Why Advertise In The NN Yes, print advertising is expensive. We get it. That’s why we at the Newsy Neighbour put our money where our mouth is. Did you know the Newsy Girls, Aleesha and Denise, own two other businesses?? Aleesha owns the Langdon Firehouse Bar and Grill and Denise owns Lil Hoots Consignment Boutique in Strathmore. Why? Because they believe in themselves and their knowledge of all things business, and they only advertise in the Newsy Neighbour to prove that advertising in the magazine works. And it does. Just this week, a group of women walked into Lil Hoots and proclaimed, “We saw you in the Nosey Neighbour! We didn’t even know you existed!” First, it still makes us giggle how many people, after 12 years in business, still think we’re called the Nosey Neighbour, and secondly, how not everyone has social media. You cannot rely solely on social media to better your business. It's just a fact: not everyone uses social media. Furthermore, not everybody follows you or knows how to do searches or knows how to find a website or knows to just Google ‘consignment stores in Strathmore’. People still enjoy reading an actual piece of paper. They still like going to their mailbox and finding a newspaper. They still enjoy tangible items. That's why People Magazine and the Strathmore Times – and the Newsy Neighbourr – are still in business. Anyway, this little interaction with this group of women made us realize how integral the magazine is still. We do our best to go above and beyond what is expected of us every single month. Because we know that print advertising is expensive, we know that your decision to advertise comes with a lot of planning and saving. We know that there are options everywhere for you to choose to advertise your business and every day there is a new company requesting your hard-earned advertising dollars. So, what do we do to set ourselves apart? We support those who support us. Every chance we get. Animal Care Center has advertised with us from the beginning. So, when our (many) pets need veterinary care, we only go to Animal Care Centre. When Denise and Aleesha needed Reiki to deal with some devastating experiences in their lives, they went to Enlightened Souls. When Denise was looking for new blinds for her home, she contacted Boutique Blinds. And when her parents needed new blinds for their window, she recommended them, and they provided the blinds for their home. When Denise's dog started exhibiting episodes of dementia, she got some oils from Endeavor More Living to help him lead a healthier life. Every Monday morning, Milestones Support comes in with their crew to help at Lil Hoots, putting clothes away and hang up clothes as volunteers and let me tell you, it is not only appreciated but really really appreciated LOL. Both Denise and Aleesha purchased their vehicles from Strathmore Motor Products, and they've also recommended all of their family members to buy Chevy or GMC’s from Strathmore Motors because of their continual support the magazine. When Denise's dishwasher broke, she called Volks Tech to come and repair it. The Newsy Neighbour used Sur-Lock storage for 2 years for their magazine drop off. Denise recently purchased her new tires from Kal Tire. Aleesha got her tires changed at Langdon Auto. We are constantly going to Value Drug Mart for beauty products, gifts, and the friendly hugs from staff. And the best place for our facials and pedicures is at Lakeshore Spa – we only trust Jody with our toes! Denise goes to Stylz Salon for her haircuts, and Denise, and her children go to Valley Dental for their Dental and othodontic needs. Her kids’ first dentist experience was at Strathmore Dental with Dr. Terry. They loved him! Denise's husband and Aleesha go

Denise uses Mulek Maintenance for her snow removal at Lil Hoots Consignment and, the Newsy Neighbour is part of all three chambers - the Chestermere Chamber, the Langdon Chamber, and the Strathmore Chamber and we support them in all things. Did you know that when Leela Aheer was going around all the towns canvassing for the election, they had so many people say that they read her article monthly in the magazine? And when they needed a place for their February 8th event, we recommended the Cheadle Hall and the Indus Rec Center. They went with the Cheadle Hall and we are excited to be there for that event. And Martin Shields continually supports us and gives us an earnest handshake every time he sees us and is always at our big events like our previous awards and festivals. There are so many other businesses listed in the magazine that we have not mentioned but when someone comments on social media asking for recommendations, we are always recommending our advertisers. When someone asks for a chiropractor, we recommend Langdon Chiropractic. When someone's looking for snow removal or tree removal, we recommend Professional Hole Diggers. When someone asks on social media for recommendations for insurance or for an accountant, we recommend the large variety of both businesses that we have like Coldwell Insurance, Cindy Chartrand, Transportation Taxation, and Wise and Company. We support you because you support us. Advertise with us, and see what sets us apart. ~ Denise Geremia facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

WHY YOU SHOULD SHARE YOUR LIFE STORY PUBLICLY Being vulnerable is not easy, but it can change people’s lives. Have you ever thought of sharing your life’s story, whether that’s simply through a YouTube video, an Instagram or Facebook post or by writing a book? Did this thought ever cross your mind before? Well, I guess it did or it will from now on and this is the reason this article found you. You are here to understand how valuable your life story, your experiences are for the world. Here are the top four reasons why you should start to share your story. There are many more reasons, maybe your personal ones. But those reasons will give you a new perspective on the importance and magnitude of your personal story in this world. I often hear, “Who would want to hear my struggles or successes or all the things that I experienced?” Believe me, there are a lot of people who would not only want to hear it but would benefit or learn from it. Be careful, reading this might stir up the urge to really carry your story out into the world, maybe in a way you never thought of before.

1. Digest what happened.

Sharing your story, in whatever way, is a great way to reflect on what happened. You take yourself the time to acknowledge everything that happened, how it made you feel, what you did, and the way this experience(s) influenced your present life. Sometimes, when we take the time to go through the things we experienced again, we explore it in a way we haven’t thought of thus far. We learn new lessons in the things that lay already in the past that will have a positive influence on our lives now, after all that time. Life can be fast and demanding. We fight through all the challenges that occur. But when do we really take the time to reflect on things? Maybe we sit down after overcoming a challenge and relax a bit. Maybe we talk to a friend about it. Maybe, after facing a challenge for several weeks, months or sometimes years, we believe that thinking it over for a few hours or talking about it with a friend is enough time. But some things need more time to digest in our emotional body. A wound doesn’t heal in a day, not in our physical body and also not in our emotional body.

When you publish your story in some way, in whatever way, you take the time to think things through again. You go through it all again and additionally, you look at them from another perspective because you want to share them with other people, which automatically changes the way you look at it. And this new perspective might open up a new learning from the situation. Something you didn’t see right after it happened. Something that you weren’t ready to fully understand. But now, with some time in between, it makes sense. Sharing your story with others, is an amazingly powerful way of healing yourself. It helps you to grasp the full meaning of something that happened in the past, something that you thought you had already completed in a way. Sharing your story can be your option of complete closure of an event happened even long time ago. They say that when we heal ourselves, we heal others as well. This is the next powerful reason for sharing your story with the world.

2. Inspire and support others.

Not only do you help and heal yourself, or simply find closure in the experience, but you will inspire and support others by sharing it. Imagine the last time you felt alone with a struggle in your life. Wouldn’t it have been amazing if you knew that there are other people out there, who have overcome this before? Or even better, they shared how they overcame it? If you didn’t have someone you could look up to, you have the chance to be this person for someone else by sharing your story. You open the possibility of someone going through something you already have been through and offering them some guidance or (at least) some company. Sometimes it is already enough to know that we are not alone with our struggles, isn’t it? Then knowing that people made it successfully through it is even more comforting. Getting inspired by the way they handled the situation is almost the jackpot. Especially topics that aren’t spoken about much. Starting the conversation about something that happens to people, but that might be loaded with judgement or shame, is so important and the next reason you should share your story today.

