Impacting the nations A summer to celebrate

I
n August, we ran a Family Camp at YWAM Harpenden. Throughout the camp we ran a short drama series based on the Woman at the Well from John 4:1-45. The process of unpacking this story really impacted me because it says so much about God. Here we have a Samaritan woman, despised greatly by the Jews, and Jesus asks her for a drink. Jesus shouldn’t even have been in Samaria because the norm for Rabbis would have been to avoid the region altogether. He shouldn’t have talked to her, let alone asked her for a drink. This woman has had 5 husbands, so to top it all off she is a ‘sinner’ and most likely despised by her own people.
The woman’s encounter with Jesus has a missional outcome and therefore a wider Kingdom hope for the nations as well.
There are two parts to this story. The first is that a woman, terribly rejected by society and even by her own people, has her identity transformed. She is given the chance to change, be forgiven and to become new again. She is given individual Kingdom hope, no longer trapped in the patterns of her old life or mistakes. She is now known; she has value. This is the good news.
In this Advance we are celebrating another packed summer of offering Kingdom hope and transformation to people around the world. We will hear from teams in the Philippines, London, Central Europe, Amsterdam, Thailand, as well as some new YWAM teams starting out in England! It is such an exciting time as we push further into God’s dreams for His ways to be known throughout the earth.
The second part of the story, and perhaps the most important part, is that this woman goes back to her town and tells people simply about what Jesus had done for her (she passes on this good news). The end result is that many Samaritans accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour.
In vs 14 Jesus comments ‘But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’ The symbolism of the water is powerful; a wellspring of water bursting forth does not trickle, it is not gentle. As we are truly filled with this new water, it overflows to everyone around us. We want to share what we have. It cannot help but burst forth. Do you want that? I know I do.
It doesn’t matter what job you have, where you live or how old you are, Jesus is inviting you, just like he did with the woman at the well, to join in with Him!

The DTS has alternative weeks of lectures and outreach, therefore hoping to inspire the students to reach out to the local people as a lifestyle rather than structured ‘outreach’ times. The newly formed Coventry team will continue to be closely linked to The King’s Lodge returning once a week to participate in worship and fellowship there. The vision is not to be a base in Coventry, but to be a team sent out from the community at The King’s Lodge to serve our local city of Coventry. They now await the next move of God with excited anticipation...
God continued to speak to some people at The King’s Lodge about being more involved in Coventry, including Ben and Jo Foster. They felt they should pioneer a 10 month Discipleship Training School based in Coventry, which started in Sept 2013. They watched as God opened many doors ahead of them ... a local church offered a building for them to live in and use, located in central Coventry. Staff began to apply through God’s prompting. Relationships formed continued to grow, including amazing relationships between the ministers of the churches, catching up and praying together every month. This DTS is part of the vision God has for Coventry, alongside other teams coming and being involved in reaching out to the local community and continued partnership with the ministers and churches throughout the city.

W
hat is God’s heart for Coventry? God has opened multiple opportunities in the last few years for YWAM to be part of the good work going on in Coventry, central England. Last year during the Olympics, More than Gold and other partners worked together with The King’s Lodge to mobilise people to reach out in Coventry. The King’s Lodge took groups to various churches to help with sports in the park, holiday clubs and other ministries that the churches had initiated.

