Cats in Translation: What your cat is REALLY trying to tell you! Do you wish you could talk to your pets? Find out what they are really thinking? Me too! It would make my job a whole lot easier, that’s for sure. Not all pets wear their emotions on their sleeves, especially our furry feline friends. They are experts at being aloof, hiding their thoughts, feelings, and even their pain or sickness as they get older. Sometimes it can feel like cats speak a different language. That’s where we as veterinary professionals come in – we are here to help you decipher what is going on between those cute little ears of theirs.

Here are some common things we hear from cat parents in our exam rooms. These may be messages that we are misinterpreting from our kitties: 1. “My cat is peeing outside the litter box! He must be mad at me for something!” What your cat is trying to tell you: I feel uncomfortable in there! Beyond trying out different types of litter, litter box styles or locations of boxes, some further medical issues may be causing your cat to soil the house. Things like urinary tract infections, urinary stones (bladder OR kidney) or conditions that cause your pet to urinate more volume or more frequently could be causing an increased urgency to

urinate or reluctance to use the litter box as they normally would. Arthritis due to old age can cause difficulty climbing into their litter box if it has high sides. Cats are also very sensitive to negative experiences – for example, a urinary tract infection causes pain and discomfort when urinating. Even though that infection was treated or resolved, Meowzers may still remember that painful experience, and choose to do his business elsewhere that didn’t hurt last time. Giving our cats the benefit of the doubt, and ruling out medical causes of house soiling, should ALWAYS be our first step – we can work through this process together. 2. “My cat is pretty anti-social – she prefers to be on her own and hide under the bed most of the time” What your cat is trying to tell you: I’m stressed out!! Cats, if you haven’t already noticed, can be drama queens. They are extremely perceptive of, and sensitive to, the world around them. To feel safe and comfortable, they want to live in a stable, predictable environment where they can carry out their daily routine. When something disrupts their normal daily rhythm, they can become quite stressed. And stress, just like in people, can predispose your Meow Meow to health conditions or behavioural problems. Every individual cat is different though - some are very prone to stress, and others can be more go-with-the-flow. A cat will get upset by things we normally wouldn’t think twice about. Small things like rearranging household furniture, having company over, using different laundry soap on their cat blanket, or changing food or litter type can really throw a kitty off their game. Think of the big changes in life – moving to a new house, getting a new puppy, or having a baby! Imagine the unpredictability of those situations! How is Whiskers going to feel in this new environment? The truth is, life is going to change whether our kitten wants it to or not. But we can do things to help make the transition a good experience. Given enough time and space, or maybe some calming food or supplements, maybe even some calming medications, our stress kitties can successfully adapt to change. Talk to your vet about ways to gradually ease into changes around the house and make the transition successful for every family member. 3. “Oh, he’s always been a puker, it’s normal for him” What your cat is trying to tell you: Something doesn’t agree with my tummy! Regular vomiting is never “normal” for cats. Longhaired cats can struggle with hairballs due to grooming and can benefit from hairball supportive diets and supplements. Dietary intolerances or food allergies (yes – cats get them too!) can cause gastrointestinal signs like vomiting and diarrhea. Trying a hypoallergenic diet may reduce vomiting or eliminate it completely! Regurgitation is when the food that is thrown up looks like it has not been digested. This could indicate that the kitty is eating too much, too fast, or

has difficulties with food passing from the esophagus to the stomach. We can often change meal feeding amounts or frequency, or adding more moisture to the food to help reduce the occurrence of regurgitation. 4. “Yeah I guess she’s lost a little weight over the years, but she still has a great appetite and eats well” What your cat is trying to tell you: Something is stealing all my energy! Medical conditions such as heavy parasite burdens, inflammatory bowel disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes and cancer can cause weight loss despite your kitty maintaining a good (sometimes even ravenous) appetite. Regular vet visits for your kitty are important so we can monitor any changes in their weight over time that you may not notice at home day-to-day. A thorough physical exam, blood work and even urine tests may be necessary to help diagnose these conditions promptly, and get Mittens on the road to recovery and a healthy amount of weight gain. 5. “My kitty is getting older, and slowing down a bit, maybe not eating as much, but he’s still purring – so that’s a good sign, right?” What your cat is trying to tell you: I am trying to comfort myself. While purring is commonly known to be a sign of contentment and happiness, new research is showing that purring can also be a sign of self-soothing. When older kitties are experiencing pain or illness, they purr as a way to comfort themselves. Knowing when your aging kitty may have a declining quality of life can be difficult, especially since they are masters at hiding their illness. Signs may include decreased activity (not wanting to jump on furniture or use stairs), weight loss, reduced appetite, chronic vomiting, hiding, or having issues using the litter box. Having an open dialogue with your veterinarian can help to determine the quality of life your kitty is experiencing. We can help you through steps to manage medical conditions, or guide you through the end-oflife decision making process. Veterinary professionals only have your kitty’s best interests at heart, and want them to live long, happy, healthy lives with their human family. We are here to help translate the cat language and help you understand your kitty better. That’s why annual exams are so important – it gives you the opportunity to ask questions, and it gives us the opportunity to diagnose certain health conditions in a timely manner. It also helps us inform you of the ways we can prevent or monitor for certain common conditions that felines can develop as they age. That’s it. I use the biggest pot I can find and of course make as much as the pot can safety hold. It does not take long to boil and then I turn mine right down to just a simmer while you are getting all the jars stuffed. Realistically it is easier to get all your jars ready first then make the brine. Remember you must sterilize the jars before you stuff them. I put them into the dishwasher and run a short HOT cycle to do this otherwise you can boil them in a canning pot. Take off the lids and rims and throw them into a pot of hot water and simmer (leave them in there until you are ready to use them). Now, to stuff the quart-sized jars once they are sanitized, I put 2 garlic cloves cut in half and 5 or 6 sprigs and one flowering dill head into the jars. Then stuff as many peeled quartered carrots you can fit. Make sure you cut them so they are at least ½ inch below the top of the jar or the lid will not fit properly. Same if you are pickling beans at the same time or you can make a mixture of both in the same jar.