3. Open a new conversation that other people shy away from.

Lately, more and more people open up about stories only a few people were bold enough to talk about. Some topics are loaded with judgment, shame or something that makes people shy away from sharing that they have been through it before. When was the last time you felt ashamed of something? Wouldn’t it be great, especially then to have someone or some place to turn to, in order to simply talk about it or gather information around this topic? Our society is full of topics that are filled with shame and the like. Addiction of any kind, eating disorders, depression, abortion, politics, sex, religion, domestic violence, spirituality – the list goes on and on. And some of those themes like religion, sex or politics are part of all our lives in one way or another. And yet it can be so hard to openly talk about it or gather and exchange information. But those topics are important, and we live in a time where we don’t get hanged for having an opinion, at least in most parts of the world. Shouldn’t we make more use of this freedom? Thinking about our ancestors who didn’t have the luxury of speaking out their truth, their opinion, I think we should The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

be more grateful to even have this possibility and, above all, we should make use of it. People like Tony Robbins, who inspire and help millions of people, shared their story about an abusive childhood, drugs and the like. Gary Vaynerchuk, who came into the US as an immigrant shares his struggles and inspires and helps millions of people. Ariana Huffington, Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou – women with stories, filled with challenges they have been overcoming. Things we can’t even imagine but they shared their story and helped millions of people with it. There are many more people like them, but not enough. They all have something in common: they believed that sharing their story may help at least one person, it was worth it, because they know how it feels to have no support during those times. Their stories inspired me to tell my story and to call up on everyone out there, to do the same.

4. Empower others to tell their story.

By telling your story openly, owning it and showing the world where it brought you, will empower others to speak up too. Think about the recent example the whole “me too” movement. One person started to open the conversation, a few more joined, and suddenly, it became an international known movement. Or when kids were separated from their parents by the US government, within a matter of days, the entire planet was doing whatever was in their power to stop it. Just because a few spoke up and shared what was happening. There is much more power in sharing our stories than we think. Often, we don’t even see that people are watching us, but they are. More than we realize. We are a role model to everyone watching us. We just need to decide what kind of role model we want to be. What is it that we want to model? What is it that we want to teach the people around us? In what way do we want to inspire them? If it is just our neighbour, the person behind us in line in our favourite coffee shop or a person overhearing a conversation we have on the phone with someone, people hear and see us. And every time they do, we get the chance to teach them something. Like I said in the beginning, it doesn’t have to be a book. You don’t have to start a YouTube channel or make your story extremely big. Share it in whatever way feels right, necessary and useful. If you simply talk about it with friends and family. If you share it on your personal social media channel or if you really go big and share it with the entire world in a more public way, iy is up to you. But if there is one takeaway for you here, one thing I want to teach you, it is that your story matters. It is not “just” you, or this “little” thing, or “who wants to hear my story? Who am I? I am not a celebrity.” – you don’t need to be. You can be the most important person in a random person’s life by sharing your story with them. I once sat in an Uber on my way to the airport in Los Angeles, and I always love to talk to the drivers and exchange thoughts on different topics. He was around sixty, over three decades older than me and told me he was very unhappy. He told me the different ways the was trying to become happy. Women, money, power, career, he even went to war to fight for his country because he hoped that this would give him some more meaning in his life. When we arrived at the airport, I grabbed my bag of crystals and picked one for him. As he handed me my luggage, I gave him the crystal,

told him that it is supposed to help him see clearly, feel clearly, and communicate clearly from his heart. If he was really aiming to find happiness, I told him, he needed to look within. Nothing he tried was able to give him the happiness because happiness comes from within. It is something that we create on our own, everything else around us is just adding to the happiness we already created ourselves. I am happy, every single day simply because I am alive. I have been through challenging times before and I’m sure there are many more awaiting me in the future. But I remembered how happy I was as a kid and I worked hard for years to get back to that almost effortless, childlike joy for life. It requires my daily attention and it is a work in progress. I have bad days and bad moods, but I decided that happiness was my natural state of being. He was not really the kind of man you would expect to listen to this kind of perspective. He in fact had a very different perspective on all the topics we were talking about before. But I knew no matter how he would react to what I was telling him, I tried my best to be the role model I want to be in the world. I tried my best to be the person I want to be, the woman I want to be, the Uber guest I want to be, the random person you meet on the street. I did my best to be me, fully vulnerable, opening up a perspective that the majority of people still think is naive, but I know it is true; true for me at least. He stared at me, slowly reached for the crystal I was holding out and his eyes and his entire body language softened, and he asked me if he could hug me. He gave me a hug, thanked me for my words, for the crystal and told me that this was the kindest thing anyone gave and said to him in decades. He told me most people would rather be intimidated by him and wouldn’t treat him very kind. He further told me, that this would give him hope to still find happiness in this lifetime and he would try all the things we were talking about and look at happiness differently. I never saw him again, so far. I don’t know if I ever will. I don’t know what he’ll really do with what I told him. But when I looked in his eyes the second I gave him the crystal, I saw that something within him moved and changed – if it was only for this moment, it taught me how important it is to be who we are. Even if the person we are looking at might be likely to laugh at our opinion, at least we tried and, sometimes, people surprise us and are grateful that we spoke our truth and shared our story. — Published on September 17, 2018 Author: Melissa Kiss - https://thriveglobal.com/ facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

As we say Good-by to 2019 The year is 1919 "One hundred years ago." What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1919: The average life expectancy for men was 47 years. Fuel for cars was sold in drug stores only. Only 14 percent of homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of homes had a telephone. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average US wage in 1919 was 22 cents per hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2,000 per year. A dentist earned $2,500 per year. A veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year. A mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births took place at home. Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called “medical schools,” many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and, used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. The Five leading causes of death were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars... The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30. Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet. There was neither a Mother's Day nor a Father's Day. Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and, only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at local corner drugstores. Back then, pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach, bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health!" (Shocking?) Eighteen percent of households had at least one fulltime servant or domestic help. There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. Who's the Boss? "At the end of the day your feet should be dirty, your hair messy, and your eyes sparkling." -Shanti

All the organs of the body were having a meeting, trying to decide who the one in charge was. "I should be in charge," said the brain. "Because I run all the body's systems, so without me, nothing would happen." "I should be in charge," said the blood. "Because I circulate oxygen all over so without me, you'd all waste away." "I should be in charge," said the stomach." Because I process food and give all of you energy." "I should be in charge," said the legs. “Because I carry the body wherever it needs to go." "I should be in charge," said the eyes. "Because I allow the body to see where it goes." "I should be in charge," said the rectum. "Because I'm responsible for waste removal." All the other body parts laughed at the rectum and insulted him. So, in a huff, he shut down tight. Within a few days, the brain had a terrible headache, the stomach was bloated, the legs got wobbly, the eyes got watery, and the blood was toxic. They all decided that the rectum should be the boss. ENDEAVOUR MORE LIVING

Improving the Quality of Life for People and Animals

Who Are We?

We are Cameron and Reesa Bruce of Strathmore, and we have been distributors of Med Marijuana® Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil products since 2016. Endeavour More Living’s mission is to help improve the quality of life for people and animals with the healthiest oil found on the planet.

