Searching for images and information, creating a mood/inspiration board, playing with typefaces — these were important first steps within the ideation process. Learning how to create patterns while a few original illustrations began to take shape. I also experimented with colors, type, and various tools in Illustrator. Many hours were spent in Photoshop getting more familiar with layers, photo manipulation and special effects while striving for desired results. Several weeks were spent within the process of going from company development to product conception to brand ideas to labels and paper wraps to final package production.

To the people interested

To the people who ask if

To the people who ask

To the people who message

in small animals and reptiles. When I ask you the name of a veterinarian you will use, and you tell me that only dogs and cats need a vet... WAKE UP. Exotics get sick TOO.

they can adopt puppies and kittens in pairs, so they can breed them when they get older....

if I know any phone numbers to breeders and if I could get them a nice discount. Hello?

You are not adopting my pet(s).

You are not adopting my pet.

me with no information about themselves, or their experience with animals. You are only interested in how to get to my house, how big the animal is, and whether or not it’s free.

To the people who aren’t

To the people who tell

going to be home, but ask me if I can drop the animal off at your neighbor’s house.

me that I’m selfish for charging a small adoption fee... SELFISH? If I were truly selfish, I would not be doing this in the first place, now would I?

You are not adopting my pet. To the people who live in Connecticut, Mass, etc, who message me and ask how far I am willing to drive... Well, I am not.

By Constance Grolling

I rescue, foster and have placed many, many adoption ads through craigslist throughout the years. My inbox is flooded with many messages all of the time. 14

march 2009

nce in a while I receive a purebred cat, or very desirable breed of dog, or expensive species of snake that needs to be put up for adoption. These obviously get the MOST replies. Most replies consist of “I want it, e-mail me with pics.” Um, no. But thanks for playing. You...are not adopting my pet. Some e-mails contain “I’m interested in the animal for adoption. Please call me back today after 9, or tomorrow between 10 and 11, or again after 3.” No, I’m not taking these orders from someone I don’t know. If you REALLY want to adopt the said animal, then YOU will contact me when it’s convenient for ME. Otherwise...... You, are not adopting my pet. Alot of the e-mails consist of “Hello, we’re 3 college girls sharing an apartment, and we want to adopt your kitty! We can offer lots of love!” That’s very sweet of you girls, really, but what will you do when you graduate college and move on with your life? Where will the kitty end up? You are not adopting my pet. Often times people surrender their animals to me because the animals are sick or injured, and the people don’t have the time or the desire to care for them. Once I make sure the animals are doing well, I will put them up for adoption. The SAME people who GAVE me their animal want to adopt them back. Are you kidding? No. Just, no. YOU are not adopting my pet.

You are not adopting my pet.

You are not adopting my pet.

You are not adopting my pet. To the people who want to adopt an animal for a birthday or a Christmas present... That’s sweet of you. While your intentions are good, absolutely NOT. When the recipient of this animal decides that they don’t want it, what will you do then?

You are not adopting my pet.

You are not adopting my pet. To the 14 year olds who

personal | what the heck Here, my faceless friends, are some of the reasons why I do not have a girlfriend. I’m not one to complain, and this indeed is not a complaint at all. I usually enjoy the spoils of the single life. This is simply a list that, for some reason, I am sharing out of boredom. OK, I’m not like midget short. Just short. Like 5’6”... roughly the same height as my grandmother, which is rather humbling to know. Sure, there’s apparently like 3 women in America who like short guys, but c’mon, everyone knows they are probably kinda weird. Or they weren’t hugged enough as a child. Or they have some odd fetish, or a third arm or something. (muahahaha now I’ll get emails from all sorts of women claiming they like short guys...my plan is working splendidly.)

want cute cuddly kittens or bunnies. Does your mother know you’re scanning the adoption forum? Do you have a job to care for these animals?

Much like George Washington, I cannot tell a lie. So, like George and his cherry tree, I must confess that I don’t do laundry very often. It’s not that I walk around in dirty clothes, because I don’t. I dress very well and actually get complimented on it from time to time. It’s just that I have the philosophy that most things aren’t dirty after wearing them only one time. Is that normal? Or is that just me? I don’t know. Today I learned I have negative money in my checking account. That’s always awesome to hear. Thankfully, I keep more than one account and able to correct things quickly (since I’m so responsible), but still, it was scary. You know what else this means though, right? I like to do things and go out to places that don’t cost a lot. So, I’m sorry, but there will not be any $100 bottles of wine or fine dinners consisting of steamed orchids and roasted virgin lamb or something expensive like that. I mean, I’ll spring for more than McDonalds... I do have SOME pride, but seriously...Do I look like I am made out of money? Well, I’ll answer for you (since you can’t see me). No, no I do not look like I am made out of money...yet.

You are not adopting my pet. To the people who inquire about the iguanas but who openly admit that they have no knowledge of how big they actually get.

You are not adopting my pet. And, of course, sadly only a few e-mails ever consist of, “Hello, we are a loving family of four living in a nice house with a fenced in yard. We have lots of experience with animals and are looking for one more to add to our fun, little family.”