Once your whole table and counter is full of stuffed jars (at least mine was) you pour the boiling brine into each jar stopping ½ inch from the top. Using a lid and ring out of your pot where they have been simmering, put on jar and close, turning as tight as you can. Turn upside-down on a towel on the counter. To add the brine to the jars, I use a 4 Cup glass measuring cup to pour—makes it easier that way.

LET’S GET PICKLED I had my son call me the other day and say the most surprizing thing to me, “Mom can we make some pickled carrots and beans this year like we use to”? He loves my pickled carrots and beans and we all know pickling is a lot of work. The one year there were 6 of us working away in the kitchen, peeling carrots and fresh garlic, cutting ends off the beans, slicing, making brine, separating dill and stuffing jars. It was a ton of FUN and at the end we had at least 4 dozen quart jars of pickled carrots and beans. This is the time of year to get pickling with all the fresh carrots and beans out there. So, we are going to pick a Sunday and do it all again. Now, let me tell you there are a ton of variations of pickling brine and you can add a lot of different ingredients to your brine besides pickling spice and salt. I normally stick to the original old German recipe my mother and grandmother used and find that you can add different flavours to the jars instead of the brine. Things like jalapeno peppers, fresh garlic of course, dried chile or serrano pepper it you like a little heat. Won’t take long and as the jars are sealing you will hear the joyful sound of the jars popping, then you know they are sealed!! I let them cool on the counter overnight just to be sure they all have sealed properly. They are ready to eat in 2 – 3 weeks, but I know for a fact that my son got into them sooner than that. Sounds easy, right? Well, actually it really is if you have a lot of hands helping. It is a really FUN event for a Sunday afternoon and a couple bottles of wine add to the fun. Seriously, do this and the great thing is you actually have something beautiful to show for all your hard work. Forgot to mention you can use this brine for just about everything you feel like pickling like Zucchini, onions, peppers, beets, radishes, asparagus, cauliflower and jalapenos. Just use your imagination. AND, did you know that pickle juice is actually good for you? Athletes have been drinking pickle juice to relieve muscle cramps after exercising and pickle juice could lower blood sugar spikes in healthy adults. AND, pickle juice has a variety of antioxidants, including vitamin C and E. AND, your digestive system benefits from it. The juice contains vinegar, which is fermented, and good for your gut. Peroxide, who knew? This was written by Becky Ransey of Indiana (a doctor’s wife), and I want to share it with you. She was over recently for coffee and smelled the bleach I was using to clean my toilet and countertops. This is what she told me... I would like to tell you of the benefits of that plain little ole bottle of 3% peroxide you can get for under $1.00 at any drug store. What does bleach cost? My husband has been in the medical field for over 36 years, and most doctors don’t tell you about peroxide. Have you ever smelled bleach in a doctor’s office? NO!!! Why? Because it smells, and it is not healthy! Ask the nurses who work in the doctor’s offices and ask them if they use bleach at home. They are wiser and know better! Did you also know bleach was invented in the late 40's? It's chlorine, folks! And it was used to kill our troops. Peroxide was invented during WWI in the 20's. It was used to save and help cleanse the needs of our troops and hospitals. Please think about this. 1. Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and hold in your mouth for 10 minutes daily, then spit it out. (I do it when I bathe.) No more canker sores, and your teeth will be whiter without expensive pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash. 2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of germs. 3. Clean your counters and tabletops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your