How Did Our Company Evolve?

Our first experience with these products was in 2016 when our dog was dying from cancer. The oil immediately helped our dog, and we were instantly sold on the benefits of this gift from nature. Our dog regained his quality of life and lived much longer than anyone expected. Though the oil is not a cure, our dog was able to pass on in his senior years after much more “bonus” time. But we didn’t stop there. Soon after, we started our other dogs and cats and some of our close humans (including ourselves) on the oil. The results were amazing, and it was then that we realized we wanted to share this oil with as many people and animals as possible. Endeavour More Living was born, and it’s been an incredible journey ever since.

Do we grow and process the oil ourselves?

No. The cannabis sativa plants are 100% grown and processed by Stephen Health Agency in Nova Scotia. We don’t have green thumbs, so this is better for everyone!

What Are the Most Exciting Benefits of Med Marijuana®?

There are many reasons why Med Marijuana® Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil excites us. For starters, it is the pure oil from a proprietary strain of the Cannabis Sativa plant bred strictly for medicinal purposes (not to be confused with industrial hemp). It is a safe, natural alternative for humans of all ages and animals—large or small. There are no known side effects with any of these natural products, and they will not interfere with medications. And because you cannot get high from the oil, you do not have to worry about driving or work-related drug testing, offering people another great option for countless health, stress, and sleep-related conditions. Med Marijuana® products are known for their anti-inflammatory and pain-relief benefits, but they are also so nutritionally dense that they provide optimal nutrition to help prevent and combat illness. As nature’s perfect food, you can live on this oil with nothing else but water.

It’s when a customer tells us they’re able to play golf again, or garden after years of not being able to. It’s when a parent tells us that their child can now focus in school and that their grades are improving. It’s when someone is finally able to sleep through the night when they’ve been an insomniac for years. It’s when their pet didn’t have to be euthanized. Or when a lame horse is back running in the field or working on the farm. Or it’s as simple as when someone can reduce or come off their pharmaceuticals. These are some anecdotal rewards of our business, but it is exactly why we are in this business. STRATHMORE’S DOWNTOWN’S FUTURE Have you ever driven through the center of any small town in Alberta and noticed empty buildings, closed businesses and deserted streets? Of course you have, we all have!! The once thriving “downtown” section of many small towns and hamlets that now sit empty has become a big problem in every province across Canada. It seems residents of these communities do not understand the huge importance of “Shopping Locally” and prefer to make the drive to larger centers and spend their money in the “Big Box” stores, especially in this economy when so many people have lost jobs and are struggling financially.

THANK YOU Strathmore! February 15 is our One Year Anniversary!

Madonna is 55, her boyfriend is 22. Tina Turner is 75, her boyfriend is 40. JLo is 42, her boyfriend is 26. Mariah Carey is 44, her ex-husband is 32. Still single?? Relax – your boyfriend is not born yet. We are all mature… until someone pulls out bubble wrap. Of course I talk to myself... sometimes I need expert advice.

Here in Strathmore our town representatives are working hard behind the scenes with the “Strathmore Downtown Revitalization Committee” trying to draw you – the residents of this fine community, to our downtown core. Many people only see our community as all the shopping centers and restaurants that line the Trans-Canada Highway, not realizing all the incredibly unusual and unique stores in our downtown core. There should be a HUGE SIGN on the highway saying, “You don’t know what you’re missing – COME DOWNTOWN!!” Last year the committee constructed those comfortable portable islands for the downtown shoppers to enjoy, a place to sit and visit or enjoy lunch sitting in the sunshine. This year they are working with Huxted Enterprises to facilitate a new composting project in the downtown area. They plan on experimenting with having a park and garden to test the growth of seeds and trees using a unique formula of compost where vegetation will actually grow at a quicker rate than usual. The Town of Strathmore and The Newsy Neighbour are always looking for new ways to support the core businesses of this community. If anyone has any great ideas they would like to share we are all more than eager to listen.

‘Exercise’ and ‘Learning new things’ goals well under way. We are happy with our Diabetic Routines that keep our days organized and health at the optimum level we can get. Don’t misunderstand, we are continually reviewing all these things and tweaking, and making little changes, or re-motivating when necessary. We are human feet, after all. We have decided that 2020 is the year that we need to dedicate to ‘helping others’. We have finished the manuscript to our book, the ABCs of a Day in the Life of Larry and Roger, a Pair of Diabetic Feet. We hit the send button, and it is now in the editors hands. This is a book you will NEED to get your hands (or… feet on…) if you are Diabetic, Pre Diabetic, a Caregiver, a support person or have any other connection with a diabetic person. It gives you a typical day in the life of US!!!! Yes, us… the good ol’ PAIR OF DIABETIC FEET. We have also included a great amount of very valuable information that will help you understand the importance of looking after your feet as a diabetic. It will also give you many ideas and checklists on footcare, buying shoes, nutrition, etc. These will help to clear the muddy waters and help you focus on the tasks that you need to do to keep your feet. I know that Jim, our human, can not possibly consider life without Roger and me. We are enlightening, motivating, and invigorating…we keep him moving in the right direction, if you know what I mean. Roger and I will do all that we can to help. You mean that much to us! We will keep you posted on the progress of the book as we move forward. And we will let you know how to get your hands on your very own copy as soon as it is available. We hope your big goals are keeping you moving forward, also. There is nothing like goals to keep one motivated and successful. So, keep doing all those great things, and moving in a positive direction. Talk to you all next month, and until then…. Make your Footprints Count. Larry and Roger

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF LARRY AND ROGER:

A Pair of Diabetic Feet

Written by: Vicki L Myhre CPOD (I) CMP PFRP. Enlightened Soles. Internationally Certified Podologist. Registered through the Canadian Examining. Board of Health Practitioners

Hi all, Larry here. Happy February, and Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you that celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Roger has his eyes on his computer, doing his constant and diligent surfing to find all the amazing postings that make our life the great life that it is. He says Hi!! May your day be full of love and laughter and a wee bit of Dark Chocolate. We have heard that it is a myth that you can not eat chocolate if you are a diabetic. The reality is that you must eat it in moderation rather than just using it to satisfy your hunger, as it will affect your blood sugars. When eaten in moderation, dark chocolate can be healthy for your body. Dark chocolate contains less amount of carbs than regular milk chocolate and contains ingredients that are healthy. It is recommended to eat dark chocolate that contains at least 70% cocoa or more and if you’re used to sweeter chocolates, it may take a while to get used to the slightly bitter taste. Did you know that chocolate that is 70% cocoa or higher is considered dairy free? Amazing!! Chocolate provides many health benefits to those who consume it, including cutting the risk of heart failure. Chocolate has enzymes called flavanols that help to reduce platelets clumping. These clumps usually result in blocking blood vessels and result in heart attacks. Chocolate has also been proven to reduce stress and improve moods in people. However, dark chocolate does have a fat content, carbs, calories, and sugars so it is important to consume it in moderation. Dark chocolate is healthier, but it is still chocolate. Enjoy a nibble or two! On the New Year’s side of life… Roger and I are wondering how you are all fairing with your New Years Resolutions. We prefer to call them goals, as you probably remember from last year. Last month, we advised you that we would talk to you more in depth about our 2020 Goals. We have been using January to get our heads around how we want to move forward this year and add to our focus and commitments. We feel we already have our ‘Nutrition’ and

