The expressive T, B minor-key melody is stated in unison; the composer adds a four-voice texture in the subsequent verse. Then the “Veni, Emmanuel”/“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” chant melody is skillfully incorporated in the men’s lower voice as the women sing the original melody in unison above. The piece starts with an imitative Part 1 Part 2 gloria in excelsis loosely based on the Hodie melody, then launches into the Hodie text. A modulation leads to a middle section with a more faithful (but still metrical) unison statement of the chant, which then returns to the original Gloria/Hodie in a higher key, leading to a joyous conclusion.