dishrag when you wipe or spray it on the counters. 4. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria. 5. I had fungus on my feet for years until I sprayed a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water on them (especially the toes) every night and let dry. 6. Soak any infections or cuts in 3% peroxide for five to ten minutes several times a day. My husband has seen gangrene that would not heal with any medicine but was healed by soaking in peroxide. 7. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will. 8. Tilt your head back and spray into nostrils with your 50/50 mixture whenever you have a cold, plugged sinus. It will bubble and help to kill the bacteria. Hold for a few minutes, and then blow your nose into a tissue. 9. If you have a terrible toothache and cannot get to a dentist right away, put a capful of 3% peroxide into your mouth and hold it for ten minutes several times a day. The pain will lessen greatly. 10. And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through You will not have the peroxide-burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, faddish, or dirty blonde. In the making of this essay, I used musicals produced during the Second World War to aid in my research. Indeed, movies often suggest more about the time in which they were made than the time in which it was set, so I have provided movies at the bottom of each section that I feel are an apt representation of the time in which these chapters speak of. The iconic “We Can Do It” poster, created by J Howard Miller, has left the impression that the Second World War was the turning point in women’s struggle for economic equality. Indeed, World War II marked a metamorphose of the American workforce as one of the largest shifts in the number of women entering traditionally male-dominated spheres of employment. “During the Second World War, male-dominated workforces in the US were vacuumed in order to send men to the European and South Pacific warfronts. Women were ultimately left to fulfill the positions left vacant by overseas servicemen, and answering the call to action presented by propaganda, waves of women exited the domestic sphere. Approximately 6.7 million women entered the workforce, and 3 million of these women with a “[we]’ll build them, you’ll fly them” attitude, entered previously male-dominated manufacturing jobs between 1940 and 1944. Viewing the war as a shared effort, women served dutifully in their newfound economic roles simultaneously aiding men on the frontlines and proving to employers that women were equally capable. The aforementioned “We Can Do It” poster featuring Rosie the Riveter has since become an iconic image of woman-power during the Second World War; however, the poster also engenders an illusion of gender equity, misleading a contemporary audience engaged in a love affair with the “empowering legend” of Rosie the Riveter. Indeed, innumerable women had entered male-dominated roles and industries throughout the war, but they were not immune to workplace misogyny or subtle objectification by female-centric propaganda campaigns. In the vein of workplace chauvinism, women’s work was almost never compensated equally to male counterparts, making it abundantly clear that enthusiastic attempts to bring more women into the workforce were vain efforts, not legitimate attempts to create gender parity in the workforce. When World War II concluded and thousands of troops returned, women were expected to vacate the positions they had filled in order to create space for returning veterans who would soon be financially relied upon by their wives and children. As quickly as women entered the workforce, so too would they depart. Between 1945 and 1946, the total number of women employed outside the domestic sphere massively declined, nearly returning aggregate female labour force participation (FLFP) to prewar levels. yond the confines of social and domesticated capacities, women were far from immune to workplace disadvantage and hostilities in the post-war era. Indeed, even Rosie the Riveter, as a symbol of woman-power and equality, has come to be criticized. Paddy Quick, a revisionist writer with sardonic disapproval of Rosie the Riveter as a legendary symbol of female empowerment, wrote the following: Once upon a time, the government appealed to women … and since Rosie was very patriotic, she left her home and took a job as a riveter. At first, Rosie was afraid that she wouldn't be able to do the work because it was ‘men’s work,’ and she was also afraid that people would think she was unfeminine. Fortunately, the work turned out to be quite easy, and she found that she could be sexy even in work clothes. So, despite the war, she was very happy. Musicals did not fail to perpetuate these constructs of a woman’s purpose, and Hers to Hold proved to be an apt representation of these norms, while taking part in their perpetuation, too. Deanna Durbin, in this 1943 musical, plays a wealthy young woman named, Penny Craig. Though much of the plot line chronicles Penny’s work in factories as a Rosie the Riveter ‘type,’ it is revealed that her motivation to enter the manufacturing industry was not to make a meaningful contribution to the war effort, nor was it a demonstration of female strength or faculties; Penny wanted to be near the man she had fallen in love with. In spite of the fact that millions of working women had proven they possessed the capacity to complete laborious ‘men’s work,’ the importance of femininity and beauty, as well as the pressure for women to marry, overshadowed the socalled burgeoning cohort of trailblazing women wishing to work outside of the domestic sphere. Rather than an overwhelming acknowledgment of women’s admirable work ethic and determination in the face of a world war, women were championed for managing to “remain attractive and womanly while on the assembly line,” a sign that in spite of women’s efforts to be perceived as equals, patriarchal constructs of womanhood had yet to be extinguished. ________________________________________ Movie to Complement this Section: - Hers to Hold (1943)

Ways to Instill Your Values in Your Teen Although in most cases you are a parent to your child from the time your child is a newborn, the teens years are where your child’s values are cemented into them and become a part of them that will continue into their future. There is a lot you can do during the teenage years to encourage your child to hold fast to the values you have brought them up with to this point. Here are a few ideas to encourage this.

Continue to Build a Close Relationship between You and Your Child One of the most important things you can do for your child is to maintain a close relationship with them through these crucial years. Be the listening ear your teenager needs, and be their friend as well as their parent. Spend quality time with them and consider them when making decisions.

