Senior Rugby League Division 1 WIT 15 CIT 15

There was a share of the spoils in the battle of the Munster’s Institutes, Waterford and Cork played out an exciting draw in Carriganore on Wednesday afternoon last, in lashing wind and rain. CIT began the game and forced errors from WIT and the mistakes from WIT led to penalties that yielded nine points for the Cork side. As the half wore on WIT’s pack drove forward as a unit and their work resulted in a fine try touched down by Sean Hogan and was dually converted by Kieran Hyland to leave the Deise boys training 9-7. Both sides added one penalty each before the change over as CIT held a 12-10 lead. CIT controlled things again on the restart but only yielded 3 points and Shane McGuire was the man to pounce on an opportunity to touch down WIT’s second try of the game to tie up the scores at 15-15.

Skydive WIT Jump Day Finally, Blue skies, low wind and first time jumpers! Skydive WIT members Tanya Dyachenko, Alan O’Regan & Eoghan O’Donnell completed their first successful solo skydive last Friday & Saturday with Skydive Ireland in Birr Airfield. We brought our first timers up to 3,500ft, shouted “DOOR!!” - “EXIT EXIT!” and from that point on it was up to the students to fly themselves safely back to the ground. Also jumping on the day was Cathal Deehy-Power and Roy Byrne. Cathal has progressed onto DRC, the next stage in his training and Roy is now jumping a 190ft² canopy with 72 jumps now under his belt and moving closer to his B Licence. Our next jump day will be coming up soon, keep an eye on the Skydive WIT Facebook page for updates.

Match Reports

CFAI Premier League South. WIT 5 CIT 1. WIT’s Premier soccer team continue top of the league after a convincing win against CIT. This was a fast competitive game with both teams playing skillful football. WIT opened strongly and scored within 10 minutes through Craig McGuire who has scored for the third game in a row for the college. CIT fought back throughout the 1st half and levelled up the scores just on the half-time whistle. A close fought second half seemed to be on the cards but with two quick goals from Daragh Walshe and John Frost got WIT off to a dream second half start. WIT’s confidence grew and midway through the half Walshe scored from the penalty spot for WIT to make it 4-1. McGuire then scored his second in the last ten minutes for WIT to run out 5-1 winners. What a season so far for this team who are now through to the knock out stages after Christmas, this is the first time the team have been to this stage since the ‘04/05 season and hopefully these winning ways will continue. WIT Team: K.Burns,C,McCabe, J.Frost, D.Mernagh, A.J.Lehane, C.O Driscoll, S.Johnson, I.Crowley,C.McGuire, D.Walshe,J.Walsh. Reserves. A.Heaslip, L.Arnicar, N.Schouten, P.Huismannn, D.Grace.

Women’s Soccer Division 1

WIT 0 CIT 1 WIT ladies soccer team went down to CIT after a very entertaining game in WIT sports campus on Thursday afternoon last, where a combination of bad luck and some great goal keeping from CIT keeper Georgina McKeon denied WIT at least a share of the spoils. The main talking point in the opening half was the good saves from both keepers and the decision of the referee not to award a goal after Maria Delahunty’s effort seemed to be behind the line That goal did not stand and the sucker punch arrived on the 60th minute as CIT eventually broke down the WIT defence with a fine effort. Aoife Condon made some fine saves for WIT but WIT found CIT’s goal keeper in inspired form and she was not to be beaten over the ninety minutes as the Leesider’s took maximum points WIT Aoife Condon, Edel Maher, Kelly-Anne Farrell, Aoife Tormey, Sarah Ryan, Sinead Corcoran, Sheena Carroll, Grace Phelan, Leanne O Reilly, Maria Delahunty, Katie Duggan, Reserves, Anne-Marie Noonan, Louise Gibbons, Nicola Kirwan, Ruth Jones, Keely Clayden, Clara Donnelly..

Law Society

Congratulations to Sarah, Sean and Joy for representing WIT at the recent Moot Court competition held in the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin. A big thank you must go to Deirdre Adams for her support, kindness and good-will as well as to Neil Van Dokkum for his ability to type at the speed of light. Sixteen teams took part in the annual competition this year and even though the team did not get through to the semi-finals they did themselves and the college proud. The awesome task of presenting submissions before the court was heralded as a nightmare but turned out to be the thrill of a lifetime. The team were well prepared and delivered their submissions with great aplomb. This wonderful experience will be remembered for a long time to come by all concerned. WIT Law Society will be holding a Mock trial in early January and recommend that all it’s members try out for it as it would be brilliant to have on your CV. Please keep an eye out for all of

The Law Society events coming up!