SHOP SMART – SMART LOCAL Why it’s Worth it to Support Local Small Businesses | Kyle Penn

A couple of weeks ago, I had a buddy from Calgary come out and meet me for some drinks here in Strathmore. I don’t know if it’s just me and my

group of friends or if this is more of a hard-and-fast rule, but I realized when he asked me for directions to town that despite being fast friends for as long as I can remember, it had been years since he’d come out to meet me in Strathmore – it always seems to be me making the driving into YYC and connecting with everyone there. Anyway! That’s neither here nor there, other than to shine a light on the fact that it had been literally years since this particular individual had made his way out to Strathmore – and when he got here, he was shocked. “It’s like a city out here!” he exclaimed incredulously when I met him. “There’s a McDonalds, a Sobeys, a Starbucks…it’s crazy!” Of course, as any local Strathmorite will tell you, many of these establishments are hardly new, and plenty of these sorts of bigbox businesses have been here for at least a decade or more (remember how long ago it was when that Walmart opened up?). To my city slicker friend’s point, though, our communities are changing – and it’s up to us to decide what shape they take in the years to come.

The Case for Shopping Local

As smooth and affordable an experience shopping at a big-box store might be, there are reasons that so many individuals are advocates for smaller, locally-owned businesses – especially in a town the size of Strathmore. One big argument in favour of local business is that plenty of people remember what the town was like before those big, branded buildings started opening up all over the place. Aside from the preference many have aesthetically for smaller, homespun shops as compared to the often-garish and regularly-enormous chain buildings, plenty of folks take issue with the way these companies run and operate in the first place. There’s a perception out there (one that often isn’t all that incorrect) that big-box corporations open up and drive all the little guys out of town, transforming what was once a thriving sandbox for small, local businesses into a game of king of the hill where the chain stores are the biggest, meanest, toughest kids on the playground. Gone are all the friendly little mom-and-pop shops that used to line the streets and thoroughfares, replaced by vacant storefronts, for-lease signs, and an enormous, neon-glowing big-box store towering overall. This might sound a little dramatic, but ultimately, it tends to ring fairly true. When chain stores move into town, local businesses generally have a very tough time competing, unable to keep up with the larger stock volumes, cheaper prices (often fueled by lower-paying employee wages), and simple convenience of shopping at a chain corporation. Despite all this, though, we here at The Newsy Neighbour remain strong and fast advocates of small, local businesses, and it comes down to one very big reason: community.

Support Local, Support Your Community

When you shop local, not only are you treating yourself to what is generally a more pleasant and personalized shopping experience (our towns’ small business owners really do know how to treat a customer!), but you’re directly supporting the local economy – not to mention local community members themselves. Sure, when you shop at the big-box store down the way, some

Dr. Ashkan Hamzehi DDS; Dr. Sharif Faizi DMD; Dr. Simarjyot Randhawa BDS form of the money you spend will eventually trickle down into the pocket of the cashier who rang you through at the till, but there’s no direct connection – no real through-line. You’re supporting an enormous corporation first, and from there, that business entity provides its employees with a (semi-) living wage. When you shop local, though, the money that you spend goes directly from your pocket and into the bank account of that hard-working local community member. Some of it will go back towards re-stocking the shelves, of course, or keeping the lights on, or paying employees – but ultimately, that money stays within the community to be re-invested in other small, local businesses in return. This is key for many people, and is a big part of the reason why The Newsy Neighbour is such a steadfast supporter of local business – because when locally-owned companies succeed, communities succeed, and there’s nothing we want more for Strathmore, Chestermere, Langdon, and the surrounding towns and hamlets than to find continual growth, success, and prosperity.

Next Time You Shop, Shop Local

So, the next time you need a loaf of bread, a trendy set of duds, or a brand-new hockey stick, think twice about where you shop. Sure, you can probably get what you need at whatever big-box store is most convenient, but we’d suggest taking a second to consider visiting one of our hardworking local businesses to be greeted with a smile and that quintessential Albertan warmth and expertise. It’s not always possible to shop local, but when it is, we strongly encourage you to get out there, support your fellow community members, and experience just what our resident cadre of entrepreneurs and business owners have in store for you – we bet you’ll be a regular local shopper before you know it! facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

JODI VISTE Question: My dog seems to be losing weight as he gets older, but he is happy and fine otherwise. Should I be concerned? Answer: Excellent question. It’s common to see weight loss in older animals for a variety of reasons, but weight loss is never a ‘normal’ old age change. Often, the weight loss can be subtle and not seen until it has progressed quite far. This is why it is important to schedule a regular 6-month check-up on your pet after they turn 8, so that we can pick up on the signs early. The earlier we look into finding the cause, the more likely we are able to provide your pet with a good quality of life in their golden years. Weight loss can be due to nutritional deficiencies, pain/arthritis, diseases of organs (heart, kidney, liver, etc.), parasite burden, lack of exercise (muscle atrophy), neoplasia and other causes. Many of these causes of weight loss can be treated and allow for your pet to live more comfortably in their final years. Treatment for these diseases often doesn’t just mean starting your pet on medication. There are various other tools we have to use, including physiotherapy, veterinary spinal manipulation therapy (chiropractics), acupuncture and other alternative therapies. Our profession has come a long way in being able to help your four-legged family members enjoy as many happy years with your family as possible! If you have any questions or concerns about your pet, don’t ever hesitate to contact your Veterinarian! Dr. Jodi Viste Animal Care Centre of Strathmore

THE PLACE I CALL HOME This summer will be 13 years here in this beautiful town of Strathmore. I have seen this place that we now call home develop and bloom to what it is today, and that is an amazing community. I love the history of this town and I have had the opportunity of learning about it from wonderful seniors when I worked in the hospital in continuing care. Our seniors are full of knowledge. So, if you have the chance, sit down with one of them and learn about our community and what it was a long time ago. There is no greater knowledge or gift in doing just that. Now, I work at Co-op and I still take the opportunity to learn from our seniors and the community in general. We have some wonderful people in this town. There is always something going on here, whether it is school sports or community sports, and events of every kind. The weekends are always busy and are all done in community spirit. The events that happen here are amazing and the volunteers are nothing short of spectacular. Now, when it comes to shopping local, I try my best at doing so, as I want to support our town as much as possible. Yes, there are things that we must go to the city for, but, for the most part, I try and stick to local shopping. Take the time to get to know your neighbour. Say hi to the person who passes you by, or a friendly smile as I feel this community is made up of some great folks. Thanks for reading! ~ Connie Greene

With a very seductive voice, a wife asked her husband, “Have you ever seen twenty dollars all crumpled up?” “No,” said her husband. She gave him a sexy little smile, unbuttoned the top three buttons of her blouse and slowly reached down in her cleavage and pulled out a crumpled twenty dollar bill. He took the crumpled twenty dollar bill from her and smiled approvingly. She then asked, “Have you ever seen a hundred dollars all crumpled up?” “No I haven’t,” he said, an anxious tone in his voice. She gave him another sexy little smile, pulled up her skirt, seductively reached into her underwear and pulled out a crumpled hundred-dollar bill. He took the crumpled hundred-dollar bill and started breathing a little quicker with anticipation. “Now,” she said, “Have you ever seen 50,000 dollars all crumpled up?” “No way!” he said, becoming even more aroused and excited, to which she replied: “Go look in the garage.”