Practice What You Preach

No child responds well to a hypocrite. If you are living one way and telling your child to live another, they will learn from your example rather than your words. If you tell your child to obey the law, but text while driving and consistently drive over the speed limit, your child will see through you and learn to disobey the law just as you do.

Don’t Be Pushy

It is a difficult position to be in when you desperately want your child to inherit your values, while trying not to be pushy about it. When you force your thoughts and beliefs on children, they will most often rebel against them and walk away to choose their own path. Share your values with your teen, but let them choose their own direction.

In overcoming anxiety, there are many different techniques one can use; I will only briefly mention a few of the common ones. The main goal of any technique is simple: to break the cycle of anxiety. One of the most common techniques is mindfulness, this can be accomplished through breathing exercises, meditation, or a full body scan. The main goal of mindfulness is to bring your attention to the present moment, to break the rumination on past events or worrying about what the future will bring. These techniques often require 15 minutes or more to be of full effect.

Anxiety As I look in the mirror, my heart starts to race thinking about the presentation I have to give at work. I’m used to my heart racing, trying to juggle the family and work, but this time it is worse. This time, I feel like I cannot breathe. I take a few minutes to try and compose myself while listening to my kids outside the door asking for breakfast. I open the door and go about our morning routine. As I’m making breakfast, I am trying so hard to not focus on the presentation, but it keeps coming into my mind, the questions are swirling: Did I put enough information down? Am I dressed appropriately? What if I get a question I can not answer? What if I’m late? I feel so rushed to get the kids off to school and as I prepare to leave for work my mind is still spinning with questions, my body hurts, I am so tense. I try to convince myself it is all because of the presentation, but reality is, lately I almost always feel like t his. Does this story sound familiar? Many people live silently with anxiety, that at times, can feel so overpowering it takes all their strength to get through the day. Anxiety can come in many forms and arise for many different reasons. There are many different causes and types of anxiety including separation, health, performance, catastrophic thinking, social and many others. It can present as physical symptoms; dry mouth, stomach pains, headaches, stiff neck/shoulders or back, racing heart, lack of appetite, shortness of breath. Or it can pres-

Another technique that is especially useful when thoughts are focused on the past and decisions made, is journaling. The goal of journaling is to get the thoughts down on paper, physically write them down to help stop the thoughts. Journaling can take many forms in the way it is written or the style from simply writing down the anxieties to comparing options. Often with journaling, I hear ‘but I’m worried someone will read it’; my encouragement with this fear is that once you are done writing, destroy the paper. The point is not always to have the physical copy to reread, rather the therapy is writing it down. What about the times when anxiety hits and we do not have 20 minutes to focus on alleviating it? There are techniques that can be done quickly and in between daily tasks. Two of the most common are the ‘stop technique’ and distraction. The stop technique involves imagining a big red stop sign, or physically saying the word ‘STOP’ when anxious thoughts start, the important piece is to not give judgement to the thought or how long you took before remembering to say stop. The second technique, distraction, involves finding simple things to focus on, for example finding 3 things in the room that share a colour, shape, letter, etc. and touching them or saying them in your mind, then 2, then 1. Anxiety is individual in how it presents. It is important to remember the tools needed to overcome and cope with anxiety will be just as unique. For treatment there is no one size fits all, and often it is a process of trial and error to determine what works best for yourself. The point to remember is that it is a process. Step Away From The Glue Gun Recently, one of my friends posted a photo of a quilt she had just completed. It was a stunning-

ly beautiful work with intricate patterns and stitches and I was inspired. Somehow, that quilt had given me a need to create something beautiful with my own two hands. I had caught the craft bug. Here’s the issue though; I am not crafty. The crafting bug, when I do catch it, tends to last a few days with symptoms such as multiple papercuts, small puncture wounds, burns and an assortment of multi-colour pox-like marks on any exposed skin occurring. It usually results in the destruction of any crafting supplies, clothing and/or furniture that was in the vicinity of the crafting event.