Chris Staplehurst who heads up the Kingdom United team has been on staff at The King’s Lodge for three years. The vision for Kingdom United began when he was working on the September 2010 Discipleship Training School. As part of the school they went to Uganda. Arriving in Kampala on New Year’s Eve, Chris watched over 200,000 Ugandans on a small television screen praising, praying and worshipping God to welcome in the New Year. Four months after, in April 2011, Chris felt God ask; “why not here in the UK?” He responded by saying; “Yes! I’ll do it!” Since that time he has been pursuing this vision to see it become reality in every town and city in the UK! He was inspired by William Carey’s interpretation of Isaiah 54:2 “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.”
KU’s DNA is to be Holy Spirit-led, creative, interactive and full of fellowship. Its framework is for the local churches take the lead role, with church leaders/youth pastors taking it in turn to lead the evening proceedings. Similarly, local church worship groups will lead out in praise and worship, while local and national ministries (such as Street Pastors) have a platform to inform participants of what the churches are doing in the local area. There are also opportunities for gifted people to shine such as youth groups with drama/ dance performances. Chris hopes that Kingdom United will act as a catalyst to bring churches together in a local area to work together as well as being a fun, inspiring and cheerful occasion where the body of Christ can come together in wholeness. In 2013 Kingdom United is to pilot events into multiple towns and cities. In 2014 (working together with HOPE 2014) the aim is to increase the number of locations further until, within the next 5 years, it reaches all parts of the UK.

New Year|Celebrations

here’s a new ministry based out of The King’s Lodge, called Kingdom United. Its purpose is to provide an annual time of celebration, prayer and unity on New Year’s Eve, with the churches of a town/city coming together to glorify our Lord and King; Jesus Christ. The inaugural event was launched in December 2012 in Nuneaton, the centre of England, drawing 150 people from 15 different churches, including 9 church leaders.

For many years, YWAM The Lighthouse has been bringing God’s love to the women in Amsterdam’s red light district. Sometimes it has been a journey of faithful persistence, yet more recently there have been several ladies that have responded to the open hand of Jesus. Every weekend the team gather to have dinner and a Bible study with any women that choose to come, before heading out, sometimes armed with homemade brownies or gifts. More consistent relationships and friendship are forming, as the ladies begin to open up and share their struggles and dreams. The team pray with them in their workplace, seeing love and light where darkness seems so present. One team member shared how a conversation about unanswered prayer led to the lady giving her life

to Jesus and she is now reading the Bible and growing in her relationship with Him, seeing Him at work in her life. This is not all that YWAM Amsterdam does. With four properties, they are able to be multifaceted in their outreach ministries. The Lighthouse and The Tabernacle are two adjacent terraced houses right in the red light district of Amsterdam. The former aims at reaching out to women involved in prostitution; the latter is a prayer centre interceding for the city as well as the nations. Near the main station, YWAM has a building with the words “Jesus loves you” in English and Dutch at the top welcoming visitors to the city, and they also have a fourth property - a training centre able to train missionaries for the nations and host the many teams that come through on a regular basis. f you have been to Amsterdam you will know it is a city of beautiful architecture and canals, yet stained with prostitution and legalised drug taking. It is in the middle of the red light district that you will find a vibrant and active YWAM community. Whilst recently visiting Amsterdam on holiday, I had the privilege of meeting some of the YWAMers there. Impressed with all the incredible work they are doing, I wanted to share with you a piece of YWAM outside of the UK.

Our team of 10 different nationalities went to provide free healthcare and the love of God to those in most need. We saw many desperate circumstances in our time in Albania but also experienced a country rich in family and warm hospitality.
In 9 weeks we ran three clinics; 2 in Dentistry and 1 in Ophthalmology, providing 1633 people with health services such as cataract operations, dental surgery, general health education and much more.
Wildfire|Kings Kids
A
n international, intergenerational Wildfire team of 14 people travelled to Tanzania to plant hundreds, maybe a thousand, trees with African young people over the Easter holidays. Local Masai are very involved in the choice of trees as well as the growing of the young saplings. Mr Jason Choi, a long term missionary in East Africa, constantly reminded our kids ‘You are not being educated for yourself, you are learning for your family, community and nation!’ Having spearheaded the planting of 750,000 trees to date, his target is 20 million!
One of our values is to leave a lasting impact; we were able to do this practically by training Albanian health professionals in new medical techniques, and being able to share mutual experiences was a blessing to all. We saw how the tree planting is part of the school education that YWAM is pioneering in Arusha, northern Tanzania. Like the trees, it will be the next generation who will benefit the most. T
he King’s Lodge has been sending MegaOutreach teams (comprised of TKL staff, trainees, and local churches) around the world since 2002. This year’s outreach saw 130 participants from 20 nations return to Cagayan de Oro in the Philippines. Different talents were spread around as the team took part in medical care, evangelism, practical projects, children’s work, preaching, drama and many other activities, all in different parts of the city. Many people were healed, and made decisions to follow Christ. On the last day there was a big celebration with a feast for 300 people. The team have been able to share the gospel, along with testimonies by locals who had encountered Jesus. Six people were baptised in the river that runs through the community. By continuously going back to the same community for six weeks, the team was able to see real transformation. ‘Praise God!’