YES... YOU are adopting my pet. craigslist living

Um, let’s be honest... how many sexy European women out there would go for someone like me? Or even hot women in general? Actually, I prefer beautiful or cute to hot. But those women always seem to be taken. yes, it’s true. Or so I am told. Cute cute cute. Unfortunately however, I am not like Orlando Bloom meets Brad Pitt meets Jake Gyllenhall cute. Nope... instead, I am cute like your baby nephew. It hasn’t actually happened yet, but I’m convinced that people are just dying to pinch my cheeks and mess up my hair when they see me. It’s only a matter of time. So yes, I’m cute, but not in the actually attractive kind of way. Which sucks.

Reasons Why I DO NOT Have a Girlfriend

By Sven Shortquist PostItArt by Brian Miller

Every single girl I know says that a guy who can cook is sexy. Well, to be blunt, I cannot cook. At all. I rely heavily on my microwave, pizza delivery, and carry-out places exclusively. The last three times I have tried to use the oven, things have caught fire. Seriously. And I have never used my stove. Ever. Also, I cannot dance well. I know that has nothing to do with cooking, but both are sexy qualities I do not possess. I enjoy many types of things to read, too. Most people would consider being well-read a good thing. I usually do. However, it seems that my success rate with meeting women who also like to read, but who aren’t also shockingly unattractive in one way or another is rather slim. I find that most people who read profusely are either socially inept or weird and boring or ugly. Yes, I realize that statement applies to myself too, so there’s no need to point it out to me. I’m in my 20s. I still do not have to shave everyday, and I couldn’t grow a beard if I was paid to. Now, some women may consider this cute. Thank you. But how cute will it be when you wake up next to me in the morning, and for just a *split second* you think you are waking up next to your little brother? Trust me, it’s traumatic and creepy for both you and for me. Sadly though, I’m hilarious in a weird way. Not in the I-keep-pictures-of-barnyardanimals-inside-my-closet-withhearts-drawn-around-them kind of weird, but in a sometimes-people-don’t-know-how-to-respondto-me kind of way. Which is very fun for me because I enjoy awkwardness. Enough said. But hey, YOURE the one reading it :) HA! Take THAT! So, there you have it. I don’t mean to offend anyone or to start a debate. Obviously, this was done tongue-in-cheek. I just wanted to write a list. There are plenty of positive things about me too, but the thought of writing this list occurred to me today while taking a shower — everyone knows that our best ideas come while in the shower. So I just HAD to write...Good night :)

Let’s get to where we are going more efficiently, safely...and in fewer cars The AmericAn idle STory

Fume And noiSe reducTionS needed

Americans use more than 2 billion gallons of fuel each year while idling. An idling car creates twice the emissions of a car in motion. One additional hour of idling per vehicle per day results in 64,000 miles in engine wear and tear annually along with 500 gallons of wasted fuel. Fast food and coffee drive-thrus are notorious for idlers, in addition to school parking lots, truck stops and teller bank windows. Turning your car off if you’re gonna stay put for more than 10 seconds is a huge fuel saver. In cold weather, driving actually warms up your car much faster than idling. The typical American puts in 1,600 hours to get 7,500 miles: less than five miles an hour. Imagine the emissions output!

At the 2004 Carfree Day in Montreal, Canada, measurements taken by the city showed a 90% reduction in the level of nitrogen monoxide (NO) and a 100% reduction in carbon monoxide (CO) within the area closed to cars that day as compared to readings taken the same day at an intersection where motor vehicle traffic was normal. Also, a 38% drop in the ambient noise level was recorded.

The large quantity of petroleum used and emissions created from idling trucks is huge. In 2000, Argonne National Laboratory [Argonne] estimated that over 800 million gallons of diesel were used annually just for the overnight idling of sleeper cabs.

roAd deAThS And AccidenTS criTicAl •

More than 1.17 million people die on the roads every year — 10 million are estimated to be injured.

Forecasts indicate that by 2030 this will have risen to 2 million deaths a year, and 50 million injuries.

The cumulative death total in the period 1995-2030 is estimated to be 50 million.

In the U.S., the American Lung Association estimate

that between 10,000 and 24,000 people die each year as a result of traffic related air pollution. •

The work of epidemiologists and public health specialists in the U.S. and U.K. indicate that up to 60,000 Americans and 10,000 British are killed each year as a result of particulate pollution.

Globally, accidents produce about 800,000 permanently handicapped people per year.

This year analysts expect 2.4 million cars to be sold in China, and 5 million vehicles altogether Ford and GM expect that China will surpass the US (where 17 million vehicles are sold per year) as the largest car market in the world by 2025 Source: The Ecologist, Volume 35, No. 2, page 63. 2005

It begins in Hillsboro, passes through Beaverton and downtown, across the Willamette River through NE Portland and east to the city of Gresham. The red Line incorporates a five mile (8 km) north-south addition between the airport and Gateway Transit Center near the northeast Portland neighborhood of Parkrose. Then the line overlaps with the Blue Line, continuing west through downtown, and terminating at the Beaverton transit center.
