elcome to the latest edition of Advance, the newsletter that keeps you up to date with YWAM ministries in England as well as further afield.
This is another story-filled treasure chest of young and old people alike stepping out in faith for the sake of God’s unfolding Kingdom on earth. We are proudly intergenerational in YWAM and affirm vision and the voices of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds in the mission…… belonging, stepping up and following God’s call. I was recently in Germany with YWAM, and was told of an old building near Erfhut that has miraculously been bought for 200,000 Euros by a woman in her 30’s called Suse. With no idea about fund raising, she felt God calling her to step out in faith and use the building to train young German missionaries. God provided all of the money within 5 weeks and they are now moving in. God is good! Numbers and buildings might be a measure of growth and fruitfulness but not God’s definition of success. Here’s my simple take on it. Acts 13:22-23 says, “I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man after my heart, who will do all of my will. ’. ESV God exalted David because he loved God and was obedient to everything He asked him to do. Imagine God saying that about you publically!
I believe that God measures success in terms of our love for Him and our obedience to whatever He asks us to do. Think about it - it’s not about how ‘good’ you are, how productive, gifted or even how publically recognised you are; it’s about obedience, trusting and loving God. I find this liberating. Suse experienced success when she spent time in God’s presence, heard Him speak, and stepped out in faith. That was when she succeeded in God’s eyes, NOT when she actually bought the building. This change in mindset could change your whole life. The fruit is not the building but the outworking of an intimate life after God. In this edition we take a look at YWAM’s University of the Nations (U of N). You might not be aware that internationally we have been working towards higher education qualifications as a Christian university. We want to equip people more effectively into their destiny and after 20 years of investment we provide training for various areas of ministry and Kingdom life. In YWAM, we aim to empower and catalyse people to more ably love God and obey His calling in their lives. I really hope you enjoy these stories. Remember they are stories of ordinary people that have stepped out in faith because they love God first. We celebrate their success.

The journey began with God giving Matt Partington a vision to minister to men coming out of addiction. Matt grew up in Yeldall Manor, a Christian drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre near Reading, and since then has had a heart to see these men discipled and established in faith. While still in the early stages of the planning, Matt felt to expand this vision to urban ministry in Reading with YWAM’ers coming to establish training, mercy ministry and evangelism. In September, as a result of Matt’s efforts in recruiting and God’s abundant favour, a team of 5 people from 4 nations moved into a house near Reading to establish this new YWAM location. We spent the first few months of our time together building on the foundation that Matt started and travelling to other YWAM locations and events in order to bond as a team and discover how to pioneer effectively. We met together regularly to pray, worship, study, establish team values and policies, all the while continuing to stay connected with Yeldall Manor. The biggest highlight so far has been the week we hosted two DTS teams – one from The King’s Lodge and one from Cambridge, for lectures and evangelism on the streets of Reading.

Connie Taylor and her team taught us how to use gospel bracelets, and together we saw people reached and impacted by the love of God, with many accepting Jesus into their lives! We also sent a group of people to work with Yeldall Manor for a few days, and the trainees were able to share their lives and faith with the men while working alongside them in the grounds. It was a very encouraging week for us, seeing so many open people on the streets and having the opportunity to share the love of God with them. We were full of anticipation for what God has in store for us this coming year! From January, we shifted our focus to be more actively outward in ministry and evangelism in Reading, and continue to work with men coming out of addiction. For the first part of the year, our focus will be running an ‘Alpha type’ course for these men and others from the community interested in Christianity, as well as a mini-DTS to disciple those who want to go deeper in their faith. We are so encouraged by the variety of ministries already happening in Reading and are looking forward to strengthening and building with them in the future. Taryn Cooper