his summer YWAM ran its first week long family camp at Highfield Oval, Harpenden, with over a hundred people attending both from YWAM and beyond. It was a great time of celebrating God at the centre of family life. “Many were challenged to think about their family identity and how they can engage with God together.”
We had a fun and engaging programme for all the families each day, with times of lively all age worship, creative prayer, fun games and thoughtful teaching. Each family member, whether big or small was valued and catered for. Both adults and children alike made new friends, as well as enjoying building relationship within their own family unit and hearing from and learning about God together. Many were challenged to think about their family identity and how they can engage with God together in a deeper way. Why not bring your family along next year!

For some, the sense of adventure and breakthrough started before even leaving the UK. Matt recalls sitting on the plane delayed at Luton, and feeling led to talk to the girl sitting next to him. Matt had the opportunity to talk about the work he’d be doing in Romania, share a personal testimony and see her back healed through prayer! As Matt records, “This was certainly one of the most memorable flights I’ve ever had!”

Camp was jam-packed with topics like hearing God’s voice, missions, how to approach new cultures and praying for the nations. Each team had totally different experiences - Romania focused on holiday club programmes for gypsy children, Poland was all about creative intercession and worship, while the Serbia team were able to help a small, fledgling YWAM team make new friendships across the town.

This year’s theme was a confrontation and battle between good and evil, a first for Bones, acted out on the streets, ending with a huge celebration filled with vibrant colours and the joy of the Lord. Through this prophetic victory of good over evil, God gave us so many victories throughout the week: healings, salvations and testimonies of many people being touched by the truth of who God is and what He has done for them. Once again, God was faithful to provide, protect and work through us to bring His light to Notting Hill.”

hat better way to end an amazing summer of outreaches than to have the whole Urban Key family all together in London for our annual 10-day Bones Camp and the Notting Hill Carnival. We were joined by others from Italy, Austria, Columbia, America and Argentina for an amazing week of worship, intercession and evangelism, all while practising for the drum-line, walking on stilts and preparing over 90 costumes and props for the two days of carnival.

ast year I caught up with British/New Zealand YWAMers, Marcus and Beth Stewart, at their home in Thailand. A year before, God had spoken to them to leave behind the familiarity of England to develop the field of “business as mission” based out of that growing but underdeveloped country. The notion that business missionaries can advance the Kingdom of God throughout the world is a new one to many, yet the skills and experience of Christian business communities have a broad and multifaceted role to play. The many expressions are united by a heart to see families, communities and nations transformed according to God’s purposes. Issues which the business world is uniquely positioned to address can include anything from poverty alleviation, to commercial ethics, to combating human trafficking and slavery, to church planting, to migration issues, and beyond. Business people have unique skills and experiences to contribute to the task of global mission. They may become partners with traditional missions, create jobs, model Biblical ethics, provide a genuine entrance to difficult countries, and encourage sustainable development practice. Marcus says “Good business as missions creates absolutely self-sustaining and locally reproducible models.”