UNDERSTANDING YOUR LOVE LANGUAGE Valentine’s Day is coming up this month and it is often referred to as the day of love. But what about the rest of the year? How do you demonstrate and maintain a loving relationship without feeling you have to constantly shower your partner with gifts? There are many ways to maintain love in a relationship that do not involve expensive or elaborate gifts. The easiest way is to learn your partner’s love language. This ‘love language’ is different for everyone, but it does not take a rocket scientist to create or a linguistic to interpret. To put it simply, your love language is the way you show your partner your love for them, and how you understand your partner’s love for you. But how do you or your partner demonstrate this love language. Let’s look at an example of a love language between a couple, Jane and Joe. Jane despises having to clean the bathroom, it just turns her stomach. Joe knowing this about Jane,

Phone: 403-934-3940 119-2 Avenue. Strathmore, AB even though he does not himself enjoy cleaning the bathroom, will clean the bathroom on a regular basis without being asked. Through simply completing a task that you know the other does not like, is a form of showing love. Jane knows how much Joe loves chili, and even though she is not a big fan, she will make a big bowl of chili on occasion for dinner to give Joe something he loves to eat. Essentially, the love language is the little things we do for each other that are done out of love for the other knowing how much they appreciate it without being asked directly to do it. As I write this, I am reminded that at times we may desire to slap or think of other aggressive methods we could use to inform our partner of their tendency to frustrate us. A healthy relationship full of love will still have moments like this, the key piece is being able to laugh and still love the person even though they frustrate you to no end at times. If you ever have the chance sit down and talk with a couple that has been married for 40, 50, 60 years, ask them why they love the other person. Their response may surprise you, often they do not know why they are in love, rather they may joke about how much the other frustrates them and makes them crazy. Yet in the next breath they may mention how they cannot imagine living without their partner. The key for an outside observer to see the love, is in how the couple looks at each other. They may not be able to describe their love or explain it, but their body language and their eyes tell you all you need to know to understand. With Valentine’s Day coming, so do the advertisements and the push from companies to shower ‘the woman in your life’ with gifts and sparkly items to show her how much you love her. There is nothing wrong if you choose to celebrate Valentines, but it is key to remember that love needs to be experienced throughout the year by both parties. Even though this may get me in trouble, it is important to not forget about the man in your life. Men may not show emotion, but (even if they do not want to admit it) they do enjoy little things that make them feel special, or even the occasional gift. A relationship needs to be bidirectional; love is not simply a one-way unending faucet, rather the water needs to be collected in order to flow through. If a man is constantly showering a woman with gifts without any demonstration of love for him apart from gratitude, he is likely to eventually feel simply as a cash card rather than a partner in love. In conclusion, how do you maintain a loving relationship for 50+ years. To My One and Only, When I first saw you standing alone, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from you. Robed in radiant primary colours and dignified by your towering stature, I desperately wanted to get to know you, IKEA. But my heart grew fonder, not of your outward majesty, but what lay inside: your companionship, your sympathy, and your generosity. In my time of need, you became my everything. When I had nothing, you gave me everything. Your culture and your language, the gift of your creativity and your craftsmanship, and financial freedom amidst my relentless penny pinching. You knew that once I moved out of my parents’ house, I was starting from scratch, but your love is patient and your love is kind. You knew it was hard; I struggled for a long time to get myself settled. Thankfully, you were only a 15-minute drive from me, but I would drive through a thousand raging snowstorms to you if you needed me. Because when I was thirsty, you gave me sparkling apple and lingonberry drink. When I was hungry, you gave me Köttbullar meatballs, frozen. When I was tired, you gave me daybed frame with 3 drawers, twin. Wherever I go, my love, you are there: in my kitchen, in my bathroom, in my bedroom. Yes, on good days like bad, you are never far. My saving grace, my Nirvana– less Buddhist and more the stench of teen spirit, yes– but my home. You made me a part of your family member-only discounts because you said I deserve more, and you prove this every day with a free hot drink waiting for me when I visit you. Mitt hus är ditt hus, you said, and you meant it. Even romantic languages are too cliché for you; you wanted me to know that your house is my house in your own language of love, Swedish. You want me to learn it even though I keep telling you that I should learn a language that I can really use. But because it’s you, my love, I have obliged. In fact, your persistence is one of the many things I love about you. But I know that you and my dad have a complicated relationship. He tells me I’m too good for you, that I shouldn’t waste my time and money on you. He says what we have won’t last because you

won’t last. He thinks you are hollow and you are cheap, and I’ll admit, I was embarrassed when he drilled you that one day and you fell apart. I guess that’s why they say love is blind. But what I know for sure is this: you want a better future for us. You have invested in home solar, veggie hot dogs, and kitchen fronts made of recycled plastic bottles because you want to inspire change. As your father Ingvar said, “no method is more effective than the good example” and you live this out every day. Yes, I can see a future with you; that’s how I know we are right for each other. It was the great Lao Tzu who said that love “attacks simultaneously the head, the heart, and the senses” and you truly have. Your love has attacked me and infiltrated my home, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I remember the first day we met. You told me just because I didn’t have much, it didn’t mean I couldn’t have beautiful things. I know now that you were telling the truth because now I have you. With all my love, Sabrina

Powerful Ways to Show Love to Children Our children are our most important legacy to the world. However, our love is our most important legacy to our children. Here are seven ways to show love that will help children build sturdy foundations for the future.

1. Spend Time with Your Children.

Time is the most loving gift we can give to our children. It allows for the mutual exchange of ideas, emotions, actions, and words that help our children develop and learn to communicate. Enjoy a toddler's tea parties as well as a teen's ball games. Help your children build things and create art. Begin new family traditions that you can enjoy together each year. Ample time spent in mutually enjoyable activities will create memories you will always treasure.

2. Be the Primary Role Model for Your Children.

Children need examples to follow. Teach practical values to your children by modeling those values. Admit when you have made a mistake and apologize. Model being committed to the ideals you embrace. Demonstrate the advantage of integrity over peer pressure. We teach and influence children more through actions than words. We are our children's first heroes; the ideals that we live today are the ideals that will influence our children throughout life.

3. Listen to Your Children.

A child's message is one of his or her most essential gifts. We build self-esteem in children when we show interest in what they have to say. Children need to communicate their pride of accomplishment as well as their needs. Get down at eye level with very young children and listen with your eyes, ears, and heart. Listen most of all to the feelings conveyed through a child's eyes and expressions. If you listen to your children deeply, they will grow up listening deeply to you.

and dreams for the future. Encouraging children to grow mentally, emotionally, and spiritually provides the foundation for living a balanced life.

6. Share Your Experiences with Your Children.

We each have valuable stories to tell, unique maps of our journey through life. These stories tell how our reactions to events created the life we are living now. Sharing the benefit of your experiences — the roadblocks and rewards — is a very loving way to guide your children. Your children may face many of the situations you faced. Your experiences can help them make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary mistakes. Among the most worthwhile possessions that we can someday leave for our children are journals filled with the stories that shaped our lives.