You see, in my hands, a glue gun becomes a weapon of craft destruction. Now, it has been said that when it comes to crafts, there are no mistakes; just unique creations. I do have the ability to create unique things. Ever been to an art gallery where you weren’t sure if the painting was hung the right way up? Somehow I imagine that is what my folks must have thought every time I brought home a craft from Brownies or school. It’s not that I am completely without talent. I do have the ability to take a great photo and when I draw a horse, it tends to look like a four legged creature of the Order Mammalia. It’s just anything that requires glue, glitter, or googly eyes tends to result in a glob of gelatinous goop. Honestly, my efforts could drive Martha Stewart to a life of crime - again. Bob Ross’ hair would be scared straight if he could but see my attempts at paper mâché. Etsy would flick the switch and turn off their site if I had the audacity to try and sell my wares. And you know what? I – Don’t – Care. I think I would not appreciate the efforts of others, those amazing individuals that have the ability to turn scraps of cloth and string into works of art. Those who have the vision to look at something another would toss in the rubbish bin and to take it and remold it into something beautiful. I am most impressed by these individuals. I can only hope that perhaps one of them will take a peek in my rubbish bin, the resting place of my crafting efforts, and will catch the crafting bug and turn my glob of glitter into gold. Are Vitamins Necessary? To do or not to do – that is the question. As I get older I wonder, do I need to take vitamins? I read an article the other day that said if you eat a well-balanced diet you probably don’t need to take vitamins. Well, that answers my question. I definitely need to take vitamins as I am the absolute worst at eating properly. I don’t mean I eat junk food, no, not at all never, because I am allergic to most processed foods as they all contain preservatives which my body does not tolerate. What I mean is, I skip breakfast and for lunch it is just something quick so the only proper meal I eat is supper because I am making it for my husband. I rarely eat fruit and will have broccoli if I am making a vegetable for dinner. Sometimes I’ll have carrots or green beans but never eat a vegetable everyday. I am sure I do not get enough protein and I am not sure how much protein I even should have in a day? For sure I should be taking a multi-vitamin! That or start juicing again. For years I juiced and then one day I stopped, not sure why, I think I was just getting tired of it. Maybe I should start again? Anyhow, if you don’t juice or eat properly, I’m thinking you should be taking a multi-vitamin. Here’s the first thing to know when you’re shopping for the best multivitamin for you: Read the full label. Be skeptical—very, very skeptical—about over-inflated claims. If your multivitamin contains more than the daily recommended value for any given vitamin, it can actually do more harm than good. Avoid: artificial colors, titanium dioxide (linked to inflammation, kidney damage, and possibly cancer in animal studies), and carrageenan (also linked to inflammation). And, of course, if you have an allergy—to wheat, say—make sure to check that your vitamins are free from the allergen. Look for a multivitamin that contains vitamin D, magnesium, calcium, zinc, and (for women's multivitamins) iron. Seek out established brands, the ones you consistently spot on pharmacy shelves as opposed to newto-you options. A standard multivitamin usually contains: Water-soluble vitamins. These vitamins pass in and out of the body easily. Most do not build up in the body's cells. Water-soluble vitamins include vitamin C and the B vitamins: thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, B6, biotin, folic acid, and B12. Fat-soluble vitamins. These vitamins are stored in the body's cells and do not pass out of the body as easily as water-soluble vitamins do. Fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, E, and K. Minerals. These include calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and zinc. Some multivitamins also contain other ingredients that aren't vitamins or minerals. These include substances such as the antioxidants lutein and lycopene. Types of specialized supplements include: Women's formulas. Women's supplements have extra iron. These are made for older adults and usually have less iron and vitamin K and more vitamin B12 and vitamin D. Prenatal formulas. These are made for women who are pregnant, are planning to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding. The supplements have extra folic acid and iron. Folic acid is especially important because it can help prevent certain birth defects, especially neural tube defects. Sometimes these supplements also have more calcium. If the supplement has a Natural Product Number (NPN) or a Homeopathic Medicine Number (DIN-HM), the supplement meets Health Canada's standards for safety, quality, and health claims. A generic brand (or store brand) often works just as well as a name-brand supplement. Look for generic brands that contain the same number of vitamins and minerals as the name brand. The surprize of the day is that most man-made (synthetic) vitamins are as good as natural vitamins. That I did not know. Now we all know that the best way to get the vitamins and minerals you need is by eating a wide variety of foods including vegetables, fruit, whole grains, milk and alternatives, and protein foods such as legumes, nuts and seeds, fish and lean meats. Be beautiful.” ― Caterina Fake With Halloween around the corner, big round orange pumpkins are being carved with scary faces and both children and adults are counting down the days until they can dress up in their costumes and enjoy the many decorations designed to delightfully frighten those celebrating Halloween. Although some thrill seekers love the adrenalin rush of being scared, for most people, this time of year is intended to be fun. Fear is not always fun, but it is a natural emotion. We all have things we are afraid of but almost all of those fears have been learned. Studies have shown that we only have two innate fears at birth: the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. These innate fears are designed to keep us safe in dangerous situations. The rest of our fears have developed over our lifetime and are influenced by our environment, culture and observations. Most of these are natural fears because they are fairly common amongst human beings and we may not have ever encountered the thing we are afraid of. This includes spiders, snakes, mice, bats, death, airplanes and the boogie-man in the closet.