But what does that look like in practice? An example from the world of human trafficking could be that of a woman who had been trafficked into prostitution, now following the Lord and starting a new life. In order to survive and support her children, she would need skills that result in income. “Giving that woman a job restores her dignity and gives her a living, and helps her break out of the trap that is trafficking.” Teaching skills and providing work gives hope for an independent future. “The notion that business can advance the Kingdom of God throughout the world.” Daily life in business can be a powerful way for Christians to model Godly principles in countries or industries which have become notorious for deceit, bribery, unfairness to employees, inhumane work conditions and so on. “Local Christian business people can fill a gap in nations where the only example of a Biblical Christian is the foreign missionary who is a full time evangelist. In this context, a new believer may feel he or she cannot follow Christ in their situation.
A missional business person can, like Paul the Apostle, give them ‘an example to imitate’ through their working life (2 Thess 2:9) and thus help them to see the relevance of the Gospel to all areas of life. “Local Christian business people can fill a gap in nations where the only example of a Biblical Christian is the foreign missionary who is a full time evangelist.”
So who are the Stewarts when they are at home? Beth and Marcus have 3 beautiful little girls. Their home is an open one, with a steady stream of friends, colleagues and visitors passing through. Acknowledging their calling as a family to build community wherever they are, Beth says, “Our last Discipleship Training School (DTS) students lived in our house with us, and we also host the local mums and toddlers group each week. Expats gathered in our home to share learning and resources, which naturally grew into a support network/ outreach to non-Christians in business.” Establishing themselves as a family before getting absorbed in ministry was important to the Stewarts. Family time is closely guarded, and Marcus is a fully involved Dad - bundling the older girls off to school whilst the new baby is being readied for the day. Beth says “the girls don’t know what YWAM is… it is just ‘where we live’!”
Business DTS (What’s that???) Each year the team runs a YWAM Business Discipleship Training School, helping skilled believers to answer such questions as, “How do I integrate my faith with my calling to business? What does God say about business?” alongside more common DTS topics (Hearing the voice of God, Christian character, Evangelism etc.) Many teachers will be in business themselves and will inspire with stories of how God gave them new ideas and showed them how to apply spiritual principles in the work place.

Along with their team leaders, Mark and Jo Plummer, Marcus and Beth recently hosted the Business as Mission Global Congress in Thailand. It brought together practitioners and researchers, as well as church and missions leaders, to explore all of those issues and more. More than 550 people attended this genuinely historic event!

ased in an ethnically diverse and deprived area of inner city Leeds, YWAM is passionate about justice and the arts. Dave, a member of the small urban team, shares a story that illustrates how the arts can play a vital role in missions:
ArtSpace is a project we have set up in our community where we are running regular creative workshops for teenagers. The teenagers we work with are suspended from school due to fighting, carrying weapons in school or having drugs. Other students leave school due to bullying or other complex family issues. With this eclectic group we’ve explored filmmaking, photography, fashion, printmaking, sculpture, painting and a whole load of other projects. We have sought out moments to intentionally speak life into the lives of these teenagers, affirming positive aspects of their identity and questioning their status quo. Sometimes that’s sharing the potential we see in them, or moments of modelling firm boundaries or challenging apathy. We decided to create a milestone in their school year, where they could feel a sense of achievement and pride. We put on an exhibition, installing some of their work in a small gallery in the heart of our community with a vision to see these young people celebrated, not marginalised. Let me take a moment to tell you about Jake. During his time at ArtSpace, Jake would occasionally kick off in the class, give in to the influence of his peers or just switch off entirely.

However, we’ve also seen him engage with a sharp mind and show real skill as he’s approached some of the projects. For the exhibition, we included one of his prints that he was particularly pleased with. On seeing his work in the exhibition a grin broke out across his face, he was clearly chuffed. Over the course of the next week, Jake proudly brought along family members and family friends to see his piece. As he stood back and watched them enjoy his work, it was evident that his self-esteem was rocketing. The print is now framed, pride of place in his Grandad’s house. ArtSpace illustrates our passion in Leeds to see people realise their potential and develop their strengths. It also demonstrates one of many ways that artists can use their gifts for others. During our first 12 month Arts and Justice DTS, which started in September, we are equipping artists to serve others with their gifts. In addition to the normal DTS curriculum our interns have regular training and opportunities to create, be that with film, paints, photography, fabric or through dance and music. As well as doing overseas placements across Europe, they are also encouraged to dream with God as a group and start a new project like ArtSpace that embodies God’s heart for our community.