7. Love and Support Your Children Unconditionally.

Love is an unconditional gift from the heart; it is not a reward for good behaviour. Let your children know that you will love and support them in any situation. This message creates a sturdy bond of trust. Your children will grow to feel safe in coming to you with any problem they face. Children need the freedom to make decisions, try new things, and learn that life requires personal responsibility and persistence. They need the freedom to fail and learn from mistakes without being judged. Unconditional love helps them to acquire the decisiveness and resiliency required to become successful. If you could sum up all of our children's needs, hopes, and expectations in one word, that word would be love. We share love when we play a central role in our children's world of learning and discovery. Our legacy of love will have a guiding influence upon our children and grandchildren for many generations. ~ Steve Brunkhorst

4. Provide Your Children with Loving Discipline.

Children need guidelines and safe boundaries without being constrained unnecessarily. They need to learn the value of being accountable for their choices and actions. Let your children know that you disapprove of hurtful actions but will always love them as sons and daughters. Loving discipline enables them to recognize the best in other people. It allows children the freedom to explore the world safely and reach their highest potential.

5. Give Your Children Encouragement.

Encouraging words are powerful emotional deposits of confidence and self-esteem. Verbally acknowledge your children's special talents and accomplishments. Catch your children doing something great, and tell them what a great job they have done. Children need to know that we recognize and support their hopes

A DAY FOR EVERYTHING Have you noticed that there is now a day for everything? Some of them I understand. Mother’s Day – Father’s day. When you are responsible for keeping another human being alive and ensuring they don’t grow up to be an arse you deserve a day. Earth Day? Home to 7.5 billion people, the most of which seem to treat you as a trash receptacle. You can have a day. Save the Eagles Day (Jan 10th) I can get behind that – eagles are cool, so is the band. But really, do we need a National Oysters Rockefeller Day? I am allergic to shellfish so maybe that’s why I don’t understand. Are oysters Rockefeller really, really hard to make? Does the recipe involve some exotic spice that can only be harvested on the third full moon of the new year after a rain of 50 mm or more? Are oysters especially dangerous to harvest that oyster farmers risk life and limb to collect them? Why, why do they get a day? Who else gets a day? Rubber ducks. January 13th, go ahead and

google it. I’ll wait. Yes, rubber duckie you are the one – you make bath timey so much fun but really who besides Ernie and the Sesame Street gang needs an entire day to celebrate rubber ducks. Also celebrated on January 13th is National Clean Off Your Desk Day. I tend to celebrate cleaning off my desk on Fridays but apparently the really big celebration takes part in January. I wonder if I need to send out an invitation to my co-workers and bring in a cake? Or am I limited to National Cake day for that? May 7th World Cake Day and in the US and Canada we prove our love of cake by celebrating National Cake day in November. So yeah – two days a year to celebrate cake. But not cupcakes! Don’t celebrate cupcakes on May 7th or November 26th. You’d be wrong – no they don’t want to share their day so celebrate cupcakes on February 24th. Oh, and cheesecake, that’s a summer event - July 30th. Fruit cake of course has its day after Christmas on the 27th of December. Angel food cake – October and if you prefer chocolate cake we are back to January. Sponge cake is August although I admit I’m not really sure what a sponge cake is. I am beyond confused. I no longer know if I can have my cake and eat it too, or will I be somehow upsetting the world order by eating the wrong cake on the wrong day? Maybe I should just skip the cake… Pie is good. National Pie Day is January 23rd, unless it’s pumpkin – that’s actually Christmas day. Lemon Meringue – August 15th. Apple, cherry, rhubarb, coconut cream and pecan? They all have their days too. This is stupid. No, it can’t be. National Stupid Day isn’t today – it’s the last Friday in September. Ahh! So frustrating. But I can’t scream in frustration until October when International Moment of Frustration Scream Day is celebrated. Oh, for F sake! Seriously, October 4th? We need a day for this? I feel like every day is this. Mark it in your calendars, everyone. October 4th. National F Off Day. What ever happened to just celebrating our birthdays and calling that day our cake day? When did we get to the point that everything under the sun needed it’s own day? April 17th - National Everything Day. While celebrating my birthday is not as big a deal as it was when I was a child, I’m not thrilled with sharing the day with National Waffle Day and National Peach Pie Day. How did I forget about peach pie? Does this mean I have peach pie instead of cake? You know what? I am declaring today NATIONAL STOP MAKING UP STUPID NATIONAL DAYS DAY! Unless the boss is willing to pay time-and-a-half, I think we should just celebrate what makes us happy and if that means celebrating rubber ducks or waffles or earth day or Lord help us, National Ballpoint Pen day followed by National Pop Goes the Weasel day, then celebrate. Celebrate in the moment and don’t wait for a special day, because despite the absurdity of it all, we aren’t guaranteed to make it to tomorrow let alone National Leave a Zucchini on Your Neighbour Porch day. 100 Years of Memories: Celebrating Strathmore's Centennial Paul Sonsteby Polished Publishing Group, 2012 ISBN: 9780987812605

With 100 Years of Memories, author Paul Sonsteby has written a comprehensive, compelling chronicle of the establishment and growth of the town of Strathmore, from its beginnings in the 1800s to the present day. The attractive and professional design draws the reader's eye, offering a glimpse of the obvious care and craft with which it was created. The text and photographs within are easy to follow and guide the reader seamlessly through the years as the story of Strathmore unfolds. A further, personal touch is evident on the spine of each hard-cover copy: they are individually numbered. The book's contents are arranged by decade, with the exception of the pre-1900 era; that section makes up the initial chapter. Within each of these, year-by-year accounts are provided. As the history progresses, these yearly records become expanded and are divided into monthly entries. Important lines or excerpts are formatted in bold print, allowing the reader to locate them—and relocate them—with ease. One of the most impressive features is the occasional, longer passages that run for several pages. They explore such things as significant events, organizations or people that played a crucial role in defining Strathmore's past and helped to make the municipality the place it has become. Unlike many community histories, 100 Years of Memories is more than simply a listing of dates, times and events that occurred in the years immediately preceding and throughout the century of Strathmore's existence. This centennial book is a decade-by-decade testimonial to the determination and character that saw the town develop from a simple railroad siding into the vibrant and diverse community that exists today. Whether you're a resident or merely a student of history, it's definitely worth picking up a copy—which, by the way, is available at the town office. ~ Derek Donais

In 1985, honeycomb shades were invented ergy crisis of the late 1970s. Innovations since then have brought about improved designs, such as the honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb design for even greater energy efficiency. Without energy-efficient window treatments, as much as 50% of a home's heating and cooling energy can be lost through its windows. WINDOW COVERINGS HELP CONSERVE ENERGY AT THE WINDOW IN SEVERAL IMPORTANT WAYS:

Insulation

In winter months, your home heating escapes to the outdoors through your windows while in the summertime, the outside heat flows into your home through these same windows. With window treatments that provide insulation, you can reduce energy consumption, save on heating and cooling costs, and create a more comfortable atmosphere.

Motorization

Motorization is a good way to fully take advantage of the energy savings your window coverings can provide. Schedule your window coverings to open and close at just the right time of day to allow heat in during the winter and keep it out during the summer. You don’t need to remember to open or close you window coverings, or even be home, it’s all automated.