Cáceres is situated in the state of Extremadura, eastern Spain. It’s a city of 120,000 inhabitants, of which almost 20,000 are undergraduates. Beginning as a medieval town, birthed in 56 BC, Cáceres is a city that breathes history when you walk through it’s streets. Throughout history it has been the home of Visigoths, Romans, Jews, Arabs and finally the Crusades, making this country Roman Catholic. However, nowadays there are only two evangelical churches, with a mere 120 evangelical Christians, most of whom are non-Spaniards. Today, we have already grown to be 19 staff in our team, living in a building in the midst of the city with capacity for up to 60 people. The various schools we run, DTS, School of Arts, Africa Project, Language Schools for the local community and
Church Planting training, facilitate us to train many young missionaries and church planters and bless the local community. Many of the villages near our town do not have churches at all; our heart is to see people enabled to plant churches and see those villages transformed with the love of Jesus. Much of our work is very relational. Being Brazilian, we love bringing people together, to enjoy food, laugh and celebrate as we share about God. Next year we will send a team to plant a new YWAM location in the north of Spain: in Galícia. Pray for us... We are extending the Kingdom of God in Spain, desiring that more people join us and most importantly that Spaniards have an encounter with Father God. He awaits a pioneering move from England to bless this nation. We want to receive support from teams and people that want to come and bless this land. But it has to be people full of the Spirit of God, because only through the action of the Holy Spirit we can be relevant on this land.

Growth in Spain|Cáceres

n January 2010, the base of YWAM in Cáceres, Spain was pioneered and established. A team of 3 couples came from Brazil with a radical desire to obey God in Spain and Europe. We arrived without adequate support for this challenge, but having the certainty that we were doing what He called us to do, and we only had to obey.

‘Loren & Darlene Cunningham (founders of YWAM) present a graduation gift’

hat does a young orphan from Central African Republic with a Community Development major have in common with a middle class Bible teacher from Japan, a trained writer from Kentucky, USA, a peace builder from Nigeria working in broken communities in Rockford, Illinois (USA), a trained Bible teacher from Great Britain equipping young Brits with inductive biblical study tools, a Chinese missionary with an intercultural studies major working long term with the Chinese communities in England, South American artists touching and transforming unchurched young lives in London through their creative arts expressions, and a Bangladeshi leader with an ‘insatiable’ appetite for missions and social transformation in his native country? They have all been trained in YWAM’s University of the Nations (UofN), sharing the same passion to see the gospel change lives, and transform society. Founded by Loren Cunningham (YWAM’s co-founder) and the late Howard Malmstadt, who is widely known as the ‘father of modern electronic and computerised instrumentation in chemistry’, the UofN was pioneered in YWAM in 1978 to create a platform for access to quality education rooted

in Biblical worldview, equipping and training especially young Christians to preach the gospel to every individual and disciple all nations. Associate’s degrees, Bachelor’s degrees, Graduate Diplomas and Master’s degrees are offered from its seven colleges. These colleges are: the Arts and Sports, Christian Ministries, Communication, Counselling and Health Care, Education, Humanities and International Studies, and Science and Technology. Our Discipleship Training School (DTS) is the core programme which is required for all the secondary training programmes. The DTS format of three months of lectures with weekly speakers followed up by three months outreach is adhered to by all the secondary training programmes. In England and Wales, our training centres offer up to Associate of Arts degrees in Biblical Studies, Humanities & International Studies, Counselling, and Communications & Media. The courses in U of N adhere to quality standards and are all committed to Apostle Peter’s admonishing in 2 Peter 1:5-8
…..make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. “The U of N is unique because it exists for a different reason: to equip and train people to do the work of God throughout the nations; to give them opportunities to serve in countries they cannot enter as traditional misisonaries; and serve in arenas of society where they could not serve without the qualifying tools to do so.” As a multiplier for missions, our trainees are equipped with biblically rooted tools consistent with their God-given purpose and destiny as individuals in order to reach all of society.
Because of the UofN’s global scope, our large capacity of young passionate trainees continue to use fresh and innovative ideas around the world to activate the great commission and to see social transformation in their communities and all spheres of society. We continue to offer opportunities especially for the emerging generation to find purpose in God and make a difference where they serve. Urban Key has three generations of YWAMers leading, working and participating in its community. In 2002, Jose Maria and Rosana Liste arrived from Argentina with one desire in their hearts: “To see lives transformed; to see people live abundant lives; to be radical for Christ; to respond to His priorities, be motivated by His love and extend His Kingdom.” Within five years their two married daughters moved to the UK with their young families, where together they have pioneered, developed and established a YWAM community in the heart of London. “This process has been one of complete dependency on God, as there aren’t many books written about ‘How to lead your own children in ministry’ and the biblical examples we have, often end in crisis.” Rosana commented. “We understand that throughout history the efficiency of working and living in unity as a family has always been extremely strategic; that’s why this concept of family priesthood has been and is continuously attacked. When we moved to London and rented our first house, I was greatly inspired when I spoke to the owner’s son, who although belonging to a multi-millionaire Indian family, chose to live together as a whole family under