Other fears develop out of our experiences such as being bitten by an animal, someone making fun of us when we spoke in front of the class or being told repeatedly that goblins live under bridges. Some fears are so extreme that they are classified as phobias because they cause significant distress, anxiety, can be irrational and often interfere with our daily living. Many fears can be overcome by exposing ourselves to the thing we fear, sometimes repeatedly. Our courage comes from facing our fear. When we allow ourselves to dare to be fearless, we find courage. As Henry Ford said, “One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn’t do.” At the start of each year, I choose one thing that I am afraid of and my goal is to be past the fear by December 31. I was afraid of horses so I worked my way up to getting on a horse and rode one… not far, but I rode. I was afraid of looking foolish so I took an improv class and performed in front of strangers. I was afraid to be loved so I found the courage to be vulnerable. I was afraid to look stupid and so I led a workshop with less than an hour of preparation and it was one of the best workshops I ever did! Some fears are not as easy to identify. We may be afraid of failing or afraid of success. We may be afraid of not belonging or of not being in control. We may fear being alone or of doing something wrong. These fears can develop over time or can suddenly become a part of our character after a specific experience. Every month at Women Talk in Strathmore, women tell their stories of being daring. Being bold. Taking a chance to achieve a goal. Courageously overcoming a challenge. Last month, we heard how one daring woman tricked herself into riding in a hot balloon by taking along her camera and a commitment to take photos from the air. Another told of her daring goal to become one of the best storytellers in Canada. We heard how living life from a place of abundance rather than scarcity takes courage. One woman experienced her own death while on holidays and after surviving, she dared herself to listen to her heart and make her dreams a reality. Another spoke of her emotionally and physically painful childhood after being burned on 75% of her body and daring to follow her passion even when people around her said she would fail. Why Should Kids Get Allowances - The Top 7 Reasons The question of whether allowances are right or wrong, is one that has been argued for many generations. Now it’s your turn, as a parent, to decide whether or not an allowance is the best way to educate your child about financial responsibility. There are many reasons given on why a regular payment of money to a child should or shouldn’t be done – ultimately I believe there is no right answer, it is up to each individual family to decide what is the best option for them. Through many years of working with parents and educators, these are the top seven reasons I keep hearing on the question of why should kids get allowances. 1. They learn to be wise with how they spend their money. It may help to teach them how to prioritise their spending, & learn from an early age what things are a waste of money. 2. They learn how to save money. Having a regular amount of money, may make it easier for them to establish good saving habits, as a certain percentage of the money from each payment can be placed into a savings account/ piggy bank. Without an allowance, any money they receive, may simply be spent, with nothing going to savings. 3. They learn how to donate their money. A certain percentage of their money can also be allocated to donations to the needy, hopefully encouraging your child to be more thoughtful of others, & not greedy with their money. 4. They will learn how to budget their money so it lasts between payments. Eventually, most children will learn to be careful how they spend what limited money they have, so they don’t run out of money. This will only happen, if the parent doesn’t give in to the initial whining for more money when the mistake is first made! 5. They can learn to make mistakes with small amounts of money. Kids will learn how to manage their finances responsibly far quicker through being allowed to make mistakes themselves (and suffering the consequences), rather than being told how they should be managing their money by someone else. Parents need to be there to guide their children on

how they should spend their money, but not dictate (unless there could be serious consequences from their mistakes). 6. They may stop nagging you for money. The idea is, if they are receiving a regular amount of money, and they have a good understanding of how to budget it then they will never run out of money, so won’t keep pestering you for more. Realistically, it will probably never put a complete end to the nagging for money, but it should reduce it. 7. You may end up forking out less money. If you sit down, and add up how much money you give your child during the week & how much you spend on items for them (e.g. clothing), it may actually work out cheaper to give them an allowance, and make them responsible for a lot of their purchases. As I mentioned earlier, an allowance isn’t necessarily the best option for every family, but these are some of the reasons why many parents & educators believe an allowance is the only way to go. Some families though, may not have enough room in the family budget to provide their children with a regular payment, or may simply not believe in it for their own personal reasons. Either way you choose, I have seen with my own eyes, children from each side of the fence who have grown up to be exceptional money managers, and likewise children who seem to have no idea. Ultimately, it comes down to how much guidance a child receives from their parents/guardians on money – whether through an allowance or not.

The look of anguish in a child’s face when they discover they have been separated from their parent is unmistakable. The panic and fear in a parent when they cannot locate their child in a crowd is indescribable. Strategies for lost children are age specific. If your child is young and a ‘wanderer,’ consider a body harness, or wristto-wrist tether.

Note to the General Public…NEVER, EVER have a frightened child come with you to a different location,

even if you intend to bring them to customer service or security. If you discover a lost child, wait with them in the exact location you have found them. Reassure that child that their parent would never leave them, and they are to stay in that one spot, and their parent will return for them. Stay with that child in that place and call for help to arrive. If the child knows the parents phone number, call it for them. Or if you feel a significant amount of time has lapsed, call security or the police. Stay with that child until the situation is resolved. • Talk to your child about getting lost – have that frank and real conversation. Help them to know how frightening it is, and then help them to know what to do so they can be found quickly. Practice the strategies listed below with your child. Its part of their personal safety plan, which requires rehearsal and discussion to be effective. • Dress your child in bright clothing – its easier to spot a neon green shirt than it is a navy one.