Solar Heat Control

The warmth provided by the sun, its solar energy, may be desirable during the winter to help heat your home, but in the summer, it can make a room overly hot and uncomfortable— driving up air conditioning costs. Window coverings will help to control solar heat by allowing it into your home in the winter and minimizing the amount that comes in during the summer. In 2008, “V2K Decor and More” began operations in Medicine Hat. In 2010, the company rebranded, becoming “Gotcha Covered” and then in 2013, became Boutique Blinds. In 2017, Boutique Blinds was purchased by Robin and Brenda Impey and brought to Strathmore. Robin and Brenda also own the M&M Food Market locations in Strathmore and Chestermere.

After working with other window covering brands for 5 years, the decision to supply 100% Hunter Douglas products was made in 2013; a good decision for the company, and one that has been embraced by Robin & Brenda.

WHY HUNTER DOUGLAS?

a Hunter Douglas dealer is their exceptional customer support.

Offer valid January 13th - March 29th, 2020

Hunter Douglas is widely known for quality products, focussed on safety, warranty, motorization, a wide selection of products, and innovation. In fact, the majority of window covering styles on the market today were created by Hunter Douglas.

From the beginning, there were several ways that Robin & Brenda saw Boutique Blinds could better serve their customers: 1. Training as both window covering consultants and installers would simplified the entire process. 2. Focusing on in-home consultations, the place best suited to selecting window coverings. This means there is not a store front, but rather a partnership with Strathmore Flooring where a display of Hunter Douglas products can be viewed. 3. Flexibility. Many people can not meet during a traditional 9-5 work day, so Boutique Blinds will come to you during the day, the evening, or on the weekend. Robin & Brenda work together with Carol & Gary Podwinski to service Strathmore, Chestermere and surrounding areas. Robin & Brenda live in Strathmore, while Carol & Gary live in Chestermere. Boutique Blinds does both residential and commercial, and would be happy to help you with blinds, shades, shutters, and new this year, custom drapery! All styles available with motorization!

Hello, Newsy Neighbour Readers. Or should I say, Happy New Year? January 25, 2020 (Robbie Burns Day to us) marked the beginning of the Chinese Year of the Rat. The rat is a sign of wealth in Chinese culture. Chinese New Year is the most important festival in China, and if you have had a chance to visit a supermarket catering to Albertans of Chinese heritage, you will have seen the crowds of people stocking up for the many festive meals. Happy Makar Sankranti! This Indian festival is about food, fun and dancing. Pongal is a festival celebrated by Tamils and Pedha Panduga is celebrated by my father’s family in South India. For Punjabis, it’s Lohri. For our Orthodox Christian friends, Orthodox Christmas falls on January 7th and many of our Ukrainian neighbours celebrated on that day. Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that lasts eight days and nights. Rosh Hashana is the Jewish New Year, and people celebrate Kwanzaa, a gift giving celebration that is actually an American holiday for African Americans celebrating the harvest and acknowledging the slave trade that brought Africans to America from West Africa. Common themes of all these celebrations are renewal of faith and the earth, the promise of a new year, health, wealth and prosperity. We see colourful new outfits, and of course, we enjoy the food! We consume everything from turkey to apples dipped in honey, from family style Chinese feasts to beautiful milk sweets shared door to door in India. The common threads are celebration, family, and new beginnings. Culture is the variety and the spice of life that brings together different values, beliefs and interests. We love to see our different identities blend together in this amazing tapestry that has built our wonderful province and country. We long to connect with people, and it’s not about agreeing with each other but more about many different ideas that work together. Commu-

nication is key in understanding and breaking down barriers to being successful, and we are the type of province that revels in breaking through the norm, and how those things shape and change us for the better. I love watching people interact with the world and how people interpret things differently from me. It is very humbling and I am so honoured everyday that I have the opportunity to learn. It is about respect, genuine interest, sharing traditions, gathering family, and creating memories. On this note, please make sure that you support your local food banks and spread joy and love to as many as possible. Not everyone is as fortunate, and anyone can lose their job, a loved one, or be otherwise challenged. In this New Year, in all its wonderful manifestations, I want to thank you for your generosity to your neighbours and for the honour of representing you. I would like to thank those of you who attended my town hall for the Farmer Led Research Engagement or took the time to send online your ideas for the direction of agricultural research in Alberta. Agriculture is one of the pillars of our economy and we want to make sure that our research dollars are directed in ways that maximise return. Save the date! Alberta has made and continues to make an outsized contribution to Canada. I would like to invite all of you to attend my Fair Deal Town Hall at the Cheadle Hall, Saturday February 8, 10 AM until Noon. As you know, the provincial Fair Deal Panel has been touring the province, consulting Albertans on strategies to secure a fair deal in the Canadian federation and advance our vital economic interests. I want to hear from you! One or more panel members will be joining me to hear your views on how to improve Alberta’s position within Confederation. For further information call my office at 403-962-0126 or visit https:// www.alberta.ca/fair-deal-panel.aspx. As always, I love to hear from you on any issue.

VOLKS TECH APPLIANCE Volks Tech Appliance Service is family owned and operated and we are proud to be serving Strathmore and surrounding areas. Shan Simpson is a second-generation appliance technician. Growing up, he spent a lot of time with his dad fixing cars and appliances. By the time Shan graduated in ’96, he became a full-time apprentice, and shortly after he started working for Whirlpool Canada. In 2002, Shan got married and moved to Strathmore. We fell in love with this community and chose to raise our family here. In 2007, Shan took a leap of faith and started his own company. He chose the name partly for his love of collecting and fixing Volkswagens. But mostly because the word ‘volks’ means ‘people’. So translated, the company name is ‘Peoples Tech’. His vision has always been to provide honest, reliable service and to be a valued part of this community.

TOWN OF STRATHMORE “Where Quality of Life is a Way of Life” Strathmore is a short 40 km drive East of Calgary. My husband works in downtown Calgary and makes the drive back and forth every single day and by the amount of traffic on Highway 1, I would guess there are quite a few residents working in Calgary and living in Strathmore. Strathmore began as a community willing to give more, when on July 28, 1883, Canadian Pacific forces manually laid a record setting 6.38 miles of track across the prairies. By 1886, the intensive advertising campaign, launched by the Federal Government with the CPR to bring settlers west, was beginning to work. By 1906, both irrigation water and settlers from the U.S. and the “old country” were pouring into Strathmore and the CPR began planning for the development of what was to become a world famous demonstration farm. The farm was designed to act as both a model and an instruction tool for settlers, many of who had never farmed before. The majority of the 2,000-acre demonstration farm was cultivated and almost 700 acres was irrigated.