the same roof, resolving conflicts simply and believing in the strength of the family unit.” Since then, almost 12 years ago, YWAM London Urban Key has seen their DTS schools multiply, new ministries emerge and many young people’s lives touched. “Our multiplication has come from years of pruning and brokenness,” Rosana commented, “understanding the power of community, and desiring that our lives form an expression of worship both in this nation and Western Europe. We surrender our aspirations to God so that His dreams can be completed.” Today, an integral part of YWAM London Urban Key is its active involvement in city life, working in areas such as the Government, Arts and Evangelism. They run four DTS’s a year, as well as Leadership, Counselling and Bible Schools, whilst also leading two Arts Internships annually. Their teams are involved in local, national and international outreaches working on a weekly basis with other governmental and non-governmental organisations. However, it is not the diversity or the number of schools and ministries that define YWAM London Urban Key but rather the welcoming ‘family’, whose daily lives encourage, enable and empower individuals to grow, mature and experience life in order that they too can become spiritual parents themselves. Zimbabwean Shephen, leader of YWAM Mozambique, began to fly in regularly by helicopter with his British wife Caitlin, who is a teacher. Caitlin discovered that although a few people had learned to read elsewhere, there were no local teachers in the villages. Traditionally all learning had been by rote, having students repeat answers with no assessment of their understanding. “I wanted to help them see that our children are not all the same, and to interact with the way that each child actually learns.” Caitlin had home schooled their three daughters in remote places and with simple conditions, and found that principles of “tailoring” learning to the child’s strengths applied very well in this context. Her experience taught her flexibility which helped in dealing with rural realities. For instance, in the village, students and local teachers often had to miss school to be “on baboon duty” to protect the crops! Literacy opens the world up to people in remote locations or isolated situations.

According to World Bank, educating girls significantly raises the survival rate of their children in the future. But there’s more. Shephen says “not just children but adults are being taught to read. First this provides a framework for them to receive the Gospel. Then, as they view the world through the ‘lens’ of Biblical truth, their world view is changed, and they gain new hope for themselves, their families, and their community.” Knowledge, it is said, is a commodity that can be shared without being lost. In Sena culture, as in our own, some may withhold knowledge to retain power and position. Caitlin insists “Everyone has something they can teach- some skill or knowledge they can share with others. This is genuinely ‘loving my neighbour’”. This is the spirit in which reading and writing can be taught. Caitlin and a team of co-workers have chosen for the time being to focus on one village, in the hope of modelling practices that can be emulated throughout the region. Their prayer is for Mozambican YWAMers, with a heart for education, to be able to minister to the villagers full time, spreading the Good News along with the gift of literacy. Becky Mehaffey

any years ago Shephen and Caitlin Mbewe were called by God to bring the Gospel to very remote villages deep in the Zambezi Delta of Mozambique. Initially arriving via a long and hazardous journey requiring several boat trips, Shephen found that although the villages possessed no scriptures, there was a translation available in their specific dialect of the local language, Sena. The discovery led the Mbewes to ask the important question “can the people read at all?”

