature lifting.