Although Strathmore and area was settled and developed by the CPR, by the middle 1950’s it was obvious that highway competition was eliminating the railway’s freight business. In 1981 the actual last rail was removed. But the CPR left Strathmore a living legacy – the irrigation system. Today, the population of Strathmore is over 13,000 and growing steadily since the 1990 population of 3,746. This town is incredibly pro-active with a clear view of future growth with new sub-divisions popping up on either side of us and town council has many diverse and interesting future plans for our community. While agricultural developments cover large areas of the surrounding area, Strathmore provides its residents with the benefits of country living, town services and easy access to large city facilities while residing in an area that combine heritage and modern amenities. We also offer a wide choice of restaurants, accommodations, hospitality, local wines and shopping. Did you know we have the 2nd largest rural recycle site in Alberta? A place I visit at least once a week with my cardboard, tin cans, plastic containers, paper, newspapers, glass – the list goes on and on; you name it they take it – I mean everything! Very impressive. However you look at it, Strathmore is a great place to live and getting better everyday. If you are considering a rural move, take a closer look at Strathmore – you will love the warm residents and growing business base! Strathmore has everything you could ever want! Kathryn Hartwell

Your Business Love Story February is the month of love and while our business will not be sending us flowers, I think I can safely say most entrepreneurs (myself included) run businesses founded by a passion, rooted in a love for something specific or because we had a spark of an idea or business model that had to see the light of day. With time though, those emotional first steps had to be balanced with more head-based decisions because passion is a “strong and barely controllable emotion” that cannot sustain in the reality of running a business. The intensity burns out, only to be replaced by a love for what we do and a more levelheaded approach to how we do it. This process, those early days of learning, of trial and error become an important part of a companies’ story. . This process, those early days of learning, of trial and error become an important part of a companies’ story. Why does your company need to tell its story? To stand out from the noise and cookie cutter marketing of your competitors. Business storytelling provides a compelling reason for consumers to buy from you; it inspires trust and draws people in. Modern companies are expected to have a personality, a willingness to share who they are. Writing and sharing your company’s story also gives you control of the message, don’t let others weave a false tale of who you really are. After you have crafted and shared your original story, the rest will be an ongoing process enabling existing customers and

potential new customers the opportunity to see who you are; the growth, shifts and yes, even the stumbles. Today’s consumer expects to see honesty from the companies they do business with so when and where do you use it? “Use your story on your company’s About page, in your emails, in your brochures, in any direct mail you send out, and at events where you are speaking. The rule is: “Everywhere you are, your story should be, too.” Neil Patel, Author & Digital Marketer Sometimes you will just use a few sentences such as when you are introduced at a networking event. Your website’s About page needs to come to life with four to five well written paragraphs. Marketing will become more authentic and unique through ‘story’ blurbs in your ads or social media. Good story copy covers: • The reason why your company came to be • Which problem do you solve? • What are you doing now to fix the problem? • A view of the people behind the company • Your values, something that you and your staff/team embrace • What’s your mission, what are you all working towards? Be honest, be authentic; don’t dwell on the irrelevant but don’t shy away from sharing the rough patches as well as the successes and aha moments. The words should energize, motivate, and inspire the reader or listener. Include visuals not just on your social media but also your website especially the About page. Website visitors no longer want to be met with a sea of words when they visit your website. There should be a blend of professional and personal snapshots all intended to capture you, your staff and behind the scene peaks at your business Ultimately, it all comes down to sharing the experience of doing something you love.

TIME TO REFINANCE

|PRIDE |PASSION |PURPOSE

With the holiday season behind us and the new year under way, and while historically this is the time we review our investment portfolio and get ready for tax time, it may also be a good opportunity to review your existing mortgage, and see if any changes or restructuring are in order. While there may be any number of reasons or purposes for refinancing, such as lowering your existing mortgage rate and payment, maybe some renovations, or the purchase of a new vehicle, perhaps the biggest reason to consider the restructuring process is to consolidate outstanding debt. For many Canadian homeowners, it can be overwhelming trying to pay down or pay off multiple credit lines and loan type products while balancing the other monthly household expenses. If enough equity exists in your home, you could benefit in several different ways. First, you could save on interest charges and lower your monthly payment obligations by consolidating this debt with your existing mortgage. You could be saving thousands of dollars in unnecessary interest by securing a lower interest rate on your mortgage versus the high interest costs that most credit card and line of credit accounts carry. Secondly, this would allow you to or ensure that you maintain a good credit rating. Not only is paying one bill instead of multiple bills each month easier to manage, with the other credit accounts being paid off, your credit score will continue to rise, and therefore, no risk of any accounts going into default. Finally, become debt free faster. Since your new mortgage payment is likely smaller than the combined total of your previous monthly obligations, this will allow you the option of either saving and/or paying off your mortgage faster. If you choose, you may also take advantage of the prepayment privileges that accompany most mortgages. You would be surprised what a difference it can make just putting a little extra each month towards your mortgage. These extra payments go straight towards the principal and not a penny goes to interest. If you are looking for a change, and/or would like to experience the convenience and value of working with a dedicated mortgage professional, please ensure that they have their proper accreditation. Many years ago, I read a self-help book by Stephen R. Covey and I came to understand how my natural curiosity allowed me to easily connect with people. This book has been read, or listened to, by millions of people world-wide and introduced new concepts and phrases that have become part of our everyday culture. Curious to know what the book was? It is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and it positively impacted how I parented, showed up in relationships, faced challenges, made decisions, interacted with others, approached my work and how I viewed life. While I found all of the Habits discussed in Covey’s book to be simple and powerful, there were two that stood out. The first was ‘Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood’ and the second was ‘Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw.’

SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND

“Most of the successful people I’ve known are the ones who do more listening than talking.” ~ Bernard Baruch Who do you love? Your family? Your partner? Your friends? Your neighbours? Your co-workers? If you have a business, do you love all of your clients? How about your pet or that friendly server at the coffee shop? There are a lot of people to love in our lives, and while we may love them in different ways and for different reasons, we want them to have positive feelings about us too. I learned something profound many years ago that has helped me have stronger relationships with the people in my life, create instant rapport with strangers I meet, attract ideal clients who I am blessed to work with, and develop a synergy with participants in workshops I facilitate. What did I learn? I learned the value of always being curious.

While Habit 7 reminds us of the importance of taking time to renew ourselves in order to be more effective, Habit 5 become a mantra that I shared with family, friends and clients. I saw Habit 5 prevent misunderstandings and resolve disagreements. Promote curiosity, empathy and open-mindedness. Increase listening skills, emotional intelligence and clearer communication. Habit 5 encourages others to respond to you with genuine kindness, cooperation and positive actions by building trust. Seeking to understand before being understood is a simple habit but it goes against the process most people have learned to use when communicating. As humans, we tend to focus on getting others to understand our point, our reasoning or our perspective. We selectively listen to others while we prepare in our minds what we are going to say next; we are not giving 100% of our attention to the other person. We believe our ideas, our solutions, our knowledge or our opinions are correct or that we know what is right for someone else. We make efforts to share our ‘rightness’ before we take the time to fully understand the other person’s perspective, needs or thoughts. A communication breakdown can occur, an argument may begin or a potential customer / client walks away because they feel unimportant, their needs are irrelevant or that they are being sold to. We often approach conversations from our own frame of reference, life experiences and personal needs. We forget that other people’s frame of reference, experiences and needs may be different than our own. When we are curious, ask questions and listen empathetically, we expand our understanding of others and may gain new insights or knowledge. When this Habit is practiced regularly in one’s personal life, relationships can experience positive changes. When it is practiced in business (with a genuine desire to get to know customers and clients), new opportunities for products or services can be identified, casual customers are likely to become regulars, you will have a better understanding of the true needs of the customers you love and you will attract more of them, and people will spread the news about how good they feel about your business. So during this month of love, consider falling in love with being curious. Ask questions. Discover what others need, think and feel. Listen intently and with empathy. Make Habit 5 a habit in all your relationships and seek to understand… and then to be understood. If you would like ideas for using curiosity and Habit 5 to grow your business, email me at Darlis@True-TurningPoint.com to request a no-obligation chat. I look forward to hearing from you.
