CONCEPT A FARMER'S MARKET (also farmers market) is a physical retail market featuring foods sold directly by farmers to consumers. Farmers' markets typically consist of booths, tables or stands, outdoors or indoors, where farmers sell fruits, vegetables, meats, and sometimes prepared foods and beverages. They are distinguished from public markets, which are generally housed in permanent structures, open year-round, and offer a variety of non-farmer/producer vendors, packaged foods and non-food products. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmers'_market>

Onodaga Creek is treated as the seperate lines of Syracuse downtown and rural area. People from two areas enjoy different life styles. Two parts are in comparison. Similarly, the site is divided into two parts by Onondaga Creek. Each part can represent one of the urban and rural areas, and juxtapose to the other. 2

The basic scheme of the project is a tower with a giant open on the top. The footprint of building butts up against Canal street and Varick Street with the major Filtration system existent her because of the prevailing winds. Open plaza or garden space is placed facing the research facility and near the basketball court near 6th Ave. The placement is created to mimic the park near canal and to increase greenery within New York City.
REMEDIATION/OPERATIONS TOWER
Through the use of digital, simulation and analog technology, this project address the issue of air quality in NYC while simultaneously exploring the resurgence of public infrastructural architecture to reduce energy consumption, re-mediate environmental degradation and harvest and distribute energy.

CONCEPT The concept begins with idea of "city within the city" from Oswald Mathias Ungers, the design tries to bring the urban sequances of the city into the project, by creating two courtyards.

The site is located at the historical district of Downtown Syracuse. Fayette Park, also called Firefighter's Memorial Park, locates on the northern side of the site. Around the site, there are other existing modern and historical buildings.

THESIS STATEMENT
EDUCATION EVOLUTION IN CHINA
The biggest problem of the state-controlled children’s education in the People’s Republic of China is that the system focuses more on the method of education rather than learning of children themselves. Thus the children are lack of internal motivation to learn. Moreover, the typical education in China tend to isolate the students from the neighborhood, lacking a chance for students to really interact and experiment hands on with new knowledge. However, this problem aspect can be overcame by learning from the western pedagogical strategies, such as the Montessori Education. For this educational approach, the primary goal is to stimulate children’s internal motivation to learn. Children have more freedom to make decisions. What are they going to learn? Where? When? And How?
ANCIENT EDUCATION
A school building designed to specialize these pedagogical strategies could rely on architectural tactics which produce the following effects. The school itself becomes a part of the urban infrastructure to connect the school community with the neighborhood, which allows children to have more interaction with its surroundings and the society. Also, within the school, minor learning space is added to create a framework within which children can use to develop their own meaning of learning. At the same time, informal learning spaces are created to extend and enhance children’s learning experiences outside the classroom boxes. In this way, I contend that the school as a learning institution and the architecture that gives it spatial form and urban presence both act as a critique of current practice.

Haidian District is one area full of different educational institutions including the world-known universities such as Peking University, and Tsing-hua University. There are other colleges such as the China Technology School of Astronomy, the Technology Institute of Engineer, the Beijing Film Academy and so on. The convergence of different college campuses provide Haidian District a healthy precedent condition for positive learning atmosphere.

PATH WAY Based on the program and major traffic analysis, the big road next to the site is an important seperation between the academic and the living. Two sides need connections. There are three existing connections.
My proposed site will be situated between Tsing-hua University and Peking University. (As indicated in the next page.) Both Universities have their own School of Education. My proposed school can become part of the universities, used as an experimental learning environment. Moreover, there are several existing elementary schools, which can be used as comparisons to my proposed design.