For the last 2 years, Mariano & Jaris Gauna, a Brazilian family, have been partnering with local ministries and churches to facilitate YWAM teams to bless local communities in Greater Manchester, particularly Hulme and Bolton. The Gauna family, now YWAM Associates, are committed to being a bridge for future YWAM teams to support different local partnerships with a kingdom vision of reaching out to their communities through the local church. Through hosting teams that have simply served, blessed, prayer walked, and encouraged over the last few years, outreach ministries in the area have seen significant growth.
and serving, they have seen some from the community become believers. Last October, they baptised 11 people, quite a few were young people and from the community.
In Oct 2013, a team from YWAM Harpenden spent a couple of weeks blessing some of these local partnerships. Passion for Jesus, a local ministry in a majority Islamic community in Bolton, led by Carla Pickering, had the team restore the prayer house: cleaning, painting, praying and building friendship with local kids. Barbara, one of the team, commented on how amazing it was to see that Carla has so much passion for the community, and is very active in building relationships with people of all ages. ‘It was so wonderful to be able to bless in practical ways, and encourage the local people who are serving day in and day out.’ The prayer house is now much more welcoming and is actively used.
They have recently had some hard times as well as last month, 2 people they knew, died in tragic circumstances...one committed suicide and the other died of drug overdose. These are the kind of people they are reaching out to and would appreciate prayers and intercession.
Mariano and Jaris have been in Greater Manchester since March 2012 following a desire the Lord put in their hearts to serve churches and reach communities. Mariano serves as one of the pastors of New Hope Fellowship Church in Hulme. The Lord has been moving in such a powerful way in that community that, after many years of praying

Over the past few years, I’ve been building relationship and trust with several women I met through a local church outreach to working girls, helping them step out of the cycle of brokenness and into the Kingdom. Last year ‘Pearls Project’ was officially launched! Everyday is unique, as is every woman we come across. This makes for a life full of fun and beauty, along with the sadness of hearing some heartbreaking stories of the pain and abuse the women live with now and since they were children. It has been a privilege to be able to journey alongside the women seeing some get to know more of God’s love and hope and some start to desire more in life. We are hungry to see miracles and for women to be set free, but also regularly see beauty in the process of healing and transformation. One amazing woman we work with, Anna*, loves worship music and praying and will often listen to worship CDs on full blast in her hostel room! Anna told us 2 years ago that she had nightmares every night for as long she could remember (she’s nearly 40); most nights being too frightened to sleep in her bed. Recently, she described to us an amazing dream she’d had. We started to try interpreting her dream when she interrupted, “NO! I’ve just had a good dream!” God had answered prayers and that was enough! The good dreams or no dreams have continued since then. Anna continues to say “God’s got a good plan for me!”
Currently the team is made up of 3 people (Jude full time, Erinne and Sara part time). We run a women’s group weekly, involving crafts and baking! It’s beautiful to see the women gain confidence in their creativity and being together. We also offer individual spiritual and practical support praying with the women, helping them move forward in life: coffee & chats, helping with shopping and spending money wisely, and helping them move forward in their recovery from addiction. We also run Pamper Nights, day trips out and celebrate special days! Our aim, as we love and serve these women, is to lead them into encounters with Jesus who can bring them into His love and hope. We would love God to provide a house or flat that Pearls Project can call home; a welcoming place where we can meet the women and they will get to know more of God’s love. To facilitate this, we’re also praying for more YWAM teams to come and join us! It’s a time of growth! (*Name changed.) Jude McMaster