oy is one of my heroines in the faith. She has faithfully served full time in YWAM for the past 33 years after meeting Jesus at age 51. She has finally decided the time is right to retire.
Staff Stories|Joy Barker
In Joy’s own words she describes her time in ministry as “an enormous learning curve from beginning to end, a journey full of colour and an amazing privilege.” Joy has served in many roles in her YWAM career since completing her Crossroads DTS, from working in food services in Kona, to driving across Europe to Moscow with a coach-load of eager Kings Kids. In the early years, she felt led to attend the YWAM healthcare school. When an unsolicited cheque for US$2,000 arrived in the post one day, the exact cost of the school, she knew God was leading her.

Following an outreach to the dump in Manila, Joy ‘commuted’ between the Philippines and Kona for four years, staffing further healthcare schools. The training in these early schools was intense and she recounts many testimonies of former students still on the mission field in developing nations today. Joy went on to further study within the University of the Nations, attending counselling schools, the pastoral support school and eventually obtaining her Bachelors Degree in 1990, alongside staffing and leading outreaches from the counselling schools. In 1992, she felt the Lord lead her back to Kent. She offered her abilities to YWAM London, and then Earls’ Court Project, which was set up to meet the needs of the homeless and marginalised. Joy served in many areas - school staff, cooking, counselling, accounts and pastoral care. She also joined the newly formed National Staff Care team, where she was one of the major contributors to YWAM England’s staff development ‘Portfolio’ programme. I asked Joy to sum up some of what she has learnt during her time within YWAM. She said, “Believe that the Lord speaks and speaks personally. When Jesus called his disciples he just said ‘follow me.’ Nothing else. Just do this.” Anne Sloan

Devotional Pray
I
love teaching on DTS. One part of our curriculum, and a particular favourite with me, is where we introduce trainees to a fresh relationship with the Holy Spirit.
Making the most of our relationship with Him by learning how to use our spirit (the ‘supernatural’ part of who we are) as well as our body (the ‘natural’ part) is a necessary and non-negotiable part of our daily walk. Jesus interacted with the physical and spiritual in just about every story we read about Him. More than that He tells us that we can do the same! In fact, He tells us that the Holy Spirit will be instrumental in this whether we are telling people about Jesus (Ac 1:8), in need of teaching (Jo 14:26) or even when we may need some comfort (Jo 16:7). The list goes on… Becoming ‘naturally supernatural’, being comfortable in serving God’s purposes in

both realms, just as Jesus did, is a challenging but exciting part of our journey. Prophetic encouragements, words of knowledge or wisdom, even miracles – will become part of the story of those who embrace this duality of existence into their lives. Consider the following. Have we minimised the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives? Perhaps we have neglected our spiritual development through relationship with Holy Spirit in favour of reading about Him in books or relying on the testimony of others. If so, let us ask His forgiveness and welcome Him afresh! One of the last things Jesus did was to ‘breathe’ on his disciples so that they could receive the Holy Spirit (Jo 20:22). Let’s ask Jesus to do the same for us today – and who knows in what naturally supernatural way we will serve Him tomorrow.

For believing business men and women on every continent to know that they can use their skills in a powerful way for the Kingdom of God. For wisdom, creativity and action for the various small YWAM teams throughout England, including Coventry and Leeds. For the right relationships and opportunities to be formed to see God’s kingdom grow in these cities.
For hope and a way out for many who see prostitution as the only way to provide for their families, particularly in Amsterdam. For those who are working with these women to offer them another way to live. For our nation, particularly at New Year, to be a nation where Jesus is known and celebrated. For the church nationally to continue to bring Jesus to the forefront in their communities.