• Make sure your child knows your full name and phone number, and their full name. If need be, pin this information inside their jacket or a pocket. • Teach your child to stay close to you and to keep their hand in your pocket. With their hand in your pocket, you are aware of their touch and it gives them a tangible item to focus on. This way, you have both your hands free if you need to carry or pick up something (including a younger child). Talk about being ‘stuck like glue’. • If your child is older, talk about having a meeting place if you get separated. This should be a place that can be easily spotted from their vantage point. A clock tower, or a set of stairs that is visual from their height through a crowd works well.

• If your child does get lost, instruct them to stop and stand firm in the spot the are in and shout in their very loudest voice “Mom, (Dad, Grandma, etc.) I am here”. The child should keep calling this phrase

until you or another adult comes to them. A key factor in this strategy is to practice, practice, practice. Role play scenarios of being lost and have your child call out to you, and you respond immediately.

• Teach your child about SafeStrangers: typically, a person with kids. If your child needs help, remind them to look for someone pushing a stroller. • Teach your child to never go to a different location with someone they don’t know. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

While more studies of gut bacteria and weight loss need to be conducted, research has shown that obese people have more of a certain type of bacteria called Firmicutes and less of another type called Bacteroidetes in their digestive tracts. The higher proportion of Firmicutes is believed to lead to a higher number of calories extracted from food. Therefore, a higher ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteriodetes has become one of the markers of obesity.Bone broth is a good source of L-glutamine, an essential amino acid (the building block of protein) necessary for the body and gut health. L-glutamine was found in studies to reduce the Firmicutes in the gut and, therefore, aid in weight loss. Many studies have also looked at whether consuming soup before a meal promoted weight loss due to a lower number of calories eaten during the meal itself. You’ll need: • 2 unpeeled carrots, scrubbed and roughly chopped • 2 stalks celery, including leafy part, roughly chopped • 1 medium onion, roughly chopped • 7 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed • 3½ pounds grass-fed beef bones (preferably joints and knuckles) • 2 dried bay leaves • 2 teaspoons kosher salt • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar Directions: Place all the vegetables and the garlic, bones, and bay leaves into a large pot on the stove or in a slow cooker. Sprinkle on the salt, drizzle with vinegar, and add enough water to cover everything by 1 inch (about 13 cups). Cook for 12 to 24 hours on low. Use a shallow spoon to carefully skim the film off the top of the broth. Pour the broth through a fine strainer and discard the solids. Taste the broth and add more salt as needed. The broth will keep for 3 days in the fridge and 3 months in your freezer. Hack: adding dried mushrooms or using 2 tablespoons fish sauce in place of salt (add it in Step 1) dramatically boosts the flavor of the broth. So, there you have it. I already made mine a few days ago and I sip on it at night before I go to bed. It makes me feel all warm and healthy because I know for sure it is!! I made a big batch of it and canned a bunch that way I can freeze it and then just pull it out once I have finished a jar and always have it on hand. Just do it for your health!

Hello, Winter! Wow! As I write this, I wonder what happened to summer? Harvest was in full swing last week and as I passed many combines in the fields, my thoughts were with our wonderful farmers. I hope you were able to get the crops off. This is shaping up to be a repeat of last year, with snow in September and is just adding to the difficulties our agriculture industry has faced this year with trade disputes, excessive moisture to the north and drought to the south. Farm receipts, good or bad, have a ripple effect throughout our entire economy. We will be holding our Alberta Advantage Immigration Strategy Consultations on October 3 in Langdon at the Firehouse Grill. We have so many platform commitments to honour, and it is imperative that we accomplish as much as possible this session. We have

In the first 100 days, we able to implement or start on 68 platform commitments. One of those is to young Albertans looking to get jobs in skilled trades. We have created some new scholarships to attract more high school students into the trades sector and into the labour market. Building the skills of students in the trades will lead to successful careers. In the face of high unemployment amongst our youth, it is important to realize that apprenticing and embarking on a career in the trades has the same value and merit as a university degree. Much of our skilled labour force is reaching retirement age, and we have the worst youth unemployment in decades. We will need many new skilled workers to fulfill the demand in our province, and what a great opportunity for our youth. These are great paying jobs, so let’s inspire the next generation of skilled workers! I write to you not as a legislator or minister but as a mother with deep sadness over the loss of 2 young men, one to opioids and the other to a car crash. We also have 2 other young men in the hospital due to drug overdoses at a house party. I wish I had some wisdom to offer, some words to help with the pain, but I just have tears and my deepest condolences for those who have lost their precious babies. To the families, we are with you, and you are in our thoughts and prayers. Our communities rally around our families and these families will need all of us in the upcoming weeks and months as they come to terms with the trauma that they have endured. Please hug your children close to you, talk to them about their lives, and we as their village must always be there to help our families in times of need. As always, we love to hear from you.