WAM is not only cross cultural it is also multigenerational. We are privileged to have family members from across the generations serving in YWAM England. The Sloan family are an example of this, for they joined YWAM in 1991 with their two young sons. Over the years Brian and his wife Anne have taken on a number of roles. In the early days they served with Mercy Ships (then part of YWAM). Brian was also the Regional Director of Marine Reach for a number of years. Since 2007 he became the International Co-Director of Marine Reach Ministries and in 2011 he became one of the International Elders of YWAM Ships. Brian’s son Andrew follows in his footsteps and became a YWAM staff member in 2008. Andrew is part of the leadership team at YWAM Harpenden and is currently leading a DTS with his wife Rebecca. Although Brian and Andrew’s roles are very different as both have very different giftings and callings, it is evident that both father and son are passionate about serving God.
What’s it like being in mission with your dad/son? Andy: It’s definitely a blessing having parents in missions, because there is an understanding of what you do, also it’s the best support network you could ask for. It’s interesting going to meetings with your parents! Brian: It’s a privilege. I am very proud of Andrew. However because we all have distinct areas we work in, our paths don’t cross very often. I am happy when they do. What do you like about YWAM? Brian: I appreciate community style living, for it is a great discipleship tool. Also the diversity within YWAM and the fact we have no horizons, we just try to do whatever God tells us to. Andy: I like that it’s intergenerational. I also like the emphasis on hearing God’s voice.
What would you like to see more of on the base? Andy: I would like to see an increase of focus on mercy ministries. Living in wealthy Harpenden, you can easily forget about the poor and needy. What are your dreams for the future? Andy: I was in a band for 4 years, where we toured round England and told people about Jesus. I would love to continue to do that again. Brian: To develop young leaders to get the fullness of what God has for them. I want to finish well so I would like to hand over the projects I’ve pioneered in a good state to people who will take them further than I have. Life tip Andy: Never take yourself too seriously and never stop smiling. Brian: We need to keep perspective in life and remember that the people who are in the room with us have eternal value. Our ministries and bases do not, they are just the tools. Obey God and don’t worry about the consequences. If God asks you to give something up – just do it. Emily Freestone

Devotional
My near miss got me thinking -- if my response to direction when I’m in danger is stubborn denial, what is my response to God when He gives me instruction? God reminds us in Isaiah 55:8, “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts, and my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.”
“Let go of the boat!” I could hear my kayak instructor’s voice ring out above the sound of gushing white water. It was cold, I was wet, so in a moment of panic (and stubbornness), I held on instead, trusting the boat to save me. “LET GO OF THE BOAT!” My instructor was insistent, until I finally released the kayak and swam to the river’s edge -- just as my waterlogged craft jammed itself against a rock. Guess my instructor was more capable of rescue than a soggy piece of plastic.

We might be intelligent, capable, logical -but God’s vision is far-reaching to direct us through the most troubled waters. The Psalmist knew the value of following God’s commandments: “I will never forget your commandments, for by them you give me life. (119:93) God gives us life through His commandments; it stands to reason, then, that disobeying God brings death. My near miss was a literal moment, with clear consequences, but chances are I would have only come out with a few cuts and bruises. But when life or death is on the line, will we choose God’s path that gives life? Lauren Nelson
Thank God for the many people seeking to develop their skills through the UofN. Pray that they would be able to apply their learning to reach many more people to show them God’s love. Thank God for teams like YWAM Reading and YWAM Liverpool who are seeking to show God’s compassion to the rejected in society. Pray for wisdom, discernment and creative ways to help and befriend the people they meet. Pray for the provision of places to meet and new staff. It is exciting to have many new pioneering teams throughout Europe. Thank God for them. Pray for YWAM Cáceres as they look to plant a team in Northern Spain, that they would be led by the Spirit of God and follow His direction.
Thank God for the gift of literacy. Pray for those working with YWAM Mozambique, for safety as they travel to remote places, for inspiration as they look for new ways to teach the local people and spread the Good News. Thank God for the many YWAM Associates who seek to be a bridge for YWAM teams into local communities. Pray that strong partnerships can continue to grow and strengthen so that those in need can really be aided.