WIT Charity Sleepover Raises €1,000

On Tuesday the 8th of November myself and 20 students took part in a Charity Sleepover in the WIT Sports hall. We stayed there from 9pm until 9am. Some of us slept, some didn’t. We had a DVD area, xbox area, table tennis ad board games. Thank you to the Dome Bar for giving us tea, coffees and some goodies. Thank you to all the students who took part, raised the money, and slept on campus for the night. This was the first time students slept on campus and hopefully next year will see the second WIT Charity Sleepover. Together we raised €1000 for St Vincent De Paul’s Homeless Shelter here in Waterford City. Denise McCarthy, WIT STUDENTS’ UNION - Welfare Officer

There are five school convenors in WIT to represent the class reps of each school faculty at the Institute. Each Convenor was elected to the position at the first class rep council this year. Their functions include liaising with all class reps from their respective schools on course and class issues. This is done in tangent with the WIT Students’ Union Sabbaticial Officers. Your Class Rep should liaise with their respective school convenor to tackle such issues. Another function of the school convenors is that they form a vital part of the WIT Students’ Union executive. This body oversees the governance and structures of the Students’ Union.

GAA WIT Fresher Football

WIT 3-12 UCC 3-9 WIT fresher’s football side rounded off their league campaign with a three point win down on the Farm in UCC. WIT got off to a fantastic start and went 2-1 to 1-0 in front early in play; however it was UCC who took control by the break to lead by one point (UCC 2-5 WIT 2-4). In a very good game with both sides battling for qualification, some of the exchanges became very tough but when the chips were down it was WIT inspired by good shows from Cian

New’s

Gilligan, Shane Walsh, Martin O’Brien, James O’Mahony and Liam McGrath who dug deepest to come away with the win. Unfortunately it was not enough, as the boys lost out on progression to the next round on score difference. WIT Niall Carolan, Shane Walsh, Cian Gilligan, Ben Dunford, Martin O’Brien, Pauric O’Leary (captain), Tom Eustace, Eoghan Quinlan (0-2), Ciaran Hearn, Mark O’Connor (0-1), Ciaran Byrne, James O’Mahoney (0-3), Sean Pailing (1-0) , Liam McGrath (2-5), John Horan sub Tadgh Darcy (0-1) for Horan.

WIT Men’s Senior Hurling IT Carlow 2-12 WIT 1-10 WIT senior hurling side went down to IT Carlow by five points in their south east derby game away last Monday afternoon. In an evenly contested first half the sides went in level at seven points apiece with first half scores for WIT coming from Mark Molloy (2), Eoin Murphy (2), Bernard Burke, Willie Dunphy and Joe O’Dwyer with one point each. Ex WIT player TJ Reid proved a thorn in the side of his former team in the second half as IT Carlow upped the tempo on the resumption and the Barrowsiders outscored WIT by 2-5 to 1-3 in the second half. WIT scores in the second half came through

Eoin Madigan (2 points), and Adrian Power hitting (1-1) with the goal coming from a penalty. The best performers in the blue jersey on Monday were Adrian Power who gave a man of the match display in goal, while Enda Barrett, Mark Molloy, Stephen O’Keefe and Eoin Murphy were others to shine for WIT. WIT Adrian Power (1-1), Maurice Power, Kieran Joyce, Ciaran Hough, Stephen O’Keefe, Enda Barrett, Luke Harney, James Dowling, Mark Molloy, Joe O’Dwyer, Bernard Burke, Eoin Murphy, Martin Power, Eoin Madigan, Willie Dunphy subs Sean Cleary for Dunphy, Mattie O’Donnell for Burke.

WIT Ladies Football Division 4 quarter final. WIT 3-5 NUIG 1-9 WIT second string ladies football team qualified for the semi final of Division 4 with a gutsy performance in torrential rain in Clonrad GAA club, Co.Laois against NUI Galway. A fine start that saw Aisling Murphy fire to the net ,with Kellie Kearny also raising a white flag early in play for WIT. In a very entertaining half both sides gave it everything and although NUIG did score 1-4 in the opening half, they were forced to kick wide after wide by a resolute WIT defence. The forward unit inspired by their defenders did some serious damage before the interval with captain fantastic Rosie Keogh drilling to the net and points from Aisling Murphy and Aoife Dillane gave WIT a 2-4 to 1-4 half

Fresher Hurling Division 1

Semi final UCC 0-12 WIT 0-7 On a miserable night of heavy rain, UCC reigned spreme in Carriganore in the Fresher hurling division one semi final against WIT, as the rebel men turned a two point half time deficit into a five point win. WIT played some beautiful hurling in the first half and led at the interval by 0-6 to 0-4 with Rhys Clarke raising the white flag on five occasion and Stephen Maher also found the range from wing forward; however WIT were guilty of hitting eight wides which proved very costly. On the resumption after half time the heavens opened and rain teamed down making conditions very hard for good hurling .WIT could only muster one point in the second with Rhys Clarke again on the mark .UCC the kings of fresher’s hurling in

time lead. The second half saw both sides battle bravely in the conditions, time after time the WIT defence blocked and won possession in the tackle and once again when the NUIG storm had been dealt with it was an Aisling Murphy goal that drove WIT home to victory with her Wexford colleague Kellie Kearny curling over another fine point too. WIT Sarah Healy, Orla Boggan, Claire Hutchings, Amy Ryan, Sarah Fitzgerald, Danielle Downey, Louise Dickenson, Kellie Kearny (0-2), Niamh Arthur, Aisling Murphy (2-2), Pamela Martin, Aoife Dillane (01), Ciara Dunican, Rosie Keogh (1-0), Triona O’Donnell.