1. What attributes and/or experience makes you a great candidate for Bow River?

“One of the things about being a principal, you do a lot of networking. I had experience with doing networking to a broader extent when I became mayor... and I believe that that’s something I’ve worked at and established over years.”

2. What is one personal achievement of yours in the past four years in office?

“The first part is, there’s 60 different communities in the riding so to be out to events... to see what people do in those communities. The second part was... I was able, as a backbencher in

Trudeau, aside from their respective political parties?

“Andrew Scheer is a middle class Canadian... When he’s home in the morning, he has a minivan, he loads his five children in the minivan, and he drives them to school... He understands what families struggle with. For example, every year the Prime Minister and the leader of the Opposition host media at their homes... It was interesting because one of the newspaper people writing said, ‘I’ve never seen, in all the years I’ve done this–’ and this person had a long history of going to these things– ‘a house where in the bathroom there was bathtub toys, in the hallways there was some kid’s shoes that weren’t put away, there was a coat on the floor somewhere.’ He said it looked like a family lived in this house. It wasn’t perfect, and he said that’s so unusual, but that’s Andrew Scheer and his wife, Jill: they are super middle-class Canadians with super strong middle-class values.”

6. Relations between our provincial government and Parliament Hill are strained, and prairie separatism rhetoric seems to be making a comeback. How do you fit in this picture?

“There is a relationship that goes on between the federal and provincial conservatives... so there’s that constant communication. Within our own ridings, I think there’s six MLAs that touch this riding and I stay in contact with them, they stay in contact with me. We are often at the same events so there’s a lot of communication and cooperation between the federal and provincial conservative parties... 7. Briefly discuss the Conservative party’s stance on immigration.

“This country, as everyone knows, was founded on immigration... so what we believe is that immigration should be done the right way. It should be done for the right reasons. Illegal immigration is wrong. Crossing the border illegally is wrong... People need to come in an orderly fashion under the plans that fit what we need to do in this country... We have always had a certain percentage of refugees but, again, it has to be done in an orderly, proper fashion.”

8. What are three main issues you will focus on if you get re-elected? - “We need to get oil to market... We believe that ethical, and the best environmentally produced oil comes from Western Canada and it should be used rather than importing oil from countries that are not nearly as environmentally (focused) and [ethical]. It’s a great resource... We will get pipelines built.” - “Agriculture, as I talked about, and invasive species. We are facing a significant economic challenge with zebra mussels that we need to pay more attention to... The Alberta government alone is looking at a 100-million-dollar cost just to deal with it. Those are huge numbers on an ongoing basis and what it could do to (damage) our irrigation.” - “The Carbon Tax has got to go. That’s not an environmental plan; that’s a taxing plan.”

9. How can constituents get involved with your campaign?

“Connect through our website, www.votemartinshields.com. We have campaign offices in Brooks and in Strathmore that are open in the afternoons. Phone us, connect on our website, come on in, and we have volunteers who would gladly have you as a volunteer... We’ve got a whole list of things to do and we’re glad to have people come.”

10. Final comment to voters in the constituency.

“The privilege and right to vote should never be taken lightly. I have had people say, ‘what does it matter? One vote doesn’t matter.’ All votes matter. If the population begins to think votes don’t matter, we end up in a very, very bad place. Use your privilege and right to vote.”

People instantly think Constant Contact and while they do offer a lot including good support, they charge. Some newbies also find them overwhelming, as there is a learning curve to become familiar with a lot of features. I recommend starting with a free service; this will provide you with an opportunity to get used to everything and experiment a bit. I often use Mail Chimp for my clients. It is free up to 2,000 contacts and gives me the selection of templates I need to send out a profession looking newsletter. You can also monitor results as in unsubscribes, bounces, open and click rates. Once the template is set-up with logos, branding colours and a content-friendly design, all you need to do is pop in fresh copy and visuals for each newsletter campaign. AWeber.com has been gaining a following. It has a large selection of templates and customers often find it easier than MailChimp. It offers a 30-day free trial and then $19/month for up to 500 subscribers. How often are you going to send out an email? Weekly is a bit time prohibitive unless you have a staff member who really does it well. Monthly or even seasonal is often enough. If you choose seasonal, even if, say, winter isn’t your busy time, send one out anyway. Provide relevant and helpful information to your subscribers and touch on what you will offer in the months to come. What goes into your newsletter? • Balance your content to be 90% educational and 10% promotional. • Get creative with email subject lines • End with one clear CTA (call to action) • Keep design and copy minimal. • Make it easy for people to unsubscribe • Encourage people to forward your newsletter • Make sure it is formatted for both desktop and mobile screens • Include recipient’s name ‘Hi ……….’ Before you hit ‘send to my list’, test it, test it, test it – make sure the copy has no errors, links work and it looks visually appealing but not crowded. Most importantly, it must be interesting, so you haven’t wasted the readers time, as this is a sure way to have them unsubscribe.
